Search

The discovery of the electromagnetic counterpart to the binary neutron star merger GW170817 has opened the era of gravitational-wave multi-messenger astronomy. Rapid identification of the optical/infrared kilonova enabled a precise localization of the source, which paved the way to deep multi-wavelength follow-up and its myriad of related science results. Fully exploiting this new territory of exploration requires the acquisition of electromagnetic data from samples of neutron star mergers and other gravitational wave sources. After GW170817, the frontier is now to map the diversity of kilonova properties and provide more stringent constraints on the Hubble constant, and enable new tests of fundamental physics. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) can play a key role in this field in the 2020s, when an improved network of gravitational-wave detectors is expected to reach a sensitivity that will enable the discovery of a high rate of merger events involving neutron stars (about tens per year) out to distances of several hundred Mpc. We design comprehensive target-of-opportunity observing strategies for follow-up of gravitational-wave triggers that will make the Rubin Observatory the premier instrument for discovery and early characterization of neutron star and other compact object mergers, and yet unknown classes of gravitational wave events., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1812.04051

The blossoming field of joint gravitational wave and electromagnetic (GW-EM) astronomy is one of the most promising in astronomy. The first, and only, joint GW-EM event GW170817 provided remarkable science returns that still continue to this day. Continued growth in this field requires increasing the sample size of joint GW-EM detections. In this white paper, we outline the case for using some percentage of LSST survey time for dedicated target-of-opportunity follow up of GW triggers in order to efficiently and rapidly identify optical counterparts. We show that the timeline for the LSST science survey is well matched to the planned improvements to ground based GW detectors in the next decade. LSST will become particularly crucial in the later half of the 2020s as more and more distant GW sources are detected. Accurate forward modeling of weak lensing (WL) observables from cosmological parameters is necessary for upcoming galaxy surveys. Because WL probes structures in the non-linear regime, analytical forward modeling is very challenging, if not impossible. Numerical simulations of WL features rely on ray-tracing through the outputs of $N$-body simulations, which requires knowledge of the gravitational potential and accurate solvers for light ray trajectories. A less accurate procedure, based on the Born approximation, only requires knowledge of the density field, and can be implemented more efficiently and at a lower computational cost. In this work, we use simulations to show that deviations of the Born-approximated convergence power spectrum, skewness and kurtosis from their fully ray--traced counterparts are consistent with the smallest non-trivial $O(\Phi^3)$ post-Born corrections (so-called geodesic and lens-lens terms). Our results imply a cancellation among the larger $O(\Phi^4)$ (and higher order) terms, consistent with previous analytic work. We also find that cosmological parameter bias induced by the Born approximated power spectrum is negligible even for an LSST-like survey, once galaxy shape noise is considered. When considering higher order statistics such as the $\kappa$ skewness and kurtosis, however, we find significant bias of up to 2.5$\sigma$. Using the LensTools software suite, we show that the Born approximation saves a factor of 4 in computing time with respect to the full ray-tracing in reconstructing the convergence., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, PRD accepted

Weak gravitational lensing is becoming a mature technique for constraining cosmological parameters, and future surveys will be able to constrain the dark energy equation of state $w$. When analyzing galaxy surveys, redshift information has proven to be a valuable addition to angular shear correlations. We forecast parameter constraints on the triplet $(\Omega_m,w,\sigma_8)$ for an LSST-like photometric galaxy survey, using tomography of the shear-shear power spectrum, convergence peak counts and higher convergence moments. We find that redshift tomography with the power spectrum reduces the area of the $1\sigma$ confidence interval in $(\Omega_m,w)$ space by a factor of 8 with respect to the case of the single highest redshift bin. We also find that adding non-Gaussian information from the peak counts and higher-order moments of the convergence field and its spatial derivatives further reduces the constrained area in $(\Omega_m,w)$ by a factor of 3 and 4, respectively. When we add cosmic microwave background parameter priors