Incomplete cancellation of collinear antiparallel spins gives rise to ferrimagnetism. Even if the oppositely polarized spins are owing to the equal number of a single magnetic element having the same valence state, in principle, a ferrimagnetic state can still arise from the crystallographic inequivalence of the host ions. However, experimental identification of such a state as "ferrimagnetic"is not straightforward because of the often tiny magnitude expected for M and the requirement for a sophisticated technique to differentiate similar magnetic sites. We report a synchrotron-based resonant x-ray investigation at the Fe L2,3 edges on an epitaxial film of CaFe2O4, which exhibits two magnetic phases with similar energies. We find that while one phase of CaFe2O4 is antiferromagnetic, the other one is ferrimagnetic with an antiparallel arrangement of an equal number of spins between two distinct crystallographic sites with very similar local coordination environments. Our results further indicate two distinct origins of an overall minute M; one is intrinsic, from distinct Fe3+ sites, and the other one is extrinsic, arising from defective Fe2+ likely forming weakly coupled ferrimagnetic clusters. These two origins are uncorrelated and have very different coercive fields. Hence, this work provides a direct experimental demonstration of ferrimagnetism solely due to crystallographic inequivalence of the Fe3+ as the origin of the weak M of CaFe2O4., The resonant x-ray diffraction experiments were performed at the X11MA beamline in the Swiss Light Source under Proposal No. 20191307 and at the BL17SU in the SPring-8 under Proposal No. 20200012. Ligand-capped nanocrystals (NCs) of lead halide perovskites, foremost fully inorganic CsPbX3 NCs, are the latest generation of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots. They offer a set of compelling characteristics—large absorption cross section, as well as narrow, fast, and efficient photoluminescence with long exciton coherence times—rendering them attractive for applications in light-emitting devices and quantum optics. Monodisperse and shape-uniform, broadly size-tunable, scalable, and robust NC samples are paramount for unveiling their basic photophysics, as well as for putting them into use. Thus far, no synthesis method fulfilling all these requirements has been reported. For instance, long-chain zwitterionic ligands impart the most durable surface coating, but at the expense of reduced size uniformity of the as-synthesized colloid. In this work, we demonstrate that size-selective precipitation of CsPbBr3 NCs coated with a long-chain sulfobetaine ligand, namely, 3-(N,N-dimethyloctadecylammonio)-propanesulfonate, yields monodisperse and sizable fractions (>100 mg inorganic mass) with the mean NC size adjustable in the range between 3.5 and 16 nm and emission peak wavelength between 479 and 518 nm. We find that all NCs exhibit an oblate cuboidal shape with the aspect ratio of 1.2 × 1.2 × 1. We present a theoretical model (effective mass/k·p) that accounts for the anisotropic NC shape and describes the size dependence of the first and second excitonic transition in absorption spectra and explains room-temperature exciton lifetimes. We also show that uniform zwitterion-capped NCs readily form long-range ordered superlattices upon solvent evaporation. In comparison to more conventional ligand systems (oleic acid and oleylamine), supercrystals of zwitterion-capped NCs exhibit larger domain sizes and lower mosaicity. Both kinds of supercrystals exhibit superfluorescence at cryogenic temperatures—accelerated collective emission arising from the coherent coupling of the emitting dipoles. ISSN:2374-7951

NaOsO3 has recently attracted significant attention for the strong coupling between its electronic band structure and magnetic ordering. Here, we used time-resolved magnetic x-ray diffraction to determine the timescale of the photoinduced antiferromagnetic dynamics in NaOsO3. Our measurements are consistent with a sub-100 fs melting of the antiferromagnetic long-range order that occurs significantly faster than the lattice dynamics as monitored by the transient change in intensity of selected Bragg structural reflections, which instead show a decrease of intensity on a timescale of several ps.

