OBJECTIVES: Using data collected as part of the Multisite Women's Health Study, we examined the differences between lesbians and heterosexual women on objective breast cancer risk calculations using the Gail Model. Health risk behaviors and screening behaviors for breast cancer were also examined. It was hypothesized that lesbians would have higher objective cancer risk estimates and report more behavioral and screening risk factors for breast cancer than heterosexual women. METHODS: Secondary data analyses were conducted using data from a study of women's health conducted from 1994 to 1996. Using a cross sectional design, a convenience sample of lesbian (n = 550) and heterosexual (n = 279) women was recruited from Chicago, New York City and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS: Estimates of 5-year and lifetime breast cancer risk were higher for lesbians compared to heterosexual women. Groups did not differ in self-perceptions of being overweight, but more lesbians reported heavier drinking and more reported abstinence from alcohol. Group differences in adherence to breast cancer screening were not significant. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest a small but statistically significant difference in the calculated breast cancer risk estimates of lesbian and heterosexual women, which seem to be largely accounted for by differences in reproductive risk factors. While researchers have examined the established the foundation for understanding the correlates of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use among some medical populations, less is known about the correlates of CAM use in nonclinical samples of women, and particularly according to sexual orientation. Information on CAM modalities was collected as part of a survey of lesbian and heterosexual women's health. Eighty-two percent of the sample reported CAM use. Predictors of CAM use included a lesbian sexual orientation, less health-related worry, and perceived discrimination in health care settings. Additional research is warranted to better understand how sexual orientation relates to use of CAM. Future studies should also examine the relationships between and experiences with discrimination in traditional medical settings and increased use of complementary and alternative medicine. The current study aimed to identify rates and predictors (demographic, treatment, and psychological variables) of state and cancer-specific anxiety among survivors of breast cancer. Data were collected through a structured telephone interview with 120 women who were at least one year posttreatment. Rates of state anxiety were substantially lower than were the norms for general medical patients. Cancerspecific anxiety was also mild. In hierarchical regression analyses, higher levels of trait anxiety were associated with state and cancer specific anxiety (beta = .73, p < .001, and beta = .34, p < .001, respectively). Higher levels of risk perception were associated only with greater cancerspecific anxiety (beta = .03, p = .057). Identification of the genes BRCAl and BRCA2 offers individuals at high risk for breast, ovarian, colon, or prostate cancer the opportunity to learn if they are genetically predisposed to these diseases. The department of Medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center has a program that provides genetic testing for people with a family history of these cancers. However, African Americans do not participate in genetic testing at the same rate European Americans do. Thus, focus groups were conducted to learn more about the factors influencing the participation of African Americans in genetic testing. The findings indicated that several factors influence their participation, including perceptions about cancer survivability and lack of awareness about the role of genetic testing. Although establishing sexual relationships is viewed as an important developmental milestone for adults, sexual functioning has been a neglected area of investigation for survivors of gynecological cancer. This article describes the long-term effects of clear-cell adenocarcinoma, with a specific focus on sexual functioning as a major quality-of-life concern. The authors hypothesized that respondents with multiple factors that interfered with their sexual functioning would report greater sexual dysfunction, poorer adjustment, and relationship difficulties. Two additional goals were to describe late psychological effects, such as depressive symptoms, and to explore the relationship between health status, coping behavior, social support variables, and depressive symptoms. The findings provide preliminary support for a complex relationship between medical complications, sexual dysfunction, emotional adjustment, and marital/partner relationships: 38% of the respondents reported physical and psychosexual factors interfering with their sexual functioning. Although chronic sexual dysfunction is a legitimate concern by itself, the findings also suggest that sexual difficulties are associated with diverse problems involving mood, quality of life, and adjustment. The Vermont Department of Health (VDH) does not have sufficient personnel to fully staff a mass prophylaxis or vaccination clinic in response to a natural or man-made disease outbreak. Therefore, the VDH developed an emergency preparedness volunteer training program with three primary goals: to include both background information about public health and emergency preparedness and a hands-on training for clinic volunteers; to be adaptable for both community and healthcare professional volunteers; and to examine local emergencies and the VDH public health response to these events. Major components of the training program include basic public health goals and capacities; an introduction to emergency preparedness; a role-playing exercise using Job Action Sheets to simulate 'just-in-time' training; and guidance for personal and family preparedness. The VDH has experienced difficulty finding and recruiting volunteers. To increase the potential volunteer pool, it will be implementing a multifaceted training program (on-line, through the mail, in person) to most effectively engage volunteers with varying interests and learning styles. Sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults face unique challenges in accessing smoking cessation care due to stigma tied to their identities and smoking. While cessation apps show promise in the general population, their efficacy for SGM adults is unclear. This study utilized data from a randomized trial to compare two cessation apps, iCanQuit (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based) and QuitGuide (US Clinical Practice Guidelines-based) among 403 SGM adults. The primary outcome was self-reported complete-case 30-day abstinence from cigarette smoking at 12 months. Mediation analyses explored whether interventions operated through acceptance of cues to smoke and app engagement. At 12 months, quit rates did not differ between arms (26% iCanQuit vs. 22% QuitGuide, OR = 1.22; 95% CI: 0.74 to 2.00, p  = .43). iCanQuit positively impacted cessation via acceptance of cues to smoke (indirect effect = 0.23; 95% CI: 0.06 to 0.50, p  < .001) and demonstrated higher engagement (no. logins, 28.4 vs. 12.1; p  < .001) and satisfaction (91% vs. 75%, OR = 4.18; 95% CI: 2.12 to 8.25, p < .001) than QuitGuide. Although quit rates did not differ between arms, acceptance of cues to smoke seemed to play a crucial role in helping SGM adults quit smoking. Future interventions should consider promoting acceptance of cues to smoke in this population.