from Planck to our analysis, tomography improves power spectrum constraints by a factor of 3. Adding moments yields an improvement by an additional factor of 2, and adding both moments and peaks improves by almost a factor of 3, over power spectrum tomography alone. We evaluate the effect of uncorrected systematic photometric redshift errors on the parameter constraints. Weak gravitational lensing causes subtle changes in the apparent shapes of galaxies due to the bending of light by the gravity of foreground masses. By measuring the shapes of large numbers of galaxies (millions in recent surveys, up to tens of billions in future surveys) we can infer the parameters that determine cosmology. Imperfections in the detectors used to record images of the sky can introduce changes in the apparent shape of galaxies, which in turn can bias the inferred cosmological parameters. In this paper we consider the effect of two widely discussed sensor imperfections: tree-rings, due to impurity gradients which cause transverse electric fields in the Charge-Coupled Devices (CCD), and pixel-size variation, due to periodic CCD fabrication errors. These imperfections can be observed when the detectors are subject to uniform illumination (flat field images). We develop methods to determine the spurious shear and convergence (due to the imperfections) from the flat-field images. We calculate how the spurious shear when added to the lensing shear will bias the determination of cosmological parameters. We apply our methods to candidate sensors of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) as a timely and important example, analyzing flat field images recorded with LSST prototype CCDs in the laboratory. We find that tree-rings and periodic pixel-size variation present in the LSST CCDs will introduce negligible bias to cosmological parameters determined from the lensing power spectrum, specifically w, {\Omega}m and {\sigma}8., Comment: 24pages, 12 figures and published by Astrophysical Journal

Constraining cosmology using weak gravitational lensing consists of comparing a measured feature vector of dimension $N_b$ with its simulated counterpart. An accurate estimate of the $N_b\times N_b$ feature covariance matrix $\mathbf{C}$ is essential to obtain accurate parameter confidence intervals. When $\mathbf{C}$ is measured from a set of simulations, an important question is how large this set should be. To answer this question, we construct different ensembles of $N_r$ realizations of the shear field, using a common randomization procedure that recycles the outputs from a smaller number $N_s\leq N_r$ of independent ray-tracing $N$--body simulations. We study parameter confidence intervals as a function of ($N_s,N_r$) in the range $1\leq N_s\leq 200$ and $1\leq N_r\lesssim 10^5$. Previous work has shown that Gaussian noise in the feature vectors (from which the covariance is estimated) lead, at quadratic order, to an $O(1/N_r)$ degradation of the parameter confidence intervals. Using a variety of lensing features measured in our simulations, including shear-shear power spectra and peak counts, we show that cubic and quartic covariance fluctuations lead to additional $O(1/N_r^2)$ error degradation that is not negligible when $N_r$ is only a factor of few larger than $N_b$. We study the large $N_r$ limit, and find that a single, 240Mpc$/h$ sized $512^3$-particle $N$--body simulation ($N_s=1$) can be repeatedly recycled to produce as many as $N_r={\rm few}\times10^4$ shear maps whose power spectra and high-significance peak counts can be treated as statistically independent. As a result, a small number of simulations ($N_s=1$ or $2$) is sufficient to forecast parameter confidence intervals at percent accuracy., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables; PRD accepted

We present an analysis of the impact of the tree rings seen in the candidate sensors of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) on galaxy-shape measurements. The tree rings are a consequence of transverse electric fields caused by circularly symmetric impurity gradients in the silicon of the sensors. They effectively modify the pixel area and shift the photogenerated charge around, displacing the observed photon positions. The displacement distribution generates distortions that cause spurious shears correlated with the tree-rings patterns, potentially biasing cosmic shear measurements. In this paper we quantify the amplitude of the spurious shear caused by the tree rings on the LSST candidate sensors, and calculate its 2-point correlation function. We find that 2-point correlation function of the spurious shear on an area equivalent to the LSST field of view is order of about $10^{-13}$, providing a negligible contribution to the 2-point correlation of the cosmic shear signal. Weak gravitational lensing is a powerful cosmological probe, with non--Gaussian features potentially containing