29. Differences in physical and mental health of older adults over the Covid-19 pandemic from face-to-face versus hybrid methods

Abstract

Background \ud As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in data collection methods have been introduced in research to ensure continuity despite physical distancing and lockdown restrictions. Our objective was to compare differences in physical and mental health of older adults participating in falls research using data collection methods pre-covid-19 pandemic (face-to-face) and during the pandemic (hybrid).\ud Methods \ud Individuals aged 60 years and over with at least one fall in the past 12 months, and controls with no history of falls in the past 12 months were recruited. Pre-pandemic, individuals were interviewed face-to-face exclusively, those interviews after the start of the pandemic were conducted virtually with physical assessments conducted face-to-face to minimize physical contact. Cognitive status, physical performance, psychological status, quality of life, physical activity, and social participation were measured.\ud Results\ud Of the 145 participants of similar socio-demographic backgrounds, 69 were interviewed face to-face, while 76 were assessed using a hybrid method. Differences were observed in presence of fall characteristics, with fewer fallers seeing a doctor and more fallers attending the emergency department after the start of the pandemic. After adjustment for baseline differences, participants interviewed using hybrid status had lower depression scores (OR (95%CI)=0.29(0.14-0.61)) and stress scores (OR(95%CI)=0.33(0.15-0.72)), but greater fear of falling (OR(95%CI)=2.16(1.04-4.48)) and reduced social participation (OR(95%CI)=2.64(1.20-5.79)).\ud Conclusion\ud Alterations in data collection methods to overcome pandemic restrictions should take into consideration potential differences in individuals who agree to participate as well as the influence of major life events on the psychological status of participants.

31. Effect of Addition of Palm Oil Biodiesel in Waste Plastic Oil on Diesel Engine Performance, Emission, and Lubricity

Abstract

This research was aimed to examine the diesel engine's performance and emission of secondary fuels (SFs), comprising waste plastic oil (WPO) and palm oil biodiesel (POB), and to analyze their tribological properties. Their compositions were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Five SFs (10-50% POB in WPO) were prepared by mechanical stirring. The results were compared to blank WPO (WPO100) and Malaysian commercial diesel (B10). WPO90 showed the maximum brake power (BP) and brake torque (BT) among the SFs, and their values were 0.52 and 0.59% higher compared to B10, respectively. The increase in POB ratio (20-50%) showed a negligible difference in BP and BT. WPO70 showed the lowest brake-specific fuel consumption among the SFs. The brake thermal efficiency (BTE) increased with POB composition. The maximum reductions in emission of hydrocarbon (HC, 37.21%) and carbon monoxide (CO, 27.10%) were achieved by WPO50 among the SFs. WPO90 showed the maximum reduction in CO2 emission (6.78%). Increasing the POB composition reduced the CO emissions and increased the CO2 emissions. All SFs showed a higher coefficient of friction (COF) than WPO100. WPO50 showed the minimal increase in COF of 2.45%. WPO90 showed the maximum reduction in wear scar diameter (WSD), by 10.34%, compared to B10. Among the secondary contaminated samples, SAE40-WPO90 showed the lowest COF, with 5.98% reduction compared to SAE40-WPO100. However, with increasing POB content in the secondary contaminated samples, the COF increased. The same trend was also observed in their WSD. Overall, WPO90 is the optimal SF with excellent potential for diesel engines.

