Background There are limited studies examining alcohol consumption in Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) players. In a previous paper, we reported excess alcohol consumption, alcohol-related harms and binge drinking amongst elite GAA players. In that survey, the players were provided with an opportunity to provide comments on alcohol. This current study analyses these comments. Aims The aim of this study was to provide a qualitative analysis of elite GAA players opinions on alcohol consumption, harms, behaviours and culture. Methods An anonymous, web-based e-questionnaire was distributed to all registered adult elite (inter-county) GAA players. This analysed demographics, alcohol consumption, alcohol culture and alcohol-related harms. This paper is a thematic analysis of the players comments on alcohol in the GAA. Results Seven hundred seventy-three of 3592 (21%) players responded. One hundred fifty-two respondents (21%) commented in the free text section of the survey regarding alcohol. One hundred eleven comments (73%) were suitable for analysis. Relevant themes were a pattern of abstinence and bingeing (n = 44), excess alcohol consumption (n = 40) and drinking bans contributing to a binge drinking culture (n = 37). There was a mixed attitude to alcohol sponsorship. Conclusion These data show players recognise intermittent binge drinking with periods of abstinence and alcohol-related harms. Further initiatives regarding alcohol harm reduction merit consideration including prohibition of alcohol sponsorship, similar to the GAA’s ban on gambling.