Nanocrystal (NC) self-assembly is a versatile platform for materials engineering at the mesoscale. The NC shape anisotropy leads to structures not observed with spherical NCs. This work presents a broad structural diversity in multicomponent, long-range ordered superlattices (SLs) comprising highly luminescent cubic CsPbBr3 NCs (and FAPbBr3 NCs) coassembled with the spherical, truncated cuboid, and disk-shaped NC building blocks. CsPbBr3 nanocubes combined with Fe3O4 or NaGdF4 spheres and truncated cuboid PbS NCs form binary SLs of six structure types with high packing density; namely, AB2, quasi-ternary ABO3, and ABO6 types as well as previously known NaCl, AlB2, and CuAu types. In these structures, nanocubes preserve orientational coherence. Combining nanocubes with large and thick NaGdF4 nanodisks results in the orthorhombic SL resembling CaC2 structure with pairs of CsPbBr3 NCs on one lattice site. Also, we implement two substrate-free methods of SL formation. Oil-in-oil templated assembly results in the formation of binary supraparticles. Self-assembly at the liquid–air interface from the drying solution cast over the glyceryl triacetate as subphase yields extended thin films of SLs. Magnetic patterns can be controlled globally using fields or spin polarized currents. In contrast, the local control of the magnetization on the nanometer length scale remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate how magnetic domain patterns in a Tm-doped yttrium iron garnet (Tm:YIG) thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be permanently and locally imprinted by high intensity photon pulses of a hard x-ray transient grating (XTG). Micromagnetic simulations provide a qualitative understanding of the observed changes in the orientation of magnetic domains in Tm:YIG and XTG-induced changes. Optical-domain Transient Grating (TG) spectroscopy is a versatile background-free four-wave-mixing technique used to probe vibrational, magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom in the time domain. The newly developed coherent X-ray Free Electron Laser sources allow its extension to the X-ray regime. Xrays offer multiple advantages for TG: their large penetration depth allows probing the bulk properties of materials, their element-specificity can address core-excited states, and their short wavelengths create excitation gratings with unprecedented momentum transfer and spatial resolution. We demonstrate for the first time TG excitation in the hard X-ray range at 7.1 keV. In Bismuth Germanate (BGO), the nonresonant TG excitation generates coherent optical phonons detected as a function of time by diffraction of an optical probe pulse. This experiment demonstrates the ability to probe bulk properties of materials and paves the way for ultrafast coherent four-wave-mixing techniques using X-ray probes and involving nanoscale TG spatial periods., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Atomically defined assemblies of dye molecules (such as H and J aggregates) have been of interest for more than 80 years because of the emergence of collective phenomena in their optical spectra1,2,3, their coherent long-range energy transport, their conceptual similarity to natural light-harvesting complexes4,5, and their potential use as light sources and in photovoltaics. Another way of creating versatile and controlled aggregates that exhibit collective phenomena involves the organization of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals into long-range-ordered superlattices6. Caesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals7,8,9 are promising building blocks for such superlattices, owing to the high oscillator strength of bright triplet excitons10, slow dephasing (coherence times of up to 80 picoseconds) and minimal inhomogeneous broadening of emission lines11,12. So far, only single-component superlattices with simple cubic packing have been devised from these nanocrystals13. Here we present perovskite-type (ABO3) binary and ternary nanocrystal superlattices, created via the shape-directed co-assembly of steric-stabilized, highly luminescent cubic CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (which occupy the B and/or O lattice sites), spherical Fe3O4 or NaGdF4 nanocrystals (A sites) and truncated-cuboid PbS nanocrystals (B sites). These ABO3 superlattices, as well as the binary NaCl and AlB2 superlattice structures that we demonstrate, exhibit a high degree of orientational ordering of the CsPbBr3 nanocubes. They also exhibit superfluorescence—a collective emission that results in a burst of photons with ultrafast radiative decay (22 picoseconds) that could be tailored for use in ultrabright (quantum) light sources. The aggregation and the photophysics of a water soluble perylenediimide (PDI) derivative that features two bromine substituents in the bay positions has been probed. Non-fluorescent aggregates were found to be present at concentrations of 1.0 × 10-5 M. In situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements and complementary molecular modeling showed the presence of PDI aggregates. In their singlet excited states, the PDI aggregates are characterized by distinct transient fingerprints and rapid deactivation, as revealed by pump-probe experiments on the femto-, pico-, nano-, and microsecond timescales. The product of this deactivation is a PDI triplet excited state. The efficiency of the triplet formation depends on the concentration, and hence on the degree of aggregation. Notably, for PDI concentrations in the range of the critical micelle concentration, the efficiency of intersystem crossing is close to zero. In short, we have demonstrated, for the first time, aggregation-induced formation of triplet excited states for PDI derivatives.

