Abstract

The experimental setup of the new measurement of 239Pu fission and capture cross-section in the n_TOF time-of-flight facility at CERN is presented. The measurement aims to address the needs and demands of nuclear data users. The experiment incorporates an innovative fast Fission Fragment Detector and the n_TOF Total Absorption Calorimeter, enabling the implementation of the fission tagging technique. Preliminary results exhibit the robust performance of the detector systems, along with the high quality of the new 239Pu samples. These samples were exclusively produced for this measurement by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Geel.

Abstract

Neutron cross section measurements are often made relative to a neutron cross section standard. Thus, the accuracy of the neutron standards determines the best possible accuracy of the neutron measurements. The 235U(n,f) cross section is widely used as reference, while it is considered a standard at thermal point and between 0.15 to 200 MeV. For this reason, additional cross section data for the 235U(n,f) reaction are useful in order to improve the accuracy and to extend the energy range of the standard. In this work, preliminary results of the measurement of the 235U(n,f) cross-section relative to the standard 10B(n,a) reaction are presented. The high accuracy measurement was performed at the experimental area EAR-1 of the n_TOF facility at CERN, aiming at covering the energy range from the thermal region up to approximately 100 keV. The samples were produced at JRC-Geel in Belgium, while the experimental setup was based on Micromegas detectors.

Abstract

We present the state of the art of the n_TOF Collaboration Working Group activity dedicated to study how to solve the puzzle about the existence of the so called new particle X17, spotted for the first time few years ago by a team at ATOMKI in Hungary and since then never confirmed by other independent experimental collaborations but also never refuted. An “ad hoc” detection setup is under realization for this goal, in order to reach an angular resolution of the two emerging trajectories from the X17 decay and an energy resolution for the invariant mass reconstruction enough to cast light in a definitive way about this puzzle. To design the present detection setup we work in close contact with the Pisa Nuclear Theory team, that has deeply studied the implication of X17 existence and extracted by the ATOMKI results its eventual nature, kinematics and general properties.

Abstract

Abstract The bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and specific systemic autoimmune diseases are associated with cardiovascular manifestation, including aortic aneurysm. We reported a case of 64 year-old patient with BAV and a history of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and who developed ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm. The patient presented also the homozygosity for genetic variants of MMP9, ACE, MTHFR and PAI-1 genes. Gene-environmental interactions may represent an additional pathogenetic dimension in the still challenging management of the abnormalities of the aortic wall, including dilatation, aneurysm and dissection.

Abstract

Abstract Degenerative aortic valve stenosis includes a range of disorder severity from mild leaflet thickening without valve obstruction, "aortic sclerosis", to severe calcified aortic stenosis. It is a slowly progressive active process of valve modification similar to atherosclerosis for cardiovascular risk factors, lipoprotein deposition, chronic inflammation, and calcification. Systemic signs of inflammation, as wall and serum C-reactive protein, similar to those found in atherosclerosis, are present in patients with degenerative aortic valve stenosis and may be expression of a common disease, useful in monitoring of stenosis progression.

9. On the (un)effectiveness of Proton Boron Capture in Proton Therapy

Abstract

We present calculations and simulations on the role of the p+$^{11}$B$\to$3$\alpha$ reaction in proton therapy. This reaction has been recently suggested to be responsible for a decrease in the survival probability of tumor cells, when they are irradiated with low-energy protons. However, at the concentration levels typical of the proposed boron carrier (sodium borocaptate, Na$_{2}$B$_{12}$H$_{11}$SH, in short BSH), i.e. less than 100 ppm, both calculations and Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the dose related to this reaction is orders of magnitude lower than the dose delivered by the primary proton beam inside the tissues. These calculations cast some doubts on the claim of an important role played by Proton Boron Capture in enhancing the therapeutic effectiveness of proton therapy, and suggest that other mechanisms should be investigated in order to explain the observed decrease in the survival probability.

