1. Near-Infrared Observations of Outflows and YSOs in the Massive Star-Forming Region AFGL 5180

Abstract: Methods: Broad- and narrow-band imaging of AFGL 5180 was made in the NIR with the LBT, in both seeing-limited ($\sim0.5\arcsec$) and high angular resolution ($\sim0.09\arcsec$) Adaptive Optics (AO) modes, as well as with HST. Archival ALMA continuum data was also utilized. Results: At least 40 jet knots were identified via NIR emission from H$_2$ and [FeII] tracing shocked gas. Bright jet knots outflowing from the central most massive protostar, S4, are detected towards the east of the source and are resolved in fine detail with the AO imaging. Additional knots are distributed throughout the field, likely indicating the presence of multiple driving sources. Sub-millimeter sources detected by ALMA are shown to be grouped in two main complexes, AFGL 5180 M and a small cluster $\sim15\arcsec$ to the south, AFGL 5180 S. From our NIR continuum images we identify YSO candidates down to masses of $\sim 0.1\:M_\odot$. Combined with the sub-mm sources, this yields a surface number density of such YSOs of $N_* \sim 10^3 {\rm pc}^{-2}$ within a projected radius of about 0.1 pc. Such a value is similar to those predicted by models of both Core Accretion from a turbulent clump environment and Competitive Accretion. The radial profile of $N_*$ is relatively flat on scales out to 0.2~pc, with only modest enhancement around the massive protostar inside 0.05~pc. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the utility of high-resolution NIR imaging, in particular with AO, for detecting outflow activity and YSOs in distant regions. The presented images reveal the complex morphology of outflow-shocked gas within the large-scale bipolar flow of a massive protostar, as well as clear evidence for several other outflow driving sources in the region. Abstract: We exploit the increased sensitivity of the recently installed AO SOUL at the LBT to obtain new high-spatial-resolution NIR images of the massive young stellar object IRAS20126+4104 and its outflow. We aim to derive the jet proper motions and kinematics, as well as to study its photometric variability by combining the novel performances of SOUL together with previous NIR images. We used both broad-band ($K_{s}$, $K'$) and narrow-band (Br$\gamma$, H2) observations from a number of NIR cameras (UKIRT/UFTI,SUBARU/CIAO,TNG/NICS,LBT/PISCES,and LBT/LUCI1) to derive maps of the continuum and the H$_2$ emission in the 2.12 $\mu$m line. Three sets of images, obtained with AO systems (CIAO,2003; FLAO,2012; SOUL,2020), allowed us to derive the proper motions of a large number of H$_2$ knots along the jet. Photometry from all images was used to study the jet variability. We derived knot proper motions in the range of 1.7-20.3 mas yr$^{-1}$ (i.e. 13-158 km s$^{-1}$ at 1.64 kpc, avg. outflow tangential velocity $\sim$ 80 km s$^{-1}$). The derived knot dynamical age spans a $\sim$ 200-4000 yr interval. A ring-like H$_2$ feature near the protostar location exhibits peculiar kinematics and may represent the outcome of a wide-angle wind impinging on the outflow cavity. Both H$_2$ geometry and velocities agree with those inferred from proper motions of the H$_2$O masers, located at a smaller distance from the protostar. Although the total H$_2$ line emission from the knots does not exhibit time variations at a $\widetilde{>}$ 0.3 mag level, we have found a clear continuum flux variation (radiation scattered by the dust in the cavity opened by the jet) which is anti-correlated between the blue-shifted and red-shifted lobes and may be periodic (with a period of $\sim$ 12-18 yr). Abstract: We aim to refine the sample of isolated early-type galaxies in the AMIGA catalogue via high resolution imaging. Here we report the result from a pilot study investigating two candidates, KIG 685 and KIG 895, in K-band with the laser guide star and wavefront sensing facility ARGOS} at LBT. Observations, obtained during commissioning time, achieved a PSF of ~0.25". We present the data reduction and the PSF analysis from the best closed loop exposures to investigate the galaxies' morphological structure, including their nuclear region. We used PROFILER for the decomposition of the azimuthal 1D light distribution and GALFIT for the 2D analysis, accounting for ARGOS's PSF. KIG 685 was found to be a S0 galaxy and has been modeled with two Sersic components representing a pseudo-bulge (n_{1D}=2.87+-0.21, n_{2D}=2.29+-0.10) and a disk (n_{1D}=0.95+-0.16, n_{2D}=0.78+-0.10). Nearly symmetric ring/shell-like structures emerge after subtracting the GALFIT model from the image. KIG 895 shows a clear irregular arm-like structure, in which the northern outer arm is reminiscent of a tail. The galaxy body is a disk, best fitted by a single Sersic profile (n_{1D}=1.22+-0.1; n_{2D}=1.32+-0.12), i.e. KIG 895 is a bulge-less very late-type spiral. ARGOS high resolution images clearly revealed interaction signatures in KIG 895. Abstract: Gravitationally lensed systems allow a detailed view of galaxies at high redshift. High spatial- and spectral-resolution measurements of arc-like structures can offer unique constraints on the physical and dynamical properties of high-z systems. We present near-infrared spectra centred on the gravitational arcs of six known z ~ 2 lensed star-forming galaxies of stellar masses of 10^9-10^11 Msun and star formation rate (SFR) in the range between 10 and 400 Msun/yr. Ground layer adaptive optics (AO)-assisted observations are obtained at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) with the LUCI spectrographs during the commissioning of the ARGOS facility. We used MOS masks with curved slits to follow the extended arched structures and study the diagnostic emission lines. Combining spatially resolved kinematic properties across the arc-like morphologies, emission line diagnostics and archival information, we distinguish between merging and rotationally supported systems, and reveal the possible presence of ejected gas. For galaxies that have evidence for outflows, we derive outflow energetics and mass-loading factors compatible with those observed for stellar winds in local and high-z galaxies. We also use flux ratio diagnostics to derive gas-phase metallicities. The low signal-to-noise ratio in the faint H$\beta$ and nitrogen lines allows us to derive an upper limit of ~ 0.15 dex for the spatial variations in metallicity along the slit for the lensed galaxy J1038. Analysed near-infrared spectra presented here represent the first scientific demonstration of performing AO-assisted multi-object spectroscopy with narrow curved-shape slits. The increased angular and spectral resolution, combined with the binocular operation mode with the 8.4-m-wide eyes of LBT, will allow the characterisation of kinematic and chemical properties of a large sample of galaxies at high-z in the near future., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: Having completed its commissioning phase, the Advanced Rayleigh guided Ground-layer adaptive Optics System (ARGOS) facility is coming online for scientific observations at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). With six Rayleigh laser guide stars in two constellations and the corresponding wavefront sensing, ARGOS corrects the ground-layer distortions for both LBT 8.4m eyes with their adaptive secondary mirrors. Under regular observing conditions, this set-up delivers a point spread function (PSF) size reduction by a factor of ~2--3 compared to a seeing-limited operation. With the two LUCI infrared imaging and multi-object spectroscopy instruments receiving the corrected images, observations in the near-infrared can be performed at high spatial and spectral resolution. We discuss the final ARGOS technical set-up and the adaptive optics performance. We show that imaging cases with ground-layer adaptive optics (GLAO) are enhancing several scientific programmes, from cluster colour magnitude diagrams and Milky Way embedded star formation, to nuclei of nearby galaxies or extragalactic lensing fields. In the unique combination of ARGOS with the multi-object near-infrared spectroscopy available in LUCI over a 4x4 arcmin field of view, the first scientific observations have been performed on local and high-z objects. Abstract: We report on the first atom interferometer based on Bragg diffraction in a fountain of alkaline-earth atoms, namely $^{88}$Sr. We demonstrate large momentum transfer to the atoms up to eight photon recoils and the use of the interferometer as a gravimeter with a sensitivity $\delta g/g=4\times 10^{-8}$. 9. Test of Einstein Equivalence Principle for 0-spin and half-integer-spin atoms: Search for spin-gravity coupling effects

