We report results of searches for charmless hadronic B meson decays to pseudoscalar(pi^+-,K^+-,Pi^0 or Ks^0)-vector(Rho, K* or Omega) final states. Using 9.7 million BBbar pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we report first observation of B^- --> Pi^-Rho^0, B^0 --> Pi^+-Rho^-+ and B^- --> Pi^-Omega, which are expected to be dominated by hadronic b --> u transitions. The measured branching fractions are (10.4+3.3-3.4+-2.1)x10^-6, (27.6+8.4-7.4+-4.2)x10^-6 and (11.3+3.3-2.9+-1.4)x10^-6, respectively. Branching fraction upper limits are set for all the other decay modes investigated., 10 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

We present a new determination of the Ds decay constant, f_{Ds} using 5 million continuum charm events obtained with the CLEO II detector. Our value is derived from our new measured ratio of widths for Ds -> mu nu/Ds -> phi pi of 0.173+/- 0.021 +/- 0.031. Taking the branching ratio for Ds -> phi pi as (3.6 +/- 0.9)% from the PDG, we extract f_{Ds} = (280 +/- 17 +/- 25 +/- 34){MeV}. We compare this result with various model calculations., 23 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

Using 13.4 $fb^{-1}$ of data collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have observed 300 events for the two-photon production of ground-state pseudo-scalar charmonium in the decay $\eta_c$ -> $K_S K^{\mp} \pi^{\pm}$. We have measured the $\eta_c$ mass to be (2980.4 +- 2.3 (stat) +- 0.6 (sys)) MeV and its full width as (27.0 +- 5.8 (stat) +- 1.4 (sys)) MeV. We have determined the two-photon partial width of the $\eta_c$ meson to be (7.6 +- 0.8 (stat) +- 0.4 (sys) +- 2.3 (br)) keV, with the last uncertainty associated with the decay branching fraction.

Using the CLEO~II detector, we have measured the differential cross sections for exclusive two-photon production of light pseudoscalar mesons $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta^{\prime}$. From our measurements we have obtained the form factors associated with the electromagnetic transitions $\gamma^*\gamma$ $\to$ meson. We have measured these form factors in the momentum transfer ranges from 1.5 to 9, 20, and 30 GeV$^2$ for $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta^{\prime}$, respectively, and have made comparisons to various theoretical predictions., Comment: 30 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

Background The 12-lead electrocardiographic screening for the prevention of sudden cardiac death in young competitive athletes is not cost-effective and thus not routinely recommended. We investigate whether a less expensive wireless electrocardiographic transmission device can be used to screen for the prevention of sudden cardiac death in this population. Methods During pre-participation screening, twenty college football players underwent two electrocardiograms: a conventional 12-lead electrocardiogram and a wireless 9-lead electrocardiogram. We compared several electrocardiographic parameters (QRS duration, left ventricular hypertrophy using the Cornell voltage criteria and the Sokolow–Lyon criteria, ST deviation and corrected QT interval) to determine the correlation. Results The QRS duration, left ventricular hypertrophy using the Cornell voltage criteria and the Sokolow–Lyon criteria and corrected QT interval exhibited significant correlation between the two types of electrocardiograms (correlation coefficient 0.878, 0.630, 0.770 and 0.847, respectively with P values of 0.01, 0.003, 0.01 and 0.01, respectively). ST deviation in V1 was weakly correlated between the two types of electrocardiograms without statistical significance (correlation coefficient 0.360 with a P value of 0.119). Conclusions Our newly developed wireless 9-lead electrocardiogram demonstrated significant correlations with a conventional 12-lead electrocardiogram in terms of QRS duration, left ventricular hypertrophy and corrected QT interval.

