We study the orbital magnetic susceptibility of tilted massless Dirac fermions in two dimensions. It is well-known that the type-I massless Dirac fermions exhibit divergingly-large diamagnetic susceptibility, whereas less is known about the types II and III cases. We first clarify that the orbital magnetic susceptibility is vanishing for the types II and III in the continuum model. We then compare the three types of Dirac fermions for the lattice models. We employ three tight-binding models with different numbers of Dirac points, all of which are two-band models defined on a square lattice. For all three models, we find that the type-I Dirac fermions show the divergingly-large orbital diamagnetic susceptibility, whereas the type-II Dirac fermions exhibit non-diverging paramagnetic susceptibility. The type-III Dirac fermions exhibit diamagnetism but its susceptibility is small compared with the type-I case., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Transverse thermoelectric power generation has emerged as a topic of immense interest in recent years owing to the orthogonal geometry which enables better scalability and fabrication of devices. Here, we investigate the thickness dependence of longitudinal and transverse responses in film-substrate systems i.e., the Seebeck coefficient, Hall coefficient, Nernst coefficient and anomalous Nernst coefficient in a unified and general manner based on the circuit model, which describes the system as the parallel setup. By solving the parallel circuit model, we show that the transverse responses exhibit a significant peak, indicating the importance of a cooperative effect between the film and the substrate, arising from circulating currents that occur in these multilayer systems in the presence of a temperature gradient. Finally, on the basis of realistic material parameters, we predict that the Nernst effect in bismuth thin films on doped silicon substrates is boosted to unprecedented values if the thickness ratio is tuned accordingly, motivating experimental validation., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Unconventional orbital paramagnetism without enhancement of the density of states was recently discovered in the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS. Here, we propose a novel interband mechanism of orbital paramagnetism associated with the negative curvature of energy dispersions, which successfully explains the observed anomalous orbital paramagnetism. This negative curvature arises from energy fluctuations along the nodal line, inherent in realistic nodal-line materials. Our new mechanism indicates that such orbital paramagnetism serves as strong evidence for the existence of nodal lines not only in ZrSiS but potentially in various other nodal-line materials as well.

In magnetic fields, thermal gradient-induced effects such as the Nernst and thermal Hall effects are significantly influenced by phonon drag, which works in conjunction with the force on electrons in a magnetic field. We introduce a method to calculate Nernst and thermal Hall conductivities influenced by phonon drag using linear response theory to treat the magnetic field as a first-order perturbation. Our formula is general enough to apply to various systems in which the Green's functions of electrons and phonons are given. We apply the obtained general theory to the recent experiments of dilute metal SrTiO$_{3-\delta}$, known for strong Nernst and thermal Hall effects due to phonon drag. We find good agreement even quantitatively. This is notable as all model parameters are derived from experimental data without adjustable parameters., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

A generation, propagation, and transfer of phonon angular momenta are examined on thermal transport in chiral insulative and diamagnetic crystals of $\alpha$-quartz. We found that thermally-driven phonons carry chirality-dependent angular momenta in the quartz crystals and they could be extracted from the quartz as a spin signal. Namely, chirality-induced selectivity of phonon angular momenta is realized in the chiral quartz. We argue that chiral phonons available in chiral materials could be a key element in triggering or enhancing chirality-induced spin selectivity with robust spin polarization and long-range spin transport found in various chiral materials., Comment: 6 pages with 3 figures and supplemental materials

