The addiction cycle has been proposed as a framework for understanding the progression of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in terms of psychological and biological domains, including reward drinking/incentive salience, relief drinking/negative emotionality, and loss of control/executive functioning impairment. To have utility in clinical practice, self-report measures of these domains that are applicable across sociodemographic groups and associated with clinical outcomes are needed. This study sought to validate domains from self-report measures and to test whether domains are measurement invariant across sociodemographic groups and associated with treatment outcomes.Secondary analysis of individuals with AUD (Fifteen self-report items were used as indicators of the addiction cycle domains, with sociodemographic differences in measurement by sex, age, race, education, and AUD symptoms. Relief/negative emotionality and reward/incentive salience were significantly associated with outcomes at 1 and 3 years following treatment, and executive functioning also predicted nonabstinent recovery at 3 years.The results support the utility of domains relevant to the addiction cycle in predicting AUD treatment outcomes and recovery among individuals who sought treatment for AUD. The addiction cycle domains were more strongly associated with outcomes than other measures clinicians might use to predict outcomes (e.g., AUD symptoms). Future research should continue to develop and refine the items and test whether the addiction cycle domains can inform treatment planning. Drinking motives, or reasons people choose to drink, are well-established risk factors for alcohol use and related negative consequences. Recent research has shown utility in a self-determination theory (SDT) approach for describing motivation for engaging in behaviors that reduce the harms associated with alcohol use (i.e., drinking responsibly). In the present study, we examined the relationship between drinking motives and motivations for drinking responsibly as well as their unique and incremental associations with alcohol-related outcomes (protective behavioral strategies [PBS], consumption, and negative consequences) in two samples of college student drinkers: (a) a random sample (n = 507) recruited from a Hispanic-Serving Institution on the U.S. border with Mexico (Mage = 22.84, SD = 5.84; 67.3% female; 90.9% Hispanic) and (b) a convenience sample (n = 2,808) from Psychology Department research participation pools at 10 universities in 8 U.S. states (Mage = 20.59, SD = 4.18; 72.9% female; 58.2% non-Hispanic White). Autonomous motivations (experience of volition and choice) for drinking responsibly were negatively correlated with drinking motives, but these correlations were small-to-medium in magnitude suggesting nonredundancy between the constructs. Drinking motives were risk factors for alcohol-related outcomes, especially alcohol-related problems, and autonomous motivations for drinking responsibly were protective factors for alcohol-related outcomes, especially PBS. Both motivational constructs predicted alcohol-related outcomes beyond the other, but drinking motives generally accounted for more variance. These findings suggest that integrating motivation in relation to both drinking and drinking responsibly may lead to a better understanding of alcohol-related behaviors and the associated negative consequences among college students. Cannabis use continues to escalate among emerging adults and college attendance may be a risk factor for use. Severe cases of cannabis use can escalate to a cannabis use disorder, which is associated with worse psychosocial functioning. Predictors of cannabis use consequences and cannabis use disorder symptom severity have been identified; however, they typically employ a narrow set of predictors and rely on linear models. Machine learning is well suited for exploratory data analyses of high-dimensional data. This study applied decision tree learning to identify predictors of cannabis user status, negative cannabis-related consequences, and cannabis use disorder symptoms. Undergraduate college students (N = 7000) were recruited from nine universities in nine states across the U.S. Among the 7 trees, 24 splits created by 15 distinct predictors were identified. Consistent with prior research, one's beliefs about cannabis were strong predictors of user status. Negative reinforcement cannabis use motives were the most consistent predictors of cannabis use disorder symptoms, and past month cannabis use was the most consistent predictor of probable cannabis use disorder. Typical frequency of cannabis use was the only predictor of negative cannabis-related consequences. Our results demonstrate that decision trees are a useful methodological tool for identifying targets for future clinical research.

BACKGROUND: Progression through the stages of change is proposed to be a mechanism underlying the effects of treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, examining stages of change as a mechanism of treatment effects requires that the measure is invariant across patient subgroups, treatment conditions, and time. In the present study, we examined measurement invariance of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment Scale (URICA) in Project MATCH using an exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) approach. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of Project MATCH (N=1726; M(age)=40.2, SD=10.9; 75.7% male; 80.0% non-Hispanic white), a multisite randomized clinical trial that tested three AUD treatments: Motivational Enhancement Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, or Twelve-Step Facilitation. Participants completed the 24-item URICA for assessing the stages of change in relation to drinking at baseline and posttreatment (3 months after baseline). RESULTS: A 4-factor ESEM provided a good fit to the data and a better fit to the data than a conventional 4-factor confirmatory factor analysis model. Further, the URICA demonstrated scalar invariance across each patient subgroup at baseline (sex, ethnicity, marital status, education, and parental history of AUD) and treatment condition at follow-up. However, the URICA was not longitudinally invariant as the metric model resulted in a significant decrement in model fit. CONCLUSIONS: The measurement invariance of the URICA over time was not supported. Longitudinally invariant measures of the stages of change are needed to appropriately test the proposal that progression through the stages explains treatment effects.

