3. The Development and Validation of Science Virtual Test to Assess 7th Grade Students' Critical Thinking on Matter and Heat Topic

An efficient way to improve the quality of education in critical thinking is developing the better tests. The test has been shifted towards the use of computer-based procedures. Lack of specific topic of critical thinking tests in science and the advanced of technology made the researcher intended to develop and validate a test to measure students’ critical thinking in the matter and heat topic based on computer for seventh grade junior high school. Generally, the process of developing and validating the test consists of 5 steps: (1) content analysis; (2) constructing multiple choice items; (3) readability test and expert validation; (4) limited tryout; and (5) larger application. Based on larger application, it is obtained the reliability value, difficulty level, discriminating power and distractor quality. The method that used in this research was descriptive. The subject was 117 students of public Junior High School in Kabupaten Bandung. The instrument validation resulted 30 items that represent 8 elements and 21 sub-elements to measure students’ critical thinking based on Inch in matter and heat topic. The instrument is further called as Science Virtual Test Matter and Heat (SVT-MH). The alpha Cronbach (α) is 0.642 which means that the instrument is sufficient to measure students’ critical thinking matter and heat topic. The result also shows the profile of students in critical thinking is 73% categorized as ‘moderate’, while students respond the positive impression towards the use of SVT-MH. The purpose of this study is to develop a valid and reliable achievement test that consists of multiple-choice questions according to the Renewed Bloom Taxonomy to determine the level of achievement of 6th-grade students in the science course "Matter and Heat". Firstly, learning objectives that form the basis of Matter and Heat were determined. Then, literatüre was reviewed and the item pool consists of 40 multiple choice items was developed. The questions prepared to determine the appropriateness to the student level were read out by 5 students. A table of test specifications was prepared according to the Renewed Bloom Taxonomy and the test was validated by a group of experts to ensure content validity. 24 items were selected for the pilot implementation. The test was applied to 169 sixth grade students. Results of the item analysis; The discrimination of three items was found to be less than 0.20 and the difficulties less than 0.30. These 3 items were removed from the test and the achievement test was prepared with 21 items. The reliability is 0.78. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fen bilimleri dersi öğretim programının ve ünitelerde yer alan kazanımların yeniden düzenlenmesiyle birlikte uygun ölçme değerlendirme araçlarına ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Bu sebeple altıncı sınıf fen bilimleri dersi “Madde ve Isı” ünitesi kazanımlarına yönelik geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme değerlendirme aracı geliştirmektir. Ünitenin kazanımları 13 tane olduğu belirlenmiş ve ek yedi kazanım yazılmış ve her kazanıma yönelik iki madde yazılarak toplam 40 maddeden oluşan test hazırlanmıştır. Testin kapsam geçerliliğinin sağlanması için hazırlanan belirtke tablosu fen eğitimi alanında uzman olan kişilere ve konu alan uzmanlarına başvurulmuştur. Hazırlanan başarı testi 2019-2020 yılı güz döneminde Amasya İl’inde iki ortaokulda öğrenim görmekte olan toplam 350 yedinci sınıf öğrencisine uygulama yapılmıştır. Uygulama sonucunda ayırt edicilik ve güçlük değerleri bulunmuştur. Analiz sonucunda yedi maddenin ayırt edicilik değerleri düşük çıkmasından dolayı testten çıkarılmıştır. 33 maddeden oluşan başarı testinin madde güçlük ortalaması 0,501, ayırt edicilik ortalaması 0,530 ve Kuder Richardson-20 (KR-20) değeri 0,877 olarak bulunmuştur. Madde analizi incelendiğinde madde güçlüğü orta değerde, ayırt ediciliği yüksek ve güvenilir bir başarı testi geliştirilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmanın sonucunda 2018 fen bilimleri öğretim programındaki kazanımlara yönelik geliştirilen başarı testi öğrencilerin düzeylerine uygun şekilde ölçme değerlendirme aracı olarak kullanılabilmesi ve geliştirilen başarı testinde yer alan maddeler çoktan seçmeli olduğu için farklı ölçme değerlendirme soruları ilave edilerek testin uygulanabilmesi önerilebilir., With the revision of the science curriculum and the acquisitions/leaning outcomes in the units, appropriate measurement assessment tools are needed. For this reason, a valid and reliable measurement assessment should be developed for the sixth-grade science course about the "Matter and Heat" unit acquisitions. The unit's acquisitions were determined to be 13 and an additional seven acquisitions were written and two items for each acquisition were added and a total of 40 items were prepared. Content validity of the test was provided by the science education experts through examining of prepared specification table for the content of the test. The achievement test was applied to a total of 350 seventh grade students studying at two secondary schools in Amasya Province in the fall semester of 2019-2020. At the end of the application, the values of distinguishability and difficulty were found. As a result of the analysis, the difference values of seven items were eliminated from the test due to the low values. The 33-item achievement test was found to have an average of 0.501, the distinguished average was 0.530 and the Kuder Richardson-20 (KR-20) was 0.877. When the item analysis was examined, a high distinctive and reliable achievement test was developed at medium value for item difficulties. As a result of the study, the achievement test for the acquisitions in the 2018 science curriculum can be used as a measurement assessment tool in accordance with the students' levels and the items in the achievement test developed are multiple choice, so different measurement evaluation questions can be added and the test can be applied.