Objective: Guided by the PRECEDE-PROCEDE model, this study explores the factors associated with completing an annual screening mammogram among breast cancer survivors (BCS)., Methods: We used multiple cycles of survey data from the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) (2017-2020). Logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the correlates of past year mammograms among breast cancer survivors., Results: We included a sample of 909 breast cancer survivors in the study. Seventy percent of the sample reported at least one mammography screening in the prior 12 months. The more time since diagnosis, the fewer participants performed screening. Consistent with the PRECEDE-PROCEDE Model, annual screening was associated with enabling factors (having health insurance), reinforcing factors (trust in doctors, patient-centered communication), and predisposing factors (cancer-related worry and quality of care)., Conclusions: Findings suggest that thirty percent of BCS may experience barriers to receipt of follow-up mammograms. Additional research is needed to identify strategies that address demographic, enabling, reinforcing, and predisposing factors with the ultimate goal of improving access to follow-up mammography and ensuring the well-being of breast cancer survivors. Practice Implications Cancer surveillance among BCS is vital to improving health outcomes. Background: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience elevated rates of depression due to exposure to unique social stressors associated with membership in a stigmatised minority group. Coping style has been shown to buffer or exacerbate responses to stress. To date, little is known about the risk or protective influence of coping styles on the relationships between stressors and depression in SGM populations., Aims: To examine the moderating effects of coping styles on the relationships between stressors and depression in Thai SGMs., Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted between March and August 2018 using in-person and online surveys. Convenience and snowball recruitment strategies were used. Standardised measures were selected according to the Minority Stress Model. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. Hayes's PROCESS macro was used to test for significant interactions., Results: Of the 411 participants, 40% of the participants reported symptoms of depression that were associated with multiple stressors. Problem-focused coping was reported by most participants (95.8%), followed by social support (83.1%) and avoidance (49.1%) coping. Problem-focused coping weakened the relationships between stressors and depression, whereas avoidance coping strengthened the relationships between depression and stress, loneliness and discrimination. Social support coping was negatively related to depression, with no statistically significant moderating effects., Conclusions: Problem-focused coping served to mitigate the influence of stressors on depression, whereas avoidance coping strategies exacerbated the impact. This study examined health information-seeking behavior among cancer survivors, including informational sources used and the factors correlated with information-seeking across different racial/ethnic groups. We used data from the Health Information National Trends Survey (2017-2022). Adjusted logistic regression was conducted to identify the predictors of information-seeking by race/ethnicity. Predicting variables were organized into demographic (age, education, race, income, and comorbidity), enabling (having health insurance, having a regular provider, and frequency of care visits), predisposing (quality of care, self-efficacy, and confidence in one's ability to get information), and reinforcing (patient-centered communication, ease of getting information, and confusing information available) factors based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model. We included 4723 cancer survivors, of which 15.41% have breast cancer, 17.50% have skin cancer, and 11.11% have prostate cancer. A majority (75.08%) had sought health information. Healthcare providers were the most preferred sources of information across demographic groups, followed by the Internet. Health insurance, a regular provider, and frequent visits were enabling factors that positively influenced information-seeking behavior. Confidence in getting information when needed and self-efficacy were predisposing factors positively associated with the information-seeking behavior. Finally, reinforcing factors (ease of getting information and non-confusion of the information available) were also positively associated with information-seeking. Study findings suggest that one-fourth of cancer survivors had not sought cancer-related information. The results have implications for identifying patients at increased risk for unmet information needs. They also contribute to our understanding of critical racial differences and similarities. Introduction: Adolescent tobacco use remains a significant public health issue with long-term health consequences. This study investigates the relationship between sexual minority status, school-based violence victimization, and tobacco use among adolescents. The objective is to determine the prevalence of school-based violence victimization and tobacco use behaviors and identify key demographic and experiential risk factors., Methods: Data were derived from the Florida Youth Risk Behavior Survey, collected biennially from 2013 to 2021. Participants included high school students who answered demographic questions on sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, sex, and grade. Bivariate analyses and binary logistic regression models examined associations between school-based violence and tobacco use, controlling for demographic factors., Results: Of the 26510 participants, 15.8% identified as sexual minorities. Cigarette smoking was reported by 18.0% of the sample, with a higher prevalence among sexual minority students (27.3%) and students in 12th grade (22.5%). Sexual minority students reported higher rates of school-based violence, including being bullied at school (24.4%) and electronically bullied (22.6%). Overall, 29.3% of students experienced school-based victimization. Tobacco use was significantly associated with school-based violence (AOR=2.04; 95% CI: 1.91-2.19) with higher odds for sexual minority students (AOR=1.91; 95% CI: 1.75-2.09)., Conclusions: The findings highlight a significant association between school-based violence and tobacco use among adolescents. Sexual minority students are at higher risk for both victimization and tobacco use. Objectives: This study investigates the prevalence of exposure to pro- and anti-tobacco advertisements across different sociodemographic groups and sources of exposure in the United States., Methods: The study included 6252 participants from the Health Information National Trends Survey. Binary logistic regression was used to examine associations between exposure to pro and anti-tobacco advertisements, the sources of exposure, and demographic factors., Results: 10% of our sample were current smokers. A rate of 48.14% reported exposure to pro-tobacco ads, and 61.28% reported exposure to anti-tobacco ads. Findings reveal notable disparities in exposure to both pro and anti-tobacco advertisements. Exposure to pro-tobacco ads was more common among current smokers (OR = 0.53 (95% CI 0.44-0.64), p  < 0.001), male participants (female: OR = 0.85 (95% CI 0.77-0.95), p  = 0.003), and younger adults. Reported exposure to anti-tobacco ads was more common among younger adults, individuals with lower levels of education and income, and current smokers. Radio, TV, and billboards were among the most common sources of ad exposure for both types. Stores were among the most common sources of exposure to pro-tobacco ads (stores: 35.58% (18-34), 39.58% (35-49), and online sources (21.71%) were among the sources where people encountered anti-tobacco messages most frequently., Conclusions: The findings underscore the importance of understanding the changing media consumption patterns and advertising awareness across various demographic groups. They also highlight the urgent need for targeted tobacco prevention interventions, especially via Radio, TV, billboards, and stores, particularly among younger adults, racial minorities, and current smokers who show higher exposure to pro-tobacco ads.