A.; Yu, Chen-Yu; Yu, Wei; Zeballos, Milagros; Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration., We present the first Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the Galactic center source associated with a supermassive black hole. These observations were conducted in 2017 using a global interferometric array of eight telescopes operating at a wavelength of λ = 1.3 mm. The EHT data resolve a compact emission region with intrahour variability. A variety of imaging and modeling analyses all support an image that is dominated by a bright, thick ring with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 μas (68% credible interval). The ring has modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry and a comparatively dim interior. Using a large suite of numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the EHT images of Sgr A* are consistent with the expected appearance of a Kerr black hole with mass ∼4 × 106 M⊙, which is inferred to exist at this location based on previous infrared observations of individual stellar orbits, as well as maser proper-motion studies. Our model comparisons disfavor scenarios where the black hole is viewed at high inclination (i > 50°), as well as nonspinning black holes and those with retrograde accretion disks. Our results provide direct evidence for the presence of a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, and for the first time we connect the predictions from dynamical measurements of stellar orbits on scales of 103–105 gravitational radii to event-horizon-scale images and variability. Furthermore, a comparison with the EHT results for the supermassive black hole M87* shows consistency with the predictions of general relativity spanning over three orders of magnitude in central mass. © 2022. Anton; Zhang, Shuo; Zhao, Guang-Yao; Zhao, Shan-Shan; Chang, Dominic O.; Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration., In this paper we quantify the temporal variability and image morphology of the horizon-scale emission from Sgr A*, as observed by the EHT in 2017 April at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. We find that the Sgr A* data exhibit variability that exceeds what can be explained by the uncertainties in the data or by the effects of interstellar scattering. The magnitude of this variability can be a substantial fraction of the correlated flux density, reaching ∼100% on some baselines. Through an exploration of simple geometric source models, we demonstrate that ring-like morphologies provide better fits to the Sgr A* data than do other morphologies with comparable complexity. We develop two strategies for fitting static geometric ring models to the time-variable Sgr A* data; one strategy fits models to short segments of data over which the source is static and averages these independent fits, while the other fits models to the full data set using a parametric model for the structural variability power spectrum around the average source structure. Both geometric modeling and image-domain feature extraction techniques determine the ring diameter to be 51.8 ± 2.3 μas (68% credible intervals), with the ring thickness constrained to have an FWHM between ∼30% and 50% of the ring diameter. To bring the diameter measurements to a common physical scale, we calibrate them using synthetic data generated from GRMHD simulations. This calibration constrains the angular size of the gravitational radius to be ${4.8}_{-0.7}^{+1.4}$ μas, which we combine with an independent distance measurement from maser parallaxes to determine the mass of Sgr A* to be ${4.0}_{-0.6}^{+1.1}\times {10}^{6}$ M⊙. © 2022. This is the only stationary, vacuum, axisymmetric metric, without electromagnetic charge, that satisfies Einstein's equations and does not have pathologies outside of the event horizon. We present new constraints on potential deviations from the Kerr prediction based on 2017 EHT observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). We calibrate the relationship between the geometrically defined black hole shadow and the observed size of the ring-like images using a library that includes both Kerr and non-Kerr simulations. We use the exquisite prior constraints on the mass-to-distance ratio for Sgr A* to show that the observed image size is within ∼10% of the Kerr predictions. We use these bounds to constrain metrics that are parametrically different from Kerr, as well as the charges of several known spacetimes. To consider alternatives to the presence of an event horizon, we explore the possibility that Sgr A* is a compact object with a surface that either absorbs and thermally reemits incident radiation or partially reflects it. Using the observed image size and the broadband spectrum of Sgr A*, we conclude that a thermal surface can be ruled out and a fully reflective one is unlikely. We compare our results to the broader landscape of gravitational tests. Together with the bounds found for stellar-mass black holes and the M87 black hole, our observations provide further support that the external spacetimes of all black holes are described by the Kerr metric, independent of their mass. © 2022. Anton; Zhang, Shuo; Zhao, Guang-Yao; Zhao, Shan-Shan.--This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted reuse, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., We present a framework for characterizing the spatiotemporal power spectrum of the variability expected from the horizon-scale emission structure around supermassive black holes, and we apply this framework to a library of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations and associated general relativistic ray-traced images relevant for Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of Sgr A*. We find that the variability power spectrum is generically a red-noise process in both the temporal and spatial dimensions, with the peak in power occurring on the longest timescales and largest spatial scales. When both the time-averaged source structure and the spatially integrated light-curve variability are removed, the residual power spectrum exhibits a universal broken power-law behavior. On small spatial frequencies, the residual power spectrum rises as the square of the spatial frequency and is proportional to the variance in the centroid of emission. Beyond some peak in variability power, the residual power spectrum falls as that of the time-averaged source structure, which is similar across simulations; this behavior can be naturally explained if the variability arises from a multiplicative random field that has a steeper high-frequency power-law index than that of the time-averaged source structure. We briefly explore the ability of power spectral variability studies to constrain physical parameters relevant for the GRMHD simulations, which can be scaled to provide predictions for black holes in a range of systems in the optically thin regime. We present specific expectations for the behavior of the M87* and Sgr A* accretion flows as observed by the EHT. © 2022. The Author(s). Our main approach is to compare resolved EHT data at 230 GHz and unresolved non-EHT observations from radio to X-ray wavelengths to predictions from a library of models based on time-dependent general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations, including aligned, tilted, and stellar-wind-fed simulations; radiative transfer is performed assuming both thermal and nonthermal electron distribution functions. We test the models against 11 constraints drawn from EHT 230 GHz data and observations at 86 GHz, 2.2 μm, and in the X-ray. All models fail at least one constraint. Light-curve variability provides a particularly severe constraint, failing nearly all strongly magnetized (magnetically arrested disk (MAD)) models and a large fraction of weakly magnetized models. A number of models fail only the variability constraints. We identify a promising cluster of these models, which are MAD and have inclination i ≤ 30°. They have accretion rate (5.2–9.5) × 10−9 M⊙ yr−1, bolometric luminosity (6.8–9.2) × 1035 erg s−1, and outflow power (1.3–4.8) × 1038 erg s−1. We also find that all models with i ≥ 70° fail at least two constraints, as do all models with equal ion and electron temperature; exploratory, nonthermal model sets tend to have higher 2.2 μm flux density; and the population of cold electrons is limited by X-ray constraints due to the risk of bremsstrahlung overproduction. Finally, we discuss physical and numerical limitations of the models, highlighting the possible importance of kinetic effects and duration of the simulations. © 2022. The Author(s). Real visual-world datasets tend to have few classes with large numbers of samples (i.e., head classes) and many others with smaller numbers of samples (i.e., tail classes). Unfortunately, this imbalance enables a visual recognition system to perform well on head classes but poorly on tail classes. To alleviate this imbalance, we present BLT, a novel data augmentation technique that generates extra training samples for tail classes to improve the generalization performance of a classifier. Unlike prior long-tail approaches that rely on generative models (e.g., GANs or VQ-VAEs) to augment a dataset, BLT uses a gradient-ascent-based image generation algorithm that requires significantly less training time and computational resources. BLT avoids the use of dedicated generative networks, which adds significant computational overhead and require elaborate training procedures. Our experiments on natural and synthetic long-tailed datasets and across different network architectures demonstrate that BLT consistently improves the average classification performance of tail classes by \(11\%\) w.r.t. the common approach that balances the dataset by oversampling tail-class images. BLT maintains the accuracy on head classes while improving the performance on tail classes.

