In recent years, the paint and coatings industry has shifted away from traditional resin formulations that require high concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to achieve the desired rheological performance and sustainability targets. One approach to eliminate or reduce VOCs in paint and coating formulations while maintaining the final performance is to disperse stimuli-responsive polymer latex particles in water. The chemistry and architecture of these particles have been engineered such that the suspension rheology changes in response to the pH changes. The particles can also be swollen with organic solvents to illicit similar rheological changes. To understand how the particle microstructure influences the observed macroscopic properties, we use small-angle neutron scattering and dynamic light scattering to determine that these particles consist of a cross-linked core with long polymer tails that extend into the dispersing medium. Carboxylic acid groups present on the tails deprotonate with increasing pH, and the extension of the polymer chain due to charge repulsion increases the hydrodynamic drag on the particle. We find that adjusting the pH alone has a much more significant effect on the shear dependence of the viscosity of the studied resin than adding organic solvent alone. We also find that this resin architecture is more responsive per mole of pH-responsive group than other architectures of pH-responsive latex particles in the literature.

Peptide-polymer hybrids combine the hierarchy of biological species with synthetic concepts to achieve control over molecular design and material properties. By further incorporating covalent cross-links, the enhancement of molecular complexity is achieved, allowing for both a physical and covalent network. In this work, the structure and function of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-network hybrids are tuned by varying peptide block length and overall peptide content. Here the impact of poly(ε-carbobenzyloxy-l-lysine) (PZLY) units on block interactions and mechanics is explored by probing secondary structure, PEG crystallinity, and hierarchical organization. The incorporation of PZLY reveals a mixture of α-helices and β-sheets at smaller repeat lengths ( n = 5) and selective α-helix formation at a higher peptide molecular weight ( n = 20). Secondary structure variations tailored the solid-state film hierarchy, whereby nanoscale fibers and microscale spherulites varied in size depending on the amount of α-helices and β-sheets. This long-range ordering influenced mechanical properties, resulting in a decrease in elongation-at-break (from 400 to 20%) with increasing spherulite diameter. Furthermore, the reduction in soft segment crystallinity with the addition of PZLY resulted in a decrease in moduli. It was determined that, by controlling PZLY content, a balance of physical associations and self-assembly is obtained, leading to tunable PEG crystallinity, spherulite formation, and mechanics.

Nature has achieved diverse functionality via hierarchical organization driven by physical interactions such as hydrogen bonding. Synthetically, polymer-peptide hybrids have been utilized to achieve these architectural arrangements and obtain diverse mechanical properties, stimuli responsiveness, and bioactivity. Here, we explore the impact of peptide ordering and soft/hard phase interactions in PEG-based non-chain extended and chain extended peptidic polyurea (PU) and polyurea/polyurethane (PUU) hybrids towards tunable mechanics. Increasing the peptide content of poly(ε-carbobenzyloxy-l-lysine) (PZLY) revealed an increase in α-helical formation and modulation in amine/ether hydrogen bonding, suggesting enhanced intermolecular hydrogen bonding between peptide segments and soft/hard blocks. A balance of phase mixing and microphase segregation was observed depending on competitive hydrogen bonding and the hybrid architecture. This phase behaviour strongly modulated the mechanical response, particularly modulus and extensibility. We anticipate that this solid-state, synthetic framework will expand the reach of our peptide hybrids into biointerfacing materials, including scaffolds and responsive actuators via peptide selection.

Design strategies from nature provide vital clues for the development of synthetic materials with tunable mechanical properties. Employing the concept of hierarchy and controlled percolation, a new class of polymer nanocomposites containing a montmorillonite (MMT)-reinforced electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) filler embedded within a polymeric matrix of either poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) or ethylene oxide-epichlorohydrin copolymer (EO-EPI) were developed to achieve a tunable mechanical response upon exposure to specific stimuli. Mechanical response and switching times upon hydration were shown to be dependent on the weight-fraction of MMT in the PVA electrospun fibers and type of composite matrix. PVA/MMT.PVAc composite films retained excellent two-way switchability for all MMT fractions; however, the switching time upon hydration was decreased dramatically as the MMT content was increased due to the highly hydrophilic nature of MMT. Additionally, for the first time, significant two-way switchability of PVA/MMT.EO-EPI composites was achieved for higher weight fractions (12 wt %) of MMT. An extensive investigation into the effects of fiber diameter, crystallinity, and MMT content revealed that inherent rigidity of MMT platelets plays an important role in controlling the mechanical response of these hierarchical electrospun composites.

Di-tert-butyl (E)-4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylate and tert-butyl 4-vinylbenzoate were copolymerized with maleic anhydride and tert-butyl 4-maleimidobenzoate, individually and respectively. After conversion into polyanions, these four copolymers exhibited activity against four HIV-1 strains: IIIb, BaL, JR-CSF, and 92UG037. For both the IIIb and BaL HIV-1 strains, the lowest IC50 (0.095 and 0.23 μg/mL, respectively) values were obtained with poly(4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylate-alt-maleic acid) (DCSti-alt-MA). For JR-CSF and 92UG037, both tier 2 clinical isolates but different clades, DCSti-alt-MA exhibited the lowest IC50 (0.76 and 0.75 μg/mL, respectively). Although DCSti-alt-MA had the lowest IC50 in μg/mL for each strain, the other copolymers had IC50s less than 2-fold higher. Further, these copolymers achieved high selectivity indices (>100) for these clinical isolates. Polymer rigidity, as measured by the statistical segment length, emerged as a key property when comparing anti-HIV activities with those of other polyanions. A speculative illustration was proposed for possible modes of inhibition.

Anionic polyelectrolytes with various charge densities and a well-defined chain architecture have great industrial and fundamental importance. In this article, we describe the synthesis and characterization of new sterically crowded conformationally constrained anionic polyelectrolytes with tunable charge densities based on highly functionalized stilbene-maleic anhydride/maleimide comonomers. Polyelectrolyte precursors with tert -butyl carboxylate protecting groups are first prepared by radical polymerization and readily characterized by 1 H NMR, SEC, TGA, and DSC without the complications normally arising with charged macromolecules. The precursors are converted into their corresponding deblocked forms by simply reacting with trifluoroacetic acid to deprotect the tert -butyl group and then neutralized in basic aqueous solutions to yield anionic polyelectrolytes.
