Search

When developing machine learning models, image quality assessment (IQA) measures are a crucial component for evaluation. However, commonly used IQA measures have been primarily developed and optimized for natural images. In many specialized settings, such as medical images, this poses an often-overlooked problem regarding suitability. In previous studies, the IQA measure HaarPSI showed promising behavior for natural and medical images. HaarPSI is based on Haar wavelet representations and the framework allows optimization of two parameters. So far, these parameters have been aligned for natural images. Here, we optimize these parameters for two annotated medical data sets, a photoacoustic and a chest X-Ray data set. We observe that they are more sensitive to the parameter choices than the employed natural images, and on the other hand both medical data sets lead to similar parameter values when optimized. We denote the optimized setting, which improves the performance for the medical images notably, by HaarPSI$_{MED}$. The results suggest that adapting common IQA measures within their frameworks for medical images can provide a valuable, generalizable addition to the employment of more specific task-based measures., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

We study a flaring activity of the HSP Mrk421 that was characterized from radio to very-high-energy (VHE; E $>0.1$TeV) gamma rays with MAGIC, Fermi-LAT, Swift, XMM-Newton and several optical and radio telescopes. These observations included, for the first time for a gamma-ray flare of a blazar, simultaneous X-ray polarization measurements with IXPE. We find substantial variability in both X-rays and VHE gamma rays throughout the campaign, with the highest VHE flux above 0.2 TeV occurring during the IXPE observing window, and exceeding twice the flux of the Crab Nebula. However, the VHE and X-ray spectra are on average softer, and the correlation between these two bands weaker that those reported in previous flares of Mrk421. IXPE reveals an X-ray polarization degree significantly higher than that at radio and optical frequencies. The X-ray polarization angle varies by $\sim$100$^\circ$ on timescales of days, and the polarization degree changes by more than a factor 4. The highest X-ray polarization degree reaches 26%, around which a X-ray counter-clockwise hysteresis loop is measured with XMM-Newton. It suggests that the X-ray emission comes from particles close to the high-energy cutoff, hence possibly probing an extreme case of the Turbulent Extreme Multi-Zone model. We model the broadband emission with a simplified stratified jet model throughout the flare. The polarization measurements imply an electron distribution in the X-ray emitting region with a very high minimum Lorentz factor, which is expected in electron-ion plasma, as well as a variation of the emitting region size up to a factor of three during the flaring activity. We find no correlation between the fluxes and the evolution of the model parameters, which indicates a stochastic nature of the underlying physical mechanism. X-ray polarization is a unique new probe of the particle acceleration in astrophysical jets made possible through the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. Here we report on the first dense X-ray polarization monitoring campaign on the blazar Mrk 421. Our observations were accompanied by an even denser radio and optical polarization campaign. We find significant short-timescale variability in both X-ray polarization degree and angle, including a $\sim90^\circ$ angle rotation about the jet axis. We attribute this to random variations of the magnetic field, consistent with the presence of turbulence but also unlikely to be explained by turbulence alone. At the same time, the degree of lower-energy polarization is significantly lower and shows no more than mild variability. Our campaign provides further evidence for a scenario in which energy-stratified shock-acceleration of relativistic electrons, combined with a turbulent magnetic field, is responsible for optical to X-ray synchrotron emission in blazar jets., Comment: 23 pages, including 8 pages of appendices. 