Drawing on interviews with staff from Language Supplementary Schools (LSS) in Manchester (UK), we discuss the emergence of makeshift ideologies whereby actors seek to legitimise choices and policies of heritage language transmission in the diaspora setting. Actors discuss the use of regional and vernacular varieties, the consideration given to pupils' multilingual repertoires, and the use of the majority language (English) as 'scaffold'. Conscious that such practices potentially clash with the schools' expected mission statements and prevailing ideological dispositions, actors seek to justify them. They do this with reference to changes in setting and attitudes, which they position along time and place axes, comparing origin countries with the diaspora reality, thereby forging new language narratives as a 'diasporic stance'. We consider the discursive tools and actions of talks that constitute descriptions, explanations, justifications, and their interplay in actors' efforts to share their perspective on practices and the attitudes that accompany them. The study shows how ideologies regarding the particular diasporic situation are shifting, and the relevance of pluralistic language repertoires within it. Methodologically, the study suggests that ideologies are not just discursive dimensions, rather they are constructed and communicated discursively, allowing us to trace their emergence using semiotic and discourse-analytical tools.

The paper provides an analysis of the impact of the values of cutting tool inclination strategies and angles measured in the parallel and perpendicular to feed direction, radial depth of cut and feedrate on the surface roughness. The workpiece was made of the AISI H13 steel, hardness 50 HRC, and was machined using a ball-nosed end mill with CBN edges. The research methodology involved experiments conducted based on the Taguchi orthogonal array, optimization of parameters with the use of Taguchi method and process modelling using neural networks. Thanks to the use of neural networks, the analyses were performed for various levels of machining efficiency, obtained as a result of different radial depths of cut and feedrates. In order to obtain mathematical models well-describing strongly nonlinear impact of the cutting tool inclination strategies and angles, a separate neural network learned for each tool inclination strategy. The prediction of results was made using a set of neural networks. The analyses and experiments resulted in surfaces with very low Ra parameter of 0.16 μm and mathematical models with a good fit to the experimental data. Values of the cutting tool inclination angle that allow obtaining the surface of specific surface roughness were specified for various levels of machining performance.

Aims International Medical Graduate (IMG) doctors make up a significant proportion of the British medical workforce. In 2022, 26% of doctors in training graduated outside the UK. Psychiatry was one of the most frequently chosen specialties by IMGs. Doctors joining the NHS face several challenges such as differential attainment and discrimination. Increasing recognition of such issues led to the recent publication of a national guidance for IMG induction. In 2021, CNWL appointed an IMG lead to design and implement a comprehensive induction and ongoing support programme for all IMG doctors joining the trust. The first induction for new IMG core trainees consisted of six sessions and included a mixture of communication skills workshops and tutorials. It started in February 2021 and was delivered over four weeks. Since then, the programme has run twice a year with each intake of new core trainee doctors. Methods Nineteen CNWL IMG core trainees who participated in the induction programme between 2021 and 2023 were invited to complete an online survey. The data was collected between December 2023 and January 2024. It consisted of Likert scale ratings of the content of the programme, its relevance, and its impact on trainees’ confidence. The usefulness of each session was also measured. Trainees were encouraged to provide free-text comments with suggestions for improvements. Results Sixteen out of nineteen trainees submitted responses. There was a consensus amongst all trainees that the induction covered essential topics. Fifteen out of sixteen participants felt more confident in their role after the sessions. The first communication skills workshop covering history taking and mental state examination was considered to be the most useful with twelve participants rating it as excellent. The workshop on managing conflict with simulation scenarios was ranked second most helpful. Tutorials on NHS structure and a training portfolio did not receive as high ratings. Areas for improvement highlighted in free-text answers were: adding more face-to-face sessions and discussions about on-call scenarios. Conclusion Transition into NHS can be a challenging experience for doctors at all stages of their careers. However, early intervention and a comprehensive induction programme appear to have had a positive impact on new trainee doctors’ confidence and preparedness for work. The programme's structure and the sessions content were modified in response to feedback. Additionally, individual support sessions and a writing group were organised for trainees and SAS doctors.

This work explores the importance of dynamic inflow for wind turbines of varying rotor radius and also includes various coplanar multirotor setups. A parametrized model including the rotor and inflow dynamics is formulated. Typical values and ranges for the parameters are estimated using theoretical results and empirical data. The model is analyzed in terms of the kinetic energy and its dynamic responses. By analyzing the ratio of kinetic energy in the rotor vs. induced flow, we obtain a scalar measure for the relative importance of the dynamic inflow. Furthermore, the linearized closed-loop dynamics of a wind turbine around its optimum are examined in terms of the eigenvalues and time constants. This gives insights into the stability and control requirements for wind turbine systems. The results show that dynamic inflow should be included in wind turbine modeling and control of most wind turbines, and can only be ignored for small isolated rotors.

