Coupling Weyl quasiparticles and charge density waves (CDWs) can lead to fascinating band renormalization and many-body effects beyond band folding and Peierls gaps. For the quasi-one-dimensional chiral compound (TaSe4)2I with an incommensurate CDW transition at TC = 263 K, photoemission mappings thus far are intriguing due to suppressed emission near the Fermi level. Models for this unconventional behavior include axion insulator phases, correlation pseudogaps, polaron subbands, bipolaron bound states, etc. Our photoemission measurements show sharp quasiparticle bands crossing the Fermi level at T > TC, but for T < TC, these bands retain their dispersions with no Peierls or axion gaps at the Weyl points. Instead, occupied band edges recede from the Fermi level, opening a spectral gap. Our results confirm localization of quasiparticles (holes created by photoemission) is the key physics, which suppresses spectral weights over an energy window governed by incommensurate modulation and inherent phase defects of CDW.

Background: Liver cirrhosis compromises immunity against cryptococcosis, and liver transplant recipients tend to develop the disease earlier after transplantation, possibly due to unrecognized pretransplant infection. We assessed the prevalence and characteristics of cryptococcosis among liver transplant candidates and whether pre-transplant cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) can detect the disease before transplantation. Methods: We retrospectively included liver transplant candidates in a tertiary hospital during 2017–2022. Serum CrAg and pulmonary computed tomography were incorporated in routine transplant evaluation. Other investigations were done if indicated. Cryptococcosis was diagnosed by positive culture or CrAg. Risk factors for cryptococcosis were also assessed. Results: Of the 377 candidates with a median MELD-Na score of 18, 84.4% had hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Cryptococcosis was diagnosed in 10 (2.6%) candidates, by CrAg in 6, culture in 2, or both in 2. Only 3 had fever, and 3 were asymptomatic; 7 had pulmonary cryptococcosis. Of the 10 candidates with cryptococcosis, one underwent transplantation after 143-day antifungals. Of the 87 candidates undergoing liver transplantation, one (1.2%) recipient developed cryptococcosis 14 days post-transplant with negative CrAg three weeks before transplantation. Introduction: Medical errors commonly occur in medical imaging departments. These errors are frequently influenced by patient safety culture. This study aimed to develop a suitable patient safety culture assessment tool for medical imaging departments. Methods: Staff members of a teaching hospital medical imaging department were invited to complete the generic short version of the Safety Attitude Questionnaire (SAQ). Internal consistency and reliability were evaluated using Cronbach’s α. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to examine model fit. A cut-off of 60% was used to define the percentage positive responses (PPR). PPR values were compared between occupational groups. Results: A total of 300 complete responses were received and the response rate was 75.4%. In reliability analysis, the Cronbach’s α for the original 32-item SAQ was 0.941. Six subscales did not demonstrate good fit with CFA. A modified five-subscale, 22-item model (SAQ-MI) showed better fit (goodness-to-fit index ≥0.9, comparative fit index ≥ 0.9, Tucker–Lewis index ≥0.9 and root mean square error of approximation ≤0.08). The Cronbach’s α for the 22 items was 0.921. The final five subscales were safety and teamwork climate, job satisfaction, stress recognition, perception of management and working condition, with PPR of 62%, 68%, 57%, 61% and 60%, respectively. Statistically significant differences in PPR were observed between radiographers, doctors and others occupational groups. Conclusion: The modified five-factor, 22-item SAQ-MI is a suitable tool for the evaluation of patient safety culture in a medical imaging department. Differences in patient safety culture exist between occupation groups, which will inform future intervention studies.

Abstract This study evaluated the effectiveness of intraovarian platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in improving ovarian response and embryo quality in IVF patients with poor embryo quality in previous controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) cycles. 74 patients participated, with 30 in the control group and 44 in the PRP group. PRP was injected during the follicular phase for the PRP group. The control group completed two COH cycles, while the PRP group underwent COH cycles before and after the PRP injection. In the first COH cycle, there were no significant differences between groups. However, in the second COH cycle, the PRP group showed significant improvements: the number of fertilized oocytes increased (5.2 ± 3.6 vs. 3.3 ± 3.5, p = 0.011), total blastocysts (1.7 ± 1.5 vs. 0.5 ± 0.7, p

The silond catfish, Silonia silondia (Hamilton, 1822), known locally as Nga Myin Yinn, is rare in Myanmar fish markets and can fetch a high price. Efforts are being made to increase the production for domestic demand. We examined the distribution and growth of S. silondia based on catches in the Ayeyarwady River and growth records in fish farms near the river. The smaller fish were observed downstream near their nursery and the medium fish were around 1 m total length (TL) were often widespread, whereas the larger fish preferred upstream locations. Estimating the individual age from poorly defined periodic rings on the surface of otolith sections was difficult, but their microchemistry may reflect a shared nursery environment and subsequent migration throughout the entire river region. The growth curve estimates in the farmed population revealed a mean TL of 60 cm at four years, indicating that farmed fish were smaller than commercially captured wild fish. This is one of the first comprehensive studies of the river region, but more detailed surveys are needed to manage the fish resource sustainably.