12 figures, 3 tables. We present multi-epoch optical spectropolarimetric and imaging polarimetric observations of the nearby Type II supernova (SN) 2023ixf discovered in M101 at a distance of 6.85 Mpc. The first imaging polarimetric observations were taken +2.33 days (60085.08 MJD) after the explosion, while the last imaging polarimetric data points (+73.19 and +76.19 days) were acquired after the fall from the light curve plateau. At +2.33 days there is strong evidence of circumstellar material (CSM) interaction in the spectra and the light curve. A significant level of polarization $P_r = 0.88\pm 0.06 \% $ seen during this phase indicates that this CSM is aspherical. We find that the polarization evolves with time toward the interstellar polarization level ($0.35\%$) during the photospheric phase, which suggests that the recombination photosphere is spherically symmetric. There is a jump in polarization ($P_r =0.65 \pm 0.08 \% $) at +73.19 days when the light curve falls from the plateau. This is a phase where polarimetric data is sensitive to non-spherical inner ejecta or a decrease in optical depth into the single scattering regime. We also present spectropolarimetric data that reveal line (de)polarization during most of the observed epochs. In addition, at +14.50 days we see an "inverse P Cygn" profile in the H and He line polarization, which clearly indicates the presence of asymmetrically distributed material overlying the photosphere. The overall temporal evolution of polarization is typical for Type II SNe, but the high level of polarization during the rising phase has only been observed in SN 2023ixf., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJL, comments welcome

Optical pumping of barium monofluoride (BaF) within a cryogenic neon matrix is demonstrated. Interestingly, with an applied magnetic field of 2~G, optical pumping is found to be considerably more efficient for a laser beam with right-circular polarization compared to left-circular polarization. Calculations show that the higher efficiency is due to a constructive versus destructive interference and is dependent on the orientation of the BaF molecule relative to the magnetic field direction. The effect leads to orientation-dependent optical pumping within the matrix. As optical pumping is the first step used in our planned electron electric-dipole moment (eEDM) measurement, we intend to exploit this property to obtain the selection of molecular orientations that is required for an eEDM measurement., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

A method for specular reflection of polar molecules is proposed. Electrostatatic potentials and forces are calculated for a low-field-seeking molecule near a series of long cylindrical electrodes of radius $r$ with dc potentials of $+V$ and $-V$ applied to alternate electrodes. A center-to-center separation of $2.9\,r$ leads to remarkably flat equipotential surfaces and thus to a nearly planar mirror for specular reflection of the polar molecules, with the angle of reflection equalling the angle of incidence to an accuracy approaching a microradian. This mirror can be used to redirect cryogenic molecular beams. Separating barium monofluoride (BaF) molecules created in a helium-buffer-gas laser-ablation source from other ablation products is a necessary step to producing a pure sample of matrix-isolated BaF, as is required by the EDM$^3$ collaboration for implementing a precise measurement of the electron electric dipole moment. A cryogenic neon solid doped with barium monofluoride (BaF) is created on a cryogenic substrate using a stream of Ne gas and a high-intensity beam of BaF molecules produced in a cryogenic helium-buffer-gas laser-ablation source. The apparatus is designed for eventual use in a measurement of the electron electric dipole moment (eEDM). Laser-induced fluorescence is observed from transitions up to the $B\,^2\Sigma_{1/2}$ state. The number of BaF molecules found to be present in the solid and addressable with this laser transition is approximately 10$^{10}$ per mm$^3$, which is of the same order as the total number of BaF molecules that impact the substrate during the hour of growth time for the solid. As a result, an eventual eEDM measurement could have continual access to an accumulation of an hour's worth of molecules (all of which are contained within a 1-mm$^3$ volume and are thermalized into the ground state), compared to beam experiments which study the molecules from a single ablation during the millisecond-timescale of their passage through a much larger-scale measurement apparatus. We present simultaneous high-precision optical polarimetric and near-infrared (NIR) to ultraviolet (UV) photometric observations of low-mass black hole X-ray binary A0620$\unicode{x2013}$00 in the quiescent state. Subtracting