Abstract

Background: The advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) is an independent prognostic biomarker used to assess inflammation and nutritional status in various cancers, heart failure, and acute coronary syndromes. This study investigates the prognostic significance of ALI in patients experiencing ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI), comparing its predictive abilities with the established Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR). Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 1171 patients from the Matrix Registry, encompassing demographic and clinical data for STEMI cases treated with pPCI, and ALI was determined using the formula [serum albumin (g/dL) × body mass index (kg/m2)]/NLR at the time of hospital admission. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. Results: Of the 1171 patients, 86 died during the follow-up period. Univariate analysis identified age, female gender, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, prior myocardial infarction (PMI), lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and reduced ALI as factors associated with mortality. Multivariate analysis confirmed age (HR: 1.1, 95% CI: 1.05–1.11, p < 0.001) and PMI (HR: 2.4, 95% CI: 1.4–4.3, p = 0.001) as prominent independent predictors, alongside ALI (HR: 0.95, 95% CI: 0.92–0.97, p < 0.001) and LVEF (HR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.97–0.99, p = 0.04). An ALI cut-off of ≤10 indicated a higher mortality risk (HR: 2.3, 95% CI: 1.5–3.7, p < 0.001). The area under the curve for ALI (0.732) surpassed that for NLR (0.685), demonstrating ALI's superior predictive capability. Conclusions: ALI is an independent prognostic factor for all-cause mortality in STEMI patients undergoing pPCI, showing greater discriminatory power than NLR, particularly in patients with ALI values ≤ 10, who face a 2.3-fold higher mortality risk. Abstract

140 Ce (n, y) is a key reaction for slow neutron-capture (s-process) nucleosynthesis due to being a bottleneck in the reaction flow. For this reason, it was measured with high accuracy (uncertainty˜5%) at the n_TOF facility, with an unprecedented combination of a high purity sample and low neutron-sensitivity detectors. The measured Maxwellian averaged cross section is up to 40% higher than previously accepted values. Stellar model calculations indicate a reduction around 20% of the s-process contribution to the Galactic cerium abundance and smaller sizeable differences for most of the heavier elements. Abstract

Acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) based composites with a high content of tungsten and bismuth oxide were developed using an innovative process to obtain lead‐free x‐ray shielding materials. ABS was chosen for its good mechanical properties and its widespread availability as a recycled material. The composites underwent flexural tests, Shore D hardness tests, thermogravimetric and morphological analysis, and their x‐ray attenuation properties were determined through numerical simulations and experimental measurements. Despite their high filler content (up to 75 wt%), the composites showed good filler dispersion within the polymeric matrix and maintained their mechanical properties. Across the investigated energy range (50–150 kV), the lead equivalence for x‐ray shielding was achieved with composite plates containing 75 wt% of tungsten and bismuth oxide, at thickness values corresponding to a weight increase of only 29% and 36%, respectively, in comparison to lead. These findings pave the way for a new generation of lead‐free x‐ray shielding materials. Abstract

The RootProf computer program applies multivariate model‐free analysis to crystallographic data and to any x, y experimental data in general. It has been enhanced with several new features, including a graphical user interface, multithreading implementation and additional pre‐processing options. The program also includes novel qualitative analysis methods, such as semiquantitative estimates derived from principal component analysis (PCA) and restrained PCA to extract the diffraction signal from active atoms. Additional quantitative analysis methods have been included, involving the combination of different datasets or the application of the standard addition method as well as tools for crystallinity analysis, kinetic analysis and extraction of free crystal cell parameters from a pair distribution function profile. The ROOT data analysis framework supports the program and can be installed on the current major platforms such as Windows, Linux and Mac OSX with detailed user documentation included. Abstract

Aim: New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) is a complication not infrequent in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) and has been associated with worse in-hospital and long-term prognosis. We aimed to develop and validate a risk score based on common clinical risk factors and routine blood biomarkers to assess the early incidence of NOAF post-pPCI, before discharge. Methods: The risk score for NOAF occurrence during hospitalisation (about 5 days) was developed in a cohort of 1135 consecutive STEMI patients undergoing pPCI while was externally validated in a temporal cohort of 771 STEMI patients. Biomarkers and clinical variables significantly contributing to predicting NOAF were assessed by multivariate Cox-regression analysis. Results: Independent predictors of NOAF were age ≥80 years (6.97 [3.40-14.30], hazard ratio [95% CI], P < .001), leukocyte count > 9.68 × 103 /μL (2.65 [1.57-4.48], P < .001), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) > 80 ng/L (2.37 [1.13-4.95], P = .02) and obesity (2.07 [1.09-3.92], P = .03). By summing the hazard ratios of these predictors we derived the ALBO (acronym derived from: Age, Leucocyte, BNP and Obesity) risk score which yielded high C-statistics in both the derivation (0.734 [0.675-0.793], P < .001) and validation cohort (0.76 [0.688-0.831], P < .001). In both cohorts, using Kaplan-Meier risk analysis, the ALBO score identified a tertile of patients at highest risk (ALBO >4 points), with percentages of NOAF incidence of 30.8% and 27.4% in the derivation and validation cohort, respectively. Conclusion: The ALBO risk score, comprising biomarkers and clinical variables that can be assessed in hospital setting, could help to identify high-risk patients for NOAF after pPCI so that a prompter action can be taken., This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with CC BY-NC-ND license terms and conditions.

