Abstract

The BIO-MAÏDO (Bio-physicochemistry of tropical clouds at Maïdo: processes and impacts on secondary organic aerosols formation) campaign was conducted from 13 March to 4 April 2019 on the tropical island of Réunion. The main objective of the project was to improve understanding of cloud impacts on the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) from biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) precursors in a tropical environment. Instruments were deployed at five sites: a receptor site, Maïdo Observatory (MO) at 2165 m a.s.l. and four sites along the slope of the Maïdo mountain. Observations include measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and characterization of the physical, chemical and biological (bacterial diversity and culture-based approaches) properties of aerosols and cloud water. Turbulent parameters of the boundary layer, radiative fluxes and emissions fluxes of BVOCs from the surrounding vegetation were measured to help interpret observed chemical concentrations in the different phases. Dynamical analyses showed two preferred trajectory routes for air masses arriving at MO during the daytime. Both trajectories correspond to return branches of the trade winds associated with upslope thermal breezes, where air masses likely encountered cloud processing. The highest mixing ratios of oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) were measured above the site located in the endemic forest and the highest contribution of OVOCs to total VOCs at MO. Chemical compositions of particles during daytime showed higher concentrations of oxalic acid, a tracer of cloud processing and photochemical aging, and a more oxidized organic aerosol at MO than at other sites. Approximately 20 % of the dissolved organic compounds were analyzed. Additional analyses by ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry will explore the complexity of the missing cloud organic matter. Abstract

Abstract. The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract

The BIO-MAÏDO (Bio-physicochemistry of tropical clouds at Maïdo (Réunion Island): processes and impacts on secondary organic aerosols formation) campaign was conducted from the 13th of March to the 4th of April 2019 on the tropical Réunion Island and implied several scientific teams and state-of-the-art instrumentation. The campaign was part of the BIO-MAÏDO project with the main objective is to improve our understanding of cloud impacts on the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) from biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) precursors in a tropical environment. Instruments were deployed at five sites: a receptor site, the Maïdo observatory (MO) at 2165 m asl, and four sites along the slope of the Maïdo mountain. The obtained dataset includes measurements of the gas-phase mixings ratio of volatile organic compounds (VOC), the characterization of the physical, chemical, and biological (bacterial diversity) properties of aerosols and the characterization of the physical, chemical and biological (identification of viable bacteria through culture-based approaches) properties of the cloud water. In addition, the turbulent parameters of the boundary layer, radiative fluxes, and emissions fluxes of BVOC from the surrounding vegetation were measured to help with the interpretation of the observed chemical concentrations in the different phases. Dynamical analyses using back-trajectories show two preferred trajectories routes for air masses arriving at MO during the daytime both corresponding to the return branches of the trade winds associated with the up-slopes thermal breezes, and both influenced by marine boundary layer and endemic forest below the Maïdo observatory. Additional analysis based on a high-resolution Meso-NH simulation for a typical cloudy day indicates that air masses sampled at MO likely encountered cloud processing during its transport along the slope. The highest mixing ratio of oxygenated VOC (OVOC) were measured above the site located in the endemic forest and the highest contribution of OVOC to total VOC at MO. Chemical composition of particles during the daytime shows that organic aerosol is more oxidized at MO than at other sites along the slope. This is a signature of photochemical aerosols aging along the slope. A higher concentration of oxalic acid at a site below MO indicates this oxidation occurs potentially through cloud processing. Despite an in-depth analysis of organic compounds in cloud water, around 80% on average of dissolved organic compounds is undefined highlighting the complexity of the cloud organic matter. The BIO-MAÏDO project is focusing on the analysis of observations and processes using numerical simulations: a 0D cloud chemistry model including biodegradation by bacteria in cloud water and a high-resolution 3D model coupling dynamical, microphysical and chemical processes.

