Incorporating scientific knowledge of climate into urban planning is a major challenge for the healthy growth of a city. This chapter presents a proposal for planning local climate action based on urban climatic maps (UCMaps). The UCMaps are an accessible and easy support tool for planners, architects, and local government to make the right decision in the planning process. Based on the UCMaps, we recommend a set of climatic guidelines to combat the phenomenon of the Urban Heat Island in a city located on the northeast coast of Brazil. These maps identify the key climate areas in terms of UHI behaviour and excess heat stress based on climatopoes, which are areas of “special local climates” or “potential climate response” influenced by the urban morphology, land use and ventilation conditions. The relationship between UCMaps and Master Plan is also presented. With the UCMap, urban policymakers have various urbanistic interventions, measures, and strategies available to combat the adverse effects of the UHI and preserve the climate-related ecosystem services.

Atualmente as transformações impostas pela ação do homem têm alterado os elementos e características do clima na escala local. Estudos de clima urbano em cidades de pequeno porte (escala local) podem ajudar a responder indagações que persistem na climatologia urbana: a partir de que porte ou grau hierárquico uma cidade brasileira passa a oferecer condições de geração de um clima urbano? Quais as relações entre os atributos geourbanos nessa definição? Dessa forma, o objetivo dessa pesquisa foi de analisar as influências das características geourbanas na variação da temperatura do ar e identificar a variabilidade temporal e espacial das ilhas de calor urbanas na cidade de Ceres – Goiás (ICU). Para tanto, foram instalados quatro termo-higrômetros (Modelo EL-USB-2-LCD), dois metros acima do solo, protegidos por miniabrigos meteorológicos. Os resultados evidenciaram que as características geourbanas influenciaram na variação da temperatura do ar e na intensidade das ICUs. O AP 6, localizado no centro da cidade, área de maior tráfego de veículos, com prédios e casas e área toda pavimentada foi frequentemente mais quente que os outros pontos durante o dia (46,6%) e durante a noite (56%). As ilhas de calor de maiores intensidades foram observadas no período diurno, com máxima de 7,5ºC, enquanto que no período noturno a máxima foi de 3ºC.

Este estudo avalia a Ilha de Calor Urbana (ICU) em Aracaju com base numa Rede Climatológica Urbana (RCU). Esta rede seguiu princípios e conceitos definidos para as áreas urbanas, particularmente no que concerne às questões relacionadas às escalas climáticas, à exposição dos equipamentos, à morfologia urbana e aos metadados. Os presentes resultados atualizaram a intensidade da ICU de Aracaju confrontando a tendência encontrada nos estudos iniciais. Embora, observou-se a máxima intensidade da ICU de 5,5°C, em termos médios a ICU tanto diurna como noturna não foi expressiva (entorno de 0,5ºC) refletindo um predomínio de intensidades baixas (diferenças térmicas de até 2ºC), cujas frequências superaram os 85% ao longo do ano. A RCU ajudou compreender melhor o impacto da ICU no ambiente disponibilizando informações climáticas úteis no planejamento da cidade., This study evaluated the Urban Heat Island (UHI) in Aracaju based on Urban Climatological Network (UCN). This network observed principles and concepts defined for urban areas, particularly concerning matters that relate to climatic scales, sitting and exposure, urban morphology and metadata. The current findings updated UHI’s intensities Aracaju refuting the trend found out in previous studies. Although, it was observed maximum intensity of UHI up to 5,5 ºC, both daytime and nighttime UHI was not significant in average terms (about at 0,5ºC) reflecting the prevalence of low intensities (thermal difference up to 2ºC) whose frequencies exceeded 85% annually. UCN helped to understand better the UHI’s impacts on environmental providing climatic information useful to urban planning.