The aim of the paper is to identify the drivers of innovation-friendly procurements. The research sample consists of 307 firms acting as contractors in public procurement in Poland. Our dataset has been constructed by utilizing data gathered in 2020 within the framework of the DIALOG 0260/20185 project, funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. We apply the logit model with the propensity for innovation related to public procurement as the dependent variable and possible drivers of innovation-friendly procurement as the independent variables. Our main findings reveal significant distinctions between firms that introduced innovations related to public procurement and firms that did not, in particular with respect to firm size and scale of activity, orientation on public sector, and cooperation with the universities.

Objectives The aim of the paper is to measure innovation capital of Polish cities and verify whether its dispersion changed. Material and methods Data was retrieved from the Local Data Bank provided by Statistics Poland. The sample consists of 18 Polish cities. The research period covers years 2014-2021. The TOPSIS method was applied to build the innovation capital index of cities and sigma convergence of innovation capital was verified. Results The findings indicate relatively high cross-sectional disparities in the vast majority of the investigated indicators of cities’ innovation capital. The largest disparities were identified for the number of higher education graduates and the new registered enterprises in high-tech services sector. The constructed composite indicator - innovation capital index took the highest average values in the analysed period for Wrocław, Poznań, Kraków, Warszawa, and Lublin, whereas Gorzów Wielkopolski, Zielona Góra, Bydgoszcz, and Białystok achieved the lowest values. The sigma convergence analysis revealed that the differentiation of innovation capital in Polish cities remained at a similar level and there was no convergence in this area. Conclusions Innovation capital plays a key role in the development of urban economy. Given the complexity of innovation capital, its measurement should comprise a set of indicators reflecting both output and input dimensions. Identification of spatial patterns of innovation capital distribution should enable to adjust smart specialization strategy to territorial characteristics of a given city.

The disease caused by carp edema virus (CEV) manifests with lethargy as a primary sign; this observation in koi in Japan gained the disease the name koi sleepy disease (KSD). In the years following the discovery of the virus in Japan, KSD cases have been noted in the UK in koi and common carp. Conducting research in order to expand knowledge of the processes of distribution of CEV in infected fish organs will be helpful for eradication and diagnostic purposes.

The main aim of the research was to diagnose drivers' behavior in urban road traffic. It was preceded by careful observation and testing of drivers' behavior in terms of the violations assumed to be observed. It was taken into account, inter alia, aspects such as failure to comply with road signs and signals, behavior at the rail-road crossing, or offenses occurring in the pedestrian-driver relationship. During the observations, the assumption was to capture negative behaviors of drivers, but each time attention was also paid to positive behaviors related to road culture. The analysis of the results allowed the researchers to identify the most common mistakes made by drivers. This can help not only to better enforce regulations at selected measurement sites but also lead to improved education about these specific violations.

Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. The robust regression method was applied to assess the association between depression score and diabetes diagnosis as well as diabetes control.Results: There were 97 participants (21.0%) at mean age of 73.6 years (SD=6.31 years) with prior diagnosis of diabetes. Mean HbA1c concentration was 6.65% (SD=1.0) The majority of patients (55.7%) used oral medication with diet. Nearly 20% declared the use of oral treatment alone, and 10.3% used combined treatment of oral medications, insulin, and diet. In this study, 86.6% of the participants with diabetes confirmed self-monitoring of blood glucose levels and 58.8% were on high-quality diet. No differences in socioeconomic, lifestyle, health characteristics or control of diabetes by adherence to diabetes treatment were found. After adjustment for age and gender, diagnosis of diabetes was associated with greater depressive score by about 2 points (β=2.02, 95% CI=0.16;3.88). However, no significant association between depression score and any indicator of diabetes control was found.Conclusion: In older individuals with diabetes, depression score was higher compared to those without diabetes, but it was not related to poorer diabetes control. No differences in socioeconomic, lifestyle, health characteristics and control of diabetes by adherence to diabetes treatment may suggest that in this age group some other, less known factors are substantial for achievement of treatment targets.Keywords: diabetes, depression, older adults, control

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań dotyczących wybranych tekstów literackich jako narzędzia wspomagającego zdrowie i odporność psychiczną czytelników w okresie adolescencji. Badania zostały przeprowadzone wśród młodzieży w wieku 13–14 lat podczas realizacji warsztatów czytelniczych w Małopolskim Ogrodzie Sztuki w Krakowie w 2021 roku w ramach autorskiego projektu Wędrując ku dorosłości. Literatura wsparciem zdrowia psychicznego młodzieży. Celem spotkań było budowanie rezyliencji nastolatków, adaptacji do zmiany oraz zdolności do odzyskiwania utraconych lub osłabionych sił z wykorzystaniem odpowiednio dobranych lektur. Odniesienia do fabuły prowadziły młodzież do autopoznania, stanowiącego nieodzowny czynnik rozwoju osobowego i społecznego. Terapeutycznie wartościowe okazały się szczególnie takie teksty, które ukazywały charakter relacji międzyludzkich oraz przedstawiały konflikty wewnętrzne młodego człowieka, stając się w ten sposób bazą/lustrem dla własnych przeżyć.