Abstract

Microstructural evolutions and resulting mechanical properties have been investigated in the near-β Ti-17 alloy following long- term ageing heat-treatment up to 6000 h at 450 °C. The initial microstructure was bimodal lamellar, consisting of two populations of α grains (αlam-primary and αsecondary) in a β phase matrix. Two microstructures were obtained either via controlled heat- treatments from the β phase field - in order to generate significant differences in the grain fraction, size, density and spatial distribution - or sampled from a part submitted to an industrial processing route. High energy XRD reveals that whatever the initial microstructure, the amount of α phase increases significantly after 1000 h long-term ageing. Complementary SEM and image analysis characterizations enable to deduce that this evolution is the consequence of αsecondary growth and/or coarsening. Also, TEM observations and EDX analysis show that the Mo and Cr contents of the β phase increase and that α2 nano-precipitates form within the αlam-primary grains. Considering the mechanical properties, long-term ageing leads to an increase in the yield and ultimate tensile strength, as well as a decrease in the elongation at failure, at an extent which depends on the ageing time.

17. The Impact of Aerosols on the Stratiform Clouds over southern West Africa: A Large-Eddy Simulation Study.

Abstract

Low level stratiform clouds (LLSCs), covering a large area, appear frequently during the wet monsoon season in southernWest Africa. This region is also the place where different types of aerosols coexist, including biomass burning aerosols coming from Central and South Africa and anthropogenic aerosols emitted by local activities. We investigate the semi-direct and indirect effects of these aerosols on the diurnal cycle of LLSCs by constructing a case study based on aircraft-based and ground-based observations from the Dynamic-Aerosol-Chemistry-Cloud-Interaction in West Africa (DACCIWA) field campaign. This case is modelled using a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model with fine scale resolution and in-situ aerosol measurements including size distribution and chemical composition. The model has successfully reproduced the observed life cycle of the LLSC, from stratus formation to stabilization during the night, to upward development after sunrise until break-up of cloud deck in afternoon. Various sensitivity simulations using different measured aerosol profiles based on measurements also suggest that aerosols can affect the cloud life cycle through both the indirect and semi-direct effect. Despite precipitation produced by the modeled cloud is nearly negligible, clouds lifetime is still sensitive to the aerosol concentration. As expected, modeled cloud microphysical features including cloud droplet number concentration, mean radius, and thus cloud reflectivity are all controlled by aerosol concentration. However, it is found that the difference in cloud reflectivity is not always the only factor in determining the variation of the incoming solar radiation at ground and cloud life cycle specifically beyond sunrise. Instead, the difference in cloud-void space brought by dry air entrainment from above and thus the speed of consequent evaporation - also influenced by aerosol concentration, is an another important factor to consider. Results have shown that clouds in the case with lower aerosol concentration and larger droplet size appear to be less affected by entrainment and convection. In addition, we found that an excessive atmospheric heating up to 12 K day-1 produced by absorbing black carbon aerosols (BC) in our modeled cases can also affect the life cycle of modeled clouds. Such a heating is found to lower the height of cloud top and stabilize the cloud layer, resulting a less extent in vertical development and accelerating clouds break-up. The semi-direct effect impacts on indirect effect by reducing cloud reflectivity particularly in case of polluted environment. Finally, semi-direct effect is found to contribute positively to the indirect radiative forcing due to a decreased cloud-void space, and negatively by causing thinner clouds that would break-up faster in late afternoon, all depending on the phase in stratiform cloud diurnal cycle. Abstract

