Orientador: Nelson Alfredo Aguilar Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: A presente pesquisa de Doutorado tem como objetivo principal analisar o cenário crítico-artístico latino-americano nos anos de 1970 e tentar elucidar as questões que nortearam o debate sobre a arte produzida no continente no mesmo período, especialmente no que concerne à produção da crítica de arte. Debate este que colocou em dúvida os cânones da historiografia da arte vigente e propôs uma revisão dos fundamentos teóricos que procuravam responder a demandas sociais, políticas e culturais, observados desde meados da década de 1960. Dentre os temas mais abordados na discussão do período, encontra-se a persistente divisão do sistema de arte entre núcleos produtores artísticos considerados centrais em contraposição aos periféricos. O embate entre uma produção hegemônica e outra que se pretendia autônoma, tornar-se-á objeto de análise dos principais teóricos do continente no referido decênio. A pesquisa se concentra em estudar os caminhos pelos quais o cenário latino-americano transitou para gerar o debate e a busca por reformulação teórica, os principais apontamentos levantados pela crítica de arte do período e as conclusões e ações propostas ao fim do processo. Para tanto, a composição da tese dar-se-á pela análise tanto do contexto político-social, no qual críticos e artistas latino-americanos atuavam, quanto dos discursos levantados em um dos mais significativos eventos realizados no período, o Simpósio de Literatura e Artes Plásticas de Austin, em 1975, nos Estados Unidos Abstract: The main objective of this Doctoral research is to analyze the Latin American art-critical scenario in the 1970s and to elucidate the questions that guided the debate on the art produced in the continent in that same period, especially with regard to the production of art criticism. This debate has cast doubt on the canons of current art historiography and proposed a review of the theoretical foundations that sought to respond to social, political, and cultural demands observed since the mid-1960s. Among the most discussed topics in the period is the persistent division of the art system between artistic producing nuclei considered central as opposed to peripheral ones. The clash between a hegemonic production and another that was intended to be autonomous would become the object of analysis by the main theorists of the continent in that decade. The research focuses on studying the paths taken by the Latin American scenario to generate debate and the search for theoretical reformulation, the main points raised by the art critic of the period, and the conclusions and actions proposed at the end of the process. For this purpose, the composition of the thesis will be given by the analysis of both the political-social context, in which Latin American critics and artists worked, as well as the speeches raised in one of the most significant events held in the period, the Symposium of Literature and Plastic Arts in Austin, in 1975, in the United States Doutorado História da Arte Doutora em História CNPQ 140146/2017-2

Orientador: Patricia Dalcanale Meneses Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: A Tauromaquia é uma série de, inicialmente, 33 gravuras em metal, desenhadas e gravadas por Francisco Goya. A sua primeira edição foi publicada em Madri, em 1816. A presente pesquisa propõe um estudo da circulação e da recepção dessa série taurina entre a Espanha e a França, no decorrer do século XIX. As imagens das gravuras não apresentam uma leitura única, como é de costume na obra gráfica do mestre aragonês. São repletas de contradições, sutilezas e paradoxos que são vistos de maneiras distintas em cada contexto. A conjuntura de criação das obras é da recente restauração de Fernando VII, que restabelece também a Inquisição. A obra de Goya difere muito da iconografia das touradas que circulava na época, pois apresentava uma forma de toureio antiquada, uma perspectiva histórica com a tese da invenção moura, composições escuras e de contornos por vezes indefinidos, incidentes trágicos e encerra o percurso com a morte do célebre toureiro Pepe Illo. A representação dos mouros é relacionada com os mamelucos que, junto ao exército napoleônico, invadiram a capital do país em 2 de maio de 1808. O próprio tema das touradas era alvo de disputas políticas, religiosas e identitárias. Enquanto os intelectuais ilustrados próximos ao artista criticavam as corridas como costume bárbaro, incivilizado e pagão, nacionalistas o defendem como elemento importante para a conservação da identidade do país, frente às influências estrangeiras, sobretudo francesas e revolucionárias. O olhar sobre a trajetória da série no país vizinho é motivado pelas cinco impressões da Tauromaquia atualmente localizadas no acervo do MASP, cuja proveniência apontada é a coleção particular de Victor Hugo. No início do século XIX, o fascínio sobre a cultura, os costumes e a arte espanhola é crescente na França, especialmente incentivado por saques e pilhagens de obras de arte que levaram à construção de duas coleções, uma pertencente ao Musée Napoléon, e a outra é a Galerie espagnole de Louis Philippe, ambas referentes ao Musée du Louvre. Neste contexto, é estudado o papel de Valentín Carderera, de Federico de Madrazo, e de Barão Taylor, como divulgadores e difusores da obra goyesca, com distintos meios e interesses. A recepção textual é investigada nos escritos de Carderera e de Théophile Gautier, e as biografias de Laurent Matheron e de Charles Yriarte, enquanto a recepção no campo das artes visuais tem como estudo de caso Eugène Delacroix e Édouard Manet. Surgem as imagens do artista espanhol enquanto rebelde, anti-acadêmico, paradoxal, entre homem do povo e servidor da Corte, violento, toureiro, mulherengo, ou, por outro lado, filósofo, revolucionário e liberal. Victor Hugo apresenta um papel de síntese entre as duas frentes, textual e visual, visto que sua obra, tanto poética quanto gráfica, é influenciada pelo mestre aragonês Abstract: La Tauromaquia is a series of, initially, 33 etchings, designed and engraved by Francisco Goya, whose first edition was published in Madrid, in 1816. The present research proposes a circulation and a reception study of this bullfighting themed series between Spain and France during the 19th century. The images of these etchings do not present a single reading, as is usual in the graphic work of the Aragonese master. They are steeped in contradictions, subtleties and paradoxes that are seen in different ways in each situation. The context of creation of these artworks is from the recent restoration of Fernando VII, who re-establishes the Inquisition. Goya's work differs greatly from the bullfighting iconography that circulated at the time, as it is presented an old-fashioned form of bullfight, a historical perspective of the thesis of the Moorish invention, dark compositions with sometimes undefined contours, tragic incidents and it ends its journey with the death of the famous bullfighter Pepe Illo. The representation of the Moors is related to the Mamluks who, together with the Napoleonic army, invaded the country's capital on May 2, 1808. The theme of bullfighting itself was the target of political, religious and identity disputes. While the enlightened intellectuals close to the artist criticized bullfighting as a barbaric, uncivilized and pagan custom, nationalists defended it as an important element for the conservation of the country's identity, in the face of foreign influences, especially French and revolutionary ones. The glance at the trajectory of the series in the neighboring country is motivated by the five prints of La Tauromaquia currently located in the MASP collection, whose provenance is the private collection of Victor Hugo. At the beginning of the 19th century, fascination with Spanish culture, customs and art is growing in France, especially encouraged by the looting of artworks that led to the construction of two collections, one belonging to the Musée Napoléon, the other is the Galerie espagnole de Louis Philippe, both associated to the Musée du Louvre. In this context, the role of Valentín Carderera, Federico de Madrazo and Baron Taylor is studied as promoters and diffusers of Goya's work, with different means and interests. Textual reception is investigated mostly in the writings of Carderera and Théophile Gautier, and the biographies of Laurent Matheron and Charles Yriarte, while the reception in the field of visual arts has Eugène Delacroix and Édouard Manet as case studies. The images of the Spanish artist emerge as a rebel, anti-academic, paradoxical, between a man of the people and a servant of the Court, violent, bullfighter, womanizer, or, on the other hand, philosopher, revolutionary and liberal. Orientador: Luiz Marques Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas Resumo: Esta tese de Doutorado estuda a carreira do pintor francês Félix-Émile Taunay no Rio de Janeiro, entre os anos de 1824 a 1851. Analisamos sua atuação como pintor de paisagens, assim como sua atividade de diretor da Academia Imperial de Belas Artes entre 1834 a 1851, período em que realizou uma série de inovações no campo do ensino artístico. Entre estas medidas, está o desenvolvimento do curso de desenho, a criação das Exposições Gerais de Belas Artes em 1840, a organização da Pinacoteca da Academia, o Prêmio de Viagem à Itália em 1845 e uma constante preocupação com a atuação do artista na sociedade. Nesse sentido, foi de suma importância o trabalho conjunto de Taunay e Grandjean de Montigny na busca pelo reconhecimento e estabelecimento profissional dos arquitetos acadêmicos na sociedade carioca de então. A abordagem à pintura de paisagem de Taunay realizou-se através de duas vias distintas. A primeira delas refere-se à análise do primeiro panorama brasileiro exposto em Paris - o Panorama da cidade do Rio janeiro - com base nos desenhos elaborados por Taunay e pintados por Guillaume Ronmy em 1824. A segunda concentra-se na pintura de paisagem realizada entre as décadas de 1820 e 1840, as quais demonstram, pouco a pouco, uma nova abordagem temática do gênero. Com este trabalho, caminhamos na tentativa de cobrir uma lacuna dentro da história da arte brasileira do século XIX, seja na história do ensino artístico, seja na temática da pintura de paisagem Abstract: This doctoral thesis studies the French painter Félix-Émile Taunay career in Rio de Janeiro, in between the years of 1824 and 1851. We analyze his activity as landscape painter, as well as his activity as director of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts between 1834 and 1851, when he implemented several innovations in the area of artistic teaching. Among such accomplishments, we can list the development of a drawing course, the creation of the Exposições Gerais de Belas Artes (General Expositions of Fine Arts) in 1840, the organization of the Picture Gallery of the Academy, the Prix de Rome in 1845, and the existence of a continuous concern about the action of the artist in society. In this sense, it was of chief importance the work of Taunay in cooperation with Grandjean de Montignv for the professional establishment of academic architects in the carioca society at the time. The account of Taunay's landscape painting in this thesis is twofold. First, there is the analysis of the first Brazilian panorama exhibited in Paris - the Panorama da Cidade do Rio de janeiro - based upon Taunay's projected drawings, painted by Guillaume Ronmy in 1824. Second, we focus on the landscape painting from the 1820's to the 1840's, which gradually show a new thematic account of the genus. Orientador: Cláudia Valladão de Mattos Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: Esta dissertação faz uma análise iconográfica das imagens do Imperador D. Pedro I que foram produzidas a partir de três eventos de grande importância política: seu primeiro casamento, sua Aclamação e sua Coroação como Imperador do Brasil. Esses três eventos e as imagens criadas a partir deles são essenciais para a investigação das intenções políticas que permearam a construção da imagem pública do soberano, antes e depois da declaração da Independência do Brasil. Apesar do recorte, o trabalho não deixa de discorrer sobre as demais imagens de D. Pedro que constam da obra de Stanislaw Herstal denominada: "D. Pedro - Estudo Iconográfico", e que serviu de fonte de pesquisa de imagens para a elaboração desta dissertação. A análise das imagens, juntamente com as descrições encontradas nos periódicos e em trabalhos já escritos sobre cada um dos eventos, demonstrou que a imagem de D. Pedro não somente se serviu dos tradicionais elementos e símbolos do velho continente, como buscou agregar elementos característicos da nova Nação. Desta forma, D. Pedro inaugurou uma nova era iconográfica, que se assemelha ao que também buscaram os demais "Libertadores" das Américas, como Simon Bolívar e Agustín de Iturbide, este último também coroado Imperador do México Abstract: This thesis analyzes the iconographic images of the Emperor D. Pedro I, produced from three events of great political importance: his first marriage, his acclamation and his coronation as the Emperor of Brazil. These three events and its images are essential to research the political intentions that permeated the construction of the sovereign's public image, before and after the declaration of the Independence of Brazil. Despite this frame, this thesis also talks about the other representations of D. Pedro that appear on the book by Stanislaw Herstal entitled "D. Pedro Iconographic Study". This book was a research source of images throughout the whole process of this work. The analyses of the images, alongside with the descriptions found in the journals and papers about those events, showed that the image of D. Pedro carried, not only the traditional elements and symbols of the old continent, but also intended to add characteristic and symbols of the new Nation. Moreover, D. Pedro ushered a new iconographic era which resembles what the other "Liberators" of the Americas sought, such as Simon Bolivar and Agustín de Iturbide, the latter also crowned as Emperor in Mexico Mestrado História da Arte Mestra em História

