The Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation between the gas and the star formation rate (SFR) surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm gas}$-$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) is essential to understand star formation processes in galaxies. So far, it has been measured up to z~2.5 in main-sequence galaxies. In this letter, we aim to put constraints at z~4.5 using a sample of four massive main-sequence galaxies observed by ALMA at high resolution. We obtained ~0.3"-resolution [CII] and continuum maps of our objects, which we then converted into gas and obscured SFR surface density maps. In addition, we produced unobscured SFR surface density maps by convolving Hubble ancillary data in the rest-frame UV. We then derived the average $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ in various $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ bins, and estimated the uncertainties using a Monte Carlo sampling. Our galaxy sample follows the KS relation measured in main-sequence galaxies at lower redshift and is slightly lower than predictions from simulations. Our data points probe the high end both in terms of $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$, and gas depletion timescales (285-843 Myr) remain similar to z~2 objects. However, three of our objects are clearly morphologically disturbed, and we could have expected shorter gas depletion timescales (~100 Myr) similar to merger-driven starbursts at lower redshifts. Virtually all known exoplanets reside around stars with $M<2.3~M_\odot$; to clarify if the dearth of planets around more massive stars is real, we launched the direct-imaging B-star Exoplanet Abundance STudy (BEAST) survey targeting B stars ($M>2.4~M_\odot$) in the young (5-20 Myr) Scorpius-Centaurus association (Sco-Cen). Here we present the case of a massive ($M \sim 9~M_\odot$) BEAST target, $\mu^2$ Sco. Based on kinematic information, we found that $\mu^2$ Sco is a member of a small group which we label Eastern Lower Scorpius, refining in turn the precision on stellar parameters. Around this star we identified a robustly detected substellar companion ($14.4\pm 0.8 M_J$) at a projected separation of $290\pm 10$ au, and a probable second object ($18.5\pm 1.5 M_J$) at $21\pm 1$ au. The planet-to-star mass ratios of these objects are similar to that of Jupiter to the Sun, and their irradiation is similar to those of Jupiter and Mercury, respectively. The two companions of $\mu^2$ Sco are naturally added to the giant planet b Cen b recently discovered by BEAST; although slightly more massive than the deuterium burning limit, their properties resemble those of giant planets around less massive stars and they are better reproduced by a formation under a planet-like, rather than a star-like scenario. Irrespective of the (needed) confirmation of the inner companion, $\mu^2$ Sco is the first star that would end its life as a supernova that hosts such a system. The tentative high frequency of BEAST discoveries shows that giant planets or small-mass brown dwarfs can form around B stars. When putting this finding in the context of core accretion and gravitational instability, we conclude that the current modeling of both mechanisms is not able to produce this kind of companion. Observations of hyper-luminous quasars at $z>6$ reveal the rapid growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs $>10^9 \rm M_{\odot}$) whose origin is still difficult to explain. Their progenitors may have formed as remnants of massive, metal free stars (light seeds), via stellar collisions (medium-weight seeds) and/or massive gas clouds direct collapse (heavy seeds). In this work we investigate for the first time the relative role of these three seed populations in the formation of $z>6$ SMBHs within an Eddington-limited gas accretion scenario. To this aim, we implement in our semi-analytical data-constrained model a statistical description of the spatial fluctuations of Lyman-Werner (LW) photo-dissociating radiation and of metal/dust enrichment. This allows us to set the physical conditions for BH seeds formation, exploring their relative birth rate in a highly biased region of the Universe at $z>6$. We find that the inclusion of medium-weight seeds does not qualitatively change the growth history of the first SMBHs: although less massive seeds ($<10^3 \rm M_\odot$) form at a higher rate, the mass growth of a $\sim 10^9 \rm M_\odot$ SMBH at $z<15$ is driven by efficient gas accretion (at a sub-Eddington rate) onto its heavy progenitors ($10^5 \rm M_\odot$). This conclusion holds independently of the critical level of LW radiation and even when medium-weight seeds are allowed to form in higher metallicity galaxies, via the so-called super-competitive accretion scenario. Our study suggests that the genealogy of $z \sim 6$ SMBHs is characterized by a rich variety of BH progenitors, which represent only a small fraction ($< 10 - 20\%$) of all the BHs that seed galaxies at $z > 15$., Comment: (21 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables. The formation of the most massive quasars observed at high redshifts requires extreme inflows of gas down to the length scales of the central compact object. Here, we estimate the maximum inflow rate allowed by gravity down to the surface of supermassive stars, the possible progenitors of these supermassive black holes. We use the continuity equation and the assumption of free-fall to derive maximum allowed inflow rates for various density profiles. We apply our approach to the mass-radius relation of rapidly accreting supermassive stars to estimate an upper limit to the accretion rates allowed during the formation of these objects. We find that the maximum allowed rate $\dot M_{\rm max}$ is given uniquely by the compactness of the accretor. For the compactness of rapidly accreting supermassive stars, $\dot M_{\rm max}$ is related to the stellar mass $M$ by a power-law $\dot M_{\rm max}\propto M^{3/4}$. The rates of atomically cooled halos (0.1 -- 10 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) are allowed as soon as $M\gtrsim1$ M$_\odot$. The largest rates expected in galaxy mergers ($10^4-10^5$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) become accessible once the accretor is supermassive ($M\gtrsim10^4$ M$_\odot$). These results suggest that supermassive stars can accrete up to masses $>10^6$ M$_\odot$ before they collapse via the general-relativistic instability. At such masses, the collapse is expected to lead to the direct formation of a supermassive black hole even within metal-rich gas, resulting in a black hole seed that is significantly heavier than in conventional direct collapse models for atomic cooling halos.