Objective The high rate of statistically significant findings in the sciences that do not replicate in a new sample has been described as a "replication crisis." Few replication attempts have been conducted in studies of alcohol use disorder (AUD), and the best method for determining whether a finding replicates has not been explored. The goal of the current study was to conduct direct replications within a multisite AUD-randomized controlled trial and to test a range of replication metrics. Method We used data from a large AUD clinical trial (Project Matching Alcoholism Treatments and Client Heterogeneity [Project MATCH], n = 1,726) to simulate direct replication attempts. We examined associations between drinking intensity and negative alcohol-related consequences (Model 1), sex differences in drinking intensity (Model 2), and reductions in drinking following treatment (Model 3). We treated each of the 11 data collection sites as unique studies such that each subsample was treated as an "original" study, and the remaining 10 subsamples were viewed as "replication" studies. Replicability metrics included the consistency of statistical significance, overlapping confidence intervals, and consistency of the direction of the effect. We also tested effect replication and heterogeneity using meta-analysis. Results We observed between 0% and 100% replicability across the replicability metrics depending on which subsample was treated as the "original" study. Meta-analyses indicated results were more similar across subsamples with no significant heterogeneity for Models 1 and 2. Conclusions We recommend researchers focus on effect sizes and use meta-analysis to evaluate the level of replicability. OBJECTIVE: Use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) has been associated with reduced alcohol-related harms among college students. However, most of this research has been conducted among U.S. samples. The present study examines the use of PBS in an international context. METHOD: Participants (n = 1512) were recruited from universities in Spain (n = 298), Argentina (n = 439), and the U.S. (n = 775) to determine if there are differences in PBS use across countries and/or across sex. Further, we examined whether the association between PBS use and negative consequences differ across country and sex. RESULTS: We found that U.S. students reported the most frequent use of Stopping/Limiting Drinking PBS (M = 3.32, SD = 1.23) compared to Argentine (M = 2.89, SD = 0.97) and Spanish (M = 2.83, SD = 0.94) students. Argentine students reported the least frequent use of Serious Harm Reduction PBS (M = 4.57, SD = 0.99) compared to U.S. (M = 5.09, SD = 0.98) and Spanish (M = 5.03, SD = 0.78) students. Elastic net regression analyses stratified by country indicated most individual PBS predicted decreased negative alcohol-related consequences, although two items consistently predicted increased consequences and we observed some variability in the most predictive specific strategies in each country. The need for fast and effective Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques is ever present. Existing techniques such as ultrasonic testing, whilst established and reliable, face many limitations when considering large structures such as those found in the aerospace and green energy sectors. Wave mode, as well as other wavenumber based filtering techniques have been presented to address many of these limitations. This work describes a novel application of Wave Mode Spectroscopy (WMS) along with feature detection for complex geometric shapes. The specimen's geometry is found during the wavefields measurement through the use of a 3D Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV) allowing the wavefield to be mapped to a 2D plane with limited distortion of the wavelength and without any prior knowledge of the part's geometry. This was shown to allow WMS to be applied to continuous, multi-frequency wavefields and generate accurate thickness maps. Monogenic signal analysis has been applied to the same measurement data to generate amplitude maps that allow the automatic detection of edge features through the use of a Canny edge detection algorithm.

Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is commonly assessed using self-report items based on its symptoms as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) that are scored on a dichotomous scale (yes/no) to indicate symptom presence; however, scoring items on a dichotomy may result in relatively limited sensitivity for research. Thus, we developed a 13-item measure of CUD, the Self-Reported Symptoms of CUD (SRSCUD), based on the 11 symptoms described in the DSM-5 that is scored on a 4-point response scale indicating degree of severity. In the present study, we conduct an initial evaluation of the psychometric properties of the SRSCUD. Past-month cannabis users (N = 2,077) were recruited from nine universities in nine states throughout the U.S. Each item of the SRSCUD loaded saliently onto a single factor of CUD symptoms in both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The SRSCUD was strongly correlated with measures of cannabis use, dependence severity, and cannabis-related problems. In addition, the SRSCUD was moderately positively correlated with a well-known risk factor for CUD (coping motives) and moderately negatively correlated with a well-known protective factor for CUD (protective behavioral strategies). These correlations mostly remained statistically significant while controlling for CUD symptom count and diagnosis using dichotomized SRSCUD items. Receiver operator characteristic curve analyses revealed that the SRSCUD had excellent sensitivity/specificity for predicting probable CUD. Although more research evaluating performance of the SRSCUD compared to a clinical diagnosis is needed, we found preliminary evidence for construct validity of this measure. OBJECTIVE: Fear of negative evaluation (FNE) is a key trait of social anxiety and has been linked to isolation and low self-esteem. Impulsivity has been shown to amplify the risk of socially anxious individuals engaging in risky behaviors such as suicidal behaviors; yet little research has examined associations between FNE and suicidality nor the relationship between FNE and impulsivity. PARTICIPANTS/METHODS: This study tested whether FNE was associated with suicidal ideation in a sample of 1,816 college students from 10 universities. Analyses also examined whether impulsivity-like traits moderated the relationship between FNE and suicidal ideation. RESULTS: Results showed that FNE was significantly associated with suicidal ideation and the positive association between FNE and suicidal ideation was strongest among individuals with higher negative urgency and lower perseverance. CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight FNE as an important risk factor of suicidal ideation in college students and illuminates potential influence of impulsivity on this relationship.

