7. Groundwater management of a highly dynamic karst by assessing baseflow and quickflow with a rainfall-discharge model (Dardennes springs, SE France)

Abstract

This paper aims at characterizing the groundwater flow in a highly dynamic karst aquifer using a global modeling approach based on rainfall and spring discharge time series. The Dardennes aquifer (SE France) was studied as it is used for drinking water supply and it also produces karst flash floods that increase the flood hazard downstream in urban areas. Three years of data were available, including a normal rainy year, a wet year and a dry year. Modeling was performed with the new platform KarstMod, a rainfalldischarge model with calibration tools. The Dardennes aquifer model was structured with three interconnected reservoirs: Epikarst, Matrix, and Conduit. Using this modeling approach, we were able to determine the groundwater hydrograph separation of the karst spring discharge, at the annual scale and at the event scale (flood). This gives insight into the low flow (Matrix) available for the drinking water demand and the fast flow (Conduit) that generates flash floods. In such a dynamic aquifer, part of the water budget cannot be accounted for by water resources as fast flow is not stored within the aquifer and is not available for the drinking water demand. The results were compared with the current groundwater management to determine whether the withdrawal is sustainable. Depending on whether it is a wet or a dry year, the proportion of slow flow ranges from 27 to 61% of the total discharge, respectively. During floods in high water periods, the proportion of quickflow increases drastically up to more than 90% of the spring discharge. In the case of a 300 mm/d simulated Mediterranean rainfall event, the mean daily peak value may reach 74m3/s. This discharge can be reduced if the aquifer is previously depleted, which increases the storage within the aquifer. Coupling the geological context and the model results opens up future perspectives for the active management of the karst aquifer.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze spatio-temporal piezometric data and integrate them with geological, geotechnical, and geophysical data to enhance their interpretation. The research focuses on a site located in the Meuse and Haute-Marne departments of France, which has been under investigation since 1994 as part of the surface facilities characterization for the Meuse-Haute-Marne underground laboratory and the CIGEO (Centre Industriel de stockage Géologique) Andra project. These investigations span different spatial and temporal scales. We observed the contribution of water masses associated with external forcing and identified two types of aquifer responses: a rapid response to rainfall events when fractures are well-connected, and minor reactivity at the matrix level. Additionally, we demonstrated that the matrix compartment can be finely characterized through a combined interpretation of piezometric response analysis, fracture analysis, and surface nuclear magnetic resonance (SNMR) soundings. The methodology developed in this project offers an improved understanding of karst piezometry and/or unsaturated zone extension, which is essential for comprehend ding flow dynamics and better constraining the functioning of karst aquifers. Furthermore, this site serves as an ideal workshop for studying flow in fractured media, providing valuable insights into hydrodynamic behavior in complex subsurface environments. Abstract

KarstMod is a collaborative project developed by the French SNO Karst (http://www.sokarst.org/) from the INSU/CNRS, which aims to strengthen knowledge-sharing and promote cross-disciplinary research on karst systems at the national scale. The KarstMod platform provides an adjustable modelling platform for both the simulation of spring discharge at karst outlets and the analysis of the hydrodynamics of the compartments considered in the model. The platform also includes two optional modules: one to simulate snow precipitation and melt based on precipitation and temperature data; the other to calculate potential evapotranspiration from temperature data. The parameter of the modules can be optimized during calibration. KarstMod is a free software that comes with no warranty. You are welcome to redistribute it. Abstract

Geodetic tools monitor the earth’s deformation and gravity field. They are presently sensitive enough to record subtle changes triggered by hydrological processes, thus providing complementary data to standard hydrological measurements. Among these tools, superconducting gravimeter (SG) have proven useful to unravel groundwater redistribution, which significantly alter the gravity field. In the frame of the EquipEx MIGA (Matter wave-laser based Interferometer Gravitation Antenna) project, one SG (iOSG-24) was set up in July 2015 in the Low-noise Underground Laboratory (LSBB) at Rustrel, France, in a gallery located 500 m beneath the surface. In this work, we analyse the underground iOSG-24 gravity time series together with hydro-meteorological data and basic gravity modelling. We find that the gravimeter recorded the redistribution of water in the ground and that most of this redistribution occurs in the unsaturated zone located above the gravimeter. Nevertheless, residuals between our model and the gravity data suggest the occurrence of large lateral fluxes and rapid runoff not considered in our model. We discuss how the setting of a second SG, planned in July 2018, at the surface of the LSBB could help unravelling such hydrological processes.