Eridanus II (EriII) is an ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxy (M_V=-7.1) located at a distance close to the Milky Way virial radius. Early shallow color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) indicated that it possibly hosted an intermediate-age or even young stellar population, which is unusual for a galaxy of this mass. In this paper, we present new ACS/HST CMDs reaching the oldest main sequence turnoff with excellent photometric precision, and derive a precise star formation history (SFH) for this galaxy through CMD-fitting. This SFH shows that the bulk of the stellar mass in Eri II formed in an extremely short star formation burst at the earliest possible time. The derived star formation rate profile has a width at half maximum of 500 Myr and reaches a value compatible with null star formation 13 Gyr ago. However, tests with mock stellar populations and with the CMD of the globular cluster M92 indicate that the star formation period could be shorter than 100 Myr. From the quantitative determination of the amount of mass turned into stars in this early star formation burst (~2x10^5 Msun) we infer the number of SNe events and the corresponding energy injected into the interstellar medium. For reasonable estimates of the EriII virial mass and values of the coupling efficiency of the SNe energy, we conclude that EriII could be quenched by SNe feedback alone, thus casting doubts on the need to invoke cosmic reionization as the preferred explanation for the early quenching of old UFD galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, ApJ, accepted Dec 29, 2020

We investigated the formation and evolution of satellite systems in a cold, extended circumplanetary disc around a 10 $M_{\rm{Jupiter}}$ gas giant which was formed by gravitational instability at 50\,AU from its star. The disc parameters were from a 3D global SPH simulation. We used a population synthesis approach, where we placed satellite embryos in this disc, and let them accrete mass, migrate, collide until the gaseous disc is dissipated. In each run we changed the initial dust-to-gas ratio, dispersion- and refilling time-scales within reasonable limits, as well as the number of embryos and their starting locations. We found that most satellites have mass similar to the Galilean ones, but very few can reach a maximum of 3 $M_{\rm{Earth}}$ due to the massive circumplanetary disc. Large moons are often form as far as 0.5 $R_{\rm{disc}}$. The migration rate of satellites are fast, hence during the disc lifetime, an average of 10 $M_{\rm{Earth}}$ worth of moons will be engulfed by the planet, increasing greatly its metallicity. We also investigated the effect of the planet's semi-major axis on the resulting satellite systems by re-scaling our model. This test revealed that for the discs closer to the star, the formed moons are lighter, and a larger amount of satellites are lost into the planet due to the even faster migration. Major mergers of gas-rich galaxies provide promising conditions for the formation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs; $\gtrsim10^5$ M$_\odot$) by direct collapse because they can trigger mass inflows as high as $10^4-10^5$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ on sub-parsec scales. However, the channel of SMBH formation in this case, either dark collapse (direct collapse without prior stellar phase) or supermassive star (SMS; $\gtrsim10^4$ M$_\odot$), remains unknown. Here, we investigate the limit in accretion rate up to which stars can maintain hydrostatic equilibrium. We compute hydrostatic models of SMSs accreting at $1-1000$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, and estimate the departures from equilibrium a posteriori by taking into account the finite speed of sound. We find that stars accreting above the atomic cooling limit ($\gtrsim10$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) can only maintain hydrostatic equilibrium once they are supermassive. In this case, they evolve adiabatically with a hylotropic structure, that is, entropy is locally conserved and scales with the square root of the mass coordinate. Our results imply that stars can only become supermassive by accretion at the rates of atomically cooled haloes ($\sim0.1-10$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$). We report the results of high-resolution subpixel imaging of the hard continuum and Fe K{\alpha} line of the Compton Thick (CT) Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) ESO 428-G014, observed with Chandra ACIS. While the 3-4 keV emission is dominated by an extended component, a single nuclear point source is prominent in the 4-6 keV range. Instead, two peaks of similar intensity, separated by ~36 pc in projection on the plane of the sky are detected in the Fe K{\alpha} emission. The SE knot could be marginally associated with the heavily obscured hard continuum source. We discuss four possible interpretations of the nuclear morphology. (1) Given the bolometric luminosity and likely black hole (BH) mass of ESO 428-G014, we may be imaging two clumps of the CT obscuring torus in the Fe K{\alpha} line. (2) The Fe K{\alpha} knots may be connected with the fluorescent emission from the dusty bicone, or (3) with the light echo of a nuclear outburst. (4) We also explore the less likely possibility that we may be detecting the rare signature of merging nuclei. Considering the large-scale kpc-size extent of the hard continuum and Fe K{\alpha} emission (Papers I and II), we conclude that the AGN in ESO 428-G014 has been active for at least 104 yrs. Satellites of giant planets thought to form in gaseous circumplanetary disks (CPDs) during the late planet-formation