Abstract

Graphene has attracted much attention from various researchers because of its enhanced mechanical, thermal, and physio-chemical properties. Graphene exhibits high thermal conductivity and stability, less erosion and corrosion than other available nanoparticles. Various existing literature signifies a large portion of the research focuses on stability, heat transfer characteristics and thermal conductivity of Graphene nanofluids. This review article represents a detailed analysis of the preparation techniques, characterization methods stability evaluation, and thermal properties enhancements of Graphene nanofluids. Comparative analysis of the effects of nanoparticle size, volume concentration and temperature on thermal conductivity and viscosity of Graphene nanofluids are reviewed based on heat transfer application. Graphene nanoparticles significantly enhances the thermal conductivity, viscosity, and heat transfer capacity of base fluid. It is noticed that the thermal conductivity of Graphene nanofluids increases with an increase in temperature and volume concentration. Applications of Graphene based nano coolant in automotive radiator, electronic cooling, solar cells and fuel cells are presented. This article can be the rapid reference model with investigational and theoretical analysis for highly critical considerations that impact the thermal performance of graphene based nanofluids in different heat transfer trends. This review also outlined the imminent challenges and future scope of research in Graphene.

Abstract

A polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is defined as a type of fuel cell used to generate voltage and current. A fuel cell produces very small amount of electrical energy about 0.7 volts. So, it is essential to stack the fuel cells in bipolar plate series connection for the production of the large amount of electrical energy to fulfil the requirement. However, it is required to stack them with uniform pressure distribution in order to minimize the chance of BPP, MEA and GDL damage, fuel leakage and contact resistance. The mechanical properties and geometrical attributes of PEMFC stack components were collected with the help of many journal papers and books for the sake of their design and simulation work. Abstract

The current state-of-the-art review on tool condition monitoring for turning of titanium-based superalloys is presented in this paper. Titanium (Ti) superalloys are widely utilised in aerospace industry, automobile industry, petrochemical applications. Ti superalloys are also used in fabrication of biomedical components due to their outstanding combination of mechanical properties and strong corrosion resistance at extreme temperatures. But these superalloys are difficult-to-cut because to their low heat conductivity, low elastic modulus, high strength, and strong chemical resistance. Literature review highlights the drastic reduction in tool life of titanium superalloys at highspeed and feed rates throughout the machining process. The review paper focuses on (i) various reasons to deploy tool condition monitoring; and (ii) study of tool condition monitoring methods based on machine learning techniques to identify the ideal parameters for the prevention of catastrophic tool failure. Abstract

In the present study, a micro combined heat and power (micro-CHP) system using compressed natural gas (CNG) and biogas fuels, was developed. The objective of this research study was to investigate the utilization of nanofluids as a working fluid to improve thermal performance of the micro-CHP system. Three different nanofluids based on the CNT, Al2O3, and SiO2 have been investigated. The nanofluids was used as the circulating fluid to recover the heating power from the micro-CHP system. Three different concentration of nanoparticles (25, 50 and 100 ppm) have been used. The efficiency of separated heat and power (SHP) system was 27.6% while using combined heat and power, the total efficiency increased up to 65.3%. The results showed that by using CNG gas thermal efficiency of micro-CHP improve compared to the biogas. The result of the present study showed that nanofluids enhances the thermal efficiency of the micro-CHP system. By using the Al2O3 nanofluid the efficiency of micro-CHP efficiency is 73%. While by using the SiO2 and CNTs nanofluids the efficiency of micro-CHP efficiency is 70% and 66.3% respectively. So, we can coclude that by using the Al2O3 nanofluid thermal performance of micro-CHP systems improves.

37. The rotor-stator type hydrodynamic cavitation reactor approach for enhanced biodiesel fuel production

Abstract

Today renewable energies such as biodiesel have considerable role in the bio-based economy. Long production time and low efficiency are a number of problems in biodiesel production that is essential to be considered when designing and operating the biodiesel production systems. In this study, using safflower oil in a hydrodynamic cavity reactor, biodiesel fuel was produced in the possible shortest time and maximum efficiency. The effect of reaction time (30, 60 and 90 s), concentration of potassium hydroxide catalyst (0.75%, 1% and 1.25%), alcohol to oil ratio (6, 8 and 10) and rotor-stator distance (1 cm, 2 cm and 3 cm) on the reaction yield were analyzed. The results were analyzed by response surface methodology. Among the independent variables, reaction time was the most important factor on the reaction yield, which had a positive impact on the quality of methyl ester. The optimum values obtained were: 63.88 s reaction time, 0.94% catalyst concentration, 1: 8.36 alcohol to oil molar ratio, 1.53 cm rotor-stator distance, and 89.11% yield. Several properties and compounds of biodiesel obtained were measured and compared with ASTM D6751 (American Society for Testing and Materials) and EN 14214 standard (European Standards). The results showed that most of the features conform to the afore-mentioned standard. Therefore, transesterification of safflower oil with a hydrodynamic cavitation reactor can function as a good alternative to the diesel.