the majority of the information. We examine constraints on the parameter triplet $(\Omega_m,w,\sigma_8)$ from non-Gaussian features of the weak lensing convergence field, including a set of moments (up to $4^{\rm th}$ order) and Minkowski functionals, using publicly available data from the 154deg$^2$ CFHTLenS survey. We utilize a suite of ray--tracing N-body simulations spanning 91 points in $(\Omega_m,w,\sigma_8)$ parameter space, replicating the galaxy sky positions, redshifts and shape noise in the CFHTLenS catalogs. We then build an emulator that interpolates the simulated descriptors as a function of $(\Omega_m,w,\sigma_8)$, and use it to compute the likelihood function and parameter constraints. We employ a principal component analysis to reduce dimensionality and to help stabilize the constraints with respect to the number of bins used to construct each statistic. Using the full set of statistics, we find $\Sigma_8\equiv\sigma_8(\Omega_m/0.27)^{0.55}=0.75\pm0.04$ (68% C.L.), in agreement with previous values. We find that constraints on the $(\Omega_m,\sigma_8)$ doublet from the Minkowski functionals suffer a strong bias. However, high-order moments break the $(\Omega_m,\sigma_8)$ degeneracy and provide a tight constraint on these parameters with no apparent bias. Lensing peaks have been proposed as a useful statistic, containing cosmological information from non-Gaussianities that is inaccessible from traditional two-point statistics such as the power spectrum or two-point correlation functions. Here we examine constraints on cosmological parameters from weak lensing peak counts, using the publicly available data from the 154 deg$^2$ CFHTLenS survey. We utilize a new suite of ray-tracing N-body simulations on a grid of 91 cosmological models, covering broad ranges of the three parameters $\Omega_m$, $\sigma_8$, and $w$, and replicating the Galaxy sky positions, redshifts, and shape noise in the CFHTLenS observations. We then build an emulator that interpolates the power spectrum and the peak counts to an accuracy of $\leq 5\%$, and compute the likelihood in the three-dimensional parameter space ($\Omega_m$, $\sigma_8$, $w$) from both observables. We find that constraints from peak counts are comparable to those from the power spectrum, and somewhat tighter when different smoothing scales are combined. Neither observable can constrain $w$ without external data. When the power spectrum and peak counts are combined, the area of the error "banana'' in the ($\Omega_m$, $\sigma_8$) plane reduces by a factor of $\approx2$, compared to using the power spectrum alone. For a flat $\Lambda$ cold dark matter model, combining both statistics, we obtain the constraint $\sigma_8(\Omega_m/0.27)^{0.63}=0.85\substack{+0.03 \\ -0.03}$., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. Residual errors in shear measurements, after corrections for instrument systematics and atmospheric effects, can impact cosmological parameters derived from weak lensing observations. Here we combine convergence maps from our suite of ray-tracing simulations with random realizations of spurious shear. This allows us to quantify the errors and biases of the triplet $(\Omega_m,w,\sigma_8)$ derived from the power spectrum (PS), as well as from three different sets of non-Gaussian statistics of the lensing convergence field: Minkowski functionals (MF), low--order moments (LM), and peak counts (PK). Our main results are: (i) We find an order of magnitude smaller biases from the PS than in previous work. (ii) The PS and LM yield biases much smaller than the morphological statistics (MF, PK). (iii) For strictly Gaussian spurious shear with integrated amplitude as low as its current estimate of $\sigma^2_{sys}\approx 10^{-7}$, biases from the PS and LM would be unimportant even for a survey with the statistical power of LSST. However, we find that for surveys larger than $\approx 100$ deg$^2$, non-Gaussianity in the noise (not included in our analysis) will likely be important and must be quantified to assess the biases. (iv) The morphological statistics (MF,PK) introduce important biases even for Gaussian noise, which must be corrected in large surveys. The biases are in different directions in $(\Omega_m,w,\sigma_8)$ parameter space, allowing self-calibration by combining multiple statistics. The weak lensing power spectrum is a powerful tool to probe cosmological parameters. Additionally, lensing peak counts contain cosmological information beyond the power spectrum. Both of these statistics can be affected by the preferential selection of source galaxies in patches of the sky with high magnification, as well as by the dilution in the source galaxy surface density in such regions. If not accounted for, these biases introduce systematic errors for cosmological measurements. Here we quantify these systematic errors, using convergence maps from a suite of ray-tracing N-body simulations. At