Introduction: Routine 12-lead electrocardiogram screening for the prevention of sudden cardiac death in young athletes is not recommended due to the enormous cost per life saved. The application of less expensive electrocardiographic devices has not been investigated. Hypothesis: The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the utility of a new 3-lead wireless electrocardiographic device for the pre-participation screening of young competitive athletes. Methods: Twenty-seven college football players were enrolled in this study. During the pre-participation screening sessions, each player underwent evaluation using a conventional 12-lead electrocardiogram and a new 3-lead electrocardiogram coupled to our wireless electrocardiographic device. The new 3-lead electrocardiography is a compact device that yields high quality electrocardiographic signals. We compared several electrocardiographic parameters (QRS duration, QRS amplitude, left ventricular hypertrophy, ST deviation and corrected QT interval) using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: The QRS duration, QRS amplitude and corrected QT interval values exhibited significant correlation between the two types of electrocardiograms (correlation coefficient 0.723, 0.537 and 0.734, respectively with P value of 0.01, 0.004 and 0.01, respectively). ST deviation in V1 was weakly correlated with ST deviation in lead Z without statistical significance (correlation coefficient 0.227 with P value of 0.256). Assessment of left ventricular hypertrophy using the Cornell voltage or Sokolow-Lyon criteria and average QRS amplitude also revealed weak correlation without statistical significance (correlation coefficient 0.221 and 0.246, respectively with P value of 0.268 and 0.216, respectively). Conclusions: Our newly developed 3-lead electrocardiogram results correlated well with those of a conventional 12-lead electrocardiogram in terms of QRS duration, QRS amplitude and corrected QT interval. Thus, the 3-lead electrocardiogram might represent a useful screening tool for the prevention of sudden cardiac death in young competitive athletes.

Utilizing the full CLEO-c data sample of 818 pb − 1 of e + e - data taken at the ψ ( 3770 ) resonance, we update our measurements of absolute hadronic branching fractions of charged and neutral D mesons. We previously reported results from subsets of these data. Using a double tag technique we obtain branching fractions for three D 0 and six D + modes, including the reference branching fractions B ( D 0 → K - π + ) = ( 3.934 ± 0.021 ± 0.061 ) % and B ( D + → K - π + π + ) = ( 9.224 ± 0.059 ± 0.157 ) % . The uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. In these measurements we include the effects of final-state radiation by allowing for additional unobserved photons in the final state, and the systematic errors include our estimates of the uncertainties of these effects. Furthermore, using an independent measurement of the luminosity, we obtain the cross sections σ ( e + e - → D 0 D ¯ 0 ) = ( 3.607 ± 0.017 ± 0.056 ) nb and σ ( e + e - → D + D - ) = ( 2.882 ± 0.018 ± 0.042 ) nb at a center of mass energy, E cm = 3774 ± 1 MeV .

The tracking subsystem of the CLEO-III Trigger consists of separate axial and stereo tracking pattern-matching modules, whose products are time-aligned and spatially correlated to provide pipelined trigger information every 42 ns with a latency of approximately 2 /spl mu/s. This paper describes the pipelined signal processing and pattern recognition schemes used by the axial and stereo electronics to provide the information necessary to make trigger decisions. Extensive use of in-system field programmable gate arrays support path finding and timing information extraction.

The calorimetry subsystem of the CLEO-III Trigger incorporates both analog and digital electronics to provide pipelined trigger information every 42 ns with a latency of approximately 2.5 /spl mu/s. This paper describes the pipelined signal-processing and pattern-recognition schemes used to provide calorimeter information to the experiment trigger with somewhat greater emphasis on the analog components of the system. Analog processing is employed to address the quantization error caused by split energy deposition in adjacent calorimeter cells, and digital field programmable gate arrays are used extensively to filter and categorize the calorimeter energy topology. Timing, geographical, and energy information are all available for use in the calorimeter trigger.

We have measured the charge asymmetry in like-sign dilepton yields from B(0)B*(0) meson decays using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find a(0)(ll) identical with[N(l(+)l(+))-N(l(-)l(-))]/[N(l(+)l(+))+N(l(-)l(-))] = +0.013+/-0.050+/-0.005. We combine this result with a previous, independent measurement and obtain Re(epsilon(B))/(1+ the absolute value of epsilon(B)(2)) = +0.0035+/-0.0103+/-0.0015 (uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively) for the CP impurity parameter, epsilon(B).

The spectrum of charmed baryons consisting of a charmed quark and two light quarks denoted by Ac and σc baryons were investigated. The sample used in the investigation corresponds to an integrated luminosity 13.7/fb from the data taken on the Y(4S) resonance and in the continuum at energies just below the Y(4S). A broad state with an invariant mass roughly above 480 MeV above that of the Ac baryon and a narrow state with an invariant mass of 596 MeV above the Ac mass were found.

