Abstract

Magnetic reconnection in laser-produced magnetized plasma is investigated by using optical diagnostics. The magnetic field is generated via Biermann battery effect, and the inversely directed magnetic field lines interact with each other. It is shown by self-emission measurement that two colliding plasmas stagnate on a mid-plane forming two planar dense regions, and that they interact later in time. Laser Thomson scattering spectra are distorted in the direction of the self-generated magnetic field, indicating asymmetric ion velocity distribution and plasma acceleration. In addition, the spectra perpendicular to the magnetic field show different peak intensity, suggesting an electron current formation. These results are interpreted as magnetic field dissipation, reconnection, and outflow acceleration. Abstract

We report fabrication and measurement of a device where closely-placed two parallel InAs nanowires (NWs) are contacted by source and drain normal metal electrodes. Established technique includes selective deposition of double nanowires onto a previously defined gate region. By tuning the junction with the finger bottom gates, we confirmed the formation of parallel double quantum dots, one in each NW, with a finite electrostatic coupling between each other. With the fabrication technique established in this study, devices proposed for more advanced experiments, such as Cooper-pair splitting and the observation of parafermions, can be realized.

Abstract

High-bit-rate nanocavity-based single photon sources in the 1,550-nm telecom band are challenges facing the development of fibre-based long-haul quantum communication networks. Here we report a very fast single photon source in the 1,550-nm telecom band, which is achieved by a large Purcell enhancement that results from the coupling of a single InAs quantum dot and an InP photonic crystal nanocavity. At a resonance, the spontaneous emission rate was enhanced by a factor of 5 resulting a record fast emission lifetime of 0.2 ns at 1,550 nm. We also demonstrate that this emission exhibits an enhanced anti-bunching dip. This is the first realization of nanocavity-enhanced single photon emitters in the 1,550-nm telecom band. This coupled quantum dot cavity system in the telecom band thus provides a bright high-bit-rate non-classical single photon source that offers appealing novel opportunities for the development of a long-haul quantum telecommunication system via optical fibres., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We study the odd-frequency Cooper pairs formed near the surface of superfluid 3He. The odd-frequency pair amplitude is closely related to the local density of states in the low energy limit. We derive a formula relating explicitly the two quantities. This formula holds for arbitrary boundary condition at the surface. We also present some numerical results on the surface odd-frequency pair amplitude in superfluid 3He-B. Those analytical and numerical results allow one to interpret the midgap surface density of states, observed recently by transverse acoustic impedance measurements on superfluid 3He-B, as the manifestation of the surface odd-frequency state., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, published in Phys. Abstract

