Abstract

Magic numbers in finite particle systems correspond to specific system sizes that allow configurations with low free energy, often exhibiting closed surface shells to maximize the number of nearest neighbors. Since their discovery in atomic nuclei, magic numbers have been essential for understanding the number-structure-property relationship in finite clusters across different scales. However, as system size increases, the significance of magic numbers diminishes, and the precise system size at which magic number phenomena disappear remains uncertain. In this study, we investigate colloidal clusters formed through confined self-assembly. Small magic number clusters display icosahedral symmetry with closed surface shells, corresponding to pronounced free energy minima. Our findings reveal that beyond a critical system size, closed surface shells disappear, and free energy minima become less pronounced. Instead, we observe a distinct type of colloidal cluster, termed football cluster, which retains icosahedral symmetry but features lower-coordinated facets disconnected by terraces. A sphere packing model demonstrates that forming closed surface shells becomes impossible beyond a critical system size, explaining the breakdown of magic numbers in large confined systems., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures (main text) and 15 pages, 15 figures (supplementary materials)

2. UK Higher Education Sector's Response to the War in Ukraine

Abstract

Purpose: This article aims to address the response from the higher education (HE) sector in the United Kingdom (UK) to the full-scale war in Ukraine which started in 2022. Design/methodology/approach: Relying on theoretical ideas of neoliberalism and the collection and thematic analysis of relevant official communications from six UK universities, the article uncovers three major ways in which these universities have been responding to the war. Findings: They include (1) altruistic responses, (2) the promotion of equal treatment of all people and (3) the condemnation of the invasion and its implications for UK's international cooperation in HE. These responses suggest the strengthening of the liberal ideals in the UK HE sector, heavily dominated by marketisation. Originality/value: This analysis is significant not only for advancing a very limited scholarship on the topic of HE in the context of this war but also for understanding the development of the neoliberal landscape of UK HE and neoliberalism as a phenomenon in times of crises.

3. Disobedience, (Dis)Embodied Knowledge Management, and Decolonization: Higher Education in The Gambia

Abstract

In this work, we sought to uncover the key strategies and challenges to the integration of Indigenous knowledge as knowledge management practices at a public university in The Gambia. It is often axiomatic in the literature that the incorporation of diverse epistemologies is a key resource for sustainable development; therefore, activities associated with the management of knowledge, particularly in higher education, are worthy of elucidation. We discovered that knowledge management activities at a university in The Gambia were often informal and required the invisible work of faculty. It was through the implicit use of tacit knowledge and epistemic disobedience that faculty were able to build upon a colonized curriculum that denied the presence of other knowledge. However, in the end, faculty were dependent on the power of referents within and without the institution to formalize their knowledge management practices. This work fills an essential gap in the extant literature on how the work of university faculty and managers, when situated within a knowledge management perspective, can contribute to decolonization and foster sustainable development.

Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to assess the human health risks associated with groundwater consumption in Abakaliki Metropolis using Water Quality Index (WQI) and HERisk code. Groundwater samples (n = 32) obtained from boreholes were analysed for pH, Zn, Pb. Fe, Cr and NO3 to evaluate both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks. The average concentrations of these parameters, except Pb (0.02 mg/L) and Cr (0.06 mg/L), were within permissible limits. The distribution of the average concentrations of the parameters followed the order: Zn > Cr > Fe > NO3 > Pb. The WQI ranged from 0.15 to 505.67 classifying 12.50% of the water samples as excellent sources of drinking water, 9.38% as good, 9.38% as poor, 12.50% as very poor and 56.25% unfit for drinking. Introduction: While some patients recovered, others died across the world thereby losing their loved ones. The objective of the current study is to determine statistical differences in means of the COVID-19 infected population (laboratory confirmed), discharged cases(recovered) and deaths resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic in Rivers State, Nigeria. Material and Methods: In this study, extraction of the infected population (laboratory confirmed), discharged cases, and deaths from COVID-19 was carried out from data obtained from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control which covered 572 days (25th March 2020 - 17th October 2021). The test for the significance of means among the variables was done using a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by the Tukey HSD test. The two variables whose means do not significantly differ were tested for strength of relationship and dependence using correlation analysis and cubic polynomial function respectively. Results: Results showed that there is a statistically significant difference between the infected population, discharged cases, and deaths from COVID-19 as obtained from one-way ANOVA (F(2, 1710) = 121.958, p = 0.000). Abstract

