Search

The origin of the bulk of the high-energy astrophysical neutrinos seen by IceCube, with TeV--PeV energies, is unknown. If they are made in photohadronic, i.e., proton-photon, interactions in astrophysical sources, this may manifest as a bump-like feature in their diffuse flux, centered around a characteristic energy. We search for evidence of this feature, allowing for variety in its shape and size, in 7.5 years of High-Energy Starting Events (HESE) collected by the IceCube neutrino telescope, and make forecasts using larger data samples from upcoming neutrino telescopes. Present-day data reveals no evidence of bump-like features, which allows us to constrain candidate populations of photohadronic neutrino sources. Near-future forecasts show promising potential for stringent constraints or decisive discovery of bump-like features. Given a closed smooth manifold $M$ of even dimension $2n\ge6$ with finite fundamental group, we show that the classifying space ${\rm BDiff}(M)$ of the diffeomorphism group of $M$ is of finite type and has finitely generated homotopy groups in every degree. We also prove a variant of this result for manifolds with boundary and deduce that the space of smooth embeddings of a compact submanifold $N\subset M$ of arbitrary codimension into $M$ has finitely generated higher homotopy groups based at the inclusion, provided the fundamental group of the complement is finite. Introducción: Las competencias gerenciales le permiten al médico en formación prepararse para la inserción en el sistema de salud. Objetivo: Identificar factores asociados a la percepción de competencias gerenciales en médicos egresados de los Establecimientos de Salud del Perú que participaron en el proceso SERUMS 2018-I. Material y Métodos: Estudio observacional, analítico de corte transversal. Se aplicó el cuestionario “How Dutch medical specialists perceive the competencies and training needs of medical residents in healthcare management” a los médicos postulantes al SERUMS 2018-I. Se midió el grado de asociación entre variables con la razón de prevalencia (RP). Resultados: De los 289 médicos encuestados, el 13,8% reportó haber realizado entrenamiento previo que potencialmente contribuye a su desempeño como gestor. El 35.5% se encontraba en el nivel bajo de la percepción de competencias gerenciales, el 74,8% reportó tener interés en desarrollar actividades de gerencia y un 97,2% tiene necesidad de formación en gerencia médica. El sexo y la capacitación previa que contribuye al desempeño como gerente está asociado significativamente con la percepción del desempeño de funciones gerenciales efectivas con una RP=1,66. Conclusiones: La percepción de desarrollar funciones gerenciales efectivas está asociada al sexo y a la capacitación previa.

Neutrino interactions with protons and neutrons probe their deep structure and may reveal new physics. The higher the neutrino energy, the sharper the probe. So far, the neutrino-nucleon ($\nu N$) cross section is known across neutrino energies from a few hundred MeV to a few PeV. Soon, ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic neutrinos, with energies above 100 PeV, could take us farther. So far, they have evaded discovery, but upcoming UHE neutrino telescopes endeavor to find them. We present the first detailed measurement forecasts of the UHE $\nu N$ cross section, geared to IceCube-Gen2, one of the leading detectors under planning. We use state-of-the-art ingredients in every stage of our forecasts: in the UHE neutrino flux predictions, the neutrino propagation inside Earth, the emission of neutrino-induced radio signals in the detector, their propagation and detection, and the treatment of backgrounds. After 10 years, if at least a few tens of UHE neutrino-induced events are detected, IceCube-Gen2 could measure the $\nu N$ cross section at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} \approx 10-100$ TeV for the first time, with a precision comparable to that of its theory prediction., Comment: 32 pages, 21 figures, 2 tables, plus appendix and references. Upcoming neutrino telescopes may discover ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic neutrinos, with energies beyond 100 PeV, in the next 10-20 years. Finding their sources would identify guaranteed sites of interaction of UHE cosmic