Abstract

The tilt angle, i.e., the angle from horizontal made by the fish body as its head dives down or up, affects the readings on fish echo soundings. We measured the tilt angle of Japanese sandeels (Ammodytes personatus Girard) in a water tank, and calculated the acoustic target strength (TS) using a theoretical scattering model. This study examined the TS of sandeels from the northern coast of Hokkaido, which have a larger body size than those in other regions in Japan. TS values for sandeels, a swimbladderless fish, were estimated using a distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) model at two frequencies: 38 and 120 kHz. The mean tilt angle was 20.4?? (S.D. = 18.5??), which differed slightly from that of the lesser sandeel, Ammodytes marinus. The regression equations of the average TS values were TS38kHz = 8.2 log10SL ??? 74.2 and TS120kHz = 20.9 log10SL ??? 92.6, respectively. At 120 kHz, the slope was close to 20, suggesting that the acoustic backscattering strength was proportional to the square of the body length. This value was smaller at 38 kHz, suggesting that the acoustic backscattering strength was stable to differences in body length. We obtained a small discrepancy for both frequencies (??TS = TS120kHz???TS38kHz) were TS120kHz < TS38kHz. Discrepancies of ???1.3 dB for the maximum TS, and ???1.8 dB for averaged TS were found in 72 fish samples, which would be useful for identifying sandeel schools in practical analysis using TS differences.

26. Proposed criterion for distinguishing ABO mosaics from ABO chimeras using flow cytometric analysis

Abstract

Differentiation of ABO mosaics from chimeras is performed using flow cytometry (FCM) analysis. Although mosaics and chimeras have been distinguished by presence or absence of clear resolution using FCM analysis, the lack of quantitative metrics and definitive criteria for this differentiation has made some cases difficult to differentiate. In this study, therefore, we attempted to establish a definitive and quantitative criterion for this differentiation. When FCM histogram gates for group “A” or “B” antigen-negative and -positive red blood cells (RBCs) were set such that group O RBCs were classified as 99 percent negative and group A or B RBCs as 99 percent positive, the percentages of RBCs in the middle region of six chimeras and 23 mosaics (12 A mosaics and 11 B mosaics) were 0.1–0.6 percent and 7.0–19.0 percent, respectively. This result suggested that ABO mosaics and chimeras can be unambiguously differentiated when the cutoff point of the intermediate region is set to 1 percent. Immunohematology2015;31:24–28.

29. Response of unresectable pancreatic cancer to intraoperative radiotherapy

Abstract

Eight patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer were treated by intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) with electron beams, and the tumor responses were followed using serial CT scans. In five cases, external beam irradiation with 10 MV X-rays was added. While there was no evident change after 2-3 weeks, 6-8 weeks after IORT partial responses were noted in all five examined cases. Furthermore, 12-16 weeks after IORT, three out of five examined patients showed good tumor response with more than 75% regression. Mean survival time was 8.0 +/- 2.7 months. Two patients who lived longer than 1.5 years had shown excellent tumor responses. Serial CT scans in the early period following IORT allowed accurate estimation of the tumor response, which might predict some long-surviving cases.

Abstract

Background and Objectives Molecular analyses of Rhnull individuals have revealed that abnormalities occur only at the RH or RHAG gene. Rhnull phenotype arises from two distinct genetic mechanisms, the amorph and the regulator type. Here, we genetically analysed a Japanese Rhnull family and identified a novel RHAG mutation. Materials and Methods RBC samples from two family members were phenotyped using the standard serological techniques and BLOODchip Reference for the predicted phenotype. Scanning electron micrographs of red blood cells ( RBCs) were generated. All 10 RHAG exons were subjected to DNA sequencing. Results RBCs in 2 Rhnull samples did not contain Rh or Rh AG antigens. The screening tests for irregular RBC antibodies identified anti-Rh29 in 2 samples and anti-C+e in the older sister of the proband. A molecular base analysis revealed a novel c.790C>T (p.Arg263X) mutation in exon 5 of RHAG gene. Conclusion The samples with the novel c.790C>T (p.Arg263X) mutation in exon 5 of the RHAG gene were identified as regulator type. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
