Es ist wohl kein Zufall, dass ich mich daran noch gut erinnere: Am 21. Juni 2000 versammelten sich am Flughafen in Wien-Schwechat vor dem Gate A 17 fur den Flug BA 8403 nach Birmingham fast ausschlieslich jungere und junge enthusiastische Wissenschaftler*innen, die zur dritten Crossroads in Cultural Studies-Konferenz flogen. Das 1998 lancierte ministerielle Forschungsprogramm Cultural Studies/Kulturwissenschaften hatte die Aufbruchsstimmung noch weiter befordert und so flog ein etwa zwanzigkopfiges osterreichischen Team nach England, zum Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) der University of Birmingham, das 1964 von Richard Hoggart gegrundet worden war und in dem Stuart Hall seit 1968 – und bis zur Schliesung 2002 – Direktor war. Voller Ideen, aber auch voller Erwartungen wollten wir in das Zentrum der Cultural Studies, die nichts weniger als die wissenschaftliche Einlosung unserer 68er- oder Post-68er-Erwartungen versprachen: Eine engagierte, linke, interventionistische, transdisziplinare und parteinehmende Forschung zu aktuellen Entwicklungen und mit dem Fokus auf Popularkulturen schien moglich.

Blicken wir kurz in die letzten Jahre des vorigen Jahrtausends zuruck: Das Projekt der Cultural Studies war im britischen Raum langst etabliert, wenn auch am Rande der wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen. Und es war mit einzelnen Bastionen auch schon in den USA und in einigen Stadten Europas (so auch in Wien) prasent.

From the end of the nineteenth century South Africa had become a popular touring destination for British and colonial sports teams. Tours in the popular sport of cricket, football and rugby were very popular. These tours tested local opposition against foreign competition, brought in revenue to local and national sports associations and contributed to the development of a white South African identity. Austrian football teams were extensive travellers and popular attractions around the world. Prior to the Second World War Austrian football was highly regarded and was able to compete and hold its own against English and Scottish clubs and representative teams. This article considers an unusual tour by a combined Viennese football team to South Africa in 1936. We consider the preparations for the tour, the different playing styles and the way in which the visitors were received around the country. Auf der Basis von Daten zu mehr als 600 jüdischen Funktionären und Funktionärinnen werden am Beispiel Wiens Fragen von jüdischer Selbst- und Fremdcharakterisierung untersucht. Sport, als wichtiger Ort urbaner Identitätspolitik, liefert ein facettenreiches Bild der Auseinandersetzungen mit „Jewish difference“. Im Mittelpunkt stehen besonders massenwirksame Sportarten, vor allem Fußball, aber auch Schwimmen, Boxen, und der Arbeitersport., Based on information about more than 600 Viennese Jewish officials, the book examines issues related to the self-characterization and outside characterization of Jews in Vienna. Sports are an important part of urban identity politics, providing a multifaceted image of engagement with Jewish “difference.” The study focuses on mass consumption sports, especially football, but includes swimming, boxing, and workers’ sports.

Research on Jewish life in Vienna prior to the Holocaust understandably focuses on places, where it predominantly took place: the Leopoldstadt and the city centre. This view fails to consider the suburb, an area that reflects spatial aspects of Jewish life and does not evoke the connotations typically associated with being Jewish but is instructive as it regards questions of »Jewish difference«. Based on the biographies of two Jewish sports officials, the article shows that (Jewish) difference was defined primarily by parameters of space which manifest as »Bodenständigkeit« (being native): In actual fact, at least in the field of popular culture, ascriptions to a non-Jewish suburb were more powerful than the Jewishness of the officials: In self-perceptions as well as in external ascriptions the meanings of Jewishness were informed by suburban affiliations.

In Austria sports history is situated between history (which is not interested in sports) and physical education (which is no longer interested in history). Although sports history enjoyed a long tradition at Vienna University, academic research in the field trickled to a halt in the 1980s. From the beginning of the 1990s, however, a new sports history emerged in the work of academic freelancers who came from different research disciplines. On the basis of this interdisciplinary approach they established a wide-ranging field of research based primarily on the work of Pierre Bourdieu and the British model of cultural studies. Initially, their work dealt with the obvious topic of soccer, but over the last decade, the focus has broadened to embrace questions of nationalism, migration, masculinity and gender, body politics, and space as well as other forms of sport and the nature of sporting cultures in general.