Abstract Background The financial burden of tuberculosis (TB) can hinder patients and their families, creating obstacles throughout the care cascade, despite TB prevention and control being provided free of charge. In Myanmar, patients can visit private providers operating under public-private mix (PPM) schemes, where TB services (diagnosis and treatment) are typically offered at no cost. The study focused on quantifying the financial burden faced by TB patients seeking care from Myanmar's PPM providers. Methods This cross-sectional telephone survey included 695 adults seeking TB treatment [drug-susceptible TB (DS-TB) and retreatment TB] from various private providers in four states and regions with high TB burden in Myanmar. Telephone interviews were conducted in May and June 2022. Both direct and indirect costs incurred from the patient and their household perspective were valued in 2022 and estimated throughout pre- and post-TB treatment episodes. The TB-affected households were defined as experiencing catastrophic health expenditure if their expenditure due to TB exceeded 20% of their capacity to pay, as recommended by the World Health Organization. All cost data were collected in Myanmar Kyats (MMK) and converted to USD (1 USD = 1850 MMK as of July 20, 2022). Logistic regression analysis was done to identify the determinants of catastrophic health expenditure. Results The findings showed patients made a median of 7 times for clinic visits throughout their treatment, with the median total cost for the entire TB treatment being 53.4 US dollars (USD), including direct medical and testing costs (11.9 USD) and direct non-medical patient expenditure (11.6 USD). Pre-treatment costs were higher compared to post-treatment costs (the intensive phase and continuation phase). During the intensive phase, TB care cost was nearly free, but during the continuation phase, it was a median of 2.6 USD. About 34.5% of patients experienced catastrophic health expenditure due to TB treatment, with expenses exceeding 20% of their capacity to pay. This paper is devoted to developing an experimental/theoretical procedure for identifying yield criteria for powder materials. The experimental part includes several compression tests. The variation of the loading paths in these tests is achieved by deforming a plastically incompressible ring and powder material together. The description of the ring’s material behavior is not required to interpret experimental results, which is an advantage of the proposed method. The theoretical description of the test is provided using an analytical solution, which is also an advantage of the proposed method. The method is adopted for identifying Green’s yield criterion for aluminum powder. Comparison with other predictions of the yield criterion for this material is made.

Abstract Background Common cold coronaviruses (ccCoVs) and influenza virus are common infectious agents causing upper respiratory tract infections (RTIs). However, clinical symptoms, comorbidities, and health effects of ccCoV infection remain understudied. Methods A retrospective study evaluated 3,935 outpatients with acute upper RTI at a tertiary teaching hospital. The presence of ccCoV and influenza virus was determined by multiplex molecular assay. The demographic, clinical symptoms, and health outcomes were compared between patients with ccCoV (n = 205) and influenza (n = 417) infections. Multivariable logistic regression was employed to evaluate predictors and health outcomes over a one-year follow-up. Results Sore throat, nasal discharge, headache, and myalgia were more predominant in ccCoV infection; fever was common in influenza. Most patients reported moderate symptoms severity (49.8% ccCoV, 56.1% influenza). Subsequent primary care visits with symptoms of RTI within a year were comparable for both infections (27.3% ccCoV vs. 27.6% influenza). However, patients with influenza reported increased primary care visits for non-RTI episodes and all-cause hospital admission. Baseline comorbidities were associated with increased primary care visits with symptoms of RTI in either ccCoV (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.5; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.1–5.9; P = 0.034) or influenza (OR 1.9; 95% CI 1.1–3.1; P = 0.017) infections, due probably to the dysregulation of the host immune response following acute infections. In patients infected with influenza infection, dyslipidemia was a predictor for subsequent primary care visits with symptoms of RTI (unadjusted OR 1.8; 95% CI 1.0–3.0; P = 0.040). Conclusions Both influenza and ccCoV infection pose significant disease burden, especially in patients with comorbidities. The management of comorbidities should be prioritized to mitigate poor health outcomes in infected individuals.