the cut-off magnitude m of on-going and planned major weak lensing surveys, the logarithmic slope of the cumulative number counts s = dlog[n(>m)]/dlog(m) is in the range 0.1 < s < 0.5. At s = 0.2, expected in the I band for LSST, the inferred values of Omega_m, w and sigma_8 are biased by many sigma (where sigma denotes the marginalized error) and therefore the biases will need to be carefully modeled. We also find that the parameters are biased differently in the (Omega_m, w, sigma_8) parameter space when the power spectrum and when the peak counts are used. In particular, w derived from the power spectrum is less affected than w derived from peak counts, while the opposite is true for the best-constrained combination of [sigma_8 Omega_m^gamma] (with gamma=0.62 from the power spectrum and gamma = 0.48 from peak counts). This suggests that the combination of the power spectrum and peak counts can help mitigate the impact of magnification and size biases., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

The quantity and quality of cosmic structure observations have greatly accelerated in recent years. Further leaps forward will be facilitated by imminent projects, which will enable us to map the evolution of dark and baryonic matter density fluctuations over cosmic history. The way that these fluctuations vary over space and time is sensitive to the nature of dark matter and dark energy. Dark energy and gravity both affect how rapidly structure grows; the greater the acceleration, the more suppressed the growth of structure, while the greater the gravity, the more enhanced the growth. While distance measurements also constrain dark energy, the comparison of growth and distance data tests whether General Relativity describes the laws of physics accurately on large scales. Modified gravity models are able to reproduce the distance measurements but at the cost of altering the growth of structure (these signatures are described in more detail in the accompanying paper on Novel Probes of Gravity and Dark Energy). Upcoming surveys will exploit these differences to determine whether the acceleration of the Universe is due to dark energy or to modified gravity. To realize this potential, both wide field imaging and spectroscopic redshift surveys play crucial roles. Projects including DES, eBOSS, DESI, PFS, LSST, Euclid, and WFIRST are in line to map more than a 1000 cubic-billion-light-year volume of the Universe. We compare the efficiency of moments and Minkowski functionals (MFs) in constraining the subset of cosmological parameters (Omega_m,w,sigma_8) using simulated weak lensing convergence maps. We study an analytic perturbative expansion of the MFs in terms of the moments of the convergence field and of its spatial derivatives. We show that this perturbation series breaks down on smoothing scales below 5', while it shows a good degree of convergence on larger scales (15'). Most of the cosmological distinguishing power is lost when the maps are smoothed on these larger scales. We also show that, on scales comparable to 1', where the perturbation series does not converge, cosmological constraints obtained from the MFs are approximately 1.5-2 times better than the ones obtained from the first few moments of the convergence distribution --- provided that the latter include spatial information, either from moments of gradients, or by combining multiple smoothing scales. Including either a set of these moments or the MFs can significantly tighten constraints on cosmological parameters, compared to the conventional method of using the power spectrum alone., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables

Peaks in two-dimensional weak lensing (WL) maps contain significant cosmological information, complementary to the WL power spectrum. This has recently been demonstrated using N-body simulations which neglect baryonic effects. Here we employ ray-tracing N-body simulations in which we manually steepen the density profile of each dark matter halo, mimicking the cooling and concentration of baryons into dark matter potential wells. We find, in agreement with previous works, that this causes a significant increase in the amplitude of the WL power spectrum on small scales (spherical harmonic index l>1,000). We then study the impact of the halo concentration increase on the peak counts, and find the following. (i) Low peaks (with convergence 0.02 < kappa_peak < 0.08), remain nearly unaffected. These peaks are created by a constellation of several halos with low masses (10^12-10^13 M_sun) and large angular offsets from the peak center (> 0.5 R_vir); as a result, they are insensitive to the central halo density profiles. These peaks contain most of the cosmological information, and thus provide an unusually sensitive and unbiased probe. (ii) The number of high peaks (with convergence kappa_peak > 0.08) is increased. However, when the baryon effects are