Characterising the spatio-temporal variability of the Urban Heat Island intensity (UHII) is of utmost importance to understand processes related to air pollution dispersion and thermal comfort. However, this feature is still under-researched in most global cities due to instrument limitations or lack of expertise. This study aims at investigating the influences of standard and subclasses of Local Climate Zones (LCZ) on the behaviour of the UHI in a Brazilian city, using LCZs classification/sub-classification and in situ near-surface air temperature observations. Cluster analysis applied to daily meteorological data split the study period into five groups with similar weather characteristics. Each cluster was dominated by a combination of weather systems acting over the region which, in turn, determined the strength of the UHII. The overall diurnal UHII was strong during the nights and early mornings, with mean maximum values of 6.0 °C, and around 0 °C or negative during the rest of the day. The largest UHII (11.0 °C) was registered under anticyclone conditions, whilst the smallest ones (around 0 °C) were always observed under overcast and rainy conditions regulated by the passage of troughs, cold fronts and mesoscale complex systems. The spatial distribution of the nocturnal UHII based on the sampled and predicted LCZ temperature analysis showed that the central areas were substantially warmer than the suburban and rural areas. The introduction of six LCZ sub-classes revealed to be a suitable mapping approach to describe the land use and cover and evaluate the air temperature field in areas with mixed urban fabric . The LCZ map helped identify key climatic areas which could be used in planning strategies to target the UHI effects and create both aesthetically pleasant and healthy cities.

The common idea that the sea breeze is a phenomenon that is always beneficial to the thermal from point of view is questioned in this study, since the sea breeze front (SBF) development is related with warmer days in the Sergipe region, located in the northeastern coast of Brazil. For this reason, the first climatology of the SBF and its potential implications on meteorological conditions were presented by using remote sensing (GOES-13 satellite image) and surface meteorological data. Results showed daily performance of the SBF: onset at 12:00 UTC and cessation at 19:00 UTC corresponding to a duration of 7 h, mean strength of 3.6 ms−1, and maximum inland penetration of 94 km from coast. In addition, we also observed SBF passage is related with an average increase in solar radiation (84 W m−2), temperature (1 °C), and a decrease in relative humidity (10%) and dew point temperature (1 °C). We hypothesize that, in certain circumstances, the SBF development is not beneficial for human thermal comfort in the Sergipe region.

As emissões de poluentes nas vias com alta densidade de tráfego notabilizaram- -se como uma das potenciais fontes de poluição do ar nas cidades. Com base em simulações com o modelo de dispersão atmosférica (CAL3QHC), foram encontradas na área central de Aracaju concentrações de MP10 máxima de até 120 μg m-3, que violam as normas nacionais e, portanto, têm possíveis efeitos prejudiciais à saúde humana. Além disso, este estudo demonstrou que a redução de 60% do fluxo de tráfego de automóveis nas vias de circulação mais congestionadas pode reduzir em até 70 μg m-3 as concentrações de MP10 e que o aumento de 9% de árvores pode remover 16,8 kg anuais de MP10, com benefício econômico de R$ 390,00 reais usando a ferramenta I-Tree Canopy. Os resultados simulados podem ser um importante suporte para políticas e práticas na implementação de uma rede densa de monitoramento da qualidade do ar na cidade., Emissions of pollutants from high-traffic density have become a potential source of air pollution in cities. Based on simulations with the atmospheric dispersion model (CAL3QHC), concentrations of MP10 maximum up to 120 μg m-3 in the central area of Aracaju were found, which violates the national standards and, therefore, with possible harmful effects on human health. It has been shown that the reduction of 60% volume of automobile in the roadways congested can reduce the concentrations of MP10 up to 70 μg m-3 as well as the trees increasing of 9% can remove 16.8 kg annual MP10 with the economic benefit of R$ 390.00, using the I-Tree Canopy tool. The simulated results can be an important source of support for policies and practices in the implementing denser air quality monitoring in the city.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar, a partir de dados do satélite Landsat - 5, o padrão multitemporal e espacial das anomalias térmicas na cidade de Iporá - Goiás. Para tanto, foram utilizadas imagens multiespectrais (banda termal do satélite Landsat 5), dos anos de 1984 a 2011. Para o processamento das imagens foram desenvolvidos modelos matemáticos por meio da ferramenta Model Maker do software Erdas Imagine 11. Os resultados evidenciaram que: 1 - com a utilização das anomalias térmicas, os mapas ficaram homogêneos, o que possibilitou comparação temporal; 2 - Anomalias térmicas máximas de superfície ocorreram em áreas de pouca urbanização, com solo exposto; 3 - O maior número de anomalias positivas ocorreu nas áreas de baixa urbanização, com solos expostos. Enquanto que nas áreas mais urbanizadas com presença de vegetação e próximas a superfície de água, ocorreu a maior quantidade de anomalias negativas; 4 - Nos pontos B, E, F e H foram observadas tendências estatisticamente significativas., The aim of this study was to analyze, from satellite data of Landsat - 5, the multi-temporal and spatial pattern of temperature anomalies in the city of Iporá - Goiás. To this end, were used multispectral images (thermal band of Landsat 5 satellite), from the years 1984-2011. For the processing of images were developed mathematical models using the Model Maker of the software Erdas Imagine 11. The results showed that: 1 - with the use of thermal anomalies, the maps were homogeneous, allowing temporal comparison; 2 - Maximum surface thermal anomalies occurred in areas of little urbanization, with exposed soil; 3 - The highest number of positive anomalies occurred in areas of low urbanization, with exposed soil. While in the more urbanized areas with presence of vegetation and nearby surface water, it was the largest amount of negative anomalies; 4 - In points B, E, F and H statistically significant trends were observed.