phase, but it was unknown so far whether smaller mass planets, such as the ice giants could form such disks, thus moons there. We combined radiative hydrodynamical simulations with satellite population synthesis to investigate the question in the case of Uranus and Neptune. For both ice giants we found that a gaseous CPD is created at the end of their formation. The population synthesis confirmed that Uranian-like, icy, prograde satellite-system could form in these CPDs within a couple of $10^5$ years. This means that Neptune could have a Uranian-like moon-system originally that was wiped away by the capture of Triton. Furthermore, the current moons of Uranus can be reproduced by our model without the need for planet-planet impact to create a debris disk for the moons to grow. These results highlight that even ice giants -- that among the most common mass-category of exoplanets -- can also form satellites, opening a way to a potentially much larger population of exomoons than previously thought., Comment: In press at ApJL

The satellites of Jupiter are thought to form in a circumplanetary disc. Here we address their formation and orbital evolution with a population synthesis approach, by varying the dust-to-gas ratio, the disc dispersal timescale and the dust refilling timescale. The circumplanetary disc initial conditions (density and temperature) are directly drawn from the results of 3D radiative hydrodynamical simulations. The disc evolution is taken into account within the population synthesis. The satellitesimals were assumed to grow via streaming instability. We find that the moons form fast, often within $10^4$ years, due to the short orbital timescales in the circumplanetary disc. They form in sequence, and many are lost into the planet due to fast type I migration, polluting Jupiter's envelope with typically 15 Earth-masses of metals. The last generation of moons can form very late in the evolution of the giant planet, when the disc has already lost more than the 99% of its mass. The late circumplanetary disc is cold enough to sustain water ice, hence not surprisingly the 85% of the moon population has icy composition. The distribution of the satellite-masses is peaking slightly above Galilean masses, up until a few Earth-masses, in a regime which is observable with the current instrumentation around Jupiter-analog exoplanets orbiting sufficiently close to their host stars. We also find that systems with Galilean-like masses occur in 20% of the cases and they are more likely when discs have long dispersion timescales and high dust-to-gas ratios., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures. We present mock observations of forming planets with ALMA. The possible detections of circumplanetary disks (CPDs) were investigated around planets of Saturn, 1, 3, 5, and 10 Jupiter-masses that are placed at 5.2 AU from their star. The radiative, three dimensional hydrodynamic simulations were then post-processed with RADMC3D and the ALMA Observation Simulator. We found that even though the CPDs are too small to be resolved, they are hot due to the accreting planet in the optically thick limit, therefore the best chance to detect them with continuum observations in this case is at the shortest ALMA wavelengths, such as Band 9 (440 microns). Similar fluxes were found in the case of Saturn and Jupiter-mass planets, as for the 10 $\mathrm{M_{Jup}}$ gas-giant, due to temperature weighted optical depth effects: when no deep gap is carved, the planet region is blanketed by the optically thick circumstellar disk leading to a less efficient cooling there. A test was made for a 52 AU orbital separation, showed that optically thin CPDs are also detectable in band 7 but they need longer integration times ($>$5hrs). Comparing the gap profiles of the same simulation at various ALMA bands and the hydro simulation confirmed that they change significantly, first because the gap is wider at longer wavelengths due to decreasing optical depth; second, the beam convolution makes the gap shallower and at least 25% narrower. Circumplanetary disks can be found around forming giant planets, regardless of whether core accretion or gravitational instability built the planet. We carried out state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations of the circumplanetary disks for both formation scenarios, using as similar initial conditions as possible to unveil possible intrinsic differences in the circumplanetary disk mass and temperature between the two formation mechanisms. We found that the circumplanetary disks mass linearly scales with the circumstellar disk mass. Therefore, in an equally massive protoplanetary disk, the circumplanetary disks formed in the disk instability model can be only a factor of eight more massive than their core-accretion counterparts. On the other hand, the bulk circumplanetary disk temperature differs by more than an order of magnitude between the two cases. The subdisks around planets formed by gravitational instability have a characteristic temperature below 100 K, while the core accretion circumplanetary disks are hot, with temperatures even greater than 1000 K when embedded in massive, optically thick protoplanetary disks. We explain how this difference can be understood as the natural result of the different formation mechanisms. We argue that the different temperatures should persist up to the point when a full-fledged gas giant forms via disk instability, hence our result provides a convenient criteria for observations to distinguish between the two main formation scenarios by measuring the bulk temperature in the planet vicinity., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication at MNRAS