Cumulus, one type of shallow convective clouds, are the result of moist convection where water vapour in the atmosphere has condensed on aerosol particles. These clouds, because of their radiative impacts on the Earth's energy balance, their role in the distribution of water in the troposphere and their ubiquitous presence across the globe are key elements of the climate. However, their short lifetime (15-30 minutes) and their restricted spatial scale (of the order of a hundred meters or even a kilometer) make their in situ observations all the more complex as these clouds are generally advected. It is also important to understand the mixing processes between cumulus clouds and the environment since they can modify the thermodynamics of these clouds and impact their life cycle. The NEPHELAE project (Network for studying Entrainment and microPHysics of cLouds using Adaptive Exploration) aims to study the mixing processes through a complete spatio-temporal characterization of the microphysics and dynamics of clouds through the development of a fleet of RPAs (Remotely Piloted Aircrafts). The objective of this thesis is to develop an experimental strategy to study cloud processes with RPAs. The methodology relies on the combination of numerical studies and in-situ RPAs observations . The first part of the thesis focuses on the characterization of the mixing processes, with the support of LES (Large Eddy Simulation) simulations and in-situ observations. Two cases of convection, oceanic and continental, have been simulated by the non-hydrostatic model of Météo France (Meso-NH). They have allowed an individual study of cumulus clouds, provided by a cloud identification method. Entrainment processes (environmental air entering the cloud) are stronger at the base of the clouds and then decrease towards their top with stronger rates for small volume clouds, whereas the detrainment (air leaving the cloud) is stronger at the top of the clouds. These results were confirmed by the analysis of cumulus layers during the BIO-MAIDO and NEPHELAE campaigns, by tethered balloons and RPAs. The second part of this thesis focuses on the elaboration of a new observation strategy to document a horizontal cloud section. After simulating a marine cumulus field at high resolution and frequency, adaptive RPA trajectories have been defined and tested in this simulation. These adaptive trajectories were judged sufficient to reproduce the horizontal thermodynamic fields, which allowed them to be applied during the EUREC 4 A field campaign. The statistics of the cumulus clouds crossed as well as the adaptive trajectories allowed us to quantify theheterogeneities in the horizontal sections of the trade wind cumulus.; Les cumulus, nuages convectifs peu profonds, résultent de convection humide où la vapeur d'eau contenue dans l'atmosphère a pu condenser sur les particules d'aérosols. Enfin, il est important de comprendre les processus de mélange entre les cumulus et l'environnement car ceux-ci peuvent modifier la thermodynamique de ces nuages et impacter leur cycle de vie. Le projet NEPHELAE (Network for studying Entrainment and microPHysics of cLouds using Adaptive Exploration) a donc pour objectifs d'étudier ces processus de mélange par une caractérisation spatio-temporelle complète de la microphysique et de la dynamique des nuages grâce au développement d'une flotte de drones. L'objectif de cette thèse est donc de mettre au point une stratégie expérimentale afin d'étudier les processus nuageux par plusieurs drones. La méthodologie employée combine études numériques et observations in-situ par des drones. La première partie de cette thèse se focalise sur la caractérisation des processus de mélange dans les nuages, avec l'appui de simulations LES (Large Eddy Simulation). Deux cas de convection, océanique et continentale ont été simulés par le modèle non-hydrostatique de Météo France (Méso-NH) et ont servi de support pour l'étude individuelle des cumulus, via une méthode d'identification des nuages. Les profils des processus d'entraînement (air environnemental pénétrant dans le nuage) sont plus forts à la base des nuages puis diminuent vers leur sommet avec des plus forts taux pour les nuages de petits volumes alors que le détrainement (air sortant du nuage) est quant à lui plus fort au sommet des nuages. Ces processus de mélange restent indépendants du type de convection. Ces résultats ont été confirmés par l'analyse de cumulus lors des campagnes BIO-MAIDO et NEPHELAE, par ballon captif et par drones. La deuxième partie de cette thèse se concentre sur la définition d'une nouvelle stratégie d'observations permettant la caractérisation d'une section horizontale de nuage. Après avoir simulé un champ de cumulus marins à haute résolution et haute fréquence, des trajectoires adaptatives de drones ont été définies et testées dans cette simulation. Ces trajectoires adaptatives ont été jugées suffisantes pour reproduire les champs thermodynamiques horizontaux. La stratégie expérimentale ainsi validée a été déployée en conditions réelles lors de la campagne de terrain EUREC4A. Les statistiques des cumulus traversés ainsi que les suivis adaptatifs ont permis de quantifier les hétérogénéités dans les sections horizontales des cumulus d'alizés.

Abstract

The science guiding the \EURECA campaign and its measurements are presented. \EURECA comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic — eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, \EURECA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or, or the life-cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly four hundred hours of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft, four global-ocean class research vessels, an advanced ground-based cloud observatory, a flotilla of autonomous or tethered measurement devices operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air-sea interface, a network of water stable isotopologue measurements, complemented by special programmes of satellite remote sensing and modeling with a new generation of weather/climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that \EURECA explored — from Brazil Ring Current Eddies to turbulence induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation — are presented along with an overview \EURECA’s outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice.

