SUMMARY By combining gravity and magnetic data in a joint inversion approach, 3-D information on the crustal structure of Wilkes Land, East Antarctica, is obtained and possible geological features become evident. Both data sets are combined through a coupling method which decreases the variation of information (VI) so data misfit and model dissimilarity are minimized simultaneously. In this manner, statistically compatible inversion results are obtained. The suitability of the method is demonstrated through a synthetic example using magnetic data and pseudo-gravity. Subsequently, we apply the method to gravity residuals and magnetic data and identify matching features of high magnitude density and susceptibility. Prominent structures in NW–SE direction along the edge of the Mawson craton and at the presumed Australo-Antarctic and Indo-Antarctic terrane boundaries are enhanced. Given the structural similarity between inverted susceptibility and density, and a strong indication of a parameter relationship, we suggest a clustering approach in order to differentiate distinct groups with similar parameter properties. The spatial distribution of these clusters reveals possible geological structures that agree with previous 2-D studies and rock measurements from the Indian and Australian continents. This shows that the VI joint inversion is a convenient approach for remote regions like East Antarctica with sparse geological samples.

The tectonic history of southern Africa includes Archean craton formation, multiple episodes of subduction and rifting and some of the world's most significant magmatic events. Lithospheric models based on seismological and magnetotelluric data show highly heterogeneous crustal structure, significant anomalies in the lithospheric mantle and strong variations of the depth to the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary. While some of the spatial patterns agree between different geophysical methods, there are also significant differences in the geometry and location of many structures. I perform a joint inversion of magnetotelluric and satellite gravity data to reconcile these apparent discrepancies. Resistivity and density are coupled through a newly developed Variation of Information constraint which strives to establish a one-to-one relationship between the two quantities. This allows the resistivity-density relationship to evolve data driven during the inversion. The final combined resistivity-density model shows detailed lithospheric and sub-lithospheric structure below the Kaapvaal Craton and adjacent mobile belts. In addition, the retrieved parameter relationship exhibits several branches indicating strong variations in composition. Compared to results from a similar inversion in the western United States, the inversion indicates significantly less fluid related low resistivity anomalies and a dominance of high-density low-resistivity structures. This corroborates earlier ideas that fluids are difficult to contain within in the Earth over long time scales. I will discuss the implications for the tectonic evolution of the region and for the interpretation of low resistivity anomalies world-wide.

The Wilkes Subglacial Basin hosts potentially the largest unstable sector of the East Antarctica Ice Sheet due to the depth of the ice bed below sea level. Ice covering such basins poses a potentially high, but poorly constrained risk for future sea-level rise, as it is more vulnerable to melting by warming of the surrounding ocean. Such melting could potentially trigger mechanisms of unstable retreat. The neighbouring Transantarctic Mountains are the largest non-contractional mountain range on Earth. Traditionally, the Transantarctic Mountains are viewed as dividing the ancient East Antarctic craton from the younger West Antarctic Rift system. However, petrological samples and previous geophysical mapping suggest that the craton boundary is further west, following the western edge of the Wilkes Subglacial Basin. Subglacial geology influences geothermal heat flow and bed roughness, and therefore to better understand the past, present and possible future behaviour of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet improved understanding of the subglacial geology on which it flows, especially in the Wilkes Subglacial Basin and Transantarctic Mountains region, is important.We present a new 3D crustal model of the Wilkes Subglacial Basin and the Transantarctic Mountains based on joint inversion of airborne gravity and magnetic data using the mutual information inversion algorithm incorporated in the software JIF3D. Our model shows a large intrusive body located in the interior of the Wilkes Subglacial Basin and suggests a tectonically complex area west of the Basin, which could potentially indicate the transition zone at the margin of the Terre Adélie Craton. Geological units are inferred by clustering of inverted susceptibility and density distribution and are validated against sparse petrological samples from the Transantarctic Mountains region and along the George V Land and Terre Adélie coasts. Our inferred crustal properties model can provide crucial insight into the heterogeneity of subglacial geology in terms of thermal conductivity and crustal heat production, which could influence the geothermal heat flow in this area and therefore make the overlying ice sheet more vulnerable than commonly thought.

Geophysical methods such as seismology, magnetotellurics and gravity are key to reconstructing the structure of the upper mantle and inferring its composition. However, the relationship between composition and geophysical parameters, e.g. seismic velocity, resistivity or density, is complex and depends on other factors such as temperature, for example. This makes it difficult to untangle the various effects from inversions based on single parameters. Joint inversion establishes quantitative relationships between different geophysical parameters and thus provides additional information that can be interpreted in terms of composition and temperature. I use 3D joint inversion of surface wave, gravity and magnetotelluric data to construct integrated models in a data driven way. The relationship between the different quantities is recovered as part of the inversion through a Variation of Information based constraint. This constraint aims at establishing a one-to-one relationship between each parameter pair. Results from the western United States, Germany, Southern Africa and Australia show that this approach can retrieve highly detailed and strongly coupled results that can be interpreted, for example, in terms of hydration of the lithosphere. Comparison of results from different geologic domains indicates significantly different relationships depending on formation age. I will discuss how we can use data driven parameter relationships to infer the state of the lithosphere. In addition, I will outline the road towards robust quantitative inference based on these relationships.