Introduction: Smoking rates among low-income smokers are significantly elevated. State tobacco quitlines offer free and evidence-based treatments for smokers living in that state. This study investigated knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs associated with engagement with the Illinois Tobacco Quitline among confirmed smoking patients at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Further goals were to obtain recommendations for strategies to improve patient awareness and engagement., Methods: Data for this study were collected from August to October 2021 from patients receiving care in an FQHC in a large midwestern city in the USA. Clinic-based recruitment was used to enroll a sample of adult current smokers. In-depth interviews and brief surveys were completed with a volunteer sample of patients recruited from an FQHC. The interviews took approximately 60 minutes. Data analysis used descriptive statistics to summarize the responses to the study and deductive thematic analysis to analyze the qualitative interviews., Results: Study participants (n=25) were primarily male, African American, and middle-aged (mean age: 52.5 years). The majority were daily smokers. Over half had heard about the Quitline from sources such as radio advertisements, but usage was low. Barriers to use included low motivation to quit, questions about effectiveness, and poor success with prior Quitline attempts. Participants described factors that would increase the appeal of the Quitline, including testimonials, personalization, and an empathetic approach. Participants were asked about the acceptability of receiving information about the Quitline via patient portals, and most were in support., Conclusions: Interventions are needed to raise awareness and utilization of Quitlines among patients receiving care in FQHC settings. Purpose: Our study explores cancer care disruption among different demographic subgroups. It also investigates these disruptions' impacts on cancer survivors' mental and physical well-being., Design: Pooled cross-sectional survey data., Setting: Health Information Trends Survey for Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results, HINTS-SEER., Participation: n = 1234 cancer survivors participated in the study and completed the survey ., Measures: Outcome variables were treatment disruption in cancer care, mental health and physical health perceptions, age, race, education, income, and sexual orientation., Analysis: Multiple imputations were used to address missing data. Descriptive statistics were conducted to understand the perceptions of care disruption. Partial least squares structural equation models were employed for data analysis, adjusted for socio-demographics., Results: COVID-19 impacted cancer treatment and follow-up appointments (69.45%), routine cancer screening (60.70%), and treatment plans (73.58%), especially among elderly patients. It changed the interactions with health care providers (HCP) for 28.03% of the participants. Older adults were 2.33 times more likely to experience treatment appointment disruptions. People who thought their contact with their doctors changed during COVID-19 were more likely to be older adults (65 or more) (OR = 3.85, P = .011), white (OR >1, P = .002), and with higher income (OR = 1.81, P = .002). Introduction: Federally qualified healthcare centers (FQHC) treat a large population of low-income patients disproportionately burdened by tobacco use. This study investigated healthcare providers' knowledge, attitudes, and referral patterns of patients who smoke to a state tobacco quitline., Methods: The study used a descriptive-qualitative design. In-depth interviews were conducted in 2021 with a sample of healthcare providers recruited from a federally qualified healthcare center (FQHC) in a large city in the Midwest. The interviews were guided by a standardized moderator's guide and lasted 30-45 minutes. Written informed consent was obtained before each interview, and participants completed a brief self-administered survey., Results: Among the 25 participants, 92% were female and 44% were Black. Participants included medical providers (52%), behavioral health providers (16%), and other types of providers (32%). Participants' age and work experience averaged 41.5 and 5.25 years, respectively. Only 32% of providers reported having specialty training in smoking cessation or addiction counseling. Over half (52%) of the participants never or rarely referred patients to the Illinois Tobacco Quitline (ITQL). Providers reported several barriers to referring patients to the ITQL, including limited knowledge about services offered, time constraints, difficulties with the referral process, and lack of feedback between providers and the ITQL. Further, providers described patient-related barriers, including low motivation to quit smoking, language barriers, and failure of patients to respond to calls from the quitline. Recommendations were described for improving patient and provider education, referral processes, and increasing bi-directional communication between providers and the quitline., Conclusions: Providers identified numerous barriers to referring patients for smoking cessation treatment. Background: LGBTQ + individuals often face social stigma and workplace discrimination, negatively impacting their well-being. However, limited research exists on the factors and strategies that enhance their positive workplace experiences. This study was a sequential qualitative mixed-method design conducted in three phases. The study had the following objectives: identifying factors associated with workplace well-being, generating strategies for improving workplace well-being, and obtaining feedback on the identified strategies' acceptability., Methods: In Phase 1, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 LGBTQ + who described factors that improved their satisfaction at work. In Phase 2, two focus group discussions were held with 13 participants, including LGBTQ + adults, scholars in positive psychology, human resource development, and civil rights advocates, to develop strategies for improving workplace well-being based on Phase 1 data. In Phase 3, a survey was sent to a subset of the focus group participants (N = 7) to ascertain the acceptability of the developed strategies. Data analysis was performed using deductive and inductive approaches., Results: The study's first phase identified the factors contributing to workplace well-being. These factors were categorized into intrapersonal, interpersonal, and social-ecological. In the second phase and third phase, 11 strategies were developed to improve workplace well-being. These strategies were divided into two sections. The first section includes strategies organizations and agencies can implement to promote employee well-being (such as emphasizing diversity and equity as core values). The second section outlines strategies for government and civil society sectors (such as establishing laws addressing LGBTQ + equal rights). The Index of Congruence (IOC) assessed the relationship between strategies and workplace well-being improvement. Federally qualified health centers (FQHC) aim to improve cancer prevention by providing screening options and efforts to prevent harmful behavior. Patient portals are increasingly being used to deliver health promotion initiatives. However, little is known about patient portal activation rates in FQHC settings and the factors associated with activation. This study examined patient portal activation among FQHC patients and assessed correlations with demographic, clinical, and health service use variables. We analyzed electronic health record data from adults >18 years old with at least one appointment. Data were accessed from the electronic health records for patients seen between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2022 (n = 40,852 patients). We used multivariate logistic regression models to examine the correlates of having an activated EPIC-supported MyChart patient portal account. One-third of patients had an activated MyChart portal account. Overall, 35% of patients with an activated account had read at least one portal message, 69% used the portal to schedule an appointment, and 90% viewed lab results. Demographic and clinical factors associated with activation included younger age, female sex, white race, English language, being partnered, privately insured, non-smoking, and diagnosed with a chronic disease. More frequent healthcare visits were also associated with an activated account. Whether or not a patient had an email address in the EHR yielded the strongest association with patient portal activation. Overall, 39% of patients did not have an email address; only 2% of those patients had activated their accounts, compared to 54% of those with an email address. Patient portal activation rates were modest and associated with demographic, clinical, and healthcare utilization factors. Patient portal usage to manage one's healthcare needs is increasing nationally. As such, FQHC clinics should enhance efforts to improve the uptake and usage of patient portals, including educational campaigns and eliminating email requirements for portal activation, to reinforce cancer prevention efforts.

Despite lower rates and intensity of smoking, Black men experience a higher incidence of lung cancer compared to white men. The racial disparity in lung cancer is particularly pronounced in Chicago, a highly segregated urban city. Neighborhood conditions, particularly social stress, may play a role in lung tumorigenesis. Preliminary studies indicate that Black men residing in neighborhoods with higher rates of violent crime have significantly higher levels of hair cortisol, an indicator of stress response. To examine the relationship between social stress exposure and gene expression in lung tumors, we investigated glucocorticoid receptor (GR) binding in 15 lung tumor samples in relation to GR target gene expression levels and zip code level residential violent crime rates. Spatial transcriptomics and a version of ChIP sequencing known as CUT&RUN were used. Heatmap of genes, pathway analysis, and motif analysis were conducted at the statistical significance of P < 0.05. GR recruitment to chromatin was correlated with zip code level residential violent crime rate and overall GR binding increased with higher violent crime rates. Our findings suggest that exposure to residential violent crime may influence tumor biology via reprogramming GR recruitment. Prioritizing lung cancer screening in neighborhoods with increased social stress, such as high levels of violent crime, may reduce racial disparities in lung cancer., Significance: Exposure to neighborhood violent crime is correlated with glucocorticoid signaling and lung tumor gene expression changes associated with increased tumor aggressiveness, suggesting social conditions have downstream biophysical consequences that contribute to lung cancer disparities., (©2024 The Authors; Published by the American Association for Cancer Research.)

