3. Intrinsic Hippocampal Functional Connectivity Underlying Rigid Memory in Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case-Control Study

Abstract

Atypical learning and memory in early life can promote atypical behaviors in later life. Less relational learning and inflexible retrieval in childhood may enhance restricted and repeated behaviors in patients with autism spectrum disorder. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the mechanisms of atypical memory in children with autism spectrum disorder. We conducted picture-name pair learning and delayed-recognition tests with two groups: one group with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder children (aged 7-16, n = 41) and one group with typically developing children (n = 82) that matched the first group's age, sex, and IQ. We assessed correlations between successful recognition scores and seed-to-whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity. Although both learning and retrieval performances were comparable between the two groups, we observed slightly lower category learning and significantly fewer memory gains in the autism spectrum disorder group than in the typically developing group. The right canonical anterior hippocampal network was involved in successful memory in youths with typically developing, while other memory systems may be involved in successful memory in youths with autism spectrum disorder. Context-independent and less relational memory processing may be associated with fewer memory gains in autism spectrum disorder. These atypical memory characteristics in autism spectrum disorder may accentuate their inflexible behaviors in some situations.

Abstract

Background: The primary purpose of this study was to preliminarily examine the effects of autonomic nervous system activity on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Recent studies have examined approaches to modulating autonomic activity using invasive and non-invasive methods, but the effects of changes in autonomic activity during cognitive tasks on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex have not been fully investigated. The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to examine changes in autonomic activity and blood oxygen saturation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during reading tasks induced by vagus nerve stimulation using a microcone patch. Methods: A cohort of 40 typically developing adults was enrolled in this study. We carefully examined changes in autonomic nervous system activity and blood oxygen saturation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during a reading task in two conditions: with and without microcone patch stimulation. Results: Significant changes in brain activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortext due to microcone patch stimulation were confirmed. In addition, hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed specific changes in reading task-related blood oxygen saturation in the dorsolateral prefrontal region during microcone patch stimulation. Conclusions: It should be recognized that this study is a preliminary investigation and does not have immediate clinical applications. However, our results suggest that changes in autonomic nervous system activity induced by external vagal stimulation may affect activity in specific reading-related regions of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Abstract

This paper studied the gust factor associated with a very strong typhoon (Typhoon Maemi 2003), whose maximum 10 min mean wind speed was greater than 60 m/s. The wind speed was recorded by multiple sonic and vane anemometers near the seashore of an island. Only stationary wind speed samples are analyzed to obtain the gust factor. The study focuses on the dependences of gust factor on gust averaging time, sample duration, and mean wind speed during the typhoon’s passage. The results suggest that typhoon gust factors have no significant difference from those associated with non-typhoon winds, and can be described using models developed for standard neutral boundary layer flow conditions.

Abstract

The wind characteristics of a strong typhoon (Typhoon Maemi 2003) are analyzed on the basis of 10 min wind speed samples. The wind speeds were measured simultaneously by nine vane and seven sonic anemometers at a height of about 15 m. Turbulence intensity and scale, gust factor, peak factor, decay factor of the coherence function, probability distribution function, power spectrum, and their variations with wind speed are obtained. Wind-direction-dependent analysis is conducted on the wind characteristics. Turbulence intensity decreases with wind speed and remain almost constant when the wind speed becomes high. The averaged values of gust factor and peak factor are 1.6 and 3.3, respectively. The spatial cross correlation and decay factor of the coherence function increase slightly with wind speed. The probability density function of fluctuating wind speed of a strong typhoon follows a Gaussian distribution, and the power spectrum of strong wind can be expressed by a Karman-type spectrum at the low frequency. The wind characteristics of this strong typhoon are shown to be very similar to those of non-typhoon winds.

Abstract

The authors have studied out grooved round transmission wires, developing Model LP-810 wire with lesser drag. Aerodynamic characteristic of grooved round transmission wires were studied in wind-tunnel experiments. But being located outdoors, electric power transmission facilities are subject to the design limit loading in a strong wind, which, in most cases, is based on typhoon-weather conditions. Consequently, the wind-tunnel experimentation needs to attach a factor of rainfall to the simulated wind conditions (usual wind conditions). In this laboratory test, the authors set up a watering grid upwind in the wind-tunnel's test section, which simulated a number of rainfall: 0, 2, 4, 8, 10, 16, 25 and 40 mm per 10 min. Those rainfalls were rationalized, based on the domestic weather observation data: 10 min cumulative amounts of rain and 10 min mean wind speeds of time frame. Thus, LP-810 was tested under simulated, rational wind and rainfall conditions, and its design drag coefficients were figured out.

The new type of conductoreduced the drag coefficient (15%) and wind noise (10dBA) was developed. The authors carried out the water flow tunnel test, wind tunnel test and full-scale field test for confirming the reducing mechanism of drag coefficient and evaluating the reduction value of drag coefficient. This paper reports these test results and some evaluations.