Greenland’s tectonic history is complex, and the resulting lithospheric structure is, although extensively studied, not well constrained. Most models agree regarding the location of the North Atlantic Craton in South Greenland, and the most recent surface heat flow model also predicts a cold lithosphere for that area. However, the velocity anomaly from the regional tomography NAT2021 shows two additional cratonic blocks in North Greenland that are not included in geological maps and previous lithospheric models. To resolve these differences, we built a lithospheric model for Greenland that is compatible with multiple observables and focuses on data integration. In the first step, a background model is set up that uses petrological information of the mantle to model coherent seismic velocities, densities, and temperatures down to a depth of 400 km. The lithospheric model is then adjusted to reproduce the seismic velocities from NAT2021, the gravity field from satellite data and the isostatic elevation. In a second step, we jointly inverted the residual gravity field data from the lithospheric background model together with airborne magnetic data to estimate the crustal density and susceptibility structure. Both rock properties are coupled with a variation of information coupling constraint that establishes a distinct parameter relationship. To assess the compatibility of the thermal structure of our model with the most recent geothermal heat flow model for Greenland, we perform a grid search for the crustal radiogenic heat production, which would be necessary to reproduce this recent geothermal heat flow map. Finally, the results from the different steps are combined by cluster analysis and compared with petrophysical data from a newly established database of Greenland.The iterative workflow provides novel insights into the sub-ice geology of Greenland. We can model three cratonic blocks with LAB depths greater than 200 km and simultaneously fit the gravity, magnetic and elevation data in Greenland and the most recent geothermal heat flow model.

Detection of geophysical signatures associated with a geologic event, such as a volcanic eruption, is key to understanding the underlying physical processes and making an accurate hazard assessment. Magma reservoirs are the main repositories for eruptible magma, and understanding them requires the ability to detect and interpret changes in the magmatic system from surface measurements. Traditionally, monitoring for these changes has been done with seismic and geodetic approaches, both of which require dynamic ‘active’ changes within the magmatic system. Seismic monitoring relies on the number and location of earthquakes, to indicate magma migrating within the magmatic system. In contrast, geodetic efforts rely on identifying ground inflation events which have traditionally been interpreted to represent recharge of magma from a deep parental source into shallower crustal reservoirs. Neither of these techniques is sensitive to the petrology or temperature of the magma though. Thus, additional monitoring techniques able to detect ‘static’ phase changes in the evolving magma and the thermal structure of the magma reservoir are needed. The magnetotelluric method, measures subsurface electrical properties and is sensitive to both ‘magma on the move’ and these petrological changes that occur within the magma reservoir itself. Using Mount St Helens where a detailed magnetotelluric survey was completed during the most recent dome building eruptive phase 2005-06, and is now in a period of quiescence, we compare the original measurements from 2005-06 to repeated measurements in the same locations in 2022 to develop the temporal analysis approaches required for monitoring application. In addition to the repeat campaign we have deployed 4 long-term monitoring stations with continuous data observation and telemetry to local servers. First, qualitative, comparisons of the data from different time periods indicate some significant changes in subsurface conductivity. We will present an overview of the newly acquired data and the monitoring setup and discuss where the most significant changes occur.

When interpreting geophysical models, we need to establish a link between the models' physical parameters and geological units. To define these connections, it is crucial to consider and compare geophysical models with multiple, independent parameters. Particularly in complex geological scenarios, such as the rifted passive margin offshore Namibia, multi-parameter analysis and joint inversion are key techniques for comprehensive geological inferences. The models resulting from joint inversion enable the definition of specific parameter combinations, which can then be ascribed to geological units. Here we perform a user-unbiased clustering analysis of the two parameters electrical resistivity and density from two models derived in a joint inversion along the Namibian passive margin. We link the resulting parameter combinations to breakup-related lithology and infer the history of margin formation. This analysis enables us to clearly differentiate two types of sediment cover. The first type of sediment cover occurs near the shore and consists of thick, clastic sediments, while the second type of sediment cover occurs further offshore and consists of more biogenic, marine sediments. Furthermore, we clearly identify areas of interlayered massive, and weathered volcanic flows, which are usually only identified in reflection seismic studies as seaward-dipping reflectors. Lastly, we find a distinct difference in the signature of the transitional crust south of and along the supposed hotspot track Walvis Ridge. We ascribe this contrast to an increase in magmatic activity above the volcanic centre along Walvis Ridge and potentially a change in the melt sources or depth of melting. This change of the predominant volcanic signature characterizes a rift-related southern complex and a plume-driven Walvis Ridge regime. All of these observations demonstrate the importance of multi-parameter geophysical analysis for large-scale geological interpretations. Additionally, our results may improve future joint inversions using direct parameter coupling, by providing a guideline for the complex passive margin's parameter correlations.