interstellar polarization, estimated from a sample of field stars, we derive the intrinsic polarization of A0620$\unicode{x2013}$00. We show that the intrinsic polarization degree (PD) is variable with the orbital period with the amplitude of $\sim0.3\%$ at least in the $R$ band, where the signal-to-noise ratio of our observations is the best. It implies that some fraction of the optical polarization is produced by scattering of stellar radiation off the matter that follows the black hole in its orbital motion. In addition, we see a rotation of the orbit-average intrinsic polarization angle (PA) with the wavelength from $164\deg$ in the $R$ to $180\deg$ in the $B$ band. All of the above, combined with the historical NIR to optical polarimetric observations, shows the complex behavior of average intrinsic polarization of A0620$\unicode{x2013}$00 with the PA making continuous rotation from infrared to blue band by $\sim56\deg$ in total, while the PD $\sim1\%$ remains nearly constant over the entire spectral range. The spectral dependence of the PA can be described by Faraday rotation with the rotation measure of RM=$-0.2$ rad $\mu$m$^{-2}$, implying a few Gauss magnetic field in the plasma surrounding the black hole accretion disk. However, our preferred interpretation for the peculiar wavelength dependence is the interplay between two polarized components with different PAs. The kinematics of isolated dwarf galaxies in the Local Sheet have been studied to ascertain how the Council of Giants has affected flows. Peculiar velocities parallel to the Sheet in the frame of reference of the Council ascend steeply from negative to positive values on the near side of the Council at a heliocentric radius of $2.4 \pm 0.2$ Mpc. They descend to preponderantly negative values at a radius of $3.9^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$ Mpc, which is near the middle of the Council realm. Such behaviour is evidence for a flow field set up by the combined gravitational effects of the Local Group and Council, the ascending node being where their gravitational forces balance. Receding dwarfs on the near side of the Council are predominantly located in the direction of M94, although this may be a manifestation of the limitations of sampling. If M94 were entirely responsible for the placement of the ascending node, then the galaxy's total mass relative to the Local Group would have to be $0.8^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$, the same as indicated by the orbits of satellite galaxies. Rather, if the placement of the ascending node were set by matter distributed evenly in azimuth at the Council's radius, then the required total mass relative to the Local Group would have to be $4^{+3}_{-2}$, which is 30% to 40% lower than implied by satellite motions but still consistent within errors. Variability can be the pathway to understanding the physical processes in astrophysical jets, however, the high-cadence observations required to test particle acceleration models are still missing. Here we report on the first attempt to produce continuous, >24 hour polarization light curves of blazars using telescopes distributed across the globe and the rotation of the Earth to avoid the rising Sun. Our campaign involved 16 telescopes in Asia, Europe, and North America. We observed BL Lacertae and CGRaBS J0211+1051 for a combined 685 telescope hours. We find large variations in the polarization degree and angle for both sources in sub-hour timescales as well as a ~180 degree rotation of the polarization angle in CGRaBS J0211+1051 in less than two days. We compared our high-cadence observations to Particle-In-Cell magnetic reconnection and turbulent plasma simulations. We find that although the state of the art simulation frameworks can produce a large fraction of the polarization properties, they do not account for the entirety of the observed polarization behavior in blazar jets., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A. Artificial intelligence methods are being increasingly applied across various domains, but their often opaque nature has raised concerns about accountability and trust. In response, the field of explainable AI (XAI) has emerged to address the need for human-understandable AI systems. Evolutionary computation (EC), a family of powerful optimization and learning algorithms, offers significant potential to contribute to XAI, and vice versa. This paper provides an introduction to XAI and reviews current techniques for explaining machine