rays, whose origin is unknown. We search for sources by looking for multiplets of UHE neutrinos arriving from similar directions. Our forecasts are state-of-the-art, geared at neutrino radio-detection in IceCube-Gen2. They account for detector energy and angular response, and for critical, but uncertain backgrounds. Sources at declination of $-45^\circ$ to $0^\circ$ will be easiest to discover. Discovering even one steady-state source in 10 years would imply that the source has an UHE neutrino luminosity at least larger than about $10^{43}$ erg/s (depending on the source redshift evolution). Discovering no transient source would disfavor transient sources brighter than $10^{53}$ erg as dominant. We use classical results in smoothing theory to extract information about the rational homotopy groups of the space of negatively curved metrics on a high dimensional manifold. The purpose of this study was to evaluate techno-economic feasibility and life cycle impact of algal cultivation to produce algal biomass and recover nutrients in liquid anaerobic digestate. Two pretreatment methods, namely chemical addition and electrocoagulation (EC) were applied to prepare the liquid digestate for the cultivation. Techno-economic analysis revealed that for an anaerobic digestion unit with a capacity of 100 m3 organic wastes/day, the algal cultivation in the EC treated digestate has higher biomass production (937 kg dry biomass/day) than that in chemical treated digestate (264 kg dry biomass/day). The production cost of algal biomass using EC treated digestate ($3.26/kg dry biomass) was also lower than using chemical treated digestate ($5.78/kg dry biomass). The life cycle analysis further demonstrated the advantages of the algal cultivation with both pretreatment approaches. Algal cultivation results indicated a dramatic reduction (more than 90%) on greenhouse gas emission potential and water eutrophication potential compared to direct land application of the raw liquid digestate. The cultivation on the chemically pretreated digestate resulted in slightly better life cycle impacts due to less electricity demand and more removal of phosphorus and nitrogen. The greenhouse gas emission potential and water eutrophication potential for chemical method and EC treatment were 46 metric ton CO2-e/year and 0.03 metric ton PO4-e/year and ) 465 metric ton CO2-e/year and 0.06 metric ton PO4-e/year, respectively. Objectives and importance of study: The importance of health policy and systems research (HPSR) has been acknowledged since 2004 and was recognised by the United Nations World Health Assembly in 2005. However, many factors influence its development. This paper aims to analyse the impact of politics and political determinants on HPSR funding in selected countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Methods: Using a standardised protocol, we performed an analysis of available data and financing structures for health research and HPSR, based on research in eight countries, including interviews with key stakeholders (n = 42). Results: Dollar depreciation and gross national product growth in the region may play a role in how governments fund research. There have been shifts in the political spectrum in governments, which have affected research coordination and funding in positive and negative ways. HPSR funding in some countries was dependent on budget decisions and although some have improved funding, others have regressed by decreasing funding or have completely cancelled financing mechanisms. Caribbean countries rely mainly on institutional funding. HPSR is recognised as important but remains underfunded; stakeholders believed it should be used more in decision making. Conclusion: Although HPSR is recognised as valuable for decision making and policy development, it does not have the financial support required to flourish in Latin America and the Carribean. Data on health research financing were not easy to access. There was little or no evidence of published reports or papers about research financing, health research funding, and HPSR funding in particular in the studied countries. Because of the fragility of health systems highlighted by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, HPSR should be of great relevance and value to both policy makers and funders.