Density perturbations in the subsurface are the main driver of mantle convection and can contribute to lithospheric deformation. However, in many places the density structure in the subsurface is poorly constrained. Most geodynamic models rely on simplified equations of state or use linear seismic velocity perturbations to density conversions. In this study, we investigate the density structure beneath the Rungwe Volcanic Province (RVP), which is the southernmost volcanic center in the Western Branch of the East African Rift (EAR). We use shear-wave velocity perturbations (dlnvs) as a reference model to perform constrained inversions of satellite gravity data centered on the RVP. We use the code jif3D with a dlnvs-density coupling criterion based on mutual information to generate a 3D density model beneath the RVP up to a depth of 660 km. Our results reveal a conspicuous negative density anomaly (∼−200 kg/m3) in the sublithospheric mantle (at depths ranging from ∼100 km to ∼250 km) beneath the central part of the Malawi Rift extending to the west, beneath the Niassa Craton, coincident with locations with positive shear-wave velocity perturbations (+7%). We calculate a 3D model of the velocity-to-density conversion factor (f) and find negative f-values beneath the Niassa Craton which suggests the observed negative density anomaly is mostly due to compositional variations. Apart from the Niassa Craton, there are generally positive f-values in the study area, which suggest dominance of temperature control on the density structure. Although the RVP generally shows negative density anomalies and positive f-values, at shallow depths (f≈ 0, which suggests important contributions of both temperature and composition on the density structure possibly due to the presence of plume material. The negative buoyancy of the Niassa Craton contributes to its long stability, while constituting a barrier to the southward flow of plume material, thus restricting the southward continuation of magmatism in the Western Branch of the EAR. The presence of a negative-density anomaly where dlnvs are positive is incompatible with models based on the use of simple dlnvs to density conversion factors. These results have implications on how dlnvs models are converted to density perturbations.

This article is composed of three independent commentaries about the state of Integrated, Coordinated, Open, Networked (ICON) principles (Goldman et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1002/essoar.10508554.1) in the Geomagnetism, Paleomagnetism, and Electromagnetism (GPE) section and discussion on the opportunities and challenges of adopting them. Each commentary focuses on a different topic: Global collaboration, reproducibility, data sharing and infrastructure; Inclusive equitable, and accessible science: Involvement, challenges, and support of early career, BIPOC, women, LGBTQIA+, and/or disabled researchers; Community engagement, citizen science, education, and stakeholder involvement. Data sharing practices and open repository use still varies strongly between GPE communities. Some have a long tradition of data sharing; others are only starting it. Globally, GPE leadership is strongly dominated by white males and diversity may increase through the creation of Science Equality Commissions. Improved global stakeholder involvement can increase research impacts and help fight inequalities. In all investigated topics we see promising beginnings but also recognize obstacles that include a lack of funding, a lack of understanding of diversity, and prioritizing short-term gain over long-term benefit. Nonetheless, we are hopeful that our community will embrace ICON science

Joint inversion of complementary datasets is an important tool to gather new insights and aid interpretation, especially in regions which show structural complexity. Using the joint inversion framework jif3D [1] with a newly developed coupling for density and resistivity, based on a variation of information approach which is a machine-learning method that constructs a possible relationship between the properties [2], we combine satellite gravity measurements with electromagnetic data, from broadband and long-period magnetotellurics [3,4,5,6].Central Mongolia is located in the continental interior, far from tectonic plate boundaries, yet has a high-elevation plateau and enigmatic widespread low-volume basaltic volcanism [7,8,9]. The processes responsible for developing this region remain unexplained and there are questions about its tectonic evolution. A recent project employed thermo-mechanical numerical modeling [10] to simulate the temporal evolution of various tectonic scenarios, offering an opportunity to test hypotheses and determine which are physically plausible mechanisms. Constraints on lithospheric properties, e.g., density distribution, are important for evaluating the geodynamic models. Furthermore, they can help shed light on questions regarding the nature of lower crustal electrical conductors [11], which may be related to tectonically-significant low-viscosity zones.We will present preliminary results that provide new constraints on the 3-D structure of the lithosphere beneath Central Mongolia, as well as a roadmap for moving towards integrating geophysical results into geodynamic modeling to better understand the evolution of the lithosphere. The location, volume and physical states of magma reservoirs are primary controls on the eruptive behavior of volcanic systems. Fundamental to understanding and monitoring these systems is the ability to identify reservoir size and physical properties, in particular melt fraction which plays an important role in the rheology and stability of a magmatic system. Large silicic volcanic eruptions in the geological record suggest that extensive pockets of melt-rich silicic magma must exist in the subsurface but such melt pockets have not been detected by geophysics. This has led to the question of whether the reservoirs that feed large volcanic eruptions are only melt-rich for a short time and thus would only be detected by geophysics shortly prior to an eruption. Magnetotelluric data measure the electrical resistivity of the subsurface and are sensitive to subsurface fluids and partial melts making it a powerful tool for imaging subvolcanic magma reservoirs. This study examines the ability for magnetotelluric data to accurately estimate melt fraction using both stochastic Bayesian inversion and deterministic regularized inversion. Results from synthetic modelling indicate that magnetotelluric data are best able to predict the melt fraction for the thick melt-rich layer using both inversion methods, though both methods under-estimate the true amount of melt. In addition, magnetotelluric data can accurately detect changes in melt fraction from crystal- rich mush (0.1 melt fraction) to melt-rich magma (0.9 melt fraction) for thick layers. Thickness is a key parameter which provides a method to assess the total volume of melt present, but it is difficult to estimate using smooth regularized inversions. Fixed-dimension Bayesian inversions provide estimates of layer thickness and their un- certainties and it is shown that estimates of total volume of melt are more accurate for both thin (0.2 km) and thick (1 km) layers than individual estimates of melt fraction or thickness alone. The melt fraction of the thin melt-rich layer is under-estimated using both the deterministic inversion method and the most probable solution of the Bayesian inversion. The Bayesian distribution of solutions has long tails which includes the true solution and better represents the uncertainty of the modelled parameters. As we consider past large melt-rich caldera eruptions at Taupo (New Zealand), Toba (Indonesia), Yellowstone and Long Valley (USA), our analysis suggests that thin melt-rich, potentially eruptible zones involved in large (e.g. > 500 km3) eruptions could be systematically misinterpreted as thicker non-eruptible crystal-rich mush zones. Testing the sensitivity of MT to detect melt accumulation in active magmatic systems has important implications for volcanic hazard assessment and the use of Bayesian inversions allows for a better understanding of the range of possible interpretations., Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 423, ISSN:0377-0273