In this study, an evaluation of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) and Park Cool Island (PCI) intensities in Aracaju, North-Eastern Brazil, was performed. The basis of our evaluation is a 2-year dataset from the urban climatological network installed with the principles and concepts defined for urban areas related to climatic scales, sitting and exposure, urban morphology, and metadata. The current findings update UHI intensities in Aracaju refuting the trend registered in previous studies. On average, the UHI was more intense in the cool season (1.3 °C) than in hot season (0.5 °C), which was caused by wind speed decrease. In relation to the PCI, mitigation of high air temperatures of 1.5–2 °C on average was registered in the city. However, the urban park is not always cooler than the surrounding built environment. Consistent long-term monitoring in the cities is very important to provide more accurate climatic information about the UHI and PCI to be applied in urban planning properly, e.g., to provide pleasant thermal comfort in urban spaces.

This paper goal to analyse the topoclimatic contrasts in urban and suburban space in Aracaju city. The result was established by comparing the data of temperature and relative humidity from urban weather stations with the data from the weather station, which are of a more suburban character. The relative frequency of occurrence of differences in maximum temperature higher than zero (%> 0), exceeding it in 96% of the times in the city centre and about 100% frequency during late morning until evening. Furthermore, the center station recorded 3,6oC on average greater than the airport station. The results indicts significant evidence of the thermal and hygrometric differences between the urban and periurban area, leading to substantial evidence of the occurrence of heat islands in the mentioned in Aracaju.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar os contrastes térmicos e higrométricos espaciais, à escala topoclimática, no espaço urbano e periurbano da cidade de Aracaju. Neste estudo encontrou evidências significativas de contrastes topoclimáticos no espaço intraurbano, o que leva a fortes indícios de ocorrência de ilhas de calor nesta cidade. Isto foi possível mediante o confronto de dados oriundos dos pontos de observação, distribuídos em vários pontos da cidade através dos transectos móveis. Durante o segmento temporal da investigação, foi notória a diferença térmica e higrométrica entre a área urbana e periurbana. No campo térmico foi possível notar ilhas de calor de fortes magnitudes, que chegaram a 7,5ºC em contraste com a área envolvente, enquanto que campo higrométrico os contrastes foram mais acentuados, com diferenças de 20%. Além disso, a morfologia urbana e os contrastes topoclimáticos estão extremamente relacionados. Neste sentido, a fim de estudar o desenvolvimento do clima urbano de Aracaju, uma nova rede urbana de instrumentos meteorológicos devem ser tomados em consideração, devido à ausência de qualquer histórico de registros de temperatura e umidade relativa em áreas industriais, no centro da cidade ou em parques verdes. Uma rede articulada de estações meteorológicas urbanas seria uma oportunidade para compreensão de vários fenômenos climáticos e de seus efeitos sobre a população., The present study is aimed to analyze the thermal and hygrometric contrasts, topoclimatic scale in urban and periurban space of the city of Aracaju. The study found significant evidence of topo-climatic contrasts in intra-urban space, leading to substantial evidence of the occurrence of heat islands in the mentioned city. The result was established by comparing of temperature and relative humidity from observation points distributed in various parts of the city was compared using a mobile transect. During the time period of research, the thermal and hygrometric differences within urban area and between the urban and periurban area of city became clear. Se han hallado significativas evidencias de contrastes topoclimáticos en la zona intraurbana, lo