Abstract One of the most crucial determinants of early-life development is the experience of childhood adversities. However, limited evidence is available for how these experiences shape later-life reproductive outcomes in women. Here we test the association between early-life adversities and reproductive parameters in women. Post-reproductive women (N = 105; mean age = 59.7; SD = 10.09) were recruited at the Mogielica Human Ecology Study Site in Poland within a traditional population with a low prevalence of birth control usage and fully traced reproductive histories. Reproductive parameters, as well as exposure to early-life abuse and neglect, were assessed using questionnaires. Childhood adversity was associated negatively with age at menarche (p = 0.009). Analyses on specific subtypes revealed that compared to women who did not experience any kind of early-life adversities in childhood, those who were exposed to emotional (p = 0.007) and physical (p = 0.023) neglect had an earlier age at menarche, those who experienced emotional abuse reported an earlier age at first birth (p = 0.035), and those who were exposed to physical abuse gave birth to fewer number of sons (p = 0.010). Our results suggest that women exposed to childhood adversities experience earlier physiological reproductive readiness and timing of the first birth, but their overall biological condition might be impaired as they bear fewer sons.

This study demonstrates the characteristics of two model packing configurations: 3D printed (3DP) catalyst monoliths on the one hand, and their conventional counterparts, packed beds of spheres, on the other. Cobalt deposited on alumina is selected as a convenient model system for this work, due to its wide spread use in many catalytic reactions. 3DP constructs were produced from alumina powder impregnated with cobalt nitrate while the alumina spheres were directly impregnated with the same cobalt nitrate precursor. The form of the catalyst, the impregnation process, as well as the thermal history, were found to have a significant effect on the resulting cobalt phases. Probing the catalyst bodies in situ by XRD-CT indicated that the level of dispersion of identified Co phases (Co3O4 reduced to CoO) across the support is maintained under reduction conditions. The packed bed of spheres exhibits a non-uniform distribution of cobalt phases, including a core-shell morphology with an average crystallite size of 10–14 nm across the sphere, while the 3DP monolith exhibits a uniform distribution of cobalt phases with an average crystallite size of 5–12 nm upon reduction from Co3O4 to CoO. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling was carried out to develop digital twins and assess the effect of the geometry of both configurations on the pressure drop and velocity profiles. Finally, the activity of both Cobalt-based catalyst geometries was assessed in terms of their conversion, selectivity and turn over frequencies under model multiphase (selective oxidation) reaction conditions, which showed that the desired 3D printed monolithic geometries can offer distinct advantages to the reactor design.

Every year, ulcerative dermal necrosis (UDN) affects salmonids that spend most of their lives in the sea during their migration to the rivers of northern Poland to spawn. The clinical form of the disease manifests itself in ulcerative skin lesions, which lead to significant weakening of the fish and, in most cases, result in their death. This study was carried out on samples taken from sea trout in the Słupia River in northern Poland. In order to identify the pathogen, experiments on the transmission of the disease were carried out, and additional histopathological, microbiological and electron microscopic examinations were performed. As a result of these studies, it was possible to experimentally transfer the disease from sick to healthy fish. The results indicate a complex etiology of the disease (lack of a clearly defined pathogen), in which the change in the environment from salty to freshwater triggers the related changes in skin physiology, which are the main causes of increased susceptibility to the development of the disease.

Abstract Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) exhibit unusual biocidal properties thanks to which they find a wide range of applications in diverse fields of science and industry. Numerous research studies have been devoted to the bactericidal properties of AgNPs while less attention has been focused on their fungicidal activity. Our studies were therefore oriented toward determining the impact of AgNPs characterized by different physicochemical properties on Fusarium avenaceum and Fusarium equiseti. The main hypothesis assumed that the fungicidal properties of AgNPs characterized by comparable morphology can be shaped by stabilizing agent molecules adsorbed on nanoparticle surfaces. Two types of AgNPs were prepared by the reduction of silver ions with sodium borohydride (SB) in the presence of trisodium citrate (TC) or cysteamine hydrochloride (CH). Both types of AgNPs exhibited a quasi-spherical shape. Citrate-stabilized AgNPs (TCSB-AgNPs) of an average size of 15 ± 4 nm were negatively charged. Smaller (12 ± 4 nm), cysteamine-capped AgNPs (CHSB-AgNPs) were characterized by a positive surface charge and higher silver ion release profile. The phytopathogens were exposed to the AgNPs in three doses equal to 2.5, 5 and 10 mg L−1 over 24 and 240 h. Additionally, the impact of silver ions delivered in the form of silver nitrate and the stabilizing agents of AgNPs on the fungi was also investigated. The response of phytopathogens to these treatments was evaluated by determining mycelial growth, sporulation and changes in the cell morphology. The results of our studies showed that CHSB-AgNPs, especially at a concentration of 10 mg L−1, strongly limited the vegetative mycelium growth of both species for short and long treatment times. The cell imaging revealed that CHSB-AgNPs damaged the conidia membranes and penetrated into the cells, while TCSB-AgNPs were deposited on their surface. The fungistatic (lethal) effect was demonstrated only for silver ions at the highest concentration for the F. equiseti species in the 240 h treatment. The number of spores of both Fusarium species was significantly reduced independently of the type of silver compounds used. Generally, it was found that the positively charged CHSB-AgNPs were more fungicidal than negatively charged TCSB-AgNPs. Thereby, it was established that the stabilizing agents of AgNPs and surface charge play a crucial role in the shaping of their fungicidal properties.