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the thermal behavior of cylindrical modules in a thermal energy storage unit as a combined sensible and latent heat. A thermal energy storage unit is designed, fabricated, and connected to a cold and hot water supply at constant temperatures to monitor the performance of the storage unit. The thermal energy storage unit contains the cylindrical microcapsules containing paraffin waxes as a phase change material which is located inside an insulating cylinder storage tank. Water is used as a heat transfer fluid to transfer heat from a hot water reservoir to the thermal energy storage unit during the phase change material charging process and also during the discharging process water receives heat from the thermal energy storage unit. Charge tests are carried out at the constant temperature. Moreover, the effect of different inlet flow on storage unit performance is investigated. Data were analyzed using Design Expert software and regression analysis which indicated that the increase of charge inlet temperature and charge inlet flow leads to the increase of heat power, thermal performance of thermal energy storage unit, and output variables. In comparison to the heat storage system without phase change material, microcapsules phase change material can improve the heat power of the heat storage system. Also, based on the optimization process, the maximum thermal performance of 96.4% and the maximum heat power level of 1.7 kW can be achieved in the optimized condition of the charging inlet temperature of 75 °C, charging inlet flow of 1.8−4 m3/s, and discharging inlet temperature of 35 °C.

43. Impact of water – biodiesel – diesel nano-emulsion fuel on performance parameters and diesel engine emission

Abstract

© 2020 Elsevier Ltd The use of emulsion fuel in the engine has been reported as an effective solution to reduce the harmful emission. This experimental study examined the effects of nano-emulsion biodiesel fuel on engine efficiency, gas emission parameters and combustion parameters of a single-cylinder air-cooled diesel engine. Nano-emulsion fuel made of 5% waste cooking oil biodiesel and 5% distilled water were used to test the performance of the diesel engine. This fuel was produced using ultrasonic waves by stabilizing 5% by volume tween 80 and spans 80 surfactants in HLB8 (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance). Performance parameters and pollutants emission of a diesel engine using nano-emulsion fuel were compared with emulsion fuel. This test was performed on four different engine loads (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) at different speeds of 1700, 2000, 2300, and 2600 rpm. Power, torque, cylinder pressure levels, and emissions including soot opacity, carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbon (UHC), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOX) were measured. The test results show that diesel engine power and torque using nano-emulsion fuel improved by about 4.84% and 4.65% compared to emulsion fuel, respectively. The use of nano-emulsion fuel significantly decreased CO (~11%), UHCs (~6%), NOx (~9%) and soot opacity (~10%) emission. However, a small rise in CO2 (~7%) emission was observed. The combustion result shows that nano-emulsion fuel creates more cylinder pressure (CP) than emulsion fuel during combustion. The highest CP was recorded at 10° crank angle after the top dead centre with diesel fuel. Finally, nano-emulsion fuel can be a satisfactory alternative to diesel fuel in a diesel engine without having to change the engine.

Abstract

Graphene is a two-dimensional material which composed of carbon atoms that arranged in a honeycomb-structure. Due to its excellent and unique properties, it has drawn an enormous interest among scientists nearly in every field of engineering and science. The aim of this review article is to provide a significant scientific progress of graphene up until now and to evaluate the prospect of its future application. Several key aspects have been reviewed which include the synthesis, functionalization, characterization, properties and its future application. Their thermal, electrical transport, mechanical properties, chemically derived graphene and other aspect also are discussed along with their future potential application.
