ObjectiveTo estimate the dose–response associations between non-occupational physical activity and several chronic disease and mortality outcomes in the general adult population.DesignSystematic review and cohort-level dose-response meta-analysis.Data sourcesPubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and reference lists of published studies.Eligibility criteriaProspective cohort studies with (1) general population samples >10 000 adults, (2) ≥3 physical activity categories, and (3) risk measures and CIs for all-cause mortality or incident total cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, total cancer and site-specific cancers (head and neck, myeloid leukaemia, myeloma, gastric cardia, lung, liver, endometrium, colon, breast, bladder, rectum, oesophagus, prostate, kidney).Results196 articles were included, covering 94 cohorts with >30 million participants. The evidence base was largest for all-cause mortality (50 separate results; 163 415 543 person-years, 811 616 events), and incidence of cardiovascular disease (37 results; 28 884 209 person-years, 74 757 events) and cancer (31 results; 35 500 867 person-years, 185 870 events). In general, higher activity levels were associated with lower risk of all outcomes. Differences in risk were greater between 0 and 8.75 marginal metabolic equivalent of task-hours per week (mMET-hours/week) (equivalent to the recommended 150 min/week of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic physical activity), with smaller marginal differences in risk above this level to 17.5 mMET-hours/week, beyond which additional differences were small and uncertain. Associations were stronger for all-cause (relative risk (RR) at 8.75 mMET-hours/week: 0.69, 95% CI 0.65 to 0.73) and cardiovascular disease (RR at 8.75 mMET-hours/week: 0.71, 95% CI 0.66 to 0.77) mortality than for cancer mortality (RR at 8.75 mMET-hours/week: 0.85, 95% CI 0.81 to 0.89). If all insufficiently active individuals had achieved 8.75 mMET-hours/week, 15.7% (95% CI 13.1 to 18.2) of all premature deaths would have been averted.ConclusionsInverse non-linear dose–response associations suggest substantial protection against a range of chronic disease outcomes from small increases in non-occupational physical activity in inactive adults.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42018095481.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is often mooted as a promising and sustainable processing methodology for conversion of biomass into usable products, including bio-oils, which have the potential to alleviate humanitys reliance on fossil fuels. To date, the majority of HTL development work with novel biomasses has been undertaken at laboratory scale in batch processes and the results extrapolated to theoretical continuous flow processes required for industrial uptake. Here, we assess the use of a novel continuous flow HTL system, applying it to Sargassum (seaweed) material and generating a bio-oil which is assessed against typical crude oil fractions.

Background: The consumption of legumes is promoted as part of a healthy diet in many countries but associations of total and types of legume consumption with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are not well established. Analyses across diverse populations are lacking despite the availability of unpublished legume consumption data in prospective cohort studies. Objective: To examine the prospective associations of total and types of legume intake with the risk of incident T2D. Methods: Meta-analyses of associations between total legume, pulse, and soy consumption and T2D were conducted using a federated approach without physical data-pooling. Prospective cohorts were included if legume exposure and T2D outcome data were available and the cohort investigators agreed to participate. We estimated incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and CIs of associations using individual participant data including ≤42,473 incident cases among 807,785 adults without diabetes in 27 cohorts across the Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, and Western Pacific. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to combine effect estimates and estimate heterogeneity. Results: Median total legume intake ranged from 0-140 g/d across cohorts. We observed a weak positive association between total legume consumption and T2D (IRR = 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.04) per 20 g/d higher intake, with moderately high heterogeneity (I2 = 74%). Analysis by region showed no evidence of associations in the Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, and Western Pacific. The positive association in Europe (IRR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.10, I2 = 82%) was mainly driven by studies from Germany, UK, and Sweden. No evidence of associations was observed for the consumption of pulses or soy. Conclusions: These findings suggest no evidence of an association of legume intakes with T2D in several world regions. The positive association observed in some European studies warrants further investigation relating to overall dietary contexts in which legumes are consumed, including accompanying foods which may be positively associated with T2D. Importance Depression is the leading cause of mental health–related disease burden and may be reduced by physical activity, but the dose-response relationship between activity and depression is uncertain.Objective To systematically review and meta-analyze the dose-response association between physical activity and incident depression from published prospective studies of adults.Data Sources PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and the reference lists of systematic reviews retrieved by a systematic search up to December 11, 2020, with no language limits. The date of the search was November 12, 2020.Study Selection We included prospective cohort studies reporting physical activity at 3 or more exposure levels and risk estimates for depression with 3000 or more adults and 3 years or longer of follow-up.Data Extraction and Synthesis Data extraction was completed independently by 2 extractors and cross-checked for errors. A 2-stage random-effects dose-response meta-analysis was used to synthesize data. Study-specific associations were estimated using generalized least-squares regression and the pooled association was estimated by combining the study-specific coefficients using restricted maximum likelihood.Main Outcomes and Measures The outcome of interest was depression, including (1) presence of major depressive disorder indicated by self-report of physician diagnosis, registry data, or diagnostic interviews and (2) elevated depressive symptoms established using validated cutoffs for a depressive screening instrument.Results Fifteen studies comprising 191 130 participants and 2 110 588 person-years were included. An inverse curvilinear dose-response association between physical activity and depression was observed, with steeper association gradients at lower activity volumes; heterogeneity was large and significant (I2 = 74%; P Conclusions and Relevance This systematic review and meta-analysis of associations between physical activity and depression suggests significant mental health benefits from being physically active, even at levels below the public health recommendations. Health practitioners should therefore encourage any increase in physical activity to improve mental health.

