Dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) is a crucial step for multiresidue analysis used to remove matrix components from extracts. This purification prevents contamination of instrumental equipment and improves method selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Therefore, a clean-up step is recommended, but an over-purified extract can lead to analyte loss due to adsorption to the sorbent. This study provides a systematic comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the well-established dSPE sorbents PSA, GCB, and C18 and the novel dSPE sorbents chitin, chitosan, multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), and Z-Sep® (zirconium-based sorbent). They were tested regarding their clean-up capacity by visual inspection, UV, and GC-MS measurements. The recovery rates of 98 analytes, including pesticides, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and emerging environmental pollutants with a broad range of physicochemical properties, were determined by GC-MS/MS. Experiments were performed with five different matrices, commonly used in food analysis (spinach, orange, avocado, salmon, and bovine liver). Overall, Z-Sep® was the best sorbent regarding clean-up capacity, reducing matrix components to the greatest extent with a median of 50% in UV and GC-MS measurements, while MWCNTs had the largest impact on analyte recovery, with 14 analytes showing recoveries below 70%. AbstractAn efficient and innovative clean-up method was developed for the rapid screening of β-agonists residues in porcine urine by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). 1% Aqueous ammonium hydroxide was shown to be effective for the removal of matrix components as a wash step in solid phase extraction (SPE). A significant reduction in matrix effects was observed with values from 81% to 108%. Furthermore, under the optimized conditions, the recoveries of all analytes at 0.3, 0.6, and 3.0 μg/L ranged from 70.1% to 109.0% when employing the external standard method for quantitative analysis, rather than relying on matrix-matched standards or isotope-labelled internal standards to mitigate matrix effects. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) were 0.1 μg/L and 0.3 μg/L, respectively. Matrix effects are a major concern in liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of pesticide residues. In this work, a novel and efficient lipophilicity-matched chromatographic separation strategy was developed to improve the separation efficiency on an alkyl bonded phase chromatographic column and reduce matrix effects. An ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method based on this strategy was established to minimize matrix effects for the determination of triazole fungicides. The samples were cleaned-up with dispersive solid phase extraction and separated on a chromatographic column with similar lipophilicity to the fungicides. The results showed that the proposed method effectively minimized the matrix effects and improved the separation. The matrix effects of 21 fungicides ranged from −8.3% to 4.7%. Moreover, the average recoveries were between 91.4% and 108.1% using solvent calibration for quantification, and the limits of quantitation were between 0.5 and 3.5 μg/kg. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in improving the chromatographic efficiency. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a powerful elemental detection and quantification technique widely employed across various disciplines, including science, engineering, construction, and medicine. This comprehensive review focuses on the recent advancements and challenges in utilizing LIBS for corrosion detection, specifically emphasizing reinforced concrete structures. While LIBS has demonstrated its reliability in corrosion assessment, its adoption as a standardized method is not yet widespread. Identifying and quantifying contaminant elements in targeted structures are crucial steps in corrosion investigation. This review reveals how LIBS can effectively extract elemental contaminants and their relative intensities from samples, establishing correlations with the degree of corrosion. Given that corrosion rate is time-dependent, rapid and accurate techniques like LIBS are essential for timely measurements, enabling multiple instantaneous assessments of contaminant levels. Various calibration techniques and accuracy-enhancing methods are discussed, including calibration curves, chemometrics, and dual-pulsed LIBS approaches for measuring constituent elements. Furthermore, a range of applications for LIBS in concrete technology, cement paste analysis, soil investigations, fluid analysis, and quality control in cement factories are explored. By providing an in-depth understanding of LIBS capabilities and its potential as a reliable and rapid approach for corrosion rate detection in different materials, this study offers valuable insights to researchers, engineers, and industry professionals in pursuing effective corrosion assessment methodologies. Ciguatoxins (CTXs) are neurotoxic marine biotoxins capable of contaminating marine organisms. Approximately 30 CTX analogues have been described; however, only a few have been documented in ciguatera poisoning (CP) outbreaks. Detecting CTXs from complex matrices at CP-relevant concentrations (<1 µg per kg seafood tissue) is analytically challenging. Analytical standards for CTXs are rare. Even after multi-step sample preparation (including liquid–liquid partition, defatting, and solid-phase extraction (SPE)), extracts can contain undesirable co-eluting matrix components. These limitations can exacerbate discrepancies between results obtained by LC-MS/MS and the N2a-bioassay, which are two common CTX detection methods. Herein, a rapid and simple fractionation method, based on normal phase SPE (silica), is demonstrated. Target CTXs were eluted using solvent mixtures of ascending polarity, passed through the column, and separated into eight fractions. To challenge the method, extracts with eleven naturally incurred CTX analogues among different structural CTX groups (e.g., CTX3C, CTX4A, and C-CTX group) were used. The most complex tissue matrix tested (viscera) was improved the most for extract purity and CTX detection, enhancing the correlation between LC-MS/MS and N2a-bioassay results. This workflow represents an advancement for characterizing CTXs in seafood products and CP outbreaks, irrespective of the responsible CTX analogue and where standards are lacking. The deformulation stage of original drug products, which includes the quantification of critical excipients, is crucial for the successful development of generic drug products of solid dosage form. Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) belongs to the group of critical excipients due to its influence on the bioavailability of drugs, such as metformin. The purpose of this work is to carry out a feasibility study in order to develop a simple, economical, and robust analytical method for the quantification of SLS in metformin-containing tablets after their dissolution in water. Firstly, SLS is extracted with chloroform in acidic conditions, followed by the addition of methylene blue (MB) in order to form a SLS-MB ion pair, which is then measured photometrically at a wavelength of 651 nm. Additionally, interference from matrix components (excipients and APIs) was assessed, and it was found that metformin also forms a blue complex; therefore, this specific extraction method was developed. Other matrix components did not interfere with SLS determination. This method shows a well-estimated precision of 3.3% and accuracy of 5%, a calibration linearity of R2 = 0.99990, and a working range of 0.38 µg/mL to 10 µg/mL of SLS in water. The midpoint of the calibration graph corresponds to the concentration of SLS obtained by dissolving a single tablet in 1 L of water. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a spectroscopic analytic technique with great application potential because of its unique advantages for online/in-situ detection. However, due to the spatially inhomogeneity and drastically temporal varying nature of its emission source, the laser-induced plasma, it is difficult to find or hard to generate an appropriate spatiotemporal window for high repeatable signal collection with lower matrix effects. The quantification results of traditional physical principle based calibration model are unsatisfactory since these models were not able to compensate for complicate matrix effects as well as signal fluctuation. Machine learning is an emerging approach, which can intelligently correlated the complex LIBS spectral data with its qualitative or/and quantitative composition by establishing multivariate regression models with greater potential to reduce the impacts of signal fluctuation and matrix effects, therefore achieving relatively better qualitative and quantitative performance. In this review, the progress of machine learning application in LIBS is summarized from two main aspects: i) Pre-processing data for machine learning model, including spectral selection, variable reconstruction, and denoising to improve qualitative/quantitative performance; ii) Machine learning methods for better quantification performance with reduction of the impact of matrix effect as well as LIBS spectra fluctuations. The review also points out the issues that researchers need to address in their future research on improving the performance of LIBS analysis using machine learning algorithms, such as restrictions on training data, the disconnect between physical principles and algorithms, the low generalization ability and massive data processing ability of the model. We summarize the method of hydrodynamic approximation for weakly ionized plasmas developed with Klimontovich in 1962 and give a generalization to many—component systems using Onsagers matrix theory and including dispersion effects. We develop the conductivity theory of complex plasma and electrolyte mixtures based on the model of charged hard spheres with given non‐additive contact distances, including frequency‐dependent electric fields. These generalizations are made with the aim to allow applications to complex natural systems as atmospheric plasmas and seawater. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) measurements of δ18O in nine chromite (Mg, Fe)(Al, Cr, Fe)2O4 samples (Cr# = 0.58–0.79, Mg# = 0.39–0.72) from chromitites and harzburgite have confirmed their intra‐ and inter‐grain isotopic homogeneity, making them suitable reference materials for in situ analysis. The SIMS measurements of the oxygen isotopic composition of these chromites exhibit a range of instrumental mass fractionation (IMF) as a function of the end‐member compositions of the chromite, particularly the magnetite (FeOFe2O3) and spinel (MgAl2O4) components. Functional relationships have been developed to correct for IMF over the compositional range XMag = 0.01 to 0.05, and XSpl = 0.14 to 0.22. The distribution of Mg isotopes in minerals is becoming increasingly relevant in Earth science. Usually, they are determined by dissolving mineral concentrates and, after purifying Mg with ion exchange resins, analysing the resulting solutions by TIMS or, most often, MC‐ICP‐MS. When applied to individual minerals, these methods are slow and prone to contamination from impurities in the concentrates, inconveniences that may be avoided using spot analysis techniques such as LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS or SIMS, albeit at the price of a large instrumental mass fractionation (IMF) and isobaric interferences, most prominent in the former. Here, we studied the potential of the multi‐collector SHRIMP II ion microprobe for measuring Mg isotopes in Fe‐Mg silicates and oxides. We found that, when corrected for the divergence of the Mg ion paths within the sample chamber caused by the Earth's magnetic field, the SHRIMP's IMF overwhelmingly depends on the mineral species, and the effects of variable chemical composition are negligible. We propose that the IMF is caused by the force constant difference, ∆F, between "hard" and "soft" bonds linking the ions of the studied element to the mineral lattice. Given that ∆F is a constant for each mineral species, we calculated IMF‐correction factors for the most common Mg‐bearing minerals. The thus‐calculated correction factors permit the analysis in the same session, and with reasonable accuracy (within ~ 0.3‰ of the δ26Mg determined by SN‐MC‐ICP‐MS analyses of concentrates), of samples from different mineral species, facilitating the application of Mg isotopes to terrestrial studies. The Chemical Vapor Transport (CVT) Reaction is an important and efficient method of synthesizing pyrite crystals. CVT-grown pyrites have been comprehensively investigated for physical properties and elemental chemical compositions. However, the isotopic compositions have not been investigated. In this study, four series of pyrite crystals (PY3, PY4, PY5, and PY6) were synthesized using the CVT method, with PY5 undoped and the others doped with nickel. The synthesized crystals were characterized qualitatively with confocal laser Raman microspectroscopy and quantitatively by EMPA, LA-ICP-MS, SIMS, and IRMS. The synthetic products are irregular polycrystalline aggregates or cubic and octahedral monocrystals, with characteristic Raman bands at ~344 cm−1, ~380 cm−1/377 cm−1, ~427 cm−1/430 cm−1, and S/Fe weight and atomic ratios of 1.15–1.17 and 2.01–2.04, respectively, indicative of pyrite. The pyrites contain traces of inevitable impurities such as Si and Br. The nickel contents of Ni-doped pyrites are heterogeneous, 39–27 300 ppm for PY3, 24–21 700 ppm for PY4, and 57–2610 ppm for PY6. By comparison, the δ34S values obtained by SIMS are relatively homogeneous (PY3 = 17.3 ± 0.9‰, PY4 = 17.7 ± 0.8‰, PY5 = 17.9 ± 0.8‰, PY6 = 17.7 ± 0.6‰, ±2SD), and are consistent with IRMS δ34S values (17.8 ± 0.2‰ for