This study investigates the surroundings of Munigua (municipium Flavium Muniguense), a small Roman town in the ancient province of Hispania Baetica (SW Spain). The city's economy was based primarily on copper and iron mining, which brought financial prosperity to its citizens. Local production of agricultural goods is thought to have been of little importance, as the regional soil conditions do not seem to be suitable for extensive agriculture. To evaluate the recent soil agro-potential and to find evidence for prehistoric and historic land use in the surroundings of Munigua, we applied a pedo-geomorphological approach based on the physico-chemical analysis of 14 representative soil and sediment exposures. Selected samples were analyzed for bulk chemistry, texture and phytoliths. The chronostratigraphy of the sequences was based on radiocarbon dating of charcoal samples. The site evaluation of the present-day soil agro-potential was carried out according to standard procedures and included evaluation of potential rootability, available water-storage capacity and nutrient budget within the uppermost 1 m. The results show that moderate to very good soil agro-potential prevails in the granitic and floodplain areas surrounding Munigua. Clearly, recent soil agro-potential in these areas allows the production of basic agricultural goods, and similar limited agricultural use should also have been possible in ancient times. In contrast, weak to very weak present-day soil agro-potential prevails in the metamorphic landscape due to the occurrence of shallow and sandy to stony soils. In addition, the study provides pedo-geomorphological evidence for prehistoric and historic land use in pre-Roman, Roman and post-Roman times. Catenary soil mapping in the vicinity of a Roman house complex reveals multi-layered colluvial deposits. They document phases of hillslope erosion mainly triggered by human land use between 4063 ± 82 and 3796 ± 76 cal BP, around 2601 ± 115 cal BP, and between 1424 ± 96 and 421 ± 88 cal BP. Moreover, geochemical and phytolith analyses of a Roman hortic Anthrosol indicate the local cultivation of agricultural products that contributed to the food supply of Munigua. Overall, the evidence of Roman agricultural use in the Munigua area indicates that the city's economy was by no means focused solely on mining. The production of basic agricultural products was also part of Munigua's economic portfolio. Our geoarcheological study thus supports the archeological concept of economically diversified Roman cities in the province of Baetica and in Hispania.

In June 2021, a cluster of seven cases of Campylobacter fetus infections occurred in a rehabilitation center and caused significant morbidity in elderly patients including five with bacteremia and two with osteoarticular medical device infections. The genetic identity identified by whole genome sequencing of the different Campylobacter fetus strains confirms a common source. This foodborne illness outbreak may have resulted from the consumption of unpasteurized dairy products, such as a cow's raw milk cheese resulting from a farm-to-fork strategy.

The aim of the research was to analyze the degree of infection of winter wheat by fungal diseases and to evaluate the morphological and physiological parameters of plants depending on varied foliar fertilization (with and without the ionic form of silver) and applied plant protection agents (active ingredients: propiconazole, fenpropidin, azoxystrobin) in the 2016/2017, 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 growing seasons. The results showed that micronutrient fertilizers with silver and pesticides reduced the severity of fungal diseases better than the control. In most cases, foliar fertilizers enriched with the ionic form of silver at a dose of 1 and 2 l · ha−1 were the most effective. Moreover, foliar fertilization and pesticides had a positive effect on the morphology of wheat. Combined treatment (micronutrient fertilizer with silver and pesticide at a dose of 1 l · ha−1) increased stalk length and weight, ear weight and thousand grain weight to the greatest extent in comparison to the other treatments, while the pesticides stimulated ear length the most. In turn, microelement fertilizers with silver at a dose of 1 and 2 l · ha−1 were better in terms of flag leaf length. Wheat treated with foliar fertilizer and pesticide significantly improved the chlorophyll content based on the leaf greenness index (SPAD). It was found that the foliar application of microelements with silver is promising for use in agriculture because they controlled fungal diseases and ensured the good condition of plants more effectively than pesticides harmful to the environment.

