Abstract

Abstract Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts.

Abstract

True flies comprise approximately one-tenth of all animal species on Earth, yet despite their prevalence and ecological significance in freshwater ecosystems, members of the insect order Diptera are frequently neglected in stream studies. This absence or inconsistency regarding Diptera in literature and taxonomic lists may leave readers with a sense of discrepancy. To illustrate this underrepresentation in quantitative ecological investigations, we conducted a targeted literature-based meta-analysis, assessing the average level of Diptera identification and the reported number of families. These findings were compared to data from 639 quantitative samples collected across six European ecoregions (Mediterranean, Alpine, Continental, Balkanic, Pannonian, Boreal) during six, bimonthly repeated sampling campaigns in 2021 and 2022. Our analysis revealed that, compared to other macroinvertebrate groups, Diptera were typically identified at a less detailed level, often only to the family level, thereby failing to fully represent Diptera diversity, especially regarding rare, less abundant families. In our review of literature studies, we identified references to a total of 40 families. Notably, Chironomidae, Ceratopogonidae, and Simuliidae were consistently represented across the majority of studies, whereas nearly half of the families were exclusively mentioned in one or two studies. No significant differences were found in the number of families across continents or various habitat types. In our case studies the number of families was significantly higher than in European stream studies, suggesting that several rare families occasionally completely neglected during sampling, sample sorting or identification. We explored potential connections among Diptera assemblages through correlation and coexistence analyses. Our results highlighted the significant influence of the more frequent Chironomidae, Ceratopogonidae, and Simuliidae on the presence or absence of other families. While correlations between Diptera families were identified, attempts to develop a predictive model for the diversity and occurrence of minor families based on the abundance of major ones proved inconclusive. For future quantitative studies on macroinvertebrate communities, it is essential to recognize, identify and incorporate less abundant Diptera families, even on family level, or in higher taxonomic resolution, if possible, to enhance understanding and prevent the loss of information concerning this compositionally and functionally uniquely diverse insect group, which represent a significant part of the entire community, and gain a better understanding on their interactions with other aquatic groups.

Abstract

River networks are among Earth’s most threatened hot-spots of biodiversity and provide key ecosystem services (e.g., supply drinking water and food, climate regulation) essential to sustaining human well-being. Climate change and increased human water use are causing more rivers and streams to dry, with devastating impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Currently, more than a half of the global river networks consist of drying channels, and these are expanding dramatically. However, drying river networks (DRNs) have received little attention from scientists and policy makers, and the public is unaware of their importance. Consequently, there is no effective integrated biodiversity conservation or ecosystem management strategy of DRNs.A multidisciplinary team of 25 experts from 11 countries in Europe, South America, China and the USA will build on EU efforts to assess the cascading effects of climate change on biodiversity, ecosystem functions and ecosystem services of DRNs through changes in flow regimes and water use. DRYvER (DRYing riVER networks) will gather and upscale empirical and modelling data from nine focal DRNs (case studies) in Europe (EU) and Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to develop a meta-system framework applicable to Europe and worldwide. It will also generate crucial knowledge-based strategies, tools and guidelines for economically-efficient adaptive management of DRNs. Working closely with stakeholders and end-users, DRYvER will co-develop strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts in DRNs, integrating hydrological, ecological (including nature-based solutions), socio-economic and policy perspectives. The end results of DRYvER will contribute to reaching the objectives of the Paris Agreement and placing Europe at the forefront of research on climate change.

