BACKGROUND: A rapid and affordable point-of-care test is a priority for Neisseria gonorrhoeae control. WHO and Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) have a target product profile for a non-molecular N gonorrhoeae rapid point-of-care test that requires a clinical sensitivity of greater than 80% and a specificity over 95% to be considered useful in syndromic management; test turnaround time should be 30 min or under, and the test should cost less than US$3. A novel lateral flow assay (LFA) was developed to achieve that profile. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study we evaluated the performance of the novel N gonorrhoeae lateral flow assay (NG-LFA) at the primary health-care level in South Africa. Male patients with urethral discharge syndrome and female patients with vaginal discharge syndrome were recruited from five primary health-care facilities in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality health district of South Africa. First-void urine specimens and nurse-collected vaginal swabs were tested in-facility with the NG-LFA and Xpert CT/NG PCR assay. N gonorrhoeae multi-antigen sequence typing (NG-MAST) was performed on all LFA positive specimens. FINDINGS: Between March 7, and Sept 19, 2022, we enrolled 200 male patients with urethral discharge and 200 female patients with vaginal discharge. The median age of male patients was 24 years (IQR 21-31 years), and the median age of female patients was 25 years (IQR 21-32 years). In addition, 23 male patients and 12 female patients who presented at the facility with a partner notification slip were enrolled of whom one (4%) and five (42%) were symptomatic, respectively. NG-LFA and Xpert results were available for all participants. In urine specimens, NG-LFA sensitivity was 96·1% (Wilson 95% CI 91·2-98·3; 123 LFA-positive among 128 PCR-positive specimens) and 91·7% in vaginal swab specimens (78·2-97·1; 33 LFA-positive among 36 PCR-positive). The specificity was 97·2% in urine specimens (90·4-99·2; 70 LFA-negative among 72 PCR-negative) and 96·3% in vaginal specimens (92·2-98·3; 158 LFA-negative among 164 PCR-negative). In 156 LFA-positive specimens, NG-MAST showed 93 different sequence types. INTERPRETATION: The novel NG-LFA had excellent clinical sensitivity and specificity in symptomatic male and female patients. The test met the optimal requirement for sensitivity and the minimal requirement for specificity specified in the target product profile. NG-LFA could provide an important tool to optimise clinical management and reduce excess antibiotic use in settings without direct access to laboratory testing. Quantum Physics ,Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
Out-of-equilibrium statistical mechanics is attracting considerable interest due to the recent advances in the control and manipulations of systems at the quantum level. Recently, an interferometric scheme for the detection of the characteristic function of the work distribution following a time-dependent process has been proposed [L. Mazzola {\it et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110} 230602 (2013)]. There, it was demonstrated that the work statistics of a quantum system undergoing a process can be reconstructed by effectively mapping the characteristic function of work on the state of an ancillary qubit. Here, we expand that work in two important directions. We first apply the protocol to an interesting specific physical example consisting of a superconducting qubit dispersively coupled to the field of a microwave resonator, thus enlarging the class of situations for which our scheme would be key in the task highlighted above. We then account for the interaction of the system with an additional one (which might embody an environment), and generalise the protocol accordingly., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX4; submitted to a special issue of IJQI dedicated to the proceedings of IQIS2013

Research on the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of quantum systems has so far produced important statements on the thermodynamics of small systems undergoing quantum mechanical evolutions. Key examples are provided by the Crooks and Jarzynski relations: taking into account fluctuations in non-equilibrium dynamics, such relations connect equilibrium properties of thermodynamical relevance with explicit non-equilibrium features. Although the experimental verification of such fundamental relations in the classical domain has encountered some success, their quantum mechanical version requires the assessment of the statistics of work performed by or onto an evolving quantum system, a step that has so far encountered considerable difficulties in its implementation due to the practical difficulty to perform reliable projective measurements of instantaneous energy states. In this paper, by exploiting a radical change in the characterization of the work distribution at the quantum level, we report the first experimental verification of the quantum Jarzynski identity and the Tasaki-Crooks relation following a quantum process implemented in a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) system. Our experimental approach has enabled the full characterisation of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum spin in a statistically significant way, thus embodying a key step towards the grounding of quantum-systems thermodynamics., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, RevTeX4