SUMMARY Galvanic distortion of magnetotelluric (MT) data is a common effect that can impede the reliable imaging of subsurface structures. Recently, we presented an inversion approach that includes a mathematical description of the effect of galvanic distortion as inversion parameters and demonstrated its efficiency with real data. We now systematically investigate the stability of this inversion approach with respect to different inversion strategies, starting models and model parametrizations. We utilize a data set of 310 MT sites that were acquired for geothermal exploration. In addition to impedance tensor estimates over a broad frequency range, the data set also comprises transient electromagnetic measurements to determine near surface conductivity and estimates of distortion at each site. We therefore can compare our inversion approach to these distortion estimates and the resulting inversion models. Our experiments show that inversion with distortion correction produces stable results for various inversion strategies and for different starting models. Compared to inversions without distortion correction, we can reproduce the observed data better and reduce subsurface artefacts. In contrast, shifting the impedance curves at high frequencies to match the transient electromagnetic measurements reduces the misfit of the starting model, but does not have a strong impact on the final results. Thus our results suggest that including a description of distortion in the inversion is more efficient and should become a standard approach for MT inversion.

SUMMARY We present a new approach that allows for the inversion of quantities derived from the observed data using non-diagonal data covariance matrices. For example, we can invert approximations of apparent resistivity and phase instead of magnetotelluric impedance using this methodology. Compared to the direct inversion of these derived quantities, the proposed methodology has two advantages: (i) If an inversion algorithm allows for the specification of a full data covariance matrix, users can invert for arbitrary derived quantities by specifying the appropriate covariance matrix instead of having to rely on the inversion code to have implemented this feature. (ii) It is fully compatible with the assumptions of least-squares optimization and thus avoids potential issues with bias when inverting quantities that are nonlinear functions of the original data, We discuss the theory of this approach and show an example using magnetotelluric data. However, the same method can be applied to other types of geophysical data, for example gravity gradient measurements.

Refereed/Peer-reviewed The tectonic history of southern Africa includes Archean craton formation, multiple episodes of subduction and rifting and some of the world's most significant magmatic events. These processes left behind a compositional trail that can be observed in xenoliths and measured by geophysical methods. The abundance of kimberlites in southern Africa makes it an ideal place to test and calibrate mantle geophysical interpretations that can then be applied to less well-constrained regions. Magnetotellurics (MT) is a particularly useful tool for understanding tectonic history because electrical conductivity is sensitive to temperature, bulk composition, accessory minerals, and rock fabric. We produced three-dimensional MT models of the southern African mantle taken from the SAMTEX MT data set, mapped the properties of ∼36,000 garnet xenocrysts from Group I kimberlites, and compared the results. We found that depleted regions of the mantle are uniformly associated with high electrical resistivities. The conductivity of fertile regions is more complex and depends on the specific tectonic and metasomatic history of the region, including the compositions of metasomatic fluids or melts and the emplacement of metasomatic minerals. The mantle beneath the ∼2.05 Ga Bushveld Complex is highly conductive, probably caused by magmas flowing along a lithospheric weakness zone and precipitating interconnected, conductive accessory minerals such as graphite and sulfides. Kimberlites tend to be emplaced near the edges of the cratons where the mantle below 100 km depth is not highly resistive. Kimberlites avoid strong mantle conductors, suggesting a systematic relationship between their emplacement and mantle composition. Plain Language Summary: The present-day composition of Earth's tectonic plates results from past geological processes. We can learn about Earth's composition from deep rock samples that are carried to the surface during volcanic eruptions and by probing its physical properties, like electrical conductivity, with geophysics. In southern Africa, there are extensive deep rock samples, which have been brought to the surface by kimberlite volcanoes that also host diamonds, and also extensive geophysical data. In this article, we compare the rock compositions with electrical conductivity to learn more about Earth's composition. Our results show that the oldest parts of the plates, which retain compositions similar to their initial composition, appear resistive. On the other hand, regions that have been intruded by deep fluids or molten rock can be resistive or conductive, depending on the types of minerals that were formed during the intrusion. The kimberlite volcanoes mostly erupted through the edges of the most resistive parts of the plates and did not erupt through the conductors. These results will help us to make more accurate interpretations about the composition of parts of the Earth where we do not have deep rock samples.