Purpose: To conduct a randomized controlled trial to compare 3 implementation strategies and the impact of facilitated referrals on linkage of Federally Qualified Health Center patients to the Illinois Tobacco Quitline (ITQL)., Methods: This study will be a hybrid type 3 implementation-effectiveness trial guided by 2 implementation science frameworks: reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance and exploration preparation implementation sustainment. We will evaluate whether sending provider messages through the patient electronic health portal increases patient linkage to the ITQL. We will (1) randomly assign all eligible patients to receive 1 of 3 messages (information about quitting, advice to quit, and advice to quit or cut down), and (2) we will offer a facilitated linkage to the ITQL. For patients who opt into a facilitated referral, we will share their contact information with the ITQL, who will contact them. Four weeks after the initial message, patients who expressed interest in services but were not reached by the ITQL will be rerandomized to 1 of 2 arms, an offer to reconnect to the ITQL or an offer to engage a peer navigator who can help them reconnect to the ITQL. Purpose: To describe the training, preliminary results, and lessons learned from using patient navigators to increase the enrollment of low-income patients in a health system-supported and electronic health record-linked patient portal., Methods: Patient navigators (n=4) were trained to assist patients in a federally qualified health center to enroll in and use patient portals. Patient navigators were stationed at 3 clinic locations. Data from the electronic health record system (Epic) were used to compare MyChart patient portal activation rates and use among patients for the 8 months before and after patient navigation services were offered., Results: Navigators offered 83% of eligible patients with activation assistance. Sixty-four percent of the patients (n=1062) offered MyChart enrollment assistance accepted help. Seventy-four percent of assisted patients with no prior MyChart enrollment activated their accounts during that clinic visit. The primary reason for declining MyChart assistance was a lack of access to or comfort with technology. Patient portal activation increased during the 8 months when navigators were at the clinics (51%) compared to the previous 8 months (44%). Most new users viewed lab results and read a message [χ 2 (1)=49.3, p<.001], with significant increases evident for African Americans [44% before, 49% during; χ 2 (1)=40.4, p<.001] and Latinx patients [52% before, 60% during; χ 2 (1)=6.15, p=.013]., Conclusion: Study results suggest that using patient navigators is feasible and beneficial for increasing patient enrollment in the Federally Qualified Health Centers context. Purpose: This study examined racial/ethnic disparities in lung cancer screening eligibility rates using 2013 US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines for lung cancer with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) and the revised 2021 guidelines., Methods: The study utilized a retrospective and cross-sectional research design by analyzing data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). N = 2,823 respondents aged 50-80 who self-reported current smoking were included in the analyses. Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the changed status of LDCT screening eligibility based on the revised 2021 guidelines by race/ethnicity after adjusting for respondent demographics., Results: Our study found substantial increases in screening eligibility rates across racial and ethnic groups when comparing the original and revised guidelines. The largest increase was observed among Black people (174%), Hispanics (152%), those in the other category (118%), and Whites who smoke (80.8%). When comparing original screening guidelines to revised guidelines, Whites who smoke had the highest percentage of changes from "not eligible" to "eligible" (28.3%), followed by individuals in the "other" category (28.1%), Black people (23.2%) and Hispanics who smoke (18.3%) (p < 0.001). Binary logistic regression results further showed that Black people who smoke (OR = 0.71, p = 0.001), as well as Hispanics who smoke (OR=0.54, p < 0.001), were less likely to change from not eligible to eligible for screening compared to Whites who smoke after adopting the revised screening guidelines. Based on the absolute differences in screening eligibility rates between Whites and other racial/ethnic groups, the disparities may have widened under the new guidelines, particularly with larger absolute differences observed between Whites, Black people, and Hispanics., Conclusions: Our study highlights racial/ethnic disparities in LDCT screening eligibility among people who currently smoke. While the revised USPSTF guidelines increased screening eligibility for racial and ethnic minorities, they did not eliminate these disparities and may have widened under the new guidelines. Background: Sex workers, those who trade sex for monetary or nonmonetary items, experience high rates of HIV transmission but have not been adequately included in HIV prevention and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence program development research. Community-empowered (C.E.) approaches have been the most successful at reducing HIV transmission among sex workers. Centering Healthcare (Centering) is a C.E. model proven to improve health outcomes and reduce health disparities in other populations, such as pregnant women, people with diabetes, and sickle cell disease. However, no research exists to determine if Centering can be adapted to meet the unique HIV prevention needs of sex workers., Objective: We aim to explain the process by which we collaboratively and iteratively adapted Centering to meet the HIV prevention and PrEP retention needs of sex workers., Methods: We utilized the Assessment, Decision, Adaptation, Production, Topical Experts, Integration, Training, Testing (ADAPT-ITT) framework, a model for adapting evidence-based interventions. We applied phases one through six of the ADAPT-ITT framework (Assessment, Decision, Adaptation, Production, Topical Experts, Integration) to the design to address the distinct HIV prevention needs of sex workers in Chicago. Study outcomes corresponded to each phase of the ADAPT-ITT framework. Data used for adaptation emerged from collaborative stakeholder meetings, individual interviews (n = 36) and focus groups (n = 8) with current and former sex workers, and individual interviews with care providers (n = 8). In collaboration with our community advisory board, we used a collaborative and iterative analytical process to co-produce a culturally adapted 3-session facilitator's guide for the Centering Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (C-PrEP +) group healthcare model., Results: The ADAPT-ITT framework offered structure and facilitated this community-empowered innovative adaptation of Centering Healthcare. This process culminated with a facilitator's guide and associated materials ready for pilot testing., Conclusions: In direct alignment with community empowerment, we followed the ADAPT-ITT framework, phases 1-6, to iteratively adapt Centering Healthcare to suit the stated HIV Prevention and PrEP care needs of sex workers in Chicago. The study represents the first time the first time Centering has been adapted to suit the HIV prevention and PrEP care needs of sex workers. Background: Despite the lower prevalence and frequency of smoking, Black adults are disproportionately affected by lung cancer. Exposure to chronic stress generates heightened immune responses, which creates a cell environment conducive to lung cancer development. Residents in poor and segregated neighborhoods are exposed to increased neighborhood violence, and chronic exposure to violence may have downstream physiological stress responses, which may explain racial disparities in lung cancer in predominantly Black urban communities., Methods: We utilized retrospective electronic medical records of patients who underwent a screening or diagnostic test for lung cancer at an academic medical center in Chicago to examine the associations between lung cancer diagnosis and individual characteristics (age, gender, race/ethnicity, and smoking status) and neighborhood-level homicide rate. We then used a synthetic population to estimate the neighborhood-level lung cancer risk to understand spatial clusters of increased homicide rates and lung cancer risk., Results: Older age and former/current smoking status were associated with increased odds of lung cancer diagnosis. Hispanic patients were more likely than White patients to be diagnosed with lung cancer, but there was no statistical difference between Black and White patients in lung cancer diagnosis. The odds of being diagnosed with lung cancer were significantly higher for patients living in areas with the third and fourth quartiles of homicide rates compared to the second quartile of homicide rates. Furthermore, significant spatial clusters of increased lung cancer risk and homicide rates were observed on Chicago's South and West sides., Conclusions: Neighborhood violence was associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Black residents in Chicago are disproportionately exposed to neighborhood violence, which may partially explain the existing racial disparity in lung cancer. To examine knowledge and attitudes about lung health promotion (smoking cessation and lung cancer screening) among Black male smokers in a large Midwestern city in the United States. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 25 study participants. Each interview lasted approximately 45 minutes. Participants also completed a brief (5-10 minutes) survey measuring demographic characteristics, smoking experiences and knowledge and attitudes about lung health promotion activities. Descriptive statistics were used for quantitative data, and deductive thematic analysis for qualitative data analysis. The mean age of study participants was 57.5 years. Eighty-four percent of participants were current smokers, with the majority being daily smokers. Perceived risk for lung cancer was mixed, with 56% of participants endorsing that they considered themselves to be at high or moderate risk and the remaining 44% at low or no risk for lung cancer. Forty percent of participants reported having had a test to check their lungs for cancer. Participants were aware of the health risks associated with smoking but reported limited assistance from providers regarding the receipt of smoking cessation treatments. Awareness of lung cancer screening was limited, but participants expressed openness to screening; however, barriers were anticipated, including costs, fear and a reduced willingness to be screened in the absence of symptoms. Study participants reported limited experiences with lung health promotion activities. Black/African American (BAA) men have the lowest life expectancy among other major demographic groups in the United States, with BAA male mortality rates 40% higher than their White male counterparts. Despite known benefits of preventive health care utilization, BAA men are 43% more likely to use the emergency department for usual care. Many intersecting factors like medical mistrust and religion have been identified as common barriers BAA men face in health care utilization with few studies exploring factors that impact their current preventive health care utilization. In addition, BAA men's perceptions of health and ability to identify or seek help have always been disproportionately lower than other racial groups despite higher rates of preventable diseases. Using the tenets of the Andersen Healthcare Utilization Model, this cross-sectional study of 176 BAA men explores BAA men's current preventive health care practices while examining the intersection of predisposing, enabling, and need factors on BAA men's preventive health care utilization. While it is well known that higher income levels and higher education positively influence health care utilization, the intersection of religious affiliation and higher levels of medical mistrust was associated with BAA men's decreased engagement with health care as religion posed as a buffer to health care utilization. This study demonstrated that BAA men's perception of health differed by sexual orientation, educational status, and income. However, across all groups the participants' perspective of their health was not in alignment with their current health outcomes. Sexual minority women (SMW; e.g., lesbian, bisexual) report higher rates of almost every negative physical health (e.g., asthma, arthritis, cardiovascular disease), mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety), and substance use outcome compared to heterosexual women. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been identified as risk factors for negative health outcomes. Despite this, no study to date has synthesized existing literature examining ACEs and health outcomes among SMW. This gap is important because SMW are significantly more likely than heterosexual women to report every type of ACE and a higher total number of ACEs. Therefore, using a scoping review methodology, we sought to expand understanding of the relationship between ACEs and health outcomes among SMW. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for. Scoping Reviews protocol, we searched five databases: Web of Science, PsycInfo, CINAHL, PubMed, and Embase for studies published between January 2000 and June 2021 that examined mental health, physical health, and/or substance use risk factors and outcomes among adult cisgender SMW who report ACEs. Our search yielded 840 unique results. Studies were screened independently by two authors to determine eligibility, and 42 met full inclusion criteria. Our findings provide strong evidence that ACEs are an important risk factor for multiple negative mental health and substance use outcomes among SMW. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore healthcare experiences of Black and White sexual and gender minority (SGM) cancer survivors across the cancer care continuum., Methods: This was a qualitative analysis of two focus groups and eight individual interviews completed as part of a larger initiative using a community-engaged research approach to reduce cancer disparities in marginalized communities. There was a total of 16 participants in the study (9 were White, 7 were Black) and data were collected between 2019 and 2020., Results: Three main themes emerged from the thematic analysis: strategically coming out, provider preferences, and health system challenges. Participants noted that they often came out through their support system, decided to come out based on the relevance of their SGM identity that they perceived, and expressed a desire for privacy. Lack of an accessible and competent PCP was tied to delayed cancer diagnosis and many participants voiced a preference for consistency when they found a provider they liked., Conclusions: Providers across specialties can address barriers for SGM patients by not making assumptions about patient sexual orientation or gender identity. Institutions should systematically collect sexual orientation and gender identity information. Primary care providers should be aware that due to resistance to switching from trusted providers, they may need to take greater initiative to facilitate cancer screenings for their patients when appropriate or take special care when making referrals to ensure they are using SGM-affirming providers., Implications for Cancer Survivors: SGM cancer survivors often benefit from a cultivating relationship with a trusted PCP or other provider., (© 2023. The study's goal was to look at providers' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding lung cancer screening among Black male smokers served by a federally qualified healthcare center. Participants in the study were interviewed in depth. Participants completed a short (5-10 minute) survey that assessed demographics, training, and attitudes toward lung cancer screening. For quantitative data, descriptive statistics were used, and for qualitative data, deductive thematic analysis was used. This study included ten healthcare professionals, the majority of whom identified as Black (80%) and were trained as advanced practice providers (60%). The majority of providers (90%) have heard of LDCT lung cancer screening; however, participants reported only being "somewhat" familiar with the LDCT eligibility criteria (70%). Despite generally positive attitudes toward LDCT, patient referral rates for screening were low. Barriers included a lack of provider knowledge about screening eligibility, a lack of use of shared decision-making tools, and patient concerns about screening risks. The reasons for the low referral rates varied, but they included a preference to refer patients for smoking cessation rather than screening, low screening completion and follow-up rates among referred patients, and a lower likelihood that Black smokers will meet pack-year requirements for screening. Additionally, providers discussed patient-level factors such as a lack of information, mistrust, and transportation. The study findings add to the body of knowledge about lung cancer knowledge and screening practices among providers in FQHC settings. A mission statement represents an organization's values, expectations, and priorities and guides its strategic decision-making. This