Abstract

Background/Aims: A light‐cured intermediate material is useful for fabricating a hard insert and a buffer space mouthguard (H&SMG). However, it requires improvement in its mechanical properties and shock‐absorbing capacity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of two prototype light‐cured intermediate materials reinforced with glass fibers, and the impact absorption capacity and durability of H&SMGs made with the prototype intermediate materials. Materials and Methods: Two prototype materials containing long and microlength glass fibers in a light‐cured intermediate material, Innerframe LC®, for H&SMG, were fabricated and tested. A three‐point bending test was performed for evaluation of the mechanical properties. In addition, a shock absorption test was conducted using a customized pendulum impact testing machine to evaluate the H&SMGs' impact absorption capacity and durability. Results: Long and microlength glass fibers significantly improved flexural modulus and strength. H&SMGs made with these two glass fiber‐containing materials had high impact absorption capacity against both low and high impact forces, while the mouthguards made with long glass fiber materials had the best results. Conclusion: Long and microlength glass fibers with the prototype materials improved the mechanical properties of Innerframe LC® and the impact absorption capacity and durability of H&SMGs. H&SMGs made with the long glass fiber prototype materials had the best performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to propose a method on morality education through the development of the morality lessons that were foucused on life respect values. In this research, we made three materials that were concerned on life respect values and conducted three morality lessons. The results were follows. Firstly, the life respect values had three aspects, self, social and natural aspects. Secondary, these three aspects were influenced each other and developed through four steps. 28. Factors limiting the development of aquaculture : a Japanese experience

Abstract

An understanding of those factors which have limited the development of Japanese aquaculture may have some applications to the problems of aquaculture in developing countries. The history of aquaculture in Japan is reviewed from chronological, geographical, species and institutional points of view. Conclusions reached in this study reveal that throughout the history of Japan aquaculture development has been limited by variables which can be identified. The most important factor is the existence of leadership which coordinates supply and demand, environmental suitability, technical capability, legality, experience, infrastructure and social welfare incentives with economic feasibility. The development of aquaculture depends on simultaneous development of all these factors, not on the preponderance of any one of them. Within the framework of this generalization, issues pertaining to aquaculture development in developing countries could be handled by adaptation to local conditions., Prepared with funds from the Pew Memorial Trust and by the Department of Commerce, NOAA Office of Sea Grant under Grant #04-8-MOl-l49, and the Institution's Marine Policy and Ocean Management Program.

Since the passage of Public Law 94-265 - the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976 - there has been increased awareness among the public and among academicians in the problems of common property resources. The literature reviewed and summarized here deals with a number of the major issues related to common property resource management, and with the particular management technique most often mentioned for fisheries: limited entry. Abstract

The aim of this paper is to make clear the developmental alteration of human relations awareness in children's moral judgments. We created scenarios which included a dilemma about personal relations and social relations. Using these scenarios we conducted morality lessons at three levels: 7-8 years old (first level), 9-10 years old (second level) and 11-12 years old (third level). We then compared the differences in the rationales which the children used to solve the dilemma. The results were as follows. 1) Awareness of human relations broadened from self-centered to others and social relations (responsibility) in step with the development of social awareness from the first level to the third level. 2) Children in the first and second levels decided their solutions according to broader viewpoints, whereas children in the third level decided their solutions according to narrow and intimate personal relations. 3) The reason why this reversal arose was that children in the third level thought it was better to value narrow and intimate personal relations than social and not so intimate relations. This suggests that Japanese people's moral judgments depend on personal and intimate relations.

36. Development of the Method of the Moral Classes to Bring up the 'Social-conventional' Concepts in Elementary School

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to make clear the basic points of view to bring up the "social-conventional" concepts in elementary school children. According to Turiel, E., we investigated the conciousness of social rules of children in the moral classes, and analysed their opinions of social rules. The results were as follows. 1) There were different understandings about social rules between the children in the second grade and sixth grade. The second grade children understood that social rules were necessary to keep their friend's school life safely. And sixth grade children understood, adding to the above, that social rules were formed by the consensus of their opinions. 2) To bring up "social-conventional" concepts, it's needed for teachers to fit with children's development.

Abstract

To determine the efficacy of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in detecting retained stones or bile duct injury immediately after following laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), 113 patients were reviewed undergoing LC between September 1993 and September 1996. Among them, 44 patients (38.9%) underwent ERCP within postoperative day 4. ERCP was indicated as follows: 1) patients with postoperative cholestasis and/or excessive amounts of bilious drainage from the intraabdominal drain; 2) patients with discrepancies between preoperative imaging modalities and intraoperative findings; and 3) patients without either preoperative ERCP or intraoperative cholangiography (IOC). Postoperative complications detected by ERCP included bile duct injury in 2 patients, retained common bile duct (CBD) stone in 1 patient, and hepatolithiasis in 1 patient. One patient mistakenly clipped CBD not to a cystic duct, and subsequent ERCP showed interruption of the bile duct so that an emergency operation was performed. Another patient had leakage from a cystic duct-CBD junction, and subsequent ERCP showed abundant leakage of the bile duct, so that endoscopic nasobiliary drainage (ENBD) was performed. The retained CBD stone was removed by endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) following ERCP. In conclusion, ERCP immediately following LC in the selected patients on the basis of the above indications of 1) and 2) may be recommended as one useful method which detects accurately retained stones and bile duct injury.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to develop the materials and methods using in the moral classes to bring up children to think autonomous. For this aim, we practice some classes using materials including moral dilemma, and study about the important matters to make children think autonomous through the dicussion about moral values. The Result are follows. 1) The Materials including some moral values are effective. 2) In disscussion to make clear the moral issues is effective. Especially roll-taking is effective. 3) Teacher must give some concrete means to children to think about moral issues.
