Abstract

Non-native pests, climate change, and their interactions are likely to alter relationships between trees and tree-associated organisms with consequences for forest health. To understand and predict such changes, factors structuring tree-associated communities need to be determined. Here, we analysed the data consisting of records of insects and fungi collected from dormant twigs from 155 tree species at 51 botanical gardens or arboreta in 32 countries. Generalized dissimilarity models revealed similar relative importance of studied climatic, host-related and geographic factors on differences in tree-associated communities. Mean annual temperature, phylogenetic distance between hosts and geographic distance between locations were the major drivers of dissimilarities. The increasing importance of high temperatures on differences in studied communities indicate that climate change could affect tree-associated organisms directly and indirectly through host range shifts. Insect and fungal communities were more similar between closely related vs. distant hosts suggesting that host range shifts may facilitate the emergence of new pests. Moreover, dissimilarities among tree-associated communities increased with geographic distance indicating that human-mediated transport may serve as a pathway of the introductions of new pests. The results of this study highlight the need to limit the establishment of tree pests and increase the resilience of forest ecosystems to changes in climate.

7. Susceptibility of silver birch and black alder to several Phytophthora species isolated from soils in declining broadleaf forests in western Ukraine.

Abstract

In declining broadleaf forests in western Ukraine, several Phytophthora species including P. plurivora, P. bilorbang, P. polonica, P. gonapodyides and P. cactorum were recovered using soil baiting assays and identified using morphological and molecular methods. Pathogenicity tests of selected isolates were performed on black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaerth.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) to assess susceptibility of these two tree species to the newly detected Phytophthora species. Phytophthora plurivora, P. bilorbang and P. polonica showed higher pathogenicity in both alder and birch compared to the other tested Phytophthora species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International trade in plants and climate change are two of the main factors causing damaging tree pests (i.e. fungi and insects) to spread into new areas. To mitigate these risks, a large-scale assessment of tree-associated fungi and insects is needed. We present records of endophytic fungi and insects in twigs of 17 angiosperm and gymnosperm genera, from 51 locations in 32 countries worldwide. Endophytic fungi were characterized by high-throughput sequencing of 352 samples from 145 tree species in 28 countries. Insects were reared from 227 samples of 109 tree species in 18 countries and sorted into taxonomic orders and feeding guilds. Herbivorous insects were grouped into morphospecies and were identified using molecular and morphological approaches. This dataset reveals the diversity of tree-associated taxa, as it contains 12,721 fungal Amplicon Sequence Variants and 208 herbivorous insect morphospecies, sampled across broad geographic and climatic gradients and for many tree species. This dataset will facilitate applied and fundamental studies on the distribution of fungal endophytes and insects in trees.

12. Occurrence and diversity of Phytophthora species in declining broadleaf forests in western Ukraine

Abstract

In western Ukraine, forest decline and dieback of several broadleaved tree species have become increasingly evident during recent years, and surveys in some areas have shown symptoms indicative of Phytophthora infections. In this study, we aimed to determine the occurrence and diversity of Phytophthora species associated with several broadleaved tree species (Alnus glutinosa, Betula pendula, Castanea sativa, Fagus sylvatica and Quercus robur) from forest stands where dieback has been observed. Rhizosphere soil samples were collected from 14 forest stands during 2017 and 2018 and tested for the presence of Phytophthora species using morphological and molecular methods. Seven Phytophthora species (P. bilorbang, P. cactorum, P. gallica, P. gonapodyides, P. lacustris, P. plurivora and P. polonica), and two other clade six taxa were detected from the various forest types, several of which are probable agents responsible for decline. Four of the Phytophthora species (P. bilorbang, P. gallica, P. plurivora and P. polonica) have previously never been reported from broadleaf forests in Ukraine.