Orientador: Paulo Mugayar Kuhl Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: Levantamento e análise da iconografia do rio Tietê, observando-se a diversidade de significações deste rio no decorrer de sua história e as representações plásticas correspondente. Analisou-se brevemente a cartografia das primeiras monções; as obras dos artistas viajantes ¿ em especial os que comprovadamente retrataram o rio Tietê, como Thomas Ender, Willian John Burchell, Aimé-Adrien Taunay e Hercule Florence e o olhar dos pintores locais ¿ Miguelzinho Dutra e Almeida Júnior. Tendo-se como foco a questão da construção do imaginário sobre o Tietê a partir de sua iconografia, enfatizou-se a análise das pinturas referentes às monções que pertencem ao acervo do Museu Paulista. Estas pinturas, produzidas no princípio do século XX, participaram de um projeto de construção da história, tendo São Paulo como referência hegemônica e cujo mentor foi Affonso D¿Escragnolle Taunay. As referidas pinturas utilizaram como modelo visual as ilustrações produzidas durante a Expedição Langsdorff e publicadas no livro ¿Viagem Fluvial do Tietê ao Amazonas¿ ¿ relato de Hercule Florence. Apesar da visualidade similar, as duas iconografias apresentam significações diferenciadas: as de Florence são crônicas visuais de uma expedição científica determinada (a de Langsdorff) e as obras do Museu Paulista são encomendas para um museu histórico que generalizam todas as monções. Para a compreensão desta dicotomia, analisou-se os contextos onde ambas foram produzidas Abstract: Survey and analysis of the iconography of the Tietê river, observing the diversity of meanings of this river during its history and the corresponding plastic representations. The cartography of the first ¿monções¿ (expeditions over the Tietê river in the XVIII-th and XIX-th centuries) was briefly analyzed through the works of the traveling artists - in special those that had effectively portrayed the Tietê river, as Thomas Ender, William John Burchell, Aimé-Adrien Taunay and Hercule Florence, and of the local painters - Miguelzinho Dutra and Almeida Júnior. With focus on the question of the construction of Tietê imaginary from its iconography, it was emphasized the analysis of paintings portraying the ¿monções¿ that belong to the São Paulo Museum. Produced in the beginning of the XX-th century, these paintings had participated of a history construction project, having São Paulo as hegemonic reference and Affonso D'Escragnolle Taunay as mentor. The visual model of these paintings was the illustrations made during the Langsdorff Expedition and published in the book ¿Viagem Fluvial do Tietê ao Amazonas¿, by Hercule Florence. Despite the similar viewing, the two iconographies present different meanings: Florence¿s are visual chronics of a specific scientific expedition (Langsdorff¿s) and São Paulo Museum¿s are orders for a historical museum that generalize all the ¿monções¿. Orientador: Lygia Arcuri Eluf Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: Esta tese procura investigar o universo visual e literário do autor fluminense Cornélio Penna - particularmente a partir do estudo do romance Fronteira (1935) - bem como as ilustrações executadas pelo autor para o mesmo romance. Além de apresentar a situação atual dos debates sobre os limites entre texto e imagem, entre poesia e ilustração, a tese compõe-se de uma série de desenhos, fotografias e pinturas produzidas pelo artista-investigador e que operam como uma tradução em imagens da narrativa, temas e personagens da narrativa corneliana. Todo o processo criativo é descrito e debatido, oferecendo uma reflexão detida sobre o modo de produção dos objetos de arte. Abstract: This thesis investigates the boundaries between Literature and Drawing taking the novel Fronteira (1935) written by Cornelio Penna, novelist and illustrator, as its main subject. The body of the present work includes not only a theoretical discussion on poetry and illustration but also presenting the actual drawings produced for Penna's text by the researcher. The creative process' analysis is also one of the author's aim, providing the reader a comprehensive view of the making of the art objects included here ad art producing as a whole. Orientador: Iara Lis Franco Schiavinatto Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: Este trabalho refere-se aos primeiros cinquenta anos de trajetória do Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional ¿ IPHAN ¿, criado em 1937. Para tanto, tem-se como lugar central de reflexão o seu Arquivo Fotográfico, compreendido enquanto instituição de saber a partir da qual se arquiva não apenas informações visuais a respeito das atividades realizadas, mas o próprio conhecimento, o saber, a ciência que move este Instituto. Para tanto, parte-se dos documentos produzidos direta e indiretamente por Herman Hugo Graeser, perito em Belas Artes, que trabalhou no IPHAN entre 1937 e 1966. Sua contribuição se mostra singular não apenas por indicar a estrutura do conhecimento produzido por este Instituto, mas, ainda, por revelar as transformações ocorridas na narrativa e nos discursos relativos a este Instituto. Assim, após apresentar a sua estrutura e seus protocolos, indica-se o lugar deste Arquivo Fotográfico num contexto particular ao Brasil, mas também em sua relação com a emergência de instituições, procedimentos científicos, regulamentações e convenções internacionais. Desta perspectiva, apresenta-se como o procedimento documental manteve-se ligado de maneira atada a uma particular relação com os museus e com o restauro, indicando a importância deste Arquivo Fotográfico na organização de toda uma estrutura da cultura nacional. Finalmente, debate- se uma mudança nos protocolos visuais, localizando o Arquivo Fotográfico frente a um novo contexto marcado pela reabertura política do país, entre os anos 1970 e 1980. Defende-se, portanto, que o Arquivo Fotográfico do IPHAN é elemento intrínseco à tessitura e manutenção deste Instituto Abstract: The present work refers to the first fifty years of the trajectory of The National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute ¿ IPHAN ¿ created in 1937 in Brazil. The central point of thought is its Photo Archive, understood as an institution of knowledge were is archived not only visual information about the activities and works but were is archived the knowledge itself, the science that mobilize this Institution. Therefore, this work recognizes the documents produced directly and indirectly by Herman Hugo Graeser, an `Expert in Fine Arts¿, that worked in IPHAN from 1937 to 1966. His contribution is singular not only by indicating the structure of knowledge produced by this Institute, but also by reveling the changes occurred in the narrative and the discourse. Thus, after presenting its structure and its protocols, is indicate the place of the Photo Archive in a Brazilian particular context, but also in its relation to the emergence of institutions, scientific protocols, regulations and international conventions. From this perspective, is presented how the documentary procedure remained tied to a particular relationship with the museums and with the restoration practice, indicating the importance of the Photo Archive in the organization of an entire structure of national cultural. Finally, a change in its protocols is debated, locating the Photo Archive facing a new context, shaped by end of the Brazilian dictatorship, between the 1970¿s and the 1980¿s. Orientador: Antonio Carlos Vitte Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Geociências Resumo: Reconhecendo a complexidade das concepções e as diferenças entre as várias expressões que se inscrevem no conjunto das manifestações e idéias contempladas pelo Romantismo, neste trabalho, nos interessa destacar alguns traços que vão influenciar de modo marcante os trabalhos de Alexander von Humboldt. Assim, tentaremos entender a dualidade de seu pensamento: a postura racionalista e o pensamento 'sensível'; acreditando ser a compreensão desta relação essencial para o entendimento do trabalho científico desenvolvido por Humboldt. Neste sentido, é objetivo central analisar o pensamento de Alexander von Humboldt a partir da sua relação com a frühromantik de modo a encontrar em seus textos afinidades com esta experiência romântica alemã. Como aporte metodológico escolheu-se utilizar as concepções desenvolvidas por Timothy Lenoir e Hans-Georg Gadamer. A Hermenêutica filosófica de Hans-Georg Gadamer é capaz de, para além da superficialidade, tornar compreensível, o sentido de determinado objeto de estudo. Já na obra de Timothy Lenoir, o pensamento que nos interessa são suas análises sobre a instituição da ciência como produção cultural Abstract: Recognizing the complexity of the concepts and the differences among the various expressions that fall into all the events and ideas contemplated by Romanticism, we highlight, in this paper, some features that will markedly influence the works of Alexander von Humboldt. So we will try to understand the duality of his thought: the rationalist attitude and the 'sensitive' thinking, this being essential to understanding the scientific work developed by Humboldt. In this sense, our central aim is to analyze Alexander von Humboldt's thought from his relationship with Frühromantik to find in his writing affinities with this German romantic experience. As methodological approach we have chosen the concepts developed by Timothy Lenoir and Hans-Georg Gadamer. Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics is capable of, beyond superficiality, giving an understanding to the meaning of a particular object of study. Orientador: Claudia Valladão de Mattos Avolese Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: O bispo Dom Duarte Leopoldo e Silva encomenda a decoração da terceira versão da Igreja de Santa Cecília, localizada na cidade de São Paulo, a Benedito Calixto de Jesus, que trabalha em conjunto com Oscar Pereira da Silva, Carlo De Servi, Conrado Sorgenicht e Gino Catani. Este trabalho visa especificamente discutir e compreender os mecanismos do mecenato religioso na cidade de São Paulo envolvidos nessa encomenda, no início da Primeira República, analisando as condições impostas pela Igreja Romanizadora, sob a luz do conceito de piedade visual, proposto por David Morgan (2005). Salientam-se, igualmente, os aspectos históricos, políticos, sociais, teológicos e artísticos inerentes a essa encomenda. Embora todas as pinturas dentro dessa igreja tenham sido analisadas, o foco recai sobre a produção religiosa de Benedito Calixto na Santa Cecília, por possuir elementos que a tornam ímpar tanto dentro dela, quanto dentro da própria Igreja, enquanto instituição, características essas vinculadas à encomenda de Dom Duarte e suas relações com os demais artistas que produzem obras religiosas para a mesma Igreja, ocupando um arco temporal de dez anos, de 1907 a 1917. Assim, pretende-se contribuir para o aprimoramento dos estudos de arte religiosa brasileira do início do século XX, durante o período da Primeira República Abstract: Bishop Dom Duarte Leopoldo e Silva commands the decoration of the third version of Santa Cecília Church, located in the city of São Paulo, to Benedito Calixto de Jesus, who works together with Oscar Pereira da Silva, Carlo De Servi, Conrado Sorgenicht and Gino Catani. This dissertation aims specifically at both discussing and understanding the mechanisms of religious patronage in the city of São Paulo related to this order, at the onset of the First Republic, analyzing the conditions imposed by the Romanizing Church, form the perspective of the concept of visual piety, as proposed by David Morgan (2005). It also addresses the historical, political, social, theological and artistic aspects inherent to this order. Although all the paintings belonging to this church were analyzed, this study focuses mainly on Benedito Calixto¿s religious works at Santa Cecília, as they hold characteristics that make it stand out both inside this temple and the Church itself, as an institution. Those are related to Dom Duarte¿s order and his connections with the other artists producing religious works for the same Church, within a ten-year time frame, from 1907 to 1917. No entanto os aspectos ligados a sua obra como pintor e crítico de arte são apenas brevemente mencionadas, mesmo estando estas em diálogo com seu entendimento político. Essa pesquisa constatou que as questões ligadas à arte tiveram um espaço relevante no trabalho jornalístico de Agostini, da mesma maneira que sua atividade como pintor, embora pouco mencionada, estaria presente em toda a sua vida profissional, além de ter precedido seu início na imprensa ilustrada brasileira. Observa-se um discurso de valorização da arte e do artista, considerados peças de grande importância na construção da nação bem como da aproximação do Brasil aos ideais civilizacionais europeus. Este estudo procura evidenciar o artista Angelo Agostini, pois acreditamos que sua formação artística fornece a base para as ilustrações dos periódicos com os quais colaborou, o que pode ser observado, por exemplo, na manipulação da linguagem pictórica. O trabalho gráfico aparece em diálogo, em diversos momentos, com suas criações plásticas, ambos reveladores de debates contemporâneos ao artista. Apresenta-se neste estudo a análise da prática artística de Angelo Agostini, bem como do discurso que a acompanha, empreendida tanto em seu trabalho gráfico quanto pictural. Abstract:In the last years the interest for the work of Angelo Agostini is growing, overcoat as regards his political acting and abolition ideas in the press. However the connected aspects his work as painter and critic of art are mentioned only shortly, even being this in dialog with his political understanding. This inquiry noted that the questions connected with the art had a relevant space in the journalistic work of Agostini, of the same way that his activity like painter, though little mentioned, it would be present in his professional life, besides having preceded his beginning in the illustrated Brazilian press. There is observed a speech of increase in value of the art and of the artist, thought pieces of great importance in the construction of the nation as well as of the approximation of Brazil to the ideals European of civilization. This study tries to show the artist Angelo Agostini up, since we believe that his artistic formation supplies the base for the illustrations of the magazines with which it collaborated, which can be observed, for example, in the handling of the pictorial language. The