Epitaxial growth techniques enable nearly defect free heterostructures with coherent interfaces, which are of utmost importance for high performance electronic devices. While high-vacuum technology-based growth techniques are state-of-the art, here we pursue a purely solution processed approach to obtain nanocrystals with eptaxially coherent and quasi-lattice matched inorganic ligand shells. Octahedral metal-halide clusters, respectively 0-dimensional perovskites, were employed as ligands to match the coordination geometry of the PbS cubic rock-salt lattice. Different clusters (CH3NH3+)(6–x)[M(x+)Hal6](6–x)– (Mx+ = Pb(II), Bi(III), Mn(II), In(III), Hal = Cl, I) were attached to the nanocrystal surfaces via a scalable phase transfer procedure. The ligand attachment and coherence of the formed PbS/ligand core/shell interface was confirmed by combining the results from transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. The development of carbon-based membrane adsorbent materials for water treatment has become a hot topic in recent years. Among them, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are promising materials because of its large surface area, high aspect ratio, great chemical reactivity, and low cost. In this work, free-standing CNT adsorbents are fabricated from chemically cross-linked single-walled CNTs. We have demonstrated that by controlling the degree of cross-linking, the nanostructure, porous features, and specific surface area of the resulting materials can be tuned, in turn allowing the control of the adsorption capacities and the improvement of the adsorption performance. The cross-linked CNT adsorbents exhibit a notably selective sorption ability and good recyclability for removal of organics and oils from contaminated water.

The oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere is there primarily because of water oxidation performed by photosynthetic organisms using solar light and one specialized protein complex, photosystem II (PSII). High-resolution imaging of the PSII ‘core’ complex shows the ideal co-localization of multi-chromophore light-harvesting antennas with the functional reaction centre. Man-made systems are still far from replicating the complexity of PSII, as the majority of PSII mimetics have been limited to photocatalytic dyads based on a 1:1 ratio of a light absorber, generally a Ru–polypyridine complex, with a water oxidation catalyst. Here we report the self-assembly of multi-perylene-bisimide chromophores (PBI) shaped to function by interaction with a polyoxometalate water-oxidation catalyst (Ru4POM). The resulting [PBI]5Ru4POM complex shows a robust amphiphilic structure and dynamic aggregation into large two-dimensional paracrystalline domains, a redshifted light-harvesting efficiency of >40% and favourable exciton accumulation, with a peak quantum efficiency using ‘green’ photons (λ > 500 nm). The modularity of the building blocks and the simplicity of the non-covalent chemistry offer opportunities for innovation in artificial photosynthesis. In native photosystem II (PSII), multi-chromophore antennas surround the reaction centre, capturing light and triggering the quantized (four-flashes) photo-oxidation of water to oxygen. The PSII ‘quantasome’ is the most efficient photo-electrolyser built so far. An artificial quantasome has now been developed; it is specifically designed for oxygen evolution by self-assembling light-harvesting-perylene bisimides with a ruthenium polyoxometalate water-oxidation catalyst.