learning models. We then explore how EC can be leveraged in XAI and examine existing XAI approaches that incorporate EC techniques. Furthermore, we discuss the application of XAI principles within EC itself, investigating how these principles can illuminate the behavior and outcomes of EC algorithms, their (automatic) configuration, and the underlying problem landscapes they optimize. Finally, we discuss open challenges in XAI and highlight opportunities for future research at the intersection of XAI and EC. We report the X-ray polarization properties of the high-synchrotron-peaked (HSP) blazar PKS 2155$-$304 based on observations with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). We observed the source between Oct 27 and Nov 7, 2023. We also conducted an extensive contemporaneous multiwavelength (MW) campaign. We find that during the first half ($T_1$) of the IXPE pointing, the source exhibited the highest X-ray polarization degree detected for an HSP blazar thus far, (30.7$\pm$2.0)%, which dropped to (15.3$\pm$2.1)% during the second half ($T_2$). The X-ray polarization angle remained stable during the IXPE pointing at 129.4$^\circ$$\pm$1.8$^\circ$ and 125.4$^\circ$$\pm$3.9$^\circ$ during $T_1$ and $T_2$, respectively. Meanwhile, the optical polarization degree remained stable during the IXPE pointing, with average host-galaxy-corrected values of (4.3$\pm$0.7)% and (3.8$\pm$0.9)% during the $T_1$ and $T_2$, respectively. During the IXPE pointing, the optical polarization angle changed achromatically from $\sim$140$^\circ$ to $\sim$90$^\circ$ and back to $\sim$130$^\circ$. Despite several attempts, we only detected (99.7% conf.) the radio polarization once (during $T_2$, at 225.5 GHz): with degree (1.7$\pm$0.4)% and angle 112.5$^\circ$$\pm$5.5$^\circ$. The direction of the broad pc-scale jet is rather ambiguous and has been found to point to the east and south at different epochs; however, on larger scales (> 1.5 pc) the jet points toward the southeast ($\sim$135$^\circ$), similar to all of the MW polarization angles. Moreover, the X-ray to optical polarization degree ratios of $\sim$7 and $\sim$4 during $T_1$ and $T_2$, respectively, are similar to previous IXPE results for several HSP blazars. We present the results of seven years of multicolour photometric monitoring of a sample of 31 $\gamma$-ray bright blazars using the RINGO3 polarimeter on the Liverpool Telescope from 2013--2020. We explore the relationships between simultaneous observations of flux in three optical wavebands along with Fermi $\gamma$-ray data in order to explore the radiation mechanisms and particle populations in blazar jets. We find significant correlations between optical and $\gamma$-ray flux with no detectable time lag, suggesting leptonic emission processes in the jets of these sources. Furthermore, we find the spectral behaviour against optical and $\gamma$-ray flux for many sources is best fit logarithmically. This is suggestive of a transition between bluer-/redder-when-brighter into stable-when-brighter behaviour during high activity states; a behaviour that might be missed in poorly sampled data, resulting in apparent linear relationships., Comment: 32 pages, 35 figures

Multitasking with a touch screen user-interface while driving is known to impact negatively driving performance and safety. Literature shows that list scrolling interfaces generate more visual-manual distraction than structured menus and sequential navigation. Depth and breadth trade-offs for structured navigation have been studied. However, little is known on how secondary task characteristics interact with those trade-offs. In this study, we make the hypothesis that both menu's depth and task complexity interact in generating visual-manual distraction. Using a driving simulation setup, we collected telemetry and eye-tracking data to evaluate driving performance. Participants were multitasking with a mobile app, presenting a range of eight depth and breadth trade-offs under three types of secondary tasks, involving different cognitive operations (Systematic reading, Search for an item, Memorize items' state). The results confirm our hypothesis. Systematic interaction with menu items generated a visual demand that increased with menu's depth, while visual demand reach an optimum for Search and Memory tasks. We discuss implications for design: In a multitasking context, display design effectiveness must be assessed while considering menu's layout but also cognitive processes involved.