The evidence for the efficacy of harm reduction approaches to harmful alcohol use has accumulated over the past 30 years. Self-determination theory (SDT; Ryan and Deci 2017) offers a useful framework for understanding why people engage in alcohol harm reduction behaviors, as well as for delineating active ingredients of harm reduction interventions and individual characteristics that influence response to intervention. In the current paper, we sought to advance a research agenda for applying SDT to alcohol harm reduction behaviors. Specifically, we provide specific examples of the utility of SDT in advancing research on alcohol harm reduction behaviors and provide recommendations for future studies to address issues related to measurement, generalizability, temporal directionality, and causal relationships in examining the constructs of SDT and alcohol harm reduction behaviors. We also suggest that future research apply SDT to advance the understanding of how, why, and for whom harm reduction interventions are most effective. Finally, we provide recommendations for how SDT could potentially be applied to develop novel alcohol interventions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Psychosocial functioning among individuals who exceed low-risk drinking limits (exceed three to four standard drinks for women/men) is heterogeneous. Among those who receive treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD), recent research found that more than one-half of those who exceeded low-risk limits (i.e. treatment non-responders) reported good psychosocial functioning, commensurate with those who were abstinent or low-risk drinkers (i.e. treatment responders) up to 1 year following treatment. This study aimed to determine if good levels of psychosocial functioning are maintained beyond 1 year. DESIGN Secondary analysis of 3-year follow-up data from Project MATCH (Matching Alcoholism Treatment to Client Heterogeneity) and the Combined Pharmacotherapies and Behavioral Interventions study (COMBINE), multi-site alcohol clinical trials conducted in the United States. SETTING Eleven sites in COMBINE and nine sites in Project MATCH. PARTICIPANTS Individuals with AUD from COMBINE and Project MATCH (n = 1383 and n = 1726) characterized in terms of drinking/functioning at 1-year follow-up and retained at 3-year (n = 641 and n = 790) post-treatment follow-ups. MEASUREMENTS Alcohol consumption measured by Form-90 and psychosocial functioning assessed by various instruments at 3 years post-treatment FINDINGS: High-functioning non-responders at 1 year post-treatment maintained a high level of functioning 2 years later and were not significantly different from the abstainers/low-risk drinkers on any functional outcomes (e.g. SF12 Mental Health Mean difference: -1.38 [95% confidence interval (CI) = -4.34, 1.57), SF12 Physical Health Mean difference: -0.43 (95% CI = -2.28, 3.13)]. CONCLUSIONS Approximately one-half of those who engage in some heavy drinking in the year following treatment for alcohol use disorder appear to maintain high levels of psychosocial functioning up to 3 years following treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Four decades ago the “controlled drinking” controversy roiled the alcohol field. Data have subsequently accumulated indicating that non-abstinent alcohol use disorder (AUD) recovery is achievable, but questions remain whether it is sustainable long-term. This study examined whether non-abstinent recovery at three years following AUD treatment is associated with better functioning at 10 years following treatment. METHODS: Data were from the 10-year follow-up of Project MATCH (New Mexico site only, n=146; 30.1% female, 58.6% non-White). Recovery was defined by latent profile analyses based on psychosocial functioning and alcohol consumption three years following treatment. Drinking practices and consequences, depression, purpose in life, and anger were assessed 10 years following treatment. Distal outcome analyses examined differences in drinking and functional outcomes at 10 years as a function of the 3-year latent profiles. Analyses were pre-registered at https://osf.io/3hbxr. RESULTS: Four latent profiles identified at three years following treatment (i.e., low functioning frequent heavy drinkers, low functioning infrequent heavy drinkers, high functioning heavy drinkers, and high functioning infrequent non-heavy drinkers) were significantly associated with outcomes ten years following treatment. The two high functioning profiles at three years had the highest level of psychological functioning at ten years post-treatment, regardless of alcohol consumption level. Abstinence at three years did not predict better psychological functioning at ten years. CONCLUSIONS: Non-abstinent AUD recovery is possible and is sustainable for up to 10 years following treatment. The current findings align with recent proposals to move beyond relying on alcohol consumption as a central defining feature of AUD recovery.

Racial microaggressions are common experiences for students of color on college campuses. Given prior research connecting microaggressions to negative mental health outcomes, it is important to better understand the social context and process through which microaggressions are associated with poorer mental health. In addition, we put forth a psycho-sociological approach to microaggressions, integrating an attention to both individual psychology and broader social structure. Specifically, the present study investigated whether the indirect association of school/workplace microaggressions and internalizing symptoms (i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress) through problem-focused thoughts (a subset of ruminative thinking) differed as a function of horizontal and vertical dimensions of individualism and collectivism among a racially diverse sample of non-White college students (n = 549) from two universities in the United States. As hypothesized, problem-focused thoughts mediated the associations between school/workplace microaggressions and all three negative mental health symptoms. Further, the indirect effect of school/workplace microaggressions on psychological health through problem-focused thoughts was stronger in students with high levels of vertical individualism (i.e., autonomous but recognize/accept inequality among individuals), compared to students with low or average levels. Our findings suggest that students of color who endorse vertical individualism are at a relatively greater risk of negative mental health outcomes related to school/workplace microaggressions via problem-focused thoughts. Future research is needed to examine additional factors that may buffer or strengthen the pathways between microaggressions and negative mental health in students of color.

Structural health monitoring has gained wide appeal for applications with high inspection costs, such as aircraft and wind turbines. As the structures and materials used in these industries evolve, so too must the technologies used to monitor them. Acoustic emission is a passive method of detecting damage which lends itself well to structural health monitoring. One form of acoustic emission monitoring, known as wavestreaming, involves intermittently recording data for set periods of time and using the sequential recordings to detect changes in the state of the structure. However, at present, there is no standard method for selecting appropriate wavestream recording parameters, such as their length or their interval of collection. This article investigates a method of optimising acoustic emission wavestreaming for structural health monitoring purposes by introducing the novel concept of adjoining consecutive discrete acoustic emission hit signals to create synthetic wavestreams. To this end, a pre-notched 492 mm × 67.5 mm × 20 mm, 300M grade steel cantilever specimen was subject to cyclic loading and both acoustic emission hit data and conventional wavestreams were collected as a crack grew in the notched region; crack growth activity was also monitored using digital image correlation for comparison. To demonstrate the proposed optimisation process, four sets of synthetic wavestreams were created from the hit data, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 s in length, and compared with the 1.5-s-long conventional wavestreams. The activity of the peak frequency and frequency centroid bands of interest within the conventional and synthetic wavestreams were examined to determine whether or not cracking activity could be inferred through them. Across comparisons of all data, it was found that the 0.5-s-long synthetic wavestreams contained enough information to identify the same trends as the conventional wavestreams for this application; thus, the use of synthetic wavestreams as a tool for selecting an appropriate wavestream recording length was demonstrated.

This study examined marijuana-use motives and protective behavioral strategies (PBS) as within- and between-subject predictors of marijuana-related outcomes. Furthermore, we explored differences between a specific marijuana-related event (i.e., 4/20) compared with typical weekend/weekday use. Forty-three college student marijuana users (31 females) completed daily surveys for 12 days (April 15–April 26, 2016). Four motives (coping, conformity, enhancement, and social) were associated with more negative consequences within-subjects. Enhancement and conformity motives were also associated with a higher number of use sessions, and expansion motives were associated with higher subjective high. Marijuana PBS use (total score) was associated with fewer sessions and lower subjective high within-subjects. Social motives were higher, whereas PBS use and coping motives were lower on 4/20 compared with other days. Our findings support PBS and certain use motives as promising intervention targets for college student marijuana users.