Our climate is changing due to anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases from the production and use of fossil fuels. Present atmospheric levels of CO2 were last seen 3 million years ago, when planetary temperature sustained high Arctic camels. As scientists and educators, we should feel a professional responsibility to discuss major scientific issues like climate change, and its profound consequences for humanity, with students who look up to us for knowledge and leadership, and who will be most affected in the future. We offer simple to complex backgrounds and examples to enable and encourage biochemistry educators to routinely incorporate this most important topic into their classrooms.

Use of wearable devices that monitor physical activity is projected to increase more than fivefold per half-decade1. We investigated how device-based physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and different intensity profiles were associated with all-cause mortality. We used a network harmonization approach to map dominant-wrist acceleration to PAEE in 96,476 UK Biobank participants (mean age 62 years, 56% female). We also calculated the fraction of PAEE accumulated from moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA). Over the median 3.1-year follow-up period (302,526 person-years), 732 deaths were recorded. Higher PAEE was associated with a lower hazard of all-cause mortality for a constant fraction of MVPA (for example, 21% (95% confidence interval 4–35%) lower hazard for 20 versus 15 kJ kg−1 d−1 PAEE with 10% from MVPA). Similarly, a higher MVPA fraction was associated with a lower hazard when PAEE remained constant (for example, 30% (8–47%) lower hazard when 20% versus 10% of a fixed 15 kJ kg−1 d−1 PAEE volume was from MVPA). Our results show that higher volumes of PAEE are associated with reduced mortality rates, and achieving the same volume through higher-intensity activity is associated with greater reductions than through lower-intensity activity. The linkage of device-measured activity to energy expenditure creates a framework for using wearables for personalized prevention. Analysis of UK Biobank participants with wearable physical activity monitors demonstrates that high-volume physical activity and high-intensity activity are associated with reduced mortality.

Harmonization of data for pooled analysis relies on the principle of inferential equivalence between variables from different sources. Ideally, this is achieved using models of the direct relationship with gold standard criterion measures, but the necessary validation study data are often unavailable. This study examines an alternative method of network harmonization using indirect models. Starting methods were self-report or accelerometry, from which we derived indirect models of relationships with doubly labelled water (DLW)-based physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) using sets of two bridge equations via one of three intermediate measures. Coefficients and performance of indirect models were compared to corresponding direct models (linear regression of DLW-based PAEE on starting methods). Indirect model beta coefficients were attenuated compared to direct model betas (10%–63%), narrowing the range of PAEE values; attenuation was greater when bridge equations were weak. Directly and indirectly harmonized models had similar error variance but most indirectly derived values were biased at group-level. Correlations with DLW-based PAEE were identical after harmonization using continuous linear but not categorical models. Wrist acceleration harmonized to DLW-based PAEE via combined accelerometry and heart rate sensing had the lowest error variance (24.5%) and non-significant mean bias 0.9 (95%CI: −1.6; 3.4) kJ·day−1·kg−1. Associations between PAEE and BMI were similar for directly and indirectly harmonized values, but most fell outside the confidence interval of the criterion PAEE-to-BMI association. Indirect models can be used for harmonization. Performance depends on the measurement properties of original data, variance explained by available bridge equations, and similarity of population characteristics.