An event like EURO 2008 does not merely consist of the final round, its participants, the stadiums and the public viewing areas; it does not only consist of lucky fans who could get hold of a ticket, not‐so‐lucky fans who must content themselves with large screen displays, and apparent or actual hooligans. Away from the big stages, there are people and groups who are not allowed to be in attendance and there are teams or ‘local heroes’ for whom qualification or even every point scored in the qualification is already a sensation. In this article, I present examples of how an event like EURO 2008 also constructs identities, provides structures and defines inclusions and exclusions beyond the aforementioned powerful discourses and demonstrate that it is not a matter of consequences of one‐sided normative power, but of hegemonic processes of negotiation in which open or subtle acts of resistances materialize. I exemplify this with the case of the small football country Malta.

Im Folgenden gilt es eine Brucke zu schlagen, die – kulturgeografisch formuliert – nicht zwangslaufig so gebaut werden muss, wie sie von den Cultural Studies errichtet wird. Der Bruckenbau ist, soll das Bauwerk langerfristig tragfahig sein, ein komplexes Unterfangen, das umfangreiche Denkarbeit erfordert. In den Cultural Studies hat sich dafur in der Abfolge von Theoretisierung, Bricolage und Dekonstruktion ein mogliches – und keineswegs unhinterfragtes – Schema ausgebildet, das sich als Ortsbestimmung, Abwagung der Alternativen und schlieslich Zeichnen eines Bauplanes beschreiben lasst.

Much has been written about the 'production' of sexuality in Nazi Germany; the specific ways of constructing male heroes and frail (but also strong) women coming together in a cold and distant way in the service of eugenics and a new society. Thus it was a national and political concept of sexuality in the narrow sense whereby sexuality was inextricably linked with the benefit of 'Volk, Reich und Vaterland'. But an analysis of private photographs and the 'unpolitical' sections of the newspapers of the period reveals elements of love and eroticism which indicate that, even in the Nazi context, the notion of an essential sexuality can be questioned. This article, on the one hand, discusses sexuality in the Nazi era from official and private photographs and, on the other hand, makes observations about the actuality of the Nazi concept even in (post)modern societies. The aim of the article is to look at a specific aspect of normality to obtain a more precise understanding of the Nazi era. In retrospect, confrontation with the National Socialist era takes shape in images of an erratic bloc: National Socialist ideology and its brutal execution do not seem to allow withdrawal. In the case of resistance, it is only imaginable as a political action with all of its consequences and not as a tolerated freedom or resistant reading. This is based on a view of the National Socialist era constructed by capitalist as well as real socialist society. National Socialism is not merely portrayed in its inhumanity, but stylized as pure 'evil' for use as a negative example in contrast to one's own code of honour. This is particularly true of the terrain of sexuality and seduction, love and eroticism. It would appear that the political ideals were formulated too obviously, the production of approved sexuality and reproduction dictatorially staged too clearly (Bleuel, 1972; Czarnowski, 1991) to allow any divergences from the

There is no land like Austria, where up until the 1940s premier league football was limited to one city, Vienna. But even up until the 1960s, Austrian football was first and foremost Viennese soccer—and today it is still characterized by resentments between Vienna and the rest of the country. This article discusses the changes from the 1930s—when football was one of some few moments of Viennese identity—to the 1950s—when sports (not primarily football) was a main part of creating an Austrian identity—until today—when the globalization of football begins to burst open the specific Viennese situation.

Der Pariser Mai steht metonymisch fur die Studentenrevolte der 1960er Jahre, die auch im Verhaltnis zur »internationalistisch« ausgerichteten Arbeiterbewegung des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts — als erste transnationale Protestbewegung gelten darf: »Weltweit zog damals eine studentische Protestbewegung die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich: von Berkeley bis Rom, von Tokio bis Berlin« (Wehler, 312). Getragen wurde sie uberwiegend — daher die Klassifikation als Studentenrevolte oder -bewegung von — jungen Leuten aus dem akademischen Betrieb, aber auch Auszubildende, Schuler und Berufstatige engagierten sich in einer ansonsten eher protestarmen Zeit. Im Monat Mai des Jahres 1968 verdichtete sich in Paris eine Serie von Protesten, die von 1964 bis in die 1970er Jahre um die ganze Welt gingen, mit telegenen »Barrikadennachten« in der franzosischen Hauptstadt aber eine besondere Intensitat und Dramatik entwickelten und wohl am starksten das etablierte politische System durch eine Allianz mit linksgerichteten Arbeitnehmer-Gewerkschaften und Generalstreik herausforderten. Der damals amtierende Staatsprasident Charles de Gaulle hatte seine Demission erwogen (sie erfolgte ein Jahr spater), der um ihn herum gruppierte Gaullismus konnte sich nicht mehr als fuhrende Kraft halten. Aber auch sein Antipode, die Kommunistische Partei Frankreichs, wurde von der antiautoritaren Revolte als alterskrank und sklerotisch ins Visier genommen; zudem sammelten sich linksradikale Sekten trotzkistischer, maoistischer und anarchistischer Provenienz, die nur wenige Mitglieder hatten, aber bis weit ins linksburgerliche Milieu Einfluss gewannen.