The rapid assembly of the massive black holes that power the luminous quasars observed at $z \sim 6-7$ remains a puzzle. Various direct collapse models have been proposed to head-start black hole growth from initial seeds with masses $\sim 10^5\,\rm M_\odot$, which can then reach a billion solar mass while accreting at the Eddington limit. Here we propose an alternative scenario based on radiatively inefficient super-critical accretion of stellar-mass holes embedded in the gaseous circum-nuclear discs (CNDs) expected to exist in the cores of high redshift galaxies. Our sub-pc resolution hydrodynamical simulations show that stellar-mass holes orbiting within the central 100 pc of the CND bind to very high density gas clumps that arise from the fragmentation of the surrounding gas. Owing to the large reservoir of dense cold gas available, a stellar-mass black hole allowed to grow at super-Eddington rates according to the "slim disc" solution can increase its mass by 3 orders of magnitudes within a few million years. These findings are supported by simulations run with two different hydro codes, RAMSES based on the Adaptive Mesh Refinement technique and GIZMO based on a new Lagrangian Godunov-type method, and with similar, but not identical, sub-grid recipes for star formation, supernova feedback, black hole accretion and feedback. The low radiative efficiency of super-critical accretion flows are instrumental to the rapid mass growth of our black holes, as they imply modest radiative heating of the surrounding nuclear environment., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. We analyze the impact of electric field and magnetic field fluctuations in the decoherence of the electronic spin associated with a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond by engineering spin eigenstates protected either against magnetic noise or against electric noise. The competition between these noise sources is analyzed quantitatively by changing their relative strength through modifications of the environment. We discuss how knowledge of the whole evolutionary history of dwarf galaxies, including details on the early star formation events, can provide insight on the origin of the different dwarf galaxy types. We suggest that these types may be imprinted by the early conditions of formation rather than being only the result of a recent morphological transformation driven by environmental effects. We present precise star formation histories of a sample of Local Group dwarf galaxies, derived from colour-magnitude diagrams reaching the oldest main-sequence turnoffs. We argue that these galaxies can be assigned to two basic types: fast dwarfs that started their evolution with a dominant and short star formation event, and slow dwarfs that formed a small fraction of their stars early and have continued forming stars until the present time (or almost). These two different evolutionary paths do not map directly onto the present-day morphology (dwarf spheroidal vs dwarf irregular). Slow and fast dwarfs also differ in their inferred past location relative to the Milky Way and/or M31, which hints that slow dwarfs were generally assembled in lower density environments than fast dwarfs. We propose that the distinction between a fast and slow dwarf galaxy reflects primarily the characteristic density of the environment where they form. We model the dynamics of dwarf early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster when subject to a variety of environmental processes. We focus on how these processes imprint trends in dynamical state (rotational vs. pressure support as measured by the $\lambda^*_{\rm Re/2}$ statistic) with projected distance from the cluster center, and compare these results to observational estimates. We find a large scatter in the gradient of $\lambda^*_{\rm Re/2}$ with projected radius. A statistical analysis shows that models with no environmental effects produce gradients as steep as those observed in none of the 100 cluster realizations we consider, while in a model incorporating tidal stirring by the cluster potential 34% of realizations produce gradients as steep as that observed. Our results suggest that tidal stirring may be the cause of the observed radial dependence of dwarf early-type dynamics in galaxy clusters., Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

We simulate an equal-mass merger of two Milky Way-size galaxy discs with moderate gas fractions at parsec-scale resolution including a new model for radiative cooling and heating in a multi-phase medium, as well as star formation and feedback from supernovae. The two discs initially have a $2.6\times10^6\mathrm{~M_{\odot}}$ supermassive black hole (SMBH) embedded in their centers. As the merger completes and the two galactic cores merge, the SMBHs form a a pair with a separation of a few hundred pc that gradually decays. Due to the stochastic nature of the system immediately following the merger, the orbital plane of the binary is significantly perturbed. Furthermore, owing to the strong starburst the gas from the central region is completely evacuated, requiring $\sim10$~Myr for a nuclear disc to rebuild. Most importantly, the clumpy nature of the interstellar medium has a major impact on the the dynamical evolution of the SMBH pair, which undergo gravitational encounters with massive gas clouds and stochastic torquing by both clouds and spiral modes in the disk. These effects combine to greatly delay the decay of the two SMBHs to separations of a few parsecs by nearly two orders of magnitude, $\sim 10^8$ yr, compared to previous work. In mergers of more gas-rich, clumpier galaxies at high redshift stochastic torques will be even more pronounced