graphic work appears in dialog, at several moments, with his plastic creations, both revealers of contemporary discussions to the artist. O projeto final contou com 7 esculturas: 4 do artista e 3 de seus discípulos. Alguns estudiosos têm considerado que ele reuniu esculturas feitas em diversos momentos para se ver livre de uma encomenda que durou 40 anos. As recentes abordagens do significado das esculturas da Vida Ativa e da Vida Contemplativa apontam para a existência de um programa iconográfico definido. Antonio Forcellino afirma que Michelangelo se inspirou no conteúdo do livro Il Beneficio di Cristo para idealizar essas esculturas. Enrico Guidoni diz que o mestre se baseou nas iniciais de Vittoria Colonna e Faustina Mancini para concebê-las. Para Marina Gandini as duas alegorias femininas representam as formas de vida de Moisés, enquanto Maria Forcellino entende que Michelangelo teria tomado Maria Madalena e Santa Caterina como modelo ao criá-las. Quando elaborou essas esculturas, Michelangelo mantinha estreitos laços de amizade com alguns integrantes do movimento reformador italiano e comungava dos mesmos preceitos doutrinários das correntes religiosas dos valdesiani e dos "spirituali" do Circolo di Viterbo. Ao introduzir aquelas duas alegorias no monumento, o artista teria perenizado naqueles mármores a relação entre fé e obras - simbolização daquelas duas formas de vida no mundo cristão -, no tocante à justificação, tal qual essa questão era vista por aqueles reformadores, ou seja, de que apenas a fé detinha o mérito de justificar o pecador diante de Deus, sendo essa fé operadora das boas obras. Ao concebê-las o mestre não teria se baseado em qualquer escrito específico e sim em suas próprias reflexões e conversas mantidas com os interlocutores daquelas correntes sobre a questão da justificação Abstract: The sepulcher of the pope Jules II was finished by Michelangelo in 1545 at the Church of Saint Peter in Chains, in Rome. The final project counted on 7 sculptures: 4 of them by Michelangelo?s own hands and 3 sculptures made by his assistents. Some Scholars have considered that him assembled sculptures made in different moments of his life to be free of an order that lasted 40 years. The recent approaches on the meaning of the sculptures of Activ Life and Contemplative Life point to the existence of an iconographic programme previously defined by the master. Antonio Forcellino says Michelangelo was inspired by the content of the little book Il Beneficio di Cristo to idealize these sculptures. Enrico Guidoni tells that the master had based on the first letters of the Vittoria Colonna and Faustina Mancini?s names to creat them. To Marina Gandini these sculptures are the two forms of the lives of Moses and for Maria Forcellino Michelangelo took Mary Magdalene and Saint Catherine as models to make them. When he worked on these sculptures Michelangelo had narrow ties of friendship with some persons of the italian reformed movement and communicated some doctrinaire ideals of the religious corrents of the valdesiani and the "spirituali" of the Circle of Viterbo. By introducing that two alegories in that sepulchral monument the artist has immortalized on that marbles the relationship between faith and good works - symbolizations of that two forms of life in the Cristian world -, concerning the justification question, like this question was seen by those reformers, that is to say, that only the faith had the merit to justify the sinner before God, being the good works operated by the faith. Orientador : Cláudia Valladão de Mattos Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: Nesta tese analisei a recepção do livro Brasil Pitoresco, de autoria dos franceses Charles Ribeyrolles e Victor Frond (1859-1861), considerado pelo crítico Alexandre Eulálio como um dos "mais altos momentos da nossa iconografia oitocentista". A consulta aos periódicos do fim dos anos 1850 e inicio da década seguinte revelou novos dados sobre o contexto histórico em que a publicação foi realizada e, sobretudo, acerca de sua importância no meio artístico brasileiro. O livro apresenta um conjunto de imagens que associam fotografia e litografia, duas inovações técnicas relacionadas ã modernidade. Em relação à repercussão do livro, duas cartas do escritor Victor Hugo destinadas a Ribeyrolles, amplamente divulgadas em sua época, nos levam a refletir sobre o papel relevante que a fotografia e a litografia assumiram no campo artístico brasileiro no século XIX, e sobre a importância do livro enquanto obra de caráter abolicionista e liberal. Concebido para representar o Brasil na Exposição Universal de Londres em 1862, o livro causou grande impacto em sua época, tanto pelo texto como pelas ilustrações. Entre as litografias, produzidas na França a partir das fotografias de Frond, podemos destacar a série de vistas do Rio de Janeiro e a que registra o trabalho escravo nas fazendas fluminenses, a mais conhecida atualmente. As imagens do Brasil Pitoresco, amplamente divulgadas, ganharam autonomia em relação ao livro, e trouxeram inovações formais que se revelaram importantes para a produção de pintores e fotógrafos do período. Abstract: In this thesis I have analyzed the reception of the book the Brazil Pittoresco (Picturesque Brazity, produced by the French Charles Ribeyrolles and Victor Frond (1859-1861), and considered by the critic Alexandre Eulálio as one of the "highest moments of our 19th century iconography". The search on periodicals of the end of the 1850's and the beginning of the following decade has revealed new data about the historical context of the book's publication and, moreover, about its importance to the artistic Brazilian realm. The book presents a series of images that associate photography with lithography, two technical innovations that relate to modernity. Repercussion wise, two letters from the writer Victor Hugo to Ribeyrolles, amply publicized back then, lead us into reflecting upon the relevant role assumed by the book regarding the 19th century Brazilian artistic realm and upon its importance as a liberal and abolitionist work. Conceived in order to represent Brazil in the 1862's London Universal Exhibition, the book produced a huge impact on its times, be it because of its text or because of its illustrations. Among the lithographs, which were produced in France from Frond's photographs, we call attention upon the Rio de Janeiro's landscape series and the one that records slave work at haciendas in the Fluminense region. The latter is the most studied nowadays. The Brazil Pittoresco images, which were amply publicized, gained autonomy and brought about formal innovations that proved to be important for the production of painters and photographers of the period. Orientador: Luiz Cesar Marques Filho Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: Procedimento surgido na Itália central durante o Quatrocentos, o uso de modelos plásticos auxiliares estava entre as diversas etapas que compunham o longo processo de realização de uma pintura. Essa prática artística consistia na elaboração de estatuetas de argila ou cera que deveriam atuar como modelos para o pintor. Podiam ser vestidos ou não, utilizados como figuras isoladas ou em uma composição. Devido aos frágeis materiais com os quais eram feitos e ao desinteresse dos contemporâneos em preservá-los pouquíssimos resistiram à ação do tempo, e os meios agora disponíveis para atestar sua existência são sobretudo a análise de pinturas e desenhos, de inventários e da literatura artística. Com efeito, embora dispersos, há um grande número de testemunhos a respeito dessa prática nos escritos sobre arte, e através desses registros é possível compreender as funções e o valor atribuídos a esses modelos no processo criativo dos pintores. O momento de maior difusão dessa prática parece ter se dado durante o século XVI. Os testemunhos existentes apontam para um uso disseminado de tais modelos entre os artistas italianos, tanto em ambiente romano-toscano quanto setentrional. Entretanto, a partir do final daquele século também é possível perceber que seu emprego começou a ser questionado, ora sendo incentivado, ora reprovado. A análise desse período, portanto, oferece a possibilidade de demarcar essa prática artística e, ao mesmo tempo, aquilatar sua extensão e seu alcance. Abstract: Procedure emerged in central Italy during the Quattrocento, the use of auxiliary plastic models was among the various stages that made up the long process of creating a painting. This practice consisted in developing artistic figurines of clay or wax, which should act as models for the painter. They could be dressed up or not, used as isolated figures or in a composition. Due to the fragile materials with which they were made and the lack of interest of the contemporaries in preserving them, just a few could resist the action of time, and the resources now available to attest to their existence are primarily the analysis of paintings and drawings, of inventories and of the artistic literature. Actually, although sparse, there are a lot of testimonies about this practice in the writings on art, and through these records it is possible to understand the functions and the value attributed to these models in the creative process of painters. The moment of greatest diffusion of this practice seems to have taken place during the sixteenth century. The existing evidences point to a widespread use of such models among Italian artists, both in central and northern Italy. However, from the end of the century it is also possible to notice that this practice came into question, sometimes being encouraged and sometimes disapproved. The analysis of this period, therefore, offers the possibility of demarcating this artistic practice and, at the same time, assessing its extent and scope. Doutorado Doutor em História

Orientador: Claudia Valladão de Mattos Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: Percursos e percalços: o fim da história da arte segundo Hans Belting propõe uma reflexão sobre a tese do fim da história da arte desenvolvida ao longo de duas décadas pelo historiador da arte, o alemão Hans Belting (1935). Tendo em vista o contexto no qual emerge, seus pontos fundamentais e, particularmente, a recepção dessa tese no contexto brasileiro, o estudo apresenta-se a partir de três eixos. O primeiro deles é uma análise do lugar do discurso, contextualizando a tese de Hans Belting não apenas com a conjuntura histórica na qual estava imerso, mas iluminando-a com a tradição germânica historiográfica da arte da qual é herdeiro. O segundo eixo pretende analisar a tese a partir de pontos que se consideram fundamentais para a compreensão de sua obra: a história da arte como um enquadramento; a história da arte como produto moderno; a crise da história da arte como ciência européia. Por fim, pretende-se mapear a recepção da obra de Belting especificamente no contexto brasileiro, relacionando tal recepção com o atual estado da história da arte no Brasil Abstract: Paths and pitfalls: the end of the history of art by Hans Belting proposes a reflection about the theory of the end of art history developed over two decades by the art historian, German Hans Belting (1935). Given the context in which it emerge, its crucial points and particularly the reception of this thesis in Brazilian context, the study will be presented from three axes. The first is an analysis of the place of the speech, contextualizing that thesis of Hans Belting not only with the historical context in which they were immersed, but illuminating it with the Germanic traditional art historiography. The second axis aims to examine the thesis from points which are considered fundamental to understanding his work: the history of art as a framework, the history of art as modern product, the crisis in the history of art as a science in Europe. Orientador: Maria Jose de Azevedo Marcondes Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo analisar a série de obras do artista plástico Anselm Kiefer, produzidas a partir da visita ao Brasil no ano de 1987, na qual as vistas aéreas da paisagem urbana de São Paulo tornaram-se elemento propulsor. O registro em fotos, sobre a metrópole brasileira, transformou-se em material para o desenvolvimento de uma nova série de criação que marca mudanças nos temas e nos procedimentos pictóricos dentro do conjunto de sua produção artística. A pesquisa desenvolveu-se através da análise dos registros sobre a obra de Kiefer em arquivos e bibliotecas de Instituições artísticas brasileiras como Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, Pinacoteca do Estado e Instituto Goethe, além da análise de uma obra original da série citada, disponibilizada por uma colecionadora brasileira. O trabalho foi fundamentado através de publicações de autores como Walter Benjamin, Daniel Arasse, Andrea Lauterwein, Andreas Huyssen, Brissac Peixoto, Sérgio Paulo Rouanet, Alberto Tassinari, Márcio Seligmann-Silva, W.J.Mitchell, Mieke Ball, Hans Belting entre outros. Através do material pesquisado, foram desenvolvidas reflexões no âmbito da arte contemporânea, utilizando-se conceitos desenvolvidos pelos teóricos e críticos da arte. Houve a necessidade de retomar a produção do artista desde suas primeiras obras, em que os temas concentravam se na história alemã e na origem do povo germânico. A influência da poesia de Paul Celan reflete uma mudança de temas na produção do artista que passa a explorar a cultura judaica. Estas questões tornaram-se necessárias para a compreensão dos motivos que levaram Kiefer a dedicar-se a uma série de obras sobre a paisagem brasileira. A situação do artista alemão no pós-guerra e a necessidade de mudança na concepção tradicional da representação a partir do Holocausto, a memória e a paisagem em ruínas, são temas transferidos para diversos contextos e passaram a funcionar como metáfora no desenvolvimento de sua produção artística. Assim, no período analisado concluiu-se que há um deslocamento, que parte da problemática gerada pela catástrofe histórica, vivenciada por Kiefer, para a compreensão de vários questionamentos que aludem à paisagem urbana contemporânea. A percepção da transitoriedade é sentida através dos materiais utilizados pelo artista em questão, que guardam as marcas do tempo e abrem um campo complexo de discursos. Orientador: Nelson Alfredo Aguilar Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas RESUMO: A obra de Kazímir Sievierínovitch Maliévitch (1878-1935) compõe um dos relatos mais significativos que se relacionam tanto ao declínio das concepções tradicionais da arte e a eclosão das vanguardas modernistas quanto ao confronto entre as diversas tendências ideológicas que marcaram a Rússia nas primeiras décadas do séc. XX. Nesse sentido, a importância de sua obra não está encerrada em um nível estritamente artístico, mas que se estende a um quadro coerente aos ideais revolucionários do período, os quais garantiam aos artistas um papel de destaque na construção da nova sociedade soviética. Quase como uma regra, após a Revolução de 1917, os artistas da vanguarda russa buscaram criar no interior das instituições de arte parâmetros científicos de pesquisa, fruição e análise das formas artísticas, ou em outras palavras, a sistematização do conhecimento artístico. A Teoria do elemento adicional em pintura criada por Maliévitch foi o eixo de seu método pedagógico. Com base em uma consistente produção teórica e prática realizada ao longo de sua vida, Maliévitch elaborou um modelo capaz de analisar diferentes culturas pictóricas do início do século XX, propondo a desmistificação do processo criativo em resposta ao suposto caráter inacessível da arte moderna, produção relevante até os dias de hoje, de interesse tanto no âmbito da história da arte como da educação estética. ABSTRACT: The work of Kazimir Severinovich Malevich (1878-1935) makes up one of the most significatives accounts that relate not only to the fall of the traditional concepts of art and modernist vanguards birth, but also to the confrontation amongst the ideological strains which marked Russia in the first decades of the XX century. In this sense, the importance of his work is not restrained to an estrictly artistic sense, but it extends to a consistent to the period revolutionary ideals one, which vouched the artists a prominent role in the construction of the new soviet society. Almost as a rule, after the 1917 Revolution, the Russian vanguard artists pursued the creation of scientific research parameters within the art institutions, or, in short, the artistic knowledge systematization. The Theory of additional element in painting created by Malevich was the core of his pedagogical method. Based in a sound theoretical and practical production made on the course of his life, Malevich engendered a model capable of analyze different pictorical cultures of the XX century beginning, proposing the creative process desmistification in respond to the assumed unattainable form of the modern art, a production pertinent to this day, of concern not just in the art history realm, but in aesthetical education also. A presença desse símbolo no conjunto de sua obra acompanhou sua iniciação na cena expressionista alemã, em 1917, estendendo-se até o final dos anos 1930, quando já estava estabelecido como artista no Brasil. Estudando os efeitos de transformação e negação característicos das máscaras, nosso objetivo é compreender a dinâmica das aparições desse símbolo ao longo de sua trajetória, bem como acompanhar o movimento dessa imagem no interior de uma complexa trama de formações estéticas, políticas e sociais que impactaram a biografia do artista. Examinando a dinâmica de seus usos e significações ao longo do tempo, indicamos tanto a importância desse recurso alegórico para o artista, como também a sua especificidade em mediar debates em torno de questões relativas ao judaísmo, nacionalismo e antissemitismo Abstract: This dissertation is a study on the iconography of the mask in the artistic trajectory of Lasar Segall (1889-1957). The presence of this symbol in the whole of his ouvre followed his initiation into the German Expressionist scene in 1917, reaching the end of the 1930s, when he had already established himself as an artist in Brazil. By studying the effects of transformation and negation, which are characteristic of the masks, our aim is to understand the dynamics of the apparitions of this symbol throughout his career, as well as to observe its movement within a complex web of aesthetic, political and social formations that influenced the artist's biography. Orientador: Claudia Valladão de Mattos Avolese Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: A tese discute as possibilidades de construção de modos de aproximação em instituições museológicas, baseados em estudos de casos específicos que foram visitados e problematizados durante o estudo. O resultado é um inventário experimental de possibilidades de atuação crítica nesses espaços de legitimação de arte e de História ¿ com interesse na decodificação de seus discursos e estratégias, revelando seus jogos de poder, explícitos ou implícitos, e, muitas vezes, caminhando em direção contrária a seus procedimentos. O ponto inicial foi proporcionado pelo fechamento temporário do edifício do Museu Paulista, em São Paulo, para reforma, tornando uma das peças centrais da coleção, a pintura Independência ou Morte, de Pedro Américo, indisponível ao público até 2022. Aproveitando tal oportunidade, a pesquisa discute a impossibilidade de acesso público à obra e à instituição como um gerador de um campo de possibilidades de reflexão que, uma vez experimentado, permite um melhor entendimento do sistema chamado aqui de museu, suas obras e estruturas. Tal circunstância trouxe, em especial, a constatação inequívoca de que tanto as obras de arte, quanto a própria instituição cultural constituem-se não apenas da realidade material, ou das ações ali expostas, mas as transcendem através de suas imagens e memórias. Ao longo da tese, a pesquisa também problematiza um conjunto de museus europeus, em especial ao Ateneum, localizado em Helsinque, e o Hermitage, em São Petersburgo. Em seu conjunto, busca-se construir um relato de experiências bastante diversas, mas complementares, realizadas durante cinco meses na Europa, todas interessadas no exame de aspectos e procedimentos que marcam de forma genérica o sistema museu. Estão incluídas, por exemplo, uma aproximação mista ao museu finlandês já citado, que se iniciou a partir de uma investigação ampla de suas áreas comuns e de suas reverberações na cidade e na população de Helsinque, terminando com uma comparação dos materiais construídos com visitas presenciais a suas galerias expositivas. No caso do Hermitage, desenvolve-se um modo atípico de se estudar uma das maiores coleções de obras de arte do mundo, a partir de visitas aos espaços expositivos, mas sem o auxílio da visão humana presencial. O procedimento revelou-se capaz de desestruturar grande parte da expografia oficial das salas expositivas e realinhar as hierarquias entre objetos artísticos e não artísticos desse museu. Esse procedimento de construção de novos modos de olhar uma coleção também resultou em um filme (parte dos anexos da tese) que discute uma aproximação ao Van Abbemuseum, em Eindhoven, a partir de técnicas de visão computacional realizadas por Inteligências Artificiais. Expandindo as aproximações a museus, a conclusão da tese inclui reverberações das ações em outro espaço não necessariamente museológico, mas também constituintes do sistema da arte, a saber a 33ª Bienal de São Paulo. Ali, Moreschi realizou o projeto comissionado Outra 33ª Bienal de São Paulo, um conjunto de mediações que buscou entender camadas muitas vezes ignoradas dessa exposição ¿ parte considerável delas, maximizações das experiências realizadas nos museus experimentados neste doutorado Abstract: The thesis discusses the possibilities of building approaches in museological institutions, based on specific case studies that were visited and problematized during the study. The result is an experimental inventory of possibilities for critical action in these legitimating spaces of art and history - with an interest in the decoding of their discourses and strategies, revealing their power games, explicit or implicit, and often moving in the opposite direction to their procedures. The initial point was provided by the temporary closure of the Paulista Museum building in São Paulo, for reform, making Pedro Américo's painting Independência ou Morte, one of the central pieces of the collection,unavailable to the public until 2022. The research discusses the impossibility of public access to the painting and to the institution as a generator of a field of possibilities for reflection that, once experienced, allows a better understanding of the system called here museum, its works and structures. This circumstance brought in particular the unmistakable realization that both works of art and the cultural institution themselves are constituted not only of the material reality or of the actions exposed there, but transcend them through their images and memories. Throughout the thesis, the research also problematizes a set of European museums, in particular the Ateneum, located in Helsinki, and the Hermitage, in St. Petersburg. As a whole, an attempt is made to construct an account of quite different but complementary experiences, carried out during five months in Europe, all interested in examining aspects and procedures that generally mark the museum system. This includes a mixed approach to the Finnish museum already mentioned, which began with a broad investigation of its common areas and their reverberations in the city and population of Helsinki, ending with a comparison of the materials constructed with on-site visits to its exhibition galleries. In the case of the Hermitage, an atypical way of studying one of the largest collections of works of art in the world is developed, based on visits to the exhibition spaces, but without the aid of human in-person visions. The procedure proved capable of disrupting much of the official exhibition design of the exhibition rooms and realigning the hierarchies between artistic and non-artistic objects of this museum. This procedure of constructing new ways of looking at a collection also resulted in a film (part of the appendices of the thesis) that discusses an approach to Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven from computer vision techniques performed by Artificial Intelligence. Expanding approaches to museums, the conclusion of the thesis includes reverberations of actions in another space not necessarily museological, but also constituent of the art system, namely the 33rd São Paulo Biennial. O paradoxo latente à questão enunciada por Campos-Pons dá nome a esta tese, e abre caminho para uma investigação sobre a presença dos artistas da diáspora africana na bienal de Dacar — também conhecida como Dak’art —, ao longo de suas dez primeiras edições (1992-2012). Expoente cultural da África do Oeste, a cidade de Dacar é tomada aqui como um terreno privilegiado na gestação de imagens e narrativas dos sujeitos em diáspora, tanto no campo das artes, quanto da política ou da produção intelectual. Guiados por pautas heterogêneas, tais sujeitos projetam na África diferentes temporalidades. Do retorno desejado a uma terra ancestral ao olhar futurista e cosmopolita que desvincula o continente do legado colonial, tais projetos acompanham as distinções entre as dispersões históricas e contemporâneas, sem desconsiderar o horizonte global de pertencimento e solidariedade que questiona a racialização do "ser negro" face ao privilégio social da "brancura". Muitas vezes oscilantes, as narrativas de pertencimento associadas ao campo da arte contemporânea africana estão diretamentes relacionadas a esse contexto, e posicionam os artistas entre a adesão e a recusa de identidades essencializadas no campo da história da arte. Longe de indicar uma contradição, tais posicionamentos são estrategicamente mobilizados pelos artistas que os enunciam, lhes permitindo afirmar sua coetaneidade e negociar ativamente sua entrada no mundo da arte contemporânea. Ora, que visões de mundo, experiências sociais, dimensões simbólicas e políticas o termo "diáspora africana" engloba? E, como repercutem no campo da arte contemporânea? Que imagens os artistas da diáspora mobilizam ao expor seus trabalhos no continente africano? E, por outro lado, o que representa para a cena dakaroise a presença dos artistas da diáspora? Essas são algumas das questões que esta tese se propõe a responder Abstract: "Would it be possible to return to a place where I have never been before?", asked the Cuban artist Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons as she narrated her first exhibition on African soil — part of the sixth Dakar Biennial (Senegal, 2004). The paradox underlying the question enunciated by Campos-Pons gives name to this thesis, and opens the path for an enquiry on the presence of African Diaspora artists at the Dakar Biennale — also known as Dak'art — throughout its first ten editions (1992-2012). A cultural exponent of West Africa, the city of Dakar is taken here as a privileged site for the development of images and narratives of the individuals in diaspora, whether in the arts, in politics or intellectual production. Spanning heterogeneous agendas, these individuals ascribe distinct temporalities to the African continent. From the longed-for return to an ancestral land to the futuristic and cosmopolitan gaze that unbinds the continent from the colonial legacy, such projects encompass the distinctions between historical and contemporary dispersions — ultimately aware of the global horizon of kinship and solidarity that questions the racialization of the "black being" vis à vis the social privilege of "whiteness". The narratives of belonging associated with the field of contemporary African art are directly related to this context, and are often grounded in oscillating positions that place artists between the adherence to and the denial of essentialized identities in the field of art history. Far from a contradiction, such positions are strategically mobilized by the artists who enunciate them, allowing the assertion of coevalness and the active negotiation of their entry into the contemporary art world. Which worldviews, social experiences, symbolic and political dimensions does the term "African Diaspora" encompass? How does it resonate in the field of contemporary art? What images do Diaspora artists mobilize when exhibiting their work on the African continent? And, on the other hand, what does the presence of Diaspora artists represent for the Dakaroise art scene? Orientador: Claudia Valladão de Mattos