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We investigate the conditions under which the trace distance between two different states of a given open system increases in time due to the interaction with an environment, therefore signalling non-Markovianity. We find that the finite-time difference in trace distance is bounded by two sharply defined quantities that are strictly linked to the occurrence of system-environment correlations created throughout their interaction and affecting the subsequent evolution of the system. This allows to shed light on the origin of non-Markovian behaviours in quantum dynamics. We best illustrate our findings by tackling two physically relevant examples: a non-Markovian dephasing mechanism that has been the focus of a recent experimental endeavour and the open-system dynamics experienced by a spin connected to a finite-size quantum spin chain., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We propose an interferometric setting for the ancilla-assisted measurement of the characteristic function of the work distribution following a time-dependent process experienced by a quantum system. We identify how the configuration of the effective interferometer is linked to the symmetries enjoyed by the Hamiltonian ruling the process and provide the explicit form of the operations to implement in order to accomplish our task. We finally discuss two physical settings, based on hybrid opto-/electro-mechanical devices, where the theoretical proposals discussed in our work could find an experimental demonstration., Comment: 6 pages; 2 figures; RevTeX4; See related paper by R. Quantum Physics ,Physics - Optics - Abstract
The simulation of quantum processes is a key goal for the grand programme aiming at grounding quantum technologies as the way to explore complex phenomena that are inaccessible through standard, classical calculators. Some interesting steps have been performed in this direction and this scenario has recently been extended to open quantum evolutions, marking the possibility to investigate important features of the way a quantum system interacts with its environment. Here we demonstrate experimentally the (non-)Markovianity of a process where system and environment are coupled through a simulated transverse Ising model. By engineering the evolution in a fully controlled photonic quantum simulator, we assess and demonstrate the role that system-environment correlations have in the emergence of memory effects., Comment: 4+2 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX4

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We show the connection between a witness that detects dynamical maps with initial system-environment correlations and a witness that detects non-Markovian open quantum systems. Our analysis is based on studying the role that state preparation plays in witnessing violations of contractivity of open quantum system dynamics. Contractivity is a property of some quantum processes where the trace distance of density matrices decrease with time. From this, we show how a witness of initial-correlations is an upper bound to a witness of non-Markovianity. We discuss how this relationship shows further connections between initial system-environment correlations and non-Markovianity at an instance of time in open quantum systems., Comment: 5 pages

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We analyse the role played by system-environment correlations in the emergence of non-Markovian dynamics. By working within the framework developed in Breuer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 210401 (2009), we unveil a fundamental connection between non-Markovian behaviour and dynamics of system-environment correlations. We derive an upper bound to the rate of change of the distinguishability between different states of the system that explicitly depends on the development and establishment of correlations between system and environment. We illustrate our results using a fully solvable spin-chain model, which allows us to gain insight on the mechanisms triggering non-Markovian evolution., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We study quantum correlations in an isotropic Ising ring under the effects of a transverse magnetic field. After characterizing the behavior of two-spin quantum correlations, we extend our analysis to global properties of the ring, using a figure of merit for quantum correlations that shows enough sensitivity to reveal the drastic changes in the properties of the system at criticality. This opens up the possibility to relate statistical properties of quantum many-body systems to suitably tailored measures of quantum correlations that capture features going far beyond standard quantum entanglement., Comment: Published in the International Journal of Quantum Information as part of the special issue devoted to "Quantum Correlations: entanglement and beyond"

We analyse the conditions under which the scheme is successful and relate them to the current experimental state of the art. Quantum Physics - Abstract
We discuss a simple architecture for a quantum Toffoli gate implemented using three trapped ions. The gate, which in principle can be implemented with a single laser-induced operation, is effective under rather general conditions and is strikingly robust (within any experimentally realistic range of values) against dephasing, heating and random fluctuations of the Hamiltonian parameters. We provide a full characterization of the unitary and noise-affected gate using three-qubit quantum process tomography.