We have studied two-body charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into the final states straight phiK and phiK(*). Using 9.7 million BB pairs collected with the CLEO II detector, we observe the decays B- --> phiK- and B0--> phiK(*0) with the following branching fractions: B(B--->phiK-) = (5.5(+2.1)(-1.8)+/-0.6)x10(-6) and B(B0--> phiK(*0)) = (11.5(+4.5+1.8)(-3.7-1.7))x10(-6). We also see evidence for the decays B0-->phiK0 and B---> phiK(*-). However, since the statistical significance is not overwhelming for these modes, we determine upper limits of

We report the first observation of exclusive decays of the type B-->D(*)N_NX, where N is a nucleon. Using a sample of 9.7x10(6)B_B pairs collected with the CLEO detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we measure the branching fractions B(B0-->D(*-)p_p pi(+)) = (6.5(+1.3)(-1.2)+/-1.0)x10(-4) and B(B0-->D(*-)p_n) = (14.5(+3.4)(-3.0)+/-2.7)x10(-4). Antineutrons are identified by their annihilation in the CsI electromagnetic calorimeter.

We analyze 9.7x10(6) B_B pairs recorded with the CLEO detector to determine the production ratio of charged to neutral B-meson pairs produced at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We measure the rates for B0-->J/psiK((*)0) and B+-->J/psiK((*)+) decays and use the world-average B-meson lifetime ratio to extract the relative widths f(+-) / f(00) = gamma(Upsilon(4S)-->B+B-) / gamma(Upsilon(4S)-->B0 B-0)) = 1.04+/-0.07(stat)+/-0.04(syst). With the assumption that f(+-)+f(00) = 1, we obtain f(00) = 0.49+/-0.02(stat)+/-0.01(syst) and f(+-) = 0.51+/-0.02(stat)+/-0.01(syst). This production ratio and its uncertainty apply to all exclusive B-meson branching fractions measured at the Upsilon(4S) resonance.

Using data recorded with the CLEO II and CLEO II.V detector configurations at the Cornell Electron Storage Rings, we report the first observation and mass measurement of the ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{c}^{*+}$ charmed baryon, and an updated measurement of the mass of the ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{c}^{+}$ baryon. We find $M({\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{c}^{*+})\ensuremath{-}M({\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}^{+})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(231.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.0)\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$, and $M({\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{c}^{+})\ensuremath{-}M({\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}^{+})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(166.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3)\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively.

We have studied charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into two-body final states with kaons and pions and observe three new processes with the following branching fractions: B(B{yields}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -})=(4.3{sup +1.6}{sub -1.4}{+-}0.5)x10{sup -6} , B(B{yields}K{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}) =(14.6{sup +5.9+2.4}{sub -5.1-3.3})x 10{sup -6} , and B(B{yields}K{sup {+-}}{pi}{sup 0} )=(11.6{sup +3.0+1.4}{sub -2.7-1.3}) x10{sup -6} . We also update our previous measurements for the decays B{yields}K{sup {+-}}{pi}{sup {+-}} and B{sup {+-}}{yields}K{sup 0}{pi}{sup {+-}} . (c) 2000 The American Physical Society.

We search for CP-violating asymmetries (Acp) in the B meson decays to K+- pi-+, K+- pi0, Ks pi+-, K+- eta', and omega pi+-. Using 9.66 million Upsilon(4S) decays collected with the CLEO detector, the statistical precision on Acp is in the range of \pm 0.12 to \pm 0.25 depending on decay mode. While CP-violating asymmetries of up to \pm 0.5 are possible within the Standard Model, the measured asymmetries are consistent with zero in all five decay modes studied., 10 pages, 3 figures

We report results of a search for the rare radiative decay B(bar sign){sup 0}{yields}D{sup *0} {gamma} . Using 9.66x10{sup 6} BB(bar sign) meson pairs collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we set an upper limit on the branching ratio for this decay of 5.0x10{sup -5} at 90% C.L. This provides evidence that the anomalous enhancement is absent in W -exchange processes and that weak radiative B decays are dominated by the short-distance b{yields}s{gamma} mechanism in the standard model. We present the first observation of the decay B{yields}J/{psi}{phi}K . Using 9.6x10{sup 6} BB meson pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we have observed ten fully reconstructed B{yields}J/{psi}{phi}K candidates, whereas the estimated background is 0.5{+-}0.2 event. We obtain a branching fraction of B(B{yields}J/{psi}{phi}K)=( 8.8{sup +3.5}{sub -3.0}[stat] {+-}1.3[syst])x10{sup -5} . This is the first observed B meson decay requiring the creation of an additional ss quark pair. (c) 2000 The American Physical Society.