Avolese Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: Esta pesquisa tem como proposta o estudo da tatuagem tradicional japonesa (horimono) e suas representações em estampas xilográficas do século XIX, com especial atenção à tópica de atores de kabuki. A tatuagem constituiu popular item de moda citadina nas décadas finais do período Edo (1603-1868) e acreditamos que este fenômeno foi em muito corroborado pela adoção do horimono como atributo de um personagem típico do teatro kabuki, o otokodate. Referido, por vezes, como "citadino heroico" ou "valentão das ruas", otokodate é versão para os palcos de grupos de bandidos ou arruaceiros da vida real, conhecidos como machi-yakko. Constituídos por homens da gente comum citadina, eles se opunham a semelhantes agrupamentos de samurais (hatamoto-yakko), os quais se aproveitariam dos privilégios de que dispunham, na ordem social Tokugawa, para promover intimidação contra os membros dos grupos que lhes eram hierarquicamente inferiores. Otokodate, eram, assim, defensores dos desprestigiados e habitantes da zona turva entre criminalidade e heroísmo. Existente desde o século XVIII, este tipo teatral ganhou proeminência com a ascensão do gênero conhecido como kizewamono no século XIX. Acreditamos que a tatuagem, então já relativamente popular nas ruas, associou-se como marca aos modos convencionados de encenação (kata) deste personagem, sendo apresentada nos palcos e nas centenas de estampas de ator que então circulavam entre o público, ampliando, deste modo, o seu alcance e tornando-se expressivo fenômeno entre homens citadinos. Para realizar nosso estudo, baseamo-nos em pesquisa bibliográfica e na análise de várias destas estampas, com destaque para duas séries de Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865), o principal responsável pela representação do kabuki no século XIX, realizadas nas décadas de 1850 e 1860. As obras foram selecionadas a partir da consulta, sobretudo, aos acervos do Museu de Belas Artes de Boston e da Universidade de Waseda, além de coleções complementares, como as da Universidade de Ritsumeikan, dos Museus de Arte de Harvard e do Instituto Moreira Salles Abstract: This is a study of the traditional Japanese tattoo (horimono) and its representations in woodblock prints dating from nineteenth-century Japan, with special attention to kabuki actor prints. Tattoos were a popular fashion trend in the last decades of the Edo period (1603-1868) and it is our oppinion that this phenomenon was corroborated, to a large extent, by the adoption of horimono as a prop of the kabuki character known as otokodate. Refered at times as "heroic commoner" ou "street rough", otokodate are the kabuki version of real life rowdies known as machi-yakko. Constituted by commoner males, machi-yakko defied similar samurai groups (hatamoto-yakko), which were guilt of disturbing the commoner population and earning a life by means of intimidation, puting to use the privileges they were assured by the Tokugawa government. Otokodate were, thus, commoners avengers, and inhabited in the cloudy zone between criminality and heroism. Existing since the 18th century, this kabuki character rose to prominence with the emergence in the 19th century of a dramatic genre known as kizewamono. We believe that tattoos, which were by then midly popular at the streets, were associated as a brand in the ways of acting (kata) of this particular character, and were, thus, presented at the stages and in the hundreds of actor prints that circulated among the public. This enlarged its reach and permitted it to become a massive phenomenon among commoner males. The development of this study was made possible by extensive bibliographical research, alied to the analysis of prints, especially the ones constituting two particular series by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865), who was by then the main responsible for kabuki representations in this media. Orientador: Luiz Cesar Marques Filho Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: Conhecida como a enciclopédia do mundo antigo, a História Natural (77d.C.), obra de Plínio, o Velho, encerra em seus últimos livros nossa mais antiga referência de história da arte. Nesse sentido, destaca-se o Livro 35 ("da pintura") como seu núcleo crítico: por sua extensão e organização, mas, principalmente, pela questão que se abre entre a perda inelutável das suas pinturas e a incalculável e variada série de recorrências que estas mesmas obtiveram ao longo da história da arte (entre artistas, obras, historiadores, críticos e teóricos). Logo, partindo da manifesta disjunção que o caracteriza entre a abrangência de sua repercussão no pensamento artístico e os graus de desconhecimento visual das obras comentadas, nossa hipótese é a de que é possível identificar no texto pliniano certa singularidade constitutiva de toda uma tradição historiográfica. A saber: a de que a arte pode ser compreendida pelos efeitos que produz, por uma particular efetividade, talvez até a guardar alguma independência da peça existente. Então, e justamente através do criticado estilo literário pliniano composto por anedotas, o objetivo consiste em aclarar a importância deste anedotar como construção estrutural de uma categoria crítica transtemporal, não só passível de reconhecimento como também de fundamentação teórica. Para tanto, revisamos a sua fortuna crítica encaminhando as recorrências ao âmbito de uma discussão estética na Antiguidade. Fazemos isso relacionando os mais recentes trabalhos internacionais acerca de Plínio e sua obra, bem como trabalhando a fundo as já incontroversas afinidades de seu pensamento com a filosofia estoica. Todavia, sem com isto caracterizar um trabalho de viés filológico mas, antes e somente, de história da crítica de arte. Em outras palavras, trabalho mais de interlocução de questões artísticas antigas e contemporâneas do que de tradução ou reinterpretação de textos, obras, fragmentos ou vestígios. Portanto, o que importa são as relações possíveis abertas pelo texto pliniano com as reflexões artísticas historiografadas. Dado isso, configura-se a "paradoxografia" que intitula a pesquisa: referência ao gênero antigo de relacionar os disjuntos e de explanar ou historiar o inexistente Abstract: Known as the encyclopedia of the ancient world, the Historia Naturalis (77d.C.), work of Pliny the Elder, contains in his last books our oldest reference art history. In this sense, Book 35 ("of painting") stands out as its critical core: for its extension and organization, but mainly for the question that opens between the ineluctable loss of his paintings and the incalculable and varied series of recurrences which they have obtained throughout art history (among artists, works, historians, critics and theorists). Therefore, from the manifest disjunction that characterizes it between the coverage of its repercussion on artistic thought and the degrees of visual ignorance of the commented works, our hypothesis is that it is possible to identify in the plinian text certain constitutive singularity of a whole historiographic tradition. Namely: that art can be understood by the effects it produces, by a particular effectiveness, perhaps even to preserve some independence of the existing piece. Then, and precisely through the criticized plinian style of writing composed of anecdotes, the objective is to clarify the importance of those anecdotes as structural construction of a transtemporal critical category, not only subject to be recognizable but also theoretically grounded. To do so, we review his critical fortune by referring the recurrences to the scope of an aesthetic discussion in antiquity. We do this by relating the most recent international works on Pliny and his work, as well as working on the already incontrovertible affinities of his thought with Stoic philosophy. Nevertheless, without characterizing a work of philological bias, but rather, before and only, of criticism in art history. In other words, a research more on interlocution of old and contemporary artistic questions than on translation or reinterpretation of texts, works, fragments or traces. Therefore, what matters is the possible relations opened by the plinian text with the historiographical artistic reflections. Orientador: Nelson Alfredo Aguilar Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: Esta tese parte da apresentação histórica e teórica sobre a fotografia contemporânea desde a questão ontológica, que ganhou espaço nos anos 80, através, principalmente, de nomes como Roland Barthes, Rosalind Krauss e Philippe Dubois, para chegar em pensamentos mais recentes de autores como Michel Poivert, Dominique Baqué, Tadeu Chiarelli, Rubens Fernandes Jr., entre outros. Desenvolve-se, desde aí, um percurso que visa apontar a evidência de um conjunto de relações medradas no interior de obras que, ao mesmo tempo em que podem ser vistas como parte de um processo contemporâneo em fotografia, também o ultrapassam quando se encontram de fato numa situação ampla de absorção da substância fotográfica por processos e estratégias dos artistas na contemporaneidade. Produções de característica híbrida em muitos sentidos, que abarcam outras especificidades da arte tanto quanto resíduos do cotidiano; e que carregam a marca da ação corporal ou interferência gestual do artista no arquivo, no suporte, na composição cênica e na construção da imagem ou objeto artísticos. Para construir tal percurso, parte-se da escolha de seis exposições que se perguntam, em sua proposição e no próprio título, o que é a fotografia, quais seus extremos, limites, fronteiras e territórios. Essas mostras foram apresentadas por importantes instituições museológicas de fotografia e arte moderna e contemporânea, numa escolha por um paralelo entre capitais de arte da América do Norte, da América do Sul e da Europa. Assim, e pensando num recorte temporal que se concentrasse no século XXI, em São Paulo, escolheu-se trabalhar com o Museu de Arte Contemporânea da USP, que apresentou entre 2013 e 2015 a exposição Fronteiras Incertas e com o Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, que apresentou, em 2001, a exposição Fotografia/Não Fotografia. Em Nova Iorque, elegeu-se as exposições What is a Photograph?, apresentada pelo International Center of Photography e The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to today , apresentada pelo Museu de Arte Moderna. E finalmente, em Paris, as exposições Qu¿est-ce que la Photographie?, apresentada pelo Centre Georges Pompidou e Autour de l¿Extrême, apresentada pela Maison Européenne de la Photographie foram as eleitas para fecharem o grupo que forma o objeto de pesquisa desta tese. Sendo as exposições, parte importante do discurso que os museus constroem sobre a arte e sobre o que legitimam enquanto tal, resolveu-se então seguir as trilhas e apontamentos que essas mostras aduziam, por seus diferentes caminhos, com o objetivo central de perceber características internas constituintes das obras que delas fizeram parte, assim como relações que estabelecem entre si, e que denotam lugares e (in) definições para a fotografia, no campo da arte contemporânea, neste início de século Abstract: This thesis starts with a historical and theoretical presentation about contemporary photography from the ontological subject, which gained evidence in the 1980s, mainly through names such as Roland Barthes, Rosalind Krauss and Philippe Dubois, to more recent authors such as Michel Poivert, Dominique Baqué, Tadeu Chiarelli, Rubens Fernandes Junior. Since then, a line of thought that aims to show a set of evidences in the relationship among works has been developed, at the same time it can be seen as part of a contemporary process in photography, but also surpass it when they are fact in a broader situation of absorption of the photographic substance by the processes and strategies of the contemporaneous artists. Productions with hybrid characteristics in many senses, that cover other specificities of art as much as residues of everyday life; and that carry the mark of the corporal action or gestural interference of the artist in the archive, the support, the scenic composition and in the construction of the image or artistic object. To build this path, the research starts from six expositions that question themselves, in their proposition and in their own title: what photography is and what are its extremes, limits, borders and territories? These exhibitions were presented by leading photography museological institutions for modern and contemporary art, and chosen to create a parallel among art capitals in North America, South America and Europe. Thus, considering a temporal cut that focused on the XXI century, in São Paulo, we chose to work with the Museum of Contemporary Art of USP (University Of Sao Paulo State), which presented between 2013 and 2015 the exhibition Fronteiras Incertas and with the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, who presented the Fotografia/Não Fotografia exhibition in 2001. In New York, the selected exhibitions were: What is a Photograph? presented by the International Center of Photography and The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 until today, presented by the MoMa (Museum of Modern Art). And, in Paris, the exhibitions Qu'est-ce que la Photographie ?, presented by the Center Georges Pompidou and Autour de l'Extrême, presented by the Maison Européenne de la Photographie were chosen to close the group that is research object of this thesis. Orientador: Claudia Valladão de Mattos Avolese Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: Esta dissertação tem por objetivo estudar ¿ de uma perspectiva da história da arte e da moda ¿ como são constituídas as lojas-conceito da marca de moda japonesa Comme des Garçons conhecidas como guerrilla stores entre os anos de 2004 e 2011. A escolha do corpus justifica-se pela posição que a referida marca ocupa no cenário da moda contemporânea e pela importância do projeto desenvolvido sob o nome de guerrilla stores e a relação estabelecida entre uma dada loja e o tecido urbano no qual foi inserida. A análise do corpus mostrou que as guerrilla stores foram construídas a partir da mobilização de uma série de referências (história da arte e moda) as quais se confundem com o extenso universo da marca Comme des Garçons. Esses espaços experimentais inauguraram ainda um novo conceito, um modelo aberto que, ao reinterpretar diversos modelos distintos de espaços de comercialização, por um lado afirma a legitimidade das ações da marca Comme des Garçons e, por outro, coloca o mesmo modelo sob o escrutínio do sistema da moda que é capaz de se rearticular e adaptar quando uma ruptura como esta é provocada Abstract: This dissertation aims to study - from an art history and fashion perspective - how the concept stores of the Japanese fashion brand Comme des Garçons known as guerrilla stores are constituted between2004 and 2011. Corpus justifies is based on the position that the brand occupies in fashion and the importance of the project developed under the name of guerrilla stores and its relationship established between a given store and the city in which it was inserted. The analysis of the corpus showed that the guerrilla stores were built from the mobilization of a series of references (art history and fashion) which are blurred with the brand itself. These experimental spaces have also inaugurated a new concept, an open model that, by reinterpreting several distinct models of marketing spaces, on the one hand affirms the legitimacy of Comme des Garçons brand actions and, on the other hand, places the same model under the scrutiny of fashion system that is able to rearticulate and adapt when a rupture like this is provoked Mestrado História da Arte Mestre em História