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We investigate the dynamical relations among entanglement, mixedness and nonlocality, quantifed by concurrence C, purity P and maximum of Bell function B, respectively, in a system of two qubits in a common structured reservoir. To this aim we introduce the C-P-B parameter space and analyze the time evolution of the point representative of the system state in such a space. The dynamical interplay among entanglement, mixedness and nonlocality strongly depends on the initial state of the system. For a two-excitation Bell state the representative point draws a multi-branch curve in the C-P-B space and we show that a closed relation among these quantifers does not hold. By extending the known relation between C and B for pure states, we give an expression among the three quantifers for mixed states. In this equation we introduce a quantity, vanishing for pure states which has not in general a closed form in terms of C, P and B. Finally we demonstrate that for an initial one-excitation Bell state a closed C-P-B relation instead exists and the system evolves remaining always a maximally entangled mixed state., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
I study the dynamics of the violation of the CHSH inequality for two qubits interacting with a common zero-temperature non-Markovian environment. I demonstrate sudden violation of the inequality for two qubits initially prepared in a factorized state. Due to the strong coupling between the qubits and the reservoir, the dynamics is characterized by numerous sharp revivals. Furthermore I focus on a more realistic physical system in which the spontaneous emission for the qubits is taken into account. When including spontaneous emission even for small decay parameters, revivals in the violation are heavily damped out. If the decay rates exceed a certain threshold, the inequality turns out to be always satisfied., Comment: Accepted by Physica Scripta as part of the Proceedings of CEWQO09

Accurate and user-friendly rapid point-of-care diagnostic tests (POCT) are needed to optimize treatment of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, especially in low-resource settings where syndromic management is the standard of care for sexually transmitted infections. This study aimed to assess the acceptability and usability of a novel lateral flow assay and portable reader for the point-of-care detection of N. gonorrhoeae infection (NG-LFA). This mixed-methods study was conducted as part of a diagnostic performance and usability evaluation of a prototype NG-LFA for detection of N. gonorrhoeae in symptomatic men and women at primary healthcare facilities in the Buffalo City Metro, South Africa. The Standardized System Usability Scale (SUS) was administered, and in-depth interviews were conducted among healthcare professionals (HCPs) and fieldworkers (FWs) at pre-implementation, initial use and 3- and 6-month study implementation to assess user expectations, practical experience, and future implementation considerations for the NG-LFA. Data collection and analysis was guided by the Health Technology Adoption Framework, including new health technology attributes, learnability, satisfaction, and suitability. The framework was adapted to include perceived durability. A total of 21 HCPs and FWs were trained on the NG-LFA use. SUS scores showed good to excellent acceptability ranging from 78.8-90.6 mean scores between HCPs and FWs across study time points. All transcripts were coded using Dedoose and qualitative findings were organized by learnability, satisfaction, suitability, and durability domains. Usability themes are described for each time point. Initial insecurity dissipated and specimen processing dexterity with novel POCT technology was perfected over time especially amongst FWs through practical learning and easy-to-use instructions (learnability). Participants experienced both positive and negative test results, yielding perceived accuracy and minimal testing challenges overall (satisfaction). By 3- and 6-month use, both HCPs and FWs found the NG-LFA convenient to use in primary health care facilities often faced with space constraints and outlined perceived benefits for patients (suitability and durability). Findings show that the NG-LFA device is acceptable and usable even amongst paraprofessionals. High SUS scores and qualitative findings demonstrate high learnability, ease-of-use and suitability that provide valuable information for first-step scale-up requirements at primary healthcare level. Minor prototype adjustments would enhance robustness and durability aspects.

Reviews - Abstract
Accurate serologic tests to detect host antibodies to severe acute respiratory syndrome–related coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) will be critical for the public health response to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Many use cases are envisaged, including complementing molecular methods for diagnosis of active disease and estimating immunity for individuals. At the population level, carefully designed seroepidemiologic studies will aid in the characterization of transmission dynamics and refinement of disease burden estimates and will provide insight into the kinetics of humoral immunity. Yet, despite an explosion in the number and availability of serologic assays to test for antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, most have undergone minimal external validation to date. This hinders assay selection and implementation, as well as interpretation of study results. In addition, critical knowledge gaps remain regarding serologic correlates of protection from infection or disease, and the degree to which these assays cross-react with antibodies against related coronaviruses. This article discusses key use cases for SARS-CoV-2 antibody detection tests and their application to serologic studies, reviews currently available assays, highlights key areas of ongoing research, and proposes potential strategies for test implementation., Accurate serologic tests to detect host antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 will be critical for the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This dissertation aims at understanding which factors may stimulate a transition to an integrated management of municipal solid waste at the national level in Brazil and the local level in Rio de Janeiro. At the national level, it explores how the quantity of recyclable materials recovered by municipalities correlates with its formal structure, such as existing municipal policies, institutional arrangements, administrative variables, and geographical factors. In Rio de Janeiro, this research analyzes the management of solid urban waste as a socio-technical system and aims at investigating niches of innovation that may challenge the mainstream management and drive the waste system to sustainability. Both the national statistical analysis and the local qualitative study reveal, on the one hand, the critical role of environmental education, on the other, the limitation of policy instruments and formal institutions. The statistical analysis demonstrates that having by law the main municipal policy instruments does not guarantee that municipalities perform better in recycling. Moreover, the existence of local policies appeared to be less relevant than the location and size of the municipal population. The policy variables statistically more relevant for explaining the recuperation of recyclable materials turned out to be the environmental education initiatives and climate change actions. After mapping the actors playing a role in the waste governance in Rio de Janeiro, the qualitative study focused on grassroots innovations in waste management in favelas. Environmental education is at the heart of these initiatives that sprout in communities often characterized by violence and lack of public policies. By presenting some of these initiatives, their origins, challenges, survival strategies, and the potential benefits of the interaction with the public and private sectors, this investigation sheds light on the potential of these niches to affect the regime of the waste management of the city. Taken all together, the results suggest that cultivating the environmental awareness of the population and getting their collaboration and engagement in enacting sustainable waste management practices could be at least as critical as passing the appropriate piece of legislation.