Carp edema virus (CEV) is a poxvirus infecting gills of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and causes a deadly disease called koi sleepy disease (KSD). Currently thanks to higher vigilance and screening for its presence the virus was confirmed to be widespread on the European continent and affects both ornamental koi, farmed and feral common carp. Phylogenetic research of CEV is however in its infancy. Until recently due to the lack of available sequence information, the phylogenetic analysis was limited to a p4a gene. Based on this gene two main clades were established. The genogroup I clade is of European origin and can be found in farmed or feral common carp in Europe. However, the eastern border of the geographic range of CEV from genogroup I is not yet established, therefore we decided to obtain samples from clinically affected carp from Ukraine. Furthermore, we used sequences of the DNA binding viral core protein 8 (VP8) and of the uracil DNA glycosylase (UDGS) to confirm the existence of the genogroups I and II. The results indicate that CEV is highly prevalent in Ukraine. Phylogenetic analysis using the p4a gene showed that common carps in Ukraine are infected with CEV genogroup I. The two additional genes used for the phylogenetic analysis supported the phylogenetic findings. This confirms that common carps in continental Europe are hosts for CEV from the genogroup I and the geographic range for this virus is reaching to the most eastern parts of Ukraine.

Topics on effectively improving the photochemical CO2/benzene/NO oxidation conversion performances of g-C3N4 based materials via charge transfer and separation enhancement are still considered challenging, despite the growing popularity of applying these materials in a variety of energy conversion related applications. Based on the idea of nanoarchitectonics, a post-nanotechnology concept, WOx/Au-g-C3N4 heterostructures are synthesized using two-step thermal polymerization and solvothermal treatment methods in this paper. Small Au nanoparticles are incorporated in superior thin g-C3N4 via mechano-chemical pre-reaction and two-step thermal polymerization (treated at 500 and 700 °C). Enhanced photocurrent density is observed after incorporation of Au, which is also in good agreement with the photocatalytic activity (H2 generation and CO2 reduction) data. Layered WOx with abundant oxygen vacancies are further incorporated into Au-modified g-C3N4 nanosheets to form heterojunctions possessing excellent photocatalytic CO2 photo-reduction performances with CO and CH4 generation rate of 5.64 and 2.58 μmolg−1h−1, respectively, under full solar spectrum. The heterojunctions constructed via in-situ formation show direct Z-scheme charge transfer pathway with improved charge separation and transport efficiencies. These highly stable and recyclable hierarchical g-C3N4 hybrid nanostructures (WOx/Au-g-C3N4 heterojunctions) show outstanding conversion rate (88.1%) and selectivity (99.3%) for benzene to phenol conversion under full solar spectrum condition, as well as excellent NO removal rate (61%).

Drawing on participant observation, interviews, and document analysis, we discuss teachers' narratives about the language and identity of Roma pupils and compare them with those of the pupils themselves. We explore the sources of information that shape teachers' dispositions, category conflation (of Roma with 'Gypsies/Travellers') and lack of information on sociolinguistic repertoires. We discuss the risks of targeted, scripted institutional narratives on Roma and show that in the case under consideration they are likely to have contributed to a disparity between teachers' perception of Roma, and the views that Roma pupils present drawing on their own experiences.

The adoption of the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) by the OECD in 2014 raised many concerns. Banks were particularly obliged to implement many changes in order to properly collect and aggregate data on tax residence of their clients and correctly report them to the tax administration authorities. The aim of this article was to assess the functioning of the CRS, taking into account the benefits of implemented changes and critical voices regarding the functioning of the standard. The efficiency of the solution based on OECD data and a critical analysis of some aspects of the CRS were presented. The adopted research method was based on verification of official OECD documents and comparative analysis of data presented by the organization with the research conducted by scientific institutions and other private and public entities. According to the results of the research, the automatic exchange of financial information is not functioning optimally, and reforms need to be carried out. The additional revenues generated by the CRS are relatively low compared to the tax losses still generated by tax optimization(original abstract)

Marine ecosystem dynamics can vary on timescales ranging from months to centuries, but many observational data are limited to just a few decades. The bivalve Arctica islandica may live up to five centuries depositing annual growth increments in its shells which can serve as an indicator for ecosystem productivity. In the present study, 154 specimens of A. islandica were collected on the Faroe Shelf and standardised annual growth increments for 143 of them – 44 from coastal stations and 99 from shelf stations – were compared with climatic, oceanographic and biological variables. A. islandica growth from coastal and shelf stations was not correlated with basin-scale climate indices (the AMO index, the NAO index, the AO index or the subpolar gyre index) or, more locally, with windspeed or sea surface temperature on the Faroe Shelf. For the shelf stations there was a significant negative correlation between A. islandica growth and the volume transport of the Faroe Current flowing just north of Faroe Islands (r = -0.62). There was a weak nonsignificant positive correlation with an index of primary production on the Faroe Shelf (r = 0.31) and a strong negative correlation with a zooplankton biomass index in mid-summer (r = -0.76). There was also a strong positive correlation between A. islandica growth and the biomass of the bottom-feeding fish species Melanogrammus aeglefinus two years later (r = 0.62). These results seem to suggest that A. islandica growth may represent the amount of fresh phytoplankton that reaches the near-bottom water layers and could probably be regarded as a proxy for the strength of pelagic-benthic coupling that is modulated through phytoplankton-zooplankton interactions in the overlying water. Our results highlight the potential for A. islandica to serve as a long-term proxy for linking variability in pelagic ecosystem dynamics to demersal fish stocks.