Abstract Higher Education (HE) can play a fundamental role in the achievement of sustainable development, and particularly the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as captured in the Incheon declaration. However, what approach HE should take in this mission is a contested space. In this paper, we interrogate the idea of indigeneity. The pursuit to ascertain how an indigenised approach to internationalisation can support or enhance the contribution of HE curricula towards sustainable development is driven by the understanding that for sustainable development to be achieved at all, the process of knowledge creation must strive to make integral those epistemologies that exist beyond the “West”; an understanding that aligns, in particular, with Target 7 of the United Nations (UN) SDG 4 and seeks to empower victims of epistemic violence. In doing so, we employed a bibliographic research which captured a dual approach consisting of a bibliometric analysis of literature and a review of case studies. The findings from both methods suggest that internationalisation appears in different disciplinary contexts, but these are not always aligned with indigenisation. We maintain that the construct of (inter)culturality can address aspects within the framework of indigeneity to boost the internationalisation of HE curricula and outcomes for sustainable development. Central to this are four factors, namely: the need for effective human engagement with (inter)cultural competence, medium/place of curricula interaction, the initiative form and the reach of the development.

Abstract

Abstract H3K27M diffuse midline gliomas (DMG), including diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG), exhibit cellular heterogeneity comprising less-differentiated oligodendrocyte precursors (OPC)-like stem cells and more differentiated astrocyte (AC)-like cells. Here, we establish in vitro models that recapitulate DMG-OPC-like and AC-like phenotypes and perform transcriptomics, metabolomics, and bioenergetic profiling to identify metabolic programs in the different cellular states. We then define strategies to target metabolic vulnerabilities within specific tumor populations. We show that AC-like cells exhibit a mesenchymal phenotype and are sensitized to ferroptotic cell death. In contrast, OPC-like cells upregulate cholesterol biosynthesis, have diminished mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), and are accordingly more sensitive to statins and OXPHOS inhibitors. Additionally, statins and OXPHOS inhibitors show efficacy and extend survival in preclinical orthotopic models established with stem-like H3K27M DMG cells. Together, this study demonstrates that cellular subtypes within DMGs harbor distinct metabolic vulnerabilities that can be uniquely and selectively targeted for therapeutic gain.

10. Considerations for Relational Research Methods for Use in Indigenous Contexts: Implications for Sustainable Development

Abstract

Research has oftentimes been carried out in Indigenous communities for the sole benefit of the western researcher. As a result, feelings of distrust toward researchers and research institutions have become prevalent among Indigenous peoples. However, this distrust can be resolved through the use of research approaches and methods that reflect Indigenous perspectives, beliefs, and values and that centre the entire research process on the Indigenous community in question and their need for sustainable development. One such Indigenous research approach is rooted in relationality, whereby all living things and the natural world have a shared history and future. In this article, we explore the use of relational methods in research with Indigenous communities to decolonise the research process and capture Indigenous experiences using an inherently Indigenous approach. A systematic review of the extant literature to identify the key characteristics of relational methods used when conducting research with Indigenous peoples was conducted for the period 2012 to 2021. Five key characteristics of relational methods stood out, namely: collaboration, trusting and reciprocal relationships, flexibility, relational data, and reflexivity. These findings are discussed in the context of postcolonial theory and considerations for researching sustainable development in Indigenous communities.

11. The Orchestration of a Sustainable Development Agenda in the European Higher Education Area

Abstract

Purpose: This paper aims to ask how the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) has orchestrated a sustainable development (SD) agenda in its international policy since 2020. Design/methodology/approach: By drawing on theoretical ideas around policy orchestration as a key UN governing strategy and applying them to the analysis of the progression of the SD agenda in the EHEA, the paper conducts a thematic analysis of six recent key EHEA international policy documents and 19 interviews with key Bologna stakeholders in France, Germany and Italy. Findings: The resultant analysis uncovers three overarching key themes that show the EHEA has the capacity to mitigate pitfalls in the UN's SD agenda; some weaknesses of the UN's orchestration of SD are translated into weaknesses in the EHEA's formulation of its SD agenda; and the further development of an SD agenda as an essential direction of EHEA's work. The paper then goes on to discuss how EHEA policies only mention SD discourse, omit concrete plans for its implementation and keep the very meaning of SD ambiguous throughout international policy documents. Originality/value: The authors offer three original recommendations that the EHEA should adopt in an attempt to mitigate the issues raised in the run-up to its 2030 deadline for implementing its policies--the EHEA should develop an explicit definition of SD; recognise the Euro-centredness of EHEA policies and open them up to other voices; and cite academic research when developing policy documents.

