Hybrid constructed wetlands composed by vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) followed by horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HFCW) are a wastewater treatment technology employed worldwide. However, there are few studies of their application in Brazil. Treatment performance is not achieved directly after the start of operation and may change according to external conditions over time. This paper evaluated a VFCW–HFCW hybrid system applied to treat urban wastewater in southern Brazil during the first 70 operational weeks. The system was operated with cycles of rest and feed periods. The results point to the first 10 weeks of operation as a transitioning period, especially for VFCW, after which chemical oxygen demand (COD) (from 77% to 90%) and total suspended solids (TSS) (from 90% to 100%) removal performances stabilized and reached their peak rates. Factors such as rainfall precipitation, macrophytes' adaptation, and time of operation affected pollutants' removal. Regardless of the fluctuations throughout the period, the hybrid system presented resilience by generating excellent average removal rates. It showed a mean removal efficiency of 99% for TSS, 98% for COD, 69% for total nitrogen (TN), 91% for NH4+-N, and 96% for P-PO43−. Moreover, the effluent was always suitable to be discharged into the environment according to Brazilian national and state regulations.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the organic loading rate (OLR) and the hydraulic regime on the nitrifying and denitrifying bacterial community present in the bed media of vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) employed as urban wastewater treatment solution. Two microcosms filled with sand (d10 = 0.3 mm and uniformity coefficient = 6.2) simulated the vertical profile of VFCW and were monitored for 360 days. Microcosm 1 was operated with a constant OLR of 41 g COD m−2 d−1 and with an average hydraulic loading rate (HLR) of 72 mm d−1. Microcosm 2 was operated with a constant HLR of 170.5 mm d−1 and with an average OLR of 104 g COD m−2 d−1. After 180 days feeding weekly, an intermittent regime with 30 days of feeding followed by 30 days of rest period was adopted. In total, 7 periods were monitored (4 periods of feeding and 3 periods of rest). At the end of each period, the total, nitrifying and denitrifying bacterial communities were characterized using FISH technique. At the end of the experiment, genome sequencing of the bacterial community was performed at the surface and bottom of the two microcosms. The OLR and the HLR significantly affected microcosms’ performance and bacterial community structure. Rest periods did not affect Bacteria domain abundance. However, they presented an influence on nitrifying bacteria abundance. Ammonia oxidizing bacteria abundance (Nitrososmas sp and AOB β-proteobacteria) was higher in microcosm 1 in feeding (15%) and rest (3%), periods when compared to microcosm 2 (9% and 1% for feeding and rest periods). The same dynamics were observed for nitrite oxidizing bacteria (Nitrobacter sp, Nitrospirae and Nistrospina gracilis), with relative abundance of 18% and 10% for microcosm 1, and 8% and 4% for microcosm 2, in feeding and rest periods, respectively. Differently from nitrifying bacteria dynamics, a higher abundance of denitrifying bacteria (Pseudomonas spp.) was observed in rest periods (12% for microscom 1 and 18% for microcosm 2) than in feeding periods (2% for microcosm 1 and 10% for microcosm 2). The identification of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria in both microcosms can indicate the process of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification.

O objetivo deste artigo foi avaliar a hidrodinâmica e o desempenho de um wetland construido de fluxo horizontal (WCH) componente de um sistema hibrido, empregado no tratamento de esgoto sanitario e localizado em Florianopolis/SC, sul do Brasil. O sistema hibrido (composto por um modulo wetland construido de fluxo vertical descendente – WCVD, seguido do WCH) operou sob uma carga orgânica media afluente de 40 g DQO m -2 .d -1 , sendo que o modulo WCH operou sob uma carga orgânica media de 4.4 g DQO m - ².d -1 (considerando-se a area superficial), alcancando remocoes em termos de cargas de 1.5 g DQO m -2 .d -1 ou 71% de eficiencia, 0.3 g SST m -2 .d -1 ou 73% de eficiencia, 0.3 g P-PO 4 3- m - ².d -1 ou 91% de eficiencia, 1 g N-NH 4 + m -2 .d -1 ou 81% de eficiencia e 1.6 g NT m -2 .d -1 ou 70% de eficiencia. A evapotranspiracao media obtida no WCH foi de 2.2 mm.d -1 ou 8% da taxa de aplicacao hidraulica (TAH). Avaliou-se o comportamento hidrodinâmico por meio de 3 testes com tracador salino NaCl, sob diferentes condicoes meteorologicas. Os indicadores hidrodinâmicos revelaram que o WCH, durante o periodo de menor contribuicao pluviometrica (11 mm), apresentou comportamento proximo ao fluxo pistao, enquanto que sob maior contribuicao pluviometrica (57 mm), o reator nao apresentou comportamento definido, resultando em um maior numero de dispersao e menor recuperacao de massa do tracador (63.7%). O tempo de detencao hidraulico medio (TDH m ) foi de 6 dias. Avaliou-se os modelos hidraulicos cineticos de fluxo pistao (FP) e fluxo pistao com concentracao residual (FP k-C*), e o que melhor representou o decaimento de DQO foi o FP k-C*, com coeficiente de decaimento (k d ) de 0.33 d -1 .

Este artigo apresenta o desempenho de remoção de poluentes promovido por um wetland construído vertical de fundo saturado (WCV-FS), empregado no tratamento de esgoto sanitário, ao longo de 21 meses de operação e monitoramento. O WCV-FS (7,5 m² de área superficial) possui uma profundidade de 75 cm, com os últimos 40 cm saturados com esgoto, areia como material filtrante e plantado com Typha domingensis. A alimentação foi realizada de forma intermitente (4 pulsos d-1), com um regime hidráulico baseado em ciclos de alimentação e repouso de 3,5 dias na semana. Durante o estudo (junho/15 - março/17), o WCV-FS operou com uma carga orgânica média de 41 g DQO m-2 d-1 e taxa hidráulica de 80 mm d-1. O WCV-FS apresentou elevada remoção de matéria orgânica carbonácea em termos de DQO (91 %) e sólidos suspensos (96 %), apresentando um desempenho de tratamento similar aos sistemas híbridos de wetlands avaliados no estado de Santa Catarina. Em relação ao nitrogênio total, a remoção média foi de 45 %, podendo estar associada com os processos de nitrificação e desnitrificação sequencial na mesma unidade de tratamento.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho de remoção de poluentes de um sistema híbrido, composto por um wetland construído de fluxo subsuperficial vertical descendente (WCVD) seguido por um wetland construído de fluxo subsuperficial horizontal (WCH), empregado no tratamento de esgoto sanitário. A partir das eficiências registradas ao longo das primeiras 70 semanas de operação, avaliou-se a aptidão de lançamento do efluente tratado conforme normativas legais de âmbito nacional e estadual. O sistema híbrido apresentou elevada remoção de DQO, SST, N-NH4+ e P-PO43-, na ordem superior a 90%, enquanto que a remoção de NT limitou-se a aproximadamente 69%. A remoção de NT foi incompleta devido à limitada capacidade do WCH em remover N-NO3- afluente, gerando um efluente com teor médio de 19,4 ± 10 mg N-NO3- L-1. Contudo, o efluente tratado sempre se mostrou apto para lançamento conforme a resolução CONAMA 430/2011 e a Lei Estadual de Santa Catarina no 14.675/2009, enquanto que para a resolução CONAMA 357/2005 estudos caso a caso devem ser realizados. Para corpos hídricos classes 1 a 3, vazões Q (7,10) variando de 0,5 a 13 L s-1 são necessárias para não se infligir acréscimos significativos (Δ ≤ 0,01) nas concentrações dos diferentes parâmetros analisados na zona de mistura.