There is a lack of data on physical activity (PA), active travel, and the comparison of measurement instruments in low-resource settings. The objective of this paper is to describe PA behaviour and the agreement of walking estimates from the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) and the travel diary in a low-resource setting. We used a cross-sectional survey design to capture data from the residents of Accra (Ghana) between May 2020 and March 2021. Of the 863 participants aged 15+ years, 65% were females, and 86% reported PA. The median weekly PA was 18 (interquartile range: 5-75) metabolic equivalent of task hours, with 50% of females and 37% of males achieving low PA levels. In the GPAQ, 80% of participants reported weekly walking; the mean number of days walked was 3.8 (standard deviation (SD): 2.5); hence, 54% of participants reported walking on any day, and the mean daily walking duration was 51 (SD: 82) minutes. In the diary, 56% of participants reported walking for over 24 h, with a mean walking duration of 31 (SD: 65) minutes. The correlation of walking duration between instruments was weak (rho: 0.31; 95% Confidence Interval: 0.25-0.37); the mean bias was 20 min, with GPAQ estimates being 0.1 to 9 times higher than diary estimates. We concluded that low PA is prevalent in Accra, and while the travel diary and GPAQ estimate similar walking prevalence, their walking duration agreement is poor. The current minimum recommendations for physical activity (150 min/week of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity) equate to 8.75 mMET-h/week. Outcomes were risks of mortality, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers. We used restricted cubic splines in random-effects meta-analyses. Potential population impact was quantified using impact fractions.Results196 articles were included, covering 94 cohorts. The evidence base was largest for all-cause mortality (50 independent results; 163,415,543 person-years; 811,616 events), and incidence of cardiovascular disease (37 independent results; 28,884,209 person-years; 74,757 events) and cancer (31 independent results; 35,500,867 person-years; 185,870 events). The triple burden of malnutrition in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is partly a result of changing food environments and a shift from traditional diets to high-calorie Western-style diets. Exploring the relationship between food sources and food- and nutrition-related outcomes is important to understanding how changes in food environments may affect nutrition in LMICs. This study examined associations of household food source with household food insecurity, individual dietary diversity and individual body mass index in Western Kenya. Interview-administered questionnaire and anthropometric data from 493 adults living in 376 randomly-selected households were collected in 2019. Adjusted regression analyses were used to assess the association of food source with measures of food insecurity, dietary diversity and body mass index. Notably, participants that reported rearing domesticated animals for consumption (‘own livestock’) had lower odds of moderate or severe household food insecurity (odds ratio (OR) = 0.29 (95% CI: 0.09, 0.96)) and those that reported buying food from supermarkets had lower odds of moderate or severe household food insecurity (borderline significant, OR = 0.37 (95% CI: 0.14, 1.00)), increased dietary diversity scores (Poisson coefficient = 0.17 (95% CI: 0.10, 0.24)) and higher odds of achieving minimum dietary diversity (OR = 2.84 (95% CI: 1.79, 4.49)). Our findings provide insight into the relationship between food environments, dietary patterns and nutrition in Kenya, and suggest that interventions that influence household food source may impact the malnutrition burden in this context.

Remediation of water from tailings is a critical and challenging issue in many industries, particularly in oil sand refineries and waste water treatment. Mining of the Canadian oil sands, also one of the largest known crude petroleum reserve in the world, is done to extract bitumen by the processes like hot water extraction, resulting in numerous amounts of tailings (large ponds). Techniques that can achieve contaminant separation over large surface areas/volumes, with low energy input, and at a low economic investment are of primary interest. Hence, such techniques can be applied for the manufacturing industries with the similar concerns. In this paper, a di-electric heating method is presented that combines electrical standing wave voltage amplification with porous interface (carbon foam) materials to intensify water evaporation. The system targets the di-electric loss tangent of the aqueous solution accompanied with porous interface by operating at a high voltage and frequency in the low megahertz (1–5 MHz). The non-uniform charge distributions across the interface material enables distributed heat localization at the air-water/material boundary, therefore avoiding bulk heating. The most important parameters determining efficiency of capacitive heating are determining the resonant frequency of material in contact with the heating end of helix, and properties of the interface material. Different porous configurations treated for the application were applied as interface layers and the experimental results demonstrate an 80% increase in evaporation rates compared to solar and natural heating. The combination of electrical heating with reduced heat losses results in accelerated vapor generation. Hence, results showcase heat localization at the interface, electric field at the heating boundary and energy requirements for the mentioned scenario. The proposed method offers a promising solution to localize heat over a large area by application of low-cost porous materials and high voltage/high frequency electrical resonators for use in water treatment, remediation, and go further with distillation applications for water reclamation.

