The Mediterranean Large Elasmobranchs Monitoring (MEDLEM) database contains more than 3,000 records (with more than 4,000 individuals) of large elasmobranch species from 21 different countries around the Mediterranean and Black seas, observed from 1666 to 2017. The principal species included in the archive are the devil ray (1,868 individuals), the basking shark (935 individuals), the blue shark (622 individuals), and the great white shark (342 individuals). In the last decades, other species such as the thresher shark (187 individuals), the shortfin mako (180 individuals), and the spiny butterfly ray (138) were reported with increasing frequency. This was possibly due to increased public awareness on the conservation status of sharks, and the consequent development of new monitoring programs. MEDLEM does not have homogeneous reporting coverage throughout the Mediterranean and Black seas and it should be considered as a database of observed species presence. Scientific monitoring efforts in the south-eastern Mediterranean and Black seas are generally lower than in the northern sectors and the absence of some species in our database does not imply their actual absence in these regions. Marine protected areas (MPAs), when designated correctly and managed well, provide a plethora of conservation benefits for current and future generations (i.e. increased habitat heterogeneity at the seascape level, increased abundance of threatened species and habitats, and maintenance of a full range of genotypes). The distribution pattern of an important target species from the Mediterranean Sea, the parrotfish Sparisoma cretense, was determined in the Plemmirio MPA (Siracuse, Italy) during summer of 2014. Sampling was carried out by means of underwater visual census techniques at two different depth (0/10 m and 10/20 m respectively) at four sampling sites within the reserve boundaries and two sites outside the reserve. Densities and biomasses of S. cretense were significantly higher inside than outside the MPA, however no differences in depth were detected. Our findings confirm that the enforcement of the Plemmirio MPA has a strong positive effect in retaining high numbers of commercially important species, such as S. cretense.

Mustelus is the most species-rich genus of the widespread family Triakidae and represents a significant fraction of the elasmobranch catch in the northern Adriatic Sea where the common (M. mustelus) and blackspotted (M. punctulatus) smooth-hound co-occur. The two species share several morphological and morphometric characters that often lead to uncertainty in the identification and frequent misidentification. In order to provide information useful for their recognition, we performed a morphological and molecular identification of the two species based on seven morphological characters, namely presence/absence of black stripe on the 1st and 2nd dorsal and caudal fins, edge shape of the 1st and 2nd dorsal fins, presence/absence of small black spots on sides, ratio inter-nostril distance/nostril length; and three molecular tests, that is a DNA barcoding analysis based on amplification of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI), a fragment analysis based on hypervariable nuclear markers (microsatellites) and a hybridization assay based on the nuclear codominant marker ITS2. Preliminary results show that some individuals present ambiguous identification characters. Moreover, molecular tests suggest the occurrence of some degree of reproductive interactions between the two species

Introduction/Objectives: Urine chemistry has received growing attention to estimate the diuretic response in dogs with cardiac disease. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of time elapsed between the oral furosemide administration and sample collection on urine chemistry in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) receiving diuretic therapy in American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) stage C. Materials and methods: Seventy-three dogs with MMVD ACVIM stage C and 106 healthy dogs were prospectively included. Dogs with MMVD were divided, based on the time of sampling, in morning group (MMVD-MG) of one to 6 h and an evening group (MMVD-EG) over 6 h from oral furosemide administration. Analogously, healthy dogs sampled between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and between 2 and 7 p.m. were divided in a morning group (H-MG) and an evening group (H-EG), respectively. Urine chemistry, including fractional excretion of electrolytes, was evaluated and compared among groups. Results: Higher excretion of sodium and chloride and higher urine sodium to urine potassium ratio (uNa+:uK+) were detected in MMVD-MG than MMVD-EG (p = 0.021, p = 0.038, and p = 0.016, respectively). Natriuresis, chloriuresis, and uNa+:uK+ were higher in MMVD-MG than H-MG, while no differences were found in the comparison between H-MG and H-EG and between MMVD-EG and H-EG. Conclusions: Urinary electrolyte excretion is significantly increased within 6 h from furosemide administration in MMVD ACVIM stage C dogs. Time of sampling from furosemide administration significantly affects urine chemistry in MMVD dogs and should be considered in clinical practice and the research field.