Photonic structures and time-crystals, wherein time is incorporated as an additional degree of freedom for light manipulation, have necessitated the development of analytical and semi-analytical tools. However, such tools are currently limited to specific configurations, leaving several unexplored physical phenomena akin to photonic time-crystals elusive. In this communication, using a coupled-wave theory approach, we unveil the occurring light propagation phenomena in a time-periodic bi-isotropic medium whose permittivity, permeability, and chirality parameter are periodic functions of time. Contrary to their static counterparts, we demonstrate that the considered dynamic medium couples only co-handed counter-propagating waves. In cases of non-constant impedance, we prove that two first-order momentum gaps are formed in the Brillouin diagram, resulting in parametric amplification with different amplification factors and corresponding momenta for the right- and left-handed modes, respectively. The presence of chirality plays a major role in manipulating lightwave signals by controlling the center of resonance, the corresponding bandwidth, and the amplification factor in a distinct fashion for each mode. For a finite ``time-slab'' of the medium, we analytically derive the scattering coefficients as functions of time and momentum, discussing how extreme values of optical rotation grant access to the temporal analog of the chirality-induced negative refraction regime. Finally, we demonstrate the mechanism under which elliptical polarizations may change field orientation whilst the electric field propagates in a momentum gap, thus simultaneously showcasing parametric amplification., Comment: 19 pages, 7 Figures

Genetic Algorithms have established their capability for solving many complex optimization problems. Even as good solutions are produced, the user's understanding of a problem is not necessarily improved, which can lead to a lack of confidence in the results. To mitigate this issue, explainability aims to give insight to the user by presenting them with the knowledge obtained by the algorithm. In this paper we introduce Partial Solutions in order to improve the explainability of solutions to combinatorial optimization problems. Partial Solutions represent beneficial traits found by analyzing a population, and are presented to the user for explainability, but also provide an explicit model from which new solutions can be generated. We present an algorithm that assembles a collection of Partial Solutions chosen to strike a balance between high fitness, simplicity and atomicity. Experiments with standard benchmarks show that the proposed algorithm is able to find Partial Solutions which improve explainability at reasonable computational cost without affecting search performance., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. Augmented Reality (AR) provides a safe and low-cost option for hazardous safety training that allows for the visualization of aspects that may be invisible, such as radiation. Effectively visually communicating such threats in the environment around the user is not straightforward. This work describes visually encoding radiation using the spatial awareness mesh of an AR Head Mounted Display. We leverage the AR device's GPUs to develop a real time solution that accumulates multiple dynamic sources and uses stencils to prevent an environment being over saturated with a visualization, as well as supporting the encoding of direction explicitly in the visualization. We perform a user study (25 participants) of different visualizations and obtain user feedback. Results show that there are complex interactions and while no visual representation was statistically superior or inferior, user opinions vary widely. We also discuss the evaluation approaches and provide recommendations.

Supermassive black holes disrupt passing stars, producing outbursts called tidal disruption events (TDEs). TDEs have recently gained attention due to their unique dynamics and emission processes, which are still not fully understood. Especially, the so-called optical TDEs, are of interest as they often exhibit delayed or obscured X-ray emission from the accretion disk, making the origin of the prompt emission unclear. In this paper, we present multiband optical polarization observations and optical spectrometry of a recent TDE candidate AT 2022fpx, alongside monitoring observations in optical, ultraviolet and X-rays. The optical spectra of AT 2022fpx show Bowen fluorescence as well as highly-ionized iron emission lines, which are characteristic of extreme coronal line emitters. Additionally, the source exhibits variable but low-polarized continuum emission at the outburst peak, with a clear rotation of the polarization angle. X-ray emission observed approximately 250 days after the outburst peak in the decay appear flare-like but is consistent with constant temperature black-body emission. The overall outburst decay is slower than for typical TDEs, and resembles more the ones seen from Bowen fluorescence flares. These observations suggest that AT 2022fpx could be a key source in linking different long-lived TDE scenarios. Its unique characteristics, such as extreme coronal line emission, variable polarization, and delayed X-ray flare, can be attributed to the outer shock scenario or a clumpy torus surrounding the supermassive black hole. Blazars are a highly variable subclass of active galactic nuclei that have been observed to vary significantly during a single night. This intranight variability remains a debated phenomenon, with various mechanisms proposed to explain the behaviour including jet energy density evolution or system geometric changes. We present the results of an intranight optical monitoring campaign of four blazars: TXS 0506+056, OJ287, PKS 0735+178, and OJ248 using the Carlos S\'anchez Telescope. We detect significant but colourless behaviour in OJ287 and both bluer- and redder-when-brighter colour trends in PKS 0735+178. Additionally, the g band shows a lag of ~10 min with respect to the r,i,z_s bands for PKS 0735+178 on 2023 January 17. This unexpected hard-lag in PKS 0735+178 is not in accordance with the standard synchrotron shock cooling model (which would predict a soft lag) and instead suggests the variability may be a result of changes in the jet's electron energy density distribution, with energy injection from Fermi acceleration processes into a post-shocked medium., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables

As the closest galaxy cluster, the Virgo Cluster is an exemplary environment for the study of the large-scale filamentary structure and physical effects that are present in cluster outskirts but absent from the more easily studied inner regions. Here, we present an analysis of the SRG/eROSITA data from five all-sky surveys. eROSITA allows us to resolve the entire Virgo cluster and its outskirts on scales between 1 kpc and 3 Mpc, covering a total area on the sky of about 25$^\circ$ by 25$^\circ$. We utilized image manipulation techniques and surface brightness profiles to search for extended emission, surface brightness edges, and features in the outskirts. We employed a method of comparing mean and median profiles to measure gas clumping out to and beyond the virial radius. Surface brightness analysis of the cluster and individual sectors of the cluster reveal the full extent of previously identified cold fronts to the north and south. The emissivity bias due to gas clumping, which we quantify over three orders of magnitude in the radial range, is found to be mild, consistent with previous findings. We find uniform clumping measurements in all directions, with no enhancements along candidate filaments. We find an estimated virial gas mass of $M_{\mathrm{gas},r

The eROSITA telescope array aboard the Spektrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) satellite began surveying the sky in December 2019, with the aim of producing all-sky X-ray source lists and sky maps of an unprecedented depth. Here we present catalogues of both point-like and extended sources using the data acquired in the first six months of survey operations (eRASS1; completed June 2020) over the half sky whose proprietary data rights lie with the German eROSITA Consortium. We describe the observation process, the data analysis pipelines, and the characteristics of the X-ray sources. With nearly 930000 entries detected in the most sensitive 0.2-2.3 keV energy range, the eRASS1 main catalogue presented here increases the number of known X-ray sources in the published literature by more than 60%, and provides a comprehensive inventory of all classes of X-ray celestial objects, covering a wide range of physical processes. A smaller catalogue of 5466 sources detected in the less sensitive but harder 2.3-5 keV band is the result of the first true imaging survey of the entire sky above 2 keV. We show that the number counts of X-ray sources in eRASS1 are consistent with those derived over narrower fields by past X-ray surveys of a similar depth, and we explore the number counts variation as a function of the location in the sky. Adopting a uniform all-sky flux limit (at 50% completeness) of F_{0.5-2 keV} > 5 \times 10^{-14}$ erg\,s$^{-1}$\,cm$^{-2}$, we estimate that the eROSITA all-sky survey resolves into individual sources about 20% of the cosmic X-ray background in the 1-2 keV range. The catalogues presented here form part of the first data release (DR1) of the SRG/eROSITA all-sky survey. Beyond the X-ray catalogues, DR1 contains all detected and calibrated event files, source products (light curves and spectra), and all-sky maps. Polar and chiral crystal symmetries confer a variety of potentially useful functionalities upon solids by coupling otherwise noninteracting mechanical, electronic, optical, and magnetic degrees of freedom. We describe two unstudied phases of the 3D perovskite, CsSnBr$_3$, which emerge below 85 K due to the formation of Sn(II) lone pairs and their interaction with extant octahedral tilts. Phase II (77 K<$T$<85 K, space group $P2_1/m$) exhibits ferroaxial order driven by a noncollinear pattern of lone pair-driven distortions within the plane normal to the unique octahedral tilt axis, preserving the inversion symmetry observed at higher temperatures. Phase I ($T$<77 K, space group $P2_1$) additionally exhibits ferroelectric order due to distortions along the unique tilt axis, breaking both inversion and mirror symmetries. This polar and chiral phase exhibits second harmonic generation from the bulk and a large, intrinsic polarization$-$electrostriction coefficient along the polar axis ($Q_{22}\approx$1.1 m$^4$ C$^{-2}$), resulting in acute negative thermal expansion ($\alpha_V=-9\times10^{-5}$ K$^{-1}$) through the onset of spontaneous polarization. The unprecedented structures of phases I and II were predicted by recursively following harmonic phonon instabilities to generate a tree of candidate structures and subsequently corroborated by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and polarized Raman and $^{81}$Br nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopies. Relativistic electronic structure scenarios compatible with reported photoluminescence measurements are discussed. Together, the polar symmetry, small bandgap, large spin-orbit splitting of Sn 5$p$ orbitals, and predicted strain sensitivity of the symmetry-breaking distortions suggest bulk samples and epitaxial films of CsSnBr$_3$ or its neighboring solid solutions as strong candidates for bulk Rashba effects.