We present a new approach to rendering a geometrically-correct user-perspective view for a magic lens interface, based on leveraging the gradients in the real world scene. Our approach couples a recent gradient-domain image-based rendering method with a novel semi-dense stereo matching algorithm. Our stereo algorithm borrows ideas from PatchMatch, and adapts them to semi-dense stereo. This approach is implemented in a prototype device build from off-the-shelf hardware, with no active depth sensing. Despite the limited depth data, we achieve high-quality rendering for the user-perspective magic lens.

The ability to engage in goal-oriented conversations has allowed humans to gain knowledge, reduce uncertainty, and perform tasks more efficiently. Artificial agents, however, are still far behind humans in having goal-driven conversations. In this work, we focus on the task of goal-oriented visual dialogue, aiming to automatically generate a series of questions about an image with a single objective. This task is challenging since these questions must not only be consistent with a strategy to achieve a goal, but also consider the contextual information in the image. We propose an end-to-end goal-oriented visual dialogue system, that combines reinforcement learning with regularized information gain. Unlike previous approaches that have been proposed for the task, our work is motivated by the Rational Speech Act framework, which models the process of human inquiry to reach a goal. We test the two versions of our model on the GuessWhat?! dataset, obtaining significant results that outperform the current state-of-the-art models in the task of generating questions to find an undisclosed object in an image., Comment: Accepted to ACL 2019

Multilevel image segmentation is a technique that divides images into multiple homogeneous regions. In order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of multilevel image thresholding segmentation, we propose a segmentation algorithm based on two-dimensional (2D) Kullback-Leibler(K-L) divergence and modified Particle Swarm Optimization (MPSO). This approach calculates the 2D K-L divergence between an image and its segmented result by adopting 2D histogram as the distribution function, then employs the sum of divergences of different regions as the fitness function of MPSO to seek the optimal thresholds. The proposed 2D K-L divergence improves the accuracy of image segmentation; the MPSO overcomes the drawback of premature convergence of PSO by improving the location update formulation and the global best position of particles, and reduces drastically the time complexity of multilevel thresholding segmentation. Experiments were conducted extensively on the Berkeley Segmentation Dataset and Benchmark (BSDS300), and four performance indices of image segmentation - BDE, PRI, GCE and VOI - were tested. The results show the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Virtually navigating through photos from a 3D image-based reconstruction has recently become very popular in many applications. In this paper, we consider a particular virtual travel maneuver that is important for this type of virtual navigation---orbiting to photos that can see a point-of-interest (POI). The main challenge with this particular type of orbiting is how to give appropriate feedback to the user regarding the existence and information of each photo in 3D while allowing the user to manipulate three degrees-of-freedom (DoF) for orbiting around the POI. We present a hybrid approach that combines features from two baselines---proxy plane and thumbnail approaches. Experimental results indicate that users rated our hybrid approach more favorably for several qualitative questionnaire statements, and that the hybrid approach is preferred over both baselines for outdoor scenes.

With the proliferation of small-screen computing devices, there has been a continuous trend in reducing the size of interface elements. In virtual keyboards, this allows for more characters in a layout and additional function widgets. However, vision-based interfaces (VBIs) have only been investigated with large (e.g., full-screen) keyboards. To understand how key size reduction affects the accuracy and speed performance of text entry VBIs, we evaluated gaze-controlled VBI (g-VBI) and head-controlled VBI (h-VBI) with unconventionally small (0.4°, 0.6°, 0.8° and 1°) keys. Novices (N = 26) yielded significantly more accurate and fast text production with h-VBI than with g-VBI, while the performance of experts (N = 12) for both VBIs was nearly equal when a 0.8--1° key size was used. We discuss advantages and limitations of the VBIs for typing with ultra-small keyboards and emphasize relevant factors for designing such systems.