Some new considerations on the model-free shape retrieval of inorganic nanocrystals based on the evaluation of averaged dummy atom models obtained from small-angle X-ray scattering data are presented. Scattering curves for shapes commonly found in inorganic nanocrystal systems were computed, from which dummy atom models were reconstructed using DAMMIN and DAMAVER. Cross sectional analysis methods were applied to allow a quantitative interpretation of these models, where special focus was directed towards the measurement of discrete model dimensions. By a quantitative comparison of the obtained models with the initial geometries, the limits of the proposed evaluation techniques were tested. Further, the proposed methods were utilized to study the influence of the accessible scattering vector as well as the effect of increasing size distributions on models retrieved by DAMMIN and DAMAVER. The results confirm the usefulness of these ab initio shape-retrieval methods for slightly polydisperse systems. Finally, the practicability of the proposed techniques is demonstrated on an ensemble of chemically synthesized colloidal bismuth nanocrystals.

Hydrogen-bonded pigments are remarkably stable high-crystal lattice energy organic solids. Here a lesser-known family of compounds, the epindolidiones, which demonstrates electronic transport with extraordinary stability, even in highly demanding aqueous environments, is reported. Hole mobilities in the range 0.05-1 cm2 V-1 s-1 can be achieved, with lower electron mobilities of up to 0.1 cm2 V-1 s-1. To help understand charge transport in epindolidiones, X-ray diffraction is used to solve the crystal structure of 2,8-difluoroepindolidione and 2,8-dichloroepindolidione. Both derivatives crystallize with a linear-chain H-bonding lattice featuring two-dimensional ?-? stacking. Powder diffraction indicates that the unsubstituted epindolidione has very similar crystallinity. All types of epindolidiones measured here display strong low-energy optical emission originating from excimeric states, which coexists with higher-energy fluorescence. This can be exploited in light-emitting diodes, which show the same hybrid singlet and low-energy excimer electroluminescence. Low-voltage FETs are fabricated with epindolidione, which operate reliably under repeated cyclic tests in different ionic solutions within the pH range 3-10 without degradation. Finally, in order to overcome the insolubility of epindolidiones in organic solvents, a chemical procedure is devised to allow solution-processing via the introduction of suitable thermolabile solubilizing groups. This work shows the versatile potential of epindolidione pigments for electronics applications. Epindolidiones are H-bonded organic pigment semiconductors with excellent operational stability, including in aqueous media. Their crystal structure, electrochemical properties, and photophysics, which are dominated by excimeric effects, are reported. Transistor and light-emitting devices are demonstrated. Routes for solution processing of epindolidiones using transient solubilizing groups are explored.

Herein we report on the synthesis and properties of 6,6′-dithienylindigo (DTI), as well as its solubilized N,N′-di(tert-butoxy carbonyl) derivative (tBOC-DTI). tBOC-DTI can be electropolymerized and thermally interconverted into films of poly(DTI). Thin films of DTI afford quasi-reversible 2-electron reduction and oxidation electrochemistry, and demonstrate ambipolar charge transport in organic field-effect transistors with a hole mobility of up to 0.11 cm2 V−1 s−1 and an electron mobility of up to 0.08 cm2 V−1 s−1. Operation of the p-channel shows excellent air stability, with minimal degradation over a 60 day stressing study. Poly(DTI) can be reversibly oxidized and reduced over hundreds of cycles while remaining immobilized on the working electrode surface, and additionally shows a pronounced photoconductivity response in a diode device geometry. This work shows the potential of extended indigo derivatives for organic electronic applications, demonstrating impressive stability under ambient conditions.

A detailed understanding of confinement and desolvation of ions in electrically charged carbon nanopores is the key to enable advanced electrochemical energy storage and water treatment technologies. Here, we present the synergistic combination of experimental data from in situ small-angle X-ray scattering with Monte Carlo simulations of length-scale-dependent ion arrangement. In our approach, the simulations are based on the actual carbon nanopore structure and the global ion concentrations in the electrodes, both obtained from experiments. A combination of measured and simulated scattering data provides compelling evidence of partial desolvation of Cs+ and Cl− ions in water even in mixed micro–mesoporous carbons with average pore size well above 1 nm. A tight attachment of the aqueous solvation shell effectively prevents complete desolvation in carbons with subnanometre average pore size. The tendency of counter-ions to change their local environment towards high confinement with increasing voltage determines conclusively the performance of supercapacitor electrodes. The complexity of electrochemical storage systems makes it difficult to study ion dynamics between electrodes and electrolytes. Here the authors present an approach combining in situ X-ray scattering and Monte Carlo simulation for a comprehensive understanding of ion confinement and desolvation in nanoporous carbon supercapacitors.