neglected in cosmological parameter estimation, then the high peaks lead to a modest bias, comparable to that from the power spectrum on relatively large-scales (l<2000), and much smaller than the bias from the power spectrum on smaller scales (l>2,000). (iii) In the 3D parameter space (sigma_8, Omega_m, w), the biases from the high peaks and the power spectra are in different directions. This suggests the possibility of "self-calibration": the combination of peak counts and power spectrum can simultaneously constrain baryonic physics and cosmological parameters., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Recent studies have shown that the number counts of convergence peaks N(kappa) in weak lensing (WL) maps, expected from large forthcoming surveys, can be a useful probe of cosmology. We follow up on this finding, and use a suite of WL convergence maps, obtained from ray-tracing N-body simulations, to study (i) the physical origin of WL peaks with different heights, and (ii) whether the peaks contain information beyond the convergence power spectrum P_ell. In agreement with earlier work, we find that high peaks (with amplitudes >~ 3.5 sigma, where sigma is the r.m.s. of the convergence kappa) are typically dominated by a single massive halo. In contrast, medium-height peaks (~0.5-1.5 sigma) cannot be attributed to a single collapsed dark matter halo, and are instead created by the projection of multiple (typically, 4-8) halos along the line of sight, and by random galaxy shape noise. Nevertheless, these peaks dominate the sensitivity to the cosmological parameters w, sigma_8, and Omega_m. We find that the peak height distribution and its dependence on cosmology differ significantly from predictions in a Gaussian random field. We directly compute the marginalized errors on w, sigma_8, and Omega_m from the N(kappa) + P_ell combination, including redshift tomography with source galaxies at z_s=1 and z_s=2. We find that the N(kappa) + P_ell combination has approximately twice the cosmological sensitivity compared to P_ell alone. In this paper, we show that Minkowski Functionals (MFs) of weak gravitational lensing (WL) convergence maps contain significant non-Gaussian, cosmology-dependent information. To do this, we use a large suite of cosmological ray-tracing N-body simulations to create mock WL convergence maps, and study the cosmological information content of MFs derived from these maps. Our suite consists of 80 independent 512^3 N-body runs, covering seven different cosmologies, varying three cosmological parameters Omega_m, w, and sigma_8 one at a time, around a fiducial LambdaCDM model. In each cosmology, we use ray-tracing to create a thousand pseudo-independent 12 deg^2 convergence maps, and use these in a Monte Carlo procedure to estimate the joint confidence contours on the above three parameters. We include redshift tomography at three different source redshifts z_s=1, 1.5, 2, explore five different smoothing scales theta_G=1, 2, 3, 5, 10 arcmin, and explicitly compare and combine the MFs with the WL power spectrum. We find that the MFs capture a substantial amount of information from non-Gaussian features of convergence maps, i.e. beyond the power spectrum. The MFs are particularly well suited to break degeneracies and to constrain the dark energy equation of state parameter w (by a factor of ~ three better than from the power spectrum alone). The non-Gaussian information derives partly from the one-point function of the convergence (through V_0, the "area" MF), and partly through non-linear spatial information (through combining different smoothing scales for V_0, and through V_1 and V_2, the boundary length and genus MFs, respectively). Similar to the magnification of the galaxies' fluxes by gravitational lensing, the extinction of the fluxes by comic dust, whose existence is recently detected by Menard et al (2009), also modify the distribution of a flux-selected galaxy sample. We study the anisotropic distortion by dust extinction to the 3D galaxy correlation function, including magnification bias and redshift distortion at the same time. We find the extinction distortion is most significant along the line of sight and at large separations, similar to that by magnification bias. The correction from dust extinction is negative except at sufficiently large transverse separations, which is almost always opposite to that from magnification bias (we consider a number count slope s > 0.4). Hence, the distortions from these two effects tend to reduce each other. At low z (~<1), the distortion by extinction is stronger than that by magnification bias, but at high z, the reverse holds. We also study how dust extinction affects probes in real space of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the linear redshift distortion parameter beta. We find its effect on BAO is negligible. However, it introduces a positive scale-dependent correction