Methods and results:We retrospectively enrolled 625 consecutive STEMI patients undergoing pPCI for whom a complete laboratory inflammatory pattern was available. Routinely blood measured laboratory parameters were collected at the moment of admission. No reflow was defined as Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) flow-grade lower than 3. The population was divided into two groups using a cut-off centered at 65 years. Compared to younger patients, elderly patients had higher mean values of fibrinogen, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), leukocytes, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), C reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR). Conversely, lymphocyte count and albumin levels were higher in young patients. In elderly patients, the values of NLR, CAR as well as leukocytes, fibrinogen and neutrophils were associated with no-reflow, while in young patients only BNP value was associated. At multivariate Cox regression analysis, only BNP and NLR resulted as independent predictors of all-cause mortality in the whole population and in elderly patients. Conclusions:Elderly STEMI patients on admission had a higher acute pro-inflammatory profile than young patients, associated to coronary no-reflow and mortality outcome. These results suggest that a different therapeutic approach between elderly and young STEMI patients should be agreed.

Abstract

Objective: To assess the different effect of filters’ application during helmet-CPAP delivered with three different flow generators on the delivered fresh gas flow, FiO2, and the noise level inside and outside the helmet. Methods: In a bench study, three flow generators (air-oxygen blender, turbine ventilator and Venturi system) were used to generate two different gas flows (60 L/min and 80 L/min), with a fixed FiO2 at 0.6, to perform a helmet-CPAP on a manikin. Three different fixed PEEP valves (7.5, 10, and 12.5 cmH2O) were applied at the expiratory port. Gas flow, FiO2 and noise were recorded for each Flow-generator/Flow/PEEP combination, first without filter interposition and then after positioning a heat and moister exchanger filter (HMEF) at the helmet inlet port. Results: The application of the HMEF lead to a significant difference in the flow variation among the three flow generators (p < 0.001). Compared to baseline, the highest flow reduction was observed with the VENTURI (−13.4 ± 1.2 %, p < 0.001), a slight increase with the BLENDER (1.2 ± 0.5 %, p < 0.001), whereas no difference was recorded with the TURBINE (0.1 ± 0.6 %, p = 0.12). After HMEF was interposed, a significant FiO2 variation was observed only with VENTURI (11.3 ± 1.8 %, p < 0.001). As for the noise, the TURBINE was the least noisy system, both with and without the filter interposition. Conclusions: Flow generators used to deliver helmet-CPAP have different characteristics and responses to HMEF interposition. Users should be aware of the effects on FiO2 and flow of the different devices in order to make a precise setup of the circuit.

28. A Novel Frailty Score Based on Laboratory Parameters (FIMS Score) for the Management of Older Patients with Severe Aortic Stenosis.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a novel score based on common laboratory parameters able to identify frail and sarcopenic patients as well as predict mortality in elderly patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) for tailored clinical decision-making. A total of 109 patients (83 ± 5 years; females, 68%) with AS underwent a multidisciplinary pre-operative assessment and finalized a "frailty-based management" for the AS interventional treatment. Laboratory parameters of statistically significant differences between sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic individuals were tested in the structural equation model (SEM) to build a Frailty Inflammation Malnutrition and Sarcopenia score (FIMS score). Mortality at 20 months of follow-up was considered an outcome. FIMS score, in particular, the cut-off value ≥ 1.28 was able to identify "frail" and "early frail" patients and predict mortality with a sensitivity of 83.3% and 82.6%, respectively (p = 0.001) and was an independent determinant associated with a higher risk of mortality (HR 5.382; p-value = 0.002). The FIMS score, easily achievable and usable in clinical practice, was able to identify frail and sarcopenic patients as well as predict their adverse clinical outcomes. Abstract