Light driven water oxidation is a key step in artificial photosynthesis, aimed at splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen with sunlight. In such process, the interactions between a photosensitizer (PS) and a water oxidation catalyst (WOC) play a crucial role in the rates of photoinduced electron transfers, determining the overall quantum efficiency of the system. In this work, by means of Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) we investigate the nature of the aggregates between ruthenium polypyridine photosensitizers (Rubpy and Ru4dend) and a tetraruthenium polyoxometalate (Ru4POM) water oxidation catalyst. Aggregate scattering is confirmed by the strong intensity-increase in the low-q regime, whereas the power law-fit of this region show slopes between −3 and −4, suggesting globular and porous aggregates. The aggregation of a water soluble, dicationic perylene bisimide derivative was studied by means of absorption and emission spectroscopies, X-ray and neutron scattering techniques as well as electron microscopy. The results provide evidence for the existence of higher order molecular aggregates in solution, potentially utilizable in device fabrication as super molecular building blocks.

Summary Self-assembly of light-harvesting antenna (multichromophoric) systems is a typical feature of natural photosynthetic organisms, aimed at maximizing light absorption and solar energy conversion. Inspired by this concept, self-assembly strategies for integrating light-harvesting units are highly desirable objectives in supramolecular chemistry. Here, we demonstrate that self-assembly of light-harvesting dendrimers based on Ru(II) and Os(II) polypyridine complexes leads to aggregation-induced energy transfer. This phenomenon is proposed to be a result of inter-dendrimer electronic interactions involving electronic energy donors and acceptors of different dendrimers and suggests that the title dendrimer shows features reminiscent of the energy migration patterns occurring among LH1 and LH2 assemblies of natural systems. Even in consideration of the reported use of similar dendrimers for photochemical water oxidation, the aggregation-induced energy transfer reported here, as well as the self-assembly of the light-harvesting dendrimers itself, can be useful for designing new integrated systems for solar fuel production.

Attaining thermodynamic stability of colloids in a broad range of concentrations has long been a major thrust in the field of colloidal ligand-capped semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs). This challenge is particularly pressing for the novel NCs of cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3; X = Cl, Br) owing to their highly dynamic and labile surfaces. Herein, we demonstrate that soy lecithin, a mass-produced natural phospholipid, serves as a tightly binding surface-capping ligand suited for a high-reaction yield synthesis of CsPbX3 NCs (6–10 nm) and allowing for long-term retention of the colloidal and structural integrity of CsPbX3 NCs in a broad range of concentrations—from a few ng/mL to >400 mg/mL (inorganic core mass). The high colloidal stability achieved with this long-chain zwitterionic ligand can be rationalized with the Alexander–De Gennes model that considers the increased particle–particle repulsion due to branched chains and ligand polydispersity. A new setup for picosecond pump–probe X-ray scattering at the Austrian SAXS beamline at Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste is presented. Details of the specific implementation are discussed and results of a first transient-heating experiment are shown., A new setup for picosecond pump–probe X-ray scattering at the Austrian SAXS beamline at Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste is presented. A high-power/high-repetion-rate laser has been installed on-site, delivering UV/VIS/IR femto­second-pulses in-sync with the storage ring. Data acquisition is achieved by gating a multi-panel detector, capable of discriminating the single X-ray pulse in the dark-gap of the Elettra hybrid filling mode. Specific aspects of laser- and detection-synchronization, on-line beam steering as well protocols for spatial and temporal overlap of laser and X-ray beam are also described. The capabilities of the setup are demonstrated by studying transient heat-transfer in an In/Al/GaAs superlattice structure and results are confirmed by theoretical calculations.