Abstract: We report on a conceptually new test of the equivalence principle performed by measuring the acceleration in Earth's gravity field of two isotopes of strontium atoms, namely, the bosonic $^{88}$Sr isotope which has no spin vs the fermionic $^{87}$Sr isotope which has a half-integer spin. The effect of gravity upon the two atomic species has been probed by means of a precision differential measurement of the Bloch frequency for the two atomic matter waves in a vertical optical lattice. We obtain the values $\eta = (0.2\pm 1.6)\times10^{-7}$ for the E\"otv\"os parameter and $k=(0.5\pm1.1)\times10^{-7}$ for the coupling between nuclear spin and gravity. This is the first reported experimental test of the equivalence principle for bosonic and fermionic particles and opens a new way to the search for the predicted spin-gravity coupling effects., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: ARGOS is the laser guide star facility of the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). It implements a Rayleigh Laser Guide Star system that provides Ground Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO) correction for the LUCIs, the 2 wide- field near-infrared imagers and multi-object spectrographs installed on the 2 eyes of LBT. In this paper we describe how LBT’s adaptive optics operations have been tailored to ARGOS’s use cases based on the experience developed during over the ARGOS commissioning. We focus on all the aspects that are influenced by the use of the Laser Guide Stars, from collimation to acquisition and LGS guiding and we details the sequences to start, pause and resume the adaptive correction.