Orientador: Claudia Valladão de Mattos Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: Esta tese de doutorado apresenta uma visão histórico-crítica dos eventos celebrados no México em 1978, que consideramos terem dado lugar à invenção do conceito de 'Fotografia Latino-americana' e tiveram como centro a Primeira Mostra da Fotografia Latino-americana Contemporânea e o Primeiro Colóquio Latino-americano de Fotografia. É nessas reuniões teórico-expositivas onde localizaremos a intenção de impor um novo cânone de compreensão da produção fotográfica do subcontinente, através de um projeto que se apoiou substancialmente na conjuntura política específica da segunda metade do século XX. Nosso propósito estará em apontar as estratégias que fizeram possível a articulação desse novo conceito no universo específico da Arte. Para tal, proporemos a análise pormenorizada das memórias dos debates promovidos durante o Primeiro e Segundo Colóquio Latino-americano de Fotografia (1978-1981) que consideramos essenciais para a construção de um discurso teórico que pretendeu não apenas validar a fotografia como um objeto de estudo relevante e denso, mas também justificar a pertinência do novo conceito e respaldar por meio dele a entrada no contexto internacional de uma produção imagética até então desconhecida. Finalmente, analisaremos a Primeira Mostra da Fotografia Latino-americana Contemporânea (1978) e seu papel na projeção do cânone, a partir de obras escolhidas que consideramos ilustram as particularidades de seu resultado. Com isso almejamos contribuir à compreensão do modo como foi estruturado o projeto de imposição do cânone assim como das problemáticas e dos ganhos que se derivaram dessa iniciativa, que a nosso ver, foi fundamental não só para o desenvolvimento da fotografia no subcontinente, como também para o reconhecimento da fotografia como um complexo objeto de estudo desde o ponto de vista teórico no território, e para a entrada de uma porção relevante da produção fotográfica do subcontinente no sistema da Arte Abstract: The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to present a historically-critical overview of the events held in Mexico in 1978, which we consider to have led to the invention of the concept of 'Latin American Photography' and which have had as their focus the First Exhibition of Contemporary Latin American Photography and the First Latin American Colloquium of Photography. It is at these theoretical-expository meetings where we shall pinpoint the intention to impose a new canon for the understanding of the photographic production of the subcontinent, by means of an effort which relied substantially upon the specific political conjuncture of the second half of the 20th century. We shall further indicate some of the strategies which made it possible to articulate this new concept within the specific universe of Art. For that purpose, we shall thoroughly analyse the records of the debates that took place throughout the First and the Second Colloquium of Latin American Photography (1978-1981), which we regard as essential for the conception of a theoretical discourse that sought not only to validate photography as a relevant and dense object of study, but also to justify this new concept¿s pertinence and, through it, support the entrance of a pictorial production hitherto unknown in the international context. Finally, we shall analyse the First Exhibition of Contemporary Latin American Photography (1978) and its role in promoting the canon, based on our selection of works which, in our view, better ilustrate the peculiarities of the result achieved by the exhibition. With that, we hope to contribute towards the comprehension both of how the design to imposing the canon was concieved, and of the issues and the gains derived from such initiative. That was, according to our understanding, of fundamental importance not only for the development of photography within the subcontinent, but also for the recognition, within the territory, of photography as a complex object of study from the theoretical standpoint, and for the entrance of a relevant part of the subcontinent¿s photografic production in the Art system Doutorado História da Arte Doutora em História CNPQ 870365/1997-5

Esta dissertação abordou a obra desse historiador com o enfoque em seus primeiros escritos, nos quais o Renascimento em Florença aparece como tema principal. A interconexão de Warburg com sua época histórica guiou nossa leitura de seu método, uma história da arte com base na íntima relação entre palavra e imagem Abstract: Aby Warburg is one of the most important art historians of his generation. Currently his work is seen as an important theoretical and methodological framework. The center of his research was the survival of pagan antiquity in the Renaissance. This dissertation approached Warburg¿s work with the focus on his early writings, in which the Renaissance in Florence appears as the main theme. Orientador: Fernando Cury de Tacca Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: Através do personagem fotógrafo, este estudo debruça-se e realiza uma leitura reflexiva de como a presença deste sujeito, capaz de absorver o mundo com seu olhar e o uso da câmera fotográfica, apresenta-se personificado ficcionalmente em narrativas do cinema, da literatura, das histórias em quadrinhos, da poesia e mesmo de telenovelas, modificando o olhar e as ações nas tramas que são narradas, ressignificando as trajetórias daqueles que cruzam seu caminho e olhar. Em seus trajetos, o fotógrafo encontra com a morte, com as artes plásticas, com seus conflitos como sujeito e profissional nas diferentes formas de apresentar sua função. A costura destes caminhos delineou-se a partir do olhar de diferentes teóricos da fotografia e das intercorrências que permeiam estes diferentes personagens. Assim se resume esta pesquisa Abstract: Through the photographer character, this study focuses and carries a reflective reading of how the presence of this professional, able to absorb the world with his view and use of the camera, presents personified fictionally in film narratives, literature, graphic novels, poetry and even in television¿s dramaturgy, changing the look and actions in the plots that are narrated, giving new meaning to the trajectories of those who cross your path and look. In their paths, the photographer meets death, arts and find their own conflicts as subject and professional in the different ways of presenting their function. The stitching of these paths delineated from the look of different theoretical photography and complications that permeate these different characters. A primeira, de natureza artística, é a criação de uma enciclopédia de artistas que, em um primeiro momento, não se difere de outras publicações desse tipo, mas que, na verdade, possui uma característica bastante peculiar. A segunda frente de trabalho, de natureza mais teórica, é a escrita de uma dissertação que analisará o processo de criação dessa enciclopédia e algumas das questões levantadas em sua produção. Orientador: Nelson Alfredo Aguilar Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo estudar a realização de uma exposição de arte específica na história da arte brasileira, a I Bienal Latino-Americana de São Paulo, ocorrida no ano de 1978. A mostra pensada como um espaço de apresentação e discussão dedicado exclusivamente à produção artística da América Latina ocorreu paralelamente às edições internacionais da Bienal de São Paulo. Originalmente, a I Bienal Latino-Americana fora criada com o intuito de substituir as edições das Pré-Bienais, mostras de arte brasileira, que também ocorreram entre os certames internacionais a partir de 1970. As exposições organizadas pela Fundação Bienal de São Paulo na década de 1970 foram consideradas por parte da crítica de arte brasileira de qualidade inferior quando comparadas às edições anteriores. Em parte, a crise enfrentada pela Fundação decorre do difícil período político e social vivido pelo Brasil no momento, com a Ditadura Militar, o cerceamento cultural e boicote às Bienais de São Paulo. Tanto as mostras nacionais quanto a latino-americana exerceram a função de renovar as discussões no cenário artístico nacional e reaver o prestígio das Bienais de São Paulo, abalado com a crise enfrentada pela instituição no período. No entanto, o projeto de valorização da cultura e da arte latino-americana foi prematuramente finalizado no ano de 1980, mesma data em que deveria ocorrer a segunda edição da mostra. A pesquisa se concentrou em estudar o projeto que envolveu a I Bienal Latino-Americana de São Paulo e sua não continuidade, levando em consideração os principais fatores que possibilitaram sua criação, sua organização e realização no ano de 1978 e o seu consequentemente fim no ano de 1980 Abstract: This research project aims at studying the hosting of an specific art exhibition in the Brazilian Art History, the I Latin American Biennial of São Paulo, which happened in 1978. The exhibition was conceived as a space for presentation and discussion exclusively dedicated to Latin American artistic production, and it took place simultaneously to the international editions of Biennial of São Paulo. Originally, the I Latin American Biennial was created to replace the "Pré-Bienais" editions, national art exhibitions that had occurred since 1970 between the international editions. The art exhibitions organized by the Biennial Foundation of São Paulo in 1970s were considered of low quality by Brazilian art critics when compared to previous editions. Partly, the crisis faced by the Foundation derives from the difficult political and social period that Brazil faces at the moment, like the military dictatorship, the cultural curtailment and the boycott of Biennial of São Paulo. Both national exhibitions and Latin American exhibitions had the function of renewing discussions in the national artistic scene and retrieving prestige for Biennial of São Paulo, which had been hard-hit by the institution crisis at that moment. However, the project of valorization of Latin American culture and art was early terminated in 1980, at the same time the second edition of the exhibition would take place. São analisadas quatro obras cujas narrativas tratam de episódios da história colonial paulista: o Monumento à Glória Imortal dos Fundadores de São Paulo, o Monumento às Bandeiras, o Monumento à Fundação de São Paulo e o Monumento a Anchieta. Por meio de um conjunto de documentos produzidos nos concursos públicos, em debates na imprensa, trocas de correspondências e memórias, busco compreender como essas obras foram fabricadas, desde o surgimento da idéia até as estratégias para sua viabilização, levando em conta os diversos conflitos nos momentos de definição do tema, da concepção formal ou da versão escolhida sobre o episódio comemorado. Havia uma pluralidade de interesses que operava na realização desses projetos de monumentos: do escultor, do conselheiro iconográfico, de agentes do poder público, de jornalistas ou de historiadores. A proposta dessa tese é a de construir uma história social dos monumentos celebrativos, do diálogo e das trocas que aconteciam ao longo de sua construção, ao perceber os personagens e analisar as obras como frutos de um processo intensamente negociado Abstract: This study deals with the process involved in the idealization and construction of four celebration monuments at the city of São Paulo during the twentieth century, all related with episodes of the colonial history of São Paulo: the Monumento à Glória Imortal dos Fundadores de São Paulo, the Monumento às Bandeiras, the Monumento à Fundação de São Paulo and the Monumento a Anchieta. Through a set of documents produced either during the public contest, in press debates, correspondence exchanges or in memoirs, I seek to understand how these monuments were produced from the initial idea to the strategies for their development, taking into account the wide range conflicts such as the formal conception or the version of the celebrated episode. I found a wide range of distinct interests that guided the realization of monument's projects: the will of the sculptor, the government iconographic advisor, journalists or historians. Diante desta análise, examinamos a inserção destas pinturas religiosas no contexto histórico, social e artístico da cidade de São Paulo à época de sua produção. O trabalho preocupa-se em aprofundar três questões principais: os temas religiosos abordados por Pennacchi; a influência do Trecento e do Quattrocento nas pinturas religiosas de Pennacchi; a presença das pinturas religiosas de Pennacchi nos anos 1930-1945 e no ambiente artístico paulistano desta época Abstract: The purpose of the present work is to analyze the religious painting of Fulvio Pennacchi produced between the years 1930 and 1945. First, we analyze the religious paintings themselves, regarding their theme and form. Orientador: Claudia Valladão de Mattos Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas Resumo: O presente projeto de pesquisa pretende estudar duas