article describes an innovative and iterative process for developing mission statements to reflect and guide the diversity, equity, and inclusion values of schools and colleges of nursing. The process began with extensive input from the faculty during the fall 2021 faculty retreat using a World Café approach. Following the retreat, members of the Equity and Inclusion Committee reviewed the information from the faculty about the college's values, goals, and vision for our tripartite mission. In drafting the mission statement, the Equity, and Inclusion Committee, which includes faculty, staff, and student representation from the college's multiple regional campuses, units, and departments, met to craft an initial draft collaboratively. The initial draft of the mission statement was then circulated to the Faculty Leadership Team, the Faculty Executive Committee, and individual departments within the college for feedback. Committee members used the input and suggested revisions to refine and finalize a proposed new mission statement. A survey was distributed to faculty, staff, and students to provide quantitative and qualitative feedback about the proposed mission statement (N = 125). Mean scores suggested agreement that the new mission statement reflected the values and future direction of the college (M = 7.91), aligned with personal values and career goals (M = 8.25), and its achievement would advance the discipline of nursing (M = 8.30). The level of support for adopting the new mission statement was strong (M = 7.83). Most of the faculty voted to adopt the new mission statement at a faculty meeting (N = 98, 85 %). Background: Black girls are disproportionately impacted by HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), underscoring the urgent need for innovative strategies to enhance the adoption and maintenance of HIV/STI prevention efforts. Historically, Black male caregivers have been left out of girls' programming, and little guidance exists to inform intervention development for Black girls and their male caregivers. Engaging Black male caregivers in Black girls' sexual and reproductive health may reduce sexual risk-taking and improve the sustainability of preventative behaviors., Objective: This paper describes the formative phases, processes, and methods used to adapt an evidence-based mother-daughter sexual and reproductive health intervention for Black girls 9-18 years old and their male caregivers., Methods: We used the ADAPT-ITT model to tailor IMARA for Black girls and their male caregivers. Diverse qualitative methods (interviews, focus groups, and theater testing) were used throughout the adaption process., Results: Findings support using the ADAPT-ITT model to tailor an evidence-based HIV/STI intervention for Black girls and their Black male caregivers. Findings highlight the importance of community engagement and the use of qualitative methods to demonstrate the acceptability and feasibility of the adapted intervention. Key lessons learned are reviewed., Conclusions: Adapting evidence-based interventions to incorporate Black girls and their Black male caregivers should be driven by a relevant theoretical framework that aligns with the target population(s). Adapting the intervention in partnership with the community has been shown to improve acceptability and feasibility as it is responsive to community needs. COVID-19 exacerbated health disparities, financial insecurity, and occupational safety for many within marginalized populations. This study, which took place between 2019 and 2022, aimed to explore the way in which sex workers ( n = 36) in Chicago were impacted by COVID-19. We analyzed the transcripts of 36 individual interviews with a diverse group of sex workers using thematic analysis. Five general themes emerged regarding the detrimental impact of COVID-19 on sex workers: (1) the impact of COVID-19 on physical health; (2) the economic impact of COVID-19; (3) the impact of COVID-19 on safety; (4) the impact of COVID-19 on mental health; and (5) adaptive strategies for working during COVID-19. Participants reported that their physical and mental health, economic stability, and safety worsened due to COVID-19 and that adaptive strategies did not serve to improve working conditions. Findings highlight the ways in which sex workers are particularly vulnerable during a public health crisis, such as COVID-19. In response to these findings, targeted resources, an increased access to funding, community-empowered interventions and policy changes are needed to protect the health and safety of sex workers in Chicago.

Objectives: To examine the acceptability of a culturally targeted lung cancer screening decision aid developed for older Chinese Americans with a smoking history and primary care providers serving this patient population., Methods: Study participants reviewed a web-based decision aid (DA) for lung cancer screening named "Lung Decisions Coaching Tool (LDC-T)." Participants completed a baseline survey and were invited to join an interview. During the interview, participants engaged with the Lung Decisions Coaching Tool and then completed standardized measures of acceptability, usability, and satisfaction., Results: Chinese American smokers (N =22) and Chinese American physicians (N=10) rated the acceptability and usability of a patient version and provider versions of the LDC-T, respectively. Patient version demonstrated high levels of acceptability, usability and satisfaction. Most participants rated the information provided as good or excellent, the amount of tool information was just right, and they thought the tool would be useful for making a screening decision. The tool was well received by participants for ease of use and well-integrated functions. Furthermore, participants indicated they would like to use the tool to help prepare for lung cancer screening shared decision-making with their provider. Similar results were found for the provider version of the LDC-T., Conclusions: Lung cancer screening represents an evidence-based approach to reducing lung cancer morbidity and mortality among chronic high-frequency smokers. Study results suggest the acceptability of a culturally targeted lung cancer screening decision aid for Chinese American smokers and providers. Purpose: To examine the association of cigarette use and smoking-related health conditions by race/ethnicity among diverse and low-income patients at a federally qualified health center (FQHC)., Methods: Demographics, smoking status, health conditions, death, and health service use were extracted from electronic medical data for patients seen between September 1, 2018, and August 31, 2020 ( n =51,670). Smoking categories included everyday/heavy smoker, someday/light smoker, former smoker, or never smoker., Results: Current and former smoking rates were 20.1% and 15.2%, respectively. Males, Black, White, non-partnered, older, and Medicaid/Medicare patients were more likely to smoke. Compared with never smokers, former and heavy smokers had higher odds for all health conditions except respiratory failure, and light smokers had higher odds of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, and peripheral vascular disease. All smoking categories had more emergency department visits and hospitalizations than never smokers. The associations between smoking status and health conditions differed by race/ethnicity. White patients who smoked had a greater increase in odds of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases compared with Hispanic and Black patients. Black patients who smoked had a greater increase in odds of emphysema and respiratory failure compared with Hispanic patients. Purpose: To qualitatively examine barriers to patient portal use among low-income patients receiving health care services at a federally qualified health center (FQHC)., Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with a volunteer sample of patients recruited from an FQHC. The interviews took 30-45 minutes. As participants arrived for each scheduled interview, written informed consent was obtained and participants completed a brief (5-10 minutes) self-administered survey., Results: Participants (N =25) were primarily middle-aged (M = 53 years), Black (76%), and male (60%). Over 60% of patients had heard of MyChart, but only 40% were enrolled. Barriers to enrollment and use of MyChart were organized into individual, organizational, and structural levels. Providing low-literacy informational materials and enrollment assistance emerged as potential strategies for increasing MyChart use., Conclusion: Federally-qualified health centers serving low-income populations should enhance patient portal use by increasing awareness of the benefits of portals and assisting patients with enrollment.

