Abstract

Ten years after Virtual Environment research started with NASA's VIEW project, these techniques are now exploited in industry to speed up product development cycles, to ensure higher product quality, and to encourage early training on and for new products. Especially the automotive industry, but also the oil and gas industry are driving the use of these techniques in their works. The papers in this volume reflect all the different tracks of the workshop: reviewed technical papers as research contributions, summaries on panels of VE applications in the automotive, the medical, the telecommunication and the geoscience field, a panel discussing VEs as the future workspace, invited papers from experts reporting from VEs for entertainment industry, for media arts, for supercomputing and productivity enhancement. Short industrial case studies, reporting very briefly from ongoing industrial activities complete this state of the art snapshot.

Abstract

New therapies, such as cell implants, will in future require teleoperators capable of repeatable positioning accuracy of 10 mm and better. This paper describes the design of a Stewart platform (hexapod robot system) which can be used for precision microsurgery in a number of different medical disciplines. The system design is discussed in detail and an overview of potential applications is given. Also, results are reported on the application in neuroendoscopy.

Abstract

The better understanding of the systems of the human body and their specific functions has led to minimally invasive and microsurgical procedures being carried out on an ever smaller scale. New therapies will require precision of 10 microm or better, which will only be achievable with robotic teleoperators. Experience with existing robot-assisted surgery systems shows that the human-machine interface is a critical component for acceptance of this technology, but no universally satisfactory interface has yet been found. Therefore, this article investigates a new concept based on kinesthetic motion feedback and presents details of the implementation of a first prototype.

Der Aufsatz beschreibt Arbeiten am IPA zum Einsatz von Virtual Reality in der minimal invasiven Chirurgie. Im Vordergrund stehen Methoden, die dem Chirurgen eine bessere raumliche Visualisierung und Orientierung bieten. Zusatzlich werden Moglichkeiten beschrieben, um Virtual Reality fur die Steuerung von chirurgischen Werkzeugen und zur Simulation von Operationen einzusetzen.