PY3, 18.3 ± 0.9‰ for PY4, 18.2 ± 0.3‰ for PY5, 18.1 ± 0.1‰ for PY6, ±2SD). The homogeneity of 34S/32S suggests that CVT has the potential to synthesize reference materials for the determination of sulfur isotopic composition of pyrite using in situ techniques. Additionally, we also investigated the matrix effects of nickel in pyrite on the measurement of 34S/32S by SIMS, and a preliminary equation of Δ34S (‰) = −0.59 × Ni (wt%)0.27 (R2 = 0.3), where Δ34S is the discrepancy between in situ and bulk δ34S values, was derived for calibration. The production of nutraceuticals is a growing trend, as many consumers consider them an important part of the modern active lifestyle. Others rely on the use of nutraceuticals instead of prescribing pharmaceuticals to improve their health more naturally. One of the major concerns in the nutraceutical industry is the potential presence of contaminants. Even low concentrations of contaminant residues can be harmful, so analytical methods that are sensitive at ultratrace levels are needed. Dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction method combined with fast gas chromatography and mass spectrometry was developed for the inspection of pesticide residues in Carmelite drops. The most suitable recoveries are presented when the alcohol content is fixed at 20% in Carmelite drops. The method was validated; the linearity, limits of detection/quantification, the method accuracy and precision were obtained. The complex nutraceutical matrix causes significant complications in quantitative analysis; therefore, the main target of the work was placed on studying the effects of the matrix on the correct expression of the resulting concentration of contaminants in different types of samples. An in-depth study of matrix factors was carried out, and its relationship with the content of potential interferents from the medicinal products as well as other components added during the drops' production was discussed. Matrix effects are a recent remarkable feature in quantitative LC-MS/MS analysis. In this work, the matrix effects of a multiclass mixture of 46 analytes - pesticides, pharmaceuticals and perfluoroalkylsubstances in different types of natural groundwater were studied. Groundwater samples were spiked with different standards from different chemical groups and determined by direct injection and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Matrix effects were assessed by matrix factors calculated using the slope ratio technique. Groundwater samples were sampled in different boreholes in several places in Slovakia. The relationship with the various detected inorganic parameters was investigated and discussed. Most of the studied analytes showed negative matrix effects. Some analytes showed weak negative or positive matrix effects. The results show that average matrix factors obtained from different sampling sites are not a reliable tool and matrix effects need to be monitored depending on the sampling location. Only weak or no correlation of the matrix factors with the determined inorganic parameters was found. Geochemical composition of boreholes samples was determined and the differences in the macrochemical composition of the samples was evaluated. Model samples of ultrapure water enriched with NaCl, Na2CO3 and NaNO3 at various concentration levels were tested and the matrix effects were not observed. Other content of sample than cations Na+ were responsible for the matrix effects. It was found that the most affected compounds are sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, metamitron, chloridazon and also caffeine. The results show that the detailed study is suitable as a tool for a deeper understanding of matrix effects in different types of groundwater. We present an analytical method to detect and quantify residues of currently used pesticides (CUPs), which include 31 active ingredients (ai) and seven transformation products (TPs) in tropical and agricultural soils of Cuba. Ten isotopically labeled analogous compounds served as internal standards (IL-IS). The novelty of this research is the inclusion of different tropical soils type scarcely studied for CUPs and TPs, based on the QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) method, followed by chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. All figures of merit proved to be satisfactory according to SANTE guidelines 2020 and 2021. Matrix effects (ME) calculated by the external standard method were significant (|ME| > 20% for almost all compounds; grand mean ± standard deviation (STD) 104 ± 108%) in all soils. The internal standard method compensated ME to non-significant levels (8 ± 50%), even for analytes with a non-structure identical IL-IS (STD, 13 ± 57%). Repeatability (relative standard deviation, RSDr) and reproducibility (RSDR) for skeletic regosol (SR) were 7.5 ± 2.8% and 11.7 ± 4.7%, respectively. Absolute (quantified for 11 analytes with structure identical IL-IS) and relative recovery from SR was 92 ± 13% (mean ± STD) and 90 ± 12%, respectively. Limits of quantification for SR ranged from 0.1 to 10 ng/g, except metalaxyl and oxyfluorfen (25 ng/g each). Linearity of matrix-matched (MM) calibration curves (5 to 100 ng/g) had an R2 of ≥ 0.99 for all soils and almost all analytes. The method was successfully applied to 30 real soil samples. The thorough investigation of nanoplastics (NPs) in aqueous environments requires efficient and expeditious quantitative analytical methods that are sensitive to environmentally relevant NP concentrations and convenient to employ. Optical analysis-based quantitative methods have been acknowledged as effective and rapid approaches for quantifying NP concentrations in laboratory-scale studies. Herein, we compared three commonly used optical response indicators, namely fluorescence intensity (FI), ultraviolet absorbance, and turbidity, to assess their performance in quantifying NPs. Furthermore, orthogonal experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of various water quality parameters on the preferred indicator-based quantification method. The results revealed that FI exhibits the highest correlation coefficient (> 0.99) with NP concentration. Notably, the limit of quantification (LOQ) for various types of NPs is exceptionally low, ranging from 0.0089 to 0.0584 mg/L in ultrapure water, well below environmentally relevant concentrations. Despite variations in water quality parameters such as pH, salinity, suspended solids (SS), and humic acid, a robust relationship between detectable FI and NP concentration was identified. However, an increased matrix, especially SS in water samples, results in an enhanced LOQ for NPs. Nevertheless, the quantitative method remains applicable in real water bodies, especially in drinking water, with NP LOQ as low as 0.0157–0.0711 mg/L. This exceeds the previously reported detectable concentration for 100 nm NPs at 40 µg/mL using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. This