Abstract

For technical and economic reasons, waterflooding is the most widely-used method in enhanced oil recovery [1]. In many situations, unfortunately, the formation water is incompatible with the injection water. The deposits and corrosion induced by the various reactions of this incompatibility cause irreversible damage, which is especially dangerous for the reservoir rock and the downhole and surface production facilities. This study is concerned exclusively with barium sulfate deposits liable to occur in surface production facilities by the mixing of injection water loaded with sulfate (1300 mg. 1 to the power of (-1)) with a formation water with a high barium concentration (1200 mg. 1 to the power of (-1)) [2]. Pour des raisons techniques et économiques, l'injection d'eau dans les réservoirs est la méthode la plus employée dans la récupération du pétrole. Malheureusement, dans bien des cas, l'eau en place dans le gisement est incompatible avec l'eau injectée. Les dépôts et les corrosions causés par les diverses réactions physico-chimiques de cette incompatibilité provoquent des dégradations irréversibles particulièrement dangereuses pour les installations de production de fond comme de surface et quelquefois pour la roche réservoir elle-même. Dans le cadre des travaux de recherche relatifs à l'inhibition des dépôts de sulfate sur le champ algérien de Tin Fouyé Tabankort, cette étude a eu pour objectif de sélectionner et d'adapter aux conditions spécifiques de la production un traitement de prévention des dépôts par injection d'un agent inhibiteur. Elle concerne exclusivement les dépôts de sulfate de baryum pouvant apparaître dans les installations de production par mélange d'eau d'injection très chargée en ion sulfate (1300 mg. 1 puissance(-1)) avec une eau de gisement très concentrée en élément baryum (1200 mg. 1 puissance(-1)). Une méthode expérimentale au laboratoire, faisant appel à des mesures de type électrochimique, a permis d'obtenir des informations relatives aux propriétés d'incrustation des dépôts de sulfate de baryum et à leur inhibition, et aux phénomènes de corrosion associés. Cette étude a montré l'extrême complexité des phénomènes mis en jeu et compte tenu du nombre élevé des paramètres susceptibles d'intervenir, on a eu recours à une méthode de planification d'expériences faisant appel aux plans factoriels fractionnaires. Cette démarche a permis, avec un nombre minimum d'expériences, d'avoir une estimation de l'importance des différents facteurs et de leurs interactions. Parmi les facteurs susceptibles d'intervenir par leur variation sur l'évolution de la réponse dans le domaine experimental choisi, les cinq paramètres suivants ont été retenus : - proportion du mélange des eaux; - nature de l'inhibiteur; - concentration de l'inhibiteur; - régime d'écoulement ; - température. A chaque facteur a été attribué deux niveaux distincts constituant ainsi les bornes du domaine expérimental. Le type de l'agent inhibiteur étant un facteur discontinu et qualitatif, les niveaux attribués sont donc discrets et ont été choisis dans deux grandes familles de produits: - les polyacrylates ; - les organophosphonates. En ce qui concerne le régime d'écoulement, ce sont les deux régimes extrêmes rencontrés à l'intérieur d'une conduite qui ont été retenus : - laminaire; - turbulent. Deux plans consécutifs ont ainsi montré que la méthode de planification d'expériences faisant appel aux matrices factorielles était bien adaptée à l'étude d'un traitement préventif des dépôts. L'importance du facteur régime d'écoulementa été mis en évidence alors que le facteur mélange des eauxn'a pas le rôle que l'on aurait pu supposer. La méthode a également permis de remarquer l'efficacité particulière des polyacrylates sous réserve d'adapter leur concentration et leur poids moléculaire aux conditions thermodynamiques et aux divers mélanges des eaux. Cette méthodologie devrait donc permettre à terme de fournir les éléments nécessaires à une modélisation et à l'élaboration d'un système intelligent capable de gérer un traitement de dépôts généralisé.

Abstract

Micrometeorites with sizes below 1 mm are collected in a diversity of environments such as deep-sea sediments and polar caps. Chemical, mineralogical and isotopic studies indicate that micrometeorites are closely related to primitive carbonaceous chondrites that amount to only approximately 2% of meteorite falls. While thousands of micrometeorites have been studied in detail, no micrometeorite has been found so far with an unambiguous achondritic composition and texture. One melted cosmic spherule has a low Fe/Mn ratio similar to that of eucrites, the most common basaltic meteorite group. Here we report on the texture, mineralogy, Rare Earth Elements (REEs) abundance and oxygen isotopic composition of the unmelted Antarctic micrometeorite 99-21-40 that has an unambiguous basaltic origin.