Despite their wide distribution around the Antarctic continent, the life strategies of the long-fingered icefish Cryodraco antarcticus have been rarely investigated and are not well understood. The aim of this paper was to provide more insights on the demographic characteristics of the population living off the South Shetland Islands, focusing attention on key biological traits such as age and growth and the reproductive cycle. Individual age and reproductive status were assessed through the microstructural analyses of sagittal otoliths and histological analysis of gonads, respectively. The sex-balanced sampled population consisted of juvenile and adult fishes covering a wide size range. Both sexes had positive allometric growth, although males exhibited smaller maximum size and lower body condition than females. Fish longevity was comparable between sexes, being 16 and 18years in males and females, respectively. Applying the von Bertalanffy growth model to length-at-age estimates, males consistently reached lower maximum asymptotic size at a faster rate than females. Based on the gametogenic process, the spawning period was inferred to occur from late summer to early autumn. As commonly found in icefishes, females devoted a great investment to reproduction as gonadosomatic index, egg size, and fecundity. A single female (62cm TL) spawned about 7730 eggs as large as 3–4mm. Considering also the results of previous studies conducted in other areas, this species is characterized by a long-lasting pelagic juvenile phase and adults share similar life strategies across the range of their spatial distribution, suggesting the possibility of a single panmictic circum-Antarctic population.

In particular, elasmobranch populations have been severely impacted, with drastic decreases in abundance and species diversity. Based on their experience, fishers can provide information on marine species occurrence, abundance and behavioural traits on a long-term scale, therefore contributing to research on the poorly studied biological aspects of elusive or rare elasmobranch species. In this study, for the first time, the use of the Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) of fishers was applied to study the behavioural traits of sharks, rays and skates in 12 FAO-GFCM geographical sub-areas (GSAs) of the Mediterranean Sea. This study found both new insight and proved the reliability of LEK-based catch seasonality, reflecting seasonal movements, by comparing LEK-based findings and available literature on five elasmobranch taxa (Mustelus spp., Squalus acanthias, Raja spp., Myliobatis aquila and Scyliorhinus stellaris) in the Adriatic Sea and 7 taxa (Mustelus spp., Raja spp., Prionace glauca, Scyliorhinus canicula, Torpedo spp., Pteroplatytrygon violacea and Isurus oxyrinchus) in the remaining Mediterranean GSAs. In addition, LEK provided new insights into a novel comprehensive representation of species aggregations (Mustelus spp., S. acanthias, M. aquila and S. canicula) in the sampled GSAs and supplied the first descriptions of the size, number of individuals and sex composition of the aggregations. When the limits and shortcomings of LEK-based research are considered, this methodology can be a complementary and cost-effective tool used to study elasmobranchs in either a data-poor scenario or a scenario in which a baseline is missing. Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) occurs in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) as a consequence of left atrial (LA) dilatation, and it affects survival and quality of life. Objectives To evaluate the usefulness of echocardiography in predicting the first occurrence of AF in dogs with MMVD. Animals Forty-four client-owned dogs with MMVD, 22 dogs that developed AF, and 22 dogs that maintained sinus rhythm. Methods Retrospective observational study. Medical databases were reviewed for dogs that developed AF during the year after diagnosis of MMVD (AF group). The last echocardiographic examination obtained while still in sinus rhythm was used to derive selected variables. For each dog with AF, a control dog matched for body weight, class of heart failure, and LA dimension was selected. Echocardiographic results including LA volumes and LA speckle tracking echocardiography (STE)-derived variables were measured. Results Among the tested echocardiographic variables, only LA diameter (P = .03) and left ventricular internal diameter in diastole (P = .03) differed significantly between groups, whereas body weight-indexed variables of cardiac dimension as well as LA volumes and volume-derived functional variables were not different. Among the STE-derived variables, peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS) results differed significantly between the AF group (23.8% ± 8.6%) and the control group (30.5% ± 9.6%; P = .03). A value of PALS ≤28% predicted AF occurrence with sensitivity and specificity of 0.80 and 0.65, respectively. Conclusions and clinical importance Absolute cardiac diameters and LA STE (in particular, PALS) are useful echocardiographic predictors for the development of AF in dogs with MMVD.
