Abstract

The ultrastructural features of the sperm were studied in the hermaphroditic teleost Satanoperca jurupari HECKEL, 1840 from Amazon River. Spermatocytes, spermatids and sperm develop in the testicular cysts among the different oocyte stages. Different stages of early spermatocyte development, mainly the ones with synaptonemal complexes were often observed. The mature spermatozoa belong to the introsperm type, with a short head (~ 3 mm long and 1.3 mum wide) without acrosome, short midpiece (~ 1.2 mum long and 1.8 mum wide) containing several mitochondria surrounding two centrioles and forming a mitochondrial collar. They have two flagella (each ~15 mum long) each of which has a common 9 + 2 microtubular pattern. Each flagellum has two opposite lateral cytoplasmic extensions that begin about 3 mum the midpiece still close to the end piece of flagellum.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effects of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) in a model of permanent ischemic stroke (focal ischemia due to thermocoagulation of pial vessels) on sensorimotor function (cylinder test and patch removal test), behavioral tasks (novelty habituation memory open field task) and cerebral infarct size in adult male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) for 42 days after the occurrence of a stroke. We observed that the stroke caused asymmetry in the front paws and delayed adhesive removal. These effects were spontaneously reduced in WKY rats, but not in SHR. Short- and long-term novelty habituation memories were abolished by stroke in WYK and SHR. On the 3rd day after stroke, the size of the focal cerebral infarct was the same in WKY and SHR. However, on the 7th day, the infarct size decreased in WKY rats, but not SHR. These results suggested that SAH impairment of sensorimotor recovery in rats subjected to cerebral ischemia could be related to augmented focal cerebral infarct size. Moreover, the behavioral tasks used in this study were unaffected by Systemic Arterial Hypertension. Our results highlight the need for animal models of comorbidities in stroke research. Abstract

Carbendazim, a common pesticide, has shown signs of causing cancer, infertility and toxicity to organisms. Due to its intense use, this fungicide has become a persistent compound in the environment, raising the importance of better understanding its behaviour, metabolic pathways and effects on organisms. Zebrafish is considered an excellent animal model, being able to rapidly absorb compounds in water, mimicking what occurs in the aquatic environment. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate carbendazim metabolites in zebrafish water tank using liquid chromatography coupled to a high-resolution mass spectrometer (LC-HRMS) to highlight analytical targets in order to monitor carbendazim exposure in aquatic environments. For this purpose, treatment, negative and stability groups were defined. In addition, water samples were collected from the tanks and analyses were carried out by LC-HRMS. The results allowed the putative annotation of 7 target metabolites. This study applied the analysis of zebrafish water tank for evaluation of target metabolites of carbendazim as a promising approach, since it is a much cleaner matrix than the usual biological matrices. These metabolites can ensure detectability and further strengthen confidence in monitoring carbendazim exposure in aquatic environments. To the best of our knowledge, there is no one study that has evaluated carbendazim metabolites produced by zebrafish, neither in the animal's body nor in the water tank. Abstract

Places are temporal milieus. They are sites for social and spatial interaction where the orchestrated patterns of social activities, cycles of nature, movement and other spatial repetitive events suggest the tempo of a place. The tempo of a place is inherently rhythmical, varying its pace and evocative phrasings throughout the day, the week and the season. In an urban place, patterns of people movement, encounter, and rest that recurrently negotiate with the cycles of nature and the architectural context merge into expressive bundles of rhythms that offer a place its temporal distinctiveness. This research defines place-temporality as the intersubjective time perceived through and whilst practising everyday-life in urban space. Place-temporality is experienced as a rhythmic flow that affects equally the aural, the visual and the haptic sense. As a spatial-temporal experience it has aesthetic significance. Place temporal aesthetics is sensual and performative and in this way it is similar to musical aesthetics. At the core of musical aesthetics lie notions of rhythm, performance and tonality. Based on these notions this research proposes a conceptual and analytical framework for the study of the intersubjective time of places in the city. Focusing on Fitzroy Square in London, and using film, photography and notation drawings it explores the continuum and unique and, consonant and dissonant urban rhythmic groupings and patterns which make up the temporal identity of this place.