Using a sample of $3.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $B$-meson decays collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have studied ${B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{0}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ and ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ decays, where ${\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ can be either ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ or ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. We distinguish $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$ from other $B$ semileptonic decays by examining the net momentum and energy of the particles recoiling against $D\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\ell}$ pairs. We find $\ensuremath{\Gamma}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(14.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.2){\mathrm{ns}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and derive branching fractions for ${B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{0}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ and ${\overline{B}}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{D}^{+}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ of $(2.32\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.17\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.20)%$ and $(2.20\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.16\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.19)%$, respectively, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. We also investigate the $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$ form factor and the implication of the result for $|{V}_{\mathrm{cb}}|$.

We have observed four fully reconstructed B{sup 0}{r_arrow}D{sup {asterisk}+}D{sup {asterisk}{minus}} candidates in 5.8{times}10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(4S){r_arrow}B{ovr B} decays recorded with the CLEO detector. The background is estimated to be 0.31{plus_minus}0.10 thinspthinspevents. The probability that the background could produce four or more signal candidates with the observed distribution among D{sup {asterisk}+} and D{sup {asterisk}{minus}} decay modes is 1.1{times}10{sup {minus}4} . The measured decay rate, B(B{sup 0}{r_arrow}D{sup {asterisk}+}D{sup {asterisk} {minus}})=[6.2{sup +4.0}{sub {minus}2.9}( stat){plus_minus}1.0(syst) ]{times}10{sup {minus}4} , is large enough for this decay mode to be of interest for the measurement of a time-dependent CP asymmetry. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

We report the first observation of two narrow charmed strange baryons decaying to {Xi}{sup +}{sub c}{gamma} and {Xi}{sup 0}{sub c}{gamma} , respectively, using data from the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We interpret the observed signals as the {Xi}{sup +{prime}}{sub c}thinsp( c{l_brace}su{r_brace}) and {Xi}{sup 0{prime}}{sub c}thinsp( c{l_brace}sd{r_brace}) , the symmetric partners of the well-established antisymmetric {Xi}{sup +}{sub c}thinsp(c[ su]) and {Xi}{sup 0}{sub c}thinsp(c[ sd]) . The mass differences M({Xi}{sup +{prime}}{sub c}){minus}M( {Xi}{sup +}{sub c}) and M({Xi}{sup 0{prime}}{sub c}){minus}M( {Xi}{sup 0}{sub c}) have been measured to be 107.8{plus_minus}1.7{plus_minus}2.5 and 107.0{plus_minus}1.4{plus_minus}2.5 MeV /c{sup 2} , respectively. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society }

No evidence for a signal is found in 4.77fb−1 of data and a 95% C.L. upper limit on [τγγBπ+π−]fJ(2220) of 2.5 eV is set. If this result is combined with the BES Collaboration's measurement of fJ(2220)→π+π− in radiative J/Ψ decay and the recent CLEO result for [τγγBK0SK0S]fJ(2220), a 95% C.L. lower limit on the stickiness of 102 is obtained. This result for the stickiness provides further support for a substantial neutral parton content in the fJ(2220). © 1998 The American Physical Society.

We have searched for two-body charmless decays of B mesons to purely hadronic exclusive final states including $\omega$ or $\phi$ mesons using data collected with the CLEO II detector. With this sample of $6.6 \times 10^6$ B mesons we observe a signal for the $\omega K^+$ final state, and measure a branching fraction of B($B^+ \to \omega K^+$) = 1.5 +0.7 -0.6 +-0.2 $\times 10^{-5}$. We also observe some evidence for the $\phi K^*$ final state, and upper limits are given for 22 other decay modes. These results provide the opportunity for studies of theoretical models and physical parameters.

