Abstract

Abstract ARTI is a complete framework designed to simulate the signals produced by the secondary particles emerging from the interaction of single, multiple, and even from the complete flux of primary cosmic rays with the atmosphere. These signals are simulated for any particle detector located at any place (latitude, longitude and altitude), including the real-time atmospheric, geomagnetic and detector conditions. Formulated through a sequence of codes written in C++, Fortran, Bash and Perl, it provides an easy-to-use integration of three different simulation environments: MagnetoCosmics, CORSIKA and Geant4. These tools evaluate the geomagnetic field effects on the primary flux and simulate atmospheric showers of cosmic rays and the detectors’ response to the secondary flux of particles. In this work, we exhibit the usage of the ARTI framework by calculating the total expected signal flux at eight selected sites of the Latin American Giant Observatory: a cosmic ray Observatory all over Latin America covering a wide range of altitudes, latitudes and geomagnetic rigidities. ARTI will also calculate the signal flux expected during the sudden occurrence of a gamma-ray burst or the flux of energetic photons originating from steady gamma sources. It also compares these fluxes with the expected background when they are detected in a single water Cherenkov detector deployed in a high-altitude site. Furthermore, by using ARTI, it is possible to calculate in a very precise way the expected flux of high-energetic muons and other secondaries at the ground level and to inject them through geological structures for muography applications.

Abstract

We present a hybrid Muon Telescope, MuTe, designed and built for imaging active Colombian volcanoes. The MuTe has a resolution of tens of meters, low power consumption, robustness and transportability making it suitable for using in difficult access zones where active volcanoes usually are. The main feature of MuTe is the implementation of a hybrid detection technique combining two scintillation panels for particle tracking and a Water Cherenkov Detector for filtering background signals due to the electromagnetic component of extended air showers and multiple particle events. MuTe incorporates particle-identification techniques for reducing the background noise sources and a discrimination of fake events by a picosecond Time-of-Flight system. We also describe the mechanical behavior of the MuTe during typical tremors and wind conditions at the observation place, as well as the frontend electronics design and power consumption.

Abstract

The construction of the first stage of the Pierre Auger Observatory, designed for research of ultra-high energy cosmic rays, began in 2001 with a prototype system. The Observatory has been collecting data since early 2004 and was completed in 2008. The Observatory is situated at 1400 m above sea level near Malargue, (Mendoza province) in western Argentina, covering a vast plain of 3000 squared km, known as the Pampa Amarillo. The Observatory consists of a hybrid detector, in which there are 1660 water-Cherenkov stations, forming the Surface Detector (SD) and 27 peripheral atmospheric fluorescence telescopes, comprising the Fluorescence Detector (FD).Over time, the Auger Observatory has been enhanced with different R&D prototypes and is recently being to an important upgrade called AugerPrime. In the present contribution, the general operations of the SD and FD will be described. In particular the FD shift procedure - executable locally in Malargue or remotely by teams in control rooms abroad within the Collaboration - and the newly SD shifts (operating since 2019) will be explained. Additionally, the SD and FD maintenance campaigns, as well as the data taking and data handling at a basic level, will be reported