and potentially lead to stronger modulation of the orbital decay. In some scenarios for the formation of the Milky Way bulge the stellar population at the edges of the boxy bulge may be younger than those on the minor axis, or close to the Galactic center. So far the only bulge region where deep color-magnitude diagrams have been obtained is indeed along the minor axis. To overcome this limitation, we aim at age-dating the bulge stellar populations far away from the bulge minor axis. Color-magnitude diagrams and luminosity functions have been obtained from deep near-IR VLT/HAWK-I images taken at the two Southern corners of the boxy bulge, i.e., near the opposite edges of the Galactic bar. The foreground disk contamination has been statistically removed using a pure disk field observed with the same instrument and located approximately at similar Galactic latitudes of the two bulge fields, and 30deg in longitude away from the Galactic center. For each bulge field, mean reddening and distance are determined using the position of red clump stars, and the metallicity distribution is derived photometrically using the color distribution of stars in the upper red giant branch. The resulting metallicity distribution function of both fields peaks around [Fe/H] -0.1 dex, with the bulk of the stellar population having a metallicity within the range: -1 dex < [Fe/H] <+0.4 dex, quite similar to that of other inner bulge fields. Like for the inner fields previously explored, the color-magnitude diagrams of the two bar fields are consistent with their stellar population being older than ~10 Gyr, with no obvious evidence for the presence of a younger population., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication on A&A

The last century has seen enormous progress in our understanding of the Universe. We know the life cycles of stars, the structure of galaxies, the remnants of the big bang, and have a general understanding of how the Universe evolved. We have come remarkably far using electromagnetic radiation as our tool for observing the Universe. However, gravity is the engine behind many of the processes in the Universe, and much of its action is dark. Opening a gravitational window on the Universe will let us go further than any alternative. Gravity has its own messenger: Gravitational waves, ripples in the fabric of spacetime. They travel essentially undisturbed and let us peer deep into the formation of the first seed black holes, exploring redshifts as large as z ~ 20, prior to the epoch of cosmic re-ionisation. Exquisite and unprecedented measurements of black hole masses and spins will make it possible to trace the history of black holes across all stages of galaxy evolution, and at the same time constrain any deviation from the Kerr metric of General Relativity. eLISA will be the first ever mission to study the entire Universe with gravitational waves. eLISA is an all-sky monitor and will offer a wide view of a dynamic cosmos using gravitational waves as new and unique messengers to unveil The Gravitational Universe. We report an experimental study of the longitudinal relaxation time ($T_1$) of the electron spin associated with single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects hosted in nanodiamonds (ND). We first show that $T_1$ decreases over three orders of magnitude when the ND size is reduced from 100 to 10 nm owing to the interaction of the NV electron spin with a bath of paramagnetic centers lying on the ND surface. We next tune the magnetic environment by decorating the ND surface with Gd$^{3+}$ ions and observe an efficient $T_{1}$-quenching, which demonstrates magnetic noise sensing with a single electron spin. We estimate a sensitivity down to $\approx 14$ electron spins detected within 10 s, using a single NV defect hosted in a 10-nm-size ND. We present 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of the collapse of clumps formed through gravitational instability in the outer part of a protoplanetary disc. The initial conditions are taken directly from a global disc simulation, and a realistic equation of state is used to follow the clumps as they contract over several orders of magnitude in density, approaching the molecular hydrogen dissociation stage. The effects of clump rotation, asymmetries, and radiative cooling are studied. Rotation provides support against fast collapse, but non-axisymmetric modes develop and efficiently transport angular momentum outward, forming a circumplanetary disc. This transport helps the clump reach the dynamical collapse phase, resulting from molecular hydrogen dissociation, on a thousand-year timescale, which is smaller than timescales predicted by some previous spherical 1D collapse models. Extrapolation to the threshold of the runaway hydrogen dissociation indicates that the collapse timescales can be shorter than inward migration timescales, suggesting that clumps could survive tidal disruption and deliver a proto-gas giant to distances of even a few AU from the central star., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The point-like X-ray source HLX-1 is the brightest known ultraluminous X-ray source and likely the strongest intermediate-mass black hole candidate. HLX-1 is hosted in the S0 galaxy ESO 243-49, but offset with respect to the nucleus, and its optical counterpart was identified with a massive star cluster. In this paper, we study, through N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations, the scenario where ESO 243-49 is undergoing (or just underwent) a minor merger with a gas-rich low-mass late-type galaxy. The simulations suggest that the observed star formation rate (SFR) in ESO 243-49 is a consequence of the interaction