to beta that can be as large as a few percent. At the same time, we also find a negative scale-dependent correction from magnification bias, which is up to percent level at low z, but to ~40% at high z. A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over 20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. We propose counting peaks in weak lensing (WL) maps, as a function of their height, to probe models of dark energy and to constrain cosmological parameters. Because peaks can be identified in two-dimensional WL maps directly, they can provide constraints that are free from potential selection effects and biases involved in identifying and determining the masses of galaxy clusters. We have run cosmological N-body simulations to produce WL convergence maps in three models with different constant values of the dark energy equation of state parameter, w=-0.8, -1, and -1.2, with a fixed normalization of the primordial power spectrum (corresponding to present-day normalizations of sigma8=0.742, 0.798, and 0.839, respectively). By comparing the number of WL peaks in 8 convergence bins in the range of -0.1 < kappa < 0.2, in multiple realizations of a single simulated 3x3 degree field, we show that the first (last) pair of models can be distinguished at the 95% (85%) confidence level. A survey with depth and area (20,000 sq. degrees), comparable to those expected from LSST, should have a factor of approx. 50 better parameter sensitivity. We find that relatively low-amplitude peaks (kappa = 0.03), which typically do not correspond to a single collapsed halo along the line of sight, account for most of this sensitivity. We study a range of smoothing scales and source galaxy redshifts (z_s). With a fixed source galaxy density of 15/arcmin^2, the best results are provided by the smallest scale we can reliably simulate, 1 arcminute, and z_s=2 provides substantially better sensitivity than z_s< 1.5., Comment: 16 pages, submitted to Phys. We propose to use a simple observable, the fractional area of "hot spots" in weak gravitational lensing mass maps which are detected with high significance, to determine background cosmological parameters. Because these high-convergence regions are directly related to the physical nonlinear structures of the universe, they derive cosmological information mainly from the nonlinear regime of density fluctuations. We show that in combination with future cosmic microwave background anisotropy measurements, this method can place constraints on cosmological parameters that are comparable to those from the redshift distribution of galaxy cluster abundances. We conduct a Markov Chain Monte Carlo study of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) self-accelerating braneworld scenario given the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy, supernovae and Hubble constant data by implementing an effective dark energy prescription for modified gravity into a standard Einstein-Boltzmann code. We find no way to alleviate the tension between distance measures and horizon scale growth in this model. Growth alterations due to perturbations propagating into the bulk appear as excess CMB anisotropy at the lowest multipoles. In a flat cosmology, the maximum likelihood DGP model is nominally a 5.3 sigma poorer fit than Lambda CDM. Curvature can reduce the tension between distance measures but only at the expense of exacerbating the problem with growth leading to a 4.8 sigma result that is dominated by the low multipole CMB temperature spectrum. While changing the initial conditions to reduce large scale power can flatten the temperature spectrum, this also suppresses the large angle polarization spectrum in violation of recent results from WMAP5. (Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ground-based system sited at Cerro Pach\'{o}n in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg$^2$ field of view, and a 3.2 Gigapixel camera. The standard observing sequence will consist of pairs of 15-second exposures in a given field, with two such visits in each pointing in a given night. With these repeats, the LSST system is capable of imaging about 10,000 square degrees of sky in a single filter in three nights. The typical 5$\sigma$ point-source depth in a single visit in $r$ will be $\sim 24.5$ (AB). The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. The survey area will be contained within 30,000 deg$^2$ with $\delta<+34.5^\circ$, and will be imaged multiple times in six bands, $ugrizy$, covering the wavelength range 320--1050 nm. About 90\% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode which will uniformly observe a 18,000 deg$^2$ region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the anticipated 10 years of operations, and yield a coadded map to $r\sim27.5$. The remaining 10\% of the observing time will be allocated to projects such as a Very Deep and Fast time domain survey. We apply