High-energy astrophysical neutrinos, discovered by IceCube, are now regularly observed, albeit at a low rate due to their low flux. As a result, open questions about high-energy neutrino astrophysics and particle physics remain limited by statistics at best, or unanswered at worst. Fortunately, this situation will improve soon: in the next few years, a host of new neutrino telescopes, currently under planning and construction, will come online. It is natural to combine their collected observing power: we propose the Planetary Neutrino Monitoring System (PLE$\nu$M), a concept for a global repository of high-energy neutrino observations, in order to finally give firm answers to open questions. PLE$\nu$M will reach up to four times the exposure available today by combining the exposures of current and future neutrino telescopes distributed around the world -- IceCube, IceCube-Gen2, Baikal-GVD, KM3NeT, and P-ONE. Depending on the declination and spectral index, PLE$\nu$M will improve the sensitivity to astrophysical neutrinos by up to two orders of magnitude. This study conducted a detailed technical analysis of small-scale solar–bio-hybrid power generation systems using Rankine (steam turbine) and Brayton (gas turbine) cycles. Thermodynamic models were developed to characterize the state of working fluid and select the most suitable solar collection technology for individual power generation systems. Net capacity factor of power generation and utilization efficiencies of solar and biogas energy were used as parameters to evaluate energy generation and conclude the preferred system configuration. The analysis concluded that the steam turbine system has better global efficiency (67.7%) than the gas turbine system (55.7%), while the gas turbine system has better electricity generation efficiency (27.0%) than that (5.6%) of the steam turbine system. The effects of different climates on the selection of suitable hybrid systems were also investigated to delineate suitability and feasibility of different hybrid systems. In addition, the method used in this study can also be applied to investigate and optimize other small-scale hybrid renewable energy generation systems. The Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA) is designed to accurately observe ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and cosmic neutrinos from space with sensitivity over the full celestial sky. POEMMA will observe the extensive air showers (EASs) from UHECRs and UHE neutrinos above 20 EeV via air fluorescence. Additionally, POEMMA will observe the Cherenkov signal from upward-moving EASs induced by Earth-interacting tau neutrinos above 20 PeV. The POEMMA spacecraft are designed to quickly re-orientate to follow up transient neutrino sources and obtain unparalleled neutrino flux sensitivity. Developed as a NASA Astrophysics Probe-class mission, POEMMA consists of two identical satellites flying in loose formation in 525 km altitude orbits. Each POEMMA instrument incorporates a wide field-of-view (45$^\circ$) Schmidt telescope with over 6 m$^2$ of collecting area. The hybrid focal surface of each telescope includes a fast (1~$\mu$s) near-ultraviolet camera for EAS fluorescence observations and an ultrafast (10~ns) optical camera for Cherenkov EAS observations. The observation of electromagnetic radiation from radio to $\gamma$-ray wavelengths has provided a wealth of information about the universe. However, at PeV (10$^{15}$ eV) energies and above, most of the universe is impenetrable to photons. New messengers, namely cosmic neutrinos, are needed to explore the most extreme environments of the universe where black holes, neutron stars, and stellar explosions transform gravitational energy into non-thermal cosmic rays. The discovery of cosmic neutrinos with IceCube has opened this new window on the universe. In this white paper, we present an overview of a next-generation instrument, IceCube-Gen2, which will sharpen our understanding of the processes and environments that govern the universe at the highest energies. IceCube-Gen2 is designed to: 1) Resolve the high-energy neutrino sky from TeV to EeV energies; 2) Investigate cosmic particle acceleration through multi-messenger observations; 3) Reveal the sources and propagation of the highest energy particles in the universe; 4) Probe fundamental physics with high-energy neutrinos. IceCube-Gen2 will increase the annual rate of observed cosmic neutrinos by a factor of ten compared to IceCube, and will be able to detect sources five times fainter than its predecessor. Furthermore, through the addition of a radio array, IceCube-Gen2 will extend the energy range by several orders of magnitude compared to IceCube. Construction will take 8 years and cost about \$350M. The goal is to have IceCube-Gen2 fully operational by 2033. IceCube-Gen2 will play an essential role in shaping the new era of multi-messenger astronomy, fundamentally advancing our knowledge of the high-energy universe. Neutrinos offer a window to physics beyond the Standard Model. In particular, high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, with TeV-PeV energies, may provide evidence of new, "secret" neutrino-neutrino interactions