Abstract We present Parameter Quantification Network (PQ-Net), a regression deep convolutional neural network providing quantitative analysis of powder X-ray diffraction patterns from multi-phase systems. The network is tested against simulated and experimental datasets of increasing complexity with the last one being an X-ray diffraction computed tomography dataset of a multi-phase Ni-Pd/CeO2-ZrO2/Al2O3 catalytic material system consisting of ca. 20,000 diffraction patterns. It is shown that the network predicts accurate scale factor, lattice parameter and crystallite size maps for all phases, which are comparable to those obtained through full profile analysis using the Rietveld method, also providing a reliable uncertainty measure on the results. The main advantage of PQ-Net is its ability to yield these results orders of magnitude faster showing its potential as a tool for real-time diffraction data analysis during in situ/operando experiments.

BackgroundEnteral nutrition (EN) with foods for special medical purposes (FSMP) is recommended for most patients on home enteral nutrition (HEN). Although there are disease-specific guidelines for energy, protein, and micronutrient provision, only a few studies are showing real-life experience in the long-term use of FSMP.MethodsIn a multicenter study, the influence of the FSMP composition and administration technique (bolus vs. continuous) on protein and energy provision in HEN was analyzed. Provision of vitamins and minerals was compared to recommended daily allowance (RDA) and upper tolerable limit (UL).ResultsApproximately, 772 patients on HEN, mostly (88.6%) with oncological and neurological diseases, were enrolled. The patients on standard FSMP received less protein and energy than those on hypercaloric and protein enriched despite receiving higher volumes of EN (p < 0.05). No differences were observed in jejunal feeding with oligomeric vs. polymeric FSMP in terms of energy, protein, and volume. Continuous gastric feeding provided more protein, energy, and volume vs. bolus feeding (p < 0.05). Significant number of patients received less than 100% RDA of vitamin D (50.5%), vitamin B3 (49%), vitamin K (21.8%), vitamin B5 (64.3%), vitamin B9 (60%). Majority of the patients received less than 100% RDA of sodium (80.2%), potassium (99%), chloride (98%), calcium (67%), magnesium (87%), fluoride (99%), and iodine (43%). Approximately, 43.63% of cancer and 49.9% of neurological patients received less than 1 g/kg/day of protein and 51.7% of cancer and 55.5% of neurological patients received less than 25 kcal/kg/day.ConclusionAwareness of the available compositions of FSMP and advantageous profiles of specific diets may lead to the implementation of recommendations for EN. HEN professionals need to analyze all the patient’s needs and requirements to provide more tailored matching of nutritional support.

Introduction: The aim of this report was to assess the skeletal, dental and soft tissue changes in a juvenile patient with a severe class III malocclusion. This case report describes a novel method of class III treatment using skeletal anchorage for maxillary protraction and Alt-RAMEC protocol. Patient concerns: The patient did not have any subjective complaints before treatment and there was no family history of class III malocclusion. Clinical findings and primary diagnoses: Extra-orally, the patient had a concave profile with a retrusive mid-face and prominent lower lip. The intra-oral examination revealed angle class III malocclusion with a −3-mm overjet. There was no anterior displacement on closure when the patient was assessed clinically. According to the cephalometric analysis, the sagittal jaw relation and Wits appraisal were reduced due to a retrognathic maxilla and prognathic mandible. Interventions: The treatment plan involved maxillary protraction, Alt-RAMEC protocol for 10 weeks and upper molar distalisation with a hybrid hyrax distalizer in combination with a mentoplate. The active treatment time was estimated to 18 months followed by 6 months retention with the appliance. Outcomes: The sagittal jaw relationship was increased by approximately 9°, mainly due to maxillary advancement of 8 mm and a positional change of the mandible anteroposteriorly. Natural decompensation of the lower incisors was also observed. In addition, both the facial profile and the smile became more harmonious after treatment. The treatment analysis revealed that the changes achieved were mainly skeletal and it was possible to avoid adverse effects on the dentition. Conclusion: In conclusion, treatment with a hybrid hyrax distalizer combined with mentoplate using the Alt-RAMEC protocol is effective in correcting the anteroposterior discrepancy in a juvenile class III patient and it is possible to achieve maxillary advancement of 8 mm. This communication discusses the dialogical methods of teaching research integrity and ethics as a part of the positive integrity trend focused on supporting ethical behaviour. The aim of this paper is to offer a brief overview of the selected dialogical strategies based on cases that can be successfully implemented in teaching ethical research and when sharing experiences on good scientific practice. We describe such methods as: storytelling, rotatory role playing, and the fishbowl debate, along with the “Dilemma Game” tool, “ConscienceApp” performance, and a flipped classroom idea. These theoretical considerations are based on research conducted as part of a European project under the Horizon 2020 programme.