the technique of parameter-splitting to existing cosmological data sets, to check for a generic failure of dark energy models. Given a dark energy parameter, such as the energy density Omega_Lambda or equation of state w, we split it into two meta-parameters with one controlling geometrical distances, and the other controlling the growth of structure. Observational data spanning Type Ia Supernovae, the cosmic microwave background (CMB), galaxy clustering, and weak gravitational lensing statistics are fit without requiring the two meta-parameters to be equal. This technique checks for inconsistency between different data sets, as well as for internal inconsistency within any one data set (e.g., CMB or lensing statistics) that is sensitive to both geometry and growth. We find that the cosmological constant model is consistent with current data. Theories of modified gravity generally predict a relation between growth and geometry that is different from that of general relativity. Parameter-splitting can be viewed as a crude way to parametrize the space of such theories. Our analysis of current data already appears to put sharp limits on these theories: assuming a flat universe, current data constrain the difference Omega_Lambda(geom) - Omega_Lambda(grow) to be -0.0044 +/- 0.0058 (68% C.L.); allowing the equation of state w to vary, the difference w(geom) - w(grow) is constrained to be 0.37 +/- 0.37 (68% C.L.). Interestingly, the region w(grow) > w(geom), which should be generically favored by theories that slow structure formation relative to general relativity, is quite restricted by data already. We find w(grow) < -0.80 at 2 sigma. We propose to use a simple observable, the fractional area of "hot spots" in weak lensing mass maps which are detected with high significance, to determine background cosmological parameters. Because these high-shear regions are directly related to the physical non-linear structures of the universe, they derive cosmological information mainly from the non-linear regime of density fluctuations. We show that in combination with future cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy measurements, this method can place constraints on cosmological parameters that are comparable to those from the redshift distribution of galaxy cluster abundances. In particular, adding the information from this simple shear statistic derived from an LSST-like survey to CMB anisotropy information from a Planck-like experiment improves the constraints on the dark energy parameters (energy density and equation of state) and the normalization of the matter power spectrum by over a factor of ten. Large future galaxy cluster surveys, combined with cosmic microwave background observations, can achieve a high sensitivity to the masses of cosmologically important neutrinos. We show that a weak lensing selected sample of ~100,000 clusters could tighten the current upper bound on the sum of masses of neutrino species by an order of magnitude, to a level of 0.03 eV. Since this statistical sensitivity is below the best existing lower limit on the mass of at least one neutrino species, a future detection is likely, provided that systematic errors can be controlled to a similar level., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, version accepted for publication in PRL

We show that the abundance and redshift distribution ($dN/dz$) of galaxy clusters in future high--yield cluster surveys, combined with the spatial power spectrum ($P_c(k)$) of the same clusters, can place significant constraints on the evolution of the dark energy equation of state, $w=w(a)$. We evaluate the expected errors on $w_a=-dw/da$ and other cosmological parameters using a Fisher matrix approach, and simultaneously including cluster structure evolution parameters in our analysis. We study three different types of forthcoming surveys that will identify clusters based on their X-ray emission (such as DUO, the Dark Universe Observatory), their Sunyaev--Zel'dovich (SZ) decrement (such as SPT, the South Pole Telescope), or their weak lensing (WL) shear (such as LSST, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope). We find that combining the cluster abundance and power spectrum significantly enhances constraints from either method alone. We show that the weak-lensing survey can deliver a constraint as tight as $\Delta w_a \sim 0.1$ on the evolution of the dark energy equation of state, and that the X-ray and SZ surveys each yield $\Delta w_a \sim 0.4$ separately, or $\Delta w_a \sim 0.2$ when these two surveys are combined. For the X-ray and SZ surveys, constraints on dark energy parameters are improved by a factor of two by combining the cluster data with cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy measurements by Planck, but degrade by a factor of two if the survey is required to solve simultaneously for cosmological and cluster structure evolution parameters.