that are stronger than ordinary weak interactions. During their propagation over cosmological distances, high-energy neutrinos could interact with the cosmic neutrino background via secret interactions, developing characteristic energy-dependent features in their observed energy distribution. For the first time, we look for signatures of secret neutrino interactions in the diffuse flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, using 6 years of publicly available IceCube High Energy Starting Events (HESE). We find no significant evidence for secret neutrino interactions, but place competitive upper limits on the coupling strength of the new mediator through which they occur, in the mediator mass range of 1-100 MeV., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, technical appendix. We revisit the flavor composition of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos observed at neutrino telescopes. Assuming unitary time evolution of the neutrino flavor states, the flavor composition observable at Earth is related to the initial composition at their sources via oscillation-averaged flavor transitions. In a previous study we derived general bounds on the flavor composition of TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrinos assuming three-flavor unitary mixing. We extend these bounds to the case of active-sterile neutrino mixing. Our bounds are analytical, derived based only on the unitarity of the mixing, and do not require sampling over the values of the unknown active-sterile mixing parameters. These bounds apply to any extended active-sterile neutrino mixing scenario where energy-dependent nonstandard flavor mixing dominates over the standard mixing observed in accelerator, reactor, and atmospheric neutrino oscillations., Comment: 10+7 pages, 4 figures, extended version accepted for publication in JCAP

Magnetic fields are crucial in shaping the non-thermal emission of the TeV-PeV neutrinos of astrophysical origin seen by the IceCube neutrino telescope. The sources of these neutrinos are unknown, but if they harbor a strong magnetic field, then the synchrotron energy losses of the neutrino parent particles---protons, pions, and muons---leave characteristic imprints on the neutrino energy distribution and its flavor composition. We use high-energy neutrinos as "cosmic magnetometers" to constrain the identity of their sources by placing limits on the strength of the magnetic field in them. We look for evidence of synchrotron losses in public IceCube data: 6 years of High Energy Starting Events (HESE) and 2 years of Medium Energy Starting Events (MESE). A novel, mechano-biocatalytic one-pot process was developed by this study to efficiently release monosaccharides from lignocellulosic materials in an environmentally-friendly manner. The process synergistically integrates ball milling and enzymatic hydrolysis to complete pretreatment and hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials in a single step without chemical supplements. High sugar titer and conversion from lignocellulosic materials were simultaneously achieved. Among four studied feedstocks (solid digestate, corn stover, switchgrass, and miscanthus), corn stover demonstrated much better sugar concentration and conversion. Under the preferred reaction condition, the glucose concentration reached 55.20 g/L with a glucose conversion of 88.63%. The corresponding xylose concentration was 20.06 g/L with a xylose conversion of 67.34%. The energy and exergy analyses further indicate that the studied process had better energy and exergy profiles than the conventional combined hydrolysis process. The average energy consumption of the mechano-biocatalytic process for four feedstocks was 1.05 kWh-e/kg dry biomass that was 56% lower than the average energy consumption (2.37 kWh-e/kg dry biomass) of the conventional process. The corresponding average exergy efficiency of the mechano-biocatalytic process was 67% that was much higher than the average efficiency (52%) of the conventional process. These results show that the mechano-biocatalytic one-pot process as an environmentally friendly approach can significantly simplify the pretreatment and hydrolysis and enhance their efficiencies for advanced fuel and chemical production. We critically examine the ability of future neutrino telescopes, including Baikal-GVD, KM3NeT, P-ONE, TAMBO, and IceCube-Gen2, to determine the flavor composition of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, ie, the relative number of $\nu_e$, $\nu_\mu$, and $\nu_\tau$, in light of improving measurements of the neutrino mixing parameters. Starting in 2020, we show how measurements by JUNO, DUNE, and Hyper-Kamiokande will affect our ability to determine the regions of flavor composition at Earth that are allowed by neutrino oscillations under different assumptions of the flavor composition that is emitted by the astrophysical sources. From 2020 to 2040, the error on inferring the flavor composition at the source will improve from $> 40\%$ to less than $6\%$. By 2040, under the assumption that pion decay is the principal production mechanism of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, a sub-dominant mechanism