We have observed a signal for the decay D^(*+)→D^+γ at a significance of 4 standard deviations. From the measured branching ratio B(D^(*+)→D^+γ)/B(D^(*+)→D^+π^0) = 0.055±0.014±0.010 we find B(D^(*+)→D^+γ) = 0.017±0.004±0.003, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report the highest precision determination of the remaining D^(*+) branching fractions.

In a sample of 6.6×10^6 produced B mesons we have observed decays B→η′K, with branching fractions B(B^+→η′K^+) = (6.5_(-1.4)^(+1.5)±0.9)×10^(-5) and B(B^0→η′K^0) = (4.7_(-2.0)^(+2.7)±0.9)×10^(-5). We have searched with comparable sensitivity for 17 related decays to final states containing an η or η′ meson accompanied by a single particle or low-lying resonance. Our upper limits for these constrain theoretical interpretations of the B→η′K signal.

We present a measurement of the absolute branching fraction for D^0→K^-π^+ using the reconstruction of the decay chain B →D^(*+)Xl^-ν , D^(*+)→D^0π^+ where only the lepton and the low-momentum pion from the D^(*+) are detected. With data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined B(D^0→K^-π^+) = [3.81±0.15(stat)±0.16(syst)]%.

We have searched for the decay $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}_{s1}^{+}(2536)X$ and measured an upper limit for the inclusive branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}_{s1}^{+}X)l0.96%$ at the 90% confidence level. This limit is small compared with the total expected $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}^{(*)}{D}^{(*)}\mathrm{KX}$ rate. Assuming factorization, the ${D}_{s1}^{+}$ decay constant is constrained to be ${f}_{{D}_{s1}^{+}}$114 MeV at the 90% confidence level, at least 2.5 times smaller than that of ${D}_{s}^{+}$.

The decays ϒ(4S)→BB , followed by B→D^*π and D^*→Dπ, permit reconstruction of all kinematic quantities that describe the sequence without reconstruction of the D, with reasonably low backgrounds. Using an integrated e^+e^- luminosity of 3.1 fb^(-1) accumulated at the ϒ(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, we report measurements of B(B ^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (2.81±0.11±0.21±0.05)×10^(-3) and B(B-→D^*0π^-) = (4.34±0.33±0.34±0.18)×10^(-3).

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have made a measurement of R≡σ(e^+e^-→hadrons)/σ(e^+e^-→μ^+μ^-)=3.56±0.01±0.07 at √s=10.52 GeV. This implies a value for the strong coupling constant of α_s(10.52 GeV)=0.20±0.01±0.06, or α_s(MZ)=0.13±0.005±0.03.

The first observation of the decay K{sup +}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup +}{gamma}{gamma} is reported. A total of 31 events was observed with an estimated background of 5.1{plus_minus}3.3 events in the {pi}{sup +} momentum range from 100 to 180 MeV/{ital c}. The corresponding partial branching ratio, B(K{sup +}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup +}{gamma}{gamma} ,100 MeV/c{lt}P{sub {pi}{sup +} }{lt}180 MeV/c) , is [6.0{plus_minus}1.5(stat){plus_minus}0.7 (syst)]{times}10{sup {minus}7} . No K{sup +}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup +}{gamma}{gamma} decay was observed in the {pi}{sup +} momentum region greater than 215 MeV/{ital c}. The observed {pi}{sup +} momentum spectrum is compared with the predictions of chiral perturbation theory. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present the first full angular analysis in the color-suppressed modes B{sup 0}{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *0} and B{sup +}{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *+}. This leads to a complete determination of the decay amplitudes of these modes including the longitudinal polarization {Gamma}{sub L}/{Gamma}=0.52{plus_minus}0.07{plus_minus}0.04 and the P wave component {vert_bar}P{vert_bar}{sup 2}=0.16{plus_minus}0.08{plus_minus}0.04. In addition, we update the branching fractions for B{r_arrow}J/{psi}K and B{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *}. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