Polypropylene (PP) fibres have primarily used to control shrinkage cracks or mitigate explosive spalling in concrete structures exposed to fire or subjected to impact/blast loads, with limited investigations on capacity improvement. This study unveils the possibility of using PP micro-fibres to improve the impact behaviour of fibre-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete (FRUHPC) columns. Results show that the addition of fibres significantly improves the impact behaviour of FRUHPC columns by shifting the failure mechanism from brittle shear to favourable flexural failure. The addition of steel or PP fibres affected the impact responses differently. Steel fibres considerably increased the peak impact force (up to 18%) while PP micro-fibres slightly increased the peak (3%–4%). FRUHPC significantly reduced the maximum mid-height displacement by up to 30% (under 20° impact) and substantially improved the displacement recovery by up to 100% (under 20° impact). FRUHPC with steel fibres significantly improved the energy absorption while those with PP micro-fibres reduced the energy absorption, which is different from the effect of PP-macro fibre reported in the literature. The optimal fibre content for micro-PP fibres is 1% due to its minimal fibre usage and low peak and residual displacement. This study highlights the potential of FRUHPC as a promising material for impact-resistant structures by creating a more favourable flexural failure mechanism, enhancing ductility and toughness under impact loading, and advancing the understanding of the role of fibres in structural performance.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent movement disorder characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction and dopaminergic neuronal loss in the substantia nigra of the midbrain. Currently, there are no effective treatments to cure or slow the progression of PD, highlighting an urgent need for new therapeutic strategies. Emerging evidence suggests that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) are potential candidates for PD treatment. This study investigates a therapeutic strategy involving FGF21 delivered via mouse MSCs in the PD model of mice treated with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) and dopaminergic SH-SY5Y cells exposed to 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+). FGF21-overexpressing MSCs were administered intranasally, either before or after MPTP treatment in mice. Intranasally delivered FGF21-overexpressing MSCs efficiently migrated to the injured substantia nigra, ameliorated MPTP-induced PD-like motor deficits, reinstated dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and nerve terminals in the striatum, as well as normalized brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and FGF21 levels. In contrast, MSCs not overexpressing FGF21 showed limited or no impact on these parameters. In a PD cellular model of MPP+-treated SH-SY5Y cells, FGF21-overexpressing MSCs showed enhanced PD cell viability. Treatment with conditioned medium from FGF21-overexpressing MSCs or exogenous FGF21 prevented cell death, reduced mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS), and restored neuroprotective proteins, including phospho-Akt, BDNF, and Bcl-2. These findings indicate that intranasal delivery of FGF21-overexpressing MSCs holds promise as a potential PD therapy, likely through activating the Akt-BDNF-Bcl-2 pathway, normalizing mitochondrial dysfunction, and mitigating dopaminergic neurodegeneration. Further clinical investigations are essential to validate these promising findings.

Porcine parainfluenza virus 1 (PPIV-1) is a paramyxovirus causing respiratory infections in pigs and has been reported worldwide. In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of PPIV-1 in pig farms in Thailand and Myanmar from January 2022 to December 2023. Nasal swab samples from pigs in Thailand (n = 1,042) and Myanmar (n = 449) were collected from clinically healthy pigs and pigs with respiratory signs. PPIV-1 detection was carried out using the L gene-specific RT-PCR assay. Our results showed that 3.65% (38/1042) and 7.57% (34/449) were positive for PPIV-1 in Thailand and Myanmar, respectively. The viruses (n = 15) were subjected to whole genome sequencing (n = 4) and F and HN gene sequencing (n = 11). Genetic and phylogenetic analyses showed that Thai PPIV-1 (n = 7) was grouped into PPIV-1 lineage II (American lineage) and closely related to American and Chinese strains. On the other hand, one Thai PPIV-1 strain (n = 1) and Myanmar PPIV-1 (n = 7) belonged to lineage I (European lineage) and was closely related to European, Hong Kong (China), and South Korean strains. Our findings suggest that PPIV-1s from both lineages (I and II) are circulating in pigs in Thailand, and PPIV-1 of lineage I is circulating in pigs in Myanmar, suggesting high genetic diversity of PPIV-1 in the Southeast Asia region. This study is the first to report whole-genome sequences of PPIV-1 from pigs in Thailand and Myanmar. Our result provided insights and information about the current disease status and genetic diversity of PPIV-1 in pig farms, which will benefit further animal disease surveillance, prevention, and control.

Summary: The vital cell cycle machinery is tightly regulated and alterations of its central signaling hubs are a hallmark of cancer. The activity of CDK6 is controlled by interaction with several partners including cyclins and INK4 proteins, which have been shown to mainly bind to the amino-terminal lobe. We analyzed the impact of CDK6’s C-terminus on its functions in a leukemia model, revealing a central role in promoting proliferation. C-terminally truncated Cdk6 (Cdk6 ΔC) shows reduced nuclear translocation and therefore chromatin interaction and fails to enhance proliferation and disease progression. The combination of proteomic analysis and protein modeling highlights that Cdk6’s C-terminus is essential for protein flexibility and for its binding potential to cyclin D, p27Kip1 and INK4 proteins but not cyclin B. We demonstrate that the C-terminus is a unique and essential part of the CDK6 protein, regulating interaction partner binding and therefore CDK6’s functionality.