Abstract

This PhD work is about the study of the formation of bimodal microstructures by solid-solid phase transformations and their evolutions during subsequent heat treatments, especially the one that simulates a long-term ageing in use, in the β-metastable titanium alloy Ti-17. Various initial dual-phase αprimary + βmetastable microstructures were formed from the β phase field, with significant differences in the phase microstructural parameters (fraction, size, density, spatial distribution) and chemical compositions. The influence of these initial microstructures and the heat treatment parameters (heating rate, duration and temperature of isothermal holding) on the kinetics and sequences of phase transformations during short-term ageing was then studied by means of in-situ characterisation techniques (electrical resistivity, synchrotron X-ray diffraction). Multi-scale microstructural characterisations (XRD, SEM, TEM-EDX) were coupled with quantification tools developed to precise the evolutions of the microstructural parameters and the chemical compositions during isothermal holding, in order to establish links with the mechanical properties and hardness. The complementarity of these means used eventually enabled to determine the transformation temperature domains of metastable phases (ωisothermal and α''isothermal), of which the kinetics and quantity vary with the heating rate and the initial microstructure. These differences have consequences on the resulting microstructure, in particular concerning the size and the density of the αsecondary grains. The phase chemical compositions were determined and compared to those calculated at thermodynamic equilibrium. Finally, the subsequent microstructural (increase in the α phase fraction, precipitation of the ordered α2 phase) and chemical (compositions that tend towards the ones at equilibrium) evolutions during a long-term thermal ageing were investigated and correlated to the evolutions of the mechanical properties, Ce travail porte sur l'étude de la formation de microstructures bimodales par changements de phases à l'état solide et de leurs évolutions au cours de traitements thermiques successifs, notamment celui simulant un vieillissement en service, dans l'alliage de titane ß-métastable Ti-17. Diverses microstructures initiales biphasées αprimaire + ßmétastable ont été créées à partir du domaine monophasé ß, avec des différences notables des paramètres microstructuraux (fraction, taille, densité, distribution spatiale) et de la composition chimique des phases. L'influence de ces microstructures initiales monomodales et des paramètres de traitement thermique (vitesse de chauffage, temps et température de maintien isotherme) sur les cinétiques et séquences de transformations de phases au revenu a ensuite été étudiée en s'appuyant sur des techniques de caractérisation in-situ (résistivimétrie électrique, diffraction des rayons X synchrotron). Des caractérisations microstructurales multi-échelles (DRX, MEB, MET-EDS) ont été couplées à des outils de quantification pour préciser les évolutions des grandeurs microstructurales et chimiques au cours du maintien isotherme, afin d'établir des liens avec les propriétés mécaniques en traction et la dureté. La complémentarité des moyens mis en œuvre a permis in fine de définir les domaines de formation en température de phases métastables (ωisotherme et α''isotherme), dont les cinétiques et les quantités varient avec la vitesse de chauffage et la microstructure initiale. Ces différences ont des conséquences sur la microstructure résultante, en particulier concernant la taille et la densité des grains αsecondaire. La composition chimique des phases en présence pour différentes conditions de revenu a été déterminée et comparée à celle calculée à l'équilibre thermodynamique. Abstract