study confirms the potential of FI as a reliable indicator for the rapid quantification of NPs in aqueous environments, offering substantial advantages in terms of both convenience and cost-effectiveness. Analysis of V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Ag, Cd, Ba, and Pb in fruit juices was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) after simple 50-fold dilution in 1% (v/v) HNO3–0.5% (v/v) HCl–5% (v/v) ethanol. Ethanol was added to overwhelm native organic components and dominate matrix effects. A universal calibration curve was built based on a likewise treated reagent standard series. This new matrix overcompensation calibration (MOC) strategy was developed to effectively compensated for matrix effects of carbon origin and achieved quantitative (92.5–118.8%) recoveries comparable to those by standard addition calibration (92.1–117.8%) and microwave-aided digestion (99.3–116.8%). The LODs were 0.528, 0.204, 0.195, and 2.07 ng mL−1 for toxic elements As, Cd, Pb, and Ni, respectively, adequate for their regulatory monitoring. Ge, Rh, Tb, and Ir were used as internal standards. MOC renders a calibration curve universally applicable to any clear fruit juices of diversified crop, geographic, and manufacturer origins resulting in cost saving and enhanced productivity. Matrix effects can significantly impede the accuracy, sensitivity, and reliability of separation techniques presenting a formidable challenge to the analytical process. It is crucial to address matrix effects to achieve accurate and precise measurements in complex matrices. The multifaceted nature of matrix effects which can be influenced by factors such as target analyte, sample preparation protocol, composition, and choice of instrument necessitates a pragmatic approach when analyzing complex matrices. This review aims to highlight common challenges associated with matrix effects throughout the entire analytical process with emphasis on gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry, and sample preparation techniques. These techniques are susceptible to matrix effects that could lead to ion suppression/enhancement or impact the analyte signal at various stages of the analytical workflow. The assessment, quantification, and mitigation of matrix effects are necessary in developing any analytical method. Strategies can be implemented to reduce or eliminate the matrix effect by changing the type of ionization, improving extraction and clean‐up methods, optimization of chromatography conditions, and corrective calibration methods. While development of an effective strategy to completely mitigate matrix effects remains elusive, an integrated approach that combines sample preparation, analytical extraction, and effective instrumental analysis remains the most promising avenue for identifying and resolving matrix effects. This review focuses on the recent progress and challenges in applying LIBS for geotechnical engineering applications. The paper also discusses the widely employed calibration-free LIBS methods such as chemometrics, artificial neural networks (ANN), and support vector machine (SVM) for quantifying constituent elements. The various applications of LIBS in geosciences, such as in mineralogy, soil studies, rocks investigations, and fluid analysis, have also been presented. Despite the robustness of LIBS in soil studies, it is hitherto challenging to investigate some soil physical parameters. In general, chemical applications such as contamination detection and nutrients are based on detecting certain elements or ions. On the other hand, physical and mechanical applications such as soil texture and soil humification degree may require the usage of a correlation between the chemical elements and the desired parameters. This work, therefore, summarizes how LIBS works with different materials and its current uses in determining the physical or mechanical properties of soils and presents the possibilities of this technology in the field of Geotechnical Engineering. In this work, a novel reversed phase/cation exchange mixed-mode sorbent for solid phase extraction (SPE) was synthesized by modifying the mesoporous material MCM-41 with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and octadecyltrimethoxysilane (C18 TMS) followed by succinic acid glycoside (SAA) in two steps. Various SPE parameters were optimized, and an analytical method was developed for the determination of six aminoglycosides (AGs) in milk by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) using an amide column for chromatographic separation. The results of structural characterization demonstrated that the synthesized material had a large specific surface area, uniform pore size, and modified functional groups, exhibiting strong adsorption capacity and selectivity for AGs. The bifunctionalized material significantly improved matrix interference of milk compared to the carboxylated material. The proposed method exhibited good linearity for the six AGs in the concentration range of 5–500 ng/mL with correlation coefficients of 0.992 7–0.999 5. The limits of detection (LOD) achieved using this method were 0.30–2.50 ng/mL. The average recoveries ranged from 74.3% to 107% with relative standard deviation (RSD) between 2.6% and 15.7%. The material is characterized by low cost, simple preparation and good operability as a SPE filler. It can be extended to the detection of AGs in other food or agricultural samples.

The classification of pancreatic cyst fluids can provide a basis for the early detection of pancreatic cancer while eliminating unnecessary procedures. A candidate biomarker, gastricsin (pepsin C), was found to be present in potentially malignant mucinous pancreatic cyst fluids. A gastricsin activity assay using a magnetic bead-based platform has been developed using immobilized peptide substrates selective for gastricsin bearing a dimeric rhodamine dye. The unique dye structure allows quantitation of enzyme-cleaved product by both fluorescence and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The performance of this assay was compared with ELISA assays of pepsinogen C and the standard of care, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), in the same clinical sample cohort. A retrospective cohort of mucinous (n = 40) and non-mucinous (n = 29) classes of pancreatic cyst fluid samples were analyzed using the new protease activity assay. For both assay detection modes, successful differentiation of mucinous and non-mucinous cyst fluid was achieved using 1 µL clinical samples. The activity-based assays in combination with CEA exhibit optimal sensitivity and specificity of 87% and 93%, respectively. The use of this gastricsin activity assay requires a minimal volume of clinical specimen, offers a rapid assay time, and shows improvements in the differentiation of mucinous and non-mucinous cysts using an accurate standardized readout of product formation, all without interfering with the clinical standard of care.

