Abstract

Object of the paper is the Domitian Coast, belonging to the North-West of Campania Region, characterized by contrasting factors. The fertility of the soil and the considerable length of an easily accessible and available coastline are threatened by an indiscriminate exploitation of the ground for anthropogenic uses. The paper analyses the Domitian territory and the issues characterizing this particular area on the basis of three categories of elements. The second part indicates the possible intervention policies set up to redevelop this territory.

Abstract

Recent efforts in the field of surface-enhanced spectroscopies have focused on the paradigm of superchirality, entailing the engineering of the local electromagnetic fields to boost the enantiospecific interaction between light and chiral molecules. In this framework, approaches based on both metallic and dielectric nanostructures have been proposed and have also recently been extended to vibrational circular dichroism in the mid-infrared. In this work, we design, fabricate and characterize arrays of chiral plasmonic slits featuring enhanced chiral fields in the mid-infrared. We exploit collective lattice resonances to further enhance the local intensity and to generate sharp features in the circular dichroism spectra of the platform. Such features are ideally suited to test the superchiral coupling with the vibrational resonances of chiral molecules.

Abstract

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is increasingly gaining interest not only for its applicative potentialities but also for providing an understanding of the excited state properties of chiral molecules. However, applications of CPL are mainly in the field of materials science: special organic molecules and polymers, metal (lanthanide) complexes, and organic dyes are actively and intensely studied. So far natural compounds have not been investigated much. We fill the gap here by measuring circular dichroism (CD) and CPL of lycorine and narciclasine, the most abundant known alkaloid and isocarbostyril from Amaryllidaceae, which exhibit a large spectrum of biological activities and are promising anticancer compounds. Dual fluorescence detection in narciclasine led us to unveil an occurring excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, this mechanism well accounts for the Stokes shift and CPL spectra observed in narciclasine. The same molecule is interesting also as a pH chiroptical switch. Both in absorption and emission, lycorine and narciclasine are also studied computationally via density functional theory (DFT) calculations further shedding light on their properties. Abstract

Natural resources are strategic resources. They are becoming increasingly important in policies combating climate change. Moreover, their protection and enhancement are fundamental for actions of sustainable development. The paper analyses specific types of natural resources (soil, water and energy) and identifies their potential contribution to local development in a perspective of reduced environmental loads. General attention to the three systems of resources is evidenced by the development of research based on the FEW Nexus model which, since the 1970s, has explored the connections existing between them, as well as the development of parallel research lines. The latter can directly impact on regional planning and bring about necessary changes in currently applied plans so as to adapt them to evolving circumstances. A case study of interest is the area of Avellino, one of the inland provinces of Campania. The paper shows that the regional planning tool for the province only partially considers such resources, failing to assign to them any strategic importance. This may be considered a weakness both in regional planning and in land management because it excludes in advance, from analyses and forecasts, resources that can make a major contribution to the sustainable economic development of the province. Abstract

The outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic in early 2020 marked the beginning of anin-depth reflection on the potential implications of the event. This attention has affected,first, the medical-health sector, but has also affected other scientific sectors, withanalyses focused on the scenarios resulting from the global shock caused by the epidemic.The urban planning sector also was involved. The period of the lockdown, ironicallytold by images testifying the sudden emptying of cities, resulted for urban planners asthe opportunity to deepen the analysis on urban systems. The cities, characterized by thepresence of activities, relationships, and information, have turned into a threat helpedby one of their distinctive properties, the concentration, which has backfired against people favouring the transmission of the virus.The attention of scholars has focused above all on identifying potential answers in the urban and territorial field; In addiction it led to think in depth on the distortedset-up assumed over time by the city, and on the actions necessary to modify them, toimprove their overall quality and to avoid that it could turn back into a hostile space. The paper analyses a set of articles published in the first year of the epidemic anddevelops an organized reading of the main themes addressed in the discussions on therelationship between city and epidemic event, connecting them to a more extensive reasoningon the critical state of Italian urban systems and their environmental and socialload.

Le città sono in una fase nella quale due forze contrastanti agiscono su di esse: da un lato il processo di urbanizzazione che procede senza sosta, dall’altro la domanda di reale sostenibilità. Il volume propone una risposta in chiave urbanistica incentrata sulle trasformazioni di ambiti urbani da realizzare mediante strumenti operativi innovativi e ne definisce le caratteristiche principali. L’obiettivo è inserire nelle città azioni innovative che possano provocare un effetto a cascata con ricadute sull’intera struttura urbana. Il saggio si struttura in cinque parti. Nella prima si affronta il tema della urbanizzazione e dello sviluppo dei sistemi urbani, con le relative implicazioni in termini di consumo di risorse e di concentrazione di persone e di funzioni. Nella seconda parte si discutono alcuni modelli che spiegano i meccanismi di diffusione urbana e gli scenari che ne derivano. La terza parte affronta uno dei nodi cardine del rapporto tra sistemi urbani e risorse ambientali, ossia quello dell’energia. La quarta parte analizza alcuni casi studio internazionali per estrapolarne caratteristiche ricorrenti che possono influenzare la pianificazione operativa. Nella quinta parte si approfondiscono i caratteri di questo nuovo tipo di piano.

Abstract

Nowadays, due to the problematic containment of pollutant emissions worldwide, the process of global warming is inevitable. Moreover, in urban environments, due to the strong anthropisation of the spatial context, these phenomena are often accentuated (e.g. urban heat islands). At the same time, the detrimental effects of the aforementioned process are often combined with other pre-existing risks linked to urbanisation in areas of high natural risk (e.g. hydrogeological and volcanic risk). In this context, the first examples of the application of measures for adaptation and mitigation of climate change in urban areas are recorded in formulating the latest generation of urban plans. In this respect, natural-based solutions (NBS) are becoming favoured. These measures have a twofold beneficial effect on the urban reality, i.e., adaptation to the effects of climate change and increased renaturalisation of the urban area, with consequent mitigation of other natural hazards. The present contribution aims to offer an analysis of the main NBSs applicable in an urban context and on different scales (from urban to building) and an applicative example related to their integration into territorial governance tools. Abstract

In this case study, we describe a 21-year-old man with erythropoietic protoporphyria who sought medical attention in April 2022 for diffuse edema and erythema of the hands. These symptoms had been present since childhood and usually occurred soon after sun exposure. The patient's medical history showed that chromosome 18's long arm had partially deleted. We performed a number of tests, including measuring total erythrocyte protoporphyrin levels and utilizing a spectrofluorometer to assess the fluorometric emission peak of plasma porphyrins, based on the patient's medical history and clinical symptoms. Furthermore, a genetic analysis identified an intronic variant on one allele, c.315-48T>C (IVS3- 48T>C), which is categorized as a susceptibility polymorphism, and a complete deletion of the ferrochelatase gene on the other allele. The patient's clinical condition improved following the June 2022 afamelanotide implant procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