Abstract

Intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams (IRES) represent the majority of the global river network, support high biodiversity and provide multiple ecosystem services. However, they are being degraded at alarming rates, and it may be questioned whether current invertebrate-based biomonitoring protocols, which were designed for rivers and streams that flow all year round, are also appropriate for assessing the ecological status of IRES. Here, we test for the first time the efficiency of the French invertebrate-based biomonitoring indicators to assess the ecological status of intermittent rivers downstream six sewage treatment plants along a gradient of flow intermittence (i.e., the percentage of a year without flow at a given site). We found that the effects of drying confounded with that of sewage and in most cases, current biomonitoring metrics did not distinguish between the effect of sewage and those of drying. Except for the taxonomic richness of invertebrates resistant to drying, all metrics decreased linearly with increasing flow intermittence. In addition, the efficiency for detecting sewage effects was lower at intermittent reaches compared to perennial reaches. Last, we identified biological traits responding to flow intermittence, but not to sewage effluents, and we further discuss the implication for traits-based monitoring. If current biomonitoring protocols calibrated for perennial rivers could still be applied to reaches prone to weak flow intermittence, alternatives are urgently needed for integrating intermittent rivers into current biomonitoring national programs.

Abstract

As alien invasive species are a key driver of biodiversity loss, understanding patterns of rapidly changing global species compositions depends upon knowledge of invasive species population dynamics and trends at large scales. Within this context, the Ponto-Caspian region is among the most notable donor regions for aquatic invasive species in Europe. Using macroinvertebrate time series collected over 52 years (1968–2020) at 265 sites across 11 central and western European countries, we examined the occurrences, invasion rates, and abundances of freshwater Ponto-Caspian fauna. We examined whether: (i) successive Ponto-Caspian invasions follow a consistent pattern of composition pioneered by the same species, and (ii) Ponto-Caspian invasion accelerates subsequent invasion rates. In our dataset, Ponto-Caspian macroinvertebrates increased from two species in 1972 to 29 species in 2012. This trend was parallelled by a non-significant increasing trend in the abundances of Ponto-Caspian taxa. Trends in Ponto-Caspian invader richness increased significantly over time. We found a relatively uniform distribution of Ponto-Caspian macroinvertebrates across Europe without any relation to the distance to their native region. The Ponto-Caspian species that arrived first were often bivalves (46.5% of cases), particularly Dreissena polymorpha, followed secondarily by amphipods (83.8%; primarily Chelicorophium curvispinum and Dikerogammarus villosus). The time between consecutive invasions decreased significantly at our coarse regional scale, suggesting that previous alien establishments may facilitate invasions of subsequent taxa. Should alien species continue to translocate from the Ponto-Caspian region, our results suggest a high potential for their future invasion success highly connected central and western European waters. 10. Long-term trends in crayfish invasions across European rivers

Abstract

Europe has experienced a substantial increase in non-indigenous crayfish species (NICS) since the mid-20th century due to their extensive use in fisheries, aquaculture and, more recently, pet trade. Despite relatively long invasion histories of some NICS and negative impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, large spatio-temporal analyses of their occurrences are lacking. Here, we used a large freshwater macroinvertebrate database to evaluate what information on NICS can be obtained from widely applied biomonitoring approaches and how usable such data is for descriptions of trends in identified NICS species. We found 160 time-series containing NICS between 1983 and 2019, to infer temporal patterns and environmental drivers of species and region-specific trends. Using a combination of meta-regression and generalized linear models, we found no significant temporal trend for the abundance of any species (Procambarus clarkii, Pacifastacus leniusculus or Faxonius limosus) at the European scale, but identified species-specific predictors of abundances. While analysis of the spatial range expansion of NICS was positive (i.e. increasing spread) in England and negative (significant retreat) in northern Spain, no trend was detected in Hungary and the Dutch-German-Luxembourg region. The average invasion velocity varied among countries, ranging from 30 km/year in England to 90 km/year in Hungary. The average invasion velocity gradually decreased over time in the long term, with declines being fastest in the Dutch-German-Luxembourg region, and much slower in England. Considering that NICS pose a substantial threat to aquatic biodiversity across Europe, our study highlights the utility and importance of collecting high resolution (i.e. annual) biomonitoring data using a sampling protocol that is able to estimate crayfish abundance, enabling a more profound understanding of NICS impacts on biodiversity.