This work addresses the novel problem of one-shot one-class classification. The goal is to estimate a classification decision boundary for a novel class based on a single image example. Our method exploits transfer learning to model the transformation from a representation of the input, extracted by a Convolutional Neural Network, to a classification decision boundary. We use a deep neural network to learn this transformation from a large labelled dataset of images and their associated class decision boundaries generated from ImageNet, and then apply the learned decision boundary to classify subsequent query images. We tested our approach on several benchmark datasets and significantly outperformed the baseline methods.

Producing sports highlights is a labor-intensive work that requires some degree of specialization. We propose a model capable of automatically generating sports highlights with a focus on cricket. Cricket is a sport with a complex set of rules and is played for a longer time than most other sports. In this paper we propose a model that considers both event-based and excitement-based features to recognize and clip important events in a cricket match. Replays, audio intensity, player celebration, and playfield scenarios are examples of cues used to capture such events. To evaluate our framework, we conducted a set of experiments ranging from user studies to a comparison analysis between our highlights and the ones provided by the official broadcasters. The general approval by users and the significant overlap between both kinds of highlights indicate the usefulness of our model in real-life scenarios.

microRNA (miRNA) activity and regulation are of increasing interest as new therapeutic targets. Traditional approaches to assess miRNA levels in cells rely on RNA sequencing or quantitative PCR. While useful, these approaches are based on RNA extraction and cannot be applied in real-time to observe miRNA activity with single-cell resolution. We developed a green fluorescence protein (GFP)-based reporter system that allows for a direct, real-time readout of changes in miRNA activity in live cells. The miRNA activity reporter (MiRAR) consists of GFP fused to a 3&prime, untranslated region containing specific miRNA binding sites, resulting in miRNA activity-dependent GFP expression. Using qPCR, we verified the inverse relationship of GFP fluorescence and miRNA levels. We demonstrated that this novel optogenetic reporter system quantifies cellular levels of the tumor suppressor miRNA let-7 in real-time in single Human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK 293) cells. Our data shows that the MiRAR can be applied to detect changes in miRNA levels upon disruption of miRNA degradation pathways. We further show that the reporter could be adapted to monitor another disease-relevant miRNA, miR-122. With trivial modifications, this approach could be applied across the miRNome for quantification of many specific miRNA in cell cultures, tissues, or transgenic animal models.

Additional illumination improves the capture of omnidirectional 360° video and images, especially for dark or high-contrast environments. There is no "behind" for 360° cameras, so the placement of lights is a problem. We explore ways to position lights on some 360° cameras, and propose two good locations.

This editorial introduction complements the shorter introduction to the first part of the two-part special issue on Behavior Understanding for Arts and Entertainment. It offers a more expansive discussion of the use of behavior analysis for interactive systems that involve creativity, either for the producer or the consumer of such a system. We first summarise the two articles that appear in this second part of the special issue. We then discuss general questions and challenges in this domain that were suggested by the entire set of seven articles of the special issue and by the comments of the reviewers of these articles.

Navigating through a virtual, 3D reconstructed scene has recently become very important in many applications. A popular approach is to virtually travel to the photos used in reconstructing the scene; such an approach may be generally termed a "snapping-to-photos" virtual travel interface. While previous work has either used fully constrained interfaces (always at the photos) or minimally constrained interfaces (free-flight navigation), in this paper we introduce new snapping-to-photos interfaces that lie in between these two extremes. Our snapping-to-photos interfaces snap the view to a photo in 3D based on viewpoint similarity and optionally the user's mouse cursor or finger-tap position. Experimental results, with both indoor and outdoor scene reconstructions, found that our snapping-to-photos interfaces are preferred over the baseline fully constrained-to-photos interface, that there exist differences between indoor and outdoor scenes, and that users preferred and were able to reach target photos better with click-to-snap point-of-interest snapping compared to automatic point-of-view snapping.

In this paper, we consider the problem of rendering novel views of a live unprepared scene from video input, important to many application scenarios (such as telepresence and remote collaboration). We present an optimization approach to improving incomplete scene reconstructions captured in real time with a single moving monocular camera. We take semi-dense depth maps and convert them into a dense scene model, suitable for rendering plausible novel views of the scene using conventional image-based rendering. Our implementation densifies depth maps at the rate they are generated, and enables us to generate novel views of live scenes with no pre-capture or preprocessing. In evaluations comparing with other approaches, our method performs well even on difficult scenes, and results in higherquality novel views.