Research background: Given the pivotal role of innovations and technological progress in shaping the economic development of regions and the crucial significance of spatial dimension of innovation processes at the regional level, the assessment of technological convergence in the regional scope becomes an essential research problem. Technological convergence could be identified on the basis of the analysis of total factor productivity (TFP). The significance of the technological convergence analysis results from the fact that income convergence can be both accelerated or impeded, depending on whether the initial differences in the level of technology (TFP) decrease or increase over time. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we attempt to develop a theoretical framework for the analysis of the technological convergence. Secondly, we investigate the technological convergence (on the basis of the TFP analysis) across European regions. Methods: During the first stage of the research, we employ the multiplicatively-complete Färe-Primont index to calculate TFP. The second stage of the study includes estimation of spatial panel models applied to assess the level of technological convergence across European regions. The research sample consists of 273 NUTS 2 European Union (EU) regions over the period 2010– 2016. Findings & Value added: The results of the study confirm a clear division of Europe into the Western European regions with high TFP values and the Eastern European regions with low TFP level. The research also shows that in the Eastern European regions the process of reducing the differences in the productivity levels is faster than in Western European regions. Since the issue of technological convergence is still not sufficiently explored in the relevant literature our paper attempts to fill a cognitive and methodological gap in the investigation of the technological convergence in the European regional space.

The aim of the paper is to assess the impact of knowledge-intensive specialisation on Total Factor Productivity (TFP) in the EU regional scope. To calculate TFP defined as the aggregated output-input ratio, we employ the multiplicatively-complete Färe-Primont index as it satisfies all economically-relevant axioms and tests from the index number theory. The knowledge intensive specialisation of EU regions is captured by the statistics on high-tech industry and knowledge-intensive services, i.e. the employment in high-tech sectors as a percentage of total employment (HTS). The research sample consists of 248 EU regions at NUTS 2 level. The key findings of the study indicate that the employment in high-tech manufacturing and knowledge-intensive services is not distributed uniformly in the EU regional space. Similarly, TFP also varies substantially across the EU regions. Moreover, the results of the research model estimation show that specialisation in high-tech manufacturing and knowledge-intensive services directly affects regional TFP. The main implication of our analysis for the policymakers is to explore and support knowledge-intensive specialisation patterns, that should be built upon existing regional technological competencies and human capital endowment according to the smart specialisation strategies approach.

Vaccination is the best form of protecting fish against viral diseases when the pathogen cannot be contained by biosecurity measures. Vaccines based on live attenuated viruses seem to be most effective for vaccination against challenging pathogens like Cyprinid herpesvirus 3. However, there are still knowledge gaps how these vaccines effectively protect fish from the deadly disease caused by the epitheliotropic CyHV-3, and which aspects of non-direct protection of skin or gill integrity and function are important in the aquatic environment. To elucidate some elements of protection, common carp were vaccinated against CyHV-3 using a double deletion vaccine virus KHV-T ΔDUT/TK in the absence or presence of a mix of common carp beta-defensins 1, 2 and 3 as adjuvants. Vaccination induced marginal clinical signs, low virus load and a minor upregulation of cd4, cd8 and igm gene expression in vaccinated fish, while neutralisation activity of blood serum rose from 14 days post vaccination (dpv). A challenge infection with CyHV-3 induced a severe disease with 80-100% mortality in non-vaccinated carp, while in vaccinated carp, no mortality was recorded and the virus load was >1,000-fold lower in the skin, gill and kidney. Histological analysis showed strongest pathological changes in the skin, with a complete destruction of the epidermis in non-vaccinated carp. In the skin of non-vaccinated fish, T and B cell responses were severely downregulated, inflammation and stress responses were increased upon challenge, whereas vaccinated fish had boosted neutrophil, T and B cell responses. A disruption of skin barrier elements (tight and adherence junction, desmosomes, mucins) led to an uncontrolled increase in skin bacteria load which most likely exacerbated the inflammation and the pathology. Using a live attenuated virus vaccine, we were able to show that increased neutrophil, T and B cell responses provide protection from CyHV-3 infection and lead to preservation of skin integrity, which supports successful protection against additional pathogens in the aquatic environment which foster disease development in non-vaccinated carp.

Background Cervical dilatation curves are widely used to describe normal and abnormal labor progression for cephalic presentation. Labor curves for breech presentations have never been described. Objectives The aims of this study were to examine the pattern of labor progression in women with a breech presentation and to determine whether the type of breech or parity can influence the speed of cervical dilatation. Study design We analyzed the labor data from 349 women with a term, singleton, and breech fetus after spontaneous onset of labor in 2010–2018. Cesarean deliveries were excluded. The patterns of labor progression were described by examining the relationship between the elapsed times from the full dilatation and cervical dilatation stages. Average labor curves were developed using repeated-measures analysis with 3rd degree polynomial modeling. The results were interpreted according to parity and the type of breech. Results The first stage of labor progression was divided into a latency phase from 0 to 5 cm of dilatation and an active phase from 5 to 10 cm. In the active phase, the median speed of cervical dilatation was 1.67 cm/h [1.25, 2.61] (2 cm/h for multipara and 1.54 cm/h for nullipara). The difference by parity was significant in the active phase (p< 0.05). The cervical dilatation rate from 3 cm to 10 cm did not significantly differ between the complete and frank breeches (1.56 cm/h vs 1.75 cm/h, p = 0.48). However, the median cervical dilatation rate from 8 cm to complete dilatation was faster for complete breeches (1.92 cm/h versus 1.33 cm/h, p = 0.045). Conclusion As with cephalic presentation, the first stage of labor progression for breech presentation can be divided into a latent and active phase. Labor progression should be interpreted with respect to parity, and women should be informed that the type of breech does not seem to influence the cervical dilatation rate when there is adequate management.