and that the companion galaxy already underwent the second pericentre passage. We propose that the counterpart of HLX-1 coincides with the nucleus (and possibly with the nuclear star cluster) of the secondary galaxy. The formation of the massive young stars surrounding SgrA* is still an open question. In this paper, we simulate the infall of a turbulent molecular cloud towards the Galactic Center (GC). We adopt two different cloud masses (4.3x10^4 and 1.3x10^5 solar masses). We run five simulations: the gas is assumed to be isothermal in four runs, whereas radiative cooling is included in the fifth run. In all the simulations, the molecular cloud is tidally disrupted, spirals towards the GC, and forms a small, dense and eccentric disk around SgrA*. With high resolution simulations, we follow the fragmentation of the gaseous disk. Star candidates form in a ring at ~0.1-0.4 pc from the super-massive black hole (SMBH) and have moderately eccentric orbits (~0.2-0.4), in good agreement with the observations. The mass function of star candidates is top-heavy only if the local gas temperature is high (>~100 K) during the star formation and if the parent cloud is sufficiently massive (>~10^5 solar masses). Thus, this study indicates that the infall of a massive molecular cloud is a viable scenario for the formation of massive stars around SgrA*, provided that the gas temperature is kept sufficiently high (>~100 K)., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the formation of RE galaxies (i.e. of collisional ring galaxies with an empty ring), with N-body/SPH simulations. The simulations employ a recipe for star formation (SF) and feedback that has been shown to be crucial to produce realistic galaxies in a cosmological context. We show that RE galaxies can form via off-centre collisions (i.e. with a non-zero impact parameter), even for small inclination angles. The ring can be either a complete ring or an arc, depending on the initial conditions (especially on the impact parameter). In our simulations, the nucleus of the target galaxy is displaced from the dynamical centre of the galaxy and is buried within the ring, as a consequence of the off-centre collision. We find that the nucleus is not vertically displaced from the plane of the ring. We study the kinematics of the ring, finding agreement with the predictions by the analytic theory. The SF history of the simulated galaxies indicates that the interaction enhances the SF rate. We present the first investigation of the Blue Straggler star (BSS) population in two isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies of the Local Group, Cetus and Tucana. Deep HST/ACS photometry allowed us to identify samples of 940 and 1214 candidates, respectively. The analysis of the star formation histories of the two galaxies suggests that both host a population of BSSs. Specifically, if the BSS candidates are interpreted as young main sequence stars, they do not conform to their galaxy's age-metallicity relationship. The analysis of the luminosity function and the radial distributions support this conclusion, and suggest a non-collisional mechanism for the BSS formation, from the evolution of primordial binaries. This scenario is also supported by the results of new dynamical simulations presented here. Both galaxies coincide with the relationship between the BSS frequency and the absolute visual magnitude Mv found by Momany et al (2007). We present an analysis of the neutral hydrogen (HI) properties of a fully cosmological hydrodynamical dwarf galaxy, run with varying simulation parameters. As reported by Governato et al. (2010), the high resolution, high star formation density threshold version of this galaxy is the first simulation to result in the successful reproduction of a (dwarf) spiral galaxy without any associated stellar bulge. We have set out to compare in detail the HI distribution and kinematics of this simulated bulgeless disk with what is observed in a sample of nearby dwarfs. To do so, we extracted the radial gas density profiles, velocity dispersion (e.g., velocity ellipsoid, turbulence), and the power spectrum of structure within the cold interstellar medium from the simulations. The highest resolution dwarf, when using a high density star formation threshold comparable to densities of giant molecular clouds, possesses bulk characteristics consistent with those observed in nature, though the cold gas is not as radially extended as that observed in nearby dwarfs, resulting in somewhat excessive surface densities. The lines-of-sight velocity dispersion radial profiles have values that are in good agreement with observed dwarf galaxies, but due to the fact that only the streaming velocities of particles are tracked, a correction to include the thermal velocities can lead to profiles that are quite flat. The ISM power spectra of the simulations appear to possess more power on smaller spatial scales than that of the SMC. We investigate the evolution of grains composed of an ice shell surrounding an olivine core as they pass through a spiral shock in a protoplanetary disk. We use published three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of massive self-gravitating protoplanetary disks to extract the thermodynamics of spiral shocks in the region between 10 and 20 AU from the central star. As the density wave passes, it heats the grains, causing them to lose their ice shell and resulting in a lowering of the grain opacity. In addition, since grains of different sizes will have slightly different temperatures, there will be a migration of ice from the hotter grains to the cooler ones. The rate of migration depends on the temperature of the background gas, so a