Abstract

AimInvasive alien species are a growing problem worldwide due to their ecological, economic and human health impacts. The “killer shrimp” Dikerogammarus villosus is a notorious invasive alien amphipod from the Ponto-Caspian region that has invaded many fresh and brackish waters across Europe. Understandings of large-scale population dynamics of highly impactful invaders such as D. villosus are lacking, inhibiting predictions of impact and efficient timing of management strategies. Hence, our aim was to assess trends and dynamics of D. villosus as well as its impacts in freshwater rivers and streams.LocationEurope.MethodsWe analysed 96 European time series between 1994 and 2019 and identified trends in the relative abundance (i.e. dominance %) of D. villosus in invaded time series, as well as a set of site-specific characteristics to identify drivers and determinants of population changes and invasion dynamics using meta-regression modelling. We also looked at the spread over space and time to estimate the invasion speed (km/year) of D. villosus in Europe. We investigated the impact of D. villosus abundance on recipient community metrics (i.e. abundance, taxa richness, temporal turnover, Shannon diversity and Pielou evenness) using generalized linear models.ResultsPopulation trends varied across the time series. Nevertheless, community dominance of D. villosus increased over time across all time series. The frequency of occurrences (used as a proxy for invader spread) was well described by a Pareto distribution, whereby we estimated a lag phase (i.e. the time between introduction and spatial expansion) of approximately 28 years, followed by a gradual increase before new occurrences declined rapidly in the long term. D. villosus population change was associated with decreased taxa richness, community turnover and Shannon diversity.Main ConclusionOur results show that D. villosus is well-established in European waters and its abundance significantly alters ecological communities. However, the multidecadal lag phase prior to observed spatial expansion suggests that initial introductions by D. villosus are cryptic, thus signalling the need for more effective early detection methods.

Abstract

Discovery of a new population of Rhithrogena delphinensis Sowa & Degrange, 1987, in the Arves Massif, and additions to the morphological description of the larva (Ephemeroptera, Heptageniidae). Rhithrogena delphinensis, described originally on the basis of four larvae from the Western Alps, south of the Arves Massif and from the northern flank of the Ecrins Massif, had not been captured again since 1986. Here, we report the discovery of a new population from river Arvan, whose drainage basin is located between the Grandes Rousses Massif and the northern flank of the Arves Massif. This newly discovered population seems abundant in numbers, and reveals the particular ecological requirements of the species as well as its dependence on glacier fed or nival streams. The morphological characteristics of the larvae are described in detail, and illustrated by photographs. The variability of some of the proposed identification criteria is discussed, and a key to the identification of the Rhithrogena species from the alpestris group of the Western Alps, to which R. delphinensis belongs, is provided. Finally, a portion of 658 base pairs of the COI gene of R. delphinensis is sequenced for the first time and compared to already existing data on the alpestris group in the Western Alps.

Abstract

As alien invasive species are a key driver of biodiversity loss, understanding patterns of rapidly changing global species compositions depends upon knowledge of biological invasion dynamics and trends. The Ponto-Caspian region is among the most notable donor regions for aquatic invasive species in Europe. Using macroinvertebrate time series collected over 52 years (1968–2020) at 265 sites across 11 European countries, we examined the occurrences, invasion rates and interspecific interactions of freshwater Ponto-Caspian fauna, as well as biotic homogenization trends in European waterways. According to our data, Ponto-Caspian macroinvertebrates increased from two species in 1972 to 29 species in 2012 and we found a greater richness of invading Ponto-Caspian macroinvertebrates in datasets collected closer to the source region. This may reflect dispersal lag times, indicating that more distant sites will be increasingly invaded in the future. The pioneering Ponto-Caspian species that arrived first were often bivalves (46.5% of cases), particularly Dreissena polymorpha, followed secondarily by amphipods (83.8%; primarily Chelicorophium curvispinum and Dikerogammarus villosus). With increasing invasions, the time between consecutively-appearing invaders decreased six-fold, indicating potential facilitations that improved invasion success of subsequent taxa. We detected a negative relationship between the abundance trends of the first and second Ponto-Caspian macroinvertebrate species, suggesting that interactions between these species are asymmetrical, with the initial invader facilitating the subsequent invader at the potential cost of its own population growth rate. Lastly, we found that macroinvertebrate communities became increasingly similar over time. European invasion rates from the Ponto-Caspian region suggest a high potential for future invasions from this region, with more hotspots and donor regions likely emerging.