The production of nutraceuticals is a growing trend, as many consumers consider them an important part of the modern active lifestyle. Others rely on the use of nutraceuticals instead of prescribing pharmaceuticals to improve their health more naturally. One of the major concerns in the nutraceutical industry is the potential presence of contaminants. Even low concentrations of contaminant residues can be harmful, so analytical methods that are sensitive at ultratrace levels are needed. Dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction method combined with fast gas chromatography and mass spectrometry was developed for the inspection of pesticide residues in Carmelite drops. The most suitable recoveries are presented when the alcohol content is fixed at 20% in Carmelite drops. The method was validated; the linearity, limits of detection/quantification, the method accuracy and precision were obtained. The complex nutraceutical matrix causes significant complications in quantitative analysis; therefore, the main target of the work was placed on studying the effects of the matrix on the correct expression of the resulting concentration of contaminants in different types of samples. An in-depth study of matrix factors was carried out, and its relationship with the content of potential interferents from the medicinal products as well as other components added during the drops’ production was discussed. Related medicinal plant-derived nutraceuticals were tested, the method was applied for real-life samples, and positive findings are herein reported.

Food safety is a critical issue that is closely related to people's health and safety. As a simple, rapid, and sensitive detection technique, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology has significant potential for food safety detection. Recently, researchers have shown a growing interest in utilizing silent region molecules for SERS analysis. These molecules exhibit significant Raman scattering peaks in the cellular Raman silent region between 1800 and 2800 cm−1 avoiding overlapping with the SERS spectrum of biological matrices in the range 600–1800 cm−1, which could effectively circumvent matrix effects and improve the SERS accuracy. In this review, the application of silent region molecules-based SERS analytical technique for food safety detection is introduced, detection strategies including label-free detection and labeled detection are discussed, and recent applications of SERS analysis technology based on molecules containing alkyne and nitrile groups, as well as Prussian blue (PB) in the detection of pesticides, mycotoxins, metal ions, and foodborne pathogens are highlighted. This review aims to draw the attention to the silent region molecules-based SERS analytical technique and to provide theoretical support for its further applications in food safety detection. A method is developed for determining concentrations in Zeeman electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry based on the conversion of the transformation function of an atomic absorption spectrometer into a calibration dependence adapted to the matrix of the analyzed sample. The transformation function is expressed as a one-parameter saturation function, which is an integral optical characteristic of the spectrometer, independent of the composition of the analyzed sample. The algorithm of the method includes measurement of the analytical signals of an analyzed sample and a same sample with a known additive of the analyte and calculation of the matrix coefficient and the desired concentration of the analyte in the analyzed sample from these signals. The adaptive calibration method is tested for As, Au, Cd, Cu, Mo, Pd, Pb, Mo, Pd, Pb, Ti, V. The relative systematic error in determining the concentration of an element in the range of measuring the absorbance of atomic vapor does not exceed 10%. Consumption of low levels of egg already can evoke harmful physiological responses in humans in those allergic to eggs. By detection of egg in food products, using Egg ELISA kits to determine its unintended presence, food producers can respond to avoid potential safety or quality risks of their products. Selection of an ELISA kit fit for the issue at hand is challenging due to, amongst others, lack of information on assay performances with specified matrices. In this study, performances of seven commercial egg ELISA kits are compared for nine different relevant matrices: cookie, chocolate, pasta, dressing, stock cube, wine, vegetable drink and milk, ice cream and meat/meat replacers. The presence of egg was unified for all ELISA kits to mg total egg protein kg−1 food product. In every matrix, kit performances for recovery, intra- and interassay were compared, and also processing is accounted for by determination of egg in incurred samples. All seven kits were able to detect egg qualitatively at the VITAL3 ED01 level of 0.2 mg total egg protein and the corresponding relevant portion size for each matrix. For quantitative results, each ELISA kit showed an increase in detected egg concentration with increased egg levels and performed within the set criteria for recovery for the cookie, chocolate, stock cube and wine. For pasta, vegetable drink and milk, ice cream, and salad dressing, recovery of egg was within the set criteria for at least 4 ELISA kits. Most challenging matrices were meat/meat replacers, showing high matrix effects which could not be explained by the possible egg presence in the cognate blank. Only one ELISA kit was able to recover egg within the set criteria for the meat/meat replacer matrix. Results enable food industry to choose for ELISA kits suitable for egg detection in the matrix of interest.

Screening for antibiotic residues in animal-derived food is largely done by in vitro assays. However, a non-negligible number of positive screening results (sum values) remains with no confirmation by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-sophisticated mass spectrometers. To investigate this inconsistency, a hyphenated strategy was sought that combines on the same surface planar chromatography−multi-imaging with antibacterial planar bioassays. Strong antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was revealed in four animal-derived food extracts (pig muscle, cow milk, chicken eggs, and honey), which, however, were previously proven to be veterinary drug residue-free. This antibacterial effect was strong, extremely exceeding the effect from a mixture of 81 veterinary drugs spiked at 300 µg/kg, which is about 3 times the maximum residue limit of most of these veterinary drugs. The unknown antibacterial zones were online-eluted to high-resolution mass spectrometry to obtain molecular formulas. Endogenous fatty acids and lipids were identified to be responsible for the strong antibacterial effects, confirmed by co-analyzed reference compounds. These results resolved the methodological inconsistency but also question the prevailing understanding: Current food safety only based on target analysis of regulated antibiotic residues neglects consumer protection when the much stronger antibacterial impact of food on the human microbiome is overlooked.

