1. Non-reciprocal interactions drive emergent chiral crystallites

Abstract

We study a new type of 2D active material that exhibits macroscopic phases with two emergent broken symmetries: self-propelled achiral particles that form dense hexatic clusters, which spontaneously rotate. We experimentally realise active colloids that self-organise into both polar and hexatic crystallites, exhibiting exotic emergent phenomena. This is accompanied by a field theory of coupled order parameters formulated on symmetry principles, including non-reciprocity, to capture the non-equilibrium dynamics. We find that the presence of two interacting broken symmetry fields leads to the emergence of novel chiral phases built from (2D) achiral active colloids (here Quincke rollers). These phases are characterised by the presence of both clockwise and counterclockwise rotating clusters. We thus show that spontaneous rotation can emerge in non-equilibrium systems, even when the building blocks are achiral, due to non-reciprocally coupled broken symmetries. This interplay leads to self-organized stirring through counter-rotating vortices in confined colloidal systems, with cluster size controlled by external electric fields.

Abstract

Colloidoscope is a deep learning pipeline employing a 3D residual Unet architecture, designed to enhance the tracking of dense colloidal suspensions through confocal microscopy. This methodology uses a simulated training dataset that reflects a wide array of real-world imaging conditions, specifically targeting high colloid volume fraction and low-contrast scenarios where traditional detection methods struggle. Central to our approach is the use of experimental signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and point-spread-functions (PSFs) to accurately quantify and simulate the experimental data. Our findings reveal that Colloidoscope achieves superior recall in particle detection (finds more particles) compared to conventional heuristic methods. Simultaneously, high precision is maintained (high fraction of true positives.) The model demonstrates a notable robustness to photobleached samples, thereby prolonging the imaging time and number of frames than may be acquired. Furthermore, Colloidoscope maintains small scale resolution sufficient to classify local structural motifs. Evaluated across both simulated and experimental datasets, Colloidoscope brings the advancements in computer vision offered by deep learning to particle tracking at high volume fractions. 4. Complex flow profiles in microscopic active crystals

Abstract

Active solids emerge from self-actuating components interacting with each other to form crystalline patterns. In equilibrium, commensurability underpins our understanding of nanoscale friction and particle-level dynamics of crystals. However, these concepts have yet to be imported into the realm of active matter. Here, we develop an experimental platform and a theoretical description for microscopic clusters composed of active particles confined and self-assembled into small crystals. In our experiments, these crystallites form upon circular confinement of active rollers, with a magic number of 61 rollers per well. Competition between solidity and self propulsion leads to self shearing and complex flow inversion behaviour, along with self sliding states and activity induced melting. We discover active stick slip dynamics, which periodically switch between a commensurate static state and an incommensurate self-sliding state characterised by a train of localised defects. We describe the steady state behaviour using a discretised model of active hydrodynamics. We then quantify the intermittent stick slip dynamics using a self-propelled extension of the Frenkel Kontorova (FK) model, a fundamental workhorse of slipping and flow in crystals. Our findings in a colloidal model system point to a wealth of phenomena in incommensurate active solids as design principles for both assembly and robotics down to the nanoscale.

5. Matching markets with farsighted couples

Abstract

We adopt the notion of the farsighted stable set to determine which matchings are stable when agents are farsighted in matching markets with couples. We show that a singleton matching is a farsighted stable set if and only if the matching is stable. Thus, matchings that are stable with myopic agents remain stable when agents become farsighted. Examples of farsighted stable sets containing multiple non-stable matchings are provided for markets with and without stable matchings. For couples markets where the farsighted stable set does not exist, we propose the DEM farsighted stable set to predict the matchings that are stable when agents are farsighted.

Abstract

We consider priority-based school choice problems with farsighted students. We show that a singleton set consisting of the matching obtained from the Top Trading Cycles (TTC) mechanism is a farsighted stable set. However, the matching obtained from the Deferred Acceptance (DA) mechanism may not belong to any farsighted stable set. Hence, the TTC mechanism provides an assignment that is not only Pareto efficient but also farsightedly stable. Moreover, looking forward three steps ahead is already sufficient for stabilizing the matching obtained from the TTC.