The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of cooperative learning model on students' academic achievement on the unit of "Matter and Heat". It was used quasi-experimental method to determine the effectiveness of cooperative Reading- Writing-Application (RWA) and Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) methods and survey method used for determining students' demographic features. The sample of this study was 123 students who study at two secondary schools from Agri. For obtaining data, it was used Pre-Knowledge Test (PKT), Academic Achievement Test (AAT) and scale of student for personal features. For the analysis of the obtained data, descriptive statistics and one way variance analysis (ANOVA) are used. According to results of academic achievement test, STAD was more effective than the others methods as statistical. In addition, students' socioeconomic conditions effect on academic achievement. Bu çalışmada İstasyon Tekniği ile öğrenmenin 6. sınıf fen bilimleridersi madde ve ısı ünitesindeki öğrenci akademik başarısına etkisinibelirlemek ve geleneksel öğretimin ve İstasyon Tekniğinin 6. sınıf fenbilimleri dersi madde ve ısı ünitesindeki öğrenci başarısı üzerindeki etkidüzeyini karşılaştırmak amaçlanmıştır. Çalışma ön test son test kontrolgruplu model ile yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini 2016-2017 eğitim-öğretim yılının II. döneminde öğrenim gören 6. sınıf öğrencilerioluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemi ise Diyarbakır’ın Çınarilçesindeki Atatürk ortaokulunda eğitim-öğretim gören 6. sınıftaki 54öğrencidir. Uygulama toplamda 16 ders saati olmak üzere madde ve ısıünitesini kapsayacak şekilde uygulanmıştır. Çalışmanın deney grubunuoluşturan 27 öğrenci istasyon tekniği ile ders işlerken geriye kalan 27kişilik kontrol grubu MEB’in öngördüğü kazanımlara bağlı kalarakgeleneksel yöntem ile ders işlemiştir. Uygulamaya geçilmeden önce deneyve kontrol gruplarına geçerliği ve güvenirliği sağlanmış MIÜBT (madde veısı ünitesi başarı testi) ön test şeklinde uygulanmıştır, uygulamadansonra aynı test son-test olarak her iki gruba da uygulanmıştır. Deney vekontrolgrubuöğrencilerininMIÜBTpuanortalamalarınınkarşılaştırmaları bağımsız gruplar için nonparametrik Mann Whitney-Uile bağımlı gruplar için ise; nonparametrik Wilcoxon İşaretli Sıralar testiile yapılmıştır. Veri analizi sonuçlarına göre başta birbirine yakınbaşarıya sahip olan deney ve kontrol grubunun başarıları çalışmasonrasında artmıştır. Fakat deney grubunun başarı artışı kontrolgrubuna göre anlamlı bir düzeyde artmıştır. In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of the Station Technique on student academic achievement in the 6th Grade Science and Technology course of Matter and Heat unit and to compare the effect of traditional teaching and station technology on student achievement in the 6th Grade science course Matter and heat unit. The study was conducted with pre-test control group model. The universe of the research is the second year of the 2016-2017 academic year, 6th grade students who are studying in the same period. The sample of the research is 54 students in the 6th grade who are studying at Atatürk secondary school in Çınar district of Diyarbakır. The application was applied in a total of 16 lesson hour covering the matter and heat unit. The 27 students who constituted the experimental group of the study were studying with the station technique; the rest of the 27 student control group was taught by traditional methods, depending on the achievements of the MEB. The MIUBT (matter and heat unit achievement test), which was valid and reliable for the experimental and control groups, was applied as a preliminary test before the application. After the application, both groups were applied as the same success test post-test.Comparisons of MIUBT mean scores of the students in the experimental and control groups were compared by the nonparametric Mann Whitney-U test for independent groups and for the dependent groups; nonparametric Wilcoxon Marked Ranks test. According to the results of the data analysis, the successes of the experiment and control group, which has close successes in the first place, increased after the study. However, the success rate of the experimental groupincreased significantly increased level compared to control group.