International audience; Background: The N14(n,p)C14 reaction is of interest in neutron capture therapy, where nitrogen-related dose is the main component due to low-energy neutrons, and in astrophysics, where N14 acts as a neutron poison in the s process. Several discrepancies remain between the existing data obtained in partial energy ranges: thermal energy, keV region, and resonance region.Purpose: We aim to measure the N14(n,p)C14 cross section from thermal to the resonance region in a single measurement for the first time, including characterization of the first resonances, and provide calculations of Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS).Method: We apply the time-of-flight technique at Experimental Area 2 (EAR-2) of the neutron time-of-flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN. B10(n,α)Li7 and U235(n,f) reactions are used as references. Two detection systems are run simultaneously, one on beam and another off beam. Resonances are described with the R-matrix code sammy.Results: The cross section was measured from subthermal energy to 800 keV, resolving the first two resonances (at 492.7 and 644 keV). A thermal cross section was obtained (1.809±0.045 b) that is lower than the two most recent measurements by slightly more than one standard deviation, but in line with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3 evaluations. A 1/v energy dependence of the cross section was confirmed up to tens of keV neutron energy. The low energy tail of the first resonance at 492.7 keV is lower than suggested by evaluated values, while the overall resonance strength agrees with evaluations.Conclusions: Our measurement has allowed determination of the N14(n,p) cross section over a wide energy range for the first time. We have obtained cross sections with high accuracy (2.5%) from subthermal energy to 800 keV and used these data to calculate the MACS for kT=5 to kT=100 keV.

Abstract

The use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in COVID-19 hypoxemic respiratory failure (h-ARF) under a strict protocol has been described to be highly efficient. However, early prediction of failure is crucial to avoid delayed intubation. Lower PaCO2 values may represent a higher inspiratory effort and, therefore, may help identify patients at greatest risk of CPAP failure. Aim of this study was to observe the PaCO2 trend of COVID-19 patients with h-ARF before and after the initial treatment with helmet-CPAP. A case series study was conducted from November 2020 to March 2021. All adult patients with h-ARF secondary to COVID-19 treated with helmet-CPAP and eligible for endotracheal intubation were observed. Of a total of 54 patients, 32 (59.3%) underwent intubation. Seven (12.9%) patients died in the ETI group, and none in the non-ETI group. Median PaO2/FiO2 ratio on admission was 91mmHg [IQR 68-185] vs. 104mmHg [IQR 85-215] (p=0.137) in the ETI e non-ETI group, respectively. No differences were found either for PaCO2 values on admission (31.5mmHg [IQR 27-35] vs. 29.3mmHg [IQR 27.7-40]) and for PaCO2 variations after 120 minutes of CPAP (+2.38 mmHg ± 3.65 vs. +2.73 mmHg ± 3.96). Changes in PaCO2 values were observed during an initial helmet-CPAP trial, but no differences were found in those undergoing endotracheal intubation as compared to the others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: The $^{14}$N(n,p)$^{14}$C reaction is of interest in neutron capture therapy, where nitrogen-related dose is the main component due to low-energy neutrons, and in astrophysics, where 14N acts as a neutron poison in the s-process. Several discrepancies remain between the existing data obtained in partial energy ranges: thermal energy, keV region and resonance region. Purpose: Measuring the 14N(n,p)14C cross section from thermal to the resonance region in a single measurement for the first time, including characterization of the first resonances, and providing calculations of Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS). Method: Time-of-flight technique. Experimental Area 2 (EAR-2) of the neutron time-of-flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN. $^{10}$B(n,${\alpha}$)$^7$Li and $^{235}$U(n,f) reactions as references. Two detection systems running simultaneously, one on-beam and another off-beam. Description of the resonances with the R-matrix code sammy. Results: The cross section has been measured from sub-thermal energy to 800 keV resolving the two first resonances (at 492.7 and 644 keV). A thermal cross-section (1.809$\pm$0.045 b) lower than the two most recent measurements by slightly more than one standard deviation, but in line with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3 evaluations has been obtained. A 1/v energy dependence of the cross section has been confirmed up to tens of keV neutron energy. The low energy tail of the first resonance at 492.7 keV is lower than suggested by evaluated values, while the overall resonance strength agrees with evaluations. Conclusions: Our measurement has allowed to determine the $^{14}$N(n,p) cross-section over a wide energy range for the first time. We have obtained cross-sections with high accuracy (2.5 %) from sub-thermal energy to 800 keV and used these data to calculate the MACS for kT = 5 to kT = 100 keV., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