Abstract

Bifurcations in kinetic pathways decide the evolution of a system. An example is crystallization, in which the thermodynamically stable polymorph may not form due to kinetic hindrance. Here, we use confined self-assembly to investigate the interplay of thermodynamics and kinetics in the crystallization pathways of finite clusters. We report the observation of decahedral clusters from colloidal particles in emulsion droplets and show that these decahedral clusters can be thermodynamically stable just like icosahedral clusters. Our hard sphere simulations reveal how the development of the early nucleus shape passes through a bifurcation that decides the cluster symmetry. A geometric argument explains why decahedral clusters are kinetically hindered and why icosahedral clusters can be dominant even if they are not the thermodynamic ground state., Comment: Article + supplementary information. 41 pages, 22 figures

Poor agronomic practices and fungal disease prevalence have been identified as major constraints to tomato production, sometimes resulting to up to 80 % losses in tomato yield; hence making it difficult for local communities to overcome food and nutrition insecurity. Across two cropping campaigns, the efficacy of carbonized rice husk (CRH), calcium (Ca) in Folcrop (Ca-B) and their combinations with the fungicide Mancozeb (Fung), were evaluated on Raja F1 and Cobra F1 26 tomato varieties against blight and fusarium wilt diseases and on fruit shelf-life. Treatments included: no application (control), Ca + Fung, CRH + Fung, Ca + CRH + Fung, Ca + CRH, and fungicide alone. Fungi disease incidence and severity were determined by direct observation. Abstract

BackgroundSeveral studies have highlighted alteration in the gut microbiome associated with the onset and progression of diseases. Recognizing the potential of gut microbiota as biomarkers, this systematic review seeks to synthesize current data on the intricate relationship between the host gut microbiome profiles and their usefulness for the development of diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic approaches to control human schistosomiasis.MethodsA systematic literature review was carried out by searching for relevant studies published until date, that is May 2024, using Medline, Embase, Global Health, Web of Science, and Global Index Medicus databases. The keywords used to select articles were "Gut microbiome", "Gut Microbiota", "Schistosomiasis", "Bilharziasis ", and "Human". Extracted data were analysed qualitatively from the selected articles.ResultsOf the 885 articles retrieved and screened, only 13 (1.47%) met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Of the included studies, 6 (46.2%) explored alterations of gut microbiome in schistosome-infected patients, 4 (30.7%) in patients with liver pathologies, and 3 (23.1%) in patients treated with praziquantel. Bacteria from the genera Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium, Blautia and Megasphaera were associated with S. japonicum and S. haematobium infection in school-aged children, whereas infection with S. mansoni rather associated with Klebsiella and Enterobacter. The gut microbiota signature in patient with schistosomiasis-induced liver pathology was reported only for S. japonicum, and the genus Prevotella appeared as a non-invasive biomarker of S. japonicum-associated liver fibrosis. For S. mansoni-infected school-aged children, it further appeared that the treatment outcome following praziquantel administration associated with the abundance in the gut microbiome of bacteria from the classes Fusobacteriales, Rickettsiales and Neisseriales.ConclusionThe host gut microbiome appears to be a valuable, non-invasive, but still poorly utilized, source of host biomarkers potentially informative for better diagnosing, prognosing and treating schistosomiasis. Further studies are therefore needed to comprehensively define such gut microbial biomarkers of human schistosomiasis and catalyse the informed development of gut microbiome-based tools of schistosomiasis control.