The Transtheoretical Model supports that readiness to change should predict actual substance-related behavior change, though this relationship is surprisingly modest. Across several behavioral domains, individuals tend to have unrealistic expectations regarding the amount of effort and time required to successfully change one’s behaviors, dubbed the False Hope Syndrome. Based on the False Hope Syndrome, we expect that the standard method of measuring self-reported readiness to change is inaccurate and overestimated. To test this hypothesis, we experimentally manipulated the level of cognitive effort or focus on the practical implications of changing substance use prior to completing readiness to change measures. College students from a large southwestern university who reported using substances in the past 30 days (n = 345) were recruited from a psychology department participant pool to complete this experimental study online. Participants were randomized to one of three conditions: 1) standard low effort condition, 2) medium effort condition (had to select likes/dislikes of substance use, and negative consequences of changing one’s use), and 3) high effort condition (also provided text responses to how they would handle difficult situations related to changing their substance use). We conducted one-way ANOVAs with Tukey post-hoc comparisons to examine differences on three measures of readiness to change: the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA) scale for overall substance use as well as the readiness and motivation rulers for overall substance use, alcohol use, and cannabis use. Contrary to our hypothesis, all significant statistical tests supported higher cognitive effort conditions reporting higher readiness to change. Although effect sizes were modest, higher cognitive effort appeared to increase self-reported readiness to change substance use. To address the present study’s limitations, additional work is needed to test how self-reported readiness to change relates to actual behavior change when assessed under the different effort conditions.

The purpose of this study was to examine associations between psychotherapy session attendance, alcohol treatment outcomes, and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) attendance.Using data from Project MATCH, repeated measures latent class analyses of psychotherapy session attendance were conducted among participants in the outpatient arm who were randomly assigned to complete 12-session cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT; n = 301), 12-session twelve-step facilitation (TSF; n = 335), or 4-session motivational enhancement therapy (MET; n = 316). Associations between psychotherapy attendance classes, heavy drinking, alcohol-related consequences, psychosocial functioning, and AA attendance were examined at posttreatment (97% retention), 1-year posttreatment (92% retention), and 3-years posttreatment (85% retention).In general, participants who attended all 12 CBT/TSF sessions had significantly fewer heavy drinking days and alcohol-related consequences at all posttreatment time points than participants who attended 0-2 CBT/TSF sessions. Participants who attended all four MET sessions generally had significantly fewer heavy drinking days and alcohol-related consequences at posttreatment and 1-year posttreatment than participants who attended 0-1 MET sessions. Participants who attended more TSF and MET sessions generally attended more AA meetings, and participants who attended less CBT sessions generally attended fewer AA meetings.With some exceptions, attending all sessions in CBT, TSF, and MET was related to the most favorable heavy drinking and alcohol-related consequences outcomes. The goals of individuals seeking treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) are typically quantified as abstinent or nonabstinent (e.g., moderate drinking) goals. However, treatment goals can vary over time and be influenced by life circumstances. This study aims to identify predictors of treatment goal change and direction of change from baseline to six-month follow-up among individuals seeking treatment for AUD.This study is a secondary analysis of data from the Relapse Replication and Extension Project. The study included participants who completed assessments at baseline and six-month follow-up in the analysis (n = 441). We used decision trees to examine 111 potential predictors of treatment goal change. The study cross-validated results using random forests. The team examined changes in goal between baseline and follow-up (Decision Tree 1) and quantified them as being toward or away from a complete abstinence goal (Decision Tree 2).Nearly 50 % of the sample changed their treatment goal from baseline to 6 months, and 68.7 % changed from a nonabstinence goal toward a complete abstinence goal. The study identified seven unique predictors of goal change. The most common predictors of changing a treatment goal were number of recent treatment sessions prior to enrolling in the study, other substance use, negative affect, anxiety, social support, and baseline drinks per drinking day. Participants with a greater number of recent treatment sessions and who sought social support were most likely to change their goal. Additionally, individuals with more substance use tended to change away from complete abstinence goals. Cross-validation supported baseline drinks per drinking day, social support, baseline maximum blood alcohol concentration (BAC), lifetime tobacco use, baseline average BAC, lifetime cocaine use, Inventory of Drinking Situations total score, and Situational Confidence Questionnaire average score as important predictors.This study identified seven unique predictors of treatment goal change while in AUD treatment. Prior treatment, drinking to cope, and social support were most associated with goal changes. This information can inform providers who seek to understand factors associated with treatment goal selection and changes in goals during treatment.

This chapter introduces readers to the particularities associated with AE monitoring of metals and metallic structures through several example studies. The chapter begins with an overview of the failure mechanisms of metals, and a demonstration of AE’s potential as a diagnostic tool for understanding the evolution of dislocation structures during plastic deformation, up to the critical stage of crack initiation. The propagation of AE in metallic plate-like structures is then described alongside a study exemplifying the empirical determination of the dispersive properties of the primary Lamb wave modes in a 2 mm thick steel plate. As fatigue cracking is one of the most prominent causes of failure of metallic structures, three example studies are then described which highlight the ability of AE to detect, locate, and characterise cracking and crack growth. The first of these is a location study in which AE sources in a complex-geometry aluminium specimen subject to cyclic loading were located to within 3.42–20.2 mm of the cracking location, depending on the location method used. Two examples of AE characterisation approaches for identifying signals from fatigue cracking are then described; the first of which implements a principal component analysis of hit data collected from an aircraft landing gear component; and the second of which analyses the spectral information of wavestream recordings from a steel beam specimen. This chapter should educate the reader on a wide range of approaches to AE in metals, and further reading and examples can be found in the references contained throughout.