- Abstract
The design of a didactic model is proposed to explain political and social concepts based on the contributions from the History of concepts. German (Reinhart Koselleck's Begriffgeschichte) on the temporal strata of the concepts and the different resignifications produced in them over time, as well as those of the History of political ideas developed by the Cambridge School on its contextual uses. In this model, its analysis was considered from the double plane of synchrony and diachrony without losing sight of the pragmatic aspects that the School of Cambridge.

The long trajectory of the concept of citizenship and its gnoseological evolution during the different historical stage has been broadly analyzed in historiography. Since the classical world, in the greek polis, according to the patriarchal model, has existed the citizenship equality only among the male population. Since the medieval age and since the earliest form of liberalisms, ―which were not inclusive towards sex, race, income, property, personal independence and the degree of civilizing―, the access to the politic citizenship has always been problematic, indeed one of the most awkward topic in women’s and gender history. In the nineties the female participation to the citizenship has been promoted by the mobilizations in favor of equal politic. The text is going to be focused on the evolution of the concept of female and feminist citizenship among the political and imaginary construction of citizenship in the occidental context. We’ll wonder to which kind of “citizenships” women are beneficiaries and how has been wrapped in a wrong concept of neutral citizenship, both in the representations whether in political one. How cities answer to the concept of inclusive democracy y to the defiance of the inclusive democracy concept and how cities deal with the vindications for the acknowledgement of women’s right and feminisms.

Starting with a review of the historiographical debate about women and the Russian Revolution, this paper deals with the role that Russian feminists, the ravnopravki, played in the fight for the equal rights of women. Through some of the protagonists of feminist associations, the focus is on the Suffragist movement that was gaining momentum at a key moment for the Russian Empire between 1905 and 1917. Going from one revolution to another, from one Sunday to another (1905-1917), the analysis relies on the existing, though not-so-abundant literature and explores the ways in which women participated in the outbreak of the February Revolution, on 23 February or 8 March 1917, depending on the calendar adopted for International Women’s Day, which was disputed between Bolsheviks and feminists. Finally, consideration is given to another important date in the history of the revolutionary role of the movement of Russian women and its description in historiography, 19 March 1917, when 40,000 women marched down the Nevsky Prospect under the slogan: Equality for women! and obtained universal suffrage from the new Provisional Government.

The main objective of this article is the analysis of the role of Unione Donne Italiane (UDI) and its participation as an agent of anti-Francoism in the last years of the Franco dictatorship and as a witness of a decisive moment in Spanish feminism. The study will be carried out, first of all, based on the documents of the Central Ar-chive of the UDI and the magazine “Noi Donne”. The text focuses on UDI campaigns in support of Spanish women around November 1971, after the Burgos trials, and September 1975, after the last executions of the Franco regime. In a second moment, from December 6 to 8, 1975, in Madrid, in “The Women’s Liberation Days”, the role played by the UDI as an attentive observer and guest actor will be analyzed, coinciding with the proclamation of the International Year of Women for the UN. The role of the UDI, its anti-fascist origin and its “problematic” encounter with feminism explains, in part, also the harmony with the Women’s Democratic Movement in December 1975. Finally, what is claimed is to emphasize the role of Italian Women in strengthening the process of transition to democracy.