The 26Al(n,p)26Mg reaction is the key reaction impacting on the abundances of the cosmic γ-ray emitter 26Al produced in massive stars and impacts on the potential pollution of the early solar system with 26Al by asymptotic giant branch stars. We performed a measurement of the 26Al(n,p)26Mg cross section at the high-flux beam line EAR-2 at the n_TOF facility (CERN). We report resonance strengths for eleven resonances, nine being measured for the first time, while there is only one previous measurement for the other two. Our resonance strengths are significantly lower than the only previous values available. Our cross-section data range to 150 keV neutron energy, which is sufficient for a reliable determination of astrophysical reactivities up to 0.5 GK stellar temperature.

Abstract

The cerium oxide material for this measurement was provided by T. Katabuchi of the Tokyo Institute of Technology., An accurate measurement of the 140Ce(n,g) energy-dependent cross-section was performed at the n_TOF facility at CERN. This cross-section is of great importance because it represents a bottleneck for the s-process nucleosynthesis and determines to a large extent the cerium abundance in stars. The measurement was motivated by the significant difference between the cerium abundance measured in globular clusters and the value predicted by theoretical stellar models. This discrepancy can be ascribed to an overestimation of the 140Ce capture cross-section due to a lack of accurate nuclear data. For this measurement, we used a sample of cerium oxide enriched in 140Ce to 99.4%. The experimental apparatus consisted of four deuterated benzene liquid scintillator detectors, which allowed us to overcome the difficulties present in the previous measurements, thanks to their very low neutron sensitivity. The accurate analysis of the p-wave resonances and the calculation of their average parameters are fundamental to improve the evaluation of the 140Ce Maxwellian-averaged cross-section.

Abstract

Although the 12C(n,p)12B and 12C(n,d)11B reactions are of interest in several fields of basic and applied Nuclear Physics the present knowledge of these two cross-sections is far from being accurate and reliable, with both evaluations and data showing sizable discrepancies. As part of the challenging n_TOF program on (n,cp) nuclear reactions study, the energy differential cross-sections of the 12C(n,p)12B and 12C(n,d)11 B reactions have been measured at CERN from the reaction thresholds up to 30 MeV neutron energy. Both measurements have been recently performed at the long flight-path (185 m) experimental area of the n_TOF facility at CERN using a pure (99.95%) rigid graphite target and two silicon telescopes. In this paper an overview of the experiment is presented together with a few preliminary results.

Abstract

Accurate neutron capture cross section data for minor actinides (MAs) are required to estimate the production and transmutation rates of MAs in light water reactors with a high burnup, critical fast reactors like Gen-IV systems and other innovative reactor systems such as accelerator driven systems (ADS). Capture reactions of 244Cm open the path for the formation of heavier Cm isotopes and of heavier elements such as Bk and Cf. In addition, 244Cm shares nearly 50% of the total actinide decay heat in irradiated reactor fuels with a high burnup, even after three years of cooling. Experimental data for this isotope are very scarce due to the difficulties of providing isotopically enriched samples and because the high intrinsic activity of the samples requires the use of neutron facilities with high instantaneous flux. The only two previous experimental data sets for this neutron capture cross section have been obtained in 1969 using a nuclear explosion and, more recently, at J-PARC in 2010. The neutron capture cross sections have been measured at n_TOF with the same samples that the previous experiments in J-PARC. The samples were measured at n_TOF Experimental Area 2 (EAR-2) with three C6D6 detectors and also in Experimental Area 1 (EAR-1) with the Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC). Preliminary results assessing the quality and limitations of these new experimental datasets are presented for the experiments in both areas. Preliminary yields of both measurements will be compared with evaluated libraries for the first time.