Abstract

Abstract Background The maternal mortality and perinatal mortality rate in Cameroon are among the highest worldwide. To improve these outcomes, we conducted a formative qualitative assessment to inform the adaptation of a mobile provider-to-provider intervention in Cameroon. We explored the complex interplay of structural barriers on maternity care in this low-resourced nation. The study aimed to identify structural barriers to maternal care during the early adaptation of the mobile Medical Information Service via Telephone (mMIST) program in Cameroon. Methods We conducted in-depth interviews and focus groups with 56 key stakeholders including previously and currently pregnant women, primary healthcare providers, administrators, and representatives of the Ministry of Health, recruited by purposive sampling. Thematic coding and analysis via modified grounded theory approach were conducted using NVivo12 software. Results Three main structural barriers emerged: (1) civil unrest (conflict between Ambazonian militant groups and the Cameroonian government in the Northwest), (2) limitations of the healthcare system, (3) inadequate physical infrastructure. Civil unrest impacted personal security, transportation safety, and disrupted medical transport system. Limitations of healthcare system involved critical shortages of skilled personnel and medical equipment, low commitment to evidence-based care, poor reputation, ineffective health system communication, incentives affecting care, and inadequate data collection. Inadequate physical infrastructure included frequent power outages and geographic distribution of healthcare facilities leading to logistical challenges. Conclusion Dynamic inter-relations among structural level factors create barriers to maternity care in Cameroon. Implementation of policies and intervention programs addressing structural barriers are necessary to facilitate timely access and utilization of high-quality maternity care.

25. Repeat mediated excision of gene drive elements for restoring wild-type populations.

Abstract

Here, we demonstrate that single strand annealing (SSA) can be co-opted for the precise autocatalytic excision of a drive element. We have termed this technology Repeat Mediated Excision of a Drive Element (ReMEDE). By engineering direct repeats flanking the drive allele and inducing a double-strand DNA break (DSB) at a second endonuclease target site within the allele, we increased the utilization of SSA repair. ReMEDE was incorporated into the mutagenic chain reaction (MCR) gene drive targeting the yellow gene of Drosophila melanogaster, successfully replacing drive alleles with wild-type alleles. Sequencing across the Cas9 target site confirmed transgene excision by SSA after pair-mated outcrosses with yReMEDE females, revealing ~4% inheritance of an engineered silent TcG marker sequence. However, phenotypically wild-type flies with alleles of indeterminate biogenesis also were observed, retaining the TGG sequence (~16%) or harboring a silent gGG mutation (~0.5%) at the PAM site. Additionally, ~14% of alleles in the F2 flies were intact or uncut paternally inherited alleles, indicating limited maternal deposition of Cas9 RNP. Although ReMEDE requires further research and development, the technology has some promising features as a gene drive mitigation strategy, notably its potential to restore wild-type populations without additional transgenic releases or large-scale environmental modifications.

27. Assessing the impact of a potential canine vaccine for the control of Chagas disease: a mathematical modeling study

Abstract

IntroductionChagas disease, a zoonotic infection transmitted by triatomine bugs, poses serious public health risks in endemic areas. As dogs are important reservoirs in the disease’s spread, developing a canine vaccine could be transformative for controlling disease transmission to dogs and humans.MethodsWe developed a compartmental Susceptible-Infected model to simulate the transmission dynamics of Trypanosoma cruzi, considering interactions among dogs, humans, cats, rodents, and triatomine vectors. We used the model to assess the direct and indirect impacts of two vaccine mechanisms—all-or-nothing and leaky—on disease incidence across different host populations. The sensitivity of the model’s outcomes to changes in input parameters was analyzed using univariate sensitivity analysis.ResultsOur model showed that with a 90% vaccine efficacy, an all-or-nothing vaccine could reduce the cumulative incidence of T. cruzi in dogs by 91.3% over five years. The 60% and 30% vaccine efficacies would result in reductions of 63.47% and 33%, respectively, over 5 years. Similarly, the leaky vaccine achieved a 92.62% reduction in dog infections over 5 years with 90% efficacy. The indirect effects on human T. cruzi infection were notable; the all-or-nothing vaccine reduced human disease incidence by 14.37% at 90% efficacy, while the leaky vaccine achieved a 32.15% reduction over 5 years. Both vaccine mechanisms may substantially reduce T. cruzi incidence among dogs, and generate indirect benefit to other hosts, such as humans, by reducing their infection risk. The indirect benefits of vaccination were heavily influenced by the proportion of triatomine bugs blood meals taken from dogs.DiscussionThe study highlights the potential of targeted canine vaccination in controlling Chagas disease transmission and burden in endemic countries. It provides additional evidence for pursuing the development of a canine vaccine as a valuable tool for Chagas disease elimination.

