Abstract

In phylogenetic studies across angiosperms, at various taxonomic levels, polytomies have persisted despite efforts to resolve them by increasing sampling of taxa and loci. The large amount of genomic data now available and statistical tools to analyze them provide unprecedented power for phylogenetic inference. Targeted sequencing has emerged as a strong tool for estimating species trees in the face of rapid radiations, lineage sorting, and introgression. Evolutionary relationships in Cyperaceae have been studied mostly using Sanger sequencing until recently. Despite ample taxon sampling, relationships in many genera remain poorly understood, hampered by diversification rates that outpace mutation rates in the loci used. The C4 Cyperus clade of the genus Cyperus has been particularly difficult to resolve. Previous studies based on a limited set of markers resolved relationships among Cyperus species using the C3 photosynthetic pathway, but not among C4 Cyperus clade taxa. We test the ability of two targeted sequencing kits to resolve relationships in the C4 Cyperus clade, the universal Angiosperms-353 kit and a Cyperaceae-specific kit. Sequences of the targeted loci were recovered from data generated with both kits and used to investigate overlap in data between kits and relative efficiency of the general and custom approaches. The power to resolve shallow-level relationships was tested using a summary species tree method and a concatenated maximum likelihood approach. High resolution and support are obtained using both approaches, but high levels of missing data disproportionately impact the latter. Targeted sequencing provides new insights into the evolution of morphology in the C4 Cyperus clade, demonstrating for example that the former segregate genus Alinula is polyphyletic despite its seeming morphological integrity. 32. Principals’ views on teachers’ professional development

Abstract

This article is an account of a study that aimed to elicit the perceptions of school principals and middle managers in Lebanon on teachers’ professional development (PD) and to promote an understanding of PD that extends beyond workshops. The study was qualitative and exploratory and used online interviewing to collect data. Questions were emailed to 30 school principals in Beirut and North Lebanon. The overall intention was to extract understanding of how this professional qualification and administrative responsibility is understood and how the administration attends to it. Data were reduced through a coding strategy and emergent themes such as limited awareness of the benefits of embedded PD strategies, PD features of relevance, practicality and follow-up were identified. Other themes were the focus on the concept of workshop training as PD, the administrators’ lack of awareness of cognitive learning strategies and the importance of teacher PD to school renewal. Obstacles to PD were identified and included lack of time and funding for the workshops and teachers’ attitude toward growth and renewal. The study revealed that reflection is required to alter engrained conceptual structures. Critically, the study highlighted the issue that the school system in Lebanon is not designed to promote teachers’ continual learning initiatives.

Abstract

Las lesiones por blastse observan con frecuencia en los conflictos armados modernos, tanto en un contexto terrorista como militar, o en los accidentes industriales. Las afectaciones auriculares son las lesiones observadas con más frecuencia en las lesiones por blastprimario. Se deben a un aumento repentino de la presión en el conducto auditivo externo (CAE), causante de lesiones del oído medio, e incluso del oído interno. Una onda expansiva puede deberse a una bofetada sobre el CAE, pero las lesiones más típicas y más demostrativas están causadas por el efecto de onda expansiva de una explosión. Las lesiones auriculares suelen pasar al segundo plano y el tratamiento fundamental consiste en el tratamiento de las insuficiencias multiviscerales inmediatas o diferidas, en particular el blastpulmonar. El estado de la membrana timpánica no informa sobre este riesgo y la nasofibroendoscopia precoz en busca de un blastlaríngeo parece una exploración más adecuada. El blastauricular se caracteriza por signos funcionales significativos que no se correlacionan con la exploración otoscópica. La sordera neurosensorial suele ser definitiva. Pasado un tiempo del episodio agudo, es primordial evaluar los efectos del blastauricular, porque los trastornos funcionales que provoca deterioran la calidad de vida de estos pacientes, que ya presentan una afectación física y psicológica por la explosión.
