Abstract

A combination of whole cell transport assays and photoaffinity labeling of Pdr5p were used with [(super 125)I]iodoarylazidoprazosoin in purified plasma membrane vesicles to study the behavior of two series of novel substrates namely trityl (triphenylmethyl) and carbazole derivatives. The result showed that site 2, defined initially by tritymidazole efflux requires at least a single hydrogen bond acceptor group.

Abstract

The synthesis and structural characterization of novel tetranuclear and octanuclear iron(III) complexes were described. The structures of the iron(III) complexes are based on an almost square arrangement of four iron ions. The tetranuclear iron complex (Fe4(mu-O)2(mu-BMDP)2-(mu-OAc)2)(super 4+) is formed by reacting ferric nitrate, sodium acetate and the unsymmetrical binucleating ligand HBMDP. The tetranuclear iron complex was found to have coordination number asymmetry.

Abstract

Iron octaethyltetraazaporphyrin (Fe OETAP) complexes were prepared and subjected to spectroscopic, crystallographic, voltammetric and magnetic susceptibility studies. The results showed that Fe(OETAP), porphyrins and phthalocyanines featured similar properties. However, Fe(OETAP) exhibited greater sigma donor and pi acceptor activity than porphyrins and higher dissolution rate than phthalocyanines.

Abstract

A new europium salen complex, Eu(salen)2NH4, was synthesized, and its composition was confirmed by chemical analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Further characterization was carried out by 151 Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Mössbauer spectroscopic measurements were made at varying temperatures between 9 K and room temperature and a value of Debye temperature of 133 ±5 K was computed. Both Mössbauer and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirmed the paramagnetic behavior of this complex and the trivalent state of the europium ion. In view of the fact that the “odd” paramagnetic molecule NO has been shown to reverse sickling of red blood cells in sickle cell anemia, the interaction between the paramagnetic europium salen complex and sickle cells was examined after incubation with this europium complex and shown to have similar effects. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

These experiments measured the effect of gamma radiation on the nuclear envelope using doxyl-fatty acid spin-label probes. Nuclei were isolated from cultured MOLT-4 cells, a radiation-sensitive human T-cell lymphocyte. Membrane fluidity was measured from the electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of the probes. MOLT-4 cells were grown under standard conditions, and suspension were exposed to CO radiation at room temperature. The spectra of 5-doxylstearic acid in the nuclei were those of a strongly immobilized label. A difference in the membrane fluidity was detected in a series of experiments comparing labeled irradiated and nonirradiated nuclei. The change in fluidity was measured by comparing the changes in the order parameter, S, of the spin label in irradiated nuclei with those in control nuclei., Availability: Pub. in Radiation Research, v123 p263-267 1990.