Abstract

The moderating effect of going concern on the influence of audit attributes on the financial reporting quality of listed Nigerian banks was examined in this study. An ex-post facto research design was employed on a population consisting of 23 banks. 13 banks were purposively selected for a period 10 years ranging from 2013-2022. Data used for this study was analyzed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling. Audit attributes was proxy with audit fees, audit specialization, audit independence, and audit size while financial reporting quality was measured with discretionary accrual. Going concern was used as the moderating variable. Auditors’ opinion was used to measure going concern. The outcome of the analysis discovered that going concern (β = 0.878, p > 0.634) at 5% level of significance has a positive but insignificant effect on financial reporting quality whereas going concern (β = 0.052, p < 0.028) at 5% level of significance has a positive and significant effect on audit attributes of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Also, all the audit attributes used in this study have a positive and significant effect on financial reporting quality except for audit specialization which has an insignificant relationship with financial reporting quality. The study concluded that audit attributes have a significant effect on financial reporting quality and that going concern has a moderating effect on audit attributes and financial reporting quality. The study recommends that banks should ensure that their going concern ability is being assessed by the external auditor to guarantee the survival of the banks and gain the trust of the investors and shareholders.

Abstract

Despite several measures adopted by the government to improve the efficiency of the manufacturing firms in Nigeria, the performance of these firms is below expectation. The poor performance of Nigerian manufacturing firms has prompted concern for Nigeria's economic prospects in the long run. This needs to be addressed because, under this scenario, most development objectives would be difficult to achieve. Therefore, there is a need for Nigerian manufacturing firms to achieve high productivity to improve their performance. This study, therefore, evaluated the level of technical efficiency and examined the determinants of technical inefficiency in Nigerian manufacturing firms. It employed panel data of fifty-five manufacturing firms quoted in the Nigeria Stock Exchange Market from 1999 to 2020. The result from the Stochastic Frontier Analysis technique showed that all inputs (capital, labor, raw materials, cost of energy and other expenses) impacted positively on firms' output at a 1% significance level. But the impact of raw material is the highest. It was also found that the mean efficiency for Nigerian manufacturing firms is 52.74%. Finally, it was revealed that the age of the firm, total assets and management efficiency are the technical inefficiency determinants in Nigerian manufacturing firms. This implies that the efficiency level of manufacturing firms in Nigeria can be improved by 47.26%. Also, manufacturing output can be enhanced by providing adequate raw materials. Furthermore, the efficiency of manufacturing firms in Nigeria is enabled by the managerial capability and asset size of the firms. The study suggested that government should give tax concessions on the purchase of raw materials (sourced domestically and externally) to encourage availability and use to optimize production. Also, manufacturing firms should encourage skill acquisition programs through various on-the-job training programs for managers and their entire workforce to boost labor productivity and performance. In addition, policies that will encourage good education system should be adopted by the government which will help the nation to produce trained and skilled labor force. Finally, manufacturing firms should mobilize more resources for the procurement, consolidation and expansion of the size of their assets using their undistributed corporate profit. Through its regulatory bodies [such as Federal Ministry of Industries, Trade and Investment, Nigeria Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN)], government should enforce minimal asset requirements for each sub-sector (industry) as a basis for takeoff and subsequent renewal of licence for the manufacturing firms in Nigeria. Abstract

Welding is a common method for joining metals by heating them to the welding temperature. Exposure to welding fumes has a serious effect on the health of welders. This study examined serum zinc variability and body composition as route for hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia in welders exposed to welding fumes and smoking, exploring the possibilities for the risk of possible cardiovascular disease. The experimental case control design was adopted in the study. Forty apparently healthy adult males were randomly selected comprising of twenty control group (non-smokers and smokers without welding experience) and twenty experimental group (non-smokers and smokers with welding experience) welders. Data obtained were represented as Mean ± SEM while comparison of means across group was done by one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's multiple comparison for post hoc test at p-value < 0.05 level of significance using Graph Pad prism version 8. The data obtained showed that the body mass index (BMI) of smokers (non-welders and welders) were slightly reduced while that of non-smoking welders was increased compared to the control. The serum zinc level increased among the smoking welders, while the smoking non-welders and non-smoking welders decreased when compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Exposure to welding fumes has been shown to increase total cholesterol levels compared to the control. Weld fumes significantly (p < 0.05) increased high-density lipoproteins (HDL) levels among smoking non-welders compared to the control group, while, HDL was reduced in non-smoking welders and smoking welders, respectively (p < 0.05). Triglyceride levels significantly (p < 0.05) increased in all experimental groups compared to control levels (p < 0.05). Exposure to welding fumes and smoking caused significant changes in serum zinc, HDL and triglycerides levels with implications for the formation of plaques around the arteries interfering with the effective flow of blood through the vascular system, with implications of hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia. This study recommends that further studies should be done using biomarkers from urine or toe nails.