OBJETIVO: avaliar a influência de diferentes variáveis metodológicas sobre a resistência de união ao cisalhamento em estudos in vitro. MÉTODOS: foram utilizados 105 incisivos permanentes bovinos, seccionados ao nível do colo dentário. A porção coronária foi inclusa em tubos de PVC, com resina acrílica autopolimerizável, e com face vestibular voltada para cima. Todos os corpos de prova foram preparados para a colagem com profilaxia e condicionamento ácido na região central das coroas, onde foram posicionados braquetes Morelli® de incisivos centrais superiores, com resina Concise® Ortodôntico (3M/Unitek). Foram determinados três grupos de acordo com a variável estudada: (Grupo 1) - meio de armazenamento dos dentes, previamente à inclusão e à colagem, com solução de timol 0,1% (a), água destilada (b) e congelamento (c); (Grupo 2) - velocidade da célula de carga da máquina de ensaio de 0,5 (a), 1,0 (b) e 2,0mm/min (c) e (Grupo 3) - diferentes marcas comerciais de ácidos fosfóricos a 37%, 3M/Unitek (a), AcidGel (b) e Attack Tek (c). Os corpos de prova foram submetidos ao ensaio mecânico de resistência ao cisalhamento através da máquina Emic DL2000®. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente por meio do Teste t Student para amostras independentes. RESULTADOS: os resultados demonstraram que no Grupo 1 o subgrupo de congelamento apresentou maiores valores em relação aos outros dois subgrupos, porém sem diferença estatisticamente significativa (p > 0,05). No Grupo 2, a força no momento da ruptura foi menor à medida que era aumentada a velocidade da célula de carga, porém sem diferença significativa entre os subgrupos. No Grupo 3, o ácido da 3M/Unitek apresentou a maior média em MPa, no entanto, também sem diferença significativa entre os subgrupos. CONCLUSÕES: conclui-se, portanto, que as variáveis analisadas neste trabalho não apresentaram influência suficiente para determinação de diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os resultados.AIM: Evaluate the influence of several methodological variables on the shear bond strength of in vitro studies. METHODS: 105 bovine incisors were sectioned at the cervical level. The coronary portion was included in PVC rings, fulfilled with auto polymerized acrylic resin, with its labial faces turned to the top. All the samples were prepared for bonding, cleaned and acid etched on the central area of the crowns. In this area, central incisors' Morelli™ brackets were bonded with Concise™ (3M/Unitek). Three testing groups were established, according to the studied variable: Group 1 - storage previous to bonding (a-Thymol 0,1%; b- distilled water; c- freezing); Group 2 - crosshead speed of the universal testing machine (a- 0,5mm/min; b- 1,0mm/min; c- 2,00mm/min) and Group 3 - commercial brand of 37% phosphoric acid (a- 3M/Unitek; b- Acid Gel; c- Attack Tek). The shear bond strength test was performed at the Emic DL2000™ universal testing machine. Data was analyzed through the Student's t test for independent samples. RESULTS: In Group 1, the freezing group showed the higher values of shear bond strength when compared to the others, although no statistical difference was observed (p>0,05). For Group 2, the higher the crosshead speed, the lower the shear bond strength, with no statistical difference. In Group 3, the 3M/Unitek brand showed the highest average of shear bond strength in MPa, but also no statistical difference was shown. CONCLUSIONS: The variable analyzed in this research had not presented enough influence to determine significant differences between the results.

44. Asymptotic Genetic Response Due to Two-Stage Genomic Index Selection Derived from Correlated or Independent Indices during Both Stages

Abstract

We developed equations to predict the asymptotic response due to two-stage selection, where first-stage selection was performed by using GEBVs based solely on genotypes and second-stage selection was performed with GEBVs that combined genotypes and phenotypes. The situation that we considered involved four-path selection executed as sires to breed sons, sires to breed daughters, dams to breed sons, and dams to breed daughters. We established two procedures to predict the response. The first incorporated correlated indices during the first and second-stage selections of two-stage selection. The other procedure used independent indices during two-stage selection. The response per generation in the initial generation was greater for the correlated indices than for the independent indices. However, the asymptotic response per generation was slightly greater for the independent indices than for the correlated indices. The asymptotic response per generation was lower during two-stage selection than during single-stage selection. However, the asymptotic response per year was greater for two-stage selection than for single-stage selection. In addition, that trend was more conspicuous when the economic weight was 1:3 for the first (h2 =0.3) to second (h2 =0.05) index trait compared with economic weights of 1:1 and 3:1. However, the magnitude of the response to the aggregate genotype-relative not to single-stage selection but to absolute magnitude was greater at an economic weight of 3:1 than at those of 1:1 and 1:3. The reduction in genetic variance from the initial to an asymptotic generation was greater for a scenario where young parents selected at the first-stage accounted for 30% of all parents in two-stage selection than where they accounted for 70%. The reduction in genetic variance of the aggregate genotype over generations was smaller for independent indices than correlated indices during two-stage selection. Our new formula for predicting genetic response applies to any combination of accuracies of GEBVs and intensities of selection. Therefore, the formula presented is a general equation for predicting genetic response over generations due to two-stage genomic index selection.