Abstract

International audience; The National Karst Observation Service: for a long-term monitoring of karst aquifers in the face of new climatic extremes. Karsts constitute heterogeneous aquifers, the result of the dissolution of carbonate rocks. These aquifers are now strategic water resources for different uses. At the same time, they are very sensitive to anthropogenic pressures and ongoing climate change. To answer to this societal concern, the community of karst hydrogeologists proposed to the INSU-CNRS the establishment of a national service for the observation of karstic systems (SNO KARST). Bringing together researchers and teacher-researchers, thisstructure now makes it possible to provide the community with a database including, in particular, temporal monitoring in terms of the quality and quantity of water from several French karstic systems. In addition, the SNO KARST is now a place for scientific exchanges on the topics of measurement and calibration protocols, natural or artificial tracing, signal analysis and processing, hydrological and physicochemical signatures and finally rainfalllevel-discharge modelling. The SNO KARST is also a privileged training place for master and doctoral students. Thus, since 2012, the SNO KARST system has played a structuring role for the research community and the teams that compose it now constitute a dynamic network in terms of scientific exchanges.; Les karsts sont autant d’aquifères hétérogènes, résultat de la dissolution des roches carbonatées. Ces aquifères constituent aujourd’hui des ressources en eau stratégiques pour les différents usages. Ils sont en même temps très sensibles aux pressions anthropiques et aux changements climatiques en cours. Pour répondre à cette préoccupation sociétale, la communauté des hydrogéologues karstiques a proposé à l’INSU-CNRS la mise en place d’un service national d’observation des systèmeskarstiques (SNO KARST). Rassemblant chercheurs et enseignants-chercheurs, cette structure permet aujourd’hui de mettre à la disposition de la communauté une base de données incluant notamment un suivi temporel en termes de qualité et quantité des eaux de plusieurs systèmes karstiques français. De plus, le SNO KARST constitue un lieu d’échanges scientifiques sur les thèmes des protocoles de mesure et de calibration, du traçage naturel ou artificiel, de l’analyse et du traitement du signal, des signatures hydrologiques et physicochimiques et enfin de la modélisation pluie-niveau-débit. MRS geophysical investigations were carried out in fractured and karstified limestones of the Barrois (Meuse). The measurements were reproduced under various hydrological conditions. The main result is the presence of water at very low levels, which has never been quantified before by this method.

Abstract

We propose an updated version of KarstMod, an adjustable platform dedicated to lumped parameter rainfall-discharge modeling of karst aquifers. KarstMod provides a modular, user-friendly modeling environment for educational, research and operational purposes. It also includes numerical tools for time series analysis, model evaluation and sensitivity analysis. The modularity of the platform facilitates common operations related to lumped parameter rainfall-discharge modeling, such as (i) set up and parameter estimation of a relevant model structure, and (ii) evaluation of internal consistency, parameter sensitivity and hydrograph characteristics. The updated version now includes (i) external routines to better consider the input data and their related uncertainties, i.e. evapotranspiration and solid precipitation, (ii) enlargement of multi-objective calibration possibilities, allowing more flexibility in terms of objective functions as well as observation type and (iii) additional tools for model performance evaluation including further performance criteria and tools for model errors representation. Abstract

This paper aims at characterizing the groundwater flow in a highly dynamic karst aquifer using a global modeling approach based on rainfall and spring discharge time series. The Dardennes aquifer (SE France) was studied as it is used for drinking water supply and it also produces karst flash floods that increase the flood hazard downstream in urban areas. Three years of data were available, including a normal rainy year, a wet year and a dry year. Modeling was performed with the new platform KarstMod, a rainfall-discharge model with calibration tools. The Dardennes aquifer model was structured with three interconnected reservoirs: Epikarst, Matrix, and Conduit. Using this modeling approach, we were able to determine the groundwater hydrograph separation of the karst spring discharge, at the annual scale and at the event scale (flood). This gives insight into the low flow (Matrix) available for the drinking water demand and the fast flow (Conduit) that generates flash floods. In such a dynamic aquifer, part of the water budget cannot be accounted for by water resources as fast flow is not stored within the aquifer and is not available for the drinking water demand. The results were compared with the current groundwater management to determine whether the withdrawal is sustainable. Depending on whether it is a wet or a dry year, the proportion of slow flow ranges from 27 to 61% of the total discharge, respectively. During floods in high water periods, the proportion of quickflow increases drastically up to more than 90% of the spring discharge. In the case of a 300 mm/d simulated Mediterranean rainfall event, the mean daily peak value may reach 74 m3/s. This discharge can be reduced if the aquifer is previously depleted, which increases the storage within the aquifer. Coupling the geological context and the model results opens up future perspectives for the active management of the karst aquifer.