32. (Un)Subjugating Indigenous Knowledge for Sustainable Development: Considerations for Community-Based Research in African Higher Education

Abstract

The most recent incarnation of development goals, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), call for a more intentional integration of higher education in development. Research can provide an avenue by which this done, developing relevant solutions to social problems. But who benefits from research, and whose knowledge counts in this process? Formal engagement with Indigenous knowledge, honoring the voices, artifacts, histories, traditions, and "knowledges" of those Indigenous communities that buttress the university can potentially contribute to both the social and environmental justice at the heart of sustainable development. Our research was focused on how African academics at two public universities and community members in The Gambia and Zambia constructed the role of Indigenous knowledge within their community-based research activities. We highlight the specific epistemic strategies academic researchers used to engage Indigenous communities and knowledge, the dilemmas faced in the field, and the connections made through research relationships to sustainable development.

39. Substrate temperature effect on the structural, morphological and optical properties of pyrolyzed bi-phase Cu2O–CuO thin films

Abstract

Multiphase nanomaterials are fascinating due to the synergistic effect between the crystalline phases that lead to improved device performance. Publications are available for the synthesis of monophasic copper oxides, such as Cu2O and CuO, and the mixed-phase Cu2O–CuO counterpart using different synthesis methods. However, literature report is scarce that focuses on the fabrication of bi-phase Cu2O–CuO thin films by the spray pyrolysis technique without phase transformation to form the monophasic counterparts. The present work attempts to prepare solely mixed-phase Cu2O–CuO films through small incremental change in substrate temperature, in steps of 20 °C. Structural analysis of the pyrolyzed films revealed the formation of a bi-phase Cu2O–CuO crystal system. The crystallite size increased from 18.64 to 23.94 nm, microstrain decreased from 7.134 ×10−4 to 5.625 ×10−4, while stacking faults decreased from 3.753 ×10−3 to 2.942 ×10−3 with an increase in temperature. Microstructural analysis showed nanoaggregates with increased particle size at increasing temperature. The films exhibited a common optical bandgap of 2.61 eV. The values of the static refractive index and optical electronegativity were found to be 2.47 and 0.70, respectively. The surface roughness increased from 41.3 to 90.9 nm with substrate temperature.

Abstract

IntroductionFor years, gender inequality has conditioned women’s participation in sport, exposing them to difficult situations and numerous barriers to face. However, no previous research has analyzed the situation of women in sport from the perspective of the athletes themselves, or from the perspective of the coaches, teachers or managers who work with them.MethodsThis study examines the perspectives of European women athletes, sports managers, physical education teachers, and sports coaches, on gender equity in sports across six European countries: Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey. The research design was consistent with a critical realist epistemology, and the sampling method was non-probabilistic by convenience. A total of 42 female athletes (mean age: 24.37 ± 8.27 years old; mean sport experience: 6.67 ± 7.76 years) and 45 sports managers, physical education teachers or coaches (mean age: 47.00 ± 11.99 years old; mean sport experience: 9.62 ± 10.60 years), participated in six focus groups in the same countries, in groups of 6 to 10 participants per focus group. Focus groups were conducted to stimulate collective discussions, build upon and question ideas, and reach a consensus on questions drawn up by a group of experts, following previous methodologies. The data analysis involved transcribing, translating, and contextualizing the focus group recordings into English. Inductive thematic analysis, reflexive thematic analysis, and codes and themes within the data were created using NVivo 12 Pro.ResultsThe main topics discussed by the female athletes were “gender inequality in general and in sport,” “barriers to gender equity,” “reasons for abandonment,” “needs,” “environment role models” and “tools for the gender equity in sport.” The main topics discussed by the sports managers, physical education teachers, and coaches were “gender inequality in general,” “gender inequality in sports,” “tools” and “reasons, motives, drivers.” The results of the study revealed that gender inequality in sports is influenced by a broader social context, where stereotypes, biases, and discrimination persist. The participants also highlighted the challenges, barriers, and needs that women athletes face in their careers, such as a lack of resources, support, visibility, and recognition. Moreover, the participants suggested some strategies to promote gender equity in sports, such as increasing investment, awareness, and education, creating policies and legislation, fostering women’s leadership and role modeling, and developing mixed and inclusive sports projects.DiscussionAccording to athletes and sports managers/teachers/coaches, gender inequality is still present in sport. There are barriers and challenges that need to be addressed such as lack of resources, visibility, and recognition for female athletes. Among the strategies that can be used to reverse this situation are increasing investment, awareness, and education, creating policies and legislation, fostering women’s leadership, and developing mixed and inclusive sport projects.