OBJECTIVE: Normative perceptions have been shown to mediate the effect of personality traits on cannabis outcomes. We examined descriptive norms, injunctive norms, and the role of cannabis in college life as possible mediators of the association between impulsivity-related traits (i.e., negative urgency, positive urgency, sensation seeking, perseverance, and premeditation) and cannabis outcomes (i.e., frequency of cannabis use and negative consequences) among college students from five countries. METHOD: A total of 1,175 college students (United States, n = 698; Argentina, n = 153; Spain, n = 178; Uruguay, n = 79; and Netherlands, n = 67) who were also cannabis users (i.e., reported cannabis use at least once within the previous month) completed an online survey. We used path analysis to test whether the proposed double-mediated paths (impulsivity-like traits→perceived cannabis norms→cannabis use frequency→negative cannabis-related consequences) were invariant across countries/cultures. RESULTS: Cannabis-related perceptions, particularly college cannabis beliefs and injunctive norms, significantly mediated the association between impulsivity and cannabis outcomes. Two significant double-mediated paths, which were invariant across sex and countries, were found: (a) higher positive urgency→higher endorsement of internalized norms→higher cannabis use frequency→more negative cannabis-related consequences and (b) higher sensation seeking→higher endorsement of injunctive norms→higher cannabis use frequency→more negative cannabis-related consequences. CONCLUSIONS: The study corroborates previous findings on normative perceptions mediating the effects of impulsivity-like traits on cannabis outcomes and suggests that these processes may operate similarly among college student cannabis users in different legal and cultural contexts. The findings highlight the need to address internalized norms and suggest these normative perceptions may be a good intervention candidate to reduce cannabis use/consequences.

Separately, research has identified use of marijuana protective behavioral strategies and marijuana refusal self-efficacy to be protective factors associated with less marijuana use and associated harms. To date, these factors have not been examined together. Using a large sample of college students recruited from 10 U.S. universities (n = 1,123), we examined the extent to which use of marijuana protective behavioral strategies and marijuana refusal self-efficacy have redundant, independent, or interactive effects on a wide range of marijuana-related outcomes using cross-sectional data. Across 9 marijuana-related outcomes, we found 1 significant buffering interaction (length of typical intoxication), 1 significant synergistic interaction (peak subjective intoxication), and 7 nonsignificant interactions (past month frequency, typical frequency, typical quantity, typical subjective intoxication, frequency of peak intoxication, negative consequences, and cannabis use disorder symptoms). Despite variability across distinct outcomes, on 8 of 9 of these outcomes, we found that individuals who reported high use of marijuana protective behavioral strategies and high levels of marijuana refusal self-efficacy demonstrated the lowest rates of marijuana use/harms. Our findings suggest that both of these factors are promising intervention targets, and future studies should examine distinct intervention strategies to modify use of marijuana protective behavioral strategies and marijuana refusal self-efficacy. Objective Alcohol Behavioral Couple Therapy (ABCT) is an efficacious alcohol treatment. The purpose of the study was to describe patient and partner language and therapist behavior during therapy sessions and test a proposed causal model linking active ingredients of ABCT as measured by therapist behaviors, hypothesized mechanisms of behavior change as measured by in-session patient and partner language, and alcohol use outcomes. Method Data came from couples in four ABCT clinical trials (N = 188; 86 males, 102 females, and their partners). Patient and partner verbal behaviors in session one and a mid-treatment session were coded using the System for Coding Couples' Interactions in Therapy–Alcohol. Therapist behavior was coded using the Couples Treatment Integrity Rating System. Percent days abstinent was calculated from daily drinking data for the first and second half of treatment and six months post-treatment. Results Therapists delivered an adequate level of the ABCT interventions during treatment. During treatment, couples increased positive behaviors, talked less about drinking, and decreased their amount of motivational language. Therapist behaviors did not predict patient or partner behaviors during treatment or drinking outcomes. Partner advice in the first session predicted poorer drinking outcomes. At mid-treatment, patient behaviors as a block, and specific behaviors of contemptuousness toward their partner and sustain talk, predicted poorer drinking outcomes. Conclusions During ABCT, patients decrease their drinking, and patient and partner behaviors change in predicted ways. Partner advice, patient contemptuousness, and patient sustain talk predicted poorer outcomes. Analyses of within-session verbal behavior did not support the hypothesized mechanisms for change for ABCT.

BACKGROUND: College students with more social anxiety symptoms are particularly vulnerable to problematic alcohol and marijuana use given their susceptibility for elevated anxiety symptoms in social settings combined with the normative nature of substance use. Existing research has established substance use as coping-motivated for these students when examining alcohol and marijuana use problems separately. The next step is to determine whether students with more social anxiety who use both substances do so for similar or different reasons. OBJECTIVES: The current study tested a comprehensive (i.e., all variables in the same model) motivational model of alcohol/marijuana use in a sample of college students from 10 universities across the U.S. who endorsed both past-month alcohol and marijuana use. METHODS: College students were recruited through psychology department participant pools and completed an online survey assessing mental health symptoms, substance use motives, and substances use behaviors. Current sample comprised concurrent alcohol/marijuana users (n = 2,034), 29.6% of whom endorsed clinically-indicated levels of social anxiety and nearly one-fourth had exceeded the cutoff for hazardous drinking (23.2%) and hazardous marijuana use (21.9%). RESULTS: Across both substances, coping motives significantly mediated the positive relationship between social anxiety symptoms and substance use problems. Unique to alcohol, conformity motives mediated the association between social anxiety symptoms and alcohol-related problems. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, students with more social anxiety who are focused on anxiety management may use either alcohol or marijuana; however, these students may experience more alcohol-related problems when drinking to fit in with peers.