40. When best is the enemy of good – critical evaluation of performance criteria in hydrological models.

Abstract

Performance criteria play a key role in the calibration and evaluation of hydrological models and have been extensively developed and studied, but some of the most used criteria still have unknown pitfalls. This study set out to examine counterbalancing errors, which are inherent to the Kling-Gupta Efficiency (KGE) and its variants. A total of nine performance criteria – including the KGE and its variants, as well as the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) and the refined version of the Willmott’s index of agreement (dr) – were analysed using synthetic time series and a real case study. Results showed that, assessing a simulation, the score of the KGE and some of its variants can be increased by concurrent over- and underestimation of discharge. These counterbalancing errors may favour bias and variability parameters, therefore preserving an overall high score of the performance criteria. As bias and variability parameters generally account for 2/3 of the weight in the equation of performance criteria such as the KGE, this can lead to an overall higher criterion score without being associated to an increase in model relevance. We recommend using (i) performance criteria that are not or less prone to counterbalancing errors (NSE, dr, modified KGE, non-parametric KGE, Diagnostic Efficiency) in a multi-criteria framework, and/or (ii) scaling factors in the equation to reduce the influence of relative parameters. Abstract

Hydrological models are widely used to characterise, understand and manage hydrosystems. Data-driven models are of particular interest in karst environments given the complexity and heterogeneity of these systems. There is a multitude of data-driven modelling approaches, which can make it difficult for a manager or researcher to choose. We therefore conducted a comparison of two data-driven modelling approaches: artificial neural networks (ANN) and reservoir models. We investigate five karst systems in the Mediterranean and Alpine regions with different characteristics in terms of climatic conditions, hydrogeological properties and data availability. We compare the results of ANN and reservoir modelling approaches using several performance criteria over different hydrological periods. The results show that both ANN and reservoir models can accurately simulate karst spring discharge, but also that they have different advantages and drawbacks: (i) ANN models are very flexible regarding the format and amount of input data, (ii) reservoir models can provide good results even with short calibration periods, and (iii) ANN models seem robust for reproducing high-flow conditions while reservoir models are superior for reproducing low-flow conditions. However, both modelling approaches struggle to reproduce extreme events (droughts, floods), which is a known problem in hydrological modelling. For research purposes, ANN models have shown to be useful to identify recharge areas and delineate catchment, based on insights into the input data. Abstract

The complexity of karst groundwater flow modelling is reflected by the amount of simulation approaches. The goal of the Karst Modelling Challenge (KMC) is comparing different approaches on one single system using the same data set. Thirteen teams with different computational models for simulating discharge variations at karst springs have applied their respective models on one single data set coming from the Milandre Karst Hydrogeological System (MKHS). The approaches include neural networks, reservoir models, semi-distributed models and fully distributed groundwater models. Four and a half years of hourly or daily meteorological input and hourly discharge data were provided for model calibration. The validation comprised forecasting one year of discharge, without the observed discharge data. The model performance was evaluated using the volume conservation, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and the Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE) applied on the total discharge and individual flow components. As a result, the comparison of model performances is a challenging task due to the differences in the model architecture but also required time steps: some of the models require aggregated daily steps while others could be run using hourly data, which provided some interesting differences depending on how the data was transformed. The use of instantaneous data (e.g. value at noon) produces less bias that averaging hourly data over one day. The transformation of hourly into daily data produces a decrease of Nash and KGE of 0.05 to 0.08 (i.e. from 1 to ~0.93). The resulting simulations (forecasted values for year 2016) produced KGEs ranging between 0.83 and 0.37 (0.83 to - 0.24 for NSE). Although the simulations matched the monitored flows reasonably well, most models struggled to simulate baseflow conditions accurately.