Abstract

International audience; Microhabitat selection models are frequently used in rivers to evaluate anthropogenic effects on aquatic organisms. Fish models are generally developed from few rivers, with debatable statistical treatments for coping with overdispersed abundance distributions. Analyses of data from multiple rivers are needed to test their transferability and increase their relevance for stakeholders. Using 3,528 microhabitats sampled in nine French rivers during 129 surveys, we developed models for 35 specific size classes of 22 fish species. We used mixed‐effects generalized linear models (accounting for multiple surveys), involving B‐spline transformations (accounting for nonlinear responses) and assuming a negative binomial distribution (accounting for abundance overdispersion). We compared models of increasing complexity: no selection (M1), an “average” selection similar in all surveys (M2), two models with different selection across surveys (M3–M4). Of 132 univariate cases (specific size classes by habitat), 63% indicated selection for depth, 71% for velocity, 45% for substratum size and 13% for substratum heterogeneity. Abstract

International audience; Leptocerina is an endemic Afrotropical genus of Trichoptera, with 19 species documented but only five partially described at the larval stage. The first description of Leptocerina pauliani (Ross 1957) larva by Marlier & Marlier (1982) included very few illustrations, making comparisons with other species challenging. I present a revised description of the L. pauliani larval stage, using specimens collected from the River Marsouins in La Réunion Island. I apply a focus stacking approach for emphasizing coloration patterns and providing a detailed description of larval characters. Criteria for distinguishing L. pauliani from the other species of Leptocerina already described or partially described for the larval stage are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this work was to construct a score issued from a machine learning system with self-improvement capacity able to predict the fate of an ART embryo incubated in a time lapse monitoring (TLM) system. A retrospective study was performed. For the training data group, 110 couples were included and, 891 embryos were cultured. For the global setting data group, 201 couples were included, and 1186 embryos were cultured. No image analysis was used; morphokinetic parameters from the first three days of embryo culture were used to perform a logistic regression between the cell number and time. A score named DynScore was constructed, the prediction power of the DynScore on blastocyst formation and the baby delivery were tested via the area under the curve (AUC) obtained from the receiver operating characteristic (ROC). In the training data group, the DynScore allowed the blastocyst formation prediction (AUC = 0.634, p < 0.001), this approach was the higher among the set of the tested scores. Similar results were found with the global setting data group (AUC = 0.638, p < 0.001) and it was possible to increase the AUC of the DynScore with a regular update of the prediction system by reinforcement, with an AUC able to reach a value above 0.9. As only the best blastocysts were transferred, none of the tested scores was able to predict delivery. In conclusion, the DynScore seems to be able to predict the fate of an embryo. The reinforcement of the prediction system allows maintaining the predictive capacity of DynScore irrespective of the various events that may occur during the ART process. The DynScore could be implemented in any TLM system and adapted by itself to the data of any ART center.