Large earthquakes away from plate boundaries pose a significant threat to human lives and infrastructure, but such events typically occur on previously unknown faults. Most cases of intra-plate seismicity result from compression related to far-field plate boundary stresses. The April 2017 MW 6.5 earthquake in central Botswana, and subsequent events, occurred in a region with no previously known large earthquakes, occurred away from major present day tectonic activity, and accommodate extension rather than compression. Here, we present results from an integrated geophysical study that suggests the recent earthquakes may be a sign of future activity, controlled by the collocation of a weak upper mantle and weak crustal structure, between otherwise strong Precambrian blocks. Magnetotelluric data highlights Proterozoic continent accretion structure within the region, and shows that recent extension and seismicity occurred along ancient thrust faults within the crust. Our seismic velocity and resistivity models suggest a weak zone in the uppermost mantle, that does not persist to greater depths, and is therefore unlikely to represent mantle upwelling. The Botswana events may therefore be indicative of top-down extension as a response to large scale extensional forces.

The EarthScope USArray project provides high quality magnetotelluric and seismic observations, which have been used to identify tectonic boundaries of the USA. Combining these data sets together with satellite gravity observations, we investigate how the different data sets can complement each other in order to find a consistent model of the subsurface. Using a cross-gradient constraint, we first invert the magnetotelluric and gravity data sets in order to demonstrate the feasibility of our approach and to identify any difficulties. Once a joint conductivity and density model is found, we perform a full joint inversion of all three data sets. By comparison with models derived from separate inversions of the individual observables we can show how the different data sets interact. Examining the magnitude of the cross-gradient lets us distinguish parts of the model where a good agreement of the recovered structures has been achieved from those where differing patterns are necessary in order to achieve an acceptable data fit. In this presentation we will give an overview of our approach, highlight our strategy and show results from individual and joint inversions.

Understanding the driving mechanisms of continental breakup is still a key question in global geodynamics. The Namibian continental margin and Walvis Ridge offer an ideal area for related studies, because it accumulates on- and offshore magmatic features, associated with crustal stretching, a potential plume impact, and continental breakup. While previous studies in the area all agree on the general occurrence of these features, they have shown some contradictory results for their extent and depth. Therefore, we jointly invert different geophysical data sets to gain a deeper, three-dimensional insight into the continent-ocean-transition zone. In this study, we test three different cross-gradient coupling approaches for Magnetotelluric, Gravity and Seismic data sets or models. First, a fixed 3D density model is used as a structural constraint to MT data inversion. It’s impact is limited, due to large model areas with constant density values, and thus zero density gradients. Second, satellite gravity and MT data are jointly inverted. Both data sets reach a satisfactory misfit and the gravity data constraint slightly modifies the interpreted earth model. Third, a fixed 2D velocity model is used as a structural constraint for a 3D MT data inversion. Some assumptions had to be made to account for the dimensionality difference, but a sufficiently good data fit was achieved, and inversion benefits from a gradient structural model for the cross-gradient coupling. Earth model modifications through this velocity model constraint resemble the results from the joint Gravity-MT data inversion. The analysis of the three approaches, yields new insights into the cross-gradient coupling concept for joint inversion. Interpreting these three earth models, we believe, that continental break-up in the South Atlantic is neither driven solely by a large plume, nor by pure tectonic forces. High resistivites, velocities and densities in the lower crust point to an accumulation of plume material. However, the size of these features is not big enough to explain the Gondawana break-up as a result of a mega-plume arrival. Indications for a tectonically driven break-up initiation include evidence for extensive crustal stretching, and often an abrupt change to oceanic regime, with the upwelling asthenosphere in juxtaposition to the stretched continental lithosphere. As our models indicate a broader transitional zone, we exclude a pure tectonically driven continental break-up. Our favoured explanation incorporates aspects of both hypothesis, where an accumulation of so-called secondary plumes initiate rifting and break-up. These would be smaller plumes, rising from mid-mantle depths, which might have a common source in the deep mantle.

The 3 April 2017 Moiyabana intra-plate earthquake in central Botswana occurred in a region that, until then, had been assumed to be seismically quiet. Its location away from the East African Rift system in a Proterozoic mobile belt between Archean Cratons has raised questions on the triggering mechanism and sparked various studies investigating the crustal and mantle structure in the region, the focal mechanism and the displacement associated with the event. Aeromagnetic and magnetotelluric data indicate movement on a NW striking and NE dipping fault. However, the details of the fault geometry differ when analysing each dataset independently. The geophysical inversion results plus reconstructions of fault movement from InSAR data are all compatible with normal movement and reactivation of a previous thrust fault. An open question though is to which degree fluids are responsible for triggering the event. Here we present first results of reconciling the different available datasets in an integrated analysis. We will show an updated geophysical model of the region around the hypocenter. Such a model can help to shed light on the rupture processes during the earthquake and forms a first step to unravel the genesis of this intra-plate event.