Total‐reflection X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF) is one of the analytical methods for the rapid and cost‐efficient multielemental analysis of solid and liquid objects. However, the method has some issues in the quantitative analysis due to the possible matrix effects. Since alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages contain a high percentage of carbohydrates (especially sucrose), ethanol, and other organic compounds, the issues of matrix effects are significant and should be studied. Basically, absorption effects appear in the determination of "light" elements as P, S, K, and Ca. This article showed the capabilities of TXRF applying to the determination of "light" elements in alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages using two sample preparation techniques: direct analysis and acid digestion. Due to the lack of certified reference materials for beverages, the model solutions with a matrix of 5% sugar in water were prepared according to the developed experimental design. The absorption effects that influenced the accuracy of TXRF analysis of beverages were demonstrated and quantitatively estimated. The quantification procedures for direct analysis of beverages were optimized using external calibration. The real samples of wine, beer, juice, and soft drink were analyzed using the offered approaches, and results of TXRF were compared to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. This paper proposes a novel approach to implement an internal standard (IS) correction in single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP ICP-MS), as exemplified for the characterization of Au nanoparticles (NPs) in complex matrices. This approach is based on the use of the mass spectrometer (quadrupole) in bandpass mode, enhancing the sensitivity for the monitoring of AuNPs while also allowing for the detection of PtNPs in the same measurement run, such that they can serve as an internal standard. The performance of the method developed was proved for three different matrices: pure water, a 5 g L−1 NaCl water solution, and another water solution containing 2.5% (m/v) tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH)/0.1% Triton X-100. It was observed that matrix-effects impacted both the sensitivity of the NPs and their transport efficiencies. To circumvent this problem, two methods were used to determine the TE: the particle size method for sizing and the dynamic mass flow method for the determination of the particle number concentration (PNC). This fact, together with the use of the IS, enabled us to attain accurate results in all cases, both for sizing and for the PNC determination. Additionally, the use of the bandpass mode provides additional flexibility for this characterization, as it is possible to easily tune the sensitivity achieved for each NP type to ensure that their distributions are sufficiently resolved. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vaping products) have become increasingly popular, with recent increases in use associated with closed systems delivering higher concentrations of nicotine. Most vaping products designed as an alternative to combustible cigarettes contain nicotine. A number of published studies have examined the reported concentrations of nicotine in vaping liquids (e-liquids) and found discrepancies between labelled and measured levels. Some discrepancy can also be explained by the lack of stability of nicotine in these types of products. Recently, a chemical analysis method for the quantitative determination of low and high levels of nicotine in vaping liquids was developed. This method uses dilution with acetonitrile prior to analysis with gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in single ion monitoring mode (SIM). The developed method was validated using a laboratory-prepared vaping liquid as well as commercially available, nicotine-free products fortified with nicotine in the laboratory. The method detection limit (MDL) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) for nicotine were calculated to be 0.002 mg/mL and 0.006 mg/mL, respectively. The newly developed method was applied to quantify nicotine in commercially available vaping liquids of various flavour profiles and across a wide range of nicotine concentrations, including those with nicotine salts. Furthermore, a subset of vaping liquids were analyzed to elucidate nicotine stability in various product subtypes. After a period of six months of accelerated storage to mimic one year, the overall mean percent of the original nicotine concentration remaining in the salt-based vaping products was 85% (minimum 64%, maximum 99%) while in the free-base nicotine products it was 74% (minimum 31%, maximum 106%). Nicotine stability in vaping liquids was found to be influenced by the nicotine form (pH) of formulation and its chemical composition. Non-targeted, qualitative analysis of chemical composition of vaping products showed that most constituents were identified and found to be remaining in the products following stability trials; however, three new compounds were tentatively identified in some vaping liquids at the end of the stability trials. Stability studies and the accurate quantitation of nicotine in vaping products can help inform product standards related to the safety, quality and utility of vaping products as a smoking cessation tool. With the popularity of multi-residue pesticide analysis based on quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) cleanup and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS), matching optimal matrix-matched calibration protocols and LC-MS conditions to reduce matrix effects (MEs) has become a crucial task for analysts in their routines. However, dozens to hundreds of pesticide analytes in a single run generate increasingly multi-dimensional ME data, requiring appropriate tools to handle these data sets. Therefore, we established an ME analysis strategy by drawing on analytical thinking and tools from metabolomics analysis. Using this, matrix species-induced and mass spectrometry-induced systematic ME variations were distinguished, and pesticides contributed to the variations were scanned out. A simultaneous weakening of MEs on 24 pesticides in 32 different matrices was achieved using the time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) scan under the information-dependent acquisition (IDA) mode of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS), compared to multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) scanning by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Bay leaf, ginger, rosemary, Amomum tsao-ko, Sichuan pepper, cilantro, Houttuynia cordata, and garlic sprout showed enhanced signal suppression in the MRM scan for 105 differential MRM transitions for 42 pesticides and in IDA mode for 33 pesticides, respectively. β2-agonists are a class of synthetic sympathomimetic drugs with acute poisoning effects if consumed as residues in foods. To improve the efficiency of sample preparation and to overcome matrix-dependent signal suppression in the quantitative analysis of four β2-agonists (clenbuterol, ractopamine, salbutamol, and terbutaline) residues in fermented ham, an enzyme digestion coupled cation exchange purification method for sample preparation was established using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Enzymatic digests were subject to cleanup treatment on three different solid phase extraction (SPE) columns and a polymer-based strong cation resin (SCR) cartridge containing sulfonic resin was found to be optimal compared with silica-based sulfonic acid and polymer sulfonic acid resins based SPEs. The analytes were investigated over the linear range of 0.5 to 10.0 μg/kg with recovery rates of 76.0–102.0%, and a relative standard deviation of 1.8–13.3% (n = 6). The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.1 μg/kg and 0.3 μg/kg, respectively. This newly developed method was applied to the detection of β2-agonist residues in 50 commercial ham products and only one sample was found to contain β2-agonist residues (clenbuterol at 15.2 µg/kg). One of the most discussed topics concerns the sample preparation before the analysis and, therefore, all the operations necessary to eliminate the interferents, clean up the specimens, and extract the analytes of interest, reducing the matrix effect. This review highlights the fundamental steps in the treatment of postmortem samples used in forensic analysis. Through critical literature research, it was possible to choose among the countless works that could provide a general overview of the state-of-the-art in this field. Different biological matrices have been considered; blood and urine (the traditional biological fluids) are used to investigate the presence of substances that may have caused death, whilst other body fluids, such as bile and oral fluids, are still under discussion for their usability (and suitability). In the second part of the review, all the solid matrices obtained after autopsy were further divided into conventional and unconventional matrices to facilitate proper understanding. The interactions between soil microorganisms and soil minerals play a crucial role in the formation and evolution of minerals and the stability of soil aggregates. Due to the heterogeneity and diversity of the soil environment, the under-standing of the functions of bacterial biofilms in soil minerals at the microscale is limited. A soil mineral-bacterial biofilm system was used as a model in this study, and it was analyzed by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) to acquire molecular level information. Static culture in multi-wells and dynamic flow-cell culture in microfluidics of biofilms were investigated. Our results show that more characteristic molecules of biofilms can be observed in SIMS spectra of the flow-cell culture. In contrast, biofilm signature peaks are buried under the mineral components in SIMS spectra in the static culture case. Spectral overlay was used in peak selection prior to performing Principal component analysis (PCA). Comparisons of the PCA results between the static and flow-cell culture show more pronounced molecular features and higher loadings of organic peaks of the dynamic cultured specimens. For example, fatty acids secreted from bacterial biofilm extracellular polymeric substance are likely to be responsible for biofilm dispersal due to mineral treatment up to 48 h. Such findings suggest that the use of microfluidic cells to dynamically culture biofilms be a more suitable method for reducing the matrix effect arisen from the growth medium and minerals as a perturbation fac-tor for improved spectral and multivariate analysis of complex mass spectral data in ToF-SIMS. These results show that the interaction mechanism between biofilms and soil minerals at the molecular level can be better studied using the flow-cell culture and advanced mass spectral imaging techniques like ToF-SIMS.