The test results show that only a very small amount of energy and computing time is used to implement autonomy and that the capabilities of the rover are fully used, allowing a much longer daily traverse than purely ground-planned strategies.

28. A search for extraterrestrial amino acids in carbonaceous Antarctic micrometeorites

Abstract

Antarctic micrometeorites (AMMs) in the 100-400 microns size range are the dominant mass fraction of extraterrestrial material accreted by the Earth today. A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) based technique exploited at the limits of sensitivity has been used to search for the extraterrestrial amino acids alpha-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) and isovaline in AMMs. Five samples, each containing about 30 to 35 grains, were analyzed. All the samples possess a terrestrial amino acid component, indicated by the excess of the L-enantiomers of common protein amino acids. In only one sample (A91) was AIB found to be present at a level significantly above the background blanks. The concentration of AIB (approximately 280 ppm), and the AIB/isovaline ratio (> or = 10), in this sample are both much higher than in CM chondrites. The apparently large variation in the AIB concentrations of the samples suggests that AIB may be concentrated in rare subset of micrometeorites. Because the AIB/isovaline ratio in sample A91 is much larger than in CM chondrites, the synthesis of amino acids in the micrometeorite parent bodies might have involved a different process requiring an HCN-rich environment, such as that found in comets. If the present day characteristics of the meteorite and micrometeorite fluxes can be extrapolated back in time, then the flux of large carbonaceous micrometeorites could have contributed to the inventory of prebiotic molecules on the early Earth.

29. A new carbon-rich phase (COPS) in Antarctic micrometeorites

Abstract

The contemporary flux of micrometeorites with sizes greater than 50 microns reaching the Earth's surface each year (about 20,000 tons/a) is much greater than the value of approximately 100 tons/a reported for conventional meteorites up to masses of approximately 10,000 tons. Moreover, on the average, Antarctic micrometeorites contain at least as much carbon as does Orgueil, the most C-rich meteorite. Micrometeorites are thus responsible for most of the carbon accreted by the Earth. In this paper we report SEM observations of a new C-rich 'dirty magnetite' phase observed as tiny inclusions in both melted and unmelted micrometeorites. This phase, which is enriched in C, O, P, S, Fe, frequently shows Ni contents in excess of 0.2 percent, strongly suggestive of an 'extraterrestrial' origin. We also discovered this 'COPS' phase in the fusion crust of Murchison. It appears likely that COPS is a product of meteoroid reprocessing during frictional heating in the Earth's atmosphere and/or its fast 'weathering' in the upper atmosphere. Upon 'catalyzed' hydrolysis this phase might have facilitated the functioning of micrometeorites as 'micro-chondritic-reactors' for the synthesis of prebiotic molecules on the early Earth.

Abstract

The process conditions used to produce conversion coatings on stainless steel as the basis for subsequent ceramic deposits have been optimised using statistical experimental designs. These conversion coatings should possess strong interfacial adhesion and must be highly porous; the specific area of the coatings has been measured by an electrochemical method. The effects of all influencing factors including temperature, time, and bath composition (acid, accelerators, and inhibitors), and also the interactions between these factors were evaluated using 25-1 fractional factorial design. To optimise the conversion coating, a methodological approach was supported by a Doehlert experimental design and the simplex method. The most important factors were found to be the concentrations of phosphoric acid, thiosulphate, and alcohol. Abstract

International audience; Meteoroids ˜50-200 μm in size represent the dominant mass fraction of extraterrestrial material accreted by the Earth today. About 20% of them survive as unmelted micrometeorites upon atmospheric entry, and they can be recovered from Antarctica ices and snows. Around 99% of them are related to the rare group of the most volatile-rich chondrites (˜2.5% of the meteorite falls), dominantly composed of a primitive hydrous-carbonaceous material. Micrometeorites contain a mixture of volatiles showing an elemental composition and a water isotopic composition very similar to the corresponding values measured in the contemporary Earth's atmosphere. This surprising micrometeoritic "purity" of the Earth's atmosphere led to an accretion equation to compute the total amount of any meteoroid species accreted by the Earth, during the first ˜100-200 Ma of the post-lunar period of the Early Heavy Bombardment of the solar system, when the mass flux of meteoroids was about one million times higher than today. This equation allows using micrometeorites and other meteoroid "ashes" as tracers of early planetary processes, including: the formation of the atmospheres of the Earth and Mars; the functioning of the Earth's mantle, and; the formation of the prebiotic "soups" and benign climatic conditions required for the birth of life.