We study the properties of the upper critical field of superconductivity in nodal-line semimetals in a continuous model, which has a nodal-line on the $k_{z} = 0$ plane. Using the semiclassical Green's function method, we calculate the upper critical field for the two limiting cases: the dirty limit with many impurities and the clean limit with few impurities. The results show the large anisotropy of the magnitude of the upper critical field and the unusual temperature dependence. We present systematic theoretical results on thermoelectric effects in semimetals based on the variational method of the linearized Boltzmann equation. Inelastic electron-hole scattering is known to play an important role in the unusual transport of semimetals, including the broad $T^2$ temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and the strong violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law. By treating the inelastic electron-hole scattering more precisely beyond the relaxation time approximation, we show that the Seebeck coefficient when compensated depends on the screening length of the Coulomb interaction as well as the Lorenz ratio (the ratio of thermal to electric conductivity due to electrons divided by temperature). It is found that deviations from the compensation condition significantly increase the Seebeck coefficient, along with crucial suppressions of the Lorenz ratio. The result indicates that uncompensated semimetals with the electron-hole scattering have high thermoelectric efficiency when the phonon contribution to thermal conductivity is suppressed., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures + Supplemental Material

The spectral conductivity, i.e., the electrical conductivity as a function of the Fermi energy, is a cornerstone in determining the thermoelectric transport properties of electrons. However, the spectral conductivity depends on sample-specific properties such as carrier concentrations, vacancies, charge impurities, chemical compositions, and material microstructures, making it difficult to relate the experimental result with the theoretical prediction directly. Here, we propose a data-driven approach based on machine learning to reconstruct the spectral conductivity and chemical potential from the thermoelectric transport data. Using this machine learning method, we first demonstrate that the spectral conductivity and temperature-dependent chemical potentials can be recovered within a simple toy model. In a second step, we apply our method to experimental data in doped one-dimensional telluride Ta$_4$SiTe$_4$~[T. Inohara, \textit{et al.}, Appl. Phys. Lett. \textbf{110}, 183901 (2017)] to reconstruct the spectral conductivity and chemical potential for each sample. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of electrons and the maximal figure of merit $ZT$ are estimated from the reconstructed spectral conductivity, which provides accurate estimates beyond the Wiedemann-Franz law. Our study clarifies the connection between the thermoelectric transport properties and the low-energy electronic states of real materials, and establishes a promising route to incorporate experimental data into traditional theory-driven workflows., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. Spin ice presents a typical example of classical spin liquid, where conserved magnetic fluxes emerge from microscopic spin degrees of freedom. In this letter, we investigate the effect of perturbation by magnetic charge disorder in two-dimensional spin ice. To this aim, we develop a novel cluster update algorithm, which enables fast relaxation of magnetic charges. The efficient Monte Carlo calculation reveals a drastic change of spin structure factor as doping magnetic charges: the pinch point, characterizing the spin ice, is gradually replaced by a diffusive peak. We derive an analytical relation connecting the flux fluctuation and the spin structure factor, and explain the evolution of diffusive peak in terms of the roughening of magnetic fluxes., Comment: 9pages, 8figures

The anomalous spin transport coefficients of gapped Dirac electrons are studied with application to a quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor $\alpha$-(BETS)$_2$I$_3$ in mind. In the presence of a gap induced by spin-orbit interaction, we show that the effective Hamiltonian is similar to the model considered by Kane and Mele with additional tilting. With this effective Hamiltonian, conductivity tensors up to the linear order of the applied magnetic field are obtained analytically using the microscopic linear response theory or Kubo formula. It is shown that spin Hall conductivity and anomalous diagonal spin conductivity proportional to the magnetic field become nonzero in this system, which are written in terms of the Berry curvature and orbital magnetic moment.The estimated values of spin conductivities using typical parameters turn out to be comparable to the spin Hall conductivity in Pt.

Orbital magnetic susceptibility involves rich physics such as interband effects despite of its conceptual simplicity. In order to appreciate the rich physics related to the orbital magnetic susceptibility, it is essential to derive a formula to decompose the susceptibility into the contributions from each band. Here, we propose a scheme to perform this decomposition using the modified Wannier functions. The derived formula nicely decomposes the susceptibility into intraband and interband contributions, and from the other aspect, into itinerant and local contributions. The validity of the formula is tested in a couple of simple models. Interestingly, it is revealed that the quality of the decomposition depends on the degree of localization of the used Wannier functions. The formula here complements another formula using Bloch functions, or the formula derived in the semiclassical theory, which deepens our understanding of the orbital magnetic susceptibility and may serve as a foundation of a better computational method. The relationship to the Berry curvature in the present scheme is also clarified.

To understand the unexpectedly high thermoelectric performance observed in the thin-film Heusler alloy Fe$_2$V$_{0.8}$W$_{0.2}$Al, we study the magnon drag effect, generated by the tungsten based impurity band, as a possible source of this enhancement, in analogy to the phonon drag observed in FeSb$_2$. Assuming that the thin-film Heusler alloy has a conduction band integrating with the impurity band, originated by the tungsten substitution, we derive the electrical conductivity $L_{11}$ based on the self-consistent t-matrix approximation and the thermoelectric conductivity $L_{12}$ due to magnon drag, based on the linear response theory, and estimate the temperature dependent electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and power factor. Finally, we compare the theoretical results with the experimental results of the thin-film Heusler alloy to show that the origin of the exceptional thermoelectric properties is likely to be due to the magnon drag related with the tungsten-based impurity band., Comment: 5+3 pages, 3+2 figures

Thermoelectric materials intrigue much interest due to their wide range of application such as power generators and refrigerators. The efficiency of thermoelectric materials is quantified by the figure of merit, and a figure greater than unity is desired. To achieve this, a large Seebeck coefficient and low phonon thermal conductivity are required. We show that this can be achieved with a thin film of topological nodal line semimetals. We also discusses the correlation effect and spin current induced by a temperature gradient. We study longitudinal electric and thermoelectric transport coefficients of Dirac fermions on a simple lattice model where tuning of a single parameter enables us to change the type of Dirac cones from type-I to type-II. We pay particular attention to the behavior of the critical situation, i.e., the type-III Dirac cone. We find that the transport coefficients of the type-III Dirac fermions behave as the limiting case of neither the type-I nor type-II. On the one hand, the qualitative behaviors of the type-III case are similar to those of the type-I case. On the other hand, the transport coefficients do not change monotonically upon increasing the tilting; namely, the largest thermoelectric response is obtained not for the type-III case but for the optimally tilted type-I case. For the optimal case, the sizable transport coefficients are obtained; for example, the dimensionless figure of merit is 0.18., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

It has been proposed that paramagnetic materials exhibit a unique thermoelectric effect near the ferromagnetic transition point due to spin fluctuations. This phenomenon is often referred to as paramagnon drag. We calculate the contribution of this paramagnon drag to the Seebeck coefficient microscopically on the basis of the linear response theory. This leed to a general formula for the contribution to the Seebeck coefficient due to the paramagnon drag, and we clarify the conditions in which the Seebeck coefficient enhances near the ferromagnetic transition point for a single-band and isotropic system. Moreover, we calculate the Seebeck coefficients for a band $\varepsilon \propto k^n$ and a mixture of free-electron-like and flat bands., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

In this letter, we address magnetization switching by oxygen adsorption in porous metal-organic framework systems. To this end, we construct a simple localized spin model combined with a Langmuir-type formula for oxygen adsorption and study its finite-temperature properties using Monte Carlo simulation. We successfully explain the main features of this phenomenon, such as the discontinuous changes in magnetic states, sensitivity of the magnetic transition temperatures to oxygen pressure, and absence of singularities in adsorbed oxygen. The bulk properties of nodal line materials have been an important research topic in recent years. In this paper, we study the orbital magnetic susceptibility and the Hall conductivity of nodal line materials using the formalism with thermal Green's functions and find characteristic singular behaviors of them. It is shown that, in the vicinity of the gapless nodal line, the orbital magnetic susceptibility shows a $\delta$-function singularity and the Hall conductivity shows a step function behavior in their chemical potential dependences. Furthermore, these singular behaviors are found to show strong field angle dependences corresponding to the orientation of the nodal line in the momentum space. These singular behaviors and strong angle dependences will give clear evidence for the presence of the nodal line and its orientation and can be used to experimentally detect nodal line materials., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Nodal line in single-component molecular conductor [Pd(dddt)_2] has been examined to understand the tilted Dirac cone on the non-coplanar loop. In the previous work [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 87, 113701 (2018)], the velocity of the cone was calculated at respective Dirac points on the nodal loop based on our first-principles band structure calculations, which was a new method to derive an effective Hamiltonian with a 2 x 2 matrix. However, the Dirac cones on the nodal line are fully reproduced only at symmetric points. In the present paper, we show that our improved method well reproduces reasonable behaviors of all the Dirac cones and a very small energy dispersion of 6~meV among the Dirac points. The variation of velocities along the nodal line are shown by using principal axes of the gap function between the conduction and valence bands. Further, the density of states close to the chemical potential and orbital magnetic susceptibility are calculated using such an effective Hamiltonian., Comment: 9pages, 9figures

A theory for anomalous enhancement of NMR relaxation rate $1/T_{1}T$ of $^{125}$Te toward zero temperature observed in Pb$_{1-x}$Tl$_{x}$Te ($x$=0.01) is presented on the idea of the charge Kondo effect of valence skipping element Tl. It is found that such enhancement in $1/T_{1}T$ is caused through enhancement of the pair-hopping and inter-orbital interactions between 6s electrons localized on Tl site and conduction electrons doped in the hole band the semiconductor PbTe, which is the heart of the charge Kondo effect. It is also found that the Knight shift is not influenced in the temperature region where the relaxation rate is enhanced which is consistent with the experimental observation showing that the Korringa relation is apparently broken., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, ver.2, to be submitted to J. We propose a new type of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions which act on high-rank multipolar moments such as quadrupolar and octupolar moments. Here we consider 5d1 systems with broken spatial inversion symmetry, where the interplay of electron correlation, the spin-orbit coupling, and inversion symmetry breaking plays a crucial role. Using a numerical diagonalization on a two-site multiorbital Hubbard model, we reveal that anti-symmetric products of multipole operators have finite expectation values, indicating the existence of DM interactions for multipoles. We also find that the spin-orbit coupling dependences of DM interactions for multipoles are significantly different depending on the lattice structure. Finally, we discuss the numerical results for small and large spin-orbit coupling region by using perturbative analysis., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

The presence of a Dirac nodal line in a time-reversal and inversion symmetric system is dictated by the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index when spin-orbit interaction is absent. In a first principles calculation, we show that a Dirac nodal line can emerge in $\mathbb{Z}_2$ trivial material by calculating the band structure of SnSe in a face centered cubic lattice as an example. We qualitatively show that it becomes a topological crystalline insulator when spin-orbit interaction is taken into account. We clarify the origin of the Dirac nodal line by obtaining irreducible representations corresponding to bands and explain the triviality of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index. We construct an effective model representing the Dirac nodal line using the {\bf k}$\cdot${\bf p} method, and discuss the Berry phase and a surface state expected from the Dirac nodal line., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

We study a microscopic derivation and the properties of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) between local magnetic moments in ferromagnet/heavy metal heterostructures. First, we derive DMI by Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction through electrons in a heavy metal with Rashba spin orbit interaction (SOI). Next, we study the dependences of the DMI on the Rashba SOI, lattice constant, and chemical potential. We find that the DMI amplitude increases linearly when the Rashba SOI is small, has a maximum when the Rashba SOI is comparable to the hopping integral, and decreases when the Rashba SOI is large. The sign of the DMI not only changes depending on the sign of the Rashba SOI but also the lattice constants and the chemical potential of the heavy metal. We study the temperature dependence of the orbital susceptibility of an excitonic insulator on the basis of a two-band model. It is shown that a drastic change (an anomalous enhancement) in susceptibility as a function of temperature occurs owing to the occurrence of additional orbital susceptibility due to the excitonic gap. We calculate explicitly the temperature dependence of orbital susceptibility for a model of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, and show that the result is consistent with experimental results., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in J. An extended formula for orbital susceptibility including corrections of the Peierls phase is introduced. By using the new developed formula, the orbital susceptibility of benzene is estimated analytically on the basis of the $\pi$ electron approximation. As a result, it is found that the orbital susceptibility is 1.2 times larger than that estimated only from the Peierls phase. The Coulomb interaction dependence of the orbital susceptibility of benzene is also discussed by using exact diagonalization. It is found that the absolute value of the orbital susceptibility decreases as the Coulomb interaction increases, while the ratio of the orbital susceptibility with and without the corrections of the Peierls phase increases. Finally, we discuss the orbital susceptibility of a single-band tight-binding model on a square lattice. We propose a new physical interpretation of the Diophantine equation of $\sigma_{xy}$ for the Hofstadter problem. First, we divide the energy spectrum, or Hofstadter's butterfly, into smaller self-similar areas called "subcells", which were first introduced by Hofstadter to describe the recursive structure. We find that in the energy gaps between subcells, there are two ways to account for the quantization rule of $\sigma_{xy}$, that are consistent with the Diophantine equation: Landau quantization of (i) massless Dirac fermions or (ii) free fermions in Hofstadter's butterfly., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, To be published in J. We discuss the relationship between the quantum Hall conductance and a fractal energy band structure, Hofstadter's butterfly, on a square lattice under a magnetic field. At first, we calculate the Hall conductance of Hofstadter's butterfly on the basis of the linear responce theory. By classifying the bands into some groups with a help of continued fraction expansion, we find that the conductance at the band gaps between the groups accord with the denominators of fractions obtained by aborting the expansion halfway. We present a theory of negative Coulomb drag in capacitively coupled quantum wires based on the commensurability of the electron density and the long-range nature of the Coulomb interaction in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The commensurability introduces a notion of doped particles and holes. We point out that the long-range interaction allows a particle-hole pairing over the wires and that the particle-hole pairing brings about the positive drag of holes, that is, the negative drag.

It is shown that an asymmetric spin-orbit interaction is appreciably renormalized by the effect of critical spin fluctuations. As an explicit example, the Rashba-type interaction is predicted to be suppressed by anti-ferromagnetic critical fluctuations near the hot line (or point), leading to a deformation of the Fermi surface near the hot line (or point) around which the band splitting is decreased, while ferromagnetic critical fluctuations are shown to enhance the Rashba-type interaction everywhere on the Fermi surface, leading to an increase in the band splitting. It is also found that the many-body mass renormalization, which diverges towards the magnetic quantum critical point, is in the opposite sign for the two split bands by the Rashba-type interaction. We discuss a role of the localized $\pi$ orbital, which exists around the defect, on the defect-induced Kondo effect in graphene by a numerical renormalization group study. We find that the localized $\pi$ orbital assists this Kondo effect, and the Kondo temperature is sensitive to the broadening of the localized $\pi$ orbital. Secondly, we focus on the negative magnetoresistance of this Kondo effect. In the experimental result, it has been shown that the negative magnetoresistance is ten times larger than the usual Kondo effect. In order to clarify the mechanism of the "magnetic sensitive" Kondo effect, as a first step, we study an orbital magnetic field dependence of the localized $\pi$ orbital by a tight-binding model with a Peierls phase. We find that as the magnetic field increases, the spectral width of the localized $\pi$ orbital increases and the local DOS at the Fermi level decreases. Since the Kondo temperature is strongly dependent of the broadening of the localized $\pi$ orbital, it is expected that this Kondo effect is sensitive to the orbital magnetic field as observed in the experiment., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. The exchange interaction between 5d electrons in t$_{2g}$ orbitals is derived in the J-J coupling scheme which is the appropriate basis in the case of strong spin-orbit interaction. From simple calculations, it is found that ferromagnetic Ising interaction (quantum compass model) occurs due to a selection rule of hybridization between $\Gamma_7$ and $\Gamma_8$ orbitals, while antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction appears from hybridization between $\Gamma_7$ orbitals. It is also found that the ferromagnetic Ising interaction becomes small as the spin-orbit interaction increases. Thus, the sign of exchange interaction changes from ferromagnetic Ising to antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction as the spin-orbit interaction increases., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in J. The effects of a spin-orbit interaction on transition-metal ions of (4d)^3- and (5d)^3 -based oxides in which three electrons occupy t_{2g} orbitals are studied. The amplitude of the magnetic moment of d electrons on the 5d and 4d orbitals is estimated by numerical diagonalization. It is found that the magnetic moment is reduced by the spin-orbit interaction. It is suggested that (4d)^3- and (5d)^3 -based oxides are located in the middle of the L-S and J-J coupling schemes., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

The effect of the Zeeman field on the defect-induced Kondo effect in graphene is investigated. The effective model of the Kondo effect is derived, and is analyzed on the basis of the numerical renormalization group method. It is found that, under the Zeeman field, at the border of the spin polarized state and the Kondo-Yosida singlet state, there is an unusual fixed point where the entropy of the defect is k_B ln2 and the expectation value of S^2_z is 1/8., Comment: Proceedings of the 20th International Conference on High Magnetic Fields in Semiconductor Physics. A new microscopic model of the charge Kondo effect is proposed, and is studied on the basis of a numerical renormalization group calculations. It is shown that the charge Kondo effect is caused by a pair hopping interaction between the conduction band and the localized band. It is found that the formation of a charge Kondo-Yosida singlet due to its mechanism corresponds to the appearance of valence skipping phenomenon, and that the charge Kondo-Yosida singlet and the spin Kondo-Yosida singlet state coexist for a tuned parameter set, because the charge and spin degrees of freedom are separated in this model. We discuss the ground state of Benzene dianion (Bz$^{2-}$) on the basis of the numerical diagonalization method of an effective model of $\pi$ orbitals. Transition metal-phtahalocyanine(Pc) compound, TPP[Fe(Pc)(CN)$_2$]$_2$, which is one of molecular conductors of charge transfer type with 3/4-filled conduction band consisting of LUMO of Pc molecules, shows characteristic features in transport and magnetic properties resulting from localized magnetic moments $S=1/2$ associated with Fe$^{+3}$ atoms. We construct an effective tight-binding model of this system and study the mechanism of exchange interaction, $J$, between $d$ and $\pi$ electrons based on both second order perturbation of transfer integrals between $d$ and $\pi$ orbitals and numerical diagonalization. It is found that there is no hybridization between $d$-orbitals and LUMO of $\pi$-orbitals and then super-exchange interaction in the Anderson model does not exist. An effective model that describes the Kondo effect due to a point defect in graphene is developed, taking account of the electronic state and the lattice structure of the defect. It is shown that this model can be transformed into a single-channel pseudogap Anderson model with a finite chemical potential. We study a magnetic field effect on the Non-Fermi Liquid (NFL) which arises around the quantum critical point (QCP) due to the competition between the f^2-crystalline-electric-field singlet and the Kondo-Yosida singlet states by using the numerical renormalization ground method. We show the characteristic temperature T_F^*, corresponding to a peak of a specific heat, is not affected by the magnetic field up to H_z^* which is determined by the distance from the QCP or characteristic energy scales of each singlet states. As a result, in the vicinity of QCP, there are parameter regions where the NFL is robust against the magnetic field, at an observable temperature range T > T_F^*, up to H_z^* which is far larger than T_F^* and less than min(T_{K2}, $Delta)., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