Data of four IPPIC cohorts (237 228 pregnancies) from the US (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 2018; 233 483 pregnancies), UK (Allen et al, 2017; 1045 pregnancies), Norway (STORK Groruddalen research programme, 2010; 823 pregnancies), and Australia (Rumbold et al, 2006; 1877 pregnancies) were included in the development of the model.Results The IPPIC birth weight model was developed with random intercept regression models with backward elimination for variable selection. Internal-external cross validation was performed to assess the study specific and pooled performance of the model, reported as calibration slope, calibration-in-the-large, and observed versus expected average birth weight ratio. Meta-analysis showed that the apparent performance of the model had good calibration (calibration slope 0.99, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.88 to 1.10; calibration-in-the-large 44.5 g, −18.4 to 107.3) with an observed versus expected average birth weight ratio of 1.02 (95% CI 0.97 to 1.07). The proportion of variation in birth weight explained by the model (R2) was 46.9% (range 32.7-56.1% in each cohort). On internal-external cross validation, the model showed good calibration and predictive performance when validated in three cohorts with a calibration slope of 0.90 (Allen cohort), 1.04 (STORK Groruddalen cohort), and 1.07 (Rumbold cohort), calibration-in-the-large of −22.3 g (Allen cohort), −33.42 (Rumbold cohort), and 86.4 g (STORK Groruddalen cohort), and observed versus expected ratio of 0.99 (Rumbold cohort), 1.00 (Allen cohort), and 1.03 (STORK Groruddalen cohort); respective pooled estimates were 1.00 (95% CI 0.78 to 1.23; calibration slope), 9.7 g (−154.3 to 173.8; calibration-in-the-large), and 1.00 (0.94 to 1.07; observed v expected ratio). The model predictions were more accurate (smaller mean square error) in the lower end of predicted birth weight, which is important in informing clinical decision making.Conclusions The IPPIC birth weight model allowed birth weight predictions for a range of possible gestational ages. The model explained about 50% of individual variation in birth weights, was well calibrated (especially in babies at high risk of fetal growth restriction and its complications), and showed promising performance in four different populations included in the individual participant data meta-analysis. Further research to examine the generalisability of performance in other countries, settings, and subgroups is required.Trial registration PROSPERO CRD42019135045

Abstract

In this study, we screened novel dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP4) inhibitors from the ConMedNP library consisting of 3507 molecules. Interestingly, molecular docking, ADMET, and the anti-diabetic activity predictions suggest that three molecules, namely OTH_UD_XX06_1, GB19, and BMC_000104, have a high binding affinity toward DPP4. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation results suggest that these hit molecules have a stable binding pose and occupy the binding pockets throughout the 200 ns simulation. The presence of intermolecular H-bonding between the ligands and DPP4 was observed throughout the simulation period. Thus, docking and MD results, predicted that the three compounds were the most potent DPP4 inhibitors that could putatively bind to the DPP4 active site via both conventional H-bonding and hydrophobic interactions. These results could aid the discovery of new drugs to treat type 2 diabetes.

43. Perception of Poultry Farmers’ on Effectiveness of Poultry Extension Service Delivery in Calabar Municipal Area of Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract

The objective of this paper was to analyze poultry farmer’s perception on the effectiveness of poultry extension service delivery in Calabar Municipal Area of Cross River State, Nigeria using appropriate standard methods by selecting 120 registered poultry farmers to obtain Primary data by questionnaire. Result from the study shows that poultry farmers had a mean age of 43 years. Majority (66%) of the farmers were men and about 86% of them were married. The farmers had a mean household size of 5 persons with majority (68%) of them having tertiary education. On average, the farmers had nine years of farming experience and a mean stock size of 1,175 birds. The result revealed 43% of the farmers had contact with extension agents once in the last one year. Farmers’ perception of the delivery of extension and advisory services revealed that the farmers' perception was favourable and they expressed satisfaction with the delivery of four out of the nine poultry extension services available to them. They include; training on routine operations (4.0), advice on improved breeds of poultry (3.6), training on biosecurity measures (3.5) and training on diseases prevention and cure (3.3). The most important constraints as perceived by the respondents to limit effective extension services delivery among the poultry farmers includes; lack of funding of extension service (81%), inadequate number of extension agents (68%). The study recommends that the government should immediately boost its financing of the ADPs and recruit more extension agents to achieve effective coverage of more farmers.