Abstract

Carbendazim is a systemic fungicide used in several countries, particularly in Brazil. However, studies suggest that it is related to the promotion of tumors, endocrine disruption, toxicity to organisms, among other effects. As a result, carbendazim is not allowed in the USA, Australia and in some European Union countries. Therefore, further studies are necessary to evaluate its effects and zebrafish is a model routinely used to provide relevant information regarding the acute and long-term effects of xenobiotics. In this way, zebrafish water tank samples (water samples of aquarium containing zebrafish) and liver samples from animals exposed to carbendazim at a concentration of 120 ug/L were analyzed by liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC- HRMS), followed by multivariate and univariate statistical analyses, using the metabolomics approach. Our results suggest impairment of lipid metabolism with a consequent increase in intrahepatic lipids and endocrine disruption. Furthermore, the results suggest two endogenous metabolites as potential biomarkers to determine carbendazim exposure. Finally, this study showed to be possible using zebrafish water tank to assess the dysregulation of endogenous metabolites followed by an understanding of the biological effects. Observa-se um aumento percentual da população de idosos, e a prevalência de comorbidades específicas dessa população gera impactos sociais e nos gastos em saúde. Entre essas comorbidades, identifica-se a sarcopenia, relacionada a declínio funcional, incapacidade física e redução da qualidade de vida. Assim, tornam-se importantes estudos que avaliem a melhoria da força muscular com ênfase no processo de envelhecimento. Considerando a limitação física encontrada em parte dessa população, surgem evidências que avaliaram o efeito independente de suplementos nutricionais em marcadores de sarcopenia, força muscular e funcionalidade. Esta revisão sistemática tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito do hidroximetilbutirato (HMB) na sarcopenia em idosos na ausência de exercício físico. Foi feita uma revisão sistemática de estudos randomizados publicados em inglês, português ou espanhol, entre 2004 e 2021, avaliando o efeito do HMB em marcadores de sarcopenia em idosos. O estudo foi conduzido utilizando Medline, Cochrane, Cinahl, Lilacs e Periódicos Capes. A pesquisa inicial encontrou um total de 201 artigos. A análise final incluiu quatro artigos com amostra de 958 pacientes idosos sarcopênicos. Variabilidade significativa foi encontrada nas definições de sarcopenia, nos métodos utilizados para avaliar o efeito da intervenção e na composição do suplemento nutricional utilizado. Resultados estatisticamente significantes em relação à preservação de massa magra foram encontrados, sem benefício associado de marcadores de força muscular e funcionalidade. A suplementação com HMB, apesar de controlar a perda de massa magra em idosos, não foi capaz de gerar aumento de força muscular e marcadores de funcionalidade.

Abstract

Fruit of extension actions developed within the scope of the Black Identity in Action Extension Project, developed at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Ceará - Campus Juazeiro do Norte (IFCE-JN), by the Center for Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous Studies (NEABI ). This work presents the extension project “black identity in action”, specifically the actions developed with a thematic focus on black aesthetics and the learning and meanings generated among the participants. Actions such as cine-debate, gaining the name CINENEABI, conversation circles, workshops, lectures and technical visits were carried out. We can see the potential of actions to combat and raise awareness among the population about racism, with the learning generated being linked to black history and culture and the construction of political and ideological thinking in favor of anti-racist education, in which whites and blacks, they embrace the struggle as a strategy for the common good and social equality. The execution of this project generated hope in us, from the verb hope, as Paulo Freire says that an anti-racist society is possible and is the only inclusive path to follow., Fruto das ações extensionistas desenvolvidas no âmbito do Projeto de Extensão Identidade negra em ação, desenvolvido no Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Ceará- Campus Juazeiro do Norte (IFCE-JN), pelo Núcleo de Estudos Afro-brasileiros e indígenas (NEABI). Abstract