Im Laufe eines Jahrhunderts haben sich die unterschiedlichen Bereiche des (Massen-)Sports und der (Massen-)Medien immer enger verwoben. Die Geschichte dieser Symbiose wird hier am Beispiel Österreichs nachgezeichnet Im Zuge einer verspäteten Modernisierung trafen kurz vor 1900 in der österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie zwei Phänomene aufeinander, die das folgende Jahrhundert prägen sollten: die Massenpresse als Ausgangspunkt der späteren Massenmedien und der aus Großbritannien importierte Sport als Vorläufer des späteren Massensports. Deren Verknüpfung von einer zunächst losen Verbindung zu einem symbiotischen Sport-Medien-Komplex soll in der Folge am Beispiel Österreichs kurz nachgezeichnet werden.

„I always was a fan of shocking pink!“ bekennt Valerie Walkerdine (1997a: 52) in einem ihrer Bucher. Dieses personliche Gestandnis ist keine unpassende Anmerkung, sondern hat sowohl Methode wie weitreichende Implikationen fur die Autorin: Die in Grosbritannien geborene und in einem typisch britischen Arbeiterhaushalt aufgewachsene Walkerdine macht seit gut 20 Jahren, seit sie von einer Grundschullehrerin zu einer Universitatsprofessorin wurde (zunachst in London, spater in Australien und derzeit in Cardiff), ihre Biografie zum Ausgangspunkt, die Beschaftigung mit Subjektivitat und Subjektivierung zum Inhalt ihrer Arbeit. Dazu bedient sich die Psychologin, die sich der von ihr mitentwickelten „Critical Psychology“ zuordnet, einer bunten Werkzeugkiste aus Psychoanalyse und Feminismus, Marxismus und Cultural Studies, aber auch poststrukturalistischer Konzepte bis hin zu Jean Baudrillard und Gilles Deleuze.

Fragen nach Identitat und Selbst-Bewusstsein sind in den vergangenen gut 20 Jahren zum bevorzugten Thema sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Analysen geworden. Doch schiest die Abwendung von der Vorstellung stabiler Identitaten und die Forcierung von Modellen der Fragmentierung und von Patchwork-Identitaten ubers Ziel hinaus, denn die Intensitat und Stosrichtung der Diskussion korreliert nur zum Teil der Selbstwahrnehmung (post-)moderner Subjekte: Wahrend theoretische Modelle und Konzepte von einer generellen Krise im Verhaltnis von Individuen zu ihren Umwelten, zur Gesellschaft oder zur ‚Welt‘ schlechthin ausgehen, so dass personliche Unsicherheit oder Fragmentierung, kollektive Instabilitat oder das Schwinden lokaler bzw. nationaler Bewusstheit das aktuelle Selbst charakterisieren (Hall 1996; Hettlage 2000), versuchen sich viele Individuen in ihrer Eigenwahrnehmung, auch wenn sie mehr oder minder massive Storungen ihrer Autonomie erleben, doch weiterhin als bewusst, rational und autonom handelnde Subjekte zu begreifen. So lasst sich oft feststellen, dass Menschen den generellen Einfluss ‚der Medien‘ auf Gesellschaft und Individuen zwar hoch bewerten, doch zugleich von ihrer Fahigkeit zu einem ‚im Grunde‘ rationalen und autonomen Umgang mit Medien uberzeugt sind. Umgekehrt bedurfen viele Medien- und besonders Werbebotschaften eines zumindest kurzfristig stabilen Ich, das diese Botschaften rezipiert. Das Selbst-Bewusstsein und die gesellschaftliche Positionierung eines Subjektes kann daher weder einseitig als aufklarerisches Festhalten an stabilen Identitatsentwurfen, noch im postmodernen Sinn als deren permanente Auflosung und Fragmentierung verstanden werden.