The purpose of this report is to discuss the sustainability and scalability of Math for All (MFA) by returning to talk with past MFA program participants. Drawing on qualitative research methods, this report derives its findings from interviews with 12 teachers, 6 facilitators, and 5 administrators within two years of their participation in MFA. The findings of this report address the following: Key elements of MFA; Continuing impact of MFA; Competing priorities; Systems of support; School-based turnover; and Adaptation. Growing numbers of institutions have come to recognize the deficiencies in their systems, structures, processes, and practices that disrupt all students having equitable access to high-quality support, services, and academic programming to achieve their postsecondary attainment goals. College leaders have come to realize that today's students do not fit neatly into the historical understanding or model of a traditional college student and that institutions need to change their approaches to serving and ensuring the success of the students they now serve. Many institutions are changing how they operate on behalf of the students they serve and have committed resources to reform or implement new initiatives to improve academic programming, student supports and services, and operational structures and practices. However, the ways through which institutions have approached and navigated change vary, with no single defining model or specific set of guiding steps for institutions to follow and implement. As institutions pay more attention to equity and test new models and ways of serving college students, the field will benefit from a greater understanding of the contexts and conditions in which significant institutional changes to improve college student success are catalyzed and enabled. There is also a need for additional knowledge about the strategies and approaches that these institutions use to implement change, so that they can better assess the needs of the different populations of students they serve, make decisions about where and how to set priorities and invest resources, and coordinate actions across the campus to improve the experiences of and promote equity for students. This report examines institutional transformation (transformation) among the Frontier Set network: a group of 29 colleges, universities, and state systems (institutions) committed to pursuing transformation as a process of deep and pervasive change (Eckel et al., 2001; Kezar & Eckel, 2002). The Frontier Set network was brought together to better understand transformation--what it is and how it happens.

Metal halide perovskites have shown great performance as solar energy materials, but their outstanding optoelectronic properties are paired with unusually strong anharmonic effects. It has been proposed that this intriguing combination of properties derives from the "lone pair" 6$s^2$ electron configuration of the Pb$^{2+}$ cations, and associated weak pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect, but the precise impact of this chemical feature remains unclear. Here we show that in fact an $ns^2$ electron configuration is not a prerequisite for the strong anharmonicity and low-energy lattice dynamics encountered in this class of materials. We combine X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopies, and first-principles molecular dynamics calculations to directly contrast the lattice dynamics of CsSrBr$_3$ with those of CsPbBr$_3$, two compounds which bear close structural similarity but with the former lacking the propensity to form lone pairs on the 5$s^0$ octahedral cation. We exploit low-frequency diffusive Raman scattering, nominally symmetry-forbidden in the cubic phase, as a fingerprint to detect anharmonicity and reveal that low-frequency tilting occurs irrespective of octahedral cation electron configuration. This work highlights the key role of structure in perovskite lattice dynamics, providing important design rules for the emerging class of soft perovskite semiconductors for optoelectronic and light-harvesting devices.
