Abstract

We study no-hair properties of static black holes in four and higher dimensional spacetimes with a cosmological constant. For the vanishing cosmological constant case, we show a no-hair theorem and also a no-short-hair theorem under certain conditions for the energy-momentum of matter fields. For the positive cosmological constant case, we discuss conditions for hairy static black holes to exist in terms of the energy density of matter fields evaluated at the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon. For the negative cosmological constant case, we study conditions for hairy black holes by presenting a no-hair theorem in which the asymptotic structure is assumed to be determined by the true cosmological constant., Comment: revised version, references added, two appendixes given for more discussions on the Johannsen-Psaltis parametrized metrics and the relation between the no-short hair and null circular orbit, to appear in CQG

Abstract

Recent experimental results indicate that mixing is enhanced by a reciprocal flow induced inside a levitated droplet with an oscillatory deformation [T. Watanabe et al. Sci. Rep. 8, 10221 (2018)]. Generally, reciprocal flow cannot convect the solutes in time average, and agitation cannot take place. In the present paper, we focus on the diffusion process coupled with the reciprocal flow. We theoretically derive that the diffusion process can be enhanced by the reciprocal flow, and the results are confirmed via numerical calculation of the over-damped Langevin equation with a reciprocal flow., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Background: Recently, there has been a significant increase in the utilization of self-expandable metallic stents (SEMSs) for treating malignant colorectal obstructions through colorectal stenting. The mechanical properties of SEMSs are usually considered to affect clinical outcomes of patients with malignant colorectal obstructions. Methods: This single-arm, prospective, multicenter study of SEMS with a lower axial force and high axial force zero-border included 200 patients with malignant colorectal obstruction. Technical and clinical success, stent patency, and adverse events associated with SEMS placement were evaluated. Results: One patient was excluded, and 199 patients were evaluated. The treatment intent was bridge-to-surgery in 129 and palliation in 70 patients. Technical and clinical success rates were 99.5% and 97.0%, respectively. The percentage of the ColoRectal Obstruction Scoring System scores of 3 or higher improved significantly from 19.2% before placement to 93.9% after placement. Clinical success was not achieved in five patients due to insufficient stent expansion in four patients and stent occlusion in one patient. Only one patient underwent emergency surgery for perforation of the proximal colon, far from where the stent was placed; the rescue procedure was not performed, despite no improvement in proximal dilatation due to insufficient stent expansion. Among the palliation cohort, 15 patients received chemotherapy, including molecular-targeted agents such as bevacizumab. There were no fatal cases related to stent placement. Conclusions: For management of malignant colorectal obstruction, this newly developed SEMS with low axial force and a high axial force zero-border showed high technical and clinical success rates, and an extremely low perforation rate (0.5%). Abstract

A droplet of millimeter-to-centimeter scale can exhibit electrostatic levitation, and such levitated droplets can be used for the measurement of the surface tension of the liquids by observing the characteristic frequency of oscillatory deformation. In the present study, a simple mechanical model is proposed by considering a single mode of oscillation in the ellipsoidal deformation of a levitated rotating droplet. By measuring the oscillation frequency with respect to the rotational speed and oscillation amplitude, it is expected that the accuracy of the surface tension measurement could be improved. Using the proposed model, the dependences of the characteristic frequency of oscillatory deformation and the averaged aspect ratio are calculated with respect to the rotational angular velocity of a rotating droplet. Abstract

The long-duration fluid physics experiments on a thermocapillary-driven flow have been carried out on the Japanese experiment module 'Kibo' aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since 2008. In these experiments, various aspects of thermocapillary convection in a half-zone (HZ) liquid bridge of high Prandtl number fluid have been examined under the advantages of the long-duration high-quality microgravity environment. This fluid dynamics video introduce a pinch off of liquid bridge of 30 mm in diameter as a part of the on-orbit experiments. Abstract

Acidovorax sp. KKS102 is a beta-proteobacterium capable of degrading polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In this study, we examined its growth in liquid nutrient broth supplemented with different carbon sources. KKS102 had at least 3 distinct metabolic phases designated as metabolic phases 1-3, with phase 2 having 2 sub-phases. For example, succinate, fumarate, and glutamate, known to repress the PCB/biphenyl catabolic operon in KKS102, were utilized in phase 1, while acetate, arabinose, and glycerol in phase 2, and glucose and mannose in phase 3. We also showed that the BphQ response regulator mediating catabolite control in KKS102, whose expression level increased moderately through the growth, plays important roles in carbon metabolism in phases 2 and 3. Our study elucidates the hierarchical growth of KKS102 in nutrient-rich media. This insight is crucial for studies exploiting microbial biodegradation capabilities and advancing studies for catabolite regulation mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