In freshwater ecosystems, information on biological traits related to organisms’ morphology, life history and behaviour provides useful dispersal proxies, but information remains scattered or unpublished for many taxa. We compiled information on multiple dispersal-related biological traits of European aquatic macroinvertebrates in a unique resource, the DISPERSE database. DISPERSE includes nine dispersal-related traits subdivided into 39 trait categories for 480 taxa, including Annelida, Mollusca, Platyhelminthes, and Arthropoda such as Crustacea and Insecta, generally at the genus level. Information within DISPERSE can be used to address fundamental research questions in metapopulation ecology, metacommunity ecology, macroecology and evolutionary ecology. Information on dispersal proxies can be applied to improve predictions of ecological responses to global change, and to inform improvements to biomonitoring, conservation and management strategies. Motivation Dispersal is an essential process in population and community dynamics but is difficult to measure in the field. In freshwater systems, relevant information on the dispersal of many taxa remains scattered or unpublished, and biological traits related to organisms’ morphology, life history and behaviour offer useful dispersal proxies. We compiled information on selected dispersal-related biological traits of European aquatic macroinvertebrates in a unique source: the DISPERSE database. Information within DISPERSE can be used to address fundamental questions in metapopulation ecology, metacommunity ecology, macroecology, and eco-evolutionary research. From an applied perspective, the consideration of dispersal proxies can also improve predictions of ecological responses to global change, and contribute to more effective biomonitoring and conservation management strategies. Main types of variable contained Selected macroinvertebrate dispersal-related biological traits: maximum body size, adult female wing length, adult wing pair type, adult life span, number of reproductive cycles per year, lifelong fecundity, dispersal mode (i.e. active, passive, aquatic, aerial), and propensity to drift. Spatial location Europe. Time period Taxa considered are extant with recent records. Most data were collected in the 20th century and in the period 2000-2019. Major taxa and level of measurement Aquatic macroinvertebrates from riverine and lacustrine ecosystems, including Mollusca, Annelida, Platyhelminthes, and Arthropoda such as Crustacea and Insecta. For Insecta, aquatic stages and the aerial (i.e. flying) phases of adults were considered separately. Genus-level taxonomic resolution used, except for some Annelida and Diptera, which are coded at the sub-class, family or sub-family level. In total, the database includes 39 trait categories grouped into nine dispersal-related traits for 480 taxa. Software format The data file is in Excel workbook. BIOSKETCH Many of the authors are members of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action CA15113 Science and Management of Intermittent Rivers and Ephemeral Streams (SMIRES, www.smires.eu ), which aims to improve our understanding of intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams (IRES) and translate this into science-based, sustainable management of river networks. One of the main goals of SMIRES is to facilitate sharing of data and experience, bringing together researchers from many disciplines and stakeholders and creating synergies through networking. The dataset provided and analyzed herein reflects networking and collaboration within the SMIRES working group dedicated to Community Ecology and Biomonitoring.

Abstract

International audience; The transferability of hydraulic microhabitat selection models among rivers has been largely debated. It can influence management decisions such as restoration measures or environmental flow definitions. We updated microhabitat selection models for 258 macroinvertebrate taxa, with 141 species, collected in 2128 Surber or Hess samples during 91 surveys (sites × dates) distributed in eleven small streams to large rivers of Germany and France. We compared microhabitat selection for four hydraulic variables, developed using mixed-effects models that account for the overdispersion of observed abundance, partly due to spatial aggregation. Models based on bed shear stress, water column velocity and Froude number showed comparable results and were stronger than models for water depth. For these velocity-related variables, 61–78% of models were significant and revealed variable response forms among taxa. The explanatory power of “average” microhabitat selection models, with response forms common to all surveys, was 78–83% of the explanatory power of more detailed models with variable response forms. Significant associations with biological traits such as locomotion, relation to substrate or food types suggested that microhabitat selection results from general biological processes. Our results indicate a high degree of transferability and can be useful in many basic and applied ecological studies.

