Methods: The medical records of 40 eyes of 36 patients that had undergone 25-gauge vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling for MF were studied. The main outcome measures were the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and the optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings. The eyes were divided into two groups: 1) those with a foveal detachment (FD; FD group); and 2) those without a FD (no-FD group). Results: The postoperative OCT images showed a resolution of the MF with a significant reduction in the central foveal thickness from the preoperative values in both the FD group (479±150 µm to 196±56 µm; P=0.002, mean ± standard deviation) and in the no-FD group (369±116 µm to 245±50 µm; P=0.001). The final mean BCVA significantly improved from the preoperative values in the FD group (0.96±0.53 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution [logMAR] units to 0.70±0.56 logMAR units; P=0.009) and in the no-FD group (0.46±0.38 logMAR units to 0.34±0.36 logMAR units; P=0.007). The final BCVA in the FD group improved in 63%, remained unchanged in 31%, and worsened in 6%. In the no-FD group, the final BCVA improved in 21%, remained unchanged in 71%, and worsened in 8% of the eyes. Methods: The medical charts of 327 patients with type 2 diabetes referred to our department from general physicians were reviewed. A detailed medical history was taken and a complete ophthalmic examination was performed for all patients. The patients were divided into two groups, ie, those with a history of missing ophthalmic examinations for more than a year (noncompliant group) and those with no previous ophthalmic examinations (never-examined group). Serum levels of glycosylated hemoglobin and creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and urine albumin/creatinine ratio were obtained from medical records. Results: Of the 327 patients, 102 had diabetic retinopathy (31.2%), with a mean best-corrected visual acuity of 0.037±0.36 logMAR (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) units. At the initial examination, patients had a detailed interview and underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examinations. All patients were over 20 years of age and did not have glaucoma.Results: A total of 703 patients were evaluated. The mean (±standard error) IOP of the diabetic patients was 15.5 ± 0.2 mmHg (n = 206), and was significantly higher than the 14.0 ± 0.1 mmHg (n = 497) in the nondiabetic patients (P < 0.0001). The IOP was negatively correlated with age (r = –0.202; P = 0.024) in the diabetic patients and was weakly but significantly correlated with the glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level (r = 0.240; P = 0.015) in the group with diabetic retinopathy.Conclusion: The significantly higher IOP in diabetic patients and positive correlation of IOP with HbA1c levels in patients with diabetic retinopathy indicate that IOP in diabetic patients is higher, especially in those with poor control of diabetes.Keywords: diabetes mellitus, diabetic retinopathy, intraocular pressure, open-angle glaucoma

We fabricated quasiantiferromagnetic (quasi-AFM) layers with alternating antiparallel magnetization in the neighboring domains via 90° magnetic coupling through an Fe-O layer. We investigated the magnetic properties and the relationship between the magnetic domain size and the 90° magnetic coupling via experiments and calculations. Two types of samples with a Ru buffer and a (Ni80Fe20)Cr40 buffer were prepared, and we found that with the NiFeCr buffer, the sample has a flatter Fe-O layer, leading to stronger 90° magnetic coupling and a smaller domain size compared with the Ru buffer sample. This trend is well explained by the bilinear and biquadratic coupling coefficients, A12 and B12, in Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert simulations, suggesting the possibility of using both AFM and FM properties by controlling the quasi-AFM domain size. Magnetization reversal through successive ballistic rotation caused by an application of alternative field temporally varying within a relaxation time limit is numerically investigated. As the Gilbert damping constant is smaller than 0.03, a pronounced beat appears in the temporal evolution of rotating angle of magnetization.

In order to elucidate the dependence of the internal electromagnetic-forces on the inter. strand coupling loss in superconducting cable-in-conduit conductors, we develop a new measuring system. This system enables us to measure the coupling loss of large scale conductors with transport current of 20kA and the transverse magnetic field of 3.22T bias in the wide frequency range of the super-posed ripple field of 0.1-300Hz. The data of the preliminary measurements show that the change of the coupling loss is only a little in the low frequency range to the extent of the electromagnetic-force of 0.44MPa in the case of IS-conductor of the poloidal field coil for LHD.

The effect of fringe-field coupling on the magnetization reversal process in submicrometer scale giant magnetoresistive pillars consisting of [[NiFe/Cu].sub.6] has been investigated by means of current perpendicular to plane magnetoresistance measurements and numerical simulations. The parabolic and reversible magnetoresistance curves due to an opposite rotation of magnetization in neighboring NiFe layers were observed. To explain the field sensitivity of the pillars quantitatively, we have proposed a modified single-domain model, where the magnetic energy of the system is reconstructed using the result of the micromagnetic simulation of a magnetostatically coupled bilayer system. The calculated magnetoresistance curves are consistent with the experimental ones. From the calculated results, the amplitude of the saturation field is found to be proportional to the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer and inversely proportional to the square root of the nonmagnetic layer thickness.