We present the integrated geophysical modelling based on magnetotelluric (MT) method included in the crustal joint inversion with gravity data performed by JIF3D code and geophysical-petrological LitMod3D thermaly-selfconsistent mantle modelling. Performed geophysical modeling is primarily based on MT and regional gravity data with supporting information from seismic methods and geothermal data like Moho and lithospheric-asthenospheric boundary (LAB) depth used for building of the starting models. The integration among geophysical models is provided by the cross-gradient coupling method for the crustal structures and in the mantle, the coupling is provided petrological relationship based on compositional, temperature and pressure distribution information. The case study is focused on 3D modelling of the seismic 2T profile in central Slovakia crossing the major Carpathian tectonic units and the contact zone between European platform and Inner Carpathian block, which coincide with Carpathian Conductivity Anomaly (CCA).The geoelectrical models from the 3D integrated modeling image the CCA in depths of about 10 - 20km and shows great improvement in comparison with 2D MT models. The CCA exhibits 3D features represented by the offset, along the fault, in the northsouth direction in the northern part of the modelled area. The four basic segments were identified in the crust structure of the central Slovakia part of the Western Carpathians. The southernmost physically distinctive segment with high full crust conductivity caused by young volcanic activity shows the presence of the partial melt, with high geoelectrical conductivity, in the middle and lower crust caused by higher heat flow. These structures are situated to the southwest from the profile and finger type conductors indicate its penetration in northeast direction. These volcanic processes in the south are not connected with CCA presence and its origin, which is supposed to be the presence of graphite or mineralized water in mylonitized rocks on the sheer contact zones of European platform and Inner Western Carpathians.For mantle part of the integrated models, we studied different mantle compositions and fluid content within the lithospheric mantle to explain differences in electrical and seismic LAB. The calculated petrological conductivity model shows sensitivity of MT data on the LAB depth change, the correct input of composition parameters of lithospheric mantle and thermal field. The thermal steady state approximation was used to calculate surface heat flow in the area is lower than measured and estimated values from previous thermal studies. The differences between calculated and measured heat flow is primarily caused by high radiogenic production within the crust and not by the contribution from mantle.

In active volcanic arcs such as the Andean volcanic mountain belt, magmatically‐sourced fluids are channelled through the brittle crust by faults and fracture networks. In the Andes, volcanoes, geothermal springs and major mineral deposits have a spatial and genetic relationship with NNE‐trending, margin‐parallel faults and margin‐oblique, NW‐trending Andean Transverse Faults (ATF). The Tinguiririca and Planchón‐Peteroa volcanoes in the Andean Southern Volcanic Zone (SVZ) demonstrate this relationship, as their spatially associated thermal springs show strike alignment to the NNE‐oriented El Fierro Thrust Fault System. We constrain the fault system architecture and its interaction with volcanically sourced hydrothermal fluids using a combined magnetotelluric (MT) and seismic survey that was deployed for 20 months. High conductivity zones are located along the axis of the active volcanic chain, delineating fluids and/or melt. A distinct WNW‐trending cluster of seismicity correlates with resistivity contrasts, considered to be a reactivated ATF. Seismicity occurs below 4 km, suggesting activity is limited to basement rocks, and the cessation of seismicity at 9 km delineates the local brittle‐ductile transition. As seismicity is not seen west of the El Fierro fault, we hypothesize that this structure plays a key role in compartmentalizing magmatically‐derived hydrothermal fluids to the east, where the fault zone acts as a barrier to cross‐fault fluid migration and channels fault‐parallel fluid flow to the surface from depth. Increases in fluid pressure above hydrostatic may facilitate reactivation. This site‐specific case study provides the first three‐dimensional seismic and magnetotelluric observations of the mechanics behind the reactivation of an ATF.

In this review, I discuss the basic principles of joint inversion and constrained inversion approaches and show a few instructive examples of applications of these approaches in the literature. Starting with some basic definitions of the terms joint inversion and constrained inversion, I use a simple three-layered model as a tutorial example that demonstrates the general properties of joint inversion with different coupling methods. In particular, I investigate to which extent combining different geophysical methods can restrict the set of acceptable models and under which circumstances the results can be biased. Some ideas on how to identify such biased results and how negative results can be interpreted conclude the tutorial part. The case studies in the second part have been selected to highlight specific issues such as choosing an appropriate parameter relationship to couple seismic and electromagnetic data and demonstrate the most commonly used approaches, e.g., the cross-gradient constraint and direct parameter coupling. Throughout the discussion, I try to identify topics for future work. Overall, it appears that integrating electromagnetic data with other observations has reached a level of maturity and is starting to move away from fundamental proof-of-concept studies to answering questions about the structure of the subsurface. With a wide selection of coupling methods suited to different geological scenarios, integrated approaches can be applied on all scales and have the potential to deliver new answers to important geological questions.