Abstract: The SOUL project is upgrading the 4 SCAO systems of LBT, pushing the current guide star limits of about 2 magnitudes fainter thanks to Electron Multiplied CCD detector. This improvement will open the NGS SCAO correction to a wider number of scientific cases from high contrast imaging in the visible to extra-galactic source in the NIR. The SOUL systems are today the unique case where pyramid WFS, adaptive secondary and EMCCD are used together. This makes SOUL a pathfinder for most of the ELT SCAO systems like the one of GMT, MICADO and HARMONI of E-ELT, where the same key technologies will be employed. Today we have 3 SOUL systems installed on the telescope in commissioning phase. The 4th system will be installed in a few months. 42. Epidemiological Impact on Use of Antibiotics in Patients Hospitalized for COVID-19: A Retrospective Cohort Study in Italy.

Abstract: The increased incidence of antimicrobial resistance during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a very important collateral damage of global concern. The cause is multifactorial and is particularly related to the high rates of antibiotic use in COVID-19 patients with a relatively low rate of secondary co-infection. To this end, we conducted a retrospective observational study of 1269 COVID-19 patients admitted during the years 2020, 2021 and 2022 in two Italian hospitals, with a focus on bacterial co-infections and antimicrobial therapy. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between bacterial co-infection, antibiotic use and hospital death after adjustment for age and comorbidity. Bacterial co-infection was detected in 185 patients. The overall mortality rate was 25% ( n = 317). Concomitant bacterial infections were associated with increased hospital mortality (β = 1.002, p < 0.001). A total of 83.7% ( n = 1062) of patients received antibiotic therapy, but only 14.6% of these patients had an obvious source of bacterial infection. There was a significantly higher rate of hospital mortality in patients who received antibiotics than in those who did not (χ 2 = 6.22, p = 0.012). Appropriate prescribing and the rational use of antimicrobials according to the principles of antimicrobial stewardship can help prevent the emergence of antibiotic resistance.

43. Anti-TNFα Drugs and Interleukin Inhibitors: Epidemiological and Pharmacovigilance Investigation in COVID-19 Positive Patients.

Abstract: Cytokine patterns and immune activation in patients with Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) seem to resemble the case of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Biological drugs, such as anti-tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and interleukin (IL) inhibitors, appear to be protective against adverse outcomes of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, these treatments are associated with an increased risk of secondary infections. The aim of the study was to examine the association between the use of immunomodulatory drugs and the risk of SARS-CoV-2-associated positivity, hospitalization and death compared to other commonly prescribed treatment regimens among patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases., Methods: All patients with RA, Psoriasis and IBD were included in this observational analysis and treated with anti-TNFα, IL-inhibitors, Methotrexate (MTX) and Sulfasalazine drugs during the year 2020-2021. The population consisted of 932 patients and demographic, clinical and pharmacological data were analyzed., Results: Although no significant differences were observed between patients treated with biological and synthetic drugs in terms of hospitalization and death, the multivariate logistic model showed that the type of drug influences the possibility of COVID-19 positivity., Conclusions: The results of this analysis support the use of biological drugs and justify further research investigating the association of these biological therapies with COVID-19 outcomes.

44. Sartans and ACE Inhibitors: Mortality in Patients Hospitalized with COVID-19. Retrospective Study in Patients on Long-Term Treatment Who Died in the Italian Hospitals of Area Vasta n.5-Marche Region.

Abstract: Introduction: During the 2019 Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), a concern emerged regarding a possible correlation between the severe form of SARS-CoV-2 infection and administration of ACE-Inhibitors (ACE-I) and Sartans (ARB), since long-term use of these drugs may potentially result in an adaptive response with up-regulation of the ACE 2 receptor. Given the crucial role of ACE2, being the main target for virus entry into the cell, the potential consequences of ACE2 up-regulation have been a source of debate. The aim of this retrospective cohort study on COVID-19-positive patients who died is to investigate whether previous long-term exposure to ACE-I and/or ARB was associated with higher mortality due to COVID-19 infection, compared to all other types of drug treatment., Methods: We analysed the clinical and demographic data of 615 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 at the two hospitals of the Vasta Area n.5, between March 2020 and April 2021. Among them, 86 patients, treated with ACE-Is and/0 ARBs for about 12 months, died during hospitalization following a diagnosis of acute respiratory failure. Several quantitative and qualitative variables were recorded for all patients by reading their medical records., Results: The logistic model showed that the variables that increase mortality are age and comorbid diseases. There were no demonstrable mortality effects with ACE-I and ARB intake., Conclusions: The apparent increase in morbidity in patients with COVID-19 who received long-term treatment with ACE-I or ARB is not due to the drugs themselves, but to the conditions associated with their use.