Single Contact Wireless Capacitive Power Transfer (CPT) is an emerging technology that offers many useful advantages including high transfer efficiency, enhanced misalignment tolerance, and low fabrication costs. Most contemporary CPT methods rely only on a transmitter/receiver geometry in an attempt to mitigate the stray fields. To reduce the leakage electric flux within a CPT environment, a new technique is presented in this paper that relies on standing wave field patterns to intensify the coupling between the transmitter/receiver, while simultaneously suppressing the leakage flux in the adjacent space around the system.

Patient complaints are directly related to patient experience and safety. While complaints have the potential to be a major driving force in quality improvement, there is little evidence-based structure to use as a guide. The existing literature draws attention to the significant variability in complaint reporting and analysis systems as major barriers. Furthermore, weak change strategies are frequently implemented in response to complaints. This often prevents further investigation into larger systems issues that could be addressed with quality improvement initiatives. Several recent studies describe success with the use of a standardized tool to classify patient complaints, which highlights attempts at overcoming these barriers. There are opportunities to more effectively use patient complaints to drive improvement including a cultural shift with supportive leadership, transparency with the complaint process, and the use of a standardized tool to better organize and process complaints.

ObjectivesTo investigate associations between occupational physical activity (OPA) and all-cause mortality.MethodsFrom baseline (2006-2010), 452,884 UK Biobank participants (aged 40-69 years) were followed for a median 11.1 (IQR: 10.4-11.8) years. OPA was categorised by cross-tabulating degree of manual work and walking/standing work amongst those in paid employment (n=264,424), whereas categories of occupational status were used for those not in paid employment (n=188,460). Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for all-cause mortality by occupational category, and for working hours/week and non-occupational physical activity stratified by occupational category.ResultsDuring 4,965,616 person-years of follow-up, 23,310 deaths occurred. Compared to those in sedentary jobs, retirement was associated with lower mortality in women (HR=0.74, CI:0.68-0.81) and men (HR=0.85, CI:0.79-0.92), whereas unemployment was associated with higher mortality in men (HR=1.26, CI:1.10-1.45). There was no evidence of mortality differences by OPA category within the working population. Working ConclusionWork classified as having higher levels of OPA may not be as active as reported, or the types of physical activity performed in those jobs are not health-enhancing. Irrespective of OPA category or employment status, non-occupational physical activity appears to provide health benefits.SUMMARY BOXWhat are the new findings?Retirement was associated with lower all-cause mortality, compared to having a sedentary job in both men and women but unemployment was only associated with higher mortality in men.There were no differences in mortality between categories with different levels of self-reported OPAPhysical activity outside of work was associated with lower hazard of all-cause mortality and there was no interaction with occupational physical activity, indicating similar benefits across different jobs types.How might it impact on clinical practice in the future?Health professionals should be aware that occupations assumed to involve more physical activity may not be as active as reported, or the types of physical activity performed in those jobs may not be health-enhancing.Physical activity during leisure-time should continue to be recommended to adults of all paid and unpaid occupational categories.

Background UK Biobank is a large prospective cohort study containing accelerometer-based physical activity data with strong validity collected from 100,000 participants approximately 5 years after baseline. In contrast, the main cohort has multiple self-reported physical behaviours from > 500,000 participants with longer follow-up time, offering several epidemiological advantages. However, questionnaire methods typically suffer from greater measurement error, and at present there is no tested method for combining these diverse self-reported data to more comprehensively assess the overall dose of physical activity. This study aimed to use the accelerometry sub-cohort to calibrate the self-reported behavioural variables to produce a harmonised estimate of physical activity energy expenditure, and subsequently examine its reliability, validity, and associations with disease outcomes. Methods We calibrated 14 self-reported behavioural variables from the UK Biobank main cohort using the wrist accelerometry sub-cohort (n = 93,425), and used published equations to estimate physical activity energy expenditure (PAEESR). For comparison, we estimated physical activity based on the scoring criteria of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and by summing variables for occupational and leisure-time physical activity with no calibration. Test-retest reliability was assessed using data from the UK Biobank repeat assessment (n = 18,905) collected a mean of 4.3 years after baseline. Validity was assessed in an independent validation study (n = 98) with estimates based on doubly labelled water (PAEEDLW). In the main UK Biobank cohort (n = 374,352), Cox regression was used to estimate associations between PAEESR and fatal and non-fatal outcomes including all-cause, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and cancers. Results PAEESR explained 27% variance in gold-standard PAEEDLW estimates, with no mean bias. However, error was strongly correlated with PAEEDLW (r = −.98; p SR had narrower range than the criterion. Test-retest reliability (Λ = .67) and relative validity (Spearman = .52) of PAEESR outperformed two common approaches for processing self-report data with no calibration. Predictive validity was demonstrated by associations with morbidity and mortality, e.g. 14% (95%CI: 11–17%) lower mortality for individuals meeting lower physical activity guidelines. Conclusions The PAEESR variable has good reliability and validity for ranking individuals, with no mean bias but correlated error at individual-level. PAEESR outperformed uncalibrated estimates and showed stronger inverse associations with disease outcomes.