Background Substance use disorder (SUD) during pregnancy requires efficacious interventions based on understanding the ebb and flow of risk and protective factors for substance use across time. To assess how these fluctuations are associated temporally with substance use, we used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to evaluate substance use risk (posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD] symptoms) and protective (prenatal fetal bonding) factors and their associations with prenatal substance use recorded in real time. Methods Pregnant women in SUD treatment (N = 33) with prior trauma exposure received smartphones with an EMA application that queried them thrice daily for 28 days about PTSD symptoms, prenatal bonding, and substance use. Results Nearly all (N = 32) provided EMA data resulting in 2049 EMA reports (74% compliance). Most participants reported tobacco (72%), alcohol (22%), heroin (41%), and/or other illicit drug (6%–31%) use at least once via EMA. There were moderate associations (average β = 0.23) between greater daily peak PTSD symptoms and substance use with significant effects on illicit drug (β = 0.37), cannabis (β = 0.35) and cigarette use (β = 0.24). Prenatal bonding subscales were modestly associated with substance use, with daily intensity of attachment low point associated with lower heroin (β=-0.34), but higher alcohol (β = 0.24) use. Quality of attachment low point was associated with higher cigarette use (β = 0.06). Conclusions Despite the SUD severity and social instability of this sample, we observed high rates of compliance. We found preliminary support suggesting daily PTSD symptoms as a risk factor and less consistent support for prenatal bonding as a protective factor for prenatal substance use.

OBJECTIVE: Among college samples, both alcohol and marijuana protective behavioral strategies (PBS) have been shown to mediate the effects of known risk factors (i.e., sex, age at substance use onset, college substance use beliefs, substance use motives, and impulsivity-like traits) on alcohol and marijuana outcomes. However, it is unknown whether PBS use would operate similarly for both substances among concurrent users. The present study examined which risk factors relate to alcohol/marijuana outcomes via alcohol/marijuana PBS use among a large group of concurrent alcohol/marijuana users. METHOD: Participants were college students who consumed both alcohol and marijuana at least 1 day in the previous month (n = 2,034; 69.08% female). RESULTS: Across both substances, PBS use significantly mediated the effects of sex (women reported higher PBS use), age at first use (having an older age at first use was associated with more PBS use), and college substance use beliefs (higher beliefs was associated with lower PBS use). Unique to alcohol outcomes, alcohol PBS use significantly mediated the effects of negative urgency, social motives, and enhancement motives (all associated with lower PBS use). Unique to marijuana outcomes, marijuana PBS use mediated the effects of coping, expansion (both associated with lower PBS use), and conformity motives (associated with more PBS use). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that PBS for both alcohol and marijuana can help explain why some risk factors are associated with alcohol/marijuana outcomes. Taken together, PBS use seems to be an important intervention target for alcohol/marijuana concurrent users.

The purpose of the present study was to examine tests of interaction effects between cannabis protective behavioral strategies use and a range of risk/protective factors for negative cannabis-related consequences. We recruited 2,226 college students (M(age) = 20.28, SD = 3.37; 68.8% female; 75.4% white) from 10 universities throughout the U.S. who reported using cannabis in the past month to complete an online survey. Measures assessed cannabis use, negative cannabis-related consequences, cannabis protective behavioral strategies use, and 35 risk/protective factors (including socio-demographic characteristics). Cannabis protective behavioral strategies use was negatively correlated with negative cannabis-related consequences while including the risk/protective factors as covariates. Most importantly, 33% and 54% of the interaction effects tested were statistically significant, depending on the covariates entered into the model. The interaction effects had a consistent pattern such that the positive association between greater risk and negative cannabis-related consequences was weaker as cannabis protective behavioral strategies use increased. Findings suggest that the nature of these interaction effects are not specific for any given risk/protective factor. We draw parallels to research on alcohol protective behavioral strategies and offer suggestions for moving the cannabis protective behavioral strategies field forward.

OBJECTIVE Research indicates that a substance user identity (i.e., drinking, smoking, and marijuana identity) is positively correlated with substance use-related outcomes (e.g., frequency, quantity, consequences, and disorder symptoms). The current study aimed to meta-analytically derive single, weighted effect size estimates of the identity-outcome association as well as to examine moderators (e.g., substance use type, explicit/implicit assessment, demographic characteristics, and research design) of this association. METHOD Random effects meta-analysis was conducted on 70 unique samples that assessed substance user identity and at least one substance use-related outcome (frequency, quantity, consequences, and/or disorder symptoms), and provided the necessary information for effect size calculations. RESULTS Substance user identity was found to be a statistically significant moderate-to-large correlate of all substance use-related outcomes examined in the current study (rw = .365, p < .001, rw² = .133). The strongest associations were observed between identity and disorder symptoms (alcohol) and frequency of substance use (tobacco or marijuana). In terms of moderators of the identity-outcome association, the link between explicit drinking identity and alcohol use-related outcomes appeared to be stronger in magnitude than the relationship between implicit drinking identity and alcohol use-related outcomes; however, this difference appears to be largely due to the finding that implicit measures have lower reliability. The strongest identity-outcome association was observed among younger individuals. CONCLUSIONS Substance user identity is clearly an important correlate of substance use-related outcomes and this association is stronger among younger individuals. Additional theoretical, empirical, and intervention research is needed to utilize knowledge gleaned from the current study on the identity-outcome association. Background: Cannabis protective behavioral strategies (PBS) are behaviors used before, during, after, and/or instead of cannabis use to reduce consumption, intoxication, and related harms. To leverage PBS to address the global health burden of cannabis use, especially in light of the changes in cannabis-related policies around the world, a better understanding of PBS across cultures is needed. In the present study, we conduct a cross-cultural examination of cannabis PBS use among college students. Method: Participants were 1175 college students (U.S. [n = 697], Argentina [n = 153], Uruguay [n = 46], Spain [n = 169], and the Netherlands [n = 66]) who reported past-month cannabis use (63.3% female; Mage = 20.96, SD = 3.95). Results: We found differences in the frequency of cannabis PBS use across countries such that the U.S. and Spain samples reported the most frequent cannabis PBS use and the Netherlands sample reported the least frequent cannabis PBS use. Although not statistically significant, we found that cannabis PBS use was positively correlated with cannabis-related outcomes (i.e., frequency, quantity, and negative consequences of cannabis use) among the Argentina and the Netherlands samples. Finally, across all countries but the Netherlands, females reported more frequent cannabis PBS use than males, but the associations of PBS with cannabis-related outcomes were larger for males than females. Conclusions: Given preliminary evidence for cultural differences in cannabis PBS use, future research is needed to better understand the cultural factors underlying these differences to inform the delivery of interventions aimed at reducing the harms of cannabis among college students.