Abstract

Growth regulator insecticides with juvenoid activity can affect the development and reproduction of non-target organisms such as crustaceans. In this perspective, our previous studies revealed deleterious effects of the juvenoid fenoxycarb at 5 μg L −1 on the embryogenesis and at 50 μg L −1 on the reproductive behavior of the amphipod Gammarus fossarum. In the present study, to determine whether data generated with one amphipod species can be extended to other gammarid species, we tested the effects of a 5 μg L −1 fenoxycarb exposure on three European amphipod species: G. fossarum, Gammarus roeseli, and Echinogammarus longisetosus. We exposed individually 60 freshly fertilized females to fenoxycarb throughout the entire oogenesis/embryogenesis cycle (i.e., 19 days). In newborn individuals from exposed embryos, we measured both pigmentation and lipid reserve impairments while in exposed females, we observed reproductive behavior. At 5 μg L −1 fenoxycarb, reproductive behavior was only altered in G. fossarum. This study demonstrates the variability of the toxic response among the three gammaridae species, underlining the need for acquiring data with a broad phylogenetic representation to better predict toxic effects on freshwater ecosystems. © 2019, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature., This research was financially supported by the French Ec2co program.

Abstract

River drying has drastic immediate effects on benthic invertebrates, but their high resilience reduces long-term effects on biodiversity and ecosystem functions (e.g. leaf litter decomposition). The hyporheic zone (saturated sediments below the riverbed) can be a refuge for invertebrates in dry rivers and a primary source of colonists supporting population resilience following flow resumption. However, factors such as the depth to the water table below the riverbed, which could determine the quality of the hyporheic refuge, are not well understood. We explored how depth to the water table (control, −5 cm, −30 cm and completely dry) during a 1-week drying event affected the survival and return to the substrate surface (%RTS) of Gammarus pulex (Crustacea : Amphipoda) using laboratory mesocosms. We measured litter decomposition and Gammarus energy stores to examine effects on ecosystem function and energetic costs for organisms crawling deeper into the hyporheic zone. Two populations, collected from intermittent and perennial rivers, were used to evaluate inter-population variability in response to drying. Survival and %RTS were reduced by ≤39% and 52%, respectively, in the −30 cm and dry treatments, and this had consequences for decomposition (≤46% reduction). Differences between populations in %RTS were high across treatments but did not generally affect survival and decomposition. Our results suggest that increases in depth to the water table during river drying, which often result from longer drying duration and water abstraction, could reduce invertebrate resilience and litter decomposition by diminishing the role of the hyporheic zone as a source of colonists. Abstract

International audience; The morphology of the larvae of three French species of Psychomyiinae: Psychomyia pusilla, Metalype fragilis and Paduniella vandeli are described. A set of characters on the head, the prothorax, and the anal prolegs makes it possible to identify the larvae of the fourth and fifth instars. A brief study of the world distribution of the genera Psychomyia, Metalype, and Paduniella is presented. An examination of the larvae of these three genera from literature data and personal observations offered us the possibility to test the validity of the set of characters obtained for the three French species. A key (with comments) of the three genera is provided.

Abstract

International audience; Testing our ability to predict the ecological effects of flow and habitat restoration is often complicated by the weaknesses of monitoring strategies. In this context, data-rich flow experiments are unique occasions to draw generic lessons concerning the predictive power of habitat-based models and the optimization of monitoring strategies. We provide an overview of such a data-rich restoration case study (hydrological changes in the Rhône River in France) and discuss some general lessons learnt from the project. The restoration started in 1999 and has combined so far minimum flow increases in four reaches (total length 47 km) and the dredging and/or reconnection of 24 floodplain channels. The project concerned many sites and involved quantitative ecological data (hydraulics, temperature, sediment, fish, macroinvertebrates) collected over long periods. Tests of habitat-based predictions indicated that general habitat models, calibrated in independent sites and focused on the main physical drivers, could predict population and community-level changes after restoration. An analysis of statistical power revealed that, even in the data-rich situation of the Rhône, the probability to detect a moderate change (50 - 200%) in a given taxon abundance was typically 15%. These results indicate how to improve feedback from future flow experiments.