ObjectiveA wide variety of methods are available to assess dietary intake, each one with different strengths and weaknesses. Researchers face multiple challenges when diet and nutrition need to be accurately assessed, particularly in the selection of the most appropriate dietary assessment method for their study. The goal of the current collaborative work is to present a collection of available resources for dietary assessment implementation.Design/Setting/ParticipantsAs a follow-up to the 9th International Conference on Diet and Physical Activity Methods held in 2015, developers of dietary assessment toolkits agreed to collaborate in the preparation of the present paper, which provides an overview of each toolkit. The toolkits presented include: the Diet, Anthropometry and Physical Activity Measurement Toolkit (DAPA; UK); the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Dietary Assessment Primer (USA); the Nutritools website (UK); the Australasian Child and Adolescent Obesity Research Network (ACAORN) method selector (Australia); and the Danone Dietary Assessment Toolkit (DanoneDAT; France). An at-a-glance summary of features and comparison of the toolkits is provided.ResultsThe present review contains general background on dietary assessment, along with a summary of each of the included toolkits, a feature comparison table and direct links to each toolkit, all of which are freely available online.ConclusionsThis overview of dietary assessment toolkits provides comprehensive information to aid users in the selection and implementation of the most appropriate dietary assessment method, or combination of methods, with the goal of collecting the highest-quality dietary data possible.

Background: The distribution of adolescent moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) across multiple contexts is unclear. This study examined indoor and outdoor leisure time in terms of being structured or unstructured and explored relationships with total daily MVPA. Methods: Between September 2012 and January 2014, 70 participants (aged 11–13 y) from 4 schools in Edinburgh wore an accelerometer and global positioning system receiver over 7 days, reporting structured physical activity using a diary. Time spent and MVPA were summarized according to indoor/outdoor location and whether activity was structured/unstructured. Independent associations between context-specific time spent and total daily MVPA were examined using a multivariate linear regression model. Results: Very little time or MVPA was recorded in structured contexts. Unstructured outdoor leisure time was associated with an increase in total daily MVPA almost twice that of unstructured indoor leisure time [b value (95% confidence interval), 8.45 (1.71 to 14.48) vs 4.38 (0.20 to 8.22) minute increase per hour spent]. The association was stronger for time spent in structured outdoor leisure time [35.81 (20.60 to 52.27)]. Conclusions: Research and interventions should focus on strategies to facilitate time outdoors during unstructured leisure time and maximize MVPA once youth are outdoors. Increasing the proportion of youth engaging in structured activity may be beneficial given that, although time spent was limited, association with MVPA was strongest.

Assessing the relationship between hydrocarbon groundwater concentrations and overlying vapour concentrations is fraught with uncertainties resulting from effects of moisture and biodegradation in the capillary fringe above the water table, the combined effects of solubility and Raoult9s law associated with free phase hydrocarbon and, not least, the subsequent potential vapour transport mechanisms. This paper reports on a UK site containing an uninhabited house adjacent to soil and groundwater source zones. Hydrocarbon concentrations within shallow groundwater, soil, soil vapour and indoor air have been measured over several sampling events. Potential for biodegradation has been assessed using biotraps. Recent publications and this site9s data suggest that models are conservative and may overestimate potential indoor air concentrations. Attenuation from the subsurface into the house may be less than predicted if preferential pathways exist, but preferential pathways limit modelling applicability. As always, a robust and full understanding of the conceptual model is critical. At this site, and most real-world sites, this understanding is often prohibitively expensive to obtain. Notwithstanding this caveat, the results at this site suggest that both modelling algorithms and source-separation distance approaches are valid screening tools in the UK provided that a robust understanding of the conceptual model is developed.