grain distribution that is effectively stable for low temperatures, can undergo an irreversible change in opacity if the gas is temporarily heated to above $\sim 150$\,K. We find that the opacity can drop more, and at a significantly faster rate throughout the spiral shocks relative to the prediction of standard dust grains models adopted in hydrodynamical calculations of protoplanetary disks. This would lead to faster gas cooling within spiral arms. We present a detailed study of the dwarf galaxy VV124, recently recognized as a isolated member of the Local Group. We have obtained deep (r=26.5) wide-field g,r photometry of individual stars with the LBT under sub-arcsec seeing conditions. The Color-Magnitude Diagram suggests that the stellar content of the galaxy is dominated by an old, metal-poor population, with a significant metallicity spread. A very clean detection of the RGB tip allows us to derive an accurate distance of D=1.3 +/- 0.1 Mpc. Combining surface photometry with star counts, we are able to trace the surface brightness profile of VV124 out to ~ 5' = 1.9 kpc radius (where mu_r=30 mag/arcsec^2), showing that it is much more extended than previously believed. Moreover, the surface density map reveals the presence of two symmetric flattened wings emanating from the central elongated spheroid and aligned with its major axis, resembling a stellar disk seen nearly edge-on. We also present HI observations obtained with the WSRT, the first ever of this object. A total amount of 10^6 M_sun of HI gas is detected in VV124. Compared to the total luminosity, this gives a value of M_HI/L_V=0.11, which is particularly low for isolated Local Group dwarfs. The spatial distribution of the gas does not correlate with the observed stellar wings. The systemic velocity of the HI in the region superposed to the stellar main body of the galaxy is V_h=-25 km/s. The velocity field shows substructures typical of galaxies of this size but no sign of rotation. We present a detailed study of the star formation history (SFH) of the Tucana dwarf spheroidal galaxy. High quality, deep HST/ACS data, allowed us to obtain the deepest color-magnitude diagram to date, reaching the old main sequence turnoff (F814 ~ 29) with good photometric accuracy. Our analysis, based on three different SFH codes, shows that Tucana is an old and metal-poor stellar system, which experienced a strong initial burst of star formation at a very early epoch (~ 13 Gyr ago) which lasted a maximum of 1 Gyr (sigma value). We are not able to unambiguously answer the question of whether most star formation in Tucana occurred before or after the end of the reionization era, and we analyze alternative scenarios that may explain the transformation of Tucana from a gas-rich galaxy into a dSph. Current measurements of its radial velocity do not preclude that Tucana may have crossed the inner regions of the Local Group once, and so gas stripping by ram pressure and tides due to a close interaction cannot be ruled out. On the other hand, the high star formation rate measured at early times may have injected enough energy into the interstellar medium to blow out a significant fraction of the initial gas content. Gas that is heated but not blown out would also be more easily stripped via ram pressure. We compare the SFH inferred for Tucana with that of Cetus, the other isolated LG dSph galaxy in the LCID sample. We show that the formation time of the bulk of star formation in Cetus is clearly delayed with respect to that of Tucana. This reinforces the conclusion of Monelli et al. (2010) that Cetus formed the vast majority of its stars after the end of the reionization era implying, therefore, that small dwarf galaxies are not necessarily strongly affected by reionization, in agreement with many state-of-the-art cosmological models. The physical mechanisms and timescales that determine the morphological signatures and the quenching of star formation of typical (~L*) elliptical galaxies are not well understood. To address this issue, we have simulated the formation of a group of galaxies with sufficient resolution to track the evolution of gas and stars inside about a dozen galaxy group members over cosmic history. Galaxy groups, which harbor many elliptical galaxies in the universe, are a particularly promising environment to investigate morphological transformation and star formation quenching, due to their high galaxy density, their relatively low velocity dispersion, and the presence of a hot intragroup medium. Our simulation reproduces galaxies with different Hubble morphologies and, consequently, enables us to study when and where the morphological transformation of galaxies takes place. The simulation does not include feedback from active galactic nuclei showing that it is not an essential ingredient for producing quiescent, red elliptical galaxies in galaxy groups. Ellipticals form, as suspected, through galaxy mergers. In contrast with what has often been speculated, however, these mergers occur at z>1, before the merging progenitors enter the virial radius of the group and before the group is fully assembled. The simulation also shows that quenching of star formation in the still star-forming elliptical galaxies lags behind their morphological transformation, but, once started, is taking less than a billion years to complete. As long envisaged the star formation quenching happens as the galaxies approach and enter the finally assembled group, due to quenching of gas accretion and (to a lesser degree) stripping. Massive young clusters (YCs) are expected to host intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) born via runaway collapse. These IMBHs are likely in binaries and can