Abstract

International audience; Since 2000, an ambitious ecological restoration program was carried out on the Rhône River (France). The two main restoration measures were the increase of minimum flow in by-passed sections and the floodplain channels rehabilitation. An inter-disciplinary research program was initiated since 1995 to evaluate the effects of restoration measures on both physical habitats and biological components (fish and aquatic macroinvertebrates communities). The objectives were to identify and quantify i) the main physical factors modified by restoration measures and ii) the impacts of these modifications on metrics related to aquatic communities. A predictive approach was choosen allowing the possibility to test the adequation between predictions obtained with models and observed values collected during the post-restoration monitoring. Results showed that the restoration measures increased the proportion of taxa that are fluvial specialists in by-passed channels and the beta diversity of macroinvertebrates communities within the floodplain. These results represent an important amount of knowledge usable for the management of large rivers.

Abstract

International audience; 1. Principal threats to running waters are linked to human-made discharge modifications, but tools to predict the quantitative consequences of flow restoration for benthic invertebrates in large rivers remain untested. 2. Quantitative benthos samples from two bypassed reaches (Pierre-Benite – PBE – and Chautagne – CHAU) of the French Rho^ne River were collected during four years each before and after minimum flow increases (from 10 to 100 m3 s␣1 at PBE and from 10 to 50 m3 s␣1 at CHAU). These samples provided observed ln-density changes for the 50 and 62 (PBE and CHAU, respectively) most abun- dant taxa (typically species or genera). For about half of the ‘model’ taxa among them, distinct pref- erence models for bottom shear stress categories were available from four reaches of the Upper Rho^ne River and from various German rivers. Linking these preference models with a statistical hydraulic model predicting frequencies of shear stress categories for any given discharge, we pre- dicted ln-density changes of the model taxa after restoration.3. Community structure of the abundant taxa changed clearly and rapidly after restoration at PBE but less clearly at CHAU. Our predictions explained a considerable amount of mean ln-density changes of our model taxa observed after restoration (75 and 30% at PBE and CHAU, respectively). They also explained (67 and 40% at PBE and CHAU, respectively) the model taxa scores along the principal components analysis axis that summarised the community variations of all abundant taxa before and after restoration. For taxa not identified to species (assessed as genus, tribe or family), the predicted ln-density changes were sometimes inaccurate at PBE (a Lower Rho^ne site), suggesting that the transferability of preference models for taxonomic levels above that of species can be problem- atic.4. If further developed, statistical habitat models focussing on ecologically relevant physical variables (in our case shear stress) should enable reliable quantitative assessments of associations between flow restoration efforts and achievable ecological improvement.

International audience; 1. A multiple-trait-based approach can provide predictions and interpretations of the responses of freshwater communities to river restoration that apply in different taxonomic contexts. We compared the observed and predicted effects of restoration on sets of traits in fish and invertebrate communi- ties in four reaches of the Rho^ne River. Restoration included minimum flow increases in three bypassed main channels and the reconnection of eight floodplain channels.2. Predictions (described in detail in three other articles in this Special Issue) were based on habitat models that related the density of modelled taxa to their physical habitats. We used trait information extracted from the literature to translate predicted taxonomic changes into predicted changes in traits. Observed changes in traits calculated for modelled taxa and for all taxa in the community were both compared to predictions.3. In 10 of 12 cases, observed changes in traits correlated with predicted ones. With few exceptions, the agreement was higher for fish and invertebrates in the main channels than for invertebrates in floodplain channels. Predictions translated to the trait category level improved those at the taxo- nomic level in 5/6 and 4/6 cases for modelled taxa and all taxa, respectively. However, the improve- ment was statistically significant according to a null model for 1/6 and 3/6 cases for modelled taxa and all taxa, respectively.4. The validation of trait predictions suggested that traits related to locomotion and attachment, as well as general biology and physiology, were particularly suited to predicting and understanding the effects of physical restoration. For example, after restoration, clingers and passive filter feeders domi- nated invertebrate communities in the main channels, whereas invertebrate communities in the flood- plain underwent a selection of traits frequent in running water (clingers, flattened shape and gill respiration). Within fish communities, the periodic life-history strategy that characterises fish species in downstream reaches (long life span, large body, late sexual maturity) increased with restoration, whereas the opportunistic strategy decreased. 5. Our results suggest that a better understanding of how hydraulics shapes traits in riverine systems is critically needed for assessing the effects of restoration measures impacting flow. In addition, exist- ing trait databases (especially for fish) should be expanded to better reflect the energetic trade-offs that organisms must make in various flow contexts.