obras específicas do pintor brasileiro Rodolfo Amoedo intituladas O último Tamoio (1883) e Marabá (1882). Tais obras serão analisadas dentro do contexto de sua produção na segunda metade do século XIX buscando identificar aspectos formais e programáticos que as aproximam e ao mesmo tempo afastam da política de criação de uma identidade nacional implementada pela Academia Imperial de Belas Artes no decorrer do século XIX. Buscaremos associar essas pinturas, tão importantes no conjunto da obra de Amoedo, ao ambiente sócio-político e cultural do Brasil oitocentista, investigando suas intenções políticas e culturais no contexto artístico do período. Além disso, interrogaremos tais pinturas na tentativa de reconhecer traços do estilo de Amoedo que as ligassem à sua formação artística tanto no Brasil quanto na Europa, trazendo referências diversas nas áreas da literatura e pintura que contribuíram para sua feitura. Será fundamental investigar como Amoedo desmonta o aparato de exaltação do mito do "índio herói nacional", identificando os traços de um indianismo tardio sem fôlego, esgotado às vésperas da proclamação da República. Para tanto, será importante confrontar literatura e artes plásticas dentro das premissas do ut pictura poesis, visto que naquela floresceu primeiro o que se convencionou chamar de "indianismo". Propomos uma reflexão sobre a figura do índio melancólico e trágico das pinturas supracitadas de Amoedo em detrimento do índio heróico e guerreiro da produção literária do período anterior e seu papel na constituição de um imaginário nacional que tinha o índio como símbolo pátrio: através das diversas ressiginificações por que passou o corpo indígena, seja no campo da pintura e da escultura, seja no campo da ilustração e da literatura, analisaremos como Amoedo se insere como renovador do indianismo acadêmico, rearranjando os elementos próprios da retórica nacionalista no final do Segundo Império Abstract: This research project aims to study two specific works of the Brazilian painter Rodolfo Amoedo titled The Last Tamoio (1883) and Maraba (1882). Such works will be examined within the context of his production in the second half of the nineteenth century trying to identify formal and programmatic aspects which approach and at the same time move back them from the creation policy of a national identity implemented by the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts during the nineteenth century. Trying to associate these paintings, very important in Amoedo's whole works, to the social, political and cultural environment of nineteenth century on Brazil, looking for his political and cultural intentions in the artistic context of that period. Furthermore we will study such paintings trying to recognize aspects of Amoedo's style that link them to his artistic development both in Brazil and in Europe, bringing different references in literature and painting areas which was a contribution to its conception. It will be essential to investigate how Amoedo disjoints the apparatus of exaltation of the "national Indian hero" myth, identifying aspects of a late breathless "indianism", exhausted on the eve of the Republic's proclamation. Therefore, it will be important to confront literature and fine arts within the premise of ut pictura poesis, since that first grew what is conventionally called "indianism". We propose a reflection about the image of the melancholic and tragic indian of the Amoedo's paintings above in detriment of the heroic and warrior indian of the literary production of the previous period and their role in the constitution of a national imaginary that used to have indian as a native symbol: through the different reinventions of its meaning which passed the indigenous body, whether in painting and sculpture, or in the field of illustration and literature, we are going to analyze how Amoedo introduces himself as a re-newer of the academic indianism, rearranging the specific elements of the nationalist rhetoric at the end of the Second Empire Mestrado História da Arte Mestre em História da Arte

Orientador: Maria de Fátima Morethy Couto Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: Este trabalho propõe um estudo sobre atividade artística de Anita Malfatti dos anos de 1920, com o objetivo de analisar a inserção dessa produção no debate sobre arte moderna do período e o posterior reflexo desse debate nos principais estudos sobre o Modernismo no Brasil. Essa análise pressupõe uma reflexão sobre a recepção crítica em torno da obra da artista, desde a primeira apresentação ao público brasileiro, até a exposição individual realizada em 1929, que apresentou um panorama geral de sua produção artística. Considerando que a relevância de Anita Malfatti na história da arte brasileira está pontuada entre 1917 e a Semana de Arte Moderna, procuramos abordar as obras realizadas durante o estágio em Paris, entre 1923 e 1928, analisando o diálogo dessa produção com algumas discussões em pauta nesses anos: a relação com a Europa, o nacionalismo, o debate entre tendências mais radicais ou mais moderadas no contexto da arte moderna Abstract: This study focuses on the artistic activity of Anita Malfatti in the 1920s. The main objective of this thesis is to analyze the relevance of her works in the modern art debate of the period, and the subsequent impact of this debate in the Modernism studies in Brazil. This analysis implies an understanding of the art criticism around her work, from the first presentation to the Brazilian public, until the exhibition held in 1929, which presented an overview of her artistic production. Orientador: Claudia Valladão de Matos Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: Este trabalho apresenta uma contribuição para a análise do jogo de relações que se estabeleceu entre a pintura produzida no contexto brasileiro do século XIX e a produção internacional, especialmente francesa, centrando-nos na trajetória artística do pintor Oscar Pereira da Silva. A trajetória desse artista foi marcada por diversas idas e vindas entre Brasil e França, fazendo do artista um verdadeiro tradutor do sistema artístico francês para o contexto brasileiro. Desta forma, a partir da escolha da obra, "Escrava Romana", como "chave-mestra" para o desenvolvimento do debate em questão que se baseia o fluxo argumentativo da pesquisa. Razão que é justificável por esta tela representar um exemplar do primor técnico do estudo acadêmico do pintor brasileiro durante sua estádia com os mestres franceses, principalmente o pintor Jean- Léon Gérôme, que possui uma gama de obras que versam a temática explorada pelo objeto central de estudo. O segundo e último motivo se resguarda por se tratar de uma obra de grande impacto visual que compõe a galeria da Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo e ser um belíssimo representante da mais clássica das atividades do currículo da arte acadêmica do século XIX, a representação do nu Abstract: This work presents a contribution for the relation's analysis between the masterpieces made inside the Brazilian's context on the 19th century and the international art's production, specially in France, focussing in the artistic path of the painter Oscar Pereira da Silva. The artist's life had a closer relation with France, making the painter a true translator of the French artistic model to Brazil. By choosing a particular painting as a methodological matter, the "Escrava Romana" became the "master key" for the research. To justify, this canvas is a perfect model of academic studies during his learning period with the French masters, specially Jean-Léon Gérôme, artist who developed a great number of canvas with the same thematic. Analisa ainda o perfil artístico de três ilustradores: Santa Rosa, Luís Jardim e Aldemir Martins e seus respectivos projetos ilustrativos para Cacau, de Jorge Amado (1933); Menino de engenho, de José Lins do Rego (1932); e Vidas secas, de Graciliano Ramos (1938). Orientador: Claudia Valladão de Mattos Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas Resumo: ¿Arte fotográfica e liberdade de expressão: um diálogo entre o Brasil e Cuba ¿ aborda o desenvolvimento da fotografia latino-americana na segunda metade do século XX, a partir de um estudo comparativo e da análise de obras de fotógrafos cubanos e brasileiros, atuantes durante o período 1960-1990. O texto se divide em três grandes partes, correspondentes, cada uma delas, a um decênio, tomando como ponto de partida os gêneros de destaque em cada etapa e as relações destas produções com o contexto histórico e sócio-político em que se desenvolvem. No primeiro capítulo, a partir do conceito de 'fotojornalismo' são analisadas as obras dos artistas cubanos Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez (Korda) e Raúl Corrales, conjuntamente com as dos criadores brasileiros Antônio Luiz Benck Vargas e Evandro Teixeira. No segundo capítulo, tomando como base o conceito de 'fotografia antropológica¿ são submetidas à análise as obras dos artistas brasileiros Walter Firmo, Assis Hoffmann e Claudia Andujar, assim como a produção da fotógrafa cubana María Eugenia Haya (Marucha). Por fim, o terceiro e último capítulo da dissertação parte do desenvolvimento de poéticas de autor por parte dos artistas da câmera na década de 80, e a partir de diversos critérios se aproxima de forma crítica à obra dos fotógrafos cubanos Rogélio López Marín (Gory), Ramón Martínez Grandal e Mario García Joya (Mayito), assim como do artista brasileiro Clóvis Loureiro Junior. Abstract: ¿Photographic art and freedom of expression: a dialogue between Brazil and Cuba ¿ discusses the development of Latin American photography in the second half of the twentieth century, from a comparative study and the analysis of works of Brazilian and Cuban photographers, working in the period of 1960-1990. The text is divided into three major parts, corresponding, each of them, to a decade, taking as a starting point the notable genres featured at every stage, and the relationship of these productions with the historical and socio-political context in which they develop. In the first chapter, from the concept of 'photojournalism' the works of the Cuban artists Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez (Korda) and Raul Corrales, together with the Brazilian creators Luiz Antônio Vargas Benck and Evandro Teixeira are analyzed. In the second chapter, building on the concept of 'anthropological photography' the works of the Brazilian artists Walter Firmo, Assis Hoffmann and Claudia Andujar, as well as the production of the Cuban photographer Maria Eugenia Haya (Marucha) are put under analysis. Finally, the third and final chapter of the dissertation is based on the development of author poetics by the artists of the camera in the 80's, and using several criteria, we approaches critically to the work of the Cuban photographers Rógelio López Marín (Gory), Ramón Martínez Grandal and Mario García Joya (Mayito), as well as the Brazilian artist Clóvis Loureiro Junior. Orientador: Claudia Valladão de Mattos Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: Esta tese discute a forma com a qual a representação do "louco" e da loucura foi construída nas imagens de quatro fotógrafos que realizaram ensaios fotográficos em Hospitais Psiquiátricos brasileiros no século XX - Alice Brill (1950), Leonid Streliaev (1971), Claudio Edinger (1989-90) e Claudia Martins (1997) - com o objetivo de explicitar a concepção de loucura subjacente às imagens, bem como pontuar elementos naturalizados nestas construções. Partindo da análise de conteúdo e iconográfica, da pesquisa sobre a tradição de representação do "louco" e da loucura na produção cultural imagética do ocidente, do estudo das implicações que a técnica fotográfica por si suscita, da análise história de veiculação e recepção das imagens, bem como de seus contextos culturais de produção; foi possível pontuar conceitos e pressupostos subjacentes à construção formal da representação do "louco" e da loucura nas imagens de cada um dos fotógrafos estudados. Este estudo permitiu identificar que elementos tradicionais de representação foram acessados pelos fotógrafos estudados, num movimento de perpetuação de formas tipificadas de compreender o diverso. Por outro lado, foi possível verificar que novos elementos compositivos surgiram relacionados com contextos específicos. Assim, este estudo, contribuindo para o desvelamento de formas tipificadas de representação do "louco" e da loucura, almeja representar um esforço no sentido de ampliar as possibilidades de crítica às construções imagéticas que circulam na sociedade, bem como para o questionamento de formas naturalizadas de apreensão destes sujeitos. Abstract: This thesis discusses ways in which the representation of madmen and madness was built on images taken by four photographers who created photographic essays in Brazilian psychiatric hospitals during the twentieth-century - Alice Brill (1950), Leonid Streliaev (1971), Claudio Edinger (1989 -90) and Claudia Marshall (1997) - in order to unveil underlying social concepts about madness, while also highlighting specific elements that were naturalized in these constructions. The method was based on content analysis and iconographic research, We studied the traditional ways Western culture represents the insane in visual productions, and the implications raised by photographic techniques. We examined the history of transmission and reception of the images and the cultural contexts in which they emerged, so as to understand concepts and assumptions underlying the formal construction of the representation of the mad in the images of the photographers that were selected for this study. The results showed that traditional elements were accessed by the photographers, as a means of perpetuating characteristic modes of understanding diversity. Nevertheless, we observed that new compositional elements emerged, related to specific contexts. By questioning the naturalized ways that society has come to apprehend madness, by critically discussing the construction of images of madmen that circulate in society, our aim was to contribute to the unveiling of typified forms of representation of the mad and madness. Orientador: Nelson Alfredo Aguilar Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas Resumo: Encontra-se, nessa tese, o estudo das obras premiadas nos Salões Municipais de Belas Artes (SMBAs) de Belo Horizonte na