Abstract

The eighteenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS) is the first one for SDSS-V, the fifth generation of the survey. SDSS-V comprises three primary scientific programs, or "Mappers": Milky Way Mapper (MWM), Black Hole Mapper (BHM), and Local Volume Mapper (LVM). This data release contains extensive targeting information for the two multi-object spectroscopy programs (MWM and BHM), including input catalogs and selection functions for their numerous scientific objectives. We describe the production of the targeting databases and their calibration- and scientifically-focused components. DR18 also includes ~25,000 new SDSS spectra and supplemental information for X-ray sources identified by eROSITA in its eFEDS field. We present updates to some of the SDSS software pipelines and preview changes anticipated for DR19. We also describe three value-added catalogs (VACs) based on SDSS-IV data that have been published since DR17, and one VAC based on the SDSS-V data in the eFEDS field., Comment: Accepted to ApJS

2. Searching for young runaways across the sky

Abstract

We present a catalog of 3354 candidate young stars within 500 pc that appear to have been ejected from their parent associations with relative speeds of >5 km/s. These candidates have been homogeneously selected through performing a 2d spherical traceback of previously identified pre-main sequence candidates to various star forming regions, ensuring that the traceback age as well as the estimated age of a star is consistent with the age of the population, and excluding contaminants from the nearby moving groups that follow the dominant velocity currents in the field. Among the identified candidates we identify a number of pairs that appear to have interacted in the process of the ejection, these pairs have similar traceback time, and their trajectory appears to be diametrically opposite from each other, or they have formed a wide binary in the process. As the selection of these candidates is performed solely in 2d, spectral follow-up is necessary for their eventual confirmation. Unfortunately, recently released Gaia DR3 radial velocities appear to be unsuitable for characterizing the kinematics of low mass stars with ages <100 Myr, as the accretion, activity, and a variety of other spectral features that make them distinct from the more evolved stars do not appear to have been accurately accounted for in the data, resulting in significant artificially inflated scatter in their RV distribution., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted to MNRAS

3. Untangling the Galaxy III: Photometric Search for Pre-main Sequence Stars with Deep Learning

Abstract

A reliable census of pre-main sequence stars with known ages is critical to our understanding of early stellar evolution, but historically there has been difficulty in separating such stars from the field. We present a trained neural network model, Sagitta, that relies on Gaia DR2 and 2MASS photometry to identify pre-main sequence stars and to derive their age estimates. Our model successfully recovers populations and stellar properties associated with known star forming regions up to five kpc. Furthermore, it allows for a detailed look at the star-forming history of the solar neighborhood, particularly at age ranges to which we were not previously sensitive. In particular, we observe several bubbles in the distribution of stars, the most notable of which is a ring of stars associated with the Local Bubble, which may have common origins with the Gould's Belt., Comment: Model available at https://github.com/hutchresearch/Sagitta

4. Runaway Young Stars in the Orion Nebula

Abstract

The star forming region of the Orion Nebula (ONC) is ideal to study the stellar dynamics of young stars in a clustered environment. Using Gaia DR2 we search for the pre-main sequence stars with unusually high proper motions that may be representative of a dynamical ejection from unstable young triple systems or other close three-body encounters. We identify twenty-six candidate stars that are likely to have had such an encounter in the last 1 Myr. Nine of these stars could be traced back to the densest central-most region of the ONC, the Trapezium, while five others have likely interactions with other OB-type stars in the cluster. Seven stars originate from other nearby populations within the Orion Complex that coincidentally scattered towards the ONC. A definitive point of origin cannot be identified for the remaining sources.