ObjectiveTo study the matrix effects （MEs） and the compensation measures of 15 quinolones （QNs） determination in animal derived food by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry （HPLC-MS/MS） .MethodsFish， pork and chicken as typical substrates were tested by post-extraction spiking method and dynamic multiple reaction monitoring to evaluate matrix effects.ResultsMore than 60% of the quinolones suffered moderate and strong matrix effects in the three samples. Enrofloxacin， pefloxacin and dalfloxacin had strongly matrix enhancement effect， and fleroxacin was strongly inhibited. Pretreatment methods， matrix species， compound species and mass concentration were the main factors affecting the matrix effect of quinolones.ConclusionIn the process of daily monitoring which the pretreatment method specified in the test standard cannot be changed casually， matrix matching standard curve， isotope internal standard， diluted sample and improving chromatography resolution combined with dynamic multi reaction monitoring could effectively compensate the matrix effect of quinolones and improve the reliability and accuracy of the detection results.

In nitrogen microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry, the intensities of analytical lines with low excitation energies increase in the presence of easily ionized elements. To compensate for this effect, we proposed to add additional matrix elements with ionization potentials below 6 eV (Rb, Ba, Sm, La, Eu, In, Al, and Ga) to sample solutions and calibration solutions in the determination of alkali and alkaline-earth metals. The concentration of an additional element, 75–100 mg/L, was selected based on the constancy of the analytical signals of analytes and the magnesium ratio Mg(II)/Mg(I). This concentration is insufficient for a significant change in temperature or electron density; that is, the added element is not a spectral buffer. The procedure was applied to the analysis of pore waters of bottom sediments of Lake Bolshoy Bagan (alkaline type of mineralization); the accuracy of the analysis was confirmed by the spiking method. The determination of trace-level pharmaceuticals in water is generally performed using liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry, which is susceptible to interference from non-target substances, such as natural organic matter (NOM). In this study, the interference of NOM on the determination of 20 typical pharmaceuticals using solid-phase extraction followed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC–ESI-tqMS) was investigated with a combined consideration of recoveries, matrix effects, and process efficiencies. The results showed that the recoveries of most pharmaceuticals were not significantly affected by NOM concentrations of 1–50 mg/L. The matrix effects and process efficiencies decreased linearly with increasing logarithmic NOM concentrations, and the changes in matrix effects and process efficiencies both exhibited negative linear correlations with the pharmaceuticals' hydrophobicity (logKow). This result indicated that the determination of hydrophilic pharmaceuticals suffered from more severe NOM interference, as NOM entered the ESI source together with hydrophilic pharmaceuticals after UPLC separation and subsequently weakened the ionization efficiency of these pharmaceuticals. According to the correlations between logKow and the changes in matrix effects and process efficiencies, the pharmaceutical determination in positive/negative ESI modes with logKow ≤ 3.80/4.27 is considered to be significantly affected by NOM, accompanied by > 20% changes in matrix effects and process efficiencies. Solid phase extraction combined with ultra‐performance liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry was developed for the simultaneous determination of 31 endocrine‐disrupting chemicals in fish plasma. The strong anion exchange/primary‐secondary amine cartridge and the mixed cation exchange cartridge were used in tandem instead of using a single mixed cation exchange cartridge for sample purification. Suitable eluents were selected for each of the two cartridges: 4.5% ammonia/acetonitrile solution for cartridges in tandem and acetone:n‐hexane (V:V = 3:7) for the strong anion exchange/primary‐secondary amine cartridge alone. With this optimized Solid phase extraction method, the recoveries of 31 endocrine disrupting chemicals were between 43.0% and 131.3%, the method detection limits were 0.45 to 1.35 ng/ml, and the limits of quantitation were 1.50–4.50 ng/ml. The innovative pretreatment method that connects two cartridges in tandem is well positioned to mitigate the matrix effects of fish plasma, thereby improving the accuracy of multiclass endocrine‐disrupting chemicals determination. Abstract A method based on isotope dilution liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC/MS/MS) was established as a candidate reference method for accurate determination of neonicotinoid pesticides, imidacloprid, clothianidin, and thiamethoxam in kimchi cabbage. Their deuterated isotopes, imidacloprid-d 4, chlothianidin-d 3, and thiamethoxam-d 4 were used as internal standards. The combination of HLB and Carb solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges was used to clean-up kimchi cabbage extracts. The ID-LC/MS/MS conditions were optimized with fortified kimchi cabbage samples for validation. Imidacloprid in the ERM-BC403 cucumber sample (0.627 ± 0.026) mg/kg was analyzed with the developed method, and the measured value (0.604 ± 0.028) mg/kg agreed within their uncertainties. The developed method was employed for the certification of kimchi cabbage reference materials prepared in this laboratory. The measured values of imidacloprid, clothianidin, and thiamethoxam are (0.860 ± 0.020) mg/kg, (0.524 ± 0.012) mg/kg, (0.787 ± 0.014) mg/kg, respectively. Protein-protected metal nanoclusters (MNCs) represent a new class of highly photoluminescent nanomaterials that have wide applications. Suitable reaction conditions combining protein and metal precursors can produce a vast range of