Abstract Joint inversion strategies for geophysical data have become increasingly popular as they allow for the efficient combination of complementary information from different data sets. The algorithm used for the joint inversion needs to be flexible in its description of the subsurface so as to be able to handle the diverse nature of the data. Hence, joint inversion schemes are needed that 1) adequately balance data from the different methods, 2) have stable convergence behavior, 3) consider the different resolution power of the methods used and 4) link the parameter models in a way that they are suited for a wide range of applications. Here, we combine active source seismic P-wave tomography, gravity and magnetotelluric (MT) data in a petrophysical joint inversion that accounts for these issues. Data from the different methods are inverted separately but are linked through constraints accounting for parameter relationships. An advantage of performing the inversions separately is that no relative weighting between the data sets is required. To avoid perturbing the convergence behavior of the inversions by the coupling, the strengths of the constraints are readjusted at each iteration. The criterion we use to control the adaption of the coupling strengths is based on variations in the objective functions of the individual inversions from one to the next iteration. Adaption of the coupling strengths makes the joint inversion scheme also applicable to subsurface conditions, where assumed relationships are not valid everywhere, because the individual inversions decouple if it is not possible to reach adequately low data misfits for the made assumptions. The coupling constraints depend on the relative resolutions of the methods, which leads to an improved convergence behavior of the joint inversion. Another benefit of the proposed scheme is that structural information can easily be incorporated in the petrophysical joint inversion (no additional terms are added in the objective functions) by using mutually controlled structural weights for the smoothing constraints. We test our scheme using data generated from a synthetic 2-D sub-basalt model. We observe that the adaption of the coupling strengths makes the convergence of the inversions very robust (data misfits of all methods are close to the target misfits) and that final results are always close to the true models independent of the parameter choices. Finally, the scheme is applied on real data sets from the Faroe-Shetland Basin to image a basaltic sequence and underlying structures. The presence of a borehole and a 3-D reflection seismic survey in this region allows direct comparison and, hence, evaluate the quality of the joint inversion results. The results from joint inversion are more consistent with results from other studies than the ones from the corresponding individual inversions and the shape of the basaltic sequence is better resolved. However, due to the limited resolution of the individual methods used it was not possible to resolve structures underneath the basalt in detail, indicating that additional geophysical information (e.g. CSEM, reflection onsets) needs to be included.

Recent advances in our understanding of arc magmatic systems indicate that melt is stored for long periods in low‐melt fraction crystal mushes, and that eruptible magma reservoirs are short‐lived and are assembled rapidly by buoyancy‐induced instabilities and draining of the crystal mush. Many aspects of their architecture remain unclear, particularly in relation to their geometry and shallow melt distribution. We investigate the storage of melt below the active Soufrière Hills Volcano (SHV), Montserrat, using joint geophysical inversion combined with a quantitative interpretation approach based on rock physics. We jointly inverted active‐source P‐wave traveltimes and gravity anomalies to derive coincident 3D models of P‐wave velocity and density to a depth of 8 km. Comparative analysis of the active SHV and extinct Centre Hills volcano and effective elastic medium computations allow us to constrain temperature, melt fraction and melt geometry. A continuous column of partial melt is inferred beneath SHV, at 4‐8 km depth. Melt fraction is ~6% (ranging from 3% to 13% depending on melt geometry) and is maximum at 5‐6 km depth. When under‐recovery of the low‐vP volume is taken into account, the melt fraction is revised to ~17% (ranging from 11 to 28%). Analysis of vP/density cross plots indicates that the melt distribution is best represented by low‐aspect ratio geometries. These likely span a multi‐scale spectrum ranging from grain‐scale inclusions and fractures to 100‐meter‐scale dykes and sills. Our results confirm the concept of vertically extensive crystal mush including one or multiple more melt‐rich layers. Plain Language Summary We use data from the Soufrière Hills Volcano on Montserrat to study the storage of magma in the plumbing system of an active volcano. By measuring the time it takes for seismic waves to travel from artificial sound sources to recording instruments located on the island and on the seabed around it, we can determine the speed of sound in the rocks. By measuring small variations in the gravitational attraction, we can determine the density distribution. We then jointly analyze the speed of sound and density and calculate that the degree of melting of the rocks is between 6% and 17% and the total volume of molten rocks is 1.5 km3 to 4.5 km3. The partially molten region extends from 4 to at least 8 km depth. Some more thoroughly molten layers are likely present but are too small to be imaged with our method. Our findings support a model of the magma storage system comprised mostly of solid crystals with a relatively small amount of molten rocks. Galvanic distortion of magnetotelluric (MT) data due to small-scale surficial bodies or due to topography is one of the major factors that prevents accurate imaging of the subsurface. We present a 3-D algorithm for joint inversion of MT impedance tensor data and a frequency-independent full distortion matrix that circumvents this problem. We perform several tests of our algorithm on synthetic data affected by different amounts of distortion. These tests show that joint inversion leads to a better conductivity model compared to the inversion of the MT impedance tensor without any correction for distortion effects. For highly distorted data, inversion without any distortion correction results in strong artefacts and we cannot fit the data to the specified noise level. When the distortion is reduced, we can fit the data to an RMS of one, but still observe artefacts in the shallow part of the model. In contrast, in both cases our joint inversion can fit the data within the assumed noise level and the resulting models are comparable to the inversion of undistorted data. In addition, we show that the elements of the full distortion matrix can be well resolved by our algorithm. Finally, when inverting undistorted data, including the distortion matrix in the inversion only results in a minor loss of resolution. We therefore consider our new approach a promising tool for the general analysis of field MT data.