44. Factors Influencing Poultry Farmers’ Participation in Agricultural Insurance in Calabar Municipal Area of Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study analyzed factors influencing poultry farmers’ participation in agricultural insurance in Calabar Municipal Area of Cross River State, Nigeria using 136 poultry farmers in a multistage sampling strategy to choose respondents. Questionnaire administration and interview schedule were used to gather primary data. The study's findings indicate that 67% of the poultry farmers were men, with an average age of 43 years. Ninety (93) percent were married, with an average household size of five people. The survey also revealed that the mean stock size of the farmers was 1795 birds, 9 years of mean farming experience, and 50% of the farmers had postsecondary education. The results also indicate that 71% of respondents did not contact extension services, and 73% did not hold membership in any farmer's associations. The results also indicate that 79% of respondents had no access to loans for their farming business. Regarding knowledge of and participation in agricultural insurance programmes, 70% of respondents were aware that such programmes existed. However, only 31% of farmers took advantage by participating in the insurance scheme. According to the results of the logit regression, farmers' participation in agricultural insurance was found to be significantly influenced by age (-.0538), sex (-.7837), availability to credit (1.2366), and association membership (-1.2068). Among the difficulties poultry farmers encounter while attempting to enroll in agricultural insurance include; rigorous procedure in indemnity payment (79%), high cost of premium (74%), delay in assessment of losses (70.5), inadequate knowledge of insurance (40%), disbelieve in insurance companies (29%) and low compensation (26%). The study suggested that insurance schemes should ensure payment of indemnity (compensation) in a timely and efficient manner. In doing so, it will increase the trust and confidence of farmers who are unsure about the insurance plan.

Abstract

Faecal Microbial Transplantation (FMT), have been shown to be successfully managed along with a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, including Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). FMT is a medical procedure that involves a donor transferring healthy gut bacteria to the recipient. The effectiveness of FMT is thought to be due to the ability of the healthy gut to restore balance to the recipient's microbiome, which is the community of microorganisms that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. One of the key advantages of FMT is that it is a relatively simple and low-cost treatment option, compared to other therapies that may be more invasive or require long-term medication use. However, FMT is not without its limitations, including the potential for the transfer of infectious agents from the donor to the recipient and the potential for negative side effects in some patients. In this research, we discuss the current state of the evidence on FMT, including its potential benefits and risks, as well as future directions for research in this area.

Abstract

Diffuse midline gliomas (DMGs) bearing driver mutations of histone 3 lysine 27 (H3K27M) are incurable brain tumors with unique epigenomes. Here, we generated a syngeneic H3K27M mouse model to study the amino acid metabolic dependencies of these tumors. H3K27M mutant cells were highly dependent on methionine. Interrogating the methionine cycle dependency through a short-interfering RNA screen identified the enzyme methionine adenosyltransferase 2A (MAT2A) as a critical vulnerability in these tumors. This vulnerability was not mediated through the canonical mechanism of MTAP deletion; instead, DMG cells have lower levels of MAT2A protein, which is mediated by negative feedback induced by the metabolite decarboxylated S-adenosyl methionine. Depletion of residual MAT2A induces global depletion of H3K36me3, a chromatin mark of transcriptional elongation perturbing oncogenic and developmental transcriptional programs. Moreover, methionine-restricted diets extended survival in multiple models of DMG in vivo. Collectively, our results suggest that MAT2A presents an exploitable therapeutic vulnerability in H3K27M gliomas.

Abstract

Mathematical models are widely recognized as an important tool for analyzing and understanding the dynamics of infectious disease outbreaks, predict their future trends, and evaluate public health intervention measures for disease control and elimination. We propose a novel stochastic metapopulation state-space model for COVID-19 transmission, based on a discrete-time spatio-temporal susceptible/exposed/infected/recovered/deceased (SEIRD) model. The proposed framework allows the hidden SEIRD states and unknown transmission parameters to be estimated from noisy, incomplete time series of reported epidemiological data, by application of unscented Kalman filtering (UKF), maximum-likelihood adaptive filtering, and metaheuristic optimization. Experiments using both synthetic data and real data from the Fall 2020 Covid-19 wave in the state of Texas demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures
