Abstract

Protoperidinium claudicans is a planktonic, heterotrophic, bioluminescent dinoflagellate species commonly found in neritic waters. It has long been considered to display phenotypic variation in its second anterior intercalary plate, which could vary between quadra, penta and hexa. The equivalent spinose, cordate cyst goes under the name of Votadinium spinosum. Here we perform incubation experiments with cysts from France, Canada, China and Japan, which demonstrate that P. claudicans forms a species complex, with at least two ribotypes with a penta configuration (P. claudicans) and one with a quadra configuration (P. carriae sp. nov.). A fossil-based cyst, V. multispinosum sp. nov., is described as the equivalent of P. carriae. Molecular phylogenetics using large subunit ribosomal DNA supports these observations. The cyst–theca relationships for Votadinium psilodora and another, undescribed, cordate, spineless Votadinium species are also reported from China. Macromolecular analyses of the cyst wall of V. multispinosum reveal it is comprised of a protein-rich carbohydrate compound. We show that this compound is not uncommon in dinoflagellate and ciliate cysts and that it is unlikely to preserve very well upon sedimentation and burial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A mass mortality event involving cultured blood cockles (Tegillarca granosa) occurred in the Welu estuary in Chanthaburi Province, Thailand, during July and early August of 2013. We collected surviving blood cockles (n = 30) shortly after the mortality event in mid-August and evaluated the physiological conditions of the specimens by performing histological observations of various organs. We found that most specimens of both sexes were at the peak of spawning. Histological observations revealed an absence of food in their digestive ducts and flattened epithelial cells in their midgut glands. The specimens had been experiencing low food availability and nutrient uptake. In addition, rainfall data for Chanthaburi Province revealed that the rainfall in July 2013 was more than twice the average amount received in previous years, and surface salinity data from around the aquaculture site revealed that salinity was < 10 Practical Salinity Unit for longer than a month. Therefore, we concluded that prolonged low-salinity conditions were a major cause of this mass mortality event.

7. Sexual Maturation of the Blood Cockle, Tegillarca granosa (Linnaeus, 1758), in Aquaculture Grounds along the Selangor Coast, Malaysia.

Abstract

Blood cockle sampling and water quality monitoring were conducted monthly between September 2011 and June 2013 at four blood cockle aquaculture farms situated along the Selangor coast, of Malaysia. Histological observations of the gonads were performed to identify male and female blood cockles. The maturation of gonadal tissue was evaluated, and the relationship between the maturation status of blood cockles and water quality factors, such as salinity and chlorophyll a concentration, was examined at each station. Mature and spawning male cockles were present year-round at all stations except at Station C, where males were more susceptible to the influence of the estuary. Females exhibited a distinct seasonal change in gonadal tissue compared with males, with a higher proportion of spent-stage individuals during the dry season. In addition, the number of immature individuals, for which it was difficult to distinguish between males and females, increased during that period. These results showed that spawning activity on the Selangor coast is more prominent during the rainy season and less pronounced during the dry season. The relationship between salinity, chlorophyll a concentration, and the gonadal tissue maturation stage of the cockle was identified. These findings reveal that sexual maturation progressed in brackish water with a salinity of approximately 28 in both males and females. As salinity decreased to less than 25, the proportion of immature and spent-stage individuals that released sperm or eggs increased. Additionally, immature individuals' percentage increased when chlorophyll a concentration was low (<10 µg.L–1), whereas mature individuals' percentage increased when concentrations were between 10 and 20 µg.L–1. These findings suggest that the increase in chlorophyll a concentration and decrease in salinity in brackish water environments are environmental factors that influence the sexual maturation and spawning of blood cockles. 11. Numerals and Timelines of a Shared Sign Language in Japan: Miyakubo Sign Language on Ehime-Oshima Island

Abstract

The current study continues our effort to document a shared sign language in Japan--Miyakubo Sign Language (Miyakubo SL) on Ehime-Oshima Island, located in the western part of Japan. After a brief sociological, geographical, and cultural introduction to Miyakubo SL, the topics of numeral expressions and timelines in Miyakubo SL are discussed. A comparison of the numerical system to that of Japanese Sign Language clearly shows that the differences between Miyakubo SL and JSL extend beyond mere lexical variety. In addition, Miyakubo SL provides a new set of data for two types of timelines: a partial timeline that uses the signer's body as the point of reference, and a celestial timeline which refers to the movement of the sun.

For assessment of the potential of the Beppu Bay sediments as a Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) candidate for the Anthropocene, we have integrated datasets of 99 proxies. The datasets for the sequences date back 100 years for most proxy records and 1300 years for several records. The cumulative number of occurrences of the anthropogenic fingerprint reveal unprecedented increases above the base of the 1953 flood layer at 64.6 cm (1953 CE), which coincides with an initial increase in global fallout of 239Pu+240Pu. The onset of the proliferation of anthropogenic fingerprints was followed by diverse human-associated events, including a rapid increase in percent modern 14C in anchovy scales, changes in nitrogen and carbon cycling as recorded by anchovy δ15N and δ13C, elevated pollution of heavy metals, increased depositions of novel materials (spheroidal carbonaceous particles, microplastics, polychlorinated biphenyls), the occurrence of hypoxia (Re/Mo ratio) and eutrophication (biogenic opal, TOC, TN, diatoms, chlorophyll a), unprecedented microplankton community changes (compositions of carotenoids, diatoms, dinoflagellates), abnormally high spring air temperatures as inferred from diatom fossils, and lithological changes. These lines of evidence indicate that the base of the 1953 layer is the best GSSP level candidate in the stratigraphy at this site.