Bu çalışma, Sibel Er Nas tarafından Prof. Dr. Salih Çepni danışmanlığında tamamlanan “Madde ve Isı Ünitesindeki Kavramların Günlük Hayata Transfer Edilmesinde Derinleştirme Aşamasına Uygun Kılavuz Hazırlamak ve Etkililiğini Değerlendirmek” başlıklı doktora tezinin bir bölümünden üretilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, “Madde ve Isı” ünitesindeki kavramların günlük hayata transfer edilmesinde derinleştirme aşamasına uygun kılavuz hazırlamak ve bu kılavuzun öğrencilerin kavramları günlük yaşamla ilişkilendirebilmelerine yönelik etkisini araştırmaktır. Çalışmada yarı deneysel yöntem kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini 6. sınıfta öğrenim gören 67 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada veriler “Madde ve Isı Ünitesi Günlük Yaşamla İlişkilendirme Testi” ile elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen nicel veriler; Wilcoxon İşaretli Sıralar Testi ve Mann Whitney U-Testi kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Yapılan uygulamalar sonrasında uygulanan kılavuzun deney grubu öğrencilerinin kavramları günlük yaşamları ile ilişkilendirmelerinde anlamlı bir etkisinin olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. The aim of this study is to develop a guide material about elaborate stage in transferring concepts to daily life in "Matter and Heat" unit and to investigate the effects of this guide material on students’ associating concepts with daily life. Semiexperimental research design was used in this study. The sample consisted of 67 sixth grade students. Data obtained from "Matter and Heat Unit Daily Life Associating Test". The quantitative data were analyzed with Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann Whitney U-Test. At the end of applications, it is determined that prepared guide material made statistically significant difference in experiment group students’ associating concepts with daily life.

Bu amaç doğrultusunda ilköğretim 6. sınıf Fen ve Teknoloji dersinde “Madde ve Isı” ünitesinin öğretiminde probleme dayalı öğrenme yaklaşımının öğrencilerin akademik başarısı ile Fen ve Teknoloji dersine yönelik tutumuna etkisinin olup olmadığı incelenmiştir. Bu araştırmada ön test-son test kontrol gruplu deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Deney grubunda probleme dayalı öğrenme yaklaşımı, kontrol grubunda ise geleneksel öğrenme yöntemi kullanılarak Fen ve Teknoloji Öğretim Programı çerçevesinde uygulamalar yapılmıştır. Towards this aim, the effect of problem-based learning approach on 6th grade students’ academic achievement about “Matter and Heat” unit in science and technology course, and attitudes toward science and technology course were investigated. In this research pretest-posttest control group experimental design was used. The experimental group was taught by problem based learning approach while the control group was taught by traditional instruction, according to the science and technology curriculum. In the study according to the pretest-posttest control group experimental design model; Matter and Heat Unit Academic Achievement Test, and Attitudes Towards Science and Technology Course Scale were administered before and after the instructional interventions. According to the results of this study, the instruction of “matter and heat” unit with problem based learning approach was positively affected students’ academic achievement, and attitudes towards science and technology course. Regarding the results of the study, suggestions were made for future scientific researches and implementations of the problem based learning approach.

However, science learning will be affected by new and qualified technological products in future, concerning the improvements in the quality of software and hardware. The purpose of this study was to research the efficacy of a web supported science and technology material on students' success and attitude towards science lessons, which was designed for a matter and heat unit with respect to constructivist learning theory. The research sample consisted of total 56 primary school students, attending 24 females and 32 males at city center of Samsun. Designed with experimental research approach, two groups were randomly chosen as control group and experiment group from the research sample. Web supported science and technology material developed by the researchers were used in the experiment group during the study. Also, lessons in control group were treated with traditional approach. In order to collect data, concept achievement test and science lesson attitude scale were applied to the two groups as pre-test and post test. WOS: 000290875200017 Problem Statement: The use of computers in chemistry education is increasing rapidly and becoming a supporting device in teaching abstract concepts and complex subjects. Because of the fact that temperature-heat, matter and structural features are the subjects in which the students mostly have difficulties, we try to confirm the effectiveness of using computer-assisted instruction in those subject matters. Purpose of Study: The aim of this study is to compare the computer-assisted instruction method with the traditional teaching method in terms of their effectiveness in teaching the "Matter and Heat" unit in the 6(th) grade science curriculum in primary schools. This study aims to confirm if there is a significant difference in the students' academic achievement between the two methods, to investigate the effects of computer-assisted instruction on permanent learning, and to identify the students' points of view about computer-assisted instruction. For this purpose, all the 6th grade students of Asarcik Boarding Primary School of Asarcik in Samsun were enrolled in this study. Methods: The "Matter and Heat" unit was taught to the control group and experimental group students by the use of computer-assisted instruction and traditional methods. The researcher prepared software by the use of the Macromedia Flash 8.0 programme to serve as a teaching medium for the experimental group. The pre-test, post-test and permanency tests, which were applied to both groups, were analysed by a t-test. In addition, the experimental group students were given an inquiry form and interviewed. Findings and Results: According to the results, it is revealed that computer-assisted instruction improves academic achievement and permanency and that the students prefer computer-assisted instruction to other traditional methods in which subjects were taught without student comprehension.