We use the CLEO detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage ring, CESR, to search for the two-photon production of the glueball candidate f{sub J}(2220) in its decay to K{sub s}K{sub s} . We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the K{sub s}K{sub s} branching fraction, ({Gamma}{sub {gamma}{gamma}}B{sub K{sub s}K{sub s}}){sub f{sub J(2220) }} . We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling. This limit on stickiness indicates that the f{sub J}(2220) has substantial glueball content. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Using data collected in the region of the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the CLEO II detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring CESR, we present the first observation of B mesons decaying into the charmed strange baryons Xi_c0 and Xi_c+. We find 79 +/- 27 Xi_c0 and 125 +/- 28 Xi_c+ candidates from B decays, leading to product branching fractions of BR(Bbar -> Xi_c0 X)BR(Xi_c0 -> Xi- pi+) = (0.144 +/- 0.048 +/- 0.021) x 10^-3 and BR(Bbar -> Xi_c+ X)BR(Xi_c+ -> Xi- pi+ pi+) = (0.453 +/- 0.096 +0.085-0.065) x 10^-3.

We have searched for the rare decay of the eta meson $\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}$ using the CLEO II detector. The $\eta$'s were produced in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions with 10 GeV center-of-mass energy at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). We find with 90% confidence the upper limit on the branching fraction $B(\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}) < 7.7\times 10^{-5}$. The application of conventional elementary particle theory to this decay predicts a branching fraction of about $10^{-9}$.

A search for the decay of the tau lepton to seven charged pions and one or zero pizero mesons was performed using the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The analysis uses 232.2 fb-1 of data at center-of-mass energies on or near the Y(4S) resonance. We observe 24 events with an expected background of 21.6+-1.3 events. Without evidence for a signal, we calculate an upper limit of BR(tau- --> 4pi- 3pi+ (pizero) nu_tau) 4pi- 3pi+ nu_tau and tau- --> 4pi- 3pi+ pizero nu_tau.

Using data collected in the region of the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the CLEO-II detector, they report on the first observation of exclusive decays of the B meson to final states with a charmed baryon. They have measured the branching fractions {Beta}(B{sup -} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}{pi}{sup -}) = (0.62{sub -0.20}{sup +0.23} {+-} 0.11 {+-} 0.10) x 10{sup -3} and {Beta}({bar B}{sup 0} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = (1.33{sub -0.42}{sup +0.46} {+-} 0.31 {+-} 0.21) x 10{sup -3}. In addition, they report upper limits for final states of the form {bar B} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}(n{pi}) and {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}(n{pi}){pi}{sup 0} where (n{pi}) denotes up to four charged pions.

We have observed new channels for $\ensuremath{\tau}$ decays with an $\ensuremath{\eta}$ in the final state. We study 3-prong tau decays, using the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ decay modes and 1-prong decays with two ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$'s using the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ channel. The measured branching fractions are $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({3.4}_{\ensuremath{-}0.5}^{+0.6}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}2{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(1.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$. We observe clear evidence for ${f}_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$ substructure and measure $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{f}_{1}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({5.8}_{\ensuremath{-}1.3}^{+1.4}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.8)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$. We have also searched for ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}(958)$ production and obtain 90% C.L. upper limits $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l7.4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ and $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l8.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$.

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage ring CESR we study the two-photon production of {Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}, making the first observation of {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}. We present the cross section for {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{bar {Lambda}} as a function of the {gamma}{gamma} center of mass energy and compare it to that predicted by the quark-diquark model. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we determine the ratio R{sub chrg} for the mean charged multiplicity observed in {Upsilon}(1S){r_arrow}gg{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}, to the mean charged multiplicity observed in e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}q{bar q}{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}. We find R{sub chrg}{equivalent_to}{l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}/{l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}=1.04 {plus_minus}0.02(stat){plus_minus}0.05(syst) for jet-jet masses less than 7 GeV. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

We have searched for the decays $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ in a sample of $2.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ charged $B$ decays collected with the CLEO II detector. In the muon channel, we observe no candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma})l5.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ at the 90% confidence level. In the electron channel, we observe five candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma})l2.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at the 90% confidence level.

We report a measurement of the magnitude of the {nu}{sub {tau}} helicity from {tau}-pair events taken with the CLEO detector at the CESR electron-positron storage ring. Events in which each {tau} undergoes the decay {tau}{r_arrow}h{nu}, with h a charged pion or kaon, are analyzed for energy correlations between the daughter hadrons, yielding {vert_bar}{xi}{sub h}{vert_bar} = 1.03{plus_minus}0.06{plus_minus}0.04, with the first error statistical and the second systematic. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
