- Abstract
International trade in plants and climate change are two of the main factors causing damaging tree pests (i.e. fungi and insects) to spread into new areas. To mitigate these risks, a large-scale assessment of tree-associated fungi and insects is needed. We present records of endophytic fungi and insects in twigs of 17 angiosperm and gymnosperm genera, from 51 locations in 32 countries worldwide. Endophytic fungi were characterized by high-throughput sequencing of 352 samples from 145 tree species in 28 countries. Insects were reared from 227 samples of 109 tree species in 18 countries and sorted into taxonomic orders and feeding guilds. Herbivorous insects were grouped into morphospecies and were identified using molecular and morphological approaches. This dataset reveals the diversity of tree-associated taxa, as it contains 12,721 fungal Amplicon Sequence Variants and 208 herbivorous insect morphospecies, sampled across broad geographic and climatic gradients and for many tree species. This dataset will facilitate applied and fundamental studies on the distribution of fungal endophytes and insects in trees.

- Abstract
Procedures, appointments and outcomes of the Fungal Nomenclature Session (FNS) of the 11th International Mycological Congress (IMC11) are summarized, including the composition of the Fungal Nomenclature Bureau and the Nominating Committee of the IMC. Nearly 150 mycologists attended the FNS, at which formal proposals to amend Chapter F of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN) were debated. The 18 proposals considered included 10 “from the floor”. Four proposals were withdrawn, two were sent to the Editorial Committee, five were sent to two Special-purpose Committees, four were rejected, and three were accepted (concerning: using the identifier in place of the author citation; mis-citation of identifiers; and indication of sanctioning). Proposals to amend Division III of the ICN were deemed out of scope of the FNS because they did not relate to Chapter F. The two Special-purpose Committees authorized were: “DNA Sequences as Types for Fungi” and “Names of Fungi with the Same Epithet”. Appointments made by the FNS included the Secretary of the Fungal Nomenclature Bureau for IMC12, and officers and members of the Permanent Nomenclature Committee for Fungi. Decisions and appointments of the FNS were ratified in a resolution accepted by the plenary session of the Congress.

- Abstract
The kingdom Fungi is one of the most diverse groups of organisms on Earth, and they are integral ecosystem agents that govern soil carbon cycling, plant nutrition, and pathology. Fungi are widely distributed in all terrestrial ecosystems, but the distribution of species, phyla, and functional groups has been poorly documented. On the basis of 365 global soil samples from natural ecosystems, we determined the main drivers and biogeographic patterns of fungal diversity and community composition. Rationale We identified soil-inhabiting fungi using 454 Life Sciences (Branford, CN) pyrosequencing and through comparison against taxonomically and functionally annotated sequence databases. Multiple regression models were used to disentangle the roles of climatic, spatial, edaphic, and floristic parameters on fungal diversity and community composition. Structural equation models were used to determine the direct and indirect effects of climate on fungal diversity, soil chemistry, and vegetation. We also examined whether fungal biogeographic patterns matched paradigms derived from plants and animals—namely, that species’ latitudinal ranges increase toward the poles (Rapoport’s rule) and diversity increases toward the equator. Last, we sought group-specific global biogeographic links among major biogeographic regions and biomes using a network approach and area-based clustering. Results Metabarcoding analysis of global soils revealed fungal richness estimates approaching the number of species recorded to date. Distance from equator and mean annual precipitation had the strongest effects on richness of fungi, including most fungal taxonomic and functional groups. Diversity of most fungal groups peaked in tropical ecosystems, but ectomycorrhizal fungi and several fungal classes were most diverse in temperate or boreal ecosystems, and many fungal groups exhibited distinct preferences for specific edaphic conditions (such as pH, calcium, or phosphorus). Consistent with Rapoport’s

- Abstract
Hypogeous sequestrate (truffle-like) fungi rely primarily on consumption by mammals for dispersal. Most truffle-like fungi are ectomycorrhizal, making mammalian dispersers essential to the maintenance of plant-fungal relationships, soil fungal diversity and ecosystem functioning. Australia has the highest current global rate of mammalian extinctions, including important fungal specialists within the family Potoroidae. Knowing the relative importance of different mammal species as dispersers helps us to understand how this loss in mammal diversity could affect plant-fungi interactions and fungal diversity. Despite detecting a sampling bias in the literature, our meta-analysis confirms that mammals with fungal specialist diets contribute disproportionally more to the potential dispersal of fungi than other mammals within Australia. Three mammal species with generalist diets also consumed fungi at comparable rates to fungal specialist species and, importantly, persist in many areas where fungal specialists are now absent. These results highlight the significance of mammals, particularly fungal specialists, for maintaining diverse ectomycorrhizal fungal communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: In the treatment of epilepsy, as in all areas of drug therapy, generic formulations are becoming more important as pressure to reduce drug costs increases. In clinical practice, the interchangeability of reference and generic preparations is often assumed. However, in individual patients with a narrow therapeutic range, switching to another formulation of an antiepileptic agent with low water solubility and nonlinear pharmacokinetics may lead to breakthrough seizures or toxicity. The purpose of this study was to examine the bioequivalence and clinical effects after switch of equal daily dosages of two commercially available sustained-release preparations of carbamazepine (CBZ). Patients and Study Design: This was a nonblinded intra-individual trial in 14 patients aged 18 to 52 years with focal epilepsy who had been receiving monotherapy with the reference preparation of sustained-release carbamazepine (mean dosage 1985 mg/day given twice daily) for at least 35 days. After a minimum of 3 further days, the reference preparation (denoted CBZ-R) was immediately replaced by an identical dosage of the generic preparation (denoted CBZ-G). Under steady-state conditions, for each preparation we determined area under the serum concentration-time curve (AUC), maximum serum concentration (C), minimum serum concentration (C) and peak-trough fluctuation (PTF) of carbamazepine and carbamazepine 10,11-epoxide. Results: One patient dropped out because of intolerable adverse effects with CBZ-G. For carbamazepine, the data for the remaining 13 patients, expressed as CBZ-G/CBZ-R, were: AUC 111.5% [90% confidence interval (CI) 105.6-117.8%]; PTF 90.9% (90% CI 73.4-112.8%); C 110.1% (90% CI 100.4-117.0%). These data indicate a higher bioavailability for CBZ-G. For carbamazepine 10,11-epoxide, about 20% higher average concentrations were measured with CBZ-G. Applying the usual inclusion rule [90% CI within the range 80 to 125% (AUC) or 70 to 143% (PTF and C) of the reference preparation], the two formulations can be considered as bioequivalent. In contrast, we observed marked adverse effects, such as dizziness, nausea, ataxia, diplopia and nystagmus, in eight of the remaining 13 patients after switching to CBZ-G. Conclusions: Proof of bioequivalence between reference and generic preparations of antiepileptic drugs does not mean that they are freely interchangeable. Generic formulations with proven bioequivalence to branded preparations can be used, for example, at the beginning of treatment or in poorly controlled patients with serum concentrations in the mid range. The results demonstrate that the usual rules for bioequivalence and the range of acceptability for preparations of carbamazepine are problematic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