Trade wind cumulus clouds have a significant impact on the earth's radiative balance, due to their ubiquitous presence and significant coverage in subtropical regions. Many numerical studies and field campaigns have focused on better understanding the thermodynamic and macroscopic properties of cumulus clouds with ground-based and satellite remote sensing as well as in-situ observations. Aircraft flights have provided a significant contribution, but their resolution remains limited by rectilinear transects and fragmented temporal data of individual clouds. To provide a higher spatial and temporal resolution, Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) can now be employed for direct observations, using numerous technological advances, to map the microphysical cloud structure and to study entrainment mixing. In fact, the numerical representation of mixing processes between a cloud and the surrounding air has been a key issue in model parameterizations for decades. To better study these mixing processes as well as their impacts on cloud microphysical properties, the manuscript aims to improve exploration strategies that can be implemented by a fleet of RPAs. Here, we use a Large-Eddy simulation (LES) of oceanic cumulus clouds to design adaptive sampling strategies. An implementation of the RPA flight simulator within high-frequency LES outputs (every 5 s) allows to track individual clouds. A Rosette sampling strategy is used to explore clouds of different sizes, static in time and space. The adaptive sampling carried out by these explorations is optimized using one or two RPAs and with or without Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) mapping, by comparing the results obtained with those of a reference simulation, in particular the total liquid water content (LWC) and the LWC distributions in a horizontal cross section. Also, a sensitivity test of lengthscale for GPR mapping is performed. The results of exploring a static cloud are then extended to a dynamic case of a cloud evolving with time, to assess the application of this exploration strategy to study the evolution of cloud heterogeneities. Abstract

Southern West Africa (SWA) is an African pollution hotspot but a relatively poorly sampled region of the world. We present an overview of in-situ aerosol optical measurements collected over SWA in June and July 2016 as part as the DACCIWA (Dynamics-Aerosol-Chemistry-Clouds Interactions in West Africa) airborne campaign. The aircraft sampled a wide range of air masses, including anthropogenic pollution plumes emitted from the coastal cities, long-range transported biomass burning plumes from Central and Southern Africa and dust plumes from the Sahara and Sahel region, as well as mixtures of these plumes. The specific objective of this work is to characterize the regional variability of the vertical distribution of aerosol particles and their spectral optical properties (single scattering albedo: SSA, asymmetry parameter, extinction mass efficiency, scattering Ångström exponent and absorption Ångström exponent: AAE). First findings indicate that aerosol optical properties in the planetary boundary layer were dominated by a widespread and persistent biomass burning loading from the Southern Hemisphere. Despite a strong increase of aerosol number concentration in air masses downwind of urban conglomerations, spectral SSA were comparable to the background and showed signatures of the absorption characteristics of biomass burning aerosols. In the free troposphere, moderately to strongly absorbing aerosol layers, dominated by either dust or biomass burning particles, occurred occasionally. In aerosol layers dominated by mineral dust particles, SSA varied from 0.81 to 0.92 at 550 nm depending on the variable proportion of anthropogenic pollution particles externally mixed with the dust. Biomass burning aerosol particles were significantly more light absorbing than those previously measured in other areas (e.g. Amazonia, North America) with SSA ranging from 0.71 to 0.77 at 550 nm. The variability of SSA was mainly controlled by variations in aerosol composition rather than in aerosol size distribution. Correspondingly, values of AAE ranged from 0.9 to 1.1, suggesting that lens-coated black carbon particles were the dominant absorber in the visible range for these biomass burning aerosols. Comparison with literature shows a consistent picture of increasing absorption enhancement of biomass burning aerosol from emission to remote location and underscores that the evolution of SSA occurred a long time after emission. The results presented here build a fundamental basis of knowledge about the aerosol optical properties observed over SWA during the monsoon season and can be used in climate modelling studies and satellite retrievals. In particular and regarding the very high absorbing properties of biomass burning aerosols over SWA, our findings suggest that considering the effect of internal mixing on absorption properties of black carbon particles in climate models should help better assessing the direct and semi-direct radiative effects of biomass burning particles. Abstract

The adsorption and spreading of lipid vesicles on solid supports has become a popular way to create supported lipid bilayers (SLBs), but little attention has been paid to the possible redistribution of lipid material between the two leaflets of an SLB. We use the technique of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) to follow the adsorption of prothrombin on SLBs formed from sonicated unilamellar vesicles containing mixtures of dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) and dioleoylphospatidylserine (DOPS). The specific interaction of prothrombin with negatively charged lipids is quantified and serves as a reporter of the content of accessible DOPS in SLBs. We compare results obtained on silica and mica and find that the underlying support can induce substantial redistribution of lipid material between the two leaflets. In particular, SLBs formed on mica showed a substantially depleted amount of accessible DOPS in the presence of calcium. The mechanisms that lead to the lipid redistribution process are discussed.