Primäre Intention des Buches ist die Reduktion des enormen österreichischen Forschungsdefizit zur Aufarbeitung des Sportlebens unter dem NS-Regime. Daher wird der gesamte Bereich des Sportes im Territiorium Österreichs zwischen 1938 und 1945 dargestellt: Der Breiten- und Spitzensport, Massen- und Minderheitensport, den Vereins- und Jugendsport sowie der Sport der Formationen. Auf Grund der Materialfülle wird die Überblicksdarstellung von einer Detailanalyse zu drei Zeitpunkten begleitet: In den Monaten nach dem "Anschluss", rund um den Kriegsbeginn und in der Endphase des Regimes nach Stalingrad. Es lässt sich zeigen, dass und wie das Regime die Rahmenbedingungen des Sportes diktierte, doch manifestiert sich zugleich eine Grauzone, in der die Beteiligten durch Strategien gegenseitiger Anpassung Freiräume vorfanden bzw. schufen, die in je spezifischer Weise genutzt wurden, vom Regime etwa zur Beruhigung der Arbeiterschaft oder zur Kalmierung anti-preußischer Ressentiments, von den Aktiven zur Erlangung von Begünstigungen und von den Zuschauern zur Erfüllung eines "kleinen Glücks". Gerade die Betrachtung des alltäglichen Sportgeschehens und der darin ständig erneuerten Aushandlungen zwischen Regime und Bevölkerung verweisen auf den Beitrag des Buches zur NS-Dskussion, mit welchem das Terrain des Sportes überschritten wird: Das NS-System ist nicht aus dem Zusammenspiel verabsolutierter Macht, Kompetenzen und Möglichkeiten des Regimes mit Erfahrungen und Gefühlen des Ausgeliefertseins zu verstehen, aus dem die Geschichtsschreibung das Bild eines Intermezzos konstruiert, das nicht in den Ablauf der Moderne eingegliedert werden kann. Die Betrachtung des Sportes verdeutlicht, wie sehr im NS-Staat "Normalität" aufrecht erhalten wurde, wie sehr zum anderen vom Regime intendierte Veränderungen von den Menschen mit getragen wurden. Das betrifft etwa Definitionen von Gemeinschaft, von Geschlecht, Jugend und Leistung. Diese Redefinitionen kultureller Felder waren nicht nur oktroyiert, sondern wurden von den "Volksgenossen" und "-genossinen" aufgegriffen und geteilt. Es war gerade der Sport, die diese Artikulationen bestätigte, indem er ihnen Authentizität verlieh und sie scheinbar an die menschliche Natur koppelte. So kann die Analyse des Sportgeschehens im Nationalsozialismus dazu dienen, den aktuellen Blick auf den NS-Staat zu hinterfragen: Für alle, die dazu gehören durften, bot das Leben trotz Holocaust und Weltkrieg auch Angebote einer angenehmen, selbstbestimmten und vergnügten Existenz. Wer diese Seite der NS-Diktatur ausklammert, wird nicht imstande sein, die "Faszination" und/oder Akzeptanz dieses Regimes zu verstehen - und ruft damit bei den nachfolgenden Generationen jene weitgehend sinnleeren Metaphern der Ablehnung hervor, wie sie vielfach die aktuellen Diskurse zum Nationalsozialismus prägen., The intention of the book is to reduce the enormous Austrian research deficiency concerning the reappraisal of the sporting life during the NS-era. Therefore it will depict all sportive areas on the "Austrian" territory between March 1938 and April 1945, including top sports and sports for all, mass and monority sports, sports in clubs, youth sports and also sports practices of the formations of the NSDAP. Due to the enormous quantity of material, this overview will be contrasted by a precise analysis of three specific periods: the months after the "Anschluss", the autumn 1939 and the period after Stalingrad. It can be shown, that and how the regime dictated the basic conditions of sports, but there can also be found some grey area, in which those who were involved found resp. created freedom by strategies of mutual adaption. This freedom was used by different groups in specific ways: by the regime to calm down the working class or to soothe anti-prussian resentments, by the athletes to get some privileges and by the spectators to keep a glimpse of good luck. Not instrumentalization defined sports, but a negotiation of interests. It is just gaze on the everyday life of sports and the inherent permanent negotioations between regime and the people, that refer to the book´s contribution to the long term discussion on national socialism, which exceeds the field of sports: The political and cultural system of the Nazi-era could not be understood by looking at power, competences or possibilities of the regime in comparison with the people´s experiences and feelings of subjection, from which historical sciences construct the image of an interlude, which cannot be included in the evolutionary development of modernity. Looking on sports not only claryfies, to which extent cultural traditions led on and how "normality" was kept alive, but shows, in which ways changes and new valuations were obviously shared and use by the people. This concerned changing definitions of the sense of community, of gender, youth, work and performance. The special importance of sports can be found in substantiating these articulations by giving them authenticity and tracing them back to the nature of men. The analysis of sporting life in the NS-era may serve as an cause for questioning the contemporarygaze on the Nazi state. For all people, who were allowed to be included, life in national socialism offered - in spite of holocaust and World War - supply of a pleasant, self-detemined and enjoyable livehood. Who leaves aside or overlooks this facet of the Nazi dictatorship, will not be able to understand the acceptance and fascination of the regime and evoke just this often senseless metaphors of refusal, which mostly shape actual discourses.
