6. Observed climate trends, perceived impacts and community adaptation practices in Côte d’Ivoire

Abstract

Climate change is a serious threat to local communities in West Africa. This study evaluated climatic trends and the perceptions of farmers to climate change in central Côte d’Ivoire. We surveyed 259 households across three agro-ecological zones. The knowledge of farmers about climate change was compared to observed trends of various climatic parameters from meteorological records (1973-2016). Results from trend analysis and descriptive analysis showed that the minimum, maximum and mean temperatures and rainfall showed a significant upward trend in all ecoregions. The average temperature and amount of rainfall increased by 3.2% (0.89°C) and 166.58% (645.5 mm) respectively over the 44 years. Local farmers perceived an increasing trend in temperature (all respondents) and a decreasing trend in rainfall (91.51%). Most of the respondents identified deforestation (76.83%), natural climate variation (50.97%) and wildfires (31.27%) as the main causes of these climatic disturbances, which induced plant dieback (92.66%), poor crop growth (59.46%) and crop loss (20.46%). The impacts on people and their assets encompassed a decrease in household income (63.71%), demolition of roofs (44..4%) and walls (43.91%) of houses, the scarcity of water points (39.38%) and the emergence of new diseases (30.89%). These climatic disturbances resulted in specific endogenous on-farm and off-farm strategies to adapt to the impacts of observed changes on their livelihoods.

Abstract

The objective targeted here is, to establish the global portrait of physical environment of Karcia watershed. This is an essential step towards the control, protection and planning of its water resources. In that respect, emphasis is placed on geometrical, topographic and hydrographic characteristics, such information are necessary to predetermine watershed response to rainfall elements and characterize its flow. DEM of 30m of resolution was exploited due to its suitability for surface water flow modeling, while using the GIS approach. We have initially delimited watershed, generated DAM and hydrographic network. We have subsequently created the thematic maps and calculated physiographic indexes and parameters intervening in hydrological behavior. Results obtained are overall reliable, convincing and promising. Thus, Karcia watershed presents an elongated form: its length is 11 times greater than its width. It presents low relief, its topography decreases from NE and South towards the center. Maximum altitude equal to 50 m is located in upstream and minimum equal to 2m, in the downstream. More than 76% of topography has a slope less than 1.8% and the remainder varies between 1.8% and 7.2%. Karcia watershed is 3rd order stream and presents a poplar (or corridor) network type. It also presents a coarse drainage texture type and limited drainage density type. Interpretation of the results revealed that Karcia watershed is more adapted to infiltration than to runoff. These results provide interesting insights to watershed specialists for irrigation and flood protection projects.&nbsp

Abstract

The current food system (production, transport, processing, packaging, storage, retail, consumption, loss and waste) feeds the great majority of world population and supports the livelihoods of over 1 billion people. Since 1961, food supply per capita has increased more than 30%, accompanied by greater use of nitrogen fertilisers (increase of about 800%) and water resources for irrigation (increase of more than 100%). However, an estimated 821 million people are currently undernourished, 151 million children under five are stunted, 613 million women and girls aged 15 to 49 suffer from iron deficiency, and 2 billion adults are overweight or obese. The food system is under pressure from non-climate stressors (e.g., population and income growth, demand for animal-sourced products), and from climate change. These climate and non-climate stresses are impacting the four pillars of food security (availability, access, utilisation, and stability).

28. Sustainable Production of Tomato Using Fish Effluents Improved Plant Growth, Yield Components, and Yield in Northern Senegal

Abstract

Aquaculture and agriculture integration is essential for maximizing water and land productivity in arid and semi-arid regions. Thus, the increase in global water scarcity and the dual use of water for crop and fish production has the potential to optimize water use, dispose of aquaculture wastes, provide additional nutrients to crops, and reduce inorganic fertilizer usage, thus maximizing farm productivity. This greenhouse study was conducted to determine the effects of fish effluents on the growth, yield parameters, and yield of tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.). The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with six replications. The 13 treatments consisted of three irrigation water types (river water—control, Nile tilapia—Oreochromis niloticus, African sharptooth catfish—Clarias gariepinus), four fertilizers (chicken manure, cow manure, sheep manure; recommended rate of NPK—280 kg ha−1 of 10-10-20), and six mixed treatments with fish effluent and 50% of the applied rate of manure alone. Results showed that irrigation with C. gariepinus effluent increased the stem diameter by 21%, the number of flowers by 88%, the fruit number by 50%, the fruit diameter by 24%, the mean fruit weight by 34%, and total fruit weight of tomato by 96% compared to NPK treatments. These effects were more evident when C. gariepinus was mixed with poultry, cow, and sheep manures, which resulted in significantly greater values than recommended rates of NPK. The higher productivity observed from the combined use of C. gariepinus and manure treatments (133% increase, on average) compared to NPK treatments was related to the continuous supply of nutrients and the increase of yield parameters. 37. Impact of climate change on the habitat range and distribution of Cordyla pinnata, Faidherbia albidaand Balanites aegyptiacain Senegal

Abstract

The survival of agroforestry species in Senegal is threatened by climate change. Hence, it has become important to identify the most endangered species for prioritising conservation efforts. This study aimed to assess the impact of climate change on the distribution of three key agroforestry species in Senegal: Faidherbia albida, Balanites aegyptiaca, and Cordyla pinnata. To predict their habitat suitability, we evaluated the performance of five algorithms: Random Forest, Boosted Regression Trees, Generalised Linear Models, Maximum Entropy, and Support Vector Machines. Two shared socio-economic pathways (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5) were used over four time slices (2041–2060, 2061–2080, and 2081–2100). The dataset included 19 bioclimatic and 12 soil variables, with 5342 species occurrences collected from fieldwork and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility website. The main variables influencing the species distribution were selected based on collinearity, jackknife tests, and their contribution. The results revealed that the Random Forest outperformed other models in terms of performance, with an area under the curve (AUC) greater than 0.95 for all species. The distribution of F. albidaand C. pinnatawas mainly influenced by precipitation related variables, while that of B. aegyptiacawas mainly influenced by both precipitation and temperature related variables. The current habitat range of F. albida, C. pinnata, and B. aegyptiacarepresents 45% (88,515.63 km2), 14.43% (28,381.55 km2) and 29.73% (58,479.53 km2) of the total area of Senegal, respectively. However, the models showed a decrease in the habitat range of C. pinnata, regardless of the scenario or time horizon. The distribution of F. albidais predicted to increase under SSP2-4.5 and decrease under SSP5-8.5. In contrast, B. aegyptiacais predicted to be more resilient to climate change as its habitat suitability would expand under both scenarios. Hence, conservation efforts should prioritise C. pinnataand, to a lesser extent, F. albida.

Abstract

In this work, we studied the mixed convection of the airflow in a tunnel open at both ends. The tunnel has a sinusoidal trace and the horizontal ceiling is provided with an opening in the center. The tunnel floor is uniformly heated. Although of interest for many industrial applications, the configuration of this study has been studied very little from an academic point of view. Coupled equations of Naiver-Stokes and energy are solved numerically by the finite volume method with the Boussinesq hypothesis. We analyzed the effect of the parameters that characterize heat transfer, and the flow structure. Several situations have been considered by varying the Richardson number (1.3610-3≤Ri≤2.17.104) for a Prandtl number Pr = 0.71.