While RANSAC-based methods are robust to incorrect image correspondences (outliers), their hypothesis generators are not robust to correct image correspondences (inliers) with positional error (noise). This slows down their convergence because hypotheses drawn from a minimal set of noisy inliers can deviate significantly from the optimal model. This work addresses this problem by introducing ANSAC, a RANSAC-based estimator that accounts for noise by adaptively using more than the minimal number of correspondences required to generate a hypothesis. ANSAC estimates the inlier ratio (the fraction of correct correspondences) of several ranked subsets of candidate correspondences and generates hypotheses from them. Its hypothesis-generation mechanism prioritizes the use of subsets with high inlier ratio to generate high-quality hypotheses. ANSAC uses an early termination criterion that keeps track of the inlier ratio history and terminates when it has not changed significantly for a period of time. The experiments show that ANSAC finds good homography and fundamental matrix estimates in a few iterations, consistently outperforming state-of-the-art methods.

We present a prototype of a smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) viewer, which can cover nearly the full human field-of-view (FOV). The prototype suggests that such extensions are feasible ways to significantly expand the FOV of standard VR viewers. The concept can be employed for future VR viewers or it can even be retrofitted to some existing ones.

We present an approach and prototype implementation to initialization-free real-time tracking and mapping that supports any type of camera motion in 3D environments, that is, parallax-inducing as well as rotation-only motions. Our approach effectively behaves like a keyframe-based Simultaneous Localization and Mapping system or a panorama tracking and mapping system, depending on the camera movement. It seamlessly switches between the two modes and is thus able to track and map through arbitrary sequences of parallax-inducing and rotation-only camera movements. The system integrates both model-based and model-free tracking, automatically choosing between the two depending on the situation, and subsequently uses the "Geometric Robust Information Criterion" to decide whether the current camera motion can best be represented as a parallax-inducing motion or a rotation-only motion. It continues to collect and map data after tracking failure by creating separate tracks which are later merged if they are found to overlap. This is in contrast to most existing tracking and mapping systems, which suspend tracking and mapping and thus discard valuable data until relocalization with respect to the initial map is successful. We tested our prototype implementation on a variety of video sequences, successfully tracking through different camera motions and fully automatically building combinations of panoramas and 3D structure.

Encouraging joint efforts among computational scientists could tremendously enhance their speed of response to a changing landscape.

People naturally interact with the world multimodally, through both parallel and sequential use of multiple perceptual modalities. Multimodal human-computer interaction has sought for decades to endow computers with similar capabilities, in order to provide more natural, powerful, and compelling interactive experiences. With the rapid advance in non-desktop computing generated by powerful mobile devices and affordable sensors in recent years, multimodal research that leverages speech, touch, vision, and gesture is on the rise. This paper provides a brief and personal review of some of the key aspects and issues in multimodal interaction, touching on the history, opportunities, and challenges of the area, especially in the area of multimodal integration. We review the question of early vs. late integration and find inspiration in recent evidence in biological sensory integration. Finally, we list challenges that lie ahead for research in multimodal human-computer interaction.

This work introduces the one-class slab SVM (OCSSVM), a one-class classifier that aims at improving the performance of the one-class SVM. The proposed strategy reduces the false positive rate and increases the accuracy of detecting instances from novel classes. To this end, it uses two parallel hyperplanes to learn the normal region of the decision scores of the target class. OCSSVM extends one-class SVM since it can scale and learn non-linear decision functions via kernel methods. The experiments on two publicly available datasets show that OCSSVM can consistently outperform the one-class SVM and perform comparable to or better than other state-of-the-art one-class classifiers.

Planar markers enable an augmented reality (AR) system to estimate the pose of objects from images containing them. However, conventional markers are difficult to detect in blurred or defocused images. We propose a new marker and a new detection and identification method that is designed to work under such conditions. The problem of conventional markers is that their patterns consist of high-frequency components such as sharp edges which are attenuated in blurred or defocused images. Our marker consists of a single low-frequency component. We call it a mono-spectrum marker. The mono-spectrum marker can be detected in real time with a GPU. In experiments, we confirm that the mono-spectrum marker can be accurately detected in blurred and defocused images in real time. Using these markers can increase the performance and robustness of AR systems and other vision applications that require detection or tracking of defined markers.