Acoustic emission (AE) is an in situ Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technique, where a structure is monitored for the ultrasonic waves produced due to crack growth. A major challenge with AE when applied to aircraft, and other complex structures, is that wave propagation is significantly affected by stiffeners, holes, thickness changes and other complexity. This reduces the accuracy of traditional source location techniques, that are based on a singular propagating wave speed. The Delta-T method enables higher levels of accuracy by mapping the structure and accounting for these changes. In this work AE monitoring equipment was installed on a section of an aluminium Airbus A320 wing. Location trials showed the Delta-T technique improved the average error from 85mm to 23mm, for artificial Hsu-Nielson sources, compared to the commercial standard technique. Testing under fatigue however demonstrated the challenges encountered when inspecting 3D structures (due to multiple signal paths) with significant levels of background noise. Of two cracks identified in the structure, the first of these was successfully detected and located, whilst the other was missed due to high machine noise and unrepresentative loading.

Acoustic emission (AE) is the spontaneous release of energy caused by the growth of damage, the monitoring of which gives an indication of the presence of damage within a structure. The current standard for AE localisation is difficult to apply in a low‐power system as sensors must either be wired together or Node's time synchronised, which is power intensive. This paper proposes the use of a method of bonding three piezoelectric sensors in a small triangular array, which has previously been shown by Aljets et al. to be capable of locating sources in simple structures. In this prior work the wave's A0 mode was used to predict the angle of arrival and the distance the wave has travelled through single sensor modal analysis. This paper presents the development of hardware to apply this technique and testing that showed artificial sources could be located in simple plates to a good level of accuracy. The addition of complexity to structures significantly reduced accuracy. This prompted hardware modifications to use the S0 mode for angle prediction. Testing showed that this significantly improved performance in a complex composite structure. The power consumption of the device is very low, consuming 0.33 mW in sleep mode, 17.44 mW whilst waiting for an event and 38 mW to record, process and transmit an event. This level of consumption has the potential to be self‐powered via energy harvesting.

Given the very wide use of concrete within construction sectors, a huge amount of money has been spent to maintain and repair damage to infrastructure every year due to poor durability, construction methods, and quality control process of concrete structures. Then people started to investigate the “smart materials” that will adapt to their environment, including the self-healing concrete. In this study, totally four sets specimen (12 beams) has been tested and each whole testing process is divided into two parts. Acoustic Emission (AE) technique was applied to monitor the behaviour of self-healing concrete through whole testing process. The results have demonstrated that self-healing concrete based on vascular network is capable of restoring around 70% of the original concrete strength and bearing capacity. AE parameters can be effectively used to characterize the damage level of self-healing concrete. Experimental results also demonstrated that the use of Felicity effect could be promisingly applied to intuitively determine and evaluate the effectiveness of healing.

We investigated the depth, temperature, and molecular-weight (MW) dependence of the γ-relaxation in polystyrene glasses using implanted 8Li+ and β-detected nuclear magnetic resonance. Measurements were performed on thin films with MW ranging from 1.1 to 641 kg/mol. The temperature dependence of the average 8Li spin–lattice relaxation time [Formula: see text] was measured near the free surface and in the bulk. Spin–lattice relaxation is caused by phenyl ring flips, which involve transitions between local minima over free-energy barriers with enthalpic and entropic contributions. We used transition state theory to model the temperature dependence of the γ-relaxation, and hence [Formula: see text]. There is no clear correlation of the average entropy of activation [Formula: see text] and enthalpy of activation [Formula: see text] with MW, but there is a clear correlation between [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], i.e., entropy–enthalpy compensation. This results in the average Gibbs energy of activation, [Formula: see text], being approximately independent of MW. Measurements of the temperature dependence of [Formula: see text] as a function of depth below the free surface indicate the inherent entropic barrier, i.e., the entropy of activation corresponding to [Formula: see text] = 0, has an exponential dependence on the distance from the free surface before reaching the bulk value. This results in [Formula: see text] near the free surface being lower than the bulk. Combining these observations results in a model where the average fluctuation rate of the γ-relaxation has a “double-exponential” depth dependence. This model can explain the depth dependence of [Formula: see text] in polystyrene films. The characteristic length of enhanced dynamics is ∼6 nm and approximately independent of MW near room temperature.

Substance use identity has been consistently associated with problematic substance use. Limited attention has considered mechanisms of this association. This research examined whether greater identification as a drinker or marijuana user would be associated with the use of fewer alcohol/marijuana protective behavioral strategies (PBS; e.g., avoiding drinking games/avoiding using marijuana in public places). Further, PBS have been associated with lower levels of negative alcohol/marijuana-related outcomes (i.e., frequency, quantity, consequences). In the current multi-sample study, PBS were examined as a mediator of the relationship between drinking/marijuana identity and alcohol/marijuana-related outcomes across three studies. Study 1 was an intervention study with heavy drinking college students (N = 605), Study 2 was a multisite study of marijuana outcomes among college students (N = 2,077), and Study 3 was a study of substance use in a community sample (n = 369alcohol; n = 146marijuana). Cross-sectional and/or longitudinal data were collected across studies. Substance use identity, PBS, and use-related outcomes were measured across the three studies. Indirect effects were evaluated by Monte Carlo confidence intervals. Manner of Drinking PBS were found to be the only statistically significant mediator of the relationship between drinking identity and alcohol-related outcomes (i.e., quantity and consequences) cross-sectionally. These significant cross-sectional mediation effects for alcohol were replicated in one of three longitudinal models. Marijuana PBS were also found to mediate the relationship between marijuana identity and all marijuana-related outcomes examined in the current study. Study findings may help to inform the development of identity-based and PBS-based interventions that aim to reduce negative alcohol/marijuana-related outcomes.