International audience; 1. Data-rich restoration experiments offer opportunities to test the ability of bioassessment tools, such as those currently used to assess the ‘ecological status’ of waterbodies targeted by the European Water Framework Directive, to detect observed ecological changes. 2. Minimum flow increases in four regulated reaches of the French Rho^ne River modified the inverte- brate and fish communities in a predictable way, as detailed in other articles of this Special Issue. We tested the ability of several fish and macroinvertebrate metrics currently used in bioassessment to detect these changes. In addition, we considered changes in metrics that are expected to respond specifically to flow increase. These metrics were related to the habitat requirements of species, the ecological specialisation of communities and the abundance of macroinvertebrate functional groups (seen as surrogates for ecosystem attributes).3. For invertebrate communities, bioassessment metrics based on richness had equivocal responses to restoration and the Potamon-Type Index demonstrated no or contradictory responses to restoration. The French biotic index was not sensitive to restoration and instead depicted spatial differences in biological quality. For fish communities, the French fish index was marginally sensitive in the reach with the largest minimum flow increase and some of its metrics were sensitive in other reaches.4. Contrasting with commonly used bioassessment indices and metrics, several metrics related to habitat requirements appropriately indicated the observed changes in community structure. Large flow changes increased the proportion of fish and macroinvertebrate individuals with preferences for midstream habitats, fast currents, deep waters and/or coarse substrates. However, these changes did not translate into the expected increase in ecological specialisation. In addition, functional metrics indicated that restoration led to higher proportions of grazers and higher availability of suspended food for filtering collectors, suggesting a return to the ecological conditions of a large river.5. The mixed and potentially contradictory responses of the different metrics confirm the difficulty of establishing benchmarks for ecological indicators in large-regulated rivers and the need to design appropriate bioassessment metrics.

Abstract

Co-occurrence of mature larvae and male pharate pupae in benthos samples from the Loire River enabled descriptions of the larva of Homilia leucophaea. Using characters of the head capsule, the labrum, the meso- and metanotum, and the pro- and metathoracic legs, we compared H. leucophaea with larvae of six western European Athripsodes species, including a larval key to these species. The larva of H. leucophaea shares characters with some of the six Athripsodes species. However, without a phylogenetic analysis including larvae, pupae, and adults of Homilia species from the Afrotropical Region, it is currently impossible to decide about a potential synonymy between Athripsodes and Homilia.

Abstract

International audience; Intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams (IRES) represent the majority of the global river network, support high biodiversity and provide multiple ecosystem services. However, they are being degraded at alarming rates, and it may be questioned whether current invertebrate-based biomonitoring protocols, which were designed for rivers and streams that flow all year round, are also appropriate for assessing the ecological status of IRES. Here, we test for the first time the efficiency of the French invertebrate-based biomonitoring indicators to assess the ecological status of intermittent rivers downstream six sewage treatment plants along a gradient of flow intermittence (i.e., the percentage of a year without flow at a given site). We found that the effects of drying confounded with that of sewage and in most cases, current biomonitoring metrics did not distinguish between the effect of sewage and those of drying. Except for the taxonomic richness of invertebrates resistant to drying, all metrics decreased linearly with increasing flow intermittence. In addition, the efficiency for detecting sewage effects was lower at intermittent reaches compared to perennial reaches. Last, we identified biological traits responding to flow intermittence, but not to sewage effluents, and we further discuss the implication for traits-based monitoring. If current biomonitoring protocols calibrated for perennial rivers could still be applied to reaches prone to weak flow intermittence, alternatives are urgently needed for integrating intermittent rivers into current bio- monitoring national programs.