que lleva a fuertes indicios de la ocurrencia de islas de calor en la ciudad. Ello ha sido posible mediante el confronto de datos oriundos de los puntos de observación distribuidos en varias ubicaciones de la ciudad a través de transectos móviles. Durante el espacio de tiempo de la investigación, fue notoria la diferencia térmica e higrométrica entre el área urbana y periurbana. En el campo térmico fue posible notar islas de calor de fuertes magnitudes, donde alcanzaron los 7,5ºC en contraste con el área alrededor, mientras que en el campo higrométrico los contrastes fueron más acentuados, con diferencias del 20%. Además, la morfología urbana y los contrastes topoclimáticos están extremamente relacionados. Siendo así, con el propósito de estudiar el desarrollo del clima urbano de Aracaju, una nueva red urbana de instrumentos meteorológicos deben ser llevados en consideración debido a la ausencia de cualquier histórico de registros de temperatura y humedad relativa en áreas industriales, en el centro de la ciudad o en parques verdes. Una red articulada de estaciones meteorológicas urbanas sería una oportunidad para comprender muchos fenómenos climáticos y sus efectos sobre la población. Palabras clave: clima urbano, isla de calor, campo térmico-higrométrico, Aracaju., Cette étude a pour objectif d'analyser les contrastes thermiques et hygrométriques à l'echelle topoclimatique dans le réseau urbain er péri urbain de la ville de Aracaju. Ce travail apporte des preuves significatives sur les contrastes topoclimatiques dans le réseau intra urbain ceci en raison de l'existence d'iles de chaleur dans cette ville. Ceci fut réalisable gràce à la mesure moyene de différents points d'observation effectuée dans la ville via le transecto mobile. Pendant cette période d'investigation, on a remarqué une différence thermique et hygrométrique entre la zone urbain et peri urbaine de la ville. Dans la zone thermique on a pu rencontrer des iles de chaleur à fortes magnitudes pouvant aller jusqu'a 7,5 C en contraste avec les autres zones étudiees. L'analyse hiydrometrique a montré une difference de 20% plus accentuée. De plus le rapport entre la morphologia urbaine et les contrastes topoclimatiques furent trés intime. Pour cela, afin de pouvoir étudier le developpement du climat urbain d' Aracaju, l'utilisation d'un nouvel equipement d' intruments metereologiques doit être pris en considération ceci en raison d'une absence complete de donnees historiques concernant de température et l'humidité que ce soit dans la zone industrielle,le centre ville ou dans les parcs arborés. Une ensemble coordonné de stations méteorologiques urbaines pourait être la solution opportune pour comprendre les differents phénoménes climatiques et leurs effets sur la population.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a variabilidade da temperatura do ar e umidade absoluta na área urbana da cidade de Iporá – Goiás, com o intuito de verificar os locais de maior aquecimento e menor umidade absoluta e analisar os fatores geourbanos, responsáveis por essa variação. Dessa maneira, foram utilizados oito termo-higrômetros, distribuídos na malha urbana. Foi observado que: 1 – de acordo com dendogramas, alguns pontos de mensuração se agruparam de forma semelhante, todavia a influência da variável NDVI tornou o ponto 3 destoante dos demais; 2 - na somatória das porcentagens das influências, a declividade das vertentes foi a variável geourbana que mais contribuiu para explicar os padrões da temperatura do ar, seguida pelo IU e NDVI. Enquanto que o NDVI foi a variável que mais contribuiu para explicar a variabilidade da umidade absoluta; 3 - o alcance, obtido pelos semivariogramas, apresentou grande variabilidade nos seus valores, variando de acordo com o horário do dia e com a variável observada; 4 - os padrões dos desvios da umidade absoluta permitiram afirmar que a área central, mais urbanizada, teve os maiores desvios negativos e áreas com maiores valores de NDVI e próximas aos cursos d’água apresentaram os maiores desvios positivos de umidade.