Alcohol protective behavioral strategies (PBS) are cognitive-behavioral strategies used before, during, and/or after drinking to reduce alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. Self-determination theory (SDT) provides a potentially useful framework to understand motivations for responsible drinking, which is operationalized in the present study as PBS use. In the present study, we examined the relation of motivations for responsible drinking, as assessed by the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ), with other SDT constructs (psychological need satisfaction and dispositional autonomy) and PBS use. A sample of 507 college students who reported consuming alcohol at least once in the past 3 months were recruited from a random sample of students enrolled at a Hispanic serving institution to complete an online survey. Consistent with SDT and previous studies of the TSRQ, we found support for a 4-factor structure of the TSRQ. The TSRQ demonstrated measurement invariance across several sociodemographic subgroups within the sample (e.g., biological sex, age, year in school), supporting the use of the TSRQ across these subgroups. Further, consistent with SDT-based hypotheses, greater psychological need satisfaction and dispositional autonomy were related to more self-determined motivations for responsible drinking. Also consistent with SDT, more self-determined motivations for responsible drinking were related to more frequent PBS use. The present findings further support the utility of the TSRQ for assessing motivations for responsible drinking and support SDT as a framework for understanding responsible drinking. The purpose of the present study was to examine interaction effects between alcohol protective behavioral strategies (PBS) and a variety of risk and protective factors for experiencing negative alcohol-related consequences using data from a large, multi-site sample of college students. We recruited 5090 college students (71.2% female; 77.4% White; Mean Age = 20.89, SD = 4.44) who reported any alcohol use in the past month from psychology department participant pools at 10 universities across the U.S. to complete an online survey. Alcohol PBS use was a statistically significant negative predictor of alcohol-related problems while controlling for each antecedent variable individually. In terms of moderation effects, 26 out of 35 interactions (74.3%) were statistically significant in the models controlling only for sex. When controlling for frequency and quantity of alcohol use, 24 of 33 interactions (72.7%) were statistically significant. The nature of these interaction effects was largely the same: more frequent alcohol PBS use reduced the positive associations between risk factors and alcohol-related problems. The lack of specificity of these interaction effects calls into question the limited contributions of tests of interaction effects between alcohol PBS and individual antecedent variables. Comprehensive tests of interaction effects between alcohol PBS and antecedent variables with large samples are needed to move the field forward, especially replication attempts of interactions effects reported in single studies.

Energy harvesting, based on sources including vibration and thermal gradients, has been exploited in recent years to power telemetry, small devices, or to charge batteries or capacitors. Generating the higher levels of power which have thus far been required to run sensor systems such as those needed for structural health monitoring has been more challenging. In addition, harvesters such as those required to capture vibration often require additional elements (e.g. cantilevers) to be added to the structure and harvest over a relatively narrow band of frequencies. In aerospace applications, where weight is at a premium and vibrations occur over a broader range of frequencies, this is non-ideal. With the advent of new, lower power monitoring systems, the potential for energy harvesting to be utilized is significantly increased. This article optimizes the placement of a set of parasitic piezoelectric patches to harvest over the broad band of frequencies found in an aircraft wing and validates the results experimentally. Results are compared with the requirements of a low-power structural health monitoring system, with a closing of the gap between the energy generated and that required being demonstrated.

The present study sought to identify motivational profiles for responsible drinking from a self-determination theory (SDT) perspective among college students. We used data from 507 students who reported drinking alcohol at least once in the past 3 months that were recruited from a random sample of undergraduate students at a Southwestern university. Participants completed an online survey that included measures assessing amotivation, external regulation, introjected regulation, and autonomous motivation for responsible drinking as well as other SDT constructs, alcohol protective behavioral strategies (PBS), and alcohol use/problems. A latent profile analysis suggested that a 3-class solution was optimal: a “High Quality” class (i.e., relatively high on introjected regulation and autonomous motivation but relatively low on all other types of motivation), a “High Quantity” class (i.e., relatively high on all types of motivation), and a “Low Quantity” class (i.e., relatively low on all types of motivation). The High Quality class reported the highest level of psychological need satisfaction and dispositional autonomy, followed by the High Quantity class, with the Low Quantity class reporting the lowest levels. The High Quality class reported more frequent use of serious harm reduction PBS than the High Quantity class. Generally, both the High Quality and High Quantity classes reported more frequent use of all types of PBS and less alcohol use/problems than the Low Quantity class. These results provide initial support for different profiles of motivations based on SDT for responsible drinking. Potential implications for alcohol interventions among college students are discussed.

Pregnant women with substance use disorder (SUD) comprise an underserved population with complex treatment needs, including complications from trauma histories and comorbid psychological disorders. Using ecological momentary assessment, we examined momentary fluctuations in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, prenatal bonding, and substance craving, among pregnant women in SUD treatment who had a history of trauma. We hypothesized that (a) PTSD symptoms and prenatal bonding would each be associated with substance craving and (b) PTSD symptoms would be negatively associated with prenatal bonding, and this would at least partially account for the association between PTSD symptoms and substance craving (i.e., indirect effect). Participants (n = 32) were on average 27.1 weeks pregnant (SD = 5.27), 27.8 years old (SD = 4.54), and predominantly Hispanic/Latina (66%). At the within subjects level, higher momentary ratings of PTSD symptoms were associated with lower quality (but not intensity of preoccupation) of prenatal bonding, which in turn was associated with greater craving. Lower quality of prenatal bonding partially mediated the positive association between PTSD symptoms and craving, which remained strong after accounting for prenatal bonding. Our results provide some preliminary support for considering interventions aimed at stabilizing or decreasing PTSD symptoms and stabilizing or increasing prenatal bonding to reduce substance craving and, thus, the risk of perinatal substance use among women with SUD and trauma histories.