The paper presents the results of research on children’s metaphorical predispositions, i.e. the ability to understand, recognize and create metaphors. The research was carried out among children aged 6–9 during reading workshops as part of the 5 Coupons of Culture of the Małopolska Region, acquired by the author. The material is an attempt to indicate the value of literary metaphors in the education, therapy and upbringing of children. The literary metaphors used during the research have created planes that enable individual reading of the meaning of the text. In understanding the meanings of metaphors, the context of their use also played an important role. “Load-bearing” provided the texts with simple and legible metaphors, while at the same time appealing to young audiences. Thanks to metaphors, the world created in reading became universal, but young readers related it to personal experiences, discovering the convergence between their own lives and the creation of a work. It is worthwhile extracting and using the didactic and therapeutic dimension of metaphors in working with children and treat it as an important factor supporting the teaching process.

This document is an up-to-date map on curricula in which research integrity (RI) or research ethics (RE) is currently included. It contains a collection of curricula in which RI/RE or associated fields are mentioned from the Path2Integrity partner countries Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Poland and Spain. Moving forward, the Path2Integrity training programme for educators will develop research integrity courses for trainers using this map as a reference. In this way, the project aims to support educators in closing possible gaps. At a broader level, Path2Integrity is involved in discourse with various stakeholders to establish a board of educational policymakers and stakeholders comprised of members from at least eight different countries to foster RI and parts of RI in European curricula.

Research background: Total factor productivity (TFP) determines how efficiently and intensely the available inputs are used and combined in production process. Improvement of TFP performance requires identification of its determinants, thus enabling policy actions to focus on them. Since the ability to create and absorb innovation is considered as a crucial factor of economic development, the investigation of the impact of the level of regional innovative performance on TFP distribution across EU regions is an important research problem. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we attempt to develop a theoretical framework for the analysis of the impact of innovation on TFP. Secondly, we assess TFP levels for regions in the EU and investigate whether innovations account for the observed regional disparities in TFP. Methods: The research sample consists of 202 European Union (EU) regions at NUTS 1 and NUTS 2 level from 22 countries. The regional data on GDP, employment and gross fixed capital formation come from the Eurostat. The source of data on the level of innovativeness of European regions is the Regional Innovation Scoreboard. To calculate TFP, we use the multiplicatively-complete Färe-Primont index. In turn, to examine the impact of innovation on TFP, we employ the spatially-lagged X model. Findings & Value added: Our findings show a high degree of dispersion in TFP across EU regions. We find a positive impact of regional innovation performance on TFP. Although theoretical papers on economic development and regional economics suggest that improvements in TFP are key to regional economic performance, and that innovations are crucial to gain such productivity effects, there is a dearth of empirical studies on the link between innovation and TFP at the regional level. Therefore, our paper attempts to fill this gap by providing the evidence of positive effect of innovation externalities on TFP in European regions.

Koi herpesvirus (KHV) has infected farmed common carp in Poland clinically and asymptomatically since 2004. The role of non-carp species as vectors of virus transmission is well known except for in the case of KHV. The aim was to better understand this virus’ infection and transmission pathways in common carp, looking at the potential vector role of fishes kept with them.

Layered transition metals dichalcogenides such as MoS2 and WS2 have shown a tunable bandgap, making them highly desirable for optoelectronic applications. Here, we report on one-step chemical vapor deposited MoS2, WS2 and MoxW1-xS2 heterostructures incorporated into photoconductive devices to be examined and compared in view of their use as potential photodetectors. Vertically aligned MoS2 nanosheets and horizontally stacked WS2 layers, and their heterostructure form MoxW1-xS2, exhibit direct and indirect bandgap, respectively. To analyze these structures, various characterization methods were used to elucidate their properties including Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. While all the investigated samples show a photoresponse in a broad wavelength range between 400 nm and 700 nm, the vertical MoS2 nanosheets sample exhibits the highest performances at a low bias voltage of 5 V. Our findings demonstrate a responsivity and a specific detectivity of 47.4 mA W−1 and 1.4 × 1011 Jones, respectively, achieved by MoxW1-xS2. This study offers insights into the use of a facile elaboration technique for tuning the performance of MoxW1-xS2 heterostructure-based photodetectors.