The success of the colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) field is rooted in the precise synthetic control of QD size, shape, and composition, enabling electronically well-defined functional nanomaterials that foster fundamental science and motivate diverse fields of applications. While the exploitation of the strong confinement regime has been driving commercial and scientific interest in InP or CdSe QDs, such a regime has still not been thoroughly explored and exploited for lead-halide perovskite QDs, mainly due to a so far insufficient chemical stability and size monodispersity of perovskite QDs smaller than about 7 nm. Here, we demonstrate chemically stable strongly confined 5 nm CsPbBr3 colloidal QDs via a postsynthetic treatment employing didodecyldimethylammonium bromide ligands. The achieved high size monodispersity (7.5% ± 2.0%) and shape-uniformity enables the self-assembly of QD superlattices with exceptional long-range order, uniform thickness, an unusual rhombic packing with an obtuse angle of 104°, and narrow-band cyan emission. The enhanced chemical stability indicates the promise of strongly confined perovskite QDs for solution-processed single-photon sources, with single QDs showcasing a high single-photon purity of 73% and minimal blinking (78% “on” fraction), both at room temperature., ACS Nano, 17 (3), ISSN:1936-0851, ISSN:1936-086X

The interface of complex oxide heterostructures sets the stage for various electronic and magnetic phenomena. Many of these collective effects originate from the precise structural arrangement at the interface that in turn governs local spin- and charge interactions. Currently, interfacial straining, so the naturally evolving compressive or tensile strain by mismatch of the neighboring lattices, is the most common route towards engineering collective material properties -- yet, significant progress might require exploration of entirely new approaches towards interface correlations. In this work, we turn the page by looking at the interface of a perfectly relaxed, unstrained heterostructure, where we identify a highly ordered Moire lattice at an inherently disordered SrTiO$_3$ (STO) - LSAT interface. Using high-resolution reciprocal space mapping via synchrotron based X-Ray diffraction, we find long-ranged ordered supercells of 106/107 unit cells of STO/LSAT, caused by lattice relaxation through high-temperature annealing. Model calculations confirm the experimentally observed scattering phenomena, showing that cross-interfacial bonding is locally different at the Moire-overlap points. Notably, the presence of such super-ordered structures in the family of 2D electron gas systems sets the ideal conditions for Moire-motif tuned plasmonic responses and ferroelectric super-crystallinity and opens up the possibility to novel interface functionalities in these simple perovskites., 17 pages, 3 figures

The correlation between electronic and crystal structures of 1T-TiSe2 in the charge density wave (CDW) state is studied by x-ray diffraction. Three families of reflections are used to probe atomic displacements and the orbital asymmetry in Se. Two distinct onset temperatures are found, TCDW and a lower T* indicative for an onset of Se out-of-plane atomic displacements. T* coincides with a DC resistivity maximum and the onset of the proposed gyrotropic electronic structure. However, no indication for chirality is found. When nanocrystals self assemble into ordered superstructures they form functional solids that may inherit the electronical properties of the single nanocrystals. To what extent these properties are enhanced depends on the positional and orientational order of the nanocrystals within the superstructure. Here, the formation of micrometer-sized free-standing supercrystals of faceted 20 nm Bi nanocrystals is investigated. The self-assembly process, induced by nonsolvent into solvent diffusion, is probed in situ by synchrotron X-ray scattering. The diffusion-gradient is identified as the critical parameter for controlling the supercrystal-structure as well as the alignment of the supercrystals with respect to the substrate. Monte Carlo simulations confirm the positional order of the nanocrystals within these superstructures and reveal a unique orientation phase: the nanocrystal shape, determined by the atomic Bi crystal structure, induces a total of 6 global orientations based on facet-to-facet alignment. This parallel alignment of facets is a prerequisite for optimized electronic and optical properties within designed nanocrystal solids.