45. Z Plasty

Abstract: Z-plasty is a common interposition surgical technique utilized in plastic and reconstructive surgery to revise scars. Previously referred to as “converging triangular flaps,” Z-plasty involves 2 equal and opposing transposition flaps that are raised and transposed along a shared axis. A benefit of this procedure over other scar revision techniques is it does not require skin excision. This technique changes the direction of the scar, so it is more easily hidden within a border of facial regions or relaxed skin tension lines (RSTL). Additionally, this technique may be employed to release scar contracture after burns. Common variants of the basic Z-plasty include the planimetric Z-plasty, double-opposing Z-plasty, compound Z-plasty, unequal triangle Z-plasty, and four-flap Z-plasty, z-plasty in series or parallel. Unequal triangles, also known as the “half-Z,” can be subtly altered into an S-plasty to create flap tips that are less susceptible to vascular compromise. S-plasty is useful in areas with an altered dermis, frequently encountered in burns and skin grafts.[2] The earliest records of this technique date back to the early 1800s in a publication at the Philadelphia Hospital Department of Surgery when Horner described single transposition flaps. The geometry of what clinicians considered the Z-plasty then was not the same as it is today. At the turn of the century, the “Z-plasty method” became more popular. A publication by Berger in 1904 noted equal limbs and equal angles. In 1914, Morestin proposed multiple Z-plasties. However, it was Limberg, in 1929, who delved into the dynamics of the flap being a rotational and advancement flap. Abstract: Facial fractures make up a comparatively small proportion of Emergency Department visits, but of these injuries, the most common are nasal and mandible fractures. While the vast majority of nasal fractures can be managed without surgery, operative intervention for mandible fractures is relatively common due to the complexity of the structure’s anatomy and function. 47. Oral Melanoma

Abstract: Oral melanoma is a very rare malignancy that progresses rapidly and proves to be particularly aggressive. This lesion accounts for 0.2% to 8% of all melanomas and 1% to 2% of all oral malignancies. Compared with other melanomas, mucosal melanomas have the lowest percentage of 5-year survival rate, likely due to delayed detection. The clinical aspect of oral melanoma is varied. Still, it usually presents as a black-brown patch, macule, or nodular lesion with different shades of grey, red, purple, or areas of depigmentation. Amelanotic lesions have also been reported. The etiology, risk factors, and pathophysiology are still poorly understood. Biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosing oral melanomas, and radical surgical excision is the treatment of choice. 48. Acitretin

Abstract: Acitretin belongs to a group of drugs known as retinoids. Retinoids include natural and synthetic compounds that have similar activity to vitamin A. Vitamin A helps regulate the immune system, impacts cellular growth, differentiation, proliferation, and plays a role in embryonic development. Other effects of retinoids include immunologic anti-inflammatory effects, induction of apoptosis, and inhibition of tumor promotion. 49. Paramedian Forehead Flaps

Abstract: Interpolated flaps, along with rotation, transposition, and island flaps, comprise the pivotal flap category of facial reconstruction techniques. Interpolated flaps differ from other pivotal flaps, though, in that the base, or pedicle, of the flap is not contiguous with the defect and necessarily passes over the intervening tissue between the defect and the harvest site. Many surgeons would classify interpolated flaps as regional flaps rather than local flaps, given that the tissue used to reconstruct the defect when an interpolated flap is transferred is not originally adjacent to the defect. While there are numerous interpolated flap options that may be employed in facial reconstruction - nasolabial flaps, temporoparietal fascia flaps, pericranial flaps, inferior turbinate flaps, facial artery musculomucosal flaps, and temporalis muscle flaps, among others - the paramedian forehead flap had remained a workhorse technique since World War I, even though its origins stretch back to at least 600 BC, when it was used for repair of nasal defects from punitive mutilation. The sebaceous gland quality and thickness of central forehead tissue closely resemble those of the nose, and the flap's vascularity is highly reliable, which is why this technique has been chosen for nasal reconstruction so consistently throughout history. Utilization of the paramedian forehead flap in nasal reconstruction requires at least a two-stage procedure, with operations typically separated by three weeks, and some surgeons prefer to utilize a third stage to permit further refinement of the flap's contour. Even though flap harvest necessarily leaves a vertical scar on the forehead, it is not always particularly conspicuous, and the ultimate cosmetic and functional outcomes tend to be very acceptable to patients and surgeons alike., (Copyright © 2022, StatPearls Publishing LLC.)

50. Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Abstract: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is an epithelial malignancy showing evidence of follicular cell differentiation and a set of distinctive nuclear features. It is the most frequent thyroid neoplasm and carries the best overall prognosis. The tumor usually appears as an irregular solid mass but in rare cases, it may have cystic features. One key feature of PTC is its ability to invade adjacent structures like lymphatics. About 10% of patients may present with metastatic disease at initial presentation.