The phase diagram of the filled skutterudite CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ has been mapped in fields $H$ of up to 60 T and temperatures $T$ down to 0.5 K using resistivity, magnetostriction, and MHz conductivity. The valence transition separating the semimetallic, low-$H$, low-$T$, $\cal{L}$ phase from the metallic high-$H$, high-$T$ $\cal{H}$ phase exhibits a very unusual, wedge-shaped phase boundary, with a non-monotonic gradient alternating between positive and negative. This is quite different from the text-book "elliptical" phase boundary usually followed by valence transitions. Analysis of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations within the $\cal{H}$ phase reveals an effective mass that increases as $H$ drops toward the $\cal{H-L}$ phase boundary, suggesting proximity to a quantum-critical point. The associated magnetic fluctuations may be responsible for the anomalous $H,T$ dependence of the valence transition at high $H$, whereas the low$-H$, high$-T$ portion of the phase boundary may rather be associated with the proximity of CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ to a topological semimetal phase induced by uniaxial stress., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures and Supplementary Information of 4 pages, 2 figures

Use of wearable devices that monitor physical activity is projected to increase more than fivefold per half-decade

Although low-dimensional S = 1 antiferromagnets remain of great interest, difficulty in obtaining high-quality single crystals of the newest materials hinders experimental research in this area. Polycrystalline samples are more readily produced, but there are inherent problems in extracting the magnetic properties of anisotropic systems from powder data. Following a discussion of the effect of powder-averaging on various measurement techniques, we present a methodology to overcome this issue using thermodynamic measurements. In particular we focus on whether it is possible to characterise the magnetic properties of polycrystalline, anisotropic samples using readily available laboratory equipment. We test the efficacy of our method using the magnets [Ni(H2O)2(3,5-lutidine)4](BF4)2 and Ni(H2O)2(acetate)2(4-picoline)2, which have negligible exchange interactions, as well as the antiferromagnet [Ni(H2O)2(pyrazine)2](BF4)2, and show that we are able to extract the anisotropy parameters in each case. The results obtained from the thermodynamic measurements are checked against electron-spin resonance and neutron diffraction. We also present a density functional method, which incorporates spin–orbit coupling to estimate the size of the anisotropy in [Ni(H2O)2(pyrazine)2](BF4)2.

Background The evidence for the prospective relationships between specific physical activities (PA), sedentary behaviours (SB) and sleep on subsequent total PA levels is scarce. The purpose of this study was to examine prospective associations of self-reported PA, SB and sleep, and changes in these with subsequent accelerometer-measured PA. Methods A sub-sample of 91,648 UK Biobank participants reported moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), lifestyle activities, TV viewing, computer use and sleep through screen-based questionnaires at baseline (2006–2010), and provided valid accelerometry data (dominant wrist-worn for 7 days between 2013 and 2015). A further sub-sample of 7709 participants repeated the screen-based questionnaires between 2012 and 2013. Results In both women (n = 51,545) and men (n = 40,103), positive associations were observed between all self-reported measures of PA at baseline (MVPA, lifestyle/job-related activities, active transporting modes) and accelerometer-measured PA levels at follow-up (median 5.7 years); an exception was ‘walking/standing at work’ in women. Sedentary time at work, TV viewing and computer use were inversely associated with PA at follow-up. Sleeping either more or less than 7 h/day at baseline was associated with lower PA at follow-up (except for ≤6 h/day in men). In the repeat self-report sub-sample (median 4.3 years), relatively higher physical activity at follow-up was observed in those who maintained or achieved favourable levels of MVPA, walking for pleasure, strenuous sports, other exercises, heavy DIY (in women), heavy physical work, and walking/standing at work (in women), sedentary time at work, getting about methods (in women), commuting methods (in women), TV viewing, computer use or sleep. Conclusions Initial levels of PA, SB and sleep, and changes in these variables were generally associated with subsequent accelerometer-measured PA in the expected directions, suggesting these specific behaviours all contribute to the total volume of physical activity over time and could thus be targets for intervention. The association between fish consumption and new-onset type 2 diabetes is inconsistent and differs according to geographical location. We examined the association between the total and types of fish consumption and type 2 diabetes using individual participant data from 28 prospective cohort studies from the Americas (6), Europe (15), the Western Pacific (6), and the Eastern Mediterranean (1) comprising 956,122 participants and 48,084 cases of incident type 2 diabetes. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) for associations of total fish, shellfish, fatty, lean, fried, freshwater, and saltwater fish intake and type 2 diabetes were derived for each study, adjusting for a consistent set of confounders and combined across studies using random-effects meta-analysis. We stratified all analyses by sex due to observed interaction (p = 0.002) on the association between fish and type 2 diabetes. In women, for each 100 g/week higher intake the IRRs (95% CIs) of type 2 diabetes were 1.02 (1.01-1.03, I2 = 61%) for total fish, 1.04 (1.01-1.07, I2 = 46%) for fatty fish, and 1.02 (1.00-1.04, I2 = 33%) for lean fish. In men, all associations were null. In women, we observed variation by geographical location: IRRs for total fish were 1.03 (1.02-1.04, I2 = 0%) in the Americas and null in other regions. In conclusion, we found evidence of a neutral association between total fish intake and type 2 diabetes in men, but there was a modest positive association among women with heterogeneity across studies, which was partly explained by geographical location and types of fish intake. Future research should investigate the role of cooking methods, accompanying foods and environmental pollutants, but meanwhile, existing dietary regional, national, or international guidelines should continue to guide fish consumption within overall healthy dietary patterns.

