The study of university government and its diverse components has a significant relevance today, not only for Chile, but for all Latin American countries. The prime purpose of this work is to know the opinions that rec tors and members of the maximum collegiate bodies (MCC) in Chilean universities have regarding a mechanism that aligns interests such as the "market for directors" of higher education in the country. To achieve the aforementioned objective, a survey with closed questions was applied to seventy seven representatives from twenty-nine Chilean universities. A preliminary, descriptive analysis of the data was made in order to know the opinions of agent and principal. Then, a statistical test was applied to determine if a significant difference existed between the opinions of the actors involved. The theoretical foundations of the work are based on the contractual approach or theory of agency, which implies considering the rectors in the role of "agent" and the members of MCC as "principal". On observing the results in general terms, the closeness of the viewpoints was noted for the majority of variables considered, since only in two of the six variables analyzed were statistically significant differences produced. In any case, it is feasible to affirm in overall terms, that the opinions reinforce the supposition of the theory of agency that the market of directors is a good device for assuring that the agent can align him or herself with the purposes the principal has.