Introduction: Sexual minority individuals experience elevated risk for smoking and violence due to a combination of general and unique identity-based risk factors. This study examined associations among sexual minority status, school-based violence, and tobacco use, among youth., Methods: Data for this secondary data analysis consisted of Chicago-specific data from the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (n=1562). Current use (≥1 day during the previous 30 days) of any tobacco product (cigarettes, e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and cigars) and school-based violence (avoided school because they felt unsafe, were threatened/injured with a weapon, were in a physical fight, and were bullied) were estimated by sexual orientation (heterosexual vs gay, lesbian, bisexual, and unsure). A chi-squared test was used to investigate associations among the variables. Path analysis was employed to examine possible mediation effects of school-based violence., Results: Thirty percent of sexual minority youth and 11.5% of heterosexual youth reported current tobacco use (χ 2 =55.91; p<0.001). Nearly one-third (31.8%) of youth reported school-based violence, with a higher rate (41.2%) reported by sexual minority youth compared to heterosexual youth (28.1%; χ 2 =19.48; p<0.001). Path analysis confirmed these associations, controlling for sex, age, and race/ethnicity. The model showed that sexual minority status increased odds of current tobacco use by a factor of 1.8 (95% CI: 1.3-2.6) via its relationship with school-based violence, explaining 33.8% of the total association between sexual minority status and tobacco use., Conclusions: Tobacco use was higher among sexual minority youth. School-based violence partially mediated the association between sexual minority status and tobacco use. Background: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals have documented disparities in mental health that are experienced across the life course. However, limited research has been conducted to identify the factors which contribute to evaluated risk for poor mental health among older Asian Americans who identify as LGBT. The purpose of this study was to determine the perspectives of leaders of community-based organizations about the mental health needs and concerns of their LGBT constituents from diverse Asian backgrounds., Methods: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with leaders of community-based organizations serving the needs of LGBT individuals. A qualitative framework analysis approach was used to identify, analyze and report themes within the data., Results: 11 members of community organizations located in California (54.5%), Chicago (27.2%), and New York (18.1%) were interviewed. Chronic stress was identified as negatively impacting constituents' lives and was attributed to social determinants of health, including inadequate housing, financial insecurity, discrimination, barriers to adequate health care, and immigration status. Ageism, social isolation, language barriers, and limited connections to cultural, religious, or LGBT communities were identified as factors impacting middle-aged and older adults. Participants identified homelessness, violence, and lack of parental acceptance as contributing to distress among youth and younger adults. The most vulnerable community members were identified as gender minorities, undocumented individuals, and individuals with limited English proficiencies. Organizational leaders described strategies to address social determinants., Conclusions: Asian Americans who are LGBT are confronted with substantial risks for poor mental health that are linked to modifiable social determinants of health. HIV/AIDS disproportionately impacts Black cisgender female adolescents and emerging adults. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) reduces the risk of HIV infection; however, structural barriers may exacerbate resistance to PrEP in this population. The purpose of this paper is to understand the characteristics of age, race, gender, history, and medical mistrust as barriers to PrEP uptake among Black female adolescents and emerging adults (N = 100 respondents) between the ages of 13-24 years in Chicago. Between January and June of 2019, participants completed the survey. We used directed content analysis to examine reported barriers to PrEP uptake. The most commonly identified barriers to PrEP uptake were side effects (N = 39), financial concerns (N = 15), and medical mistrust (N = 12). Less frequently reported barriers included lack of PrEP knowledge and misconceptions (N = 9), stigma (N = 2), privacy concerns (N = 4). We describe innovative multi-level strategies to provide culturally safe care to improve PrEP acceptability among Black female adolescents and emerging adults in Chicago. These recommendations may help mitigate the effect of medical mistrust, stigma, and misconceptions of PrEP within Black communities., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (© 2022 Published by Elsevier Inc.)

Background: Increasing the size and diversity of the nursing workforce is an important priority. Here, we describe a student success program to increase students' perceived support, coping, and self-efficacy for completing the nursing program among underrepresented racial/ethnic minority students in nursing education following the dual pandemics of COVID-19 and racial injustice., Methods: In collaboration with the Urban Health Program at the University of Illinois Chicago, we conducted a 15-week online student success pilot program with a volunteer sample of upper-level undergraduate nursing students. The curriculum for the program included topics centered on traditional student success topics and psychological, emotional, and contextual issues associated with student success. The sessions were conducted weekly throughout the Spring and Fall semesters of 2021, lasting 90-min. Quality improvement evaluations included weekly process variables and a post-test assessment., Results: Participants (N = 35) were primarily female and Hispanic. The program was acceptable, with participants very satisfied with the weekly sessions (83 %). Post-evaluations revealed self-reported improvements in peer support (69 %), confidence in reaching educational goals (94 %), handling microaggressions (77 %), coping with adversity (80 %), stress levels (63 %), and thoughts about leaving the program (86 %)., Conclusions: This student success program shows promise for improving general and minority-specific factors associated with student success. Loneliness is a significant risk factor for depression in adults. Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals are at risk for loneliness and depression due to stigma and discrimination. However, little is known about the influences of loneliness on the mental health of SGM populations. Guided by the Minority Stress and Integrative Mediation Frameworks, the authors aimed to examine loneliness's direct and indirect effects on the relationships between minority stressors and depression among Thai SGM adults. Data were drawn from a larger cross-sectional survey. Standardized measures of minority stressors (discrimination, victimization, identity concealment, and internalized sexual stigma), loneliness, and depression were selected and translated by expert panels. A convenience sample was recruited, and data were collected using online and in-person methods. Participants (N = 411, M = 29.5 years) were primarily male (90.5%), gay (79.3%), and cisgender (76.6%). More than 40% of participants reported clinically significant levels of loneliness (M = 38.59, standard deviation [SD] = 11.11) and depression (M = 9.46, SD = 8.43). Discrimination, identity concealment, and internalized sexual stigma were directly associated with loneliness (all p < 0.05). Minority stressors were significantly related to depression through indirect associations via loneliness accounting for 33%-54% of the total effect. Indirect effects (95% confidence interval) were 0.25 [0.12, 0.40] for discrimination, -0.41 [-0.67, -0.18] for identity concealment, and 0.42 [0.06, 0.79] for internalized sexual stigma. Loneliness was prevalent and played a mediating role in the associations between minority stressors and depression. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between discrimination in healthcare settings and psychological distress., Method: This study utilized a retrospective cross-sectional study design. The dataset was obtained from 2015-2017 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). Healthcare discrimination experience (yes, no) was measured using the following question "Over your entire lifetime, how often have you been treated unfairly when getting medical care (never, rarely, sometimes, often)?". Psychological distress was the study outcome and was measured using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. A composite score (0-24) was created for psychological distress for the prior 30 days and for the worse most in the past 12 months. A hierarchical multivariate linear regression was conducted to examine the influence of healthcare discrimination experience on psychological distress after adjusting for other covariates., Results: Study participants (weighted N = 1,360,487) had a mean age of 64.35 years (SD = 0.61), were primarily female (54.93%), heterosexual (96.61%), and married or living with a partner (73.37%). About 10.00% of older Asian Americans ever perceived healthcare discrimination over their entire lifetime. Perceived discrimination was associated with higher levels of psychological distress for the past 30 days (beta= 2.107, SE = 0.662, p < 0.05) and for the worst month in the past year (beta= 2.099, SE = 0.697, p < 0.05) after controlling for covariates., Conclusion: Self-reported discrimination was relatively low in this sample of older Asian American adults. However, consistent with prior research, perceived discrimination in the healthcare setting was associated with increased psychological distress. The findings have implications for improving the quality of health care services received.