We present a 3-D cross-gradient joint inversion algorithm for seismic refraction and DC resistivity data. The structural similarity between seismic slowness and resistivity models is enforced by a cross-gradient term in the objective function that also includes misfit and regularization terms. A limited memory quasi-Newton approach is used to perform the optimization of the objective function. To validate the proposed methodology and its implementation, tests were performed on a typical archaeological geophysical synthetic model. The results show that the inversion model and physical parameters estimated by our joint inversion method are more consistent with the true model than those from single inversion algorithm. Moreover, our approach appears to be more robust in conditions of noise. Finally, the 3-D cross-gradient joint inversion algorithm was applied to the field data from Lin_an ancient city site in Hangzhou of China. The 3-D cross-gradient joint inversion models are consistent with the archaeological excavation results of the ancient city wall remains. However, by single inversion, seismic slowness model does not show the anomaly of city wall remains and resistivity model does not fit well with the archaeological excavation results. Through these comparisons, we conclude that the proposed algorithm can be used to jointly invert 3-D seismic refraction and DC resistivity data to reduce the uncertainty brought by single inversion scheme.

One of the main problem of 3D time domain controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) inversion is the high runtimes of forward modeling codes. We reduced the runtime of the 3D time domain finite difference CSEM code TEMDDD by the GPU-parallelization of expensive algorithms. The code solves the electromagnetic diffusion equation by discretization of spatial operators and subsequent calculation of eigenpairs. These eigenpairs are found by approximation of the eigenspace in a Krylov subspace using the spectral Lanczos decomposition Method. This algorithm was in its original form not parallelizable due to implementation of the upper boundary condition at the air-water interface. We show for the marine case that replacing the original boundary condition at the air-water surface by a discretized air layer allows GPU parallelization of every time consuming algorithm of the code in the marine case. Speedups between 20 and 60 have been achieved compared to the original code for a larger 3-D model. In this model the bathymetry from a survey area offshore Egypt is used as an example demonstrating that the parallelized version of the code is applicable to real survey scenarios.

We present results of three-dimensional joint inversion of seismic, magnetotelluric, and gravity data over a marine salt dome. Such structures are difficult to image with a single method, and our results demonstrate how combining different techniques can yield improved results. More importantly, we examine the reliability of velocity-conductivity relationships derived from structure-coupled joint inversion approaches. Comparison with a seismic reflection section shows that our models match the upper limit of the salt. Furthermore, velocity and resistivity logs from a borehole drilled into the salt dome's flank match, within error, those recovered by the inversion. The good match suggests that the difference in length scale does not have a significant effect in this case. This provides a strong incentive to incorporate borehole data into the joint inversion in the future and substantiates approaches that use the relationships derived from joint inversion models for lithological classification.

This chapter investigates the particular challenges for joint inversion in the context of hydrocarbon exploration. It reviews the current literature and introduces interesting approaches that have been developed in the context of hydrocarbon exploration and could potentially be used in other application areas as well. Joint inversion methods incorporating petro physical models of the reservoir can directly yield quantities of interest such as porosity and permeability, but have to be carefully tuned to the area under investigation. The chapter presents two detailed joint inversion case studies, one for subsalt imaging and one for sub basalt imaging. It also covers emulation of the forward calculation, a concept that can be applied generally in joint inversion, but has only been applied in hydrocarbon exploration. For a successful joint inversion, it is necessary to invert each dataset, construct different coupling approaches, and evaluate the impact on the final results.

Understanding the uncertainty associated with large joint geophysical surveys, such as 3D seismic, gravity, and magnetotelluric (MT) studies, is a challenge, conceptually and practically. By demonstrating the use of emulators, we have adopted a Monte Carlo forward screening scheme to globally test a prior model space for plausibility. This methodology means that the incorporation of all types of uncertainty is made conceptually straightforward, by designing an appropriate prior model space, upon which the results are dependent, from which to draw candidate models. We have tested the approach on a salt dome target, over which three data sets had been obtained; wide-angle seismic refraction, MT and gravity data. We have considered the data sets together using an empirically measured uncertain physical relationship connecting the three different model parameters: seismic velocity, density, and resistivity, and we have indicated the value of a joint approach, rather than considering individual parameter models. The results were probability density functions over the model parameters, together with a halite probability map. The emulators give a considerable speed advantage over running the full simulator codes, and we consider their use to have great potential in the development of geophysical statistical constraint methods.

Magnetotellurics (MT) uses a frequency-dependent impedance tensor estimated from the spectra of associated time-varying horizontal electric and magnetic fields measured at the Earth's surface to image the sub-surface of the Earth. Most current methods use Fourier transform based procedures to estimate power spectral densities and, therefore, assume that the signals are stationary over the record length. Stationarity in geomagnetic data, however, is not always ensured given the variety of source mechanism causing the geomagnetic variations at different time and spatial scales. Additional complication and bias may arise from the presence of noise in the recorded electric and magnetic file data. Sophisticated MT data processing account for a potential bias through windowing of the time series as well as robust estimates of the impedance. We explore a new heuristic method for dealing with the non-stationarity of MT time series based on empirical mode decomposition. It is a dynamic time series analysis method, in which complicated data sets can be decomposed into a finite and small number of simple intrinsic mode functions. In this paper, we use the empirical mode decomposition method to decompose MT data into intrinsic mode functions and calculate the instantaneous frequencies and spectra to determine the impedance tensor. We investigate the reliability of the impedance estimates on synthetic data by comparing the results to those obtained by analytical methods. Finally, we apply our processing scheme to data measured from the Costa Rica subduction zone, and compare the results from our new method to the frequently-used BIRRP processing method.