undergo mergers with other compact objects, such as stellar mass black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs). We derive the frequency of such mergers starting from information available in the Local Universe. Mergers of IMBH-NS and IMBH-BH binaries are sources of gravitational waves (GWs), which might allow us to reveal the presence of IMBHs. We thus examine their detectability by current and future GW observatories, both ground- and space-based. In particular, as representative of different classes of instruments we consider Initial and Advanced LIGO, the Einstein gravitational-wave Telescope (ET) and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We find that IMBH mergers are unlikely to be detected with instruments operating at the current sensitivity (Initial LIGO). LISA detections are disfavored by the mass range of IMBH-NS and IMBH-BH binaries: less than one event per year is expected to be observed by such instrument. Advanced LIGO is expected to observe a few merger events involving IMBH binaries in a 1-year long observation. Advanced LIGO is particularly suited for mergers of relatively light IMBHs (~100 Msun) with stellar mass BHs. The number of mergers detectable with ET is much larger: tens (hundreds) of IMBH-NS (IMBH-BH) mergers might be observed per year, according to the runaway collapse scenario for the formation of IMBHs. We present high-resolution 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of the formation and evolution of protostellar discs in a turbulent molecular cloud. Using a piecewise polytropic equation of state, we perform two sets of simulations. In both cases we find that isolated systems undergo a fundamentally different evolution than members of binary or multiple systems. When formed, isolated systems must accrete mass and increase their specific angular momentum, leading to the formation of massive, extended discs, which undergo strong gravitational instabilities and are susceptible to disc fragmentation. Fragments with initial masses of 5.5 M_jup, 7.4 M_jup and 12 M_jup are produced in our simulations. In binaries and small clusters, we observe that due to competition for material from the parent core, members do not accrete significant amounts of high specific angular momentum gas relative to isolated systems. We find that discs in multiple systems are strongly self-gravitating but that they are stable against fragmentation due to disc truncation and mass profile steeping by tides, accretion of high specific angular momentum gas by other members, and angular momentum being redirected into members' orbits. We use deep HST/ACS observations to calculate the star formation history (SFH) of the Cetus dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy. Our photometry reaches below the oldest main sequence turn-offs, which allows us to estimate the age and duration of the main episode of star formation in Cetus. This is well approximated by a single episode that peaked roughly 12+/-0.5 Gyr ago and lasted no longer than about 1.9+/-0.5 Gyr (FWHM). Our solution also suggests that essentially no stars formed in Cetus during the past 8 Gyrs. This makes Cetus' SFH comparable to that of the oldest Milky Way dSphs. Given the current isolation of Cetus in the outer fringes of the Local Group, this implies that Cetus is a clear outlier in the morphology-Galactocentric distance relation that holds for the majority of Milky Way dwarf satellites. Our results also show that Cetus continued forming stars through z ~ 1, long after the Universe was reionized, and that there is no clear signature of the epoch of reionization in Cetus' SFH. We discuss briefly the implications of these results for dwarf galaxy evolution models. Finally, we present a comprehensive account of the data reduction and analysis strategy adopted for all galaxies targeted by the LCID (Local Cosmology from Isolated Dwarfs) project. We perform a suite of high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations to investigate the orbital decay and mass evolution of massive black hole (MBH) pairs down to scales of ~30 pc during minor mergers of disk galaxies. Our simulation set includes star formation and accretion onto the MBHs, as well as feedback from both processes. We consider 1:10 merger events starting at z~3, with MBH masses in the sensitivity window of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, and we follow the coupling between the merger dynamics and the evolution of the MBH mass ratio until the satellite galaxy is tidally disrupted. While the more massive MBH accretes in most cases as if the galaxy were in isolation, the satellite MBH may undergo distinct episodes of enhanced accretion, owing to strong tidal torques acting on its host galaxy and to orbital circularization inside the disk of the primary galaxy. As a consequence, the initial 1:10 mass ratio of the MBHs changes by the time the satellite is disrupted. Depending on the initial fraction of cold gas in the galactic disks and the geometry of the encounter, the mass ratios of the MBH pairs at the time of satellite disruption can stay unchanged or become as large as 1:2. Remarkably, the efficiency of MBH orbital decay correlates with the final mass ratio of the pair itself: MBH pairs that increase significantly their mass ratio are also expected to inspiral more promptly down to nuclear-scale separations. These findings indicate that the mass ratios of MBH pairs in galactic nuclei do not necessarily trace the mass ratios of their merging host galaxies, but are determined by the complex interplay between gas accretion and merger dynamics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, replaced to match accepted version on ApJ