Complex structural and social factors have created health inequities for Black sex workers. Black people, including those engaged in transactional sex, report leaning on spiritual beliefs to guide health-related decision-making, including whether to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Public health nurses can improve the health of Black sex workers through culturally safe care, which may include a community-stated vision of spiritual support. Objective: To describe the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) sponsored Disparities Elimination through Coordinated Interventions to Prevent and Control Heart and Lung Disease (DECIPHeR) Alliance to support late-stage implementation research aimed at reducing disparities in communities with high burdens of cardiovascular and/or pulmonary disease., Study Setting: NHBLI funded seven DECIPHeR studies and a Coordinating Center. Projects target high-risk diverse populations including racial and ethnic minorities, urban, rural, and low-income communities, disadvantaged children, and persons with serious mental illness. Two projects address multiple cardiovascular risk factors, three focus on hypertension, one on tobacco use, and one on pediatric asthma., Study Design: The initial phase supports planning activities for sustainable uptake of evidence-based interventions in targeted communities. Purpose: To describe oncology nurses' perspectives regarding survivorship care plan (SCP) components and implementation for colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors in Thailand., Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive online study was conducted between October and November 2020. Thai oncology nurses were recruited using Facebook and the Line application. Study participants (n = 160) rated the usefulness of four standard SCP components (treatment summaries, surveillance, late/long-term effects, and health promotion and psychosocial needs; n = 23 items) and gave input on the implementation of SCPs in clinical practice (n = 11 items). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics., Results: Most oncology nurses supported providing CRC survivors with SCPs (93.2%) and felt that SCPs were an important part of their practice (93.7%). Nurses rated all four SCP components as "very useful," including treatment summaries (76.4%), surveillance (81.9%), late/long-term effects (85.7%), and health behavior and psychosocial concerns (80.2%). In terms of implementation, most nurses indicated that oncologists should prepare (84.4%) and provide SCPs (95%), but 61.9% and 69.4% of nurses, respectively, also believed that they should perform these tasks. In addition, most nurses indicated that they should play a significant role in the ongoing management of CRC survivors (95.7%) and that evidence-based surveillance guidelines are needed (96.2%)., Conclusion: Oncology nurses believed that the four SCP components were helpful to the long-term management of CRC survivors, supported SCP provision, and expressed their perceived responsibilities for preparing and delivering SCPs. The findings suggested opportunities for oncology nurses to play a significant role in developing and implementing SCPs. However, additional efforts are needed to expand nurses' roles in survivorship care and establish practice guidelines that will facilitate integration of SCPs into nursing practice., (© 2021. This article describes an educational program to engage African American men as citizen scientists (CSs) and future research partners in a lung cancer screening project. We provide an overview of the curriculum used, the structure and format of the educational sessions, and associated educational outcomes. Furthermore, we describe lessons learned in the engagement of African American men as CS in community-based lung-health equity research. The CS educational program included five group-based sessions delivered through zoom. The educational curriculum was adapted from the University of Florida Citizen Scientist program and tailored to address lung health and the contextual experiences of African American men. Each session lasted 90 minutes. Pre- and post-test measures were collected to examine changes in knowledge, comfort, health literacy, research interests, and medical mistrust. Eight African American men completed the CS educational program. Attendance rates were high for each session (100%). Seven participants completed additional human subject research certification. Improvements were observed from pre- to post-test in participants' level of knowledge, comfort, and health literacy but not medical mistrust. CS reported the most interest in participating in research aimed to identify important community strengths and problems. Study findings suggest that it was feasible to deliver an online citizen scientist educational program designed to prepare participants to serve as partners in a lung cancer screening intervention for African American men. Results suggest the educational program has the potential to improve key outcomes including completion of regulatory training and increased research-related knowledge, comfort, and health literacy.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the significant disparities experienced by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) in infections, hospitalizations, and deaths associated with the Coronavirus have underscored the imperative to increase the size and diversity of the healthcare workforce, including nursing. Academically focused pipeline development programs have led to some advances in minority recruitment and retention; however, emerging research highlights the importance of extra-academic factors that reduce the sense of belonging and persistence among underrepresented and minority students. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe the diversity, equity, and inclusion goals and activities of a college of nursing located in a minority-serving institution. Here, we emphasize the description of a range of activities aimed at meeting our diversity goals. Further, we highlight the actions initiated in response to emergent "extra-academic" student needs over the past year related to the COVID-19 pandemic and police brutality. Medication non-adherence is a leading cause of poor treatment outcomes among Thai patients with psychiatric disorders and creates challenges for psychiatric nurses. This systematic review synthesized research on intervention effectiveness for antipsychotic medication adherence in Thai schizophrenic populations. Following PRISMA guidelines, searches were completed in seven databases, including PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, ThaiJO, and Google Scholar. No restriction dates were used. Screening and extraction of data were performed systematically. Eligible studies consisted of nine quasi-experimental and two randomized control trial studies. The Joanna Briggs Institute Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument (JBI-MAStARI) was used to assess the studies’ methodological quality. This review revealed that individual counseling combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI) techniques improved and maintained medication adherence behavior over time. Post-testing after intervention completion and at 3- and 6-month follow-ups showed that treatment group participants were more adherent than control group participants (p < 0.01). These findings suggest that incorporating CBT and MI into clinical practice can enhance medication adherence behavior. Booster session efficacy for reinforcing and sustaining adherence should be investigated. Greater rigor is warranted in future intervention studies based on a quality appraisal of previous studies.