different NC sizes (i.e. different number of metal atoms). The average number of metal atoms per protein can be determined by mass spectrometry (MS). MS coupled with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) presents a number of advantages such as detection with high sensitivity of nanoclusters with high molecular weights. Although many protein-protected MNCs have been characterized by MALDI-MS, a large dispersion in the number of metal atoms has been reported mainly due to sample preparation. In this work, we optimized the protocols for negative and positive ion detection mode as a general MALDI-MS sample preparation method for protein-protected MNCs (bovine serum albumin and lysozyme and with gold and silver). Negative and positive ion mode detection was compared, showing that negative ion mode detection in MALDI-MS can also be used with acidic matrices. Obvious matrix effects on ion signals and peak positions by MALDI-MS were observed. The average metal numbers of MNCs embedded in proteins are different depending on the MALDI matrix. Single-particle inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry (spICP-TOFMS) is a high-throughput method for the multiplexed analysis of nanoparticles (NPs). However, matrix interferences are a significant challenge that must be overcome for accurate NP sizing and number concentration determination. In online microdroplet calibration, multi-element droplet standards are mixed with nebulized aerosols from a NP-containing sample in a dual-sample introduction system before entering the ICP. Microdroplet standards are used to determine absolute sensitivities and calibrate the mass amount(s) of analyte element(s) in particle events. A plasma-uptake standard is added to NP-containing samples to account for variations in the nebulization and transport efficiency of aerosols into the plasma, which are used in the determination of particle number concentrations (PNCs). Since the microdroplets experience the same plasma conditions as analyte NPs, this creates a matrix-matched calibration. We studied the efficacy of online microdroplet calibration for the quantification of NPs in three organic matrices: ethanol, acetone, and acetonitrile. Organic solvents can cause a pronounced increase in sample uptake and cause plasma-related signal attenuation for nanoparticle measurements. Online microdroplet calibration corrects for both effects without the use of nanoparticle standards. Our results demonstrate accurate NP sizing and PNC determinations in organic matrices up to 98% (v/v), even when these matrices caused signals to be attenuated up to 35-times and nebulizer transport efficiencies to be up to four-times higher than that of a pure water matrix. This paper proposes a novel approach to implement an internal standard (IS) correction in single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP ICP-MS), as exemplified for the characterization of Au nanoparticles (NPs) in complex matrices. This approach is based on the use of the mass spectrometer (quadrupole) in bandpass mode, enhancing the sensitivity for the monitoring of AuNPs while also allowing for the detection of PtNPs in the same measurement run, such that they can serve as an internal standard. The performance of the method developed was proved for three different matrices: pure water, a 5 g L−1 NaCl water solution, and another water solution containing 2.5% (m/v) tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH)/0.1% Triton X-100. It was observed that matrix-effects impacted both the sensitivity of the NPs and their transport efficiencies. To circumvent this problem, two methods were used to determine the TE: the particle size method for sizing and the dynamic mass flow method for the determination of the particle number concentration (PNC). This fact, together with the use of the IS, enabled us to attain accurate results in all cases, both for sizing and for the PNC determination. Additionally, the use of the bandpass mode provides additional flexibility for this characterization, as it is possible to easily tune the sensitivity achieved for each NP type to ensure that their distributions are sufficiently resolved.

We studied a possibility of determining fluorine in rocks by the X-ray fluorescence spectrometry using pressed pellets as emitters. The most important factors affecting the results of fluorine determination are considered, namely, the covering effect , systematic and random errors due to measuring the intensity of the fluorine line and sample preparation, the dependence of the FKα line intensity on the matrix composition of the sample and the compound containing this element. The results were evaluated in terms of permissible errors. The use of a single calibration equation for rocks with various fluorine-containing minerals is inapplicable to pressed pellets. Secondary ion mass spectrometry techniques are used to study trace elements in organic samples where matrix compositions vary spatially. This study was conducted to develop calibrations for lithium content and lithium isotope measurements in kerogen. Known concentrations of Li ions (6Li and 7Li) were implanted into organic polymers, with a range of H/C and O/C ratios similar to kerogen, along with glassy carbon (SPI Glas‐22) and silicate glass (NIST SRM 612). Results show that Li content calibration factors (K*) are similar for carbonaceous samples when analysed using a 5 kV secondary ion accelerating voltage. Using a 9 kV secondary ion accelerating voltage, K* factors are negatively correlated with the sample O content, changing ~ 30% between 0 and 15 oxygen atomic %. Thus, to avoid the matrix effect related to O content, using a 5 kV secondary ion accelerating voltage is best for quantification of Li contents based on 7Li+/12C+ ratios. Under these analytical conditions, Li ppm (atomic) = (132 (± 8) × 7Li+/12C+) × 12C atom fraction of the sample measured. Lithium isotope ratio measurements of SPI Glas‐22 and NIST SRM 612 are within uncertainty; however, the organic polymer samples as a group show a 10‰ higher δ7Li than NIST SRM 612.