could be constrained to contribute less than 20\% of the flux at 99.7\% credibility. These conclusions are robust in the nonstandard scenario where neutrino mixing is non-unitary, a scenario that is the target of next-generation experiments, in particular the IceCube-Upgrade. Finally, to illustrate the improvement in using flavor composition to test beyond-the-Standard-Model physics, we examine the possibility of neutrino decay and find that, by 2040, combined neutrino telescope measurements will be able to limit the decay rate of the heavier neutrinos to below $1.8\times 10^{-5} (m/\mathrm{eV})$~s$^{-1}$, at 95\% credibility., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables. Beyond-the-Standard-Model interactions of neutrinos among themselves -- {\it secret interactions} -- in the supernova core may prevent the shock revival, halting the supernova explosion. Besides, if supernova neutrinos en route to Earth undergo secret interactions with relic neutrinos, the neutrino burst reaching Earth may be down-scattered in energy, falling below the detection threshold. We probe secret neutrino interactions through supernova neutrinos and apply our findings to the supernova SN 1987A. We place the most stringent bounds on flavor-universal secret interactions occurring through a new mediator with mass between 10 MeV and 1 GeV., 10 pages, 2 columns, and 5 figures. Bioenergy is the most widely used type of renewable energy. However, an assessment of water consumption and pollution is necessary to determine the water demand of this energy source. The Uruguayan public policy to decarbonize energy sources highlighted the use of bioenergy. In this regard, we analyzed the water footprint (WF) of four bioethanol cropping systems: (1) maize-wheat-sorghum rotation without harvested crop residues (MWS), (2) maize-wheat-sorghum rotation with harvested crop residues (MWS-R), (3) continuous sweet sorghum (Ss), and (4) switchgrass (Sw). In order to assess the WF of bioethanol production, green (WFgreen) and gray (WFgray) components of crop production were calculated by considering the different volumes of water involved in evaporation, rainfall, and fertilizer pollution. Annual cropping systems (i.e., MWS, MWS-R, Ss) had the largest WFs (23.1–30.9 m 3 L e t h a n o l − 1 ). Switchgrass had the lowest values per hectare and per liter of ethanol (12,735 m3(ha yr)−1 and 3.8 m 3 L e t h a n o l − 1 , respectively). The volume required to assimilate phosphorous (P) and nitrogen (N) fertilizers played a significant role in bioethanol cropping systems. In annual systems, WFgray was the main fraction (87%) of total WF (WFT). Averaged across all cropping systems, WFgray related to P was 13 times larger than WFgray related to N.

This study focuses on system analysis of a self-sustaining high-strength wastewater treatment concept combining solar technologies, anaerobic digestion, and aerobic treatment to reclaim water. A solar bio-hybrid power generation unit was adopted to power the wastewater treatment. Concentrated solar power (CSP) and photovoltaics (PV) were combined with biogas energy from anaerobic digestion. Biogas is also used to store the extra energy generated by the hybrid power unit and ensure stable and continuous wastewater treatment. It was determined from the energy balance analysis that the PV-bio hybrid power unit is the preferred energy unit to realize the self-sustaining high-strength wastewater treatment. With short-term solar energy storage, the PV-bio-hybrid power unit in Phoenix, AZ requires solar collection area (4032 m2) and biogas storage (35 m3), while the same unit in Lansing, MI needs bigger solar collection area and biogas storage (5821 m2 and 105 m3, respectively) due to the cold climate. We report on a search for ultra-high-energy (UHE) neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the data set collected by the Testbed station of the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) in 2011 and 2012. From 57 selected GRBs, we observed no events that survive our cuts, which is consistent with 0.12 expected background events. Using NeuCosmA as a numerical GRB reference emission model, we estimate upper limits on the prompt UHE GRB neutrino fluence and quasi-diffuse flux from $10^{7}$ to $10^{10}$ GeV. The purpose of this study was to implement and evaluate a pilot-scale and closed-loop system that synergistically combines solar thermal collector, anaerobic digester, and constructed treatment wetland to simultaneously treat and utilize organic wastes. The system utilizes 863 kg of mixed animal and food wastes to generate 263 MJ renewable energy, produced 28 kg nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer, and reclaimed 550 kg water per day. The net revenue considering electricity and fertilizer was $2436 annually. The payback period for the system is estimated to be 17.8 years for a relatively dilute waste stream (i.e., 2% total solids). The implemented system has successfully demonstrated a self-efficient and flexible waste utilization and treatment system. It creates a win-win solution to satisfy the energy needs of the community and address environmental concerns of organic wastes disposal in the region.