Background: The benefit of pharmacogenetic testing before starting drug therapy has been well documented for several single gene–drug combinations. However, the clinical utility of a pre-emptive genotyping strategy using a pharmacogenetic panel has not been rigorously assessed. Methods: We conducted an open-label, multicentre, controlled, cluster-randomised, crossover implementation study of a 12-gene pharmacogenetic panel in 18 hospitals, nine community health centres, and 28 community pharmacies in seven European countries (Austria, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, and the UK). Patients aged 18 years or older receiving a first prescription for a drug clinically recommended in the guidelines of the Dutch Pharmacogenetics Working Group (ie, the index drug) as part of routine care were eligible for inclusion. Exclusion criteria included previous genetic testing for a gene relevant to the index drug, a planned duration of treatment of less than 7 consecutive days, and severe renal or liver insufficiency. All patients gave written informed consent before taking part in the study. Participants were genotyped for 50 germline variants in 12 genes, and those with an actionable variant (ie, a drug–gene interaction test result for which the Dutch Pharmacogenetics Working Group [DPWG] recommended a change to standard-of-care drug treatment) were treated according to DPWG recommendations. Patients in the control group received standard treatment. To prepare clinicians for pre-emptive pharmacogenetic testing, local teams were educated during a site-initiation visit and online educational material was made available. The primary outcome was the occurrence of clinically relevant adverse drug reactions within the 12-week follow-up period. Analyses were irrespective of patient adherence to the DPWG guidelines. Dissertação de mestrado em Finanças, Nos últimos anos, tem-se assistido à globalização dos mercados financeiros e a uma crescente acessibilidade e complexidade dos produtos e mercados financeiros. Assim sendo, os indivíduos necessitam de possuir conhecimentos financeiros sólidos, para que possam tomar decisões financeiras informadas sobre as suas finanças pessoais e desta forma aumentar o seu bem-estar financeiro. Dada a importância da literacia financeira para os indivíduos e para a sociedade como um todo, o presente estudo tem como principal objetivo aferir o nível de literacia financeira de um grupo específico da população portuguesa, os estudantes universitários, bem como perceber quais as variáveis sociodemográficas que explicam o nível de literacia financeira encontrado. Adicionalmente, pretende-se compreender a relação entre o nível de literacia financeira efetivo e percecionado, a experiência financeira, aversão ao risco e atitudes face à poupança. Tendo em vista a prossecução do objetivo deste estudo, optou-se por aplicar um inquérito por questionário, dividido em 3 subsecções de acordo com a temática em estudo. Obteve-se uma amostra composta por 690 inquiridos, sendo que a maioria se identifica com o sexo feminino (58.84%), possui uma idade média que se situa entre os 17 e 24 e encontra-se a frequentar uma licenciatura ou mestrado. Os resultados obtidos indicam que o nível de Literacia Financeira detido pelos estudantes foi de 77.22%, o que indica que em média os alunos acertaram mais de metade das questões apresentadas. No que respeita aos fatores sociodemográficos que contribuem para um nível mais elevado de literacia financeira, destacam-se o género, ciclo de estudos, área de estudos e rendimento mensal líquido do agregado. Por fim, conclui-se que o grau de aversão ao risco diminui com o nível de literacia financeira detido pelo inquirido. Também se verificou que o nível de literacia financeira detido influencia positivamente as atitudes perante a poupança, no entanto não se confirmou a existência de uma relação entre o nível de literacia financeira efetivo e percecionado, como seria expectável., The last few years have seen the globalization of the financial markets and an increase in the accessibility and complexity of financial products and markets. Therefore, individuals need to have sound financial knowledge, so that they can make informed financial decisions about their personal finances and thus increase their financial well-being. Given the importance of financial literacy for individuals and for society as a whole, the main purpose of this study is to assess the level of financial literacy within a specific group of the Portuguese population: College students, as well as to understand which socio-demographic variables explain the level of financial literacy found. In addition, it aims to understand the relationship between the actual and perceived level of financial literacy, financial experience, risk aversion and attitudes towards savings. In order to pursue the main goal of this study, we chose to conduct a questionnaire survey, divided into 3 sub-sections, each according to the theme under investigation. The sample size is composed of 690 respondents, most of whom are female (58.84%), have an average age between 17 and 24 and are attending a bachelor's or master's degree. The results obtained indicate that the level of Financial Literacy held by students was of 77.22%, which indicates that, on average, students got more than half of the questions right. Regarding the socio-demographic factors: the respondent’s gender, study cycle, area of study and household net monthly income all seem to contribute to higher levels of financial literacy. Finally, we conclude that the degree of risk aversion decreases with the level of financial literacy held by the respondent. It was also found that the level of financial literacy positively influences attitudes towards saving, but the existence of a relationship between actual and perceived levels of financial literacy was not confirmed, as would be expected.