Integration of Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) of microalgae biomass with concentrated solar power thermal processing (CSP) for bio-oil production is a potential processing pathway for energy efficient generation of renewable biofuels. Solar HTL infrastructure avoids additional bolt-on components of conventional solar parabolic trough systems used for electricity production including heat transfer fluids, counter current heat exchangers, fluid transfer interconnectivity and electrical power control systems. The absence of such capital intensive additional equipment considerably reduces the production costs of solar HTL biofuels compared to electricity generation from conventional CSP power systems. An economic and market appraisal of variance and system economic resilience is presented. It is hypothesised that the combination of nutrient recycling with HTL/CSP unification has the potential for economically sustainable microalgae bio-oil production. A microalgae biofuel minimum fuel sales price of $1.23/kg has been modelled. Further experimental work would be able to validate this integrated model.

Harmonisation of data for pooled analysis relies on the principle of inferential equivalence between variables from different sources. Ideally, this is achieved using models of the direct relationship with gold standard criterion measures, but the necessary validation data are often unavailable. This study examines an alternative method of harmonisation by indirect validation. Starting methods were self-report or accelerometry, from which we derived indirect models of relationships with doubly labelled water (DLW)-measured physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) using sets of two bridge equations via one of three intermediate measures. Coefficients and performance of indirect models were compared to corresponding direct validation models (linear regression of DLW-measured PAEE on starting methods). Indirect model beta coefficients were attenuated compared to direct model betas (10-63%), narrowing the range of PAEE values; attenuation was greater when bridge equations were weak. Directly and indirectly harmonised models had similar error variance but most indirectly derived values were biased at group-level. Correlations with DLW-measured PAEE were identical after harmonisation using continuous linear but not categorical models. Wrist acceleration harmonised to DLW-measured PAEE via combined accelerometry and heart rate sensing had lowest error variance (24.5%) and non-significant mean bias 0.9 (95%CI: −1.6; 3.4) kJ•day−1•kg−1. Associations between PAEE and BMI were similar for directly and indirectly harmonised values, but most fell outside the confidence interval of the criterion PAEE-to-BMI association. Indirect models can be used for harmonisation. Performance depends on the measurement properties of original data, variance explained by available bridge equations, and similarity of population characteristics.

NbRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$ crystallises in a chiral noncentrosymmetric structure and exhibits bulk type-II superconductivity below $7.46(5)$~K. Here we show that the temperature dependence of the upper critical field deviates from the behaviour expected for both Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg and the Ginzburg-Landau models and that $\mu_{0}H_{\mathrm{c2}}\left(0\right)\approx 18$~T exceeds the Pauli paramagnetic limit, $\mu_{0}H_{\mathrm{P}}=13.9$~T. We explore the reasons for this enhancement. Transverse-field muon spectroscopy measurements suggest that the superconducting gap is either $s$-wave or $\left(s+s\right)$-wave, and the pressure dependence of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ reveals the superconducting gap is primarily $s$-wave in character. The magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(0) = 595(5)$~nm. Heat capacity measurements reveal the presence of a multigap $\left(s+s\right)$-wave superconducting order parameter and moderate electron-phonon coupling., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Reducing production costs of thermo-conversion of waste to fuel technologies depends upon an integrated approach to heat utilisation, nutrient recycling and complete by-product valorisation. Hydrothermal liquefaction is a proven laboratory technology with much recent research interest, though yet to be widely deployed as a commercial technology for third generation biofuels. Notwithstanding increased applied research efforts into hydrothermal liquefaction, energy inputs into waste to fuel formulation remain high, and originate from non-renewable heat sources. The technical approach presented is the field testing of an integrated set-up of concentrated solar power and hydrothermal liquefaction system and bio-crude output compositional analysis. Concentrated solar power is integrated with hydrothermal liquefaction technologies into the conversion process to improve the energy efficiency and the economic case for scaling waste to bio-crude production. This paper presents the hydrothermal liquefaction bio-oil formation and product analysis at a pre-pilot field scale. Waste valorisation and commercial strategy is discussed with reference to post-reactant hydrothermal liquefaction outputs on experimental work carried out in India.

Purpose This study aimed to apply open-source analysis code to raw habitual physical activity data from wrist-worn monitors to: 1) objectively, unobtrusively, and accurately discriminate between “running” and “nonrunning” days; and 2) develop and compare simple accelerometer-derived metrics of external training load with existing self-report measures. Methods Seven-day wrist-worn accelerometer (GENEActiv; Activinsights Ltd, Kimbolton, UK) data obtained from 35 experienced runners (age, 41.9 ± 11.4 yr; height, 1.72 ± 0.08 m; mass, 68.5 ± 9.7 kg; body mass index, 23.2 ± 2.2 kg·m−2; 19 [54%] women) every other week over 9 to 18 wk were date-matched with self-reported training log data. Receiver operating characteristic analyses were applied to accelerometer metrics (“Average Acceleration,” “Most Active-30mins,” “Mins≥400 mg”) to discriminate between “running” and “nonrunning” days and cross-validated (leave one out cross-validation). Variance explained in training log criterion metrics (miles, duration, training load) by accelerometer metrics (Mins≥400 mg, “workload (WL) 400-4000 mg”) was examined using linear regression with leave one out cross-validation. Results Most Active-30mins and Mins≥400 mg had >94% accuracy for correctly classifying “running” and “nonrunning” days, with validation indicating robustness. Variance explained in miles, duration, and training load by Mins≥400 mg (67%–76%) and WL400–4000 mg (55%–69%) was high, with validation indicating robustness. Conclusions Wrist-worn accelerometer metrics can be used to objectively, unobtrusively, and accurately identify running training days in runners, reducing the need for training logs or user input in future prospective research or commercial activity tracking. The high percentage of variance explained in existing self-reported measures of training load by simple, accelerometer-derived metrics of external training load supports the future use of accelerometry for prospective, preventative, and prescriptive monitoring purposes in runners.

We present calculations and experimental measurements of the temperature-dependent magnetization of a single crystal of GdCo$_5$ in magnetic fields of order 60 T. At zero temperature the calculations, based on density-functional theory in the disordered-local-moment picture, predict a field-induced transition from an antiferromagnetic to a canted alignment of Gd and Co moments at 46.1 T. At higher temperatures the calculations find this critical field to increase along with the zero-field magnetization. The experimental measurements observe this transition to occur between 44-48 T at 1.4 K. Up to temperatures of at least 100 K, the experiments continue to observe the transition; however, at variance with the calculations, no strong temperature dependence of the critical field is apparent. We assign this difference to the inaccurate description of the zero-field magnetization of the calculations at low temperatures, due to the use of classical statistical mechanics. Correcting for this effect, we recover a consistent description of the high-field magnetization of GdCo$_5$ from theory and experiment., 11 pages, 4 figures. Ionotropic gelation and density phase separation of high affinity salt ions and alginate gels have been investigated for the functional application of salt water desalination. Partial desalination has been demonstrated using ion chromatography, electron microscopy and electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Despite being only a partial process, these findings show a less complex energy expenditure process compared with conventional desalination by the utilisation of alginate as a complete replacement for filter technology and pumping. This research has identified how this desalination process functions at a range of salinities between full strength seawater and freshwater and is simultaneously able to recycle alginate as a potential replacement sustainable chemical vector to filtration technology.