Abstract

Summary: CombiVacS study has demonstrated a strong immune response of the heterologous ChAdOx1-S/BNT162b2 vaccine combination. The primary outcomes of the study were to assess the humoral immune response against SARS-CoV-2, 28 days after a third dose of a mRNA vaccine, in subjects that received a previous prime-boost scheme with ChAdOx1-S/BNT162b2. Secondary outcomes extended the study to 3 and 6 months. The third vaccine dose of mRNA-1273 in naive participants previously vaccinated with ChAdOx1-S/BNT162b2 regimen reached higher neutralizing antibodies titers against the variants of concern Delta and BA.1 lineage of Omicron compared with those receiving a third dose of BNT162b2 at day 28. These differences between BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 arms were observed against the ancestral variant G614 at day 90. Suboptimal neutralizing response was observed against BQ.1.1, XBB.1.5/XBB.1.9, and JN.1 in a relevant proportion of individuals 180 days after the third dose, even after asymptomatic Omicron breakthrough infections. Abstract

Active matter systems may be characterised by the conversion of energy into active motion, e.g. the self-propulsion of microorganisms. Artificial active colloids form models which exhibit essential properties of more complex biological systems but are amenable to laboratory experiments. While most experimental models consist of spheres, such as Janus particles, active particles of different shapes are less understood. In particular, interactions between such active colloidal "molecules" are largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the motion of active colloidal molecules and the interactions between them. We focus on self-assembled dumbbells and trimers powered by an external electric field. For dumbbells, we observe an activity-dependent behaviour of spinning, circular and orbital motion. Moreover, collisions between dumbbells lead to the hierarchical self-assembly of tetramers and hexamers, both of which form rotational excited states. On the other hand, trimers exhibit a novel type of flipping motion that leads to trajectories reminiscent of a honeycomb lattice., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Swimmers and self-propelled particles are physical models for the collective behaviour and motility of a wide variety of living systems, such as bacteria colonies, bird flocks and fish schools. Such artificial active materials are amenable to physical models which reveal the microscopic mechanisms underlying the collective behaviour. Here we study colloids in a DC electric field. Our quasi-two-dimensional system of electrically-driven particles exhibits a rich and exotic phase behaviour. At low field strengths, electrohydrodynamic flows lead to self-organisation into crystallites with hexagonal order. Upon self-propulsion of the particles due to Quincke rotation, we find an ordered phase of active matter in which the motile crystallites constantly change shape and collide with one another. At higher field strengths, this "dissolves" to an active gas. We parameterise a particulate simulation model which reproduces the experimentally observed phases and, at higher field strengths predicts an activity-driven demixing to band-like structures.

Abstract

The article presents the RuralYU university entrepreneurship project, developed by the Youth University Design (YUDesign) Spontaneous Generation (GE) group of the School of Design Engineering (ETSID), at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV). RuralYU aspires to reduce rural depopulation in collaboration with university students, who, by carrying out academic work, cover specific needs with the aim of strengthening rural development. The idea of ​​an inter-university collaboration programme with the rural world arose after having won the Vodafone Foundation’s Project Lab 2021 national contest within the framework of GLOBAL CHANGE with the proposal “RuralLife4Good. Accommodation grant programme for the empowerment of rural environments”. The winning proposal, which was implemented as a pilot project in Ràfol de Salem during the 2021-2022 academic year, values ​​the importance of the university at the service of society, in this case as an axis of urgent and necessary activation to avoid rural abandonment.

Abstract

Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the role of virtual environments in visual recognition. A classic and economically accessible technique was chosen: anaglyph. A battery of images that differed in their emotional charge was developed. The emotional valence of the new stimulus was evaluated using the SAM battery. 2D and anaglyph modalities were also tested. 32 subjects participated in the first study and 42 subjects in the recognition task. The results: i) Participants were more accurate in classic 2D environments compared to 3D, ii) participants were more efficient in the negative 3D condition compared to the rest of the emotional conditions in this category, while the neutral environment was the most efficient for 2D. It is suggested that coding information would be simpler for a 2D stimulus, however, effects as robust as emotional charge would manifest more clearly in a deeper presentation.