Abstract

Live plants are often traded in winter or early spring when the number of pests is potentially low, in part because deciduous trees lack foliage. However, the pests that may be associated with traded dormant plant material are likely to be largely unknown. Pest risk assessments can only be performed for known pest species and it is therefore important to identify potential pests before they are moved to a new area. In addition, it is difficult to predict whether introduced pests, even if already well known, may shift host after their arrival. Several studies attempted to estimate the likelihood of host shifts using literature about known pest-host associations, but the number of pests in these studies was often limited and the data were unlikely collected in the same place and at the same time. To overcome these problems, we performed a global study which aimed at detecting potential insect pests and fungal pathogens on congeneric native and exotic woody plant species that belong to six studied tree genera. Sampling was done simultaneously in 33 countries around the world following a common sampling protocol. At each location, twenty 50 cm long, dormant twigs were collected from each tree species and kept in containers with water at room temperature. Emerged insects were collected and identified based on morphology and DNA barcoding of the mDNA COI region. Fungal DNA was extracted from pooled buds, twig parts and needles for species identification using a metabarcoding approach based on the rDNA ITS region. Here, we present preliminary results of this study and discuss them in the context of pest risk assessment.

22. Box Tree Moth Cydalima perspectalis as a Threat to the Native Populations of Buxus colchica in Republic of Georgia.

Abstract

An invasive phytophagous insect, the Cydalima perspectalis (Walker, 1859) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), new to the fauna of the region of the Caucasus Mountains, was detected in boxwood plantations of various species in the region of Krasnodar Krai. In 2013, larvae of the moth caused lethal damage to artificial plantations of boxwood in the Greater Sochi area and Novorossiysk area in southern Russia. In summer and autumn 2015, 48 and 13 boxwood study sites respectively in the natural Buxus colchica (Pojark) forests were examined in six regions (out of nine) in the Republic of Georgia. The substantial damage caused by C. perspectalis feeding on boxwood leaves in native boxwood forests was discovered in four different regions in the western part of the Republic of Georgia: Imereti, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Guria and Autonomous Republic of Adjara. Today, the box tree moth is known to occur at several locations in the Black Sea coastal region of the Caucasus Mountains. 24. THREATS OF FORESTS IN THE UKRAINIAN CARPATHIANS -- CURRENT AND FUTURE STATE.

Abstract

The important economic and environmental issue for Carpathian region is drying of spruce forests. The largest areas of drying plantations have been found in the spruce forests derivatives created in the territories of fir, beech and oak forests. In early 2012 the following areas of drying spruce stands derivatives in state forests of the Carpathian region were identified: in Lviv Region -- 8.7 thousand ha (43.5% of the spruce stands derivatives), in Ivano-Frankivsk Region -- 6.0 thousand ha (15.3%), in Transkarpatia Region -- 3.8 thousand ha (13.5%) and in Chernivtsi Region -- 0.7 thousand ha (6.8%). The processes of dying of spruce forests derivatives are affected by root rots -- the area of their pockets for the last 10 years have been increased by 2-3 times. The processes of this drying are accelerated by xylophagus insects, especially the bark beetle. A tendency for their areas to be increased is observed. Results of research on the plots show that complete drying tree stands in spruce stands derivatives process may last from 5-6 to 1-2 years. In fact, it makes a significant mortality threat of spruce tree stands derivatives for the next 20-30 years. In recent years, drying processes have also been found in the zone of native spruce tree forests (at altitudes of above 1 000 m). The largest areas of drying in native spruce tree stands have been recorded in Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk Regions -- 9.7 and 5.2 thousand ha. Furthermore, the main reasons that accelerate weakening and drying of spruce forests are as follows: weather conditions in recent years (high temperatures in April and June, lack of precipitation, sudden fluctuations of the weather), lack of sanitary and health measures, ineffective fighting with bark beetle and other xylophagus insects. Moreover, a new threat to the Carpathians is the spreading of Phythophthora diseases, bacterial and cancer diseases and root rot in beech tree forests stands. Hence, according to preliminary data, in Ivano-Frankivsk Region more than 1.5 ha of beech forest with signs of Phythophthora diseases have been revealed. However, the degree of damage and area of spread disease in these forest types of Carpathians requires a more detailed study. On the other hand, the situation is complicated by the fact that the Phytophthora species affect plants for planting in the nurseries and consequently that threatens the future of forests.