década de 1960 e a transformação do SMBA em Salão Nacional de Arte Contemporânea (SNAC) em 1969. Para tanto, tornou-se necessário o entendimento das modificações do cenário artístico de Belo Horizonte iniciadas pelos confrontos entre acadêmicos, representados por Aníbal Matos, e os modernos reunidos nas exposições: Zina Aita em 1920, Salão Bar Brasil 1936, Exposição Moderna em 1944. Entende-se como a consolidação da arte moderna a vinda de Alberto da Veiga Guignard para fundar uma Escola de Artes, assim com as medidas modernizadoras de Juscelino Kubstchek, enquanto prefeito da capital mineira. Esse cenário e pinturas desses artistas são estudados na primeira parte da tese. Na década de 1960, os SMBAs abandonam o viés regional e passam a contar com a participação de artistas e críticos fundamentalmente do Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo. Para a compreensão desses acontecimentos, são analisadas as pinturas premiadas, nos Salões Municipais de Belas Artes, responsáveis por constituir o acervo do Museu de Arte da Pampulha. Para finalizar a tese, buscou-se compreender a emergência da arte contemporânea, na capital mineira, através do estudo das manifestações: Vanguarda Brasileira (1966), Objeto e Participação e Do Corpo à Terra (1970) que propunham a destruição do suporte do objeto artístico, da desmaterialização da obra de arte, assim como o questionamento dos SMBAs. Abstract: This thesis is about the study of masterpieces awarded at the Fine Arts Municipal Salons of Belo Horizonte (SMBAs) in the 1960s and the transformation of the SMBA into The Contemporay Art National Salon (SNAC) of Belo Horizonte in 1969. To make it possible, it was necessary to understand the modifications of the artistic scene of Belo Horizonte considering the relations among the academic experts, represented by Aníbal Matos and the modern ones present in exhibitions such as: Zita Aita 1920, Salão Bar Brasil, 1936, Exposição Moderna 1944. The starting points of the modern art consolidation can be considered when Alberto da Veiga Guignard inaugurated a School of arts and the fact that that Juscelino Kubstchek, the major of Belo Horizonte (the capital of the State of Minas Gerais) had modern politics. That scene and the paintings of the artists are studied in the first part of this thesis. In the 1960s, the SMBAs spread their influence beyond the region and receive participations of artists and critics especially from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. To understand these events better, some awarded paintings are analyzed in the SMBA, responsible for keeping the Pampulha Art Musem objects. To conclude the thesis, there was an attempt to understand the emergency of the contemporary arts in the capital of Minas Gerais through the study of some art events such as: Vanguarda Brasileira 1966, Objeto e Participação and Do Corpo à Terra 1970. Orientadores: Claudia Valladão de Mattos, Luise Weiss Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: Quando arquivamos o nosso passado, catalogamos cada momento da nossa experiência e gravamos nossas lembranças, estamos abrindo um processo de resgate das nossas tradições, assim como o colecionador que recolhe e conserva uma série de objetos. A procura de estratégias para preservar a memória por meio de coleções sempre interessou à humanidade. Na nossa tradição ocidental ela remonta aos tempos do studiolo medieval italiano. É esta busca por estratégias de preservação da memória que norteia a coleção ¿Mnemoteca ¿ Uma Biblioteca de Testemunhos¿ que compõe a obra ¿Herbário Mnemosine¿. Ela desenvolve plasticamente aspectos dos conceitos de arquivo e de coleção botânica e, utilizando técnicas de arquivamento botânico, pretende funcionar como um arquivo que documentará e preservará a memória afetiva de amigos e parentes, vinculadas a algum tipo de planta (árvore, flor, vegetação, etc.). Esse processo desenvolve-se por meio de ¿Exsicatas Mnemônicas¿, isto é, pranchas de parafina com impressões elaboradas com o exemplar botânico da planta indicada e o texto das lembranças afetivas entregues pelas pessoas envolvidas no trabalho. Como os espécimes botânicos, essas pranchas serão classificadas em unidades taxonômicas próprias, de acordo com as afinidades dos participantes. As pranchas foram executadas por meio de uma técnica que venho desenvolvendo e pesquisando há algum tempo, a qual denominei ¿Gravura de Vestígios¿: impressões de materiais diversos em matrizes de argila que são gravados em placas de parafina, fazendo uma referência à concepção de memória como escritura Abstract: Whenever we file our past, sort each moment within our experience and record our memories, we initiate a process of recovering our traditions, just as a collector who harvests and keeps a series of objects. The search for memory preservation strategies through collections was always of interest for mankind. Our western tradition goes back to the times of the Italian medieval studiolo. It is this search that guides the collection ¿Mnemotheca ¿ A testimony library¿ that composes the work ¿Mnemosine Herbarium¿. This collection visually develops aspects of the archive and botanical collection concepts and, making use of botanical filing techniques, intends to function as a file that will document and maintain the affective memory of friends and relatives, linked to any kind of plant (tree, flower, vegetation, etc.). This process unfolds through ¿Exsicatas Mnemônicas¿, that is, paraffin boards with imprints elaborated with the botanical sample of the indicated plant and the text related to the affective memories delivered by the people involved in the work. Just as botanical specimens, these boards will be organized in their own taxonomic groups, according to the participants affinity. The boards were made through a technique I have been developing and researching for some time, which I have named ¿Vestige Imprinting¿, different material prints in clay matrices imprinted in paraffin boards, referring to the notion of memory as writing Mestrado Mestre em Artes

Orientador: Lygia Arcuri Eluf Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes Resumo: Este trabalho de pesquisa em Arte surge a partir da experiência da gravura, seu pensamento construtivo e seus processos; somando-se a este fazer o repertório visual, material e técnico da cerâmica. A moldagem através da impressão de placas de argila e do despejo de barbotina permite a criação de séries de módulos múltiplos que uma vez entintados revelam a imagem impressa em relevo. A submissão da terra à múltiplos processos de queima aponta para uma dimensão ritualística e intrínsecamente metafísica, a qual, tradicionalmente, acompanha a transfiguração do barro em matéria cerâmica. A temática de todas as séries apresentadas é a paisagem local, tendo o ateliê como ponto de partida - e através de fragmentos vegetais e minerais esta paisagem é poeticamente reconstruída. Abstract: This Art research work has roots in the experience of printmaking, its processes and constructive thinking, adding to it ceramics' visual references, techniques and materials. Molding through slip casting and imprints in clay slabs allows to create series of multiple modular shapes that once tinted with pigments reveal the image in relief. Clay's submission to multiple processes of firing points towards an intrinsec, ritualistic and metaphysical dimension wich traditionally follows the transformation of clay matter into ceramics. The subject of all series presented is the local landscape, having the art studio as starting point - and trough vegetal and mineral fragments this landscape is poetically reconstructed. Orientador: Luciano Migliaccio Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas Resumo: A origem deste estudo são as obras Marinha com barco (1895) e Paisagem com rio e barco ao seco em São Paulo 'Ponte Grande¿ (1895) de autoria de Giovanni Castagneto. Este se inicia com um breve histórico da pintura de marinha correlacionando a produção européia e brasileira. Em seguida, analisamos a produção do artista sob a prática da pintura de série, pois é possível identificar nas obras do pintor uma freqüente repetição de motivos. A partir disto avaliamos a série 'barcos ao seco¿ realizada pelo pintor ao longo de sua carreira e na qual incluímos as obras acima. Por fim, tratamos do período em que o artista expôs em São Paulo e as relações estabelecidas no ambiente cultural paulista. O trajeto foi necessário tanto para uma compreensão da produção paulista e de sua importância no meio artístico da cidade de São Paulo, bem como perceber o lócus do pintor no panorama da pintura de paisagem marinha e no meio artístico brasileiro do século XIX Abstract: Giovanni Castagneto's Marinha com barco (1895) and Paisagem com rio e barco ao seco em São Paulo 'Ponte Grande' (1895) are the origin of this present study which begins with a brief story of seascape co-relating both the European and Brazilian productions. The following step consists on the analysis of the artist's production under the practice of his serial paintings due to the possibility of identification of a frequent repetition of motives in the painter's works. From this point, we evaluate the series 'barcos ao seco' released by the painter throughout his career and which includes the paintings mentioned previously. Finally, we focus on the period in which the artist exhibited in São Paulo and the relationship established in the cultural environment of the city. This course was necessary for a deeper comprehension of the painter's production in São Paulo as well as his importance in the forming cultural class. Orientador: Luciano Migliaccio Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas Resumo: Esta pesquisa enfoca o grupo escultórico monumental Cristo e a mulher adúltera, de Rodolfo Bernardelli (Guadalajara, México, 1852 ¿ Rio de Janeiro RJ, 1931). Realizado em Roma entre 1881 e 1884, é considerado pela crítica como a sua obra-prima. Nosso projeto procurou estabelecer ligações entre essa escultura, outras obras do artista no mesmo período e a arte italiana e francesa contemporânea. Outro objetivo desse projeto foi a análise da importância do estágio italiano do escultor, enquanto pensionista da Academia Imperial de Belas Artes do Rio de Janeiro em Roma, entre 1877 e 1885, para melhor conhecimento acerca da vertente realista a qual o artista se filiou. Além de procurar inserir a produção de Rodolfo Bernardelli no contexto histórico e artístico em que foi realizada, nos últimos anos do Segundo Reinado, a pesquisa buscou a compreensão do papel desses trabalhos na constituição da cultura visual do Brasil daqueles anos Abstract: This research deals with Rodolfo Bernardelli's (Guadalajara, Mexico, 1852 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1931) monumental group of sculptures called "Christ and the adulteress". Sculpted in Roma between 1881 and 1884 it is considered by the critics as his master piece. Our project intends to stablish links among this sculpture, some other works of the artist made in the same period and the contemporary French and Italian arts. Another aim of this project was to analize Bernardelli's Italian apprenticeship, sponsored by the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes do Rio de Janeiro in Rome between 1877 and 1885, in order to grasp better understanding of the realistic school to which the artist connected himself. Orientador : Luiz Cesar Marques Filho Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas Resumo: O objetivo principal deste estudo é a análise do contexto histórico e artístico em que foram realizadas duas telas pertencentes ao Museu de Arte de São Paulo, cópias de quadros de Paolo Veronese (1528-1588): Hércules entre o Vício e a Virtude e Alegoria da Sabedoria e da Força, pintadas por François Boucher (1703-1770). Os originais foram pintados por volta de 1576 e pertencem atualmente à Frick Collection, de Nova Iorque. As cópias pintadas por Boucher foram realizadas quando os originais estavam na Coleção do Regente da França, sendo datadas de a partir de 1752. As cópias de Veronese do século XVIII pertencem a um contexto histórico europeu de revalorização da pintura veneziana do século XVI. Esta ocorreu não apenas através de Sebastiano Ricci, que retoma a poética dos mestres venezianos do século XVI, mas também através da irradiação das obras de Rubens no contexto francês do século XVIII, através de artistas como Watteau, Coypel, La Fosse. Através dos debates na Academia francesa em tomo da supremacia da linha ou do colorido e da admiração pela obra de Rubens, a Paris do século XVIII redescobriu a sensibilidade cromática veneziana e a poética de seus mestres do Renascimento. O colecionismo e a possibilidade de acesso dos artistas franceses do século XVIII a estas obras venezianas foi outro fator importante. Pelos motivos abordados, as cópias de Boucher assumem assim um caráter paradigmático. A pintura francesa da segunda metade do século XVIII iria traçar caminhos muitos diferentes Abstract: The main aim of this study is the anaIysis of both the historicaI and the artistic context of production of two paintings beIonging to the Art Museum of São Paulo. They are copies, painted by François Boucher (1703-1770), of previous paintings by PaoIo Veronese (1528-1588): Hercules between Vice and Virtue and Allegory of Wisdom and Strength. The originaIs were painted around 1576. Nowadays theyare at the Frick Collection in New Y orIe. The copies painted by Boucher were made while the originaIs were at the Collection ofthe Regent ofFrance. In this way, they are dated to the years around 1752. The 18th century copies of Veronese's paintings should be set within a context of European reappraisal of 16th century venetian painting. This reappraisal happened through Sebastiano Ricci's retaken of 16th century venetian masters poetics and through the irradiation ofRubens paintings, which happened in 18th centuty France through artists like Watteau, Coypel and La Fosse. The debates that took place in the French Academy, regarding the supremacy either of the line or the color, and the admiration that Ruben's works received, made it possible, in 18th century Paris, to happen the rediscovery of venetian chromatic sensibility and of its Renascence masters poetics. "Collecting" and the accessibility to these paintings by french artists of the 